• $15.00 per cruise night – passenger vehicles and SUV’s
• $30.00 per cruise night – recreational vehicles under 30 feet
• $40.00 per cruise night – recreational vehicles over 30 feet and busses

Upon arrival, guests will be directed to drop off their luggage in the appropriate luggage boxes for screening and handling. Please have your cruise line issued luggage tags completed and attached to your bags. If you do not have tags, please visit the tent marked ‘Cruise Luggage Tags’ upon entrance to the terminal. It Is located on the left as you enter. After dropping off your luggage, you will then be directed to the appropriate secured, long-term parking lot.

• Secured, long-term outdoor parking lot are within walking distance of Cruise Maryland Terminal
• Accepted forms of payment: VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover Card
• Parking fee is payable upon arrival
• No advance reservations required
• Special Needs accessible parking is available on site 

Picking up Returning Passengers

• Cruise terminal gates open at 8:30am for passenger pick-up.
• Passengers will not be permitted to exit the vessel until all federal inspection services are complete and the vessel is cleared by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This process takes approximately two (2) to three (3) hours after the cruise vessel arrives.
• Taxi, Limo and Sedan services should proceed to the passenger building to pick up their passengers in the designated Limo/Shuttle line. Upon exiting the passenger building, passengers will be directed to this area. No shuttle service is required.
• Family and friends picking up passengers will be directed to the ‘Pick Up’ Lot where they will wait.

How to Get to the Baltimore Cruise Port Without a Car (Port Transportation)

Flying into a Baltimore or Washington D.C. airport for your cruise? Or maybe you simply don’t want to deal with the headache and expense of dealing with parking your car? Or perhaps you are taking the train into the area and need to know how to get to the port?

No matter the reason, if you’re needing transportation from anywhere in the area to your cruise ship, then we have you covered.

The good news is that you have a number of options in getting to the port. And depending on your budget, they run from relatively cheap to super stylish (and more expensive).

Below, we take you through all the options on getting to the Baltimore cruise port, so you can find the right mode of transportation for your situation.

Uber/Lyft (Recommended)

As for a mix of cost and convenience, we think rideshare services win hands-down in getting from anywhere in the area to the port. From your phone you can call a ride on demand, no matter where you are.

As well, rates are extremely affordable. When you mix a ride any time you want with a cheap price (remember, up to four people can ride with no increase in charges), we think taking an Uber or Lyft to the ship makes the most sense for most people.

Here are some example estimated rates you would pay for getting to the terminal. Note that that taxi rates include a 15% customary tip. Uber and Lyft make tipping optional.

If you don’t want to use rideshare services like Uber/Lyft, you can always take a cab from the airport or anywhere else around town. Expect the rates to be a little more expensive, but still reasonable and convenient for getting to the port.

We’ve listed the estimated taxi fare from popular areas to the Port of Baltimore in the table above.

Keep in mind that if you are coming directly from an area airport, you shouldn’t have to wait long to catch a taxi. If you are at a hotel or some other location in the area, you’ll want to call a cab in advance to give it time to come reach you before.

Cruise Shuttles

Flying into the Baltimore airport (BWI) to go to the cruise port? In the past, both Royal Caribbean and Carnival offered shuttles from the airport to the cruise port. You can call to the cruise line to see if it’s an option for your cruise.

For a couple of reasons, we usually suggest going with another option than a cruise shuttle transfer, even if available. First, transfers are expensive. 

For example, Carnival recently charged $25.99 per person, each way for their shuttle from BWI to the cruise port. So a family of four would pay $25.99 each ($104) just to get from the airport to the cruise port. Other options like Uber and taxis usually price based on the car, not the number of occupants, making it less expensive.

Second, cruise transfers are extremely limited. They typically run only from the airport to the terminal, and only on the day of sailing. So if you come in early or are staying at a hotel in the area, then the cruise line transfer isn’t a viable option.

If you decide anyway that you would prefer a cruise line transfer, simply contact your cruise company directly to book a reservation.

Independent Shuttles/Car Services

If you are traveling with a larger group or want to ride to your cruise in style, then your best bet is likely to look for an independent shuttle van or private car service. These providers can offer private service to the port, often for less per person than a taxi or other service, assuming you have five or more passengers. They can also give you a ride in an upscale car or even a limousine.

To be frank, the number of shuttles and car services in the area is extremely high. That means we can’t list them all here. Instead, we’ve rounded up a sample list of area companies to give you a good start to go from.

The prices quoted by these companies can vary widely depending on what sort of service you need and exactly where you are coming from. However, as a general rule expect it to be a better value the larger a group you need to transport. Be sure to shop around before selecting a service as it can save you considerable money.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the prices you are quoted won’t include gratuity, which can add on another 15-20% to your fare.

Arriving via Penn Station

If you are headed to Baltimore via train, the odds are likely that you will arrive via Baltimore Penn Station — the primary station in the city. Penn Station is only about four miles from the cruise terminal, or a 15-minute car ride.

We recommend taking either Uber/Lyft or a taxi from the train station to the port, once you arrive. Rides will cost about $15-20. Public transit to the port isn’t convenient given the location and the fact that you’ll be carrying your luggage.

Public Transportation

As mentioned above, we highly recommend taking a car over using public transit to the cruise terminal. The problem is that getting to the terminal typically involves one or more transfers, plus at least a 10-minute walk from the closest bus stop to the cruise terminal. That means what can be a 15-minute car ride turns into a longer commute.

Our suggestion? Just pay a few bucks for a cab or car, and start your trip off that much easier!

Baltimore Cruise Port Terminal Information

Situated in the historic Inner Harbor, Baltimore's cruise terminal offers a picturesque waterfront setting with easy access to the city's attractions, including the National Aquarium, Harborplace, and charming neighborhoods, making it an ideal departure point for your cruise.

Baltimore Bridge Collapse

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 26, a container ship struck one of the support towers of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, collapsing it.

Royal Caribbean operates year-round from the Port of Baltimore. RC’s Vision of the Seas sailed out of Maryland and is currently on a 12-night Southern Caribbean sailing due back on April 4th.

Carnival Legend is due to return to Baltimore on March 31st after a 7-day cruise to the Bahamas.

At this point, with the bridge in the water, access to the port is completely shut off.  The Key bridge is just five miles from the cruise terminal.

The Key bridge carries Interstate 695 over the river. 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge and the bay has five public and 12 private terminals.

More than 40 ships were inside the Baltimore port when the bridge collapsed, including small cargo ships, tug boats and pleasure crafts. Those vessels are currently trapped in the harbor.

At this early date, it is unclear when the Patapsco River will reopen.

Baltimore Cruise Terminal Address & Directions

The South Locust Point Cruise Terminal, also called Cruise Maryland Terminal, is located at 2001 East McComas Street.

From the north, the terminal can be reached via I-95 South through Ft. McHenry Tunnel. Sticking to the right lane, you should take Exit 55 on Key Highway and turn left when you reach the traffic light on the corner of East McComas Street. From there, you will see signs that will direct you to the entrance of the terminal on the right.

Baltimore’s port is quite small so check-in can be quite fast and simple. The cruise terminal parking lot is located right next door, within easy walking distance. There is plenty of staff both outside to collect your luggage and inside to check you in so that you are on the ship in no time.

Baltimore Embarkation Tips:

– Check your cruise line’s current health protocols for the most up-to-date information!

– Have your luggage tags already attached for quick drop off. If forgotten, a small tent with extras is close at hand. You can park after dropping your luggage off.

– Do not arrive at the port earlier than 2 hours after the ship has arrived from the previous cruise. It is suggested you wait until the embarkation time given you by the cruise line in order to maintain short lines (ie Royal Caribbean suggest wait time may be as long as 25 minutes, which is very short in comparison with other terminals).

– Have your cruise ticket and ID close at hand as soon as you enter the terminal. The building is very small and you will be able to get in a check-in line as soon as you enter.

– Passengers with limited mobility – always ask if there is a line for those with disabilities. While the lines may be short, there is a steep winding walkway used while boarding on some ships, which can be tricky to navigate. Cruise line staff are always willing to help.

– Don’t be late! All passengers must arrive at least 90 minutes prior to the ship’s departure time.

Port Baltimore cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore cruise port is a part of Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore. It is located on Patapsco River banks in central Maryland (USA) and is operated by MPA (Maryland Port Administration). As homeport, Baltimore MD's cruise schedule includes roundtrip itineraries the whole year-round. Most popular destinations are Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas, as well as Bermuda (during summer) and New England (during fall). Most of the embarking passengers (up to 90%) arrive at Maryland Cruise Terminal by car. Of those, the largest numbers are residents of Pennsylvania, Washington DC , and NOVA (Northern Virginia).

In October 2016, the cruise port had a record number of ship calls and handled passengers due to homeported here large-sized liners of Carnival and RCI-Royal Caribbean International. The port was also visited by several luxury companies, among which Azamara , Silversea , Hapag-Lloyd . In 2016, the seaport signed a 5-year extension agreement with Carnival Corporation and a 3-year contract with RCCL (Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd).

The largest companies homeporting ships in Baltimore on a year-round basis are Carnival (with Carnival Pride ), RCI Royal Caribbean (with Grandeur OTS /2013-2020, replaced by Enchantment OTS in 2021), and also ACL-American Cruise Lines (small-capacity boats). Most port calls here are on transition itineraries. In 2018, RCI added more summer voyages to Canada New England, while Carnival added 14-day "Carnival Journeys" itineraries (in January and December).

In 2023 (September) turnaround operation from Baltimore started also NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line with two ships -  Norwegian Sky (to New England USA and Canada) and Norwegian Sun (to Bermuda and the Caribbean).

Port Baltimore

Port Baltimore annually contributes nearly USD 3,3 billion (wages and salaries), USD 2,6 billion (business revenues) and USD 395 million (state and local taxes). Port’s average annual direct job salary is 9,5% higher than Maryland's average. In 2018, the port reported a cargo shipping record of 43 million tons handled its state-owned and privately-owned terminals. The previous record (40,9 million tons) was in 1974. FY2018, port's cargo throughput was valued USD 59,7 billion (USD 53,9B in FY2017). Port’s state-owned cargo terminals handled 10,9 million tons. Also in 2018, the port handled 1,023152 million TEU-containers and the record 850,147 mobile units (cars and light trucks).

Port Baltimore is currently ranked USA's largest for Ro-Ro shipping (autos and light trucks, heavy farm, and construction machinery) and for imported sugar. The port is ranked USA's second in exported coal (after Norfolk VA ). The port is also ranked USA's 9th (total cargo value) and 12th (foreign cargo tonnage). Port'ss businesses generate around 13,650 direct jobs, plus around 127,600 Maryland jobs (linked to its activities). The economic impact is nearly USD 3 billion (in wages and salaries) and USD 310 million (tax revenues).

In early-December 2018, Port Baltimore received USD 6,6 million in federal funding for building a second cargo berth with docking capacity two supersized boxships simultaneously. By the project will be deepened (to max draft 15 m / 50 ft) a second berth at Seagirt Marine Terminal. Additionally, the project (total cost USD 32,7 million) will be contributed to USD 7,8 million (by Maryland State) and USD 18,4 million (by Ports America Chesapeake, terminal's operator). Construction works were scheduled to start in 2019-H2 and completed in 2020-H2.

The second container berth project is via a public-private partnership signed in 2010 with Ports America Chesapeake. Dredging works (by US Army Corps of Engineers) started on December 12, 2018, and included 6 harbor channels. This project was budgeted USD 17,5 million and is part of the seaport's regular maintenance of shipping channels that go from Chesapeake Bay (Virginia) all the way to Baltimore. These waterways require periodic dredging (deepening) to ensure their max draft and safe navigation. Baltimore Harbor dredging involves removing material from Curtis Bay, Craighill (Entrance, Channel, Angle, Upper Range) and Cutoff Angle. Port's channels are dredged to max depth 15,5 m (51 ft).

In 2018, the port's largest container ship was Gunde Maersk (IMO 9359014, 11K-TEUs), surpassed in 2019 by Evergreen Triton (IMO 9728916, 15K-TEUs). In 2017, the port handled 596,972 TEUs (containers) Port's state-owned terminals have records for the Fiscal Year 2017-2018 (10,976 million cargo tons) and 1-month TEUs (90152 - in May 2018).

Baltimore cruise terminal

Baltimore cruise terminal was moved in 2006 from Dundakl Port to South Locus Point. BWI Airport is only at 10 min drive distance from the cruise port. Less than 1 hour takes to reach Washington DC and Annapolis MD . Interstate 95 (I-95 highway) is only 0,7 mi (1,2 km) from the seaport.

Maryland Cruise Terminal was redesigned to serve the increasing number of roundtrip itineraries out of Baltimore. The terminal building offers restrooms, payphones, vending machines, ATMs, check-in counters, VIP room, huge parking space (advanced reservations not required).

Terminal building's size is approx 75,700 m2 (815,000 ft2). The length of each of the 2 docking berths is 1139 ft (347 m) with water depth 35 ft (9) m.

In 2016-2017, Port Baltimore made several improvements. Among those were separate VIP check-in room, new public address system (electronic sound amplification-distribution system), new check-in counters, enclosed waiting area (for disembarking passengers), additional parking lot (capacity up to 500 cars).

The cruise ship terminal's convenient location (on I-95) and its large and cheap parking are beneficial for the port's business growth. Also convenient is that the terminal has separate docking areas for Carnival and RCCL ships, plus a third area ready for another major cruise company to homeport a vessel here.

Smaller-sized cruise vessels use for berthing Baltimore's Constellation Pier. Among the companies that dock ships there are American Cruise Lines .

• Fort McHenry: the historic highlight is half-a-mile away from the Baltimore cruise port. The place is famous for the 1982 battle between the American soldiers and the British forces. This inspired the Star-Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key. He was a witness of the battle from an anchored boat.
• Baltimore Museum of Industry: discover the 19th-century history of the commerce and industry in the region of Baltimore.
• Federal Hill: take an amazing look over Inner Harbor from a beautiful green area with a narrow path and high trees.
• American Visionary Art Museum: an interesting place to visit. The American Visionary Art Museum is dedicated to the untrained artist. Baltimore has a new dedicated passenger cruise terminal at South Locust Point. The new Baltimore cruise terminal is located just minutes from the famous Inner Harbor and just off of I-95. It's just a ten minute ride from BWI Airport. Both Annapolis and Washington can be reached by car from the Baltimore cruise port in under an hour.

Cruise passengers will have easy access to the Port of Baltimore South Locust Point Marine Terminal by private car or taxi.

The port is 3 miles from downtown. Taxis are at the terminal. About $5 one way.

Timeline to reopen Port of Baltimore unclear as collapsed Key Bridge cleanup begins

BALTIMORE — A massive salvaging effort is underway to reopen the Port of Baltimore after the deadly collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The Navy has mobilized a 1,000-ton lift capacity derrick barge, a 400-ton lift-capacity revolving crane barge and a 160-ton revolving crane to help lift debris from the water, a huge undertaking in the works.

Officials say the section of the bridge trapping the cargo ship dolly weighs between 3,000 and 4,000 tons, so before the Army Corps of Engineers can start moving anything off the water, they're going to have to cut the debris into smaller pieces. 

On Saturday evening, officials said demolition crews began cutting portions the collapsed bridge.

"Highly trained demolition crews are cutting the top portion of the north side of the collapsed bridge truss," officials said in an update. "Two crane barges, a 650-ton crane and a 330-ton crane are actively working on scene. The removed wreckage is scheduled to be lifted and transferred to a barge this evening as daylight allows. A 230-ton land-based crane will offload and process the wreckage at Tradepoint Atlantic and will then be taken to a disposal site."

Photos released by officials showed teams in protective gear using an "exothermic cutting torch" on sections of the steel bridge. 

When will the Port of Baltimore reopen? 

All vessel traffic in and out of the port was suspended in the wake of the collapse, but it has remained open for trucks. It isn't clear yet how long it will take to clear the 700-foot span of the channel of thousands of tons of debris. 

The Baltimore district of the corps activated its Emergency Operations Center, which clears the way for more than 1,100 engineering, construction, contracting and operations specialists to provide support to local, state and federal agencies.

CBS News correspondent Kris Van Cleave reports everything needs to be cleared from the bottom of the channel — 50 feet below the surface — because there is only 12 to 18 inches of clearance between the bottom of the channel and the hull of a cargo ship loaded down with containers. 

"There is a lot of speculation as to when the channel will be reopened," the Port said in a statement Friday. "The fact of the matter is we do not know. Please understand that we are working minute-by-minute with our federal, state and local partners to make that happen as quickly as possible."   

The port is the  ninth-busiest  in the United States, according to Census data, and handled more than $80 billion in import and exports last year, the most in 20 years. It is also home to Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian  cruise lines .

Directly, the port supports 15,300 jobs, while another 140,000 in the area are related to port activities. The jobs provide a combined $3.3 billion in personal income, according to a CBS News  report . 

"The most urgent priority is to open the Port of Baltimore because it is essential to the livelihood of people here in Baltimore, in Maryland, and the economies across our country and around the world," U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen said in a news conference Wednesday.

Maryland lawmakers are drafting emergency legislation for  income replacement  to assist thousands of Port of Baltimore workers impacted by the disruption. 

Four remain missing, presumed dead

Eight people , part of a construction crew filling potholes, were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Two were rescued, two bodies have been recovered, and four remain missing. 

So far, four of the victims  have been identified :

• Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 35, originally from Honduras
• Miguel Luna, originally from El Salvador
• Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, 26, originally from Guatemala 
• Jose Mynor Lopez ,  35, originally from Guatemala  

The bodies of Cabrera and Fuente were recovered from a submerged pickup truck. The search for bodies was paused Wednesday because divers can no longer operate around the mangled bridge debris that has encased submerged vehicles, officials said.

Federal support incoming 

Maryland is receiving an initial $60 million in emergency funding from the federal government as the state works to clear the debris. The state sent  a letter of request  for relief to pay for mobilization, operations and debris recovery.

President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he intends to push the  federal government to pay  for the entire reconstruction of the bridge, and pledged to work with Maryland leaders to provide as much support as possible.  

"It is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort," Biden said earlier, adding that he plans to visit Baltimore as soon as he can.

The $60 million estimate made by the state of Maryland for initial expenses is, at most, just 10% of the estimated cost for response to the disaster, CBS News learned following a Maryland Congressional delegation meeting.

The Maryland delegation talked about likely costs exceeding $1 billion and a "need for an emergency supplemental" aid package from Congress.

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement Tuesday that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

On Thursday, the cruise company said the current sailing would end in Norfolk.

“Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements,” Royal Caribbean said.

Upcoming cruises on April 4 and 12 will sail from Norfolk as well, and passengers will be compensated for the change. The ship was already scheduled for maintenance in the Bahamas after the April 12 cruise.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland. 

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April. 

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel. 

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

Royal Caribbean is the latest cruise line to change course due to the closure of the Port of Baltimore.

The port’s Cruise Maryland Terminal is inaccessible because it’s blocked by the remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed into the Patapsco River after being rammed into by a massive container ship early Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson Royal Caribbean said Thursday that a ship that departed from Baltimore on March 23 and was scheduled to return April 4 will now conclude its journey in Norfolk, Virginia, instead.

Carnival Cruise announced a similar reroute Tuesday. In both cases, the companies have offered passengers free buses back to Baltimore.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association, Baltimore is the nation’s 29th busiest port for cruise ships, moving about 378,000 passengers annually. Twelve ships were scheduled to dock at the port 115 times during 2024, the association said.

Baltimore’s cruise terminal is home to four cruise lines: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and American Cruises.

Baltimore Opens Temporary Shipping Route Around Key Bridge Wreckage

The temporary alternate channel will be able to accommodate some barges and tugboats but not larger vessels, the authorities said.

Officials in Baltimore opened a temporary channel on Monday to help restore some traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore, one of the nation’s busiest commercial shipping hubs .

The alternate channel will allow some essential vessels to bypass wreckage from the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge, which has been blocking the harbor’s main channel since it was hit by a giant cargo ship last week .

The temporary channel was announced late Sunday by the state and federal agencies leading the disaster response and confirmed in a news conference on Monday afternoon.

“Today was an important milestone in the process of beginning to pull the wreckage out, beginning to open up channels,” Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland said. “We know we still have more work to do.”

Some barges and tugboats that had been trapped in the harbor will pass through the channel on Monday evening, Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath of the U.S. Coast Guard said. Still, at a depth of 11 feet, the new lane can accommodate only a fraction of the traffic that typically passes through the port.

The authorities are surveying a second alternative channel on the other side of the bridge, Admiral Gilreath said, which would have a depth of “around 15 to 16 feet,” allowing somewhat larger vessels.

Officials said that the opening of a third alternate channel, with a depth of 20 to 25 feet, was dependent on the daunting work being done at the moment: the clearing of heavy bridge debris.

“Once that’s opened, that should allow us to move almost all of our tug and barge traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore,” Admiral Gilreath said. “I don’t have a timeline other than we’re going to do it as fast as we possibly can,” he added, explaining that clearing that third channel involved cutting through and lifting heavy steel girders.

Salvage experts have said that clearing debris around the wrecked structure in the Patapsco River is likely to take weeks. It’s unclear how much longer it will take for shipping to reach normal levels.
