Volant air intake systems utilize a high-velocity venturi filter adapter which provides a smooth transition through the MAF sensor into the intake tube for a much needed airflow improvement over the factory rubber tubing and resonator box. Volant's Cool Air box is larger than the factory unit and incorporates a larger opening to collect a higher volume of colder ambient air.

I like the overall construction of the box. Very well constructed. However, I am not at all happy with the lid. It does not sit flush, it is 'bowed' up in the middle. Not sure why because it is not being prevented from laying flush. Secondly the cover is not clear like the Volant intake box I had in my 2500 nor like the box you advertise on the web. I like the throttle response. I'm still reviewing my mpg at this time.

O2 7.3 Exhaust/Cold air intake Upgrade

CamoGirl

  • Add to quote

Hey guys- Just doing a bit of research and looking for a bit of input- I am wanting to do a few inexpensive upgrades to my diesel that will give me a bit more power and increase fuel efficiency(hopefully) - from what I have read most 7.3 owners suggest starting with a cold air intake system...and the system that is talked about a lot for my 02 F350 7.3 with 109,000 miles is the S&B Filters 75-5062 Cold Air Intake for 1998-2003 Ford Powerstroke 7.3L - and the 4 inch 4MBRP S6200P Turbo Back Single Side Exhaust System upgrade listed on Amazon Both of these can be purchased on Amazon at fairly reasonable prices and from what I understand can really help to lower EGT's as well as increase power and fuel efficiency. Has anyone used these products on their diesel?? What has been your experience?? Also, I had a loss of boost under a load and discovered that I had a crack on my intercooler boot on the hot side- I live in southern Az where the heat can be unbearable- had it replaced with a new OEM part from ford but was wondering if there is a better quality boot kit that I can get so I can replace my other boots before they fail as they are original....I saw boot kits from Sinister and Riff Raff but wasn't sure if I should take a chance....any input?? Thanks so much

frozenpepper70

I noticed gains when I upgraded my own exhaust, although I can't say much about the cold air intake. There is another intake that NAPA sells which many people run. I think it's the 6637. Better filtration over stock, but lacks the box that most cold air intakes feature (to isolate engine bay temps). I'd stick with the OE boots personally.

Thanks so much for your input!

DesertDiesel

Although the s&B looks pretty under the hood, the Riffraff Donaldson blue 6637 is an inexpensive and effective CAI. Get it with the prefilter sock from Riffraff also. Under-the-temps don't effect the intake temp much at all and won't increase EGT's. I live in phoenix and run it and a 5" straight pipe. I love my setup. Also, if you don't have one already, get the PHP hydra. It will also help fuel mileage. I have lifted truck with 37'' MT's and run my hydra on 140 extreme tune daily driving and see 15 MPG's consistently.

A free flowing exhaust is a good thing to do to any Turbo engine, the cold air thing, not as important. Read about here -> https://www.powerstroke.org/forum/99-03-7-3l-performance-parts/1366663-under-hood-temps.html That being said,,, years ago I did the Ford AIS filter with both a "fender sleeve" and the "ZooDad Mod" to the radiator support to funnel cold air to it. The 7.3 is a pretty de-tuned system in stock form. The biggest bang for the buck you'll see is with some simple tuning. Don't waste time or money on trying to make it more efficient. It's old tech and you're never going to make serious improvements on fuel mileage. You won't recoup the expenses in savings.

I have both an S&B intake and 4" MBRP. They do exactly as described, suck in air and blow it out. With the S&B there is two filter options, oiled and dry. With the oiled filter you can reuse it multiple times by cleaning it and re-oiling it (red filter). If that doesn't interest you, like myself, they make a dry filter (white filter) that is one time use and keep switching it out like a typical filter. If you go with the dry filter I highly recommend getting their filter sock with it as it keeps a lot of dirt out of the filter. There is other options out there that will do the same thing for less, aFe, 6637, etc but I like the cosmetic function of it too, if that matters to you. The S6200p is their aluminium with muffler. You live in Arizona so salt isn't an issue and it will most likely last a long time if you keep it in Arizona, it will start to rust out immediately if gone through a winter with salt. They also make a T409 steel option which is what the factory exhaust is made of but will brown like the factory exhaust if in contact with salt. The T304 is what I have and its for environments that see nonstop salt but will always stay shiny. Regardless of what options you choose there will be a noticeable sound difference, you'll hear more air being sucked in when building boost and the truck will sound a lot louder from outside the cab or with the windows open. Most MBRP kits come with a muffler, if you do want more sound MBRP makes a matching muffler delete pipe. On a stock truck you won't really notice too much of a difference with these mods. It's all about tuning but you need these mods as the absolute basics to do tuning. For intercooler boots I went with these https://www.ebay.com/itm/7-3L-Late-1999-2003-Performance-Ford-Powerstroke-Intercooler-Boost-Boot-Kit-7-3/272421817897?hash=item3f6d9b0e29:g:5d4AAOSwv0tU58AC:sc:USPSPriority!10308!US!-1 because they match my engine parts and colors. But BD Diesel, Mishimoto, RiffRaff, are all good options, just depends what color and whose sticker you want.

I've got both of what you are looking for in stock also. www.cncfab.us

doubleslottedflaps

do the exhaust first. I have the MBRP 4" turbo back and no cat and no muffler. I have the AFE intake with the oiled filter. Have about 50,000 miles on them.

PSD POWER007

Pick the exhaust of your choice. They all do the same job. Material it’s made of, muffler, and tip are all matter of choice in how much you wanna spend. Intake wise. Get the Donaldson Blue filter from RiffRaff and a 4” long 4” ID pipe. You can make your intake for $50. Another free mod, is to adjust your wastegate rod on your turbo. From the factory there usually isn’t enough preload on the WG spring. The wastegate blows open under load and bleeds boost pressure off. When I had my stock turbo, my peak boost went from 17 psi to 24 psi. On stock injectors, you won’t have enough fuel to over spin the turbo. So tighten the rod all the way down. Just food for though

00t444e

The stock airbox on a 7.3 is undersized, a air intake system with a larger filter is a good idea. The 6637 is a cheap option I have had mine for years and it works fine, the S&B kit is a good option if you want something more fancy.

zsargent

I don't have a 7.3 but my best friend does. If it was my truck: 1. do the 6637 2. get a 4 inch aluminized exhaust. MBRP is a good choice 3. get some tuning (PHP hydra). you will be amazed at how it wakes up your rig. 4. call or PM Corey at cncfab (see previous post). He'll hook you up. Great service! AND whatever you do, DON'T get anything from Sinister diesel !! (or Thoroughbred Diesel)

zsargent said: AND whatever you do, DON'T get anything from Sinister diesel !! (or Thoroughbred Diesel) Click to expand...

Thoroughbred took me for a $9000 ride a few years back. Bogus set of injectors that I bought from them. They failed almost immediately. Had a shop replace them with Motorcraft ones and I got stuck with the bill. Wouldn't reimburse me or nothing. Best they would do was to send me a new set of o rings and crush washers ($8 a pack from Alliant). Their GM basically told me to F off. Since they don't have a registered agent in AK I got screwed for trying to sue them. Turns out the injectors had a recall on them for bad snap rings. They knew about it (GM admitted it), still sold me the injectors and then told me to keep them. Thoroughbred told me they sold me the injectors as New ones but they were Alliant remans. The $9K included their sticks and the original labor to have them put in, then the sticks failed one at a time, truck had to be towed a few times. after the third failed injector I had the shop replace the rest of them. Needless to say I got schooled fast (was my first diesel). I do all my work now unless it involves a transmission. After that fiasco they changed a few things on their website.... Banks on the other hand has always treated me good (and my son too). Never dealt with ATS. I stick with the vendors on the org here from now on.

That's why I try to buy as much as possible from Amazon. Most of the time you're still supporting the vendors we all know and love but you have the backing of Amazon to provide free return shipping and instant refunds.

I have an 01 F250 with 4" turbo back. I have a k&n intake on now but I would like to change it. I would like some advice in which one to go with. Any advice would help.

jbrixen

6637 is the most popular

awireman

:whs: My truck came with a K&N also. After very little research I realized I needed to change it. It's very easy to do the 6637 switch. Also recommend the zoodad. Cheapie mods can add up quick.

PSD POWER007

I love my AIS. I ran a Banks Ram air that worked nicely for about 75k miles. It's in perfect shape and I'm looking to sell at a good price if interested. PM me.

tbolt

AIS best filtering

I did the 6637 mod from riff raff for like 80 bucks. It comes with the new filter, prefilter cover, adapter tube and clamp. Good deal imo since the local NAPA tried to charge me 60 bucks for the filter alone.

Nordicsun

Where did you buy the 6637 air filter?

I have tried a couple different ones and i like the S&B the best.

Chris99powerstroke

Get an AFE stage 2

Why waste 400 bones when a 6637 will do the same thing for 40?

Best a Tymar intake, or do a correctly built clone but it will cost much more than $40

mtray

definitely go with the 6637 intake have one on my truck. like bruce51d said $40 . . . . to me you cant beat that for a filter that does better than the $200+ ones. . .

What is the 6637 mod

wix part #46637. I used a 6" piece of 4" exhaust pipe, removed the stock airbox, let the small sensor jus hang, the flow sensor put into the intake hose. Stick the pipe in the filter and clamp it, put the pipe in the intake and clamp it. Done. Filter sits right on the fender. I get my filters online for about $40 with shipping. Sent from AutoGuide.com App

When it comes to the filter use the Donaldson 085046 high humidity filter. I've had the same one for a few years now and its still holding strong. This one is in the $60-$80 range depending on where you get it but is well worth the dough.

PSDfamilyTradition7.3

By far afe stage 2 pro gaurd 7. Dont have to worry about dusting the motor. no water or snow getting to the filter. Did the 6637 mod didnt personally like the results for the conditions i go through. can get it real cheap through XDP.

if you hadn't blown all that money on that intake maybe you could afford decent tunes

If a DYI is made correctly using a filter mount no need for 085046 a ...Anyway, both of those filters are hydrophobic. The 085046 filter is for high humidity applications. This has little to do with the hydrophobic capabilities and deals with micro biotic growth since constant high humidity, think of boats that are always in the water moored to a dock, will have greater abilities for mold and such to develop on them. It should be noted that the 085046 filter is a LOT more expensive and there is no air flow or hydrophobic benefit over the 085011.

I guess what you have is good enough to roll coal and that's all you want. If you ever want to make some power and not be the slowest truck on the road you'll get some decent tunes and more supportin mods

It only smokes if I lug it its a stick it clears up, besides when my propane injection kit is finished shell be burning clean, slowest truck on the road please I don't use it to race I haul fifth wheel trailers , I'm not just another punk kid with a diesel and have no trailer, but if u do wanna run em give a time and place

propane? you may not be a punk ass kid but you are a dumb ass human being. 280 horse hand shaker vs my truck? yeah i'll take that all day everyday

Dude u can call me a dumbass and say my trucks slow lol it don't bother me, I kno what I have and I like my set up , ur the dumbass who started this pissing contest, anyway I hope your truck works out good for ya... P.s lady's love a slow powerstroke

'94IDITurbo7.3

no problem! any time!

What kind of boost does your idi make ? Btw lol

ladies like the slow boosting and slow IDI................just sayin....

Bruce- why is everybody that has an opinion that is not in agreement with you a dumbass? The guy just said his .02 on the topic for the OP and what you have is far better....as always.

:whs:

If we want to bust chops and measure dicks, go find the duramax or cummins forums. We are all strokers over here. Am I right? Guys? You guys are strokers too? Guys? Hello.....? Sent from AutoGuide.com App

the guy is an idiot because he wants to run propane to make hp. i don't care what kind of mods y'all do its your truck but if you want to do it the best way and save some denero i help out. 3-400 for an intake is insane to me

Description.

Cold air intakes are among the best modifications for the 7.3 Powerstroke. The factory intake system is restrictive which allows for great performance gains and numerous other benefits by upgrading to a higher flowing intake, like our 4" Boosted Performance Open Intake. An intake upgrade is even more important on tuned Powerstrokes' running above stock boost levels as the additional airflow further increases turbo efficiency and power gains.

Upgrading to our 7.3 Powerstroke intake system will provide both horsepower and torque gains, faster turbo spool, quicker throttle response, lower EGTs, and a cool engine sound. Our intake is a direct bolt-on fitment and helps free up space in the engine bay and add a cool aesthetic compared to the bulky OEM intake box. Our 4" intake is a completely open system - closed box designs are restrictive and flow less than open intakes which is why we opt for a fully open intake that maximizes airflow and therefore performance.

Our 7.3 Powerstroke intake upgrade is the best combination of price, performance, and quality on the market.

7.3 Powerstroke Intake Upgrade Benefits:

  • -Approx. 8-15whp and 15-25wtq power gains
  • -Significant improvement to airflow over factory intake
  • -Faster turbo spool
  • -Quicker throttle response
  • -Decreased EGTs
  • -Cool engine sounds

Product Features

  • -4" aluminum piping, CNC mandrel bent
  • -S&B filter
  • -Open air design for maximum performance
  • -Wrinkle black finish for reduced heat transfer
  • -Direct factory bolt-on, all hardware included

Comments: Intake was super easy to install and looks awesome in my engine bay. Adds a cool noise to the engine too and definitely provides a noticeable increase in pedal response and seems like a bit more horsepower too. So far I'm seeming to get a little more than 1mpg increase from the intake alone, I'm not tuned yet. Overall very happy with the intake!

  • Add to quote

I'm looking to add an cold air intake to my 03 7.3ex I have a DP tuner and i love it (recommended from this site) as well as i run a greasel from golden fuel system. I have my tuck gaged out an lately i have been ruining hot at the turbo so I'm trying to fix that with the cold air intake. I'm looking for the best but noise is a big factor. - S&B $269.00 but I'm worried about the noise and i don't know why its not a closed system. -AFE Stage 2 w/ ProGuard 7 $399.00 a bit pricey but if its the best - Banks Ram-air intake $179 seamed cheep - something else I'm going to do more modifications seamed like the cold air intake was a good start. Thank you in advance for your help

RT

Probably the best system out there is the Ford Severe Duty AIS - it uses a Donaldson filter that flows better and filters better than anything out there. The Tymar is a close second. Almost everything else sacrifices flow for efficiency or vice versa. You can get the whole kit at RockAuto (includes the filter) for $178 MOTORCRAFT Part # FA1759 Most other sites charge $240 and up for the same kit.

WOW that's cheep!!! what are your thoughts on pipes and exhaust and mufflers would that lower the temp as well. Also i heard that 5in pipes are bad for your engine. and how loud would 5in pipes be?

My opinion is the turbo is 3.5 inches on the exhaust side. That's the restriction point and it has to be the restriction point in order to spin the turbo. No tube bigger than that, including the stock exhaust, is going to be a restriction. Therefore, big exhausts look good (to some people) and do nothing to improve efficiency. The stock muffler is an offset design and can get soot plugged. The Walker BTM is a straight through muffler. The 7.3 just isn't a loud motor (exhaust wise) - you'll never get it to sound like a 12 valve Cummins. Even with no muffler, they aren't that much louder than stock. About the only time you can even hear the exhaust is when you are running under a bridge with your windows down. I like my Walker BTM - (Walker #21470) http://www.blackclouddiesel.com/Tech/Walker BTM Installation Guide.pdf

What do you think of the AFE Stage 2 w/ ProGuard 7. I will see if my mufflers are soot plugged i have 130K on my truck any idea when they usually crap out. and i will look into the walker BTM Thank you

Two strikes against it from my perspective. I don't like open box designs since it increases risk of water intrusion if you are in any wet areas - hit a puddle just right and you might get a wet filter. Also, washable filters - notably the K&N - are know for dusting these motors. They just aren't as efficient at filtering. They flow more air because the are more porous. The Donaldson flows more air because it has a dramatically increased surface area. I swapped my muffler at 175,000 - it was about twice as heavy as it should have been, but still flowing ok. I just wanted to get ahead of it and the price was right on the Walker.

i just ordered the Ford Severe Duty AIS thanks again

When the Severe Duty AIS was introduced, a few of us did some tests included - in my case against all previous Y2K airboxes, filters and OEM upgrades as well as K&N panel, and some aftermarket coldairs, etc. Bottom line is that the Donaldson system is bottlenecked in the filter housing, so you need to add the extra inlet to the airbox from the LHS fender to give full flow (Zoodad or equivalent). The Donaldson filter element flows WAY more air than anything in the aftermarket could ever dream of - never mind their ridiculous claims. Also, the quality of filtration from the Donaldson is infinitely superior. IIRC, one of the biggest surprises was how bad the K&N panel filter was at flow (I measured pressure drop as an analogy, and it was HUGE). So much for truth in advertising.

If i dot the zoodad mod will that be enough air into the filter. Or does it need the hole out to the fender well mod? don't know the name of that mod yet.

One important goal to gain power is to get more air in (and out). If your sucking the filter minder down with so much turbo boost, you're not getting enough air for the demand of the engine. Not say water/meth is good or bad...but the basics need to be covered first. Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk

RT RockAuto shipping is fast AIS is hopefully to be installed this weekend weather permeating. I'm kinda hesitant to install a water/meth sprayer into my intake. Just seams wrong. How much does it spray, how long does 5gal last? I also get 20 hi way 15 city. Most days i don't need any more power but i do pull a trailer sometimes. Is there a DYS mod. I'm running out of room I have another 20 gal tank on my truck all ready. Where does this 5gal tank go? BTW I drive 20,000 miles a year. About 19,000 on grease.

Best flowing and filtering system for a 7.3 is the Tymar ..second best for a SD is the AIS..both will last 40-60k even in very dirty conditions..never use a washable filter..

I have an AIS with the "through the fender" kit, but Jody at DP just told me that even at the relatively low level of power gain I am looking for (200 lbs ft) that the AIS just does not flow enough air. He suggested I go back to the stock airbox, modify the section near the grill (open it up) to allow cold air to enter and use an Afe "drop-in" filter. I asked if there is a more free flowing filter that can be used in the AIS housing and he indicated not. DOC

There is a balance between air flow and filtration you have to consider. The AFE Stage 2 uses a pro guard 7 washable filter. Washable filters inherently have poorer filtration capabilities and are especially bad in the hands of someone who doesn't maintain them religiously. If you opt to go with the dry filter, you actually get worse air flow than the AIS. Here's a statement from a Donaldson engineer given to another member: " I spoke directly with Jordan Flagstad - I was the one he gave those flow numbers to. He is an engineer at Donaldson. Donaldson makes the big filter (B085011) that Dale Isley puts on his Tymar setup. Donaldson makes the AIS kit and the Power Core filter that goes into it. Donaldson did the comparison flow testing. They tested the flow through their entire AIS kit as they sell it (or as Ford dealers sell it), and they tested their B085011 filter alone hooked up to the flow test equipment. And the flow through the Power Core filter installed in the AIS housing, plastic housing and all, showed 8.3" of restriction at 500 CFM flow. The flow through the B085011 filter alone, hooked directly up to the test equipment (ie. - open to airflow all the way around the filter) showed 10" of restriction at the same 500 CFM flow. This is how Jordan explained it to me, and this is why I am replacing my Tymar with the AIS. " So - if you are really after horsepower and are willing to sacrifice filtration - why not just run without a filter. Its not that much worse than using a washable filter....

Sounds like you have a mildly tuned truck in a similar range to what I am discussing with Jody. Jody indicated that my truck with his 80 HP tow tune would "peg" the filter minder on my AIS well before reaching full power output. Do you have one of these on yours and, if so, what is your experience? Is it possible that mildy DP tuned 7.3s pull a lot more than 500CFM approaching full power? (You are a customer of Jody's so I assume you respect his opinion.) DOC

DOC4444 I love the DP tuner I get great gas millage and plenty of power when I need it. I broke my stock intake box some how. So im replacing it with the AIS I did not do the instal last week bc I order a fender sleeve has not arrived yet. So im going to do the zoodad and the finder mod at the same time. I will post results when i get them im going to put a small pre filter on both only different mod then the standerd.

DOC - I can pull the filter minder half way on a WOT run. That's the filter minder that came with the AIS. Now here's the caveat. Everyone who runs the AIS has noticed the filter minder on it is infinitely more sensitive than the stock. Most everyone throws the new filter minder away and transfers their stock one back for that reason. I didn't. My filter is one year old (just got the new one in the mail yesterday) and it still will only pull halfway down on a WOT run. I have no reason to believe that my truck is having trouble with air restriction - I build 25psi+ boost very quickly. The truck has so much power its scary. I do trust Jody 100%, but I wonder if he knows about the increased sensitivity of the new AIS filter minder?

How new is the "new" AIS filter minder? (I have had my AIS for almost a couple of years.) Mine is part # 2U2J-9N622-AA DOC

I just meant the one that came with the AIS as opposed to the original one that came with the truck. I don't think its been changed since the AIS was introduced.

Update: installed the Ford Severe Duty AIS. Did the zoodad mod fender well mod? Don't know how helpful the fender mod was but I can here the zoodad suck in air. I think the ASI is a little restricted ie sucking thou a huge filter and a straw. The gage has not moved so that is good just sounds/feels restrictive when i punch it geting on the hiway. Temps are little cooler so that is good not as much as i would have hoped. Next step is to instal the Walker. Thank you all for your help. PS When ever your temps go up it my be the fule filer. Changed mine and it dropped the temps at the turbo. I only had about 8k miles on it as well.

So I am looking to upgrade my intake and exhaust on my 2001 7.3 Excursion as well. I am specifically interested in improving milage. This Ford Severe Duty AIS looks like a decent option. Can someone explain the zoodad fender mod to me? I believe I understand that it is a hole behind the fender to pull more air and has a foam sleeve connecting the hole in the fender to a 3.5 inch cutout into the box. Is this correct, or is there more to it? Is there an improvement that can be made with the stage between the filter box and the intake on the turbo? Or a part you fellows would suggest? I am also interested in an economical turbo back exhaust. I have found one on Summit's site for as little as $250 with no tip. Thoughts? Advice? I also have a Diablo Sport chip and it has a fuel economy setting as well. Casey

The stock intake and exhaust are not restrictive enough to achieve any mileage gains by replacing them. The intake is done to improve filtration. The exhaust is just for sound (unless you are removing a cat) - your money is best spent elsewhere if you are looking for MPG gains. Sent from my Autoguide iPhone app

If you have a Cat..then replacing the system will get you MPG's.. Jordan Flagstad ..have called him repeatedly to confirm this statement..never responds, everyone else at Donaldson hasn't a clue to any reports that a ais is better than a Tymar. So untill this is proved I'll stand by that a Tymar will do. Although the AIS will give better filtration efficiency, you are only talking about 1/10 of a percent over the filter Tymar Performance Intakes use at initial filtration efficiencies. Not enough of a difference to really differentiate between the two. For the longevity, you have to start talking about restriction ranges in both stock and aftermarket applications and how dirt will affect them. AIS has a larger capacity, but not across the restriction ranges once installed on the truck. Because of the configuration you are not lowering restriction significant over stock levels, but you are receiving better filtration compared to the stock intake. The Tymar Intake will allow lower restriction levels and lasts approximately 15K miles in a restriction range LOWER than stock. If you want to go with longevity of filter, you can continue using the same filter and will simply not experience the positive benefits of lower than stock restriction levels.

caryt - I do have a cat and would be eliminating it with these mods. What kind of gain do you think I could expect? 2 MPG maybe? rt - Where else should I look then to help improve on MPG?
