Trolley Features

We have three trolleys, two white and one burgundy, which are all similar to the way to the trolleys looked in the early 1920s. They can easily seat 25 with standing room for another 8-10. They will includes an option for a bluetooth speaker and microphone if requested, and good factory air conditioning for all those hot, humid summer days in Richmond. They have social seating, unlike bus seating whereby everyone faces forward, and is much more open. The seat frames are intricate ironworks, again very similar to the look in the early 1900s. It has a cow catcher on the front and a great trolley bell! RVA Trolley and our sister companies, Segway of Richmond and Pedego RVA specialize in customer service with friendly employees willing and able to help realize your dreams for your wedding day or any other special events for you and your friends, family, or coworkers!

Q: Where do I meet the trolley?? A: For our public trolley tours, meet at our store at 1301 East Cary Street!

Q: What time should I be there for my trolley tour? A: Please arrive at either location 15 minutes before the tour departs to allow time for check-in and allow for 10-15 minutes to find a parking spot. "We have lived in Richmond for 13 years now and Saturday was the first time we took this tour. Our guide was personable and knowledgeable. She had done quite a bit of research on her own, and she added those learned tidbits to our tour. She has inspired us to get out and explore and learn more about the city and it's history. This is a great tour to introduce your out of town guest to Richmond. The tour was about 2 hours. In that time we went from one end of Richmond to the other. We had used a groupon coupon for our fare. But I have to say, even without a coupon the fare will be worth the experience."

–jane m - Richmond, Virginia

"We took the Grim tales and Ghost tour Friday night. We had a great tour. The host was very knowledgeable of the area and told great stories about the buildings you drive by all the time and don't have a clue about their significance. "

-Dolphindelight - Richmond, Virginia

"Great guide and expert driver. Everyone on the trolley had a good time with all the highlights of the Richmond area on full display. Well worth the time for visitors and native Richmonders alike"

-Patricia Ballinger

"We hired RVA Trolley to provide transportation for our wedding guests to/from our ceremony/reception as well as to separately drive our wedding party around downtown Richmond for photos after our ceremony. All of their drivers were incredibly professional, on-time, and stuck to our decided upon routes. Hendley, our coordinator, was easy to work with, prompt with communication, and able to answer all of our questions. The trolleys definitely added a personal touch to our wedding and provided a great photo opportunity for our party and guests alike. While driving around on the cobblestones downtown wasn't the most comfortable, this unique experience is something we are definitely glad we pursued and would highly recommend to anyone else for events in the RVA area. "

Traveler Reviews

The content of the tour was excellent, the guide was excellent, but the noise from the vehicle engine made it very difficult to understand what was being said and greatly detracted from the enjoyment.

Stephen is most knowledgeable and a walking encyclopedia on all things Richmond, Virginia. He makes sure to include each tour participant as he talks about the history of the city. We also got great recommendations for restaurants and other tours, such as Hollywood Cemetery.

Interesting tour. Lots of history. Loved seeing the architecture and different neighbor. Guide was very knowledgeable.

My wife and I moved to Virginia several months ago. Our daughter had given us gift certificates for the tour and we finally found time get on board. It was one of the most memorable experiences we've had since moving here. Steven was very knowledgeable about the city and its history. He was personable and highly entertaining. He made the history of the area come alive. DeAndre did an excellent job of driving, and even offered a few historical facts of his own. Steven wore a microphone connected to a sound system that made every word clear and distinct so we old folks didn't have to strain to hear. The compartment was comfortable climate-wise. The windows were large enough to allow clear viewing of landmarks. The tour covered the entire city to give a wide perspective on the history of the area. This tour is something that one could do multiple times and still be both informed and entertained. I will recommend this tour to all my friends and family. It is a must-do for anyone interested in history in general and the city of Richmond in particular.

We were only in Richmond for a short overnighter and had never been there before. This tour was an excellent way to get a quick overview of the city and its rich history. The guide was excellent - not sure how he managed to cram so much information into a little over two hours, but he was very knowledgeable. A more open air trolley car would have been nicer as it was a little difficult to see some of the sights being pointed out, and the bench seats were a bit uncomfortable after a couple of hours. But all in all, it was well worth the investment.

This tour was such a great way to see this beautiful city and learn about it's proud history. The tour guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic to share information about the city he so clearly loved!

I thought this tour was okay. We did a tour in Washington DC that was way more interactive. We only got off the trolley once to take pictures, which was kind of a bummer. There was a lot of time spent talking about the University, which I wasn’t too fond of. Overall, the tour was good. I wish we would of been able to get off more, but the guide was very informative and had really fun trivia about Richmond!

Covered a lot of Richmond. Emily was our tour guide, Robert was out driver. Wish we could have gotten out at a few more places. Driving down monument circle couldnt see the statues, only saw base of statues.

We only had a few hours to see the sites of Richmond. The Trolley was a great way to see a lot of sites and hear some history in a short time. Highly recommend.

the tour was really a nice experience. The negatives: the trolley was really rough riding and noisy. At one traffic light a moped was directly behind us and drowned out the narrator. I guess that if the AC was on and the doors were closed it would have been better.

  • I1451WNconnieb 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Terrible! The wooden dowel seats were very hard to sit on as our trolley's shock absorbers didn't work and the streets were often cobblestone. Maybe our tour guide was a substitute--I hope so-- because, although she was a friendly woman, she didn't give us much information at all. Almost nothing about the old neighborhoods we saw, nothing about the architecture. She did point out the historic church. When we paused to stretch our legs, my sister and I left the tour and just looked around by ourselves. Caught an Uber back. Get a different tour!! Read more Written March 19, 2024
  • hen2168 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Informative and comprehensive tour! It’s was a very comprehensive tour of Richmond(very informative) and gives me even more pride in my newly adopted city. Only suggestion is to bring something to pad your back/butt since trolleys seats are not comfortable. Also would appreciate at least one more stretch your legs moment or let the tour be a hop on and off option for the full day! Read more Written February 11, 2024
  • Texasamazon111 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Average w/ Room for Improvement While the guide was certainly knowledgeable, the tour was basically a history lecture. There wasn't a single stop to get out and see anything outside of the uncomfortable trolley - or even to stretch your legs. Many sites were photo worthy, but we could never get out to see anything but a passing glance. Some of the guide's comments were well intentioned but a little culturally insensitive. This wasn't horrible, but there is room for improvement. Read more Written January 13, 2024

Their friendly and knowledgeable personnel can provide guidance on what to see, as well as almost anything with wheels to go see the sites. Bikes, both pedal powered and electric, are available for sale or rent. Guided tours are also available via Segway, Gem Cars, or trolley. The trolley looks old fashioned and the tour takes two hours. • GoogleUser78028 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great Tour - Fabulous Tour Guide! Steven was a wonderful tour guide! We are a group of families of WWII veterans and we meet every summer for a reunion. We book a private tour in each location we visit. Steven’s tour surpassed most every tour we have been on, and we thought he was the best guide we’ve ever had.! The audio system in the trolley allowed his voice to be heard clearly and his delivery was excellent! Our driver was excellent as well! Thank you both! I was just reviewing some of the former reviews about the seats being small, etc. It’s a trolley! The ONLY reason I did not give a five star rating is because the air conditioning in the trolley was not working properly and it was a very hot day in Richmond. In spite of being a little warm and uncomfortable, our group only had nice things to say about the overall experience! Read more Written July 24, 2021

Two hours pass very quickly as you are lead through this beautiful historic city. I love all the architecture (some dating back to the 1700’s), amazing ironwork and incredible views. We only have two days to see Richmond this overview is a great way to narrow down what we really want to see. Per Steven’s recommendations we had lunch at Mama J’s and toured the Capital building. Both were wonderful. Read more Written October 10, 2019

I took my out-of-state family on this, thinking it'd be good for those who - due to health problems - couldn't really see RVA any other way. Air conditioned trolley tour sounds great, right? AC is not built for the trolley. Some had some serious heat related issues due to no shade, no windows that opened, and insufficient AC. PLEASE update this - then I think it'd be nice. Our guide was Steven Pugh, a native of Richmond who provided us with a running commentary of the history of Richmond and the architecture, the people, the happenings in the city, especially relative to and after the Civil War. This tour of the city gave us such a greater understanding of the city and a greater appreciation of it that is simply indescribable. This tour, at least with Steven, is a cannot miss tour. The only negative is over the 2 hour duration of the tour the wooden seats on the trolley got real uncomfortable. Read more Written October 4, 2019
  • Jemmie33063 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A nice way to be introduced to Richmond Emily was our guide and she truly loves the city, the trip takes about 2 hours with one break to enjoy a lovely view. The trolley was only running once a day because of the heat and the trolley even though air conditioned gets warm when it is full. This was a good way to get an overview of Richmond. If you are interested in the Hollywood cemetery, this tour does not visit that area of town. Seek other tours for that area. Read more Written August 17, 2019
  • tmacco1 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles never understood the volunteer tour guide because of loud engine. Seats hurt my butt! Tour guide gets on with boom box and a microphone. I moved closer, so I could understand but the engine was so loud, the car so squeaky, that I never understood everything he was saying. Not a comfortable ride. They need to add a real public speaking system in the bus, upholster the seats and find a way to quiet the engine. Read more Written July 25, 2019
  • ImKlem1 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fun on Segways!! We had so much fun on this tour!! Our guide was knowledgeable and fun (I’d like him to take a photography course though, LOL), and because he was able to talk and ride simultaneously, we spent lots and lots of time riding! For 2 full hours, we wended our way through a very busy, important city, learning history we had forgotten. The price was very reasonable and the entire staff was fun!! I’d highly recommend!!! Guide "M" was not great. Trolley got too warm, despite being billed as air conditioned. Tour was as much current day Richmond advertising as historic tour. We wanted 1700s and 1800s tour, which we got, but not so much the urban renewal and local festival highlights. Visual aids, like a map or historic photos, would have been helpful.
