You have to start somewhere on your path to becoming a travel agent, and the sooner you jump in, the sooner you'll build your client base. On the other hand, if you're hoping to parlay your experience in a semi-related industry, be it marketing or hospitality, that can help because you'll have even more context for your new gig. Formal Training Needed to Become a Travel Agent

While some four-year colleges, community colleges, and trade schools offer tourism certifications, it is not a requirement for those trying to become travel agents. Certificates of tourism can be very helpful, but so can previous training in marketing, hospitality, or even event planning. In terms of the training time you need to put in before becoming a fully-fledged travel agent, it depends. You could start your career right after high school, or you could put in one to four years to earn a certificate, associate's, or bachelor's degree in tourism. Of course, you could also change course from a related job, and morph your experience as, say, a destination wedding planner into a career as a travel agent.

Down the road, you can also own a travel agency franchise. Owning a franchise might come with more overhead costs, and that would be a reason to incorporate.

If you're an independent contractor, you should know that your taxes aren't going to be as straightforward as a full-time employee's might be. You may have to start keeping track of your business expenses, as you might be able to write them off. You also might not get things like health benefits from your employer. As you plan your new career, consider sitting down with an established travel agent to ask them some logistical questions: Where do they get their health insurance? How do they keep track of their income and expenses? Do they use an accountant to do their taxes? This subject provides you with a general understanding of marketing and branding concepts, theories and models as they apply to the travel and tourism industry. You will consider the importance of consumer behaviour, product development, segmentation, targeting and positioning to achieve organisational objectives. 

Successful Sales Techniques 

The secret to success in the travel industry is having expert sales techniques and being confident when interacting with a customer. We will take you step by step through a seven-step sales process, which also happens to be very transferable to other sales roles in many industries. 

Understanding People & Organisations 

You will learn about yourself, your emotional intelligence and workplace motivations. You’ll cover travel and tourism organisations within this constantly changing environment and the many factors that can influence their performance. In this subject, you will hear from industry leaders and graduates about their career journeys. 

Travel Systems Essentials 

In this subject, you will be exposed to contemporary technological trends implemented in the travel industry. You will learn about digital innovations, transformations and disruptors that have occurred within the travel and tourism industry. You will be introduced to online reservation systems widely used by the travel and tourism industry. 

Sustainable Tourism 

This subject introduces you to sustainable tourism concepts: environmental, social and economic. You will analyse how sustainable tourism concepts influence decision-making at an organisational and individual level, and the impacts on the industry as a whole. Industry case studies include the Intrepid Group and Flight Centre Travel Group's Responsible Travel. 

Industry Focus 

This subject provides students with professional experience in an area related to the career they are working towards. Students will learn to perform more effectively in the workplace in a team environment, strengthening specific skills such as time management, communication, and problem-solving, while drawing on the knowledge gained so far.

Flight Centre Travel Consultant FAQ

We'll work with you to locate the most convenient store for you, however, if do not live near any then we would ask you to consider relocating. However, we will treat each student case by case and find the best solution for you!

You will receive a one-off payment of either $18,000 or $9,000 (depending on your academic performance), in your pay from Flight Centre after the equivalent of two years full time employment with the company.

With the agreement from your Team Leader and Regional Sales Manager, you can transfer to another Flight Centre store in Australia, and still be eligible for the Scholarship payment.

Full-time study is 9 months (2 semesters) 

Part-time study is 18 months (4 semesters)

Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent) & online admission.

All subjects are delivered completely online!   We do offer live tutorials, QA's and coaching calls to help you along the way.

In 2024 our next intakes will be in February and July.

Successful completion of this program will set you up to apply for roles as a Travel Consultant. Graduating students receive an increased retainer of approx $4,000 for the first year depending on hours and shifts worked.

End-point assessment

EPA product code: 9056-12 City & Guilds is already assessing end-point assessment for Travel Consultant. As one of the biggest EPAOs in England, we pride ourselves on our first rate customer service. Our EPA team is on hand to support you every step of the way, guiding you through gateway and ensuring your apprentice has all the tools they need to prepare for the assessment. Our assessment and grading is standardised and all our assessors have industry experience and receive on-going training, so you can trust that we will deliver a fair and robust assessment. Assessment events for this standard are: • 2-hour multiple choice e-volve test • 1 to 2-hour structured meeting For further guidance, please refer to our handbook and end-point assessment pack. The handbook provides more detail behind the knowledge, skills and behaviours in the standard and the range of content within the standard. The end-point assessment pack includes detailed guidance on grading criteria for the EPA and the evidence you’ll need to produce for knowledge, skills and behaviours at gateway. You’ll find this in the documents section above. EPA preparation and gateway guidance for this standard: Upon registration for EPA, you will have access to a range of support material for Retailer to help prepare for EPA. EPA preparation tool: Our platform guides apprentices through online content to help them feel ready for their EPA experience. User-friendly technology takes the apprentice through a series of questions, to suggest material personalised to their apprenticeship standard and their confidence levels. The content is curated from across the web and covers areas like revision and exam skills, multiple choice test strategies, professional discussion and interview skills. You can watch our short video to learn more. Recording forms: supporting you to complete key stages of EPA readiness, we have prepared forms to give you peace of mind and confidence that everything is covered. These packs include a gateway declaration form that is needed during the booking process and assessment forms, if required, that apprentices might need during assessment. LIEPA reports: Our lead independent end assessors (LIEPAs) produce an annual report with insight into the EPA results and findings across all centres. These reports can help you refine your apprenticeship delivery to improve success rates. Apprenticeship certification As well as receiving their Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) apprenticeship certificate, the apprentice will receive a City & Guilds statement of achievement for end-point assessment.

How to register

If you’re an existing City & Guilds centre or interested in becoming a centre, make sure you’ve read our EPA manual and guidance. This will explain the process and all our terms and conditions. Our short ‘how-to’ guides and videos are a great start to help you get to grips with what to expect and how to stay on track when booking EPA and preparing apprentices for assessment. You’ll find these resources in our EPA document library . To use our quality-assured on-programme materials or end-point assessment service there are three ways to either find out more or to order what you need: 1. If you’re an existing City & Guilds customer, go to Walled Garden and select the materials you need or register your apprentice for end-point assessment. (You may need to submit a request to deliver if you don’t yet have approval for that standard.) 2. Get in touch with [email protected] . Our team can explain our different products and services and start getting you set up as a customer or give existing customers support on the new apprenticeship arrangements. 3. Speak to your City & Guilds Business Manager about how to access our products or how to register your apprentices with us.
