How many miles from Galveston to Jamaica?
By Luv2cruise14 , March 18, 2006 in Carnival Cruise Lines

I was just looking at a map that listed all the ports of call in the Gulf and I was surprised how far Galveston is from Jamaica. Does anyone have any idea mile wise how far it is. It must be a good distance considering it takes 2 1/2 days to get there. Just curious :)

Try Google Earth, you will love it. go to yahoo and do a search for it.
I checked the website out, but no luck.
How do you want to calculate the mileage? By straight line (going through Cuba) or by going around Cuba? I'll check back for your answer and then compute it for you.
You are so Kind :) Thank you!
It doesn't matter....I was just curious how many miles it was. It looks like a lot of miles.
Thanks again
Going around Cuba on the route the Conquest goes...
This is a rough estimate, but should be pretty close.
Thank you :)
I know it was probably a dumb question.....but I was curious.
BTW...cute dog I have a black mini schnauzer....I had a S/P one but lost her 2 wks ago today due to an illness.:(
Thanks again!!!

Try Google Earth, you will love it. go to yahoo and do a search for it. Fred
Sorry, but I love this advice. How about going to Google and searching for Yahoo Earth?:D:rolleyes:
I just got off the Conquest in February and the total NAUTICAL (6000' vs 5280') Miles traveled was real close to 2500. Galveston to Montego Bay is right at 1000 N Miles.
Sorry, but I love this advice. How about going to Google and searching for Yahoo Earth?:D:rolleyes: rns
I have always used Yahoo search engine from day one, and thats been 14 years now, I have seen search engines come and go... Im still happy with Yahoo and keep them as my home page. So its a habit when I tell someone to do a search, I always say yahoo it.
Whew, I am glad everyone is just trying to calculate distance. When I saw the title of the thread, I thought someone was planning on swimming there! :D
WorldCruzer
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING! :D :D :D
Are you planning to drive? I don't think you can get there from here! :)
It is about 1400 miles from Galveston to Ocho Rios if you go through (or over) downtown Havana. It is about 1420 miles if you go around Cuba. However, Jabee's estimate is fairly close, if you go to Montego Bay. In knots:
1350 miles is about 1174 knots.
1400 miles is about 1217 knots.
1420 miles is about 1235 knots.
Now, all that said and done, it is only about 9.5 inches on the map that I used.
Divide the knots by 21 and you will come fairly close to the time, in hours, it will take the ship to get there. The ship cruises a little over 21 knots, but leaving and entering the harbor it has to go slower.
electricron
The Conquest sailed as fast as 21+ knots a few weeks ago.
It left Galveston around 5 pm Sunday, and arrived in Montego Bay around 7 am Wednesday more than two days later. That with one hour lost due to changing time zones. Therefore, the elapse time was around 61 hours.
7+24+24+7-1=
Assuming the miles posted above are close to being accurate, here's the average speed the Conquest must go:
1420 miles / 61 hours = 23.25 miles per hour.
1235 knots / 61 hours = 20.25 miles per hour
Since I was on Conquset last October, I knew the route it takes.
I simply drew in the route using a measuring tool and did it twice, coming up between 1370-1400 miles each time. It is crude, and not exact, but a pretty good appoximation.
You will love your trip on the Conquest, and Montego Bay presents some unique shore excursions.
Have fun!!!
jw4jg1mg2eg1
sorry, I goofed up sending that one..:o
And I'm just gonna sit back, relax & leave the steering to them....& enjoy every single inch of those miles!
Well then, it is about 88,704,000 inches (give or take - sort of depends on which end of the dock they tie up to). :)
This doesn't really answer your question and these are kinda crude. They are still caps from a video camera source.

Port of Galveston Makes Traffic Improvements to Manage Growth
- March 14, 2024
The Port of Galveston announced several projects to improve traffic flow in and around its cruise terminals, according to a press release.
“We’re taking best practices from Cruise Terminal 10, which opened in November 2022, and incorporating them at terminals 25 and 28,” said Galveston Wharves Port Director and CEO Rodger Rees.
“We’ll do the same as we plan the Cruise Terminal 16 complex set to open in late 2025.”
To help address the issue of onsite parking and reduce traffic on Harborside, the port is expanding its park-and-walk Express Lot adjacent to terminals 25 and 28. This will enable passengers to park and walk to their terminal instead of making two trips on Harborside if they’re dropping off luggage before they park and taking a shuttle bus to the terminal.
Additionally, terminal 16 will have a cruise parking garage and surface parking, both onsite.
“At terminals 25 and 28, we’re pulling up old rail lines and a fence to add traffic lanes on the south side of the terminal complex. We’ll also be trying a new traffic flow pattern to provide more queuing space for CT 25 and to move traffic more efficiently through the complex,” said Rees.
The port is also working with the cruise lines that these trucking companies that deliver food, beverages and other supplies to find ways to better manage this traffic.
Improvements at Cruise Terminal 16 will include a traffic impact analysis to determine how additional vehicles could impact traffic flow in and around the terminal. In addition to onsite parking and queuing lanes, cruise-related traffic will be able to use the port’s new internal roadway to the west of the terminal, Rees explained.
