Can Maher Make History? Your Guide to the 2022 Longines Global Champions Tour of New York

The Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) of New York makes its long-awaited return this weekend on Governor’s Island.

This event, put simply, is unique. There aren’t many top show jumping venues that require boarding a ferry to reach the stables. While an outdoor event, the arena is on the smaller side (The indoor arena at the National Horse Show in Lexington, KY is just five meters narrower). And there is absolutely no lacking of atmosphere (Oh hey there, Statue of Liberty).

global champion tour new york

The feature event—the CSI5* LGCT Grand Prix of New York—is not run like a typical Grand Prix, either, and riders will certainly be feeling the pressure of the class, as this event is the penultimate leg of the 2022 LGCT series, which rewards a purse of €750,000 for its top performing athletes.

Ahead of a most impactful week, we’re breaking down the ins and outs of the LGCT Grand Prix:

Many Grand Prix events are formatted as jump-off competitions. However, the LGCT Grand Prix is a competition of two full rounds.

In fact, the first round of the class is held in conjunction with the series’ Global Champions League team competition, held as a Table A Speed competition on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 12:30pm ET.

The top 35 athletes from this competition advance to the Grand Prix, where they receive a clean slate and begin again on a zero-fault score. This second round is formatted like a more traditional jump-off class, except the start order is determined by the results of the qualifier.

Any riders that finish on equal-leading faults of this class then advance to a jump-off to determine the winner.

A game of points

There’s more on the line here, as the LGCT Grand Prix awards points to its top-performing athletes, which determine the year-end bonuses (The winner of the Grand Prix also receives an automatic berth into the LGCT Super Grand Prix in November in Prague). Currently, Christian Ahlmann (GER) leads the standings with 238 points, but Ben Maher (GBR, 232 points), Pieter Devos (BEL, 221) and Darragh Kenny (IRL, 198) are all hot on his heels.

Here’s how it works:

1st — 40 points

2nd — 37 points

3rd — 35 points

4th — 33 points

5th — 32 points

6th — 31 points

36th — 1 point

Ahlmann will not be in New York, meaning the lead is more than up for grabs. What do the riders behind him need to do to take over the series lead?

Maher could become the first rider in LGCT history to claim the series title on three separate occasions, having prevailed in both 2018 and 2019 thanks to his incredible Olympic gold medal-winning partner, Explosion W. Only one rider boasts more LGCT career prize money than Maher, and that’s Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS), who like Maher has also claimed the series tittle on two occasions (2011-2012).

Maher needs to finish 23rd or better in the Grand Prix to overtake the lead before the series finale in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (Maher is only 8 points behind Ahlmann, but only one’s best eight results from the season count toward the series standings).

If Maher was to win in New York, he would have 259 points, putting the pressure on Ahlmann for a top 10 finish in Riyadh.

Maher also happens the be the defending Champion of this event, having won the LGCT Grand Prix of New York in 2019, the last time it was held. That year, he averaged 3.6 faults and a finish position within the top 18 in LGCT competitions. While off his remarkable 2018 numbers (2.4 faults and a top 12 finish), his 2022 stats are almost identical to what he put up in 2020. In 2022 LGCT competition, Maher is averaging 4.2 faults and a finish position within the top 18. History might just repeat itself.

After Explosion suffered a minor injury before the World Championships, Faltic HB has stepped up to be a top horse in his own right, recently finishing second in the LGCT Grand Prix of Rome. Faltic HB is averaging just 2.3 faults in LGCT competition this year, along with a finish position within the top 12.

Let’s talk about how unbelievably balanced this horse is: He has an equal percentage of faults off the left and right leads. Wow!

Pieter Devos

Devos took the LGCT Grand Prix win in London this season and is currently averaging just 3.4 faults in LGCT competition this year.

Mom’s Toupie de la Roque has made the most LGCT starts of Devos’ horses this year (15), and the 15-year-old mare is also putting up the best averages. She is averaging 1.6 faults in LGCT competition in 2022; her average finish position is 17.

This mare has a noticeable weakness: Her rails almost always come behind (90% of faults in 2022, according to Prixview Next Gen data). This pair will need to deftly handle combinations 40% faults) off the right lead (60% faults) to put themselves in contention for a top accolade.

global champion tour new york

Darragh Kenny

With 198 points, Kenny sits well behind Maher, Devos and Ahlmann in the standings, and it would take a win plus Devos and Maher to not qualify for the Grand Prix in order to be in contention for the title. Still, he’s had a consistent year on the tour and has ridden VDL Cartello in his last two LGCT Grand Prix outings.

The eye-catching grey stallion is averaging 3 faults in LGCT competition this year. Cartello’s area of greatest weakness this year has been jumping into combinations. He has faults at 31.13% of the combinations he’s faced in 2022. More than 54% of the time, the faults have come at the “A” element.

Kenny should look to break into the top three in the standings should he be able to secure a top finish in New York. The difference between third and fourth in the overall standings is nearly €38,000.

I think that it’s going to be the one that all the top riders really want to aim for.” Another top American rider who will compete next weekend is Margie Goldstein-Engle : “It’s very exciting for us, being from America, to have another Global Tour show here. Star Strikers Revealed for Final GCL Face Off in New York

High stakes, enormous pressure, and big expectations… the GCL team competition is set to reach fever pitch as the battle for supremacy rockets to its conclusion in New York. Throughout the year the GCL team competition has seen more drama, tactics, and excitement than ever before, with all 16 teams experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions this season. Currently leading are the St. Tropez Pirates with a score of 304 points, closely followed by the Shanghai Swans on 302 so far. Just six points behind at 296 are the former leaders and 2018 Champions London Knights, while Madrid in Motion are a further six points away with 290 overall. As well as the Championship title, teams are fighting for a place in the GC Prague Playoffs GCL Super Cup, with the top four ranked teams fast-tracking to the semi-finals - a huge advantage in the fight for the 3 million euro prize pot and chance to etch their names into the history books. This season the London Knights have taken the most wins, with four first places to their name - Madrid, Stockholm, Cascais/Estoril, and London. While the St. Tropez Pirates have only secured one win this year (Hamburg), their consistently high placings have meant they now lead the Championship race by just two points. The Shanghai Swans started the season off strongly with two back-to-back wins in Doha and Mexico City, however the team will be looking for a resurgence of form at the final event, with the hope of just stealing back the overall lead. Quietly chipping away are Madrid in Motion, the team securing two wins so far this season - both by father and son duo Eric and Maikel van der Vleuten - in Cannes and most recently Ramatuelle/Saint-Tropez. While that dream combination won’t be together next week, the team has selected three formidable riders from their squad and will be hoping to keep the momentum of their recent form to secure their third win of the season. And all eyes will be on the home city team New York Empire, led by team owner and rider Georgina Bloomberg who was born and raised in the city. After a spectacular win in Valkenswaard earlier this season, the black, white, and red team will be looking for plenty of local support as they seek to take a podium on home turf. With tactics and strategy at the forefront of each team manager’s mind, we can exclusively reveal the team selection for the final season fight in New York. Top Four Teams Rider Selection St. Tropez Pirates Pieter Devos Edwina Tops-Alexander Dani G. Waldman Shanghai Swans Daniel Deusser Peder Fredricson Shane Sweetnam London Knights Martin Fuchs Ben Maher Olivier Philippaerts Madrid in Motion Eduardo Alvarez Aznar Michael G Duffy Maikel van der Vleuten With a win worth 30 points, and every point counting in the final season score, there has never been more pressure on the team riders. The first round of action will kick off on Friday, September 27, at 3:45 p.m. local time. All scores carry through to Saturday, September 28, where the conclusion of the 2019 GCL season will take place at 12:45 p.m. local time. An Unmissable LGCT Showdown in New York

The Longines Global Champions Tour Finals in New York are set to be an unmissable showdown with only one point separating the season's top two riders, Pieter Devos (BEL) and Ben Maher (GBR) , in the Championship.

The fight for the LGCT crown is on a knife edge in one of the closest duels in the history of the LGCT. In a dramatic shake-up last weekend, Devos took over the ranking lead after finishing second in the LGCT Grand Prix of Ramatuelle/Saint-Tropez, putting him on 278 points, just one point ahead of Maher on 277.

Both riders have been volleying for the lead, leapfrogging each other to take over the top spot in the ranking at different points throughout the season. However, with only nine scores counting in each rider’s tally, Maher is in a slightly stronger position heading into the Finals in New York despite being second currently in the ranking. Here is how the scoring could work out... • If Maher secures fifth position or higher, he will secure back-to-back title wins. • If Devos achieves fifth or higher, then Maher must finish in 14th or higher or the title will go to the Belgian rider. And statistically, if both riders qualify for the LGCT Grand Prix of New York, judged on previous performances we can see that Devos has scored consistently higher at more events in the competition, whereas Maher has two LGCT Grand Prix wins to his name.

Daniel Deusser (GER) is sitting third in the ranking on 259 points and there is still an outside chance if he finishes first or secnd, with Maher and Devos not qualifying for the LGCT Grand Prix. If that scenario happens, there is a chance the German could be crowned Champion. At the previous legs, Maher and Devos both strongly hinted that they would bring their top horses Explosion W and Claire Z to New York, so the stage is set for an epic sporting showdown. 'Exposing New People To Our Sport Is The Goal' Georgina Bloomberg On Longines Global Champions Tour Finals

September 26, 2019 / 1:59 PM EDT / CBS New York

New York, NY (CBS New York)- New York is home to a wide variety of different events throughout the course of each year, and it has often been the epicenter of attention for many industries and sports.

This weekend, the city will experience a rare first, when the Longines Global Champions Tour holds its first-ever event on Governor's Island. The three-day event begins on Friday, September 27th and runs through Sunday, September 29th and will feature some of the best equestrians on the planet. It's not often that the city gets to say it is doing something for the first time, but that is the case here.

"It's the first time we have had a horse show here in New York. We have had polo matches before, but it's the first show jumping event and it's the inaugural New York Global Champions Tour event, so it's really exciting," said world-class show jumper Georgina Bloomberg in an interview with CBS Local's DJ Sixsmith. "Some of the best riders in the world are coming to compete for top prize money."

Bloomberg, the younger daughter of former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, is a lifelong resident of the city and ecstatic that the Global Champions Tour is coming to her hometown. Particularly at Governor's Island, a place that she says feels like one of the unknown great places in the city. For Bloomberg, the love of riding horses came early, but the love for competition took over soon after that.

"Started riding when I was four, competing when I was six, and I fell in love with the competition right away. I think every rider really starts with their love of ponies and horses, and love of animals is really a must. But, I really was drawn to the competition. I love working hard at something and sort of being in the spotlight and showing that off."

Bloomberg then turned professional at the age of 21 and has been competing ever since. Show jumping is a sport that is a little under-the-radar in the United States, and many people may understand just how taxing of a sport it is.

"You're an athlete and you are on top of another athlete. You're factoring an animal in. The animal can have a bad day, or you can have a bad day," said Bloomberg. "It's very different than track or gymnastics, where it's just about you and your performance. Where, if you're healthy and performing well, you're going to go in and win. With us, there's a lot of luck. Your horse could be in a bad mood, your horse could have an injury. It's a very different sport, in that there are two athletes that you need to rely on. It's a challenging sport, obviously it's a bit dangerous, but it's something that I have always loved. It's physically a bit grueling, and mentally it can be a bit tiring, because you're traveling a lot, but I have always loved it."

That challenging nature is what has made the sport popular around the world with fans following particularly closely in Europe. Bloomberg says that by bringing an event to New York, the hope is that some fans in the United States will hop on the bandwagon.

"That is one of the things that we are super-excited about to have this show in New York. Hopefully, we'll bring in some new crowds and some new fans that might have never been to a horse show and might leave wanting to pursue following it. Or maybe a kid comes and wants to start riding. Exposing people to our sport is something that this show is really going to do."

One more reason for New Yorkers to stop by? This event is the Tour's Finals, meaning that those in attendance will see this season's champions crowned. The event begins Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time. The Global Champions Tour is offering free admission to the event available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

New York Empire Team Announces Lineup for 2023 Global Champions League Season

New York Empire team owner Georgina Bloomberg of New York, New York, announced the team of six riders ready to take on the 2023 Global Champions League (GCL) season during the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT). Returning to the roster with Bloomberg will be Scott Brash (GBR), Denis Lynch (IRL), Spencer Smith (USA), and Jodie Hall McAteer (GBR). The five 2022 New York Empire riders will be joined by newcomer to the team Frank Schuttert (NED) for 2023.

New York Empire powered by Lugano Diamonds finished 13th during the 2022 season and qualified for the GCL Playoffs in Prague, Czech Republic. The team had several successful placings including a podium finish in London.

“We are thrilled to welcome Frank to our lineup of accomplished riders for the 2023 season,” said Bloomberg, who debuted the New York Empire team in 2018. “His talent as a rider combined with his superb string of horses will be a great addition to our team. Additionally, I am looking forward to competing alongside Scott, Denis, Spencer, and Jodie again this year. New York Empire had a competitive season in 2022, and I think 2023 will be exciting.”

Schuttert, a member of the 2021 Scandinavian Vikings GCL team, has been a top competitor in the sport since he was a young rider. In 2013, he won the gold medal in the FEI European Young Riders Individual Jumping Championship at Vejer de la Frontera, Spain. In 2018, Schuttert won the LGCT Valkenswaard Grand Prix, which earned him a spot in the LGCT Super Grand Prix during the Global Champions Playoffs in Prague, Czech Republic, where he claimed a third-place finish. The 29-year-old show jumping athlete represented the Netherlands at the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina, as well as at the 2019 European Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and again in 2021 in Riesenbeck, Germany. After working for Belgian Olympic athlete Jos Lansink for nine years, Schuttert began developing horses on his own in late 2021.

“I have been building a good team of horses for myself since I started my own business,” commented Schuttert. “I am looking forward to being back on a Global Champions League team and competing at the highest levels of the sport alongside my amazing New York Empire team members.”

The Global Champions League and Longines Global Champions Tour travels around the world visiting many of the most iconic cities, including London, Madrid, New York, Paris, Rome, and Stockholm.

Global Citizen announced Monday (April 1) that its annual festival will return to Central Park in 2024, with the nonprofit planning to unveil this year’s lineup in the coming months.

What Would A Truly Green Music Festival Look Like?

Trending on billboard.

At press time, Central Park’s website displays a banner reading, “The Great Lawn is currently closed … the Conservancy is seeding, aerating, and sodding portions of the lawn to repair significant damage.”

This year’s Global Citizen Festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28. More details, including lineup billings, will be announced later this year. As in years past, attendance will be free, but entry must be earned by “taking action towards ending extreme poverty.”

Last year’s festival saw Jung Kook, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Anitta, Megan Thee Stallion and more headliners taking a stage made entirely out of repurposed and recycled materials. The 2023 iteration also featured an all-vegetarian menu served with fully compostable packaging and utensils and more eco-friendly initiatives .

“Since 2012, the Global Citizen Festival has called Central Park its home, thanks to the long-standing partnership with NYC Parks and the City of New York,” said Hugh Evans, Global Citizen co-founder and CEO, in a statement. “Annually, we have welcomed 60,000 global citizens to the Great Lawn, who have played a crucial role in our mission, and we look forward to coming back again on September 28 to drive more action and commitments towards ending extreme poverty.”

“As New Yorkers we are all citizens of the globe. And few moments are as exhilarating and rewarding as the end of UNGA Week each September when our partners at Global Citizen come to Central Park and welcome New Yorkers from all five boroughs to an event that raises much needed resources for those struggling for basic necessities around the world,” said New York City councilmember Erik Bottcher. “I’m excited that with Global Citizen’s support, the Parks Department and the Central Park Conservancy will open a restored Great Lawn this week so that an NYC gem is ready for spring – and a season’s worth of inclusive cultural, philanthropic and recreational events that help make New York the great city that it is.”
