1) Can I also participate in the Flanders Fields Gravel Tour with an MTB or cyclocross bike?

Answer: yes, on day 3 the “Roubaix stage” is even possible with a regular racing bike provided that you choose an appropriate (thicker) tire choice. Stage 2 is very suitable on a mountain bike if you do not (yet) have a gravel bike. We are currently investigating whether there are gravel bike manufacturers who would like to rent out some gravel bikes for promotion and testing for these three days. And what are the conditions for using such a bicycle for 3 days? It goes without saying that the bicycle must be returned in the same condition afterwards. The possibility of subsequent purchases must also be included in this rental option.

2) Can I handle those daily distances?

Answer: There are also shorter versions every day with the exception of the opening stage. At 123 km, the 1st ride is also not something for untrained legs. But we assume that anyone who opts for the full 3 days will be able to easily digest those largely flat 123 km. Given the time of year (end of May), anyone who includes this Flanders Fields Gravel Tour in their program should have sufficient preparation time to be able to physically handle this. For comparison: the Ardennes stages in the LCMT mountain bike tour were always around 90 km, unpaved, many elevation meters and even the often rocky descents required effort and energy.

3) What do I get for my registration amount?

Answer: a high-quality Herfenking cycling jersey, retail value €79, is automatically included in the package. Both for those who ride the full 3-day event and those who can only cycle the weekend stages. Furthermore, the goodie bag is not to be missed, €10 goes to the good “make PEACE not war cause" and you will of course enjoy the signposted top course, supplies, technical assistance, etc. We are convinced that you will come for either the 3-day or Only the weekend formula gives you a lot of value for your money.

4) Can I get accommodation through the organization?

Answer: the youth hotel 'De Iep' already makes 60 beds available that can be booked through the organization. The price for this will be very democratic. In any case, with breakfast and the rooms, which usually have 4 beds, can also be filled by 2 or by 3 without additional costs being charged to the participants. We are also looking at 2 or 3 other similar complexes in the nearby area to see if the same is possible. As soon as a concrete quote has been agreed with those accommodations, you will be able to book them directly online with us. If you are interested, please send an email in advance so that we can keep you informed.

5) How is the 'chrono' organized?

Answer: either via Strava (most people already know this principle, the technical explanation is communicated to everyone anyway. Or via a specialized company. However, for the latter - especially because it is the 1st Flanders Fields Gravel Tour - we require a minimum number of participants who are willing to pay an additional amount of EUR 10 for this. Or we must succeed in finding a sponsor for this (currently the plan) so that every participant can participate in that chrono formula at no additional cost. 2 demarcated chrono zones are organized every day. provided for this time recording. The intention is of course that outside those chrono zones you respect the highway code as well as other road users. How long will those 'chrono zones' be? This depends on their selectivity and the permission to work with signalers here (at any crossings or turns). The 'chrono' remains unofficial. The Flanders Fields Gravel Tour is therefore not an official cycling race or 'race'.

Daily start of each stage at the Crack-stadium of KVK Westhoek (football club)

The organization of the first Flanders Fields Gravel Tour is taking shape. We have an agreement with KVK Westhoek – the football club from Ypres in the 2nd national amateur division – to organize the reception and the start there every day. There are plenty of showers and changing rooms in the catacombs of this footbal ground. And the cafeteria is also large enough to serve as reception area in the morning. In addition, there is a lockable area where your bicycle can be temporarily stored safely (of course also guarded). There is  ample parking in the area (see plan). Easily accessible via the Zuiderring and yet close to the center of the fortified city of Ypres. The intention is to finish at least the final stage on the Grote Markt (central square) in Ypres, because it feels so much greater after a final passage through the famous Menin Gate. So via the Menin Street (and Biking Box bicycle experience center) you will make a finish in style at the historic and a very impressive Grote Markt. From there you can cycle back to the football stadium within 2 kilometers, if you want to shower and change there afterwards or perhaps take your parked car again.

Get this unique and very stylish Poppy-Gravel bicycle shirt!

During this Christmas period, many of us are quietly starting to define our cycling dreams and ambitions for next season. The LCMT-new style in 2024 will therefore be a gravel tour: In Flanders Fields and including a portion of historic cobblestone zones from Paris-Roubaix on the final day.

2 daily timed zones will be announced later for those who enjoy a bit of competition. But also and especially the unique and very stylish souvenir shirt, the Poppy Graveltour jersey - included in your registration package! - appeals to the imagination and should convince you to come over for this 3 days Gravel Tour In Flanders Fields? View the preliminary shirt design here and know that you will get your own FIRST NAME + NAME (or 'nickname' if you prefer) printed on the back (shoulder height).

Member of your own cycling club? Maybe you and your club friends can send us your own club logo? This will also be applied to the side panels, so that the shirt will be completely personalized.

We are now busy reconfirming and looking for (new) sponsor partners. The goodie bag will certainly contain a lot of 'delicious' and 'interesting' items. Registering now is worth it, because until mid-January at a discounted rate!

Date and tariffs are fixed now: 24 till 26 May and all-in arrangement from 199 EUR incl. Poppy-Flanders Fields Gravel-jersey!

After consultation with the local Ypres hotels and the City of Ypres, the organization date of the first Flanders Fields Gravel Tour has now been definitively determined. The three-day gravel tour will kick off on Friday, May 24. A weekday, we realize that. But a weekend at the end of May in which sufficient accommodation capacity for the participants can be guaranteed. And enough space in the already busy touristy Ypres to neatly plan this Flanders Fields Gravel Tour during that weekend.

Anyone who really gets a kick out of gravel bikes and who wants to fully take on the sporting challenge will hopefully be able to get 1 or 2 days off from work to be there on Friday for the opening stage. For those who are unable or unwilling to do so, we will retain the weekend formula. Both are possible and always including the unique and personalized Poppy-Flanders Fields Gravel cycling jersey retail value 79 EUR). The only difference will be the commemorative medal that can also be obtained. For this you actually have to be at the start for 3 days.

Please note that EUR 10 of your participation will also go to a Make Peace Not War-selected charity. More about that later.

Initially, the registration price (excluding accommodation to be booked separately by you) is EUR 199 for the 3-day event (with goodie bag, commemorative medal, cycling jersey and of course the full package service during and after the stages, in accordance with what was also customary in the LCMT) . Early booking pays off, because after January 24 there will be an additional charge of EUR 10.

Weekend only? Available for only EUR 139, also including the cycling jersey, which already represents a value of EUR 79.

Registrations open on November 11. Use the correct link, either above or via www.flandersfieldsgraveltour.bike

We are still updating www.lcmt.be, but know that all the most up-to-date information can be found on the flandersfieldsgraveltour.bike website.

Flanders Fields Gravel Tour powered by LCMT (18 - 20 May 2024, Pentecost)

The new style LCMT (22 editions organized since 1999) will resolutely opt for gravel in 2024 and rename itself for the occasion as “Flanders Fields Gravel Tour powered by LCMT”.

  • In its pioneering years, the Low Countries' Mountain Bike Tour was the first multi-day organizer of MTB events to connect the rolling Dutch Limburg and the Ardennes with the Flemish Ardennes and West Flemish Heuvelland (or Flanders Fields). Afterwards, the LCMT evolved into a pure Ardennes adventure during the Ascension weekend. In addition to new formulas such as the CYLCO, the COMBI tour, a Cross-duathlon and even a real triathlon. After several difficult (covid) years, organizer Biking Events wants to organize a 'powered by LCMT' three-day gravel event starting on Friday 24 May, till Sunday 26 May 2024. With interesting foothills in Northern France and the infamous cobblestones of Paris-Roubaix as a dessert on the final day .
  • We choose Ypres for this three-day trip, where Biking Box (Cycling Experience Center) is also located. In the Flanders Fields Gravel Tour we connect two famous cycling classics, gravel-wise: Ghent-Wevelgem (with a start in Ypres since 3 years ago) and Paris-Roubaix. We also cycle past the many sites of the First World War (Battle of Passchendaele) and pass by KOERS! (Roeselare cycling museum). This LCMT new style focuses fully on the many cycling assets that the Westhoek and Northern France (French Flanders) have to offer.
  • As a participant you will be able to choose the formula WITH or without accommodation. The fascinating tourist infrastructure in and around Ypres offers something for everyone (budget). In this way, the Flanders Fields Gravel Tour powered by LCMT becomes an all-in happening again. A cycling experience party spread over 3 days (and nights).
  • Participation is possible in 3 ways: whether you ride the full 3-day Gravel Tour (incl. a precious souvenir), or you can only ride the 2 weekend rides, or you register for 1 stage on Saturday (stage 2 that is kind of a gravel version of what one can experience when riding Ghent-Wevelgem).
  • The proven success ingredients of the LCMT are incorporated into the Flanders Fields Gravel Tour. A beautiful course, excellent supplies, a well-organized all-in package, lots of atmosphere in the après-bike moment afterwards and a well-stocked nice goodie bag. The unique commemorative cycling shirt (linked to the 'Poppy shirt' distributed by Biking Box) is in principle always part of this. You also support a 'Make Peace Not War' charity! And you can have it personalized with your own club logo (detailed information will follow).
  • You can ride the Flanders Fields Gravel Tour with a gravel bike, mountain bike or cyclocross bike. Along the way, at least 1 'chronozone' will be indicated every day where anyone who wishes can compete with the others. Not an official cycling race, but a sporting test of strength on a very selective piece of off-road.
  • The three-day Gravel Tour will also be included in the cycling calendar of the Flanders Cycling Federation (so anyone who has a permit as a cycling tourist or rider does not have to pay additional insurance).
  • Early registration pays off: those who register before January 15 can do so at a favorable rate and also have a chance to win extra rewards.

Lodgings during your mountainbike holiday in Ardennes

The upcoming LCMT mountain bike holiday as we will call it in 2023 already offers direct opportunity to register for the MTB experience and to stay overnight. We now have agreements with 3 accommodations.

On the one hand and can be booked directly through us: the Youth Hostel of Bevercé (Malmédy), at 60 EUR per night (2 nights min. Possibly also the night before with dinner each time). Use the registration system that you can also access via our REGISTRATION webpage. And add your requested arrangement in terms of accommodation!

On the other hand, we also offer direct accommodation via 2 nice and high-quality hotels: the Daft Hotel (click on the link!)   for which we will pass on the correct price per person (based on the type of rooms and glampings) during the spring break. Also just agreed: the MY HOTEL , where you can book a double room for 2 nights (currently scheduled from 19 to 21 May) for only EUR 127 per person (2 nights), half board! Strong conditions, given that this is also a brand new accommodation. How to book My Hotel? You send an e-mail to  [email protected]  while mentionning the promo code 19-21/05 LCMT . On that moment you 'll get the advantage tariff. Also not forget to say that this a half-pension (breakfast and evening dinner) formula!

Now developping: 1st edition of the new Flanders Fields Gravel Tour (Ypres, end of August '23)

Biking Events (since 1999 organizing also the LCMT mountainbike tour  in the Belgian Ardennes) is launching a new cycling event: the 1st Flanders Fields Gravel Tour. Also a three-day tour, but now from the home base where Biking Box Cycling Experience Centre is located: YPRES! With this we are fully committed to the many cycling and historical assets that Flanders Fields offer.

Recently we have been working hard behind the scenes to make this unique gravel three-day event possible in 2023. In close collaboration with the Royal Ypres Cycling Club, which itself will be responsible for the international UCI junior race "Route des Géants" on August 27, we will soon also officially present this new top weekend in terms of cycling experience in Ypres and the Westhoek.

The proven success ingredients of the LCMT are incorporated into the Flanders Fields Gravel Tour. An excellently arranged all-in package, coupled with the option to book accommodation immediately.

A maximum of 550 participants (by analogy with the nearly 55,000 names on the Menin Gate Memorial) can obtain a participation certificate as soon as registrations are opened.

On the final day it will also be possible for 'locals' to register for that one day only (always subject to registration in advance, so no longer the day itself). And there is the option to sign up as a 'gravel' cyclist for 'Coureur & Entrepreneur', a previously successfully proven bicycle concept for cycling entrepreneurs who get to know each other better in a cycling atmosphere. “Coureur & Entrepreneur” was already a direct hit in 2022, then only with a guided tour on the road. Now that the off-road option of the Gravel Tour also becomes possible at the same time, a maximum of 30 Coureur & Entrepreneur tickets for the Gravel portion will be made available.

You can ride the Flanders Fields Gravel Tour with a gravel bike, mountain bike or cyclocross bike.

The three-day Gravel Tour is also included in the cycling calendar of Cycling Flanders (those who have a license as a cycling tourist or cyclist do not have to pay any additional insurance).

Pending the official press presentation, as well as the new specific website, we as an organization will now first strive for all necessary permissions, in particular for the course section that we would love to run partly on northern French roads. To be continued.

First Flanders Fields Gravel Tour, a new Biking Box-project end of August '23

Biking Events is launching a new cycling event: the 1st Flanders Fields Gravel Tour, from the home base where the Biking Box Cycling Experience Center is located: YPRES! With this we are fully committed to the many cycling assets that the Westhoek has to offer. Will this work in 2023? It indeed looks that way. From Friday 25 to Sunday 27 August we hope to be able to set out 3 challenging gravel rides. This will be done in close cooperation with the Royal Yperse Cycling Club (also organizer of the Kattekoers and La Route des Géants). Currently, a lot of work is still going on behind the scenes. But we hope to be able to announce this officially and with complete information as soon as possible. The tried and tested principles of the LCMT will in any case also be incorporated, being an all-in arrangement linked to the option to book accommodation directly. The latter partly due to our new booking module, which we have been working on for some time. That module is now complete and it is only a matter of entering all the input (read: finding accommodation providers willing to also offer overnight arrangements via the registration module).

Of course you will find all about this new Graveltour on a brand new website, which now to be developped. All will be announced smoothly from half January!

Enjoy again this 2022 edition of LCMT, for the first time with start/finish in Stavelot, raising cycling star in the Belgian Ardennes!

Roadbook LCMT 2022

Dear rider, with this  LINK  you can find the ROADBOOK of LCMT 2022!

Practical information towards the start of LCMT in Stavelot

Anyone who has booked a stay in La Fraineuse (ADEPS center, Avenue Amédée Hesse in Spa) will find an overview of all allocated rooms or chalets under this LINK . Practical information (such as key pick-up) is also explained there.

In this news item we also provide a lot of practical information about the start of the first LCMT in 3 years, for the first time in Stavelot.

* collection of starter packs in the STAVELOT sports hall: for CYCLO, TRIATHLON and COMBI only on Thursday morning (1st stage start) between 7:45 am and 9:45 am - for MTB and CROSS-DUATHLON it is also possible to pick up on Thursday afternoon between 4 and 6 pm in the same Stavelot sports hall to pick up your package. The pick-up time there is also planned on the morning of the first stage, so Friday 27 May from 07:45.

* parking in and around Stavelot is very accessible. Most parking zones are free. Here's a brief overview:

- near the sports hall and at the football stadium of RCS Stavelot (in front of the football stadium, however NOT on Thursday morning because there is also a tourist bike ride there)

- along the Route de Challes

- at the abbey (drive up to the back)

- Stavelot market square (but bumpy cobblestones there)

- near the shopping center (e.g. at Okay...)

- Spa Racing: corner of Rue St.-Laurent and Route de Malmédy

If you don't mind a little warm-up: 5 km from the start in Malmédy, there are also a lot of car parks, including at the local football stadium of RFC Malmundaria.

* GPS files will be delivered to all participants via DIRECT E-MAIL and this at the latest 3 days before the start. Why not sooner? To accommodate late course changes if they still need to be implemented.

* Interested in sports massage after the ride(s): reserve your place already on this phone number: +32 485 94 50 45 Massages will take place both at the arrival area (football stadium RCS Stavelot) and in the ADEPS center of La Fraineuse, but this last only in the evenings. The COMPEX electrostimulation devices will also be available to recover the tired muscles as quickly as possible.

* finish of each chrono stage: under the finish arc, only the start mat will only be passed after a run-up phase, this to avoid 'traffic jams' and drumming.

* roadbook with all further practical information will be emailed to every participant in the weekend before the start. However, most information about the course and starting times can already be found on this website.

* yes, there's filming again! Our video team will try to portray the event nicely with daily videos and impressions.

* from now on no more cancellations possible, unless you introduce a replacement yourself (on May 18, 1 week before the start), so no more free transfers. Thank you for understanding.

Choose your distance in LCMT: XL, large or medium?

The LCMT is tailor-made for everyone, provided that the necessary physical preparations are taken into account. Not everyone has the capacity to cover the full distances for 3 or 4 days. Age, or available training time for those who have other, e.g. professional obligations, largely determines your cycling pleasure. Is the XL distance that is presented perhaps a bit too much? For that reason, the LCMT also offers shorter variants, referred to here as 'large' and 'medium'. On the racing bike, the 'medium' can only be obtained in advance and you will therefore only find the shortcut on GPS. For mountainbikers, all intermediate sections are again separately signposted. You will also receive a confirmation sign after each past turn with reference to the LARGE or MEDIUM choice you just made. Especially for those who cycle with time registration, it is important to take a good look there!

From now on you can pass on your choice of distance . Use this LINK and indicate which distances you will cycle daily. A second - not obligatory - question gives you the opportunity to revoke a previous formula choice with your registration. Suppose you had chosen MTB XL competition but you don't think you will get 'top' enough in May, then you can always pass on an adjustment with this link . The reverse is also possible, of course: upgrading from 'large' or 'fun rider' to XL and/or competition...

Is it important that you do this NOW? (message publication on January 26 = 4 months before the start) NO, take your time, there will be a reminder via newsletter mail anyway. At the latest 6 weeks before the start, around mid-April, you are expected to stick to your choice. Because around that time, the starting numbers will be ordered by name and the assigned numbers are of course linked to the formula you have chosen.

What if you cycle along purely recreationally, so without a chrono? Mandatory answers are then not necessary, but it does provide direction for our supply calculations to be able to estimate how many people will now cycle on the XL distance on the basis of all the information obtained? And how many opt for shorter variants. On the XL you visit 3 supply zones every day. If you drive Large or Medium, you will usually encounter less supplies along the way.

What about Combi, triathlon and duathlon? They don't have to do ANYTHING, because the distance formulas are fixed here: COMBI drivers always do the XL if they want to appear in the final classification. Triathletes also cycle the full XL distance, except for the ladies who are expected to ride the 'large' cycling distance. Duathletes always 'bike' the 'large' or therefore slightly shorter distance, since they also have to run before and after.

LCMT date now from 27 till 29 May in 2023

Important announcement: the LCMT mountain bike & cross-duathlon 2023 will move 1 week to the Pentecost weekend: Saturday 27, Sunday 28 and Monday 29 May 2023 will therefore be the 3 stage days. Reason: totally unexpected and unintentionally overlooked by the municipal government of Malmedy (excuse me, sic!) There are too many one-off other manifestations during the Ascension weekend. As a result, neither the sports hall nor the surrounding area is available to the LCMT. This was only communicated to us at the beginning of this week.

We immediately searched together for an alternative, as close as possible date. The Pentecost weekend – only 7 days later – was and is the most obvious solution. Of course we hope that you are not put off by this. An extra week of training may not even hurt that much? However, it should be clear that a month ago when the LCMT was approved in Malmedy, no one thought about the additional and one-off event crowds in Malmedy. As it is claimed there, this only applies to 2023. In 2024, the Ascension weekend would offer room for a 3-day event like the LCMT. Who knows, in the future it may sometimes be useful that we can choose between the two long weekends.

The name alone is a symbol of senseless military violence and so the museum seeks to provide a reminder for future generations. The dugout tunnel with communication and dressing post, headquarters, workplaces and dormitories, provides an idea of how the soldiers had to live underground, like moles, because there was nothing left above. It’s impressive, as is the museum with its collection of historical artefacts, images, movies and dioramas. Complete your visit to the museum outside in the trenches before heading into the park that surrounds the museum.

Tyne Cot Cemetery

Tyne Cot Cemetery ©Westtoer

Vijfwegestraat, Zonnebeke

With its arched wall and colonnades in white stone, the Missing Memorial of Tyne Cot Cemetery instils respect. This is the largest military cemetery of the Commonwealth in continental Europe. Almost 12,000 soldiers are buried here. 12,000 white crosses, row after row. We stand in awe. On the Memorial Wall are the names of the 34,957 soldiers who fell after 16th August 1917 and whose graves are not known. In silence, we move on to another cemetery, this time on the other side of the front.

German Military Cemetery

German military cemetery Langemark

Klerkenstraat, Langemark

Drive 4 miles from Passchendaele to the village of Langemark, where one of only four German war cemeteries in Flanders, can be found. Behind the monumental entrance lie more than 44,000 soldiers, half of them in a mass grave. Among them, are over 3000 cadets and student volunteers, which explains why the cemetery is also known as the Studentenfriedhof. The bronze statue of four grieving soldiers, by Emil Krieger, is very impressive. Slightly larger than life it immediately captures the eye, on entering the cemetery.

Grote Markt 34, Ieper

In Ypres , start with a visit to the hub of the WWI commemoration in Flanders Fields - the In Flanders Fields Museum . Entry is with a white bracelet with a red poppy on it, instead of a ticket. This museum - located in Ypres’ impressive Cloth Hall - focuses on personal stories reminiscent of the invasion, the trench war and the remembrance ceremonies since the armistice. Take time to slowly climb the belltower to have a look at what were once the battlefields.

YPRES MENIN GATE MEMORIAL

Menenstraat, Ieper

Take time to sample Flemish cuisine and the local beer before heading to the Menin Gate - by far the most famous Commonwealth war memorial in Flanders. On its white walls are engraved the names of 54,896 soldiers whose bodies were never found (the other 34,000 names we already saw at Tyne Cot Memorial this afternoon). Since 1928, each and every day, apart from the Second World War, the Last Post is sounded just outside these

The Last Post

Last Post

At the end of the day, this final experience is very emotive. The four buglers - in the uniform of the voluntary fire-fighters of Ypres - stand in line and the first notes sound like a call. If we can’t call the soldiers back to life, let’s send them “a final farewell at the end of their earthly labours and at the onset of their eternal rest”, as it reads on www.lastpost.be . There are many video clips of the ceremony on YouTube but as one comment on the videos says: “You must see this once in your life. If you are not moved by it, you’re made of concrete.”

Results and Highlights from the 2024 Tour of Flanders

The world champion attacked on the Koppenberg and he was no match for the rest of the riders in the Ronde van Vlaanderen.

108th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2024 men's elite

Grey skies and consistent rain: it must be the Tour of Flanders.

The conditions were fitting for the the second Monument of the season—arguably the best of the bunch. The 2024 Ronde van Vlaanderen brought more thrills as we continue to chug through the best part of the cycling season.

Here’s how both the men’s and women’s races played out at the 2024 Tour of Flanders.

108th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2024 men's elite

Van der Poel captures record-tying third Flanders victory

Mathieu van der Poel won the 2024 Tour of Flanders, making his definitive move with 43 kilometers to go, and once he did, he left no doubt about it.

It was a vintage cycling scene up the brutal cobbled Koppenberg with 43km to go in the race. It was there that it was all blown apart. Van der Poel laid waste to the rest of the field up the treacherous climb, that gets as steep as 22% at its worst. While many of the riders had to dismount their bikes and try to run up the hill, van der Poel (have you heard he’s a cyclocross star?) stormed ahead. His advantage only grew after that, and it quickly became apparent that it was a race for second.

108th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2024 men's elite

The world champion and Alpecin-Deceuninck leader solo’d for the last hour of the race. It’s van der Poel’s third win at the Tour of Flanders, tying six others for the most wins in the Momument’s history.

Pedersen tried some interesting tactics to try and steal it from van der Poel. The Ghent-Wevelgem winner from a few weeks ago gapped the peloton with over 86km to go. He was able to establish an advantage over 25 seconds, but was eventually reeled back in before the Paterberg.

Luca Mozzato (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) was a surprise second place, out-sprinting a strong field of riders at the end to grab a podium spot, 1:02 behind van der Poel. Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates) was third in the same time with Michael Matthews (Team Jayco-AlUla) relegated.

21st ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2024 women's elite

9 years after her first Flanders victory, Longo Borghini wins for a record second time

While the men’s race lacked drama in the final hour, the women’s race packed a ton of action into the last 45 kilometers, once the riders got on the nasty Koppenberg. In the end, Elisa Longo Borghini sprinted to the win—with the help of a teammate—to win the Tour of Flanders for the second time in her career, nine years after winning the race in 2015.

Longo Borghini won a three rider sprint to the finish over her Lidl-Trek teammate Shirin van Anrooij and Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon–SRAM). Van Anrooji provided the leadout for Longo Borghini, who seized the opportunity at the end and out-sprinted Niewiadoma for the victory.

Longo Borghini is the fifth rider to win the Tour of Flanders twice. No rider has ever won three. It was a 1-3 finish for the Lidl-Trek squad to cap off a big day for the team.

The Koppenberg proved to be a pivotal moment in the race. The unbelievably steep climb—made no easier by wet and rainy conditions—claimed many victims. It broke the race apart, with two-time defending champion Lotte Kopecky, as well as her SD Worx-Protime teammate Demi Vollering, among many others losing ground

Those two, along with van Anrooij, were able to make their way back to the lead group. Van Anrooij wasted no time and launched an attack off the front when the chasers rejoined the lead group. From there, she was able to gap the field.

21st ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2024 women's elite

With 12km to go, Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma caught van Anrooij, and the chase group—including Kopecky, Vollering, and Marianne Vos—didn’t have the power to bridge the gap to the three leaders and it set up to be a three-rider race to the finish.

Longo Borghini handled the Koppenberg well, and rode arguably the most consistent race of the other contenders in the race. Surely, that helped her in the end, as she was able to catch van Anrooji for the run into the finish, and sprint to the win.

There was no three-peat for the world champion Kopecky, who won Flanders in 2022 and 2023. Going for a record third win in the classic, she spent much of the latter part of the race chasing down gaps. Vos took fourth, winning the sprint of the best of the rest on the day.

Tour of Flanders 2024 – Analysing the contenders

Update: Van der Poel's rivals start falling by wayside before race day as Dwars door Vlaanderen crash wreaks havoc

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Matteo Jorgenson (Jumbo-Visma)

The second Monument of the year is nearly here and at this year's Tour of Flanders the scene is set for an intriguing battle over the 270km from Antwerp to Oudenaarde.

There has been a reshuffling of the contenders list after the testing of the waters at the run-in races. Some potential favourites have dropped down, or even off, the list while others have made it clear that their rightful place is near the very top. Mads Pedersen and his Lidl-Trek team, for one, delivered a reminder of the power in team strength after an impressive Gent-Wevelgem victory over Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck).

Still up until mid-week the spotlight was largely focussed on the regular rivals of Van der Poel and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) as they looked set to face off for only the second time this road season at the cobbled Classic. Then Wednesday's Dwars door Vlaanderen changed all that, when Van Aert came crashing down and fractured his collarbone and ribs.

What's more, he wasn't the only contender involved, with Pedersen and his teammate Jasper Stuyven as well as Biniam Girmay all hitting the deck. It was a day that will leave an indelible mark on the Tour of Flanders, between the riders that are out and those not at their best because of the injuries they are carrying.

There will be plenty of others, though, that are ready to step into any gaps as the lure of the Tour of Flanders means many have named it as a key focus for the year. Though do they have what it takes to land a shot in the centre of the target? Cyclingnews runs the ruler over key favourites for the 2024 edition of the eagerly anticipated cobbled Classic.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

World champion Mathieu van der Poel is the top favourite in Flanders

The world champion has a record at the Tour of Flanders that makes him the most clear-cut of favourites plus he has delivered a run in that has done plenty to bolster his claim. Indeed, on the days ahead of the Ronde it's become clear that Mathieu van der Poel is in a world of his own .

The 29-year-old may have just started his road season in mid-March but it began on a strong note with a powerful showing at Milan San-Remo , where he may have come tenth but had utilised his clear strength to shepherd teammate Jasper Philipsen toward a sprint victory.

Then there was a win at E3 Saxo Classic – a key pre-Flanders test given it uses many of the same climbs and cobbles – and a second at Gent-Wevelgem so there is no doubt he has already built back to formidable form after his post-cyclocross season break. Still, the fact that he didn't win in Wevelgem, admitting he was still paying for the efforts at E3, has left his rivals with at least a glimmer of hope.

Still, a reminder of his history at the race could quickly dull that glimmer. His worst result from five starts is a fourth in his debut year, 2019. Since then Van der Poel hasn’t once budged from the top two steps of the podium.  Wins came in 2020 and 2022, with the rider who kept him out of the top spot most recently – Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) – not taking to the start line on Sunday while 2021 winner Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep) hasn’t exactly had flying form so far this season. Plus, if Van der Poel keeps up his pattern of the last four years – alternating second place and first – 2024 is the year he will celebrate his third victory.

Matteo Jorgenson and Tiesj Benoot (Visma-Lease a Bike)

Benoot and Jorgenson among the lead group late on at Dwars door Vlaanderen

The expectations of yet another intriguing showdown between Van der Poel and Van Aert came crashing down on Wednesday at Dwars door Vlaanderen when the Belgian hit the deck and fractured his collarbone and ribs . The absence of Van Aert has confirmed Van der Poel's status as the clear-cut favourite but Visma-Lease a Bike's win yielding focus even after Wednesday's crash demonstrates that they will not give up their Tour of Flanders ambitions easily.

The team, which already had Christophe Laporte out with illness and 2022 runner-up Dylan van Baarle out for the run up races, may have lost plan A but its solid options run far further through the alphabet. Matteo Jorgenson perhaps put himself at the head of that pile with his winning effort at Dwars door Vlaanderen, particularly as he had already come ninth on his debut at Tour of Flanders last year, won Paris-Nice in February and came fifth at E3 last week. There's also Tiesj Benoot, who has been in the top ten at the race three times and – with the exception of a couple of DNFs – in his nine times lining up at the race has at worst finished 13th. A fourth on Wednesday from among the group of four that came in behind his winning teammate, Jorgenson, was also a promising sign particularly as it erased some of the doubts about his condition given he abandoned the E3 Saxo Classic after a crash.

What's more, it was clear from the interviews after Dwars door Vlaanderen that the 30-year-old Belgian felt rotten about Van Aert's crash and was concerned about the part he played , saying that he thought his teammate hit his rear wheel. Helping the team win at the Ronde even without Van Aert, may at least provide some consolation.

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek)

Pedersen celebrated the win at Gent-Wevelgem

Mads Pedersen may have given every single one of Van der Poel's rivals hope as he proved the world champion was beatable at Gent-Wevelgem , but perhaps also at the same time instilled a little concern as the Lidl-Trek rider simultaneously proved just how big a challenge it may be to beat him. The cleverly played two-way duel with Van der Poel on the road to Wevelgem certainly showcased the power of Pedersen but also, once again, the Lidl-Trek team.

“You know Mathieu is one of the biggest stars in cycling. Without criticising my own team, none of us is on that level,” Pedersen said after the race. “If we want to beat guys like him or Wout [van Aert] or even [Tadej] Pogačar, we have to be with numbers and put pressure on them."

At the E3 Saxo Classic Lidl-Trek ended up with four riders in the top 11 and Jasper Stuyven in second before Pedersen worked his way up to the top step following the same strength-in-numbers battle plan at Gent-Wevelgem.

Given the success of the powerful teamwork – also often a winning difference in the women's squad – applying the pressure would seem likely to once again be a crucial component of the team plan. With riders like Stuyven, Jonathan Milan and Toms Skujins expected to be on the squad alongside Pedersen, they had the cards to play that could help them deliver another successful hand.

Though Dwars door Vlaanderen threw a spanner in the works. Pedersen, Alex Kirsch and Stuyven all crashed, with Stuyven immediately taken to hospital for checks and the team confirming that he had broken his collarbone and would require surgery.

Kirsch fractured a metacarpal on the right hand and will also require surgery while Pedersen, who initially returned to the bike but was ultimately recorded as a DNF on the results sheet "escaped with just abrasions and contusions". Lidl-Trek said the plan remains that he will race on Sunday.

Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost)

Italian contender Bettiol is a former race winner

There is only one rider on the EF Education-EasyPost line-up who, based on experience, knows exactly what it takes to win the Tour of Flanders, and that is Alberto Bettiol.

The Italian soloed to a victory in the 2019 edition after he surprised his rivals by riding away on the final climb of the Oude Kwaremont with 17km and then holding off all the big-name chasers. He has had a run of success this early season with a win at Milano-Torino and fifth place at Milan-San Remo, results that could bode well for him at the Tour of Flanders.

The latest test, Dwars door Vlaanderen, delivered both good and bad signs, as while he did make a key move before cramps at 19km to go took him out of contention.

Still, the team managed to find a spot not too far from the top of the lead places as Michael Valgren came over the line in eighth after having been on the move with Bettiol earlier in the race. He may well prove a valuable teammate for Bettiol again come Sunday.

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty)

Girmay in action at the E3 Saxo Classic

Biniam Girmay took a different approach to his season this year, starting in Australia to see if it would be a better run toward his key Classics goals. He hasn't had a lot to show for it so far in terms of spring results but last weekend's Gent-Wevelgem did deliver some hope that the Classics form he was hoping for is starting to show.

The 23-year-old Intermarché-Wanty rider came seventh at the race where he won the title in 2022 , finishing near the front of the reduced peloton that came over the line behind the break of Pedersen and Van der Poel.

Girmay made his Tour of Flanders debut last season but a heavy crash and a concussion put an end to his chances. Hopefully, the crash at Dwars door Vlaanderen hasn't taken him out of contention at an even earlier juncture this year. The Eritrean came down in the same fall as Van Aert and was taken to hospital for checks, with the team later saying that neither he nor his teammate Laurenz Rex, sustained any fractures.

Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious)

Mohoric leads Bahrain Victorious into the race

Ever since that spectacular Milan-San Remo victory in 2022, aided by a dropper post descent, Mohorič is a name that regularly pops up as one to consider in the favourites list. Still, longshot is definitely a fitting description for the rider at Tour of Flanders as it isn't exactly a race where he has form, still his record on the long race to the Ligurian coastal town wasn't staggering either in the editions before he went on to take victory.

Milan-San Remo is just one example of just what the rider can deliver at high-stakes priority events and on the run into this season the current Gravel World Champion had slated Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix as two targets he had his mind set on for 2024.

The Slovenian's best finish at Ronde van Vlaanderen from his three participations has been 21st. However, he has come closer to the podium in the race which has much in common with Sunday's event, the E3 Saxo Classic, where he came fourth in 2022 and seventh last year.

That said, he was 15th this time in what turned out to be a chaotic crash-heavy edition. That was followed by a 13th at Gent-Wevelgem, so the build-up hasn't been spectacular but the spark of a fifth at Strade Bianche and sixth at Milan-San Remo may yet be rekindled.

Tim Wellens and Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates)

Wellens is a co-leader at UAE in Tadej Pogacar's absence

Off to a strong season's start, Tim Wellens has two podiums and five top-five finishes since he began racing at Vuelta a Murcia in early February. It is his second place at Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, fourth at this week's E3 Classic and even his 12th at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and 13th at Strade Bianche that show his ability to contest the biggest one-day races with the best.

Racing on home soil during Belgium's cobbled Classics, Wellens has never quite pulled it together for the big show at the Tour of Flanders. His best finish in the 2021 edition was 25th. That's not to say he won't be among the contenders this year, even if he is among the second-tier behind the outright favourites such as Van der Poel, and Pedersen.

He lines up with Marc Hirschi , who, like himself, tends to favour the other Monuments: Milan-San-Remo, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Il Lombardia. The team also has a powerful rider in Mikkel Berg, António Morgado, who was recently second at Le Samyn. Of course, there is also Nils Politt , who has already performed well this spring, with a second at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and seventh at E3 Classic.

Matteo Trentin (Tudor Pro Cycling)

Trentin in action on the cobbles of Gent-Wevelgem

Matteo Trentin gives the second-tier Tudor Pro Cycling team a real contender at the Tour of Flanders. Last year, he finished in the top 10, his highest-placed finish of the 11 editions he has raced.

Signing with Tudor through 2026 , Trentin is a mentor and leader of the team but still brings his ambition to every race. During the Classics campaign, he finished ninth at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and, more recently, tenth at Gent-Wevelgem.

The challenging terrain moves up a notch at the Tour of Flanders, but Trentin has never shied away from difficult one-day races. More often than not, these routes are where he has shown his best career performances. Look no further than his fifth place at the Wollongong Worlds , second place at the Yorkshire Worlds, and fourth place at the Bergen Worlds.

He appears to be performing stronger as he races into the later years of his career, and he is the type of rider who can use his strength and experience to land on the podium in a race like the Tour of Flanders.

Kasper Asgreen and Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep)

Asgreen is a co-leader of Soudal-QuickStep's Classics hopes

Soudal-QuickStep – the Wolfpack – was once the ruler of the Classics, and now steps into Tour of Flanders with some possibilities, but it's certainly no longer the stand-out option.

Still, it's hard to write off riders like Kasper Asgreen , even when he has had a so-so run into the race with his best result of the season so far a 16th at Milan-San Remo – he hadn't exactly lit up the early season leaderboard either in 2021, before taking the top step at both E3 and Flanders. Even while still on the build after injury he came seventh in Oudenaarde last year too.

Asgreen, as a former winner, may have a strong claim but Julian Alaphilippe has unfinished business. The two-time world champion hit a motorbike on his debut while out front with Van Aert and Van der Poel in 2020.

Since then, he has raced the Belgian Monument twice, finishing 42nd in 2021 and 51st in 2023 after being caught up in a massive crash. This year he has put a big target on the race and his recent ninth at Milan-San Remo will provide some encouragement as he strives to turn his record at the race, along with his season, around.

Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla)

Matthews on the podium at Milan-San Remo

Tour of Flanders last year was a race better forgotten for Michael Matthews, as while he entered with hope after coming back with building form following COVID-19 he was quickly out of the action again due to crashes at the cobbled Classic. After that, the Australian commented on social media "Tour of Flanders I love you but sometimes you can be brutal, but I'll be back."

Now he is returning in 2024 with a far more promising spring and plenty of incentive to grasp a top result, having missed out by the narrowest of margins at Milan-San Remo in his photo finish sprint with Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck).

Matthews' best result at the race so far is in the year of his debut, with sixth, but his performance at Milan-San Remo indicates that if things fall his way in 2024 the podium could perhaps be within grasp.

A workout inspired by one of cycling's hardest races..

The Tour of Flanders is one of the hardest races in professional cycling. But first-time fans wouldn’t be able to tell that by looking at the race’s profile. It looks relatively flat for 271 km from Antwerp to Oudenaarde — the longest climb is only 2.2 km long — but that is far from the truth.

What makes the Tour of Flanders special are the 15+ helligen , the steep and often cobbled climbs that include ramps steeper than 20 percent. This Workout of the Week features 1-minute and 2-minute efforts that simulate the Flemish helligen .

The key factor in this workout is that every effort must be performed seated. In the Tour of Flanders, the cobbles (which are often wet and slippery) make it nearly impossible to get out of the saddle, even on the 15 to 20-percent gradients. The Koppenberg even has a 23-percent pitch.

If you want to turn this into a “pro-level” workout, ride 100km before starting the intervals to fatigue your muscles and burn thousands of kilojoules. To get the full Flandrien experience, do these intervals outdoors on short, steep climbs. Even better if the climbs are made of cobbles.

Seated Anaerobic Power (Beginner): ride for 1 hour in zone 2 as a warmup. Then, complete 4 x 1-minute seated climbs at 95-percent effort with 5 minutes recovery

How hard of an effort is that?

Seated Anaerobic Power (Advanced): ride for 3 hours in zone 2 (endurance) as a warmup. Then, complete 6 x 1-minute seated climbs at 95 percent effort with 4 minutes recovery*

*Pro simulation add-on : after completing the six anaerobic efforts, take four minutes of recovery, and then complete a 5-minute finishing effort to simulate the Oude Kwaremont + Paterberg combo at the end of the Tour of Flanders: 2 minutes full gas, 2 minutes rest, then 1-minute full gas

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

flanders fields gravel tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Discover the routes of the very first

Flanders fields gravel tour 2024.

flanders fields gravel tour

The first stage of this unique three-day gravel ride is 126 kilometres (78 miles) long and counts over 400 altimeters (1.312 ft)  past iconic places that breathe (cycling) history. Passages right through the Gasthuisbossen, Palingbeek and Polygon Wood are nicely interspersed with deserted country roads and unpaved railway beds.

Naturally, war history is never far away in this region: Tyne Cot Cemetery, Black Watch Corner, Passendaele. Today, these landmarks remain silent witnesses of a cruel time with the landscape still bearing the traces to this day.

And the link with cycling history is also nearby: the cyclocross track in Zonnebeke, cycling museum KOERS! in Roeselare...

In short, history was and is being written on these roads, a first ride that can count!

Route 1 (24 May 2024)

- gravel & (ww i + cycling) history - .

flanders fields gravel tour

The second stage of the inaugural Flanders Fields Gravel Tour does not shy away from the hills in West Flanders and Northern France! The 132-kilometers (82 miles) course flirts with the French border and serves those who take up the challenge with up to 1.260 altimeters (4.133ft) .

Items on the menu include: a double ascent of Kemmelberg (both the off-road variant and the legendary cobbled climb), Mont Noir, Mont des Cats, Rodeberg...

An undulating landscape with panoramic views à volonté.

The ascents follow eachother in rapid succession. Hopefully they still leave enough time to enjoy these mighty surroundings while the legs are struggling?

flanders fields gravel tour

Route 2 (25 May 2024)

- gravel & classic hills from ghent-wevelgem - .

flanders fields gravel tour

Route 3 (26 May 2024)

- gravel & cobbles/ roubaix experience - .

flanders fields gravel tour

The third stage can rightly be considered the icing on the cake of the multi-day event. A Paris-Roubaix Experience starting from Ypres including the Plougstreets!

A real challenge, no less than 168 kilometres (104 miles) long. However, the 600 altitude metres (1.968ft) involved pale in comparison to the more than 20 cobbled kilometres (13 miles) that have to be conquered.

French gravel and cobbled sectors are ubiquitous and downright ruthless, each one more legendary than the next... Auchy-les-Orchies, Mons-en-Pévèle, Camphin-en-Pévèle, Carrefour de l'arbre... Names like clocks that make even the greatest cycling heroes shake and tremble.

The Roubaix cycling track is not the end point of this ride but only a stop on the way back to Ypres. It's time to get that tyre pressure just about right.

Tour of Flanders live stream 2024: How to watch Flemish cycling, start time

With no Van Aert can anyone challenge Van der Poel?

It's safe to say that for Belgian cycling fans the Tour of Flanders is bigger than Christmas — way bigger. The climax to the Flemish cycling 'holy week' and the second cycling Monument of 2024 will see the worlds best Classics riders cover an epic 271 kilometers between Antwerp and Oudenaarde, taking in no less than 17 brutal cobbled climbs.

Read on and we'll show you how to watch Tour of Flanders 2024 live streams from anywhere with a VPN , and potentially for FREE .

Tour of Flanders 2024 live streams take place on Sunday, March 31. ►  Start time: 4.00 a.m. ET / 1.00 a.m. PT / 9.00 a.m. BST / 7.00 p.m. AEDT • FREE STREAMS — SBS (Aus) / Sporza (Bel) / Rai (Italy)  •   U.S. — FloBikes •   U.K. — Discovery+ • Watch anywhere — Try NordVPN

The build up is over and it’s time for the big one, the ‘Ronde van Vlaanderen’. The hype has been growing since opening weekend in late February and has now reached fever pitch with the whole of Belgium buzzing in anticipation.

Leaving Antwerp, the first half of the race is predominantly flat. Then, after 136 kilometers, the route arrives at the first of three ascents of the Oude Kwaremont and from here on it's brutal. The climbs and cobbled sectors come in rapid succession, each one hitting the riders hard and testing their strength and skill to the absolute limit.

The Koppenberg, the Mariaborrestraat, Steenbeekdries and Stationsberg will lead the riders to the climbs of the Taaienberg and Oude Kruisberg before hitting the Oude Kwaremont for a second time. Then the final combination of the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg coming just 13 kilometers from the finish line is where the killer blows will almost certainly be dealt.

Last year’s winner Tadej Pogačar has decided to skip the race this year so the role of favorite passes over to Mathieu van der Poel who is in scintillating form having destroyed the field to win the E3 Saxo classic and also take second behind Mads Pederson at Gent Wevelgem. It’s Pederson who will lead the challenge against Van der Poel.

The peloton rolled out under clear skies with everyone wondering just how they can stop Van de Poel winning his third edition to equal the record of three victories.

Read on to see how to catch the action from wherever you live.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
