Just a quick review to say how great it was working with Punta Cana Tours. The communication was timely and professional. The game itself was a great authentic experience and our guide was a perfect host acting as a translator (and negotiator!) when we needed. Great trip–don’t hesitate to work with Punta Cana Tours to get off the resort for a bit–WELL worth it.

We booked roundtrip airport transportation, a tour of Santo Domingo and a baseball game through Punta Cana Tours. We were also able to attend a pro baseball game in San Pedro de Macorís, DR, where we had the pleasure of watching the home town team, the Estrellas Orientales (the Stars) beat the Tigres del Licey. We were supposed to go to a game in LaRomana, but when we got to the stadium we learned that the game’s location had been changed to San Francisco, DR. Our guide was able to scramble and get us to another game about an hour’s drive away. We had a great time!

My husband and I loved the Winter Baseball game. The tour was incredible and without their experience it wouldn’t have been the same. Our guide spoke excellent English and Spanish. She taught us all so much about the wonderful country of DR. We learned things that you just wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn without her. The baseball game was excellent. For 3 hours everyone of us was the same. Bonding with the local’s and enjoying an sports event. Thank you so much. Our next trip we plan on using this company again.

We went to the DR for a family wedding, and as it was Dominican winter baseball season, decided to catch a game to experience baseball Dominican style. We had a great time watching the Toros del Este beat the Licey Tigers 6-0. It was fun watching the game and interacting with other baseball fans. Felt perfectly safe the whole time. Enjoyed some excellent fried chicken, too. Highly recommend this tour for anyone who is a fan of baseball! It’s a great way to leave the resort behind and have a real Dominican experience through the common language of baseball!
Audrey (verified purchase) – January 6, 2018
I went on the baseball tour with my family and it was outstanding. The game was absolutely fantastic – a really authentic and fun experience. There was a ton of energy at the stadium and it was great to be a part of it. We chose to do this tour because my dad is a huge baseball fan. He was excited to see some major leaguers there and to chat with other like-minded fans on the tour. It was really the highlight of our entire trip to the Dominican Republic.

First came to this area 35 years ago as a US Peace Corps Vol. I wanted to arrange a special trip to La Romana to see a baseball game and they handled all the details including negotiating the pricing for the hats at the game for 6 of us This company is locally owned. Special compliments!

Was desperately searching for a baseball tour before leaving Canada and we found one! Sent an email to Punta Cana Tours and the communication was great! We were picked up ( 2 couples) and another couple was on the tour from US (they were such a fun couple) and off we went to La Romana for a Toro’s and Estelles baseball game. We would definitely use Punta Cana Tours again!

What is the closest baseball stadium to Punta Cana?

Where can I see baseball in the Dominican Republic?
There are 5 cities with professional baseball teams in the Dominican Republic: Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Francisco de Macoris, San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana. For visitors coming to Punta Cana the closest and most accessible stadiums are located in La Romana and San Pedro de Macoris.
What is the baseball town in the Dominican Republic?
San Pedro de Macoris is widely considered the Dominican Republic's most prominent baseball town. This is the city where baseball began in the country and is also the area where nearly every major league baseball team has a training facility. This small Dominican city has developed scores of professional players like Sammy Sosa, Robinson Cano, Fernando Tatis, George Bell and Jose Offerman to name a few.
Who brought baseball to the Dominican Republic?
Sugar production was a new boon for the Dominican Republic in the late 19th century, especially for the town of San Pedro de Macoris. Immigrants working the sugar plantations came from the eastern Caribbean and brought with them the game of cricket. But, the plantation owners were mainly American and convinced their workers to switch to baseball. Local Dominicans picked up on the game and San Pedro continues to be the center for Dominican baseball to this day.

Do I need Dominican pesos on the baseball tour?
The excursion includes 2 drinks (beer, soda or water) and pizza or fried chicken for each person. If you would like to buy anything additional, it's easiest to use a credit card. Most stadiums may accept dollars but at the best rates. You can also bring Dominican pesos but it's hard to know exactly how much you need.

Baseball Baseball has been played for many years in the Dominican Republic. Through the years they have produced many well known MLB players we all know. Sammy Sosa, Juan Marichal, Manny Ramirez, Vladimir Gurrero, Alex Rodriguez and many more. Local teams of similar ages will be our hosts as we visit their island.
You know that major league baseball has been dominated by many new Latin players lately. With the advent of several new baseball complexes and training facilities, many of these Latin players are from the Dominican Republic. Baseball is big in the DR and there are many teams for us to play. We are being hosted by Asociación de Cronistas Deportivos de la Republica Dominicana, Inc. They do have professional, adult and youth leagues and baseball is numero uno. We’ll be playing teams of similar age and abilities in different locations each game. We’ll be using some of their better facilities as we sweep the other teams for the week on their home ground. One day, we will attend a local professional minor league baseball game of either the Diamondbacks or Dodgers farm teams. Our team will be made up of US players from various leagues and organizations from all over the country.
Schedule and Agenda This trip is scheduled to take place in the Winter of 2008. Most flights seem to be connecting in the southern parts of the US, Houston, Miami, Phoenix, Atlanta etc. It’s a good days travel from just about anywhere and will probably take a full day to get from your home city to the Dominican Republic. You’ll probably be arriving in the afternoon or evening. We’ll start the trip when you arrive at the airport in Santo Domingo where we’ll be met at the airport by one of the travel agents who will help us get to the hotel for check in. This first day will be devoted to gathering us up and decompression. All other scheduled activities will begin the next day.
Our departure flights will probably be in the mornings, this will get you back home the same day. You are, of course, welcome to come earlier or stay later on your own. If you do, you’ll be responsible for your own transportation, food and accommodations during those times. A preliminary detailed agenda is shown below.
All in all, between the baseball and the tours, this will be a very busy schedule that will give you a great experience and a chance to see some of the sights of the Dominican Republic. You’ll have lots of opportunities for evenings out after the games, tours and dinners. There may be some nights where we’ll go out as a group or you are welcome to go out on your own.
Outline of Schedule for 9-days and 8 nights
Dates February 24-March 3, 2008 . You will arrive in the Dominican Republic by Sunday, Feb. 24th, and depart on Monday March 3.
You are, of course, welcome to come earlier or stay later on your own. I may come a few days early or stay an extra day or so or possibly off to another island. Carnaval in the Dominican Republic is Feb. 24-March 2. If you do extend your time, you’ll be responsible for your own transportation, accommodations, food etc. during those times.
Cost We need at least 10 players for this trip to happen, plus any additional non players. Costs is $1,895 not including air fare. These costs are based on staying at 3-4 star hotels in double occupancy. If you want a room to yourself, add $475. Flight costs are about $500 from the west and $400 from the east coasts in the USA. Sign Up To sign up for this trip you need to fill out the application form and send a $500 deposit and make your airline reservations. The balance of funds will be due by the first week of January 2008. If for some reason, the trip does not happen, all deposits held by me will be returned in full. Any deposits forwarded to the travel agents are subject to their return requirements. Other than threat of war or natural disaster, the only reason it would not happen is if we do not the min. of 10 people on the trip and it looks pretty good for getting that at this point.
This trip is for amateur baseball players. Wives, girl friends, family members or other tourists may also attend. You will need a valid passport and be able to obtain a tourist visa upon entry to the country.
Roster We need a minimum of 10 players and it looks like we have that already. We’ll have a maximum of 14 players. We can take an unlimited number of friends, wives, relatives, girlfriends, kids and others. These are encouraged and may attend as support staff or just tourists.

We’re Back! Summer 2022 Dominican Republic Trip!
Posted on Dec 21, 2021 Dec 22, 2021 in Goodwill , Photo Galleries , Player , Press , Travel Tagged Baseball , Charity Program , Cultural Immersion , Dominican Republic
It’s with the utmost enthusiasm that Global Baseball Adventures announces it’s first trip back to the Dominican Republic since the summer of 2019! After spending more than a year creating a detailed health & safety plan, GBA is confident in bringing high school athletes back to the Dominican Republic for a life changing week of baseball, community service and cultural immersion!
At the core of every Global Baseball Adventures trip lies our “Play, Live & Give” motto and the 2022 trip is no different! Read below to discover how GBA is going to utilize this motto to guide the 2022 trip as well as ensure that all attendees reap the benefits of this life changing experience while adhering to the highest level of safety standards.
Isaias Franco, founder of Global Baseball Adventures, has stayed in close contact with all partner teams across the Dominican Republic and to say that they’re excited to play against this summer’s team of American high school ball players is an understatement!
Isaias has secured games across the island nation with top level teams and is visiting with each team at the start of the new year in order to play the ground work for games filled with fun, action and Caribbean flair! What excites Isaias most is the fact that several of the June 2022 games will take place on sandlot fields where it will be the first time an American team has ever set foot on these diamonds!
In addition to the sandlot games mentioned above, the June 2022 trip also marks the return to Juan Marichal Stadium located in the capitol of Santo Domingo! Juan Marichal Stadium is the home to the Licey Tigers of the Dominican Republic Winter League, the top professional team in the history of the DR! Juan Marichal Stadium is home to current MLB super stars Juan Soto and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as well as MLB legends Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz and more!
Time and time again, our trip attendees state that their most special memories from their trip revolve around the relationships and bonds made with their Dominican coaches/teammates who they spend the week rooming with, playing ball with, traveling with, practicing their Spanish with and so much more. Although our American ball players may live thousands of miles away and their daily lives may look different than their Dominican counterparts, by the end of the trip those differences fall by the wayside as both US & DR players create life long relationships via the exchange of smiles, laughter, teamwork and the love of baseball.
In planning for a safe return to the Dominican Republic, Isaias Franco has developed an in-depth safety plan. The safety plan includes all current CDC recommendations, the hiring of staff members who’s sole responsibility is to oversee disinfectant practices and much more. In addition to the safety plan, both US & DR trip participants (all coaches, players, staff members) will be fully vaccinated prior to the start of the trip in order to ensure the highest level of safety for all involved.
Since the start of the pandemic, the Dominican Republic government has set strict guidelines in order to curb the spread of Covid-19. Initially, the DR set a nationwide curfew to limit mobility outside of emergency transportation. Fortunately, due to a swift government response, the DR is one of only 18 countries worldwide to be at or below the CDC’s Level 2 Risk Assessment tier. The CDC’s safety tier system is composed of 4 levels with level 4 being composed of the countries with the highest risk to travel to. In order to promote vaccination and the highest safety standards for all citizens and tourists, the DR Ministry of Public Health announced on October 18, 2021 that all people have to present their vaccination cards to enter restaurants, stores, sports/entertainment centers, workplaces, schools & places of public use.
With an in-depth Covid plan in place, the CDC’s assessment of risk and the Dominican Republics safety nationwide safety standards, Global Baseball Adventures is confident that the summer 2022 trip will be one to remember for both the memories created and all of the additional steps taken to ensure the safety of our trip participants!
As is the case with all trips, our goal at Global Baseball Adventures is to use baseball as a vehicle to create change, bridge cultural gaps and inspire amateur ballplayers to become leaders who will make a positive difference in the world and this summer will be no different! Since this will be our first trip since June 2019, Isaias Franco is heading to the Dominican Republic in January 2022 to meet with local officials and community members in order to see what types of resources are needed to support our partners after the challenges they’ve faced navigating the pandemic over the past 18 months. In past years, our American ballplayers have not only made a difference in the lives of our Dominican friends through projects that centered on rebuilding homes, donating school supplies and providing impoverished communities with food necessities but just as important is the fact that upon returning home, our American ballplayers return stateside with a new outlook on life. This new outlook on life can be seen in the ways that our American ballplayers view life through a lens of gratitude for the opportunities provided to them at home and a desire to live a life of service. Stay tuned for more updates on the community service aspect of the June 2022 trip!

Baseball in the Dominican Republic

Find out why baseball is such a big deal here, where (and when!) to catch a game of “pelota”, and where you can find the hall of fame.
Baseball - or pelota , as it’s called here - is the official sport of the Dominican Republic, and it’s fair to say that it’s a pretty big deal. Despite this island nation’s tiny size relative to the United States, Dominicans account for more than ten percent of Major League players in American Major League Baseball!
In 2019, there were 882 players in the American Major League, of whom 251 were born overseas and a whopping 102 were Dominican. You might have heard of famous Dominican baseball players like Sammy Sosa, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez and Robinson Cano.
Parents teach young children how to play, always encouraging the next generation of world-class talent to rise up the ranks of the Dominican league. Being a baseball player is a great honor here in the DR, and many young people can be seen practicing in their spare time, dreaming of making it big.

The basics of major league baseball in the DR
Here in the DR, the major league sees six provincial teams face off each year from October through to the end of December.
The six major teams are:
- Estrellas Orientales (The Stars)
- Tigres del Licey (The Tigers)
- Leones del Escogido (The Lions)
- Águilas Cibaeñas (Cibao Eagles)
- Gigantes del Cibao (Cibao Giants)
- Toros del Este (Eastern Bulls)
The Tigers have the most championships overall, but on January 22, 2022 the Giants beat the Stars 8-3, much to the joy of their fans who’d endured a long drought between championship wins.
Each of these teams has their own stadium in their home province, and watching a game at one of these is a wonderful way to get involved in Dominican culture.
After the local season ends in late December, the winning team represents the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series, competing with teams from Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Cuba .
If you’re in the DR at the start of the year, you might be able to catch an international match while you’re here. The 2023 Caribbean Series will be initiated in Caracas, Venezuela.
How to get involved
Going along to a Dominican “juego de pelota” is just as much about the atmosphere as it is about the game. Don’t worry if you don’t know much about baseball - local fans will be happy to explain the basics.
Santo Domingo
In Santo Domingo, the Estadio Quisqueya stadium is home to the Tigres del Licey (blues) and the Leones del Escogido (reds). The stadium is easy to access from most Santo Domingo hotels, located on Avenue Tiradentes in the central city.
La Romana is the home of the Los Toros del Este baseball team. If you’re visiting during baseball season, which runs from October to January, you can join local crowds cheering on their home team at Francisco Micheli Stadium.
Santiago de los Caballeros
In Santiago de los Caballeros you’ll find Estadio Cibao stadium, home of the Cibao Aguilas baseball team (Go Aguilas!). Professional baseball games are held between October and January. Tickets start at DP $ 350 (about US $ 6).
San Pedro de Macorís
In San Pedro de Macorís, a city on the southeast coast, Estadio Tetelo Vargas stadium hosts the home games of Estrellas Orientales. San Pedro de Macorís is where pelota was first introduced to the Dominican Republic, by Cuban immigrants at the end of the 19th century.
San Francisco de Macorís
In San Francisco de Macorís, a small inland city southeast of Santiago de los Caballeros, not to be confused with San Pedro de Macorís, the Estadio Julian Javier stadium is the home of Gigantes del Cibao.
Visit the hall of fame near Santo Domingo
Want to see a Dominican baseball hall of fame? A 45-minute drive down the highway that runs out of Santo Domingo through Boca Chica , you can stop at the BHD Bank, where the lobby has been transformed into a baseball museum, full of memorabilia donated by players and fans.

About Dominican Baseball Camp
At Dominican Baseball Camp we want to create a fun filled trip with memories that will last a lifetime. We guarantee you play against competitive baseball teams and we will share the Latin American culture with you.
Sam’s passion for baseball led him to the Dominican Republic after college. Curious how such a small island in the Caribbean could be home to so many great baseball players he decided to visit. He spent four months on the island practicing and playing baseball with the locals. He dramatically improved his baseball ability, picking up the Dominicans’ excitement, energy and electricity for the game. In 2007 he founded Dominican Baseball Camp to share the passion for baseball and culture with others. We focus solely on baseball tours and put our focus on customizing a trip to meet the needs of the client.
We are a top-notch baseball loving team. We are made up of former pro baseball players, business minded individuals and charismatic folk doing what we enjoy. We operate with a hands-on approach and can manage every aspect of your trip.

2023 Dominican Republic Tour Recap and Photo Log
Day One – November 7, 2023
Day Two — November 8, 2023
We started the day with a welcome meeting that educated our guests on Dominican culture and the local baseball scene. After the meeting we made our way to the Colonial Zone for sightseeing and our Chu Chu Colonial ( @chuchucolonial ) train ride. We checked out many sites that remain from when Cristobal Colón (aka Christopher Columbus) and the Spanish settlers chose this location to set up shop in the Americas.
Obviously we came to eat! It’s not a trip to the Colonial Zone without a feast at Mesón de Bari. This is the most popular spot for traditional Dominican fair that was visited by Anthony Bourdain in his tv show, “Parts Unknown.” We enjoyed fried crab in plantain baskets, traditional Dominican dishes like goat stew, and amazing fresh passion fruit juice.
Once we wrapped up lunch we headed to Mercado Modelo which is the oldest market in Santo Domingo. This place is considered souvenir heaven because they have everything you’ll need at a low price.
Day Three — November 9, 2023
Day Four — November 10, 2023
We started off the day with a trip to Banco BHD which is the official bank of MLB. It’s where all Dominican and Venezuelan (and most other Latin American countries) prospects receive their signing bonuses. Our private tour from Carlos Gómez ( @cadigoliz ) gave us all the insights on signing day (formerly July 2 and now January 15) and what it’s like for Dominican players and their families to experience one of the most important days of their lives.
Post-lunch we headed over to the sparkling new Milwaukee Brewers academy for a private tour. It’s safe to say this is one of the nicest baseball complexes in the world, let alone the DR! Manuel Vargas ( @manuelchu87 ) showed us around the beautiful facility and our takeaway is that these Brewers prospects live in baseball heaven! We then stopped for pics at the academies of the favorite teams of most of our guest (Mariners, Orioles, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Nationals, and Mets) for photo opps!
Day Five — November 11, 2023
Day five started off with an impactful trip to La Isabela to visit the area’s Youth Baseball Program. Pachi was born and raised here and still lives with his family here now.
The Youth Baseball Program tour was amazing as always! We brought donations and handed out baseballs to every single player. ⚾️ We even had the opportunity to provide a small group of players with their first ever baseball mitts (s/o to Doug @dnacoug )! Huge thanks to Henry Gonzalez ( @henrygonzalezdr ) for helping us make this happen – we appreciate it! We also got the chance to meet Francisco Cordero ( @cordero_329 ), (3x MLB All Star and all time leader in saves along all Dominican players) and hear speeches from him too.
After the Youth Baseball Program visit we headed to lunch for some Oceanside Caribbean cuisine at Adrian Tropical ( @AdrianTropical ). We enjoyed Mofongo (mashed plantains with chicharrón or shrimp), “Boca Chica” while fried fish, and delicious fruit smoothies!
Then we packed up and headed east to Juan Dolio for segment 2 of our trip. After checking into our boutique oceanfront hotel, Hotel Casa Hemingway ( @hotelcasahemingway ), we settled in and headed to the Estrellas Orientales ( @estrellasbc ) vs Toros del Este ( @torosdeleste ) game. We made bets on the winner – and we definitely guessed wrong! John was the only one that bet on the Toros so he won some baseball cards. It was great to see a high scoring game after the combined no hitter the other night.
Day Six — November 12, 2023
Day six brought the sun and fun at our oceanfront hotel, Hotel Casa Hemingway ( @hotelcasahemingway ). We had all morning to soak up some Vitamin D at our private beach, lay out by the pool, get massages, and enjoy lunch at the only restaurant completely over water in the Caribbean.☀️🏝️🌊
After our free morning and afternoon, we headed over to Estadio Francisco Micheli for the second of a home & away series between Estrellas Orientales ( @estrellasbc ) vs Toros del Este ( @torosdeleste ) game. This matchup is known as the “Sugarcane Series” (Serie de la Caña) because this part of the country is known for its sugar cane plantations.
It was a low-scoring, hard-fought game, with the Estrellas coming out on top with a 2-0 win. We came tantalizingly close to our second no-hitter in a week, as Toros pitcher Paolo Espino ( @paoloespino ) held the Estrellas hitless through 7.1 innings!🥇
Day Seven — November 13, 2023
The last full day of our Main Tour was a fantastic finish! It’s definitely sad to say goodbye to some guests but we are excited to welcome a few new ones for our Northern Tour.
We kicked off the day with a visit to Academia Arias y Goodman ( @arias_and_goodman_b.a ) an independent academy. This was previously the Pirates’ academy until around 20 years ago when Alfredo Arias ( @alfredoariascuret ) took over. He now runs the academy that currently is home to 11 players that live there and several others that practice there almost every day, including many professional players. We even ran into Reynaldo Lopez ( @rlopez_40 ) of the White Sox who was working out there. We also chatted with Alfredo’s 14 year old son, Gabriel, who was born in the US and moved here at age three to live and pursue baseball. It’s inspiring to hear how dedicated and motivated he is! 👏
We then took an unexpected pit stop at the country’s oldest fire department! Yes, it’s still up and operating and many of the firefighters live there today. We ended up getting a private tour and demo from some of the team members which was definitely John’s favorite part of the tour since he’s a retired firefighter himself! It was great to see more action of the everyday DR culture. 🚒
After touring the fire station, we had lunch in town at Amable which is famous for its pasteles en hojas. This Dominican staple typically consists of mashed plantains or yuca and is filled with beef or chicken. People top it with ketchup, vinegar-heavy hot sauce, or mayo and obviously wash it down with their favorite fruit juice. 🥤
We couldn’t leave the area without a tour of the Ron Barcelo ( @barcelorondr ) factory. 🍹We had a private tour that guided us behind-the-scenes of each step in the rum-making process and the history of the brand. (It’s the most awarded rum in the country!) The best part? The smell of the factory barrels + the complimentary rum tastings. 🤤🛢️
We dined outside for our main tour farewell dinner at nearby El Meson Español. This spot has a giant Spanish menu including things like paella, tortilla española, and sangria. 🥘
As we closed out the main part of our tour, we said goodbye to some guests and welcomed others. It was a 10/10 week with tons of baseball, Dominican history, local cuisine, and our incredible guests. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped out for the past week – it’ll be hard to top! 🇩🇴
Day Eight — November 14, 2023
Day eight started off with a leisurely morning of yet another epic Dominican breakfast and choice of beach, pool, rest, or (maybe…) gym.
Then we hit the road for the long drive to Santiago, the primary city in the north of the Dominican Republic. Since it is a 3-4 hour drive, we stopped halfway at the famous roadside restaurant Tipico Bonao, which is a thatched roof joint with classic Dominican food. Favorites included stewed goat and shrimp rice, and of course the fresh tropical fruit juice.
Best part of lunch though was running into three great Dominican ballplayers! Sitting near us were former Expos great Mel Rojas; his son, and KBO/NPB star Mel Rojas Jr.; and big league infielder Alen Hanson. Alen Hanson ( @alenhanson ) and Mel Rojas Jr. ( @rojasjr_3 ) play for Licey, who we were going to see later that night, and were also on the way to the game. They were very gracious in talking to us, taking photos, and signing autographs.
Then it was the main event, Tigres del Licey vs Águilas Cibaeñas at Estadio Cibao. This is the biggest rivalry in the DR, arguably in all of baseball! Mel Jr. and Alen said that some say even a regular Licey-Águilas game is bigger than the World Series.
And the game did NOT disappoint. The Aguilas Cibaeñas ( @aguilasbbc ) are currently in last place and the season is still young, but that did not dampen the crowd’s enthusiasm or the players’ efforts one bit. The energy was palpable to start and kept rising as the game went on. The intensity on the field matched the engagement of the crowd – as Doug ( @dnacoug ) put it, “this is October baseball in April.” It was a back and forth battle, with both teams coming up with clutch hits. Visiting Tigres ( @tigresdellicey ) ultimately prevailed 8-7 (thanks in part to three hits including a HR from Mel Jr!), much to the pleasure of the boisterous minority of blue-clad fans. I had been hyping this game for months, and nobody was disappointed with the show we had at Estadio Cibao.
Day Nine — November 15, 2023
The primary symbol of the city of Santiago de los Caballeros is the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration. The impressive tower was built in 1944 by the ruthless dictator Rafael Trujillo, who ironically named it the “Monument to the Peace of Trujillo.” After Trujillo’s fall, the monument was rededicated to the founding fathers of the country.
We visited the monument on our first full day in Santiago, enjoying its sweeping views of the city and surrounding mountains and the accompanying cool breeze. Then we checked out the adjacent monument to the greatest players in the history of the Águilas Cibaeñas. How appropriate in the DR that statues of the great local ballplayers are so closely situated to the most prominent figures in the country’s history!
We then headed to Centro León, Santiago’s renowned cultural museum that was built by the heirs of the Dominican Republic’s largest tobacco empire. What started as a local art contest has become the primary art gallery and anthropological museum in the country. My favorite part was the impressive collection of artifacts from the native Taino people of the island.
We headed back to the hotel for a rest and then were off to San Francisco de Macoris to see the Gigantes del Cibao host the Estrellas Orientales for our last game of the tour. But first, we stopped for lunch in La Vega, at the local institution for Dominican fare, Restaurant El Zaguan. It was a tasty meal in a classic, ranch-style building.
A drive through the rice paddies of Cibao ended at Estadio Julian Javier, named for the patriarch of one of the most prominent Dominican baseball families, right up there with the Alous and Guerreros. It was a smaller weeknight crowd, but it of course did not lack in enthusiasm. The “Cacao Power” fan club and a local little league kept things lively, but the visiting Estrellas Orientales ( @estrellasbc ) prevailed. Over the Gigantes Del Cibao ( @gigantescibao ). Somehow, we did not see a home team win the entire tour! Good thing we aren’t invested in the home team winning.
Day Ten — November 16, 2023
Final day! It’s been a fascinating and joyful tour, but tomorrow it’s back to reality. First, one more day of exploration.
We started the day with a drive through the mountains to Altamira to visit Bartolo Colon Stadium. Bartolo Colon ( @bcolon40 ) built this impressive mountainside facility in the late 90s, before he even had his first big contract. He also built a school and church and donated a firetruck in this town, where he grew up working his family’s hillside farm. In fact, at the quaint museum attached to the ballpark we learned that his arm strength came from cranking the coffee fruit processor on the farm and his accuracy came from throwing rocks at coconuts to knock them down from the trees! We saw lots of artifacts from Bartolo’s past and also his incredible collection of signed jerseys in his garage (Griffey, Ichiro, Pujols, Clemens, Jeter, Big Papi, etc.).
We snuck in a quick game of “vitilla” which is a Dominican street game played with a broomstick for a bat and bottle cap for a ball. No wonder these kids can all hit!
Bartolo sponsors a prospect development program ( @academia_bc_40 ) that was practicing while we were there, which was neat to see. These kids eat, sleep, breathe baseball and it’s working because last year three players signed with MLB teams and this year there is one with a 7-figure signing bonus lined up.
We headed down the hill and tried the local staples of casabe crackers and dulce de leche with guava jelly on the way to the La Aurora cigar factory, the DR’s first. It was amazing to see the workers rolling cigars furiously to the tune of at least 400 per day! The factory was filled with smoke as many workers smoked on the job, and I’m feeling that in my throat a bit as I type this.
For dinner we went to The Circus Food Park ( @thecircusfoodpark ) in the shadow of the monument, a fun place with many options to eat, including Dominican-style sushi rolls with sweet plantains and avocado. The festive atmosphere was perfect for our tour’s farewell dinner.
It’s hard to believe that ten days passed so quickly. Our guests now are experts on the “Dominican baseball machine” and will always have a soft spot for the Dominican guys as they watch them play!

Testimonials from the 6th tool nation.
The Dominican Republic trip that I took with Trosky baseball still remains the fondest baseball experience of my life. I will never forget waking up at 6:00 am and working out with the Dominicans on the beach. It was also great playing in the small villages and major league complexes against the local teams. It was baseball heaven. This is a trip that every serious baseball player should make. It gives you a greater perspective on your life and teaches you a lot about baseball. I am thankful that Trosky Baseball gave me this wonderful opportunity.
The Presence of Coach Nate Trosky, Throughout my years in high school, I’ve had many teachers and coaches fulfill the role of a leader, many of whom I’m grateful for. Nate Trosky is a coach that I have had the opportunity to work with over the summer, in the Dominican Republic, and will continue to work with throughout this year. He has a craziness that you can’t turn away from and his approach to life and his incredible motivational skills are one of a kind. He has changed my life by challenging me to be better every day, both as an athlete and as a person. To describe him in words does no justice compared to being in his presence and feeling his passion for life and baseball. He makes me realize I can push myself further than I thought was possible. He gives so many examples and stories of kids just like me that now play professional baseball and make millions of dollars following simple steps that encourages his players. Nate Trosky is a true teacher that has forever changed my approach not only to sports but to my eating habits, study habits and all around commitment to anything I choose to do.
My trip to the Dominican Republic with Trosky Baseball was a great experience both on and off the field. The training and baseball was great, and the people were even better. Even though I had always heard about what baseball in the DR was like, it was amazing to get to experience it truly first hand. It was no doubt the highlight of my summer.

Head baseball coach Drew Briese saw improvement in his student-athletes during the trip — and not just on the diamond.
From playing in a New York Yankees facility to community service at a children’s home, Centre College’s baseball team had a whirlwind trip to the Dominican Republic to kick off its 2024 season.
The Colonels made the trip to the Caribbean during winter break — the first visit since 2020 for the team — sharing equipment and running a clinic for local youth, among other service activities.
“The purpose and reasoning behind the trip are far removed from baseball,” head coach Drew Briese said. “This is an opportunity for our players to grow, learn and mature — to break down barriers and have an experience where they’ll get out of their comfort zone. And I’ll say, these guys passed with flying colors.”
For Louisville native and Spanish major Will Kempf, the trip gave him the opportunity to utilize his major in a real-world setting.
“The first day, we played at a field that hardly had any fences, there were about 300 kids just standing around (the base lines),” he said. “It was a ton of fun, and that was our first chance to talk to the people there. But you don’t need to know Spanish to play catch, which pretty much happened every day.”
Each day consisted of baseball in the morning and some kind of service work in the afternoon. The first day was a visit to a local orphanage, which served as the perfect chance for student-athletes to get out of their comfort zone.
“One of the greatest gifts you can have as a coach is seeing growth in your players,” Briese said. “That could be personal growth, academic growth, skills as a player — but to see these guys lose their inhibitions and dive in, do a dance party at the orphanage, was unbelievable … I think it gives (our student-athletes) a lot of perspective about the world.”
Learning, leadership and service — three tenants of Centre’s motto — were on display throughout the trip, Kempf said.
“It was a full circle moment, especially for me as a senior,” he said. “You hear about it all the time, it’s easy to think it’s just words. But we went abroad, we did new things, we helped — all of that came together in a natural way. I saw guys talking during team meetings who normally wouldn’t, or getting choked up at something when they’d rather die than show an emotion somewhere on campus.
“And one of the coolest things too, that emotion has carried on since we’ve been back. There aren’t the same opportunities to get out of your comfort zone necessarily, but I can see the way teammates are interacting with each other, going about their day, that parts of the trip have stuck with them.”
Briese said he noticed a change in team chemistry after the trip four years ago — similar to what Kempf sees now. In 2020, the Colonels raced to a 13-3 start to the season, the best in school history, before the COVID pandemic cut the season short.
“We don’t do this for wins and losses, but we certainly feel the team grow closer,” Briese said. “It’s getting closer to teammates who might not be in your class or position group. The hope is, as a coaching staff, that we have long-lasting and transformational growth that will impact the team and these individuals.”
