Los Angeles Travel and Adventure Show Returns After 2 Year Delay

With travel up 8% for spring trips this year compared to last, according to one travel expert, spring break is the first big trip this year people are itching to book., by mekahlo medina • published march 12, 2022 • updated on march 12, 2022 at 9:07 pm.

If the COVID-19 pandemic has had you feeling cooped up at home for the past two years, and you're looking to travel somewhere new this summer, experts at the Travel and Adventure Show in downtown Los Angeles can help you plan safely and wisely.

"We're excited to be back," said Jonathan Golicz, vice president of the Travel and Adventure Show. "Not only are we back here at the convention center this weekend, but travel is back and we cannot be more excited about it."

This show, like those in years past, not only hosts the experts but the color and character of more than 350 destinations vying for travel guests.

The excitement was visible in the crowds coming into the travel expo, which was dormant for two years due to the pandemic.

"“My wife and I are itching to get out," said Randy Silva, a Torrance resident at the expo.

According to travel expert Sarah Dandashy, 37% of people polled are planning to travel during spring break, which is right around the corner for many people. That's a big increase from the 29% of people planning to travel during spring break in 2021.

With travel up 8% for spring trips this year compared to last, spring break is the first big trip this year people are itching to book, Dandashy said.

For those traveling via plane, masks will still be a reality at least through spring break season -- the TSA announced on Wednesday that it is extending the mask mandate on planes and in airports until April 18.

If you're excited to get out in the world but concerned about COVID-19, Dadashy says there are options for every comfort level, with road trips, vacation rentals, and all-inclusive resorts all still very popular.

"Do what makes sense for you... what makes you comfortable," she said.

With the cost of gas, and other factors, still uncertain, Dandashy suggests that if you find a deal now, you should book it -- even if you can't travel until later on.

"...Book direct, take advantage of loyalty/rewards programs, and ultimately, book now to secure the best rates…  and travel later," she said.

8 Places You Should Book in April for May Travel

Apeksha Bhateja

  • Travel News

Destinations in the U.S. and abroad to book now.

M ay is shoulder season. This time between off-season and peak season is warm enough for some places without being uncomfortable (here’s looking at you, Europe) and relatively less crowded. Summer rush is still weeks away, so you pay less than what you would have to shell out in the busy months of July and August for airfare and hotels. Book these destinations quickly this month and enjoy the perks of slightly lower demand and often perfect weather.

Yosemite, California

National parks have something to offer every season of the year. In May, Yosemite glitters with gushing waterfalls after the snow melts and the flow is at its peak. You can spot Yosemite Falls, one of the world’s tallest at 2,425 feet, from various places in the valley, or hike a steep trail to see the wonderful Chilnualna Falls, hidden from sight behind rocks.

This time of the year, the snow isn’t a deterrent, so you can also rent bikes and ride around eastern Yosemite Valley (though some trails may be flooded or wet).

WHERE TO STAY

Memphis, tennessee .

Elvis Presley’s fans will love a trip to Graceland any time of the year, but May is special due to the month-long Memphis in May Festival, a cultural celebration with street music, barbeque contest, and river run with an after-party. (And featured on the Fodor’s Go List in 2018.)

Washington, D.C.

Spring in D.C. brings beautiful blooms. You might miss cherry blossoms in May, but the weather is wonderful and the city is ready for play in the sun. Plus, where better city to celebrate Memorial Day than the capital? If you’re here, salute the heroes with events and learn more about the history of the city (and the country) with walking tours. Attend the National Memorial Day Concert on May 26; watch marching bands and floats during the parade on May 27; visit the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument; and spend some time at the city’s museums.

Tulum, Mexico

You will find perfect weather in some parts of Mexico all through the year. Since it’s such a short flight from the U.S., it’s a feasible option. That’s why spring breakers and summer travelers fly south, especially to the Riviera Maya.

Tulum is a favorite from February to April, but after the rush dies down, May gives you a breather from the crowds while still promising lovely weather, plus beaches, Mayan ruins, and nightlife.

Related: 28 Ultimate Things to Do in Tulum

Halifax, Canada

It’s the beautiful coastal views that make Halifax so picture-perfect. You’ll especially enjoy one of the world’s longest boardwalks when the temperatures rise in May. Nova Scotia’s capital is also a window into the history and culture of the region, so plan a visit to the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History , the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 , and the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site .

This is Canada, and the outdoors are not just appreciated but celebrated. You’ll find opportunities for boating and fishing, and Nova Scotia in general is a great destination for seafood lovers.

Paradise Island, The Bahamas

From June to September, hurricane season keeps away tourists from the Bahamas. Meanwhile, December to April are high-tourist seasons, so the shoulder month of May could give you a good window for a holiday. The temperatures rise and you will also see more rain than the preceding months. But fewer crowds mean that diving will be more fun and you’ll get a spot on the beach to yourself. Plus, there are plenty of resorts to keep you hydrated.

Oslo, Norway

Daylight is back in Scandinavia after a cold, harsh winter. In Norway, days get longer in May, and fjords and gardens bloom with pretty flowers. Go north a little bit to see the marvelous phenomenon of midnight sun. The sun doesn’t set in the summer months and Svalvard enjoys this the long daylight from April 20 to August 22.

The month of May is particularly important for the country. May 17 is the day when the constitution was signed in 1814 and it’s a big party in Oslo. You’ll see parades and marching bands, people celebrating in the traditional costume of bunad, and lots of ice cream.

Sophisticated ‘burglary tourists’ fly from South America to rob wealthy homes, LAPD says

Los Angeles Police Department headquarters is seen on Feb. 8, 2022.

In the desert around Scottsdale, Ariz., on Monday, police officers hunted for a member of an international heist ring suspected of swiping jewels and luxury goods from homes across Los Angeles. Using helicopters and drones, they eventually found him hiding under a tree.

The wanted man, it turned out, was a 17-year-old from Chile.

Authorities say the teenager and his two adult accomplices later admitted to breaking into multiple homes, part of a growing trend of “burglary tourism” from South America.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the teenage fugitive was first arrested Feb. 29 in Pacific Palisades along with three other Chileans as they cased homes in the wealthy enclave. Police tracked down the crew after a security camera captured the license plate of their 2024 Hyundai Tucson amid a series of burglaries across East Hollywood.

Increasingly over the last five years , police officials say, thieves from South American nations have entered the U.S. for the purpose of committing robberies. In the case of Chile, authorities suspect some criminals are taking advantage of the tourist visa system, which does not require a background check for travelers. Once in the country, police say, they plan heist sprees and fence the loot before dispatching their earnings back home.

LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton told The Times that South American theft groups are not new in L.A., but they have become more active in recent months.

Although crime statistics show burglaries are on the decline overall, Hamilton said: “The number of crimes tied to these kind of crews are way, way up.”

He cautioned that it’s difficult to know for certain how many robberies can be attributed to foreign burglars, but said evidence indicates they are behind scores of break-ins. He estimated that north of the 118 Freeway in L.A. last year there were 94 burglaries, many probably committed by these crews.

Billionaire L.A. family claims racism at elite Westside country club

The son of a onetime Bel-Air billionaire is suing Hillcrest Country Club, a venerable organization created for those once banned from other elite L.A. social clubs, alleging racial discrimination and civil rights violations.

March 14, 2024

“They often target homes often connected to open spaces, hiking trails and canyons that give them access,” Hamilton said.

The groups mostly hit wealthy neighborhoods where homes have jewelry and high-value items that can be easily exchanged for cash, he said.

“They tend to not carry guns. They don’t want to get gun charges,” Hamilton said. “They sometimes carry jamming devices to disable home security systems.”

While Chileans are among the most common members of these criminal enterprises, Hamilton said, they are seeing other South Americans including Peruvians, Ecuadoreans and Colombians as well. The LAPD and other local law enforcement agencies have formed a task force dedicated to the problem.

“I can tell you that we have a significant increase in burglaries from organized groups that are outside this country, that are coming into the country, and they are targeting high-end residents,” LAPD Chief Dominic Choi said at Tuesday’s Police Commission meeting.

In one case on Aug. 17 of last year, Burbank police officers arrested a man identified as Felipe Leiva Solis, a 33-year-old Chilean national, after a woman hiding in the bathroom of her home called to report that four men had broken in through a sliding door. Leiva Solis was found in a nearby yard on Burbank’s North Parish Place and is suspected of four other burglaries across the city, according to court documents.

Leiva Solis was released on bail but picked up again on Dec. 19 in Glendale by police officers who suspect he was behind a string of burglaries in the city. He was among a group of three men who tried to flee on foot when their vehicle was stopped, according to Glendale Police Investigator Jackie Nguy.

In court papers asking for Leiva Solis to remain in custody, Nguy alleged the Chilean was part of “an organized burglary ring responsible for a minimum of ten residential burglaries in Glendale,” and also tied to other thefts in Beverly Hills and other counties.

4 Chileans stole from homes across L.A. in a case of ‘burglary tourism,’ police say

A Chilean burglary crew was apprehended in Pacific Palisades, police say. The three men and one teen came to the U.S. on tourist visas, according to authorities.

March 8, 2024

LAPD Det. Robert Hoebink said in a court declaration that Leiva Solis’ crew was tied to at least 30 burglaries in West Los Angeles alone. Hoebink alleged the Chilean used a fake passport to open a Bank of America account and wired more than $23,000 back home despite being here on a tourist visa.

LAPD officers on Dec. 27 nabbed three more of the crew allegedly tied to Leiva Solis near Coldwater Canyon Drive south of Mulholland when called to assist Beverly Hills on a manhunt for burglars. Inside a Ford Explorer, police said they found $1 million worth of stolen designer purses, clothing, watches and jewelry — all believed to be from a single heist.

Three more arrests would come the next day as LAPD investigators recovered more high-end items from the group’s base of operations.

On Dec. 30, another West L.A. burglary led Beverly Hills police to identify a white Mercedes GLS as tied to the crime, arresting a female driver and four other suspects nearby.

Abraham Pablo Herrera Montecino, left, Francisco Alegria Velasquez and Felipe Leiva Solis.

Leiva Solis is being held without bail and is slated to be back in court next week. He’s pleaded not guilty to three counts of burglary and one count of conspiracy to commit burglary.

Investigators say Chilean or South American crews are also behind hundreds of break-ins in Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Diego counties.

In Orange County, Dist. Atty. Todd Spitzer has aggressively prosecuted South American thieves and sued the federal government for failing to disclose its negotiations with Chile over visa requirements for travelers. He has called for measures to stop criminals from entering as tourists.

LAPD investigators believe a 16-year-old suspect used a hand-held device to create cloned ignition keys to steal muscle cars.

Feb. 29, 2024

Spitzer said the Chilean government has refused to abide by a requirement to provide the U.S. with the criminal history of Chilean citizens who use a visa program called Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA. The program allows Chileans residents to enter the U.S. for 90-day periods an unlimited number of times. Visa requirements vary between countries, but travelers from several other South American nations typically require visas with tighter restrictions before coming to the U.S.

Without criminal histories of Chileans, prosecutors have been largely handcuffed in trying to prove defendants are linked beyond a single burglary charge, Spitzer said.

The Chilean Embassy in Los Angeles did not respond to a request for comment.

Authorities said the Chilean teenage fugitive arrested in Arizona had fake Venezuelan paperwork when he was arrested in L.A. and had repeatedly tried to evade police. After he was arrested Feb. 29 in L.A., he told authorities his parents had left him alone in the U.S. with a family friend. Once he was turned over to L.A. County Children and Family Services, he vanished after going for a walk in Lakewood, police said.

When he was eventually recaptured this week, Scottdale Police Chief Jeff Walther said the teenager had “court documentation from his crimes he committed in California and before fleeing to Arizona ... and some property we are trying to tie to other burglaries.”

How buying gift cards could help save on travel for your next vacation

ABC News' Becky Worley tested out the big box travel discount.

Travel can get expensive and add up fast -- whether it's an Uber to the airport or paying more for checked baggage -- so finding a resource or tip to help save on getting to and from your destination can be worth it.

One such strategy includes buying and using Costco gift cards for airlines to save some money on purchasing flights.

ABC News technology and consumer correspondent Becky Worley recently tested out the travel savings idea for flights to take her daughter to a concert.

"I purchased a discounted airline gift card at Costco. I paid $425 for $500 worth of Southwest Airlines credit and used it on our flights to San Diego," Worley said.

Eric Rosen, director of travel content for The Points Guy, told "Good Morning America" that the gift card offerings at some big box stores "can be a tremendous deal."

The gift cards can be found in store or online for everything from airlines and lodging to travel experiences.

Currently, Costco offers a $500 Southwest gift card on sale for $450. Sam’s Club members can also snag the same gift card for the same deal, $50 off. The warehouse retailer also offers golf and spa gift cards for roughly 20% off of face value.

Sam's Club even has gift cards for Airbnb for $25 off.

At BJ's, customers can find $500 Delta gift cards for $490.

"Big box stores can vary their inventory, and sometimes they offer discounts while supplies last," Rosen explained. "With a current Southwest discount through Costco, that's while supplies last. That's not gonna last forever."

Because travel gift card deals can fluctuate often, customers may see some of the best prices around tentpole shopping events like Black Friday and Travel Tuesday, but they come and go all year long.

There are also limits to the number you can purchase: For example, at Costco, members can only purchase five Southwest cards per customer.

One caveat that Worley found was that not every travel offer on these big box sites constitutes a discount.

"When we used some of the sites to book travel, hotels, cruises, flights, we found prices that were the same and in some cases a little higher than if we booked directly with the travel retailer," she said.

Passport-free travel in Singapore is here — but only for certain travelers

By monica pitrelli,cnbc • published march 20, 2024 • updated on march 20, 2024 at 6:12 pm.

  • From Tuesday, people traveling via car between Singapore and Malaysia can show self-generated QR codes rather than handing over their passports at two checkpoints.
  • Authorities estimate the new procedure will reduce immigration processing time by more than 30%.

Singapore made global headlines last year when the government announced that biometric processing will replace travel document verifications at Changi Airport in the first half of 2024.

But the city-state is going "passport-free" in another area: its land border with Malaysia.

From Tuesday, people traveling by car between Singapore and Malaysia can show self-generated QR codes rather than handing over their passports at two checkpoints.

The new rule , which applies to those traveling via the country's Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, will expedite immigration clearance "without compromising on security," according to Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority.

Singapore residents and foreign travelers can generate QR codes via the government's MyICA mobile app. Group codes for up to 10 people can be generated for passengers traveling in the same car too.

Like before, travelers are then subject to a face-to-face check by immigration officers.

However, the QR-code clearance is not available to two groups of travelers: those entering Singapore for the first time and those using a different passport from previous visits.

The new procedure is expected to reduce immigration processing time by more than 30% — saving around 20 seconds for cars traveling with four passengers and up to one minute for cars with 10 people, according to authorities.

One of world's busiest border crossings

The checkpoint linking the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru to Woodlands in Singapore is one of the busiest international border crossings in the world.

From March 7 to 10, more than 1.8 million travelers crossed Singapore's two checkpoints that link the island with Malaysia, according to its Immigration & Checkpoints Authority.

Motorists coming from Malaysia wait to cross the immigration checkpoint to enter Singapore on March 31, 2023.

On March 8 — the Friday preceding a week-long break for Singapore public schools — a record-breaking 495,000 people crossed the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, exceeding the 485,000 travelers recorded on August 2019, it said.

Singapore plans to roll out the QR code clearance to more travelers crossing checkpoints via other modes of transport at a later date.

Part of a larger push

The QR clearance program is part of a larger push to modernize border control and security procedures in the city-state to manage higher traveler volume amid the crunch of its aging workforce.

Changi Airport's "passport-free" immigration clearance, which is based on biometric verification, is undergoing trials, a representative of Changi Airport Group told CNBC Travel.

A launch date for this program has not been released.

How much travel nurses earn in Modesto, California

Many nurses enter the profession to help others, but long hours, stress, and burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic have taken a toll on the profession, contributing to shortages throughout the health care sector. Traveling nurses alleviate some of these shortages, providing short-term relief to overburdened staff.

Vivian Health analyzed its proprietary data to determine how much travel nurses make in Modesto, California as part of a national analysis of the highest-paying cities for travel nurses . This analysis was based on March 1 data from nearly 600 U.S. cities, limited to those with populations of more than 10,000 people that also fell within the top 1,000 overall highest-paying cities for travel nurses.

Travel nurses in Modesto earn an average of $2,760 per week—about 4.4 times the weekly average income per capita in the area. Modesto travel nurse wages in March were about the same compared to the previous month.

Since the 1970s, nurses have traveled around the country to supplement hospital staff when they experience an influx of patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals nationwide experienced higher patient numbers and called on travel nurses to help. The increased workload also contributed to many nurses leaving the industry altogether. By the end of 2021, about 100,000 nurses quit or transferred to roles outside of patient care, a four-decade high, according to Health Affairs.

Many who stayed in the profession have opted for travel nursing, with more considering this option. About 12% of U.S. nurses say they will work as travel nurses in the coming year, up from 8% who planned to pursue travel nursing in 2019, according to a major AMN Healthcare survey from May 2023. The stat is slightly higher among hospital nurses, 15% of whom said they would work as a travel nurse in the coming year.

Travel nurses work on a contract basis. Most contracts last between eight and 26 weeks but can be as short as a few days or up to a year. Many nurses appreciate the flexibility of contract work, which allows for breaks between stints and the opportunity to experience different areas of the country.

Travel nursing can also be more lucrative than salaried staff nursing; when a hospital is understaffed, travel nurses can negotiate for more money, particularly if they have technical expertise. Across the U.S., registered nurses earn an average of $89,010 annually—or about $1,712 per week. By comparison, travel nurses earn an average of $2,128 per week, according to Vivian Health data.

Many of the highest-paying cities for travel nurses are in California, which is among the highest-paying states for travel nurses, at an average of $2,332 per week. The most lucrative cities for travel nurses on this list range in size—as urban, suburban, and rural communities all need help covering nursing shortages.

Follow a mile-by-mile map of the total solar eclipse

On April 8, the sun, moon and Earth will enter the precise alignment of a total solar eclipse. The moon will block the sun, casting a shadow across a strip of North America from the Pacific Ocean west of Mexico, through 15 U.S. states, to the Atlantic off Canada.

This strip, roughly 4,000 miles long and 115 miles wide, is called the path of totality. For a short while, everyone and everything in this path will experience midday darkness.

The beginning

2:07-2:11 p.m.

Total time eclipsed

Cloud icon

Historic cloud coverage

The moon’s shadow makes landfall in Mexico at 2:07 p.m. Eastern time, casting the first region into darkness. Here, darkness lasts for about four minutes near the center of the path, but decreases in time toward the edges.

A populous path

Nearly 32 million people live in the path of totality this year. The eclipse crosses the homes of more people in Texas alone than the 2017 eclipse crossed nationally.

Eagle Pass, Tex.

2:27-2:31 p.m.

The eclipse crosses into the United States in Eagle Pass, Tex. The border town will be dark for 4 minutes and 23 seconds — over a minute longer than the 2017 eclipse lasted anywhere.

2:35-2:39 p.m.

A 195-mile stretch of Interstate 35 between Austin and Dallas is in the path. Texas officials are already warning drivers not to stop on roadways during the eclipse. You'd have to drive 1,950 miles an hour to keep up with the moon's shadow.

2:40-2:44 p.m.

The nation’s second busiest airport, Dallas Fort Worth International, lies in the path of totality. The airport said flights will not be affected. Some airlines are even offering special flights timed to the eclipse to extend your time in totality.

Hot Springs National Park

2:48-2:53 p.m.

In Arkansas lies Hot Springs National Park, one of two national parks in the path of totality. Parks across the country, even those not in totality, are planning livestreams, shows and talks for the eclipse.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways

2:55-2:59 p.m.

Just like many humans, Smokey Bear is also traveling into the path of totality. A 97-foot-tall hot air balloon bearing Smokey’s face is traveling from New Mexico to the Ozarks to remind visitors how to prevent wildfires.

Carbondale, Ill.

2:59-3:03 p.m.

Just past the Mississippi River is Carbondale, Ill., which has billed itself the “Eclipse Crossroads of America” because it sat in the path of the 2017 eclipse.

Check the forecast

At this point in the path, the weather forecast becomes critical for eclipse seekers. The areas from here on are typically cloudier in April than the previous areas, according to an analysis of cloud cover data.

3:13-3:17 p.m.

The eclipse crosses the Cleveland Guardians’s baseball stadium on the team's home opener at about 3:15 p.m. But rather than be interrupted by nearly four minutes of darkness, the game will start two hours after the moon’s shadow passes by.

An influential eclipse

The eclipse next passes over land historically populated by the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois. Researchers disagree on when the Iroquois Confederacy was established. But tribal oral history indicates the Seneca joined the alliance shortly after witnessing a solar eclipse, which researchers suggest occurred in this area in 1142.

Burlington, Vt.

3:25-3:28 p.m.

About 13,000 schools are in the path of totality, including more than 300 in Vermont. Some plan to incorporate experiencing the eclipse into their lessons, but others plan to let kids out of school early to help avoid traffic bottlenecks.

Piscataquis County, Maine

3:30-3:34 p.m.

The final 150 miles of the Appalachian Trail lie in the path of totality, including Mount Katahdin, the highest point in Maine.

Gulf of St. Lawrence

3:32-3:35 p.m.

The eclipse finally passes over Prince Edward Island before its last hurrah over Newfoundland in Canada, completing its North American journey in a bit more than two hours.

Totality at 2:07 p.m. EDT

Blue Angels back in Pensacola as new IMAX movie set to debut

T he Blue Angels have returned to Pensacola, Fla., after their annual winter hibernation in California and, as their 2024 show season gets underway, a new IMAX movie featuring the Navy’s precision flight team is set to debut.

“Soar With The Blue Angels” chronicles a year with the elite squadron, from selection through training and the show season, according to the Blue Angels. The movie will premier exclusively in IMAX theatres on May 17 before it begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video May 23.

But for those in and around Pensacola Naval Air Station (NAS Pensacola), there will be ample opportunities to see the Blue Angels in person, as the squadron’s practice dates have been released.

With the viewing area behind NAS the National Naval Aviation Museum , located on the base, has reopened to the public and can accommodate up to 25,000 people, according to the museum. Public access to the base was closed after a 2019 terrorist attack, but it reopened for public access last May.

Here’s the schedule for Blue Angels practices (* denotes days when the Blue Angels sign autographs following practice):

  • March 26, 27 *
  • April 2, 3 * , 9, 10, 16, 17 * , 23, 24 * , 30
  • May 1 * , 7, 8, 14, 15 * , 28, 29 *

  • August 21 * , 27
  • September 4 * , 10, 11 * , 17, 24
  • October 16 * , 22, 23 *

Gates for the viewing area open at 9:30 a.m. on practice days, with the Blue Angels taking off at 10:30 a.m. — although the museum notes practice times can vary, so it’s best to check the schedule before arriving at the base.

There is bleacher seating which can accommodate up to 500 people. The museum also rents chairs for $6 each, and concessions and merchandise are available. The museum does not accept cash.

Other information, such as identification required to enter the base and parking can be found on the museum website .

As for the Blue Angels show season, in addition to a show in New Orleans this weekend, plus shows in Pensacola on July 13 and Nov. 1-2, the team will perform at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery during the Beyond the Horizon Air & Space Show on April 6-7.
