CONCERT REVIEW: QUEENSRŸCHE and MARTY FRIEDMAN Bring Supercharged and Eclectic Musical Mixture to Denver (March 20th, 2023)

queensryche 2023 tour review

Queensrÿche made a stop in Denver Friday on its current “Digital Noise Alliance” tour, much to the excitement of a packed out house at the Gothic Theatre. Supporting the bill was Marty Friedman with band members from Japan, as well as a new rendition of the Bay Area thrash band, Trauma , who in the early 80s claimed to have Metallica late bass player Cliff Burton as a member.

I missed the Trauma performance as I got to the venue a few minutes before the start of Friedman ‘s set. Marty and his band are enjoying the opportunity to play live in the United States after a lengthy absence due to the pandemic and its touring challenges. Although no mention of Marty ’s former association with Megadeth was announced, the crowd clearly remembered Marty , his undeniable six string skills, as well as his massive mane of curly hair. His supporting band, comprised of guitarist Naoki Morioka , bassist Wakazaemon , and drummer Chargeeeeee , seemed to be having a blast letting loose on the club circuit of America. While Wakazaemon and Morioka maintained a balance of love for the music and a respectful Japanese reserve, drummer Chargeeeeee stole the show with his platinum blonde hair, black lipstick and wild attack on the drum-kit. In introducing the band, Friedman referred to him as “from another planet.” The eclectic set was raucously received and Marty seemed genuinely touched by the crowd response, which was even bigger than his Paul Stanley -like platform boots. The instrumental set came and went quickly, leaving the energized crowd in a worked up fury.

queensryche 2023 tour review

Queensrÿche took the stage about 20 minutes later, entering the darkness on the heels of Pantera ’s “Walk” that drew the crowd to rapt attention. They kicked off the set with “Behind the Walls,” the first single off their recent 2022 release, followed by “Don’t Look Back” from the 2013 self-titled album, and then surprisingly, two tracks from 1984’s “The Warning.” Four tracks in, it was clear that this wasn’t going to be a rehash of the well-worn setlist they’ve trotted out for so many years. It’s no surprise to anyone that songs from “Empire” and “Operation Mindcrime” are the biggest crowd pleasers and safest plays. They’re what a lot of fans come out to hear. But the band has produced so much more material, including four solid studio records, with “new” singer Todd LaTorre , and as Todd admitted to the crowd, they believe in their new music and want to play more than the same old stuff.

Perhaps as one might predict, this is a double-edged sword. It gives the band a chance to work newer material into a live set and have some fun showcasing newer tracks, but it also leaves the more casual fans in attendance scratching their heads somewhat, waiting for a more familiar tune to arrive to rejuvenate the crowd energy.

There was no mistake that “Spreading the Disease,” “ Jet City Woman” and “Eyes of a Stranger” pulled the greatest response from the crowd. These are songs the crowd has grown up with and internalized during their youth. As mentioned in my review of “Digital Noise Alliance” , the new release is excellent, but there’s no denying that it has reached far fewer ears. Such is the dilemma of a band like Queensrÿche , who have a deep catalog and continue to make new music. The band has a storied history of drama with personnel changes that have injured its legacy, but the current lineup seems to like working with each other and they are standing tall behind their current work, playing 7 songs of the 16-track set-list from the LaTorre era recordings.

Noticeably absent from the set was “Silent Lucidity,” perhaps the band’s most commercially successful and recognized song. Filling that void from a vibe sense was “Forest,” a newer song that gained the greatest response in particular from the ladies in the audience. Todd introduced the song by explaining that it was about trying to capture the feeling of having a loved one still felt within us, even though they’ve since passed away. Asking for an “open mind,” he received it. The crowd settled down and soaked it in all the way through. Then, the signature bass rumbling of Eddie Jackson on “Jet City Woman” vaulted the energy level back up again.

While the band is down to two original members, it’s easy for some to dismiss this as a “cover” band of Queensrÿche . In reality, it’s another version of the band, who have earned the right to stand on their newer songs to a certain degree simply due to the quality of the more recent material. I, for one, and happy to not have the same set-list year after year, but I would have liked to hear perhaps one or two more golden tracks from the band’s pinnacle years of success. In particular, rather than closing the encore with “Road to Madness” (also from the debut), I would have liked to have seen the crowd sent home with “Revolution Calling” or “I Don’t Believe in Love” still ringing in their ears. But there’s probably no way to make everyone happy and credit must be given to the band for standing behind their new material.

Production was a bit on the simpler side, and some missed mic cues and amp feedback made the performance imperfect but authentic. Todd hit all the high notes well, despite recently having to cancel a few shows due to losing his voice. Playing Denver can be a wildcard as the altitude here can wreak havoc on some singers, but Todd managed to be his usual self in the singing department. Equally as important, the tandem lead chorus solos that are the signature sound of Queensrÿche rang out strong between Mike Stone and Michael Wilton in spots where it mattered most. Drummer Casey Grillo was solid, but bathed in darkness most of the light, reducing the amount of attention drawn to him.

All in all, it was anything but a greatest hits show, but one that served to justify the ongoing development and sustained performance of a stalwart metal titan nearing 40 years of music. If  you think they’re a has-been act from the late 80s, I challenge you to give a few spins of “Digital Noise Alliance” with an open mind and judge for yourself. They’re still the “thinking man’s metal” band, and I mean that totally as a compliment.

Digital noise alliance tour, with trauma and marty friedman, the palladium worcester, massachusetts april 7, 2023, photos & review by dan wenc.

queensryche 2023 tour review

WORCESTER, Mass. – Queensrÿche on the road for 2023 in support of their latest studio album, Digital Noise Alliance . The supporting musical entourage that would accompany this tour was Trauma and Marty Friedman. The night was a mix of various metal genres, Trauma with thrash and Marty Friedman with a melodic instrumental guitar show, along with his supporting band. The Queensrÿche set would present an assortment of new music and long time classics.

Maybe you have or have not heard of Trauma before. If you haven’t, you might have been left wondering if they were a new and up and coming band fortunate to open for Queensrÿche on this tour. If you thought that, you would be incorrect.

Trauma was supporting their fourth studio album Awakening, which was released in September 2022. Another tidbit on Trauma was that they have been around since 1981, one of the original thrash metal bands along side of Exodus, Metallica, and Testament, to trail-blaze the style of thrash metal. Trauma’s original bassist was none other than the late/legendary Cliff Burton of Metallica.

The group’s current line-up consists of singer Brian Allen (who replaced original vocalist Donny Hillier, who passed away in 2020), Steve Robello on guitar, Joe Fraulob on guitar, Michael Spencer on bass, and Kris Gustofson on drums.

Trauma brought the old-school thrash vibe with a six song set to set the mood for the night. The crowd filed in,  all attention was to Trauma on the Palladium stage. Check them out, Trauma is all about the old school trash metal sound. Trauma put on an entertaining set. Visit Trauma’s web page for more: https://www.traumametal.com

Next up was Marty Friedman, the accomplished guitarist who comes from Megadeth fame as well as his own successful solo career. Friedman had tenure with Megadeth from 1990 with the Rust In Peace album, through all of the albums in between, up to the 1999, Risk album.

Friedman took center stage and made his guitar sing and the crowd applaud. Friedman would put on a seven song instrumental set of his own works, with a hint of of Megadeth’s “Tornado of Souls.”

Queensrÿche had just come off of 2022 as a supporting band for Judas Priest with a lengthy tour run. During that time, Queensrÿche had managed to put together their latest album, Digital Noise Alliance, the sixteenth studio album in the band’s discography.

This would be my tenth time, since 1991, that I have seen Queensrÿche perform live. Seven of those times were with Todd La Torre on vocals. Queensrÿche live never disappoints. The albums that Queensryche have put out over the past several years with LaTorre on vocals has been top quality work.

Leading up to the show I had been hearing things online about the setlist and that it would mostly contain a lot of new material. Honestly, I had a little concern, only because, of course I wanted to hear all the classics. I had listened to the new album and it is excellent. I thought the band did a great job curating this setlist for this night, there was something for everyone, and the new stuff would rock the house.

To start the night was a pre-recorded track of Pantera’s “Walk”, the pre-performance energy built up in The Palladium. Queensrÿche took to the stage, opening with “Behind the Walls” from the new album and “Don’t Look Back” from LaTorre’s 2013 inaugural Queensryche album. And then it was to 1984 for “Child of Fire” from The Warning album. Each song flowed very seamlessly from new to old, the crowd seemed to enjoy it all as well.

LaTorre took a moment in between songs to speak to the crowd, he did say that they would be playing new songs from the new album and that this tour was geared towards promoting the Digital Noise Alliance album. Rightfully so. This is an album worthy of delivering to the fans live. It was one of those nights that was memorable, where you can say I heard those new songs for the first time this night. Just like I can say that I heard the new songs from the Empire album back in 1991.

queensryche 2023 tour review

Queensrÿche of today is Michael Wilton (guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass), Todd LaTorre (vocals), Mike Stone (guitar) and Casey Grillo (drums).

The set continued along with “En Force”, “Spreading the Disease,” “In Extremis,” from DNA, “Light-Years” from The Verdict  and “Sic Death” from DNA .

Introducing another new song from DNA album, LaTorre took a moment to prepare the crowd that they were going to slow things down quite a bit with a new song, “Forest.” LaTorre explained the story behind the song, as it had to do with the feeling of losing a parent. This was a good song and has a good sound to it. I would equate it to a modern day alternative to “Silent Lucidity.”

The later part of the set included “Jet City Woman,” “Empire,” “My Empty Room,” and “Eyes of a Stranger.”

Concluding a very brief encore the band returned to the stage and closed out the night with three more, “Deliverance,” “Queen of the Reich,” and “Roads to Madness,” which LaTorre said that had not been played live since 1985.

It was nother great night of Queensrÿche in Worcester. A perfect blend of material from the Digital Noise Alliance, Condition Human and Queensryche albums, intertwined with a perfect balance of choice selections of timeless Rÿche classics. As much as I thought would miss out on hearing the usual songs, I didn’t miss it at all. I’ve heard them live before. Being my tenth time seeing this band live, this was a fresh set. Well done!

Queensrÿche will still be out on the road for a good portion of 2023, catch them at a city near you. For more on Queensrÿche, new music and tour dates, visit: http://www.queensrycheofficial.com

Guitarist Mike Stone , who rejoined QUEENSRŸCHE last year, contributed guitar solos to the band's new studio album.

Since late May 2021, Stone has been handling second-guitar duties in QUEENSRŸCHE , which announced in July 2021 that longtime guitarist Parker Lundgren was exiting the group to focus on "other business ventures."

Stone originally joined QUEENSRŸCHE for the 2003 album "Tribe" and stayed with the band for six years before leaving the group.

For the past five and a half years, drummer Casey Grillo has been filling in for Rockenfield , who stepped away from the band's touring activities in early 2017 to spend time with his young son.

In October 2021, Rockenfield filed a lawsuit against Wilton and Jackson , alleging, among other things, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and wrongful discharge. A few months later, Wilton and Jackson filed a countersuit against Rockenfield , accusing him of abandoning his position as a member of the band and misappropriating the group's assets to his own personal benefit.

“‘Sicdeth’ is an abstract tale about convicted killers and the fallout of those attached on both sides,” remarked singer Todd La Torre. “How can the victims’ and the assailants’ families overcome such pain? The inmate now has only their mind with which to escape. The song lyrics discretely touch on the very polarizing convicted murderer Jody Arias. The video however was more tailored to the Aileen Wuornos case .”

Queensryche Plays Deep Cuts at 2023 Tour Kickoff: Set List, Video

Queensryche kicked off their Digital Noise Alliance Tour on Friday at Orlando, Fla.'s Plaza Theatre, debuting several songs off their new album of the same name and unearthing a handful of deep cuts that they hadn't played in years.

You can see the full set list (via setlist.fm ) and videos of the performance below.

The Seattle rockers opened their show with the  Digital Noise Alliance one-two punch of "In Extremis" and "Lost in Sorrow," the latter a live debut. They then dusted off Operation: Mindcrime cut "Spreading the Disease" for the first time since 2012, followed by  The Warning 's "Child of Fire" for the first time since 2014.

Other live debuts included  Digital Noise Alliance tracks "Sicdeth" and "Forest," along with the 2013  Queensryche song "Don't Look Back" and "Inner Unrest" off 2019's  The Verdict .  Mindcrime deep cut "My Empty Room" also appeared for the first time since 2015.

The greatest surprise, however, came in the two-song encore, which began with  The Warning 's "Deliverance," which Queensryche hadn't played since 1987. They closed the show with another  The Warning song, "Roads to Madness," which they played for the first time since 2013.

Digital Noise Alliance  marks the fourth consecutive Queensryche release with singer Todd La Torre, who replaced classic-era frontman  Geoff Tate . "The whole rebuilding process is progressing well," La Torre told  Classic Rock in November. "For the most part, it's about giving the fans what they want: the [signature] Queensryche sound. That's something we've done over countless tours and several albums. It's a work in progress, but right now everything feels very strong."

The Digital Noise Alliance Tour will run through April 16 with support from ex- Megadeth  guitarist Marty Friedman and  Cliff Burton 's pre- Metallica  band Trauma.

Queensrÿche is heavy metal band from Bellevue, Washington, US that gained wide success after the release of their 1988 album “Operation: Mindcrime”. The band has a strong tie to the progressive rock genre and also has been known to create concept albums.

Before the original members of Queensrÿche formed their band they were all in several different metal bands that were influenced by such artists as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. After some of the members’ bands started to dissolve, vocalist Geoff Tate, guitarists Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton, bassist Eddie Jackson, and drummer Scott Rockenfield formed a band called The Mob, but soon changed their name to Queensrÿche after their song “Queen of the Reich”, which was on the band’s demo tape. The band’s demo tape made it to “Kerrang!” magazine and received a great review from the publication. This review led to Queensrÿche releasing the demo as a self-titled EP in 1983. The EP sold significantly well for an independent release and received much airplay over the radios.

In the summer of 1983 the band signed a record contract with EMI and headed on several high profile tours with bands like Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, and Dio. The band traveled to London, UK to record their first album “The Warning”, which came out in 1984. The producer James Guthrie, who has notably worked with Judas Priest and Pink Floyd, produced the album for the band. Their debut album did fairly well on the Billboard charts reaching the No. 61 position.

By the release of the band’s 1986 album “Rage for Order” they had undertaken a more glam rock appearance due to the suggestion from their record label, but their sound headed in a more progressive rock direction, which incorporated the use of synthesizers in their heavy metal mix. The lyrics in the album also conveyed themes about artificial intelligence and technological ideas.

In 1988 the band released one of their most critically and commercially successful albums to date, “Operation: Mindcrime”. The album is a concept album that is regarded as one of the best concept albums of all time, and has been ranked by “Kerrang!” as one of the best heavy metal albums of all time. The album reached the No. 50 position on the Billboard 200 chart and was later certified platinum by RIAA. The album contained the singles “Eyes of a Stranger/Queen of the Reich”, “Revolution Calling”, and “I Don’t Believe in Love/The Needle Lies”. The song “I Don’t Believe in Love” was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Metal Performance”. The band’s next album “Empire”, which came out in 1990 was even more successful than “Operation: Mindcrime”. The album reached the No. 7 position on the Billboard 200 chart and has become 3x platinum. The album contained the power ballad “Silent Lucidity” that was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Although the band has had a few lineup changes and has experimented with different genres such as grunge, the band still regularly releases quality albums. The lineup after the 2012 departure of lead singer Geoff Tate consists of the members: Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield, Parker Lundgren, and Todd La Torre. Queensrÿche are avid performers and tour consistently. They have played notable venues like Madison Square Garden and have toured with the likes of Iron Maiden, Kiss, Metallica, and Def Leppard.

Live reviews

I have to hand it to Queensryche. They were on top of it. Musically and vocally flawless. Huge sound. Every bit as good as when I saw them with the original lineup in 1991. Smaller production, obviously, but fun and fitting. The new singer is phenomenal and very charismatic. Everyone was at the top of their game, and for a band that has been (mostly) together for 40 years, that is crazy. The setlist was a great mix of new stuff and classic. The whole band was fully engaged and having a great time. Very impressive show.

John 5 was ridiculous. Jaw-droppingly amazing virtuoso talent. I don't think I have ever seen a more technically proficient guitarist EVER. Normally I'm not super into guitar instrumental wankery, but he LOVES music, loves playing guitar and loves performing, and his energy is infectious. He also played banjo and what looked to be a kid's mini-scale First Act guitar. And, yeah, he was amazing on both. Crazy show, too. At one point he did a medley, which for some might've been cheesy, but he literally crammed like 30-40 (Who knows? We all lost count.) of the best and most iconic guitar riffs from all of rock music into one crazy schizophrenic bout of musical ADD with the highest level of technical prowess. He is so good it makes me feel kind of sorry for his band, who are also ridiculously talented ... but who can take their eyes of a guy that is both a consummate showman and quite possibly one of the best guitarists to ever pick up the instrument? Rock, metal, Chet Atkins and Roy Clark-style chicken picking, shredding worthy of EVH in his prime. Freaking guy can do anything with a stringed instrument. He's so crazy good, it makes you feel like you've never even seen someone play the instrument correctly before. I didn't know tons about him before the show (other than his work with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie), but he definitely made a fan last night.

Unfortunately, Eve to Adam wasn't really my thing. I mean, they tried hard and seemed affable enough. Just not my style. With song titles like "Straightjacket Supermodel," you kind of know what you're in for. They are all talented musicians, though, and certainly gave it their all. Not a bad bunch by any means, just not crazy about their music.

What can I say about this Queensryche show except WOW! They've long been a favourite of mine, and I've been fortunate enough to see them many times over their long and brilliant career. They opened with the powerful Blood Of The Levant off the new album, The Verdict (absolutely brilliant album by the way). The crowd was rocking out and singing along from the first note. The rest of the set was a mix of more from the new album combined with lots of classic Queensryche spanning nearly their entire catalog. I also can't say enough about how fantastic Todd LaTorre is on vocals. If I'm honest, he can sing rings around their former vocalist (who shall not be named) and sounds equally at home on their older stuff as he is on the newer material since he joined the band.Eddie Jackson is one of the best bass players in hard rock and metal and he takes up a lot of backing vocals and sounds great. The dual guitars of Michael Wilton and Parker Lundgren work well and they play off each other perfectly. Casey Grillo (formerly of Kamelot) rounds things out on drums. They are still very much a top notch metal band and if you have the chance to see them, I highly recommend it.

Progressive metal rockers Queensrÿche have now been touring for over three decades so there is no surprise that each of the members are of the highest level of skill on their respective instruments. Although they have gone through various lineup alterations, the current lineup is a strong touring machine with great onstage rapport and a real ability to whip the crowd into frenzy with classic tracks.

The stage show is of little decoration but much to the delight of fans the amps are huge and the guitar riffs are unforgiving. The ageing band really does attack the stage with an unrivalled amount of passion and create an anthemic atmosphere during 'Eyes of a Stranger'. Other highlights come in the form of 'Queen Of The Ryche' which sounds as momentous as when it was first released over three years ago as well as an extended version of 'I Am I'. They hold back 'Jet City Woman' for the encore so as to get the whole room singing along for one final time.

I've been a fan of this band from the very early days, beginning in about 1986 or so. I've seen them several times over the years, watched their evolution as a band and seen the differences because of line up changes.

As most Queensryche fans know, the band has parted ways with their original lead singer, Geoff Tate. One of the things I've loved so much about this band is the powerful vocals. And in recent years, I hate to say it, but Geoff's vocal style has changed, not bad necessarily, but not what he used to be.

Now enters Todd LaTorre, of Crimson Glory as their new lead singer. Todd has breathed new life into a band that I feared were on their way out. He has all of the power to be able to perform the classics like Take Hold Of The Flame and Queen Of The Reich, and he sounds incredible on their newer material as well. His presence has refreshed and reinvigorated an incredible group of musicians.

Queensryche- Atlanta, Ga. 4 may 2016

So, in my concert history, I have seen 3 separate versions of Queensryche. The original on the "rage" tour (opening for Ratt). The Tate version in ATL a year ago. Now the "latest" version of this great band. To be honest, I love all three so I won't be picking one over the other in this review. The show I saw this month was fantastic! In this venue we were right up front. The visuals on the led screens were tight. The sound was spot on. Most importantly, the band was phenomenal. With an amazingly accurate lead singer belting out the greats like Tate wishes he still could, this latest version of 'ryche comes out swinging and never lets up. They pull some deep tracks out to play and hit all the ones you want to hear with only one glaring omission...but I won't be the spoiler. Bottom line, if you love Queensryche...go! Don't miss this powerful performance.

The concert overall was ok, just ok because the sound wasn't what I expected and used to from their last show I had seen (~2 years ago); a quiet disappointing experience was the "meet & greet": even though there were maybe 40 people at max that purchased these rather expensive meet & greet tickets the band did not spend any time greeting or meeting their fans; everybody had about 10 seconds to get a photo with the band and the photo was taken with a cellphone and I was told I would receive an email with the link to the photo... guess what, I didn't receive anything; also no handshake and no autograph, nothing; I'll never purchase a meet & greet ticket again.

I really enjoyed the show. I sadly, had to leave early because my mother was picking me up. But atleast I got a chance to see u guys for the 2nd time. Eve to Adam and John 5 were amazing, but the final act Queensryche was the best. I hope The Verdict Tour was fun for u guys, even though the album itself was incredible. I only had 2 regrets, 1 being me leaving early, cuz Queensryche is my favorite band. And the other being Not buying VIP passes cuz I would have liked to meet and greet with u guys. But anyway if u guys (Queensryche) r reading this, Queensryche will always be one of my favorite bands and I will definitely see u guys again sometime.

I couldn't believe it!

What an amazing show . . . .after all of these years these guys rock hard!

Being a loyal fan of Geoff Tate, I couldn't believe how great the new guy is!

Todd La Torre - get used to the name - what a great voice - I absolutely love the new album The Verdict. He is awesome on the album.

Todd could also sing the 'classics' without an issue WOW!

This band is NEW and Classic at the same time!

The rest of the band jammed as always - this is my fourth 'Ryche show - first with the new dude.

I am gonna try to see them again before the end of the tour.

Very disappointed... They sounded like a garage band in a garage... The Venue is a location I will never attend again... The sound and lighting were the worst I've seen in Utah or Idaho..... The singer seemed more intent on getting smashed than singing.... You could tell they were' just going through the motion.....no energy at all... I have tickets for forthall but I've wasted enough time any money on them.....oh Meytal the opener was terrific.......

Absolutely Amazing night of Queensrÿche!

Wow!!!! The band just seems to get better with age. Todd's vocals are incredible and compliment the setlist old and new songs alike.

I have been a Rÿche fan since 1984 and it is always a great concert when they play.

If you are not sure about seeing them all I can say is GO!!!!!!! You will not be disappointed.

The only thing I would change : drop the 2 opening acts and play a much longer set.

SACRED WARRIOR/ QUEENSRYCHE show- Oct.21, 2023- BMI Event Center,Versailles, OH

queensryche 2023 tour review

Third and final show of the Rocktober concert series at Ohio’s BMI Event Center, and by now you’ve seen the blueprint: venue owner Steve Barhorst books a classic christian metal band to open for a larger mainstream metal artist, often in the same styling, and we watch to see what happens.

queensryche 2023 tour review

SACRED WARRIOR, legendary power metal band originally from the Chicago area, needs no introduction. The band is still made up of 4 founding members: Rey Parra with the golden pipes, Bruce Swift on guitar, Steve Watkins on bass, and powerhouse Tony Velasquez on drums, with more recent member Tom Sanderson on keys. Second guitarist Jonathan Johnson is currently on family leave, while Larry Worley, of Love Life, Fear Not, Deny the Fallen fame, fills his shoes quite capably.

queensryche 2023 tour review

Warrior were known in the late 80’s/early 90’s for their hard hitting melodic power/ progressive metal, topped by Parra’s soaring vocals, inviting comparisons to Queensryche and Iron Maiden. The band juggled their setlist from Immortal and whittled it down to a bullet train of heaviness.

queensryche 2023 tour review

Warrior opened with “No Happy Endings,” from Wicked Generation , returning to the concept album at times through their set. Next came “Temples on Fire,” from Obsessions, that starts with a rousing drum sequence that rivals Judas Priest’s “Pain Killer,” and showcases the mad skills of one Tony Velasquez, who had a heart replacement surgery a handful of years ago and was told by doctors that he would never drum again. Thanks to God, Tony has proven them wrong again and again! Next, “Rebellion,” title track from the debut merged right into the instrumental “Onward Warriors” from Master’s Command . “Remember Me” from Obsessions has a softer haunting melody and proved to be the band’s only “lighter” mood.

queensryche 2023 tour review

“War Torn Hero” is another heavy hitter from  Wicked Generation , followed by the depiction of Jesus’ pursuit of us in “Mad Man” from  Obsessions . “Day of the Lord,” from the debut (and opened their Immortal set) shows up late in their set this time, closing their stage time with a bang with the title track from  Wicked Generation,  a poignant track showing just how unpolitically correct it is to read the Bible and take what it says to heart in this wicked generation.

queensryche 2023 tour review

So, a short set, ground to a razor sharp point from our heroes. Sacred Warrior made mention beforehand, how much they had been inspired by Queensryche, and Rey, who can play the ham at times, made a point that there would be no fooling around and he would cut out a lot of the inter-song banter. And that they did, other than Rey encouraging “Everybody up!” a couple times- but just when my heart began crying out for a message that this rare opportunity would not be lost, guitarist Bruce stepped up and gave a brief message of hope, establishing the fact that the band are Christians, and that they don’t look down on you if you’re not believers, but if you find yourself looking for something (or Someone) to look the band up on the internet and talk to them. Just what needed to be said. For believers, the Holy Spirit lives in us and gives us the words to say before our human minds can even comprehend them. The fans seemed to thoroughly enjoy Sacred Warrior and appreciate their musicianship and won many over as fans. Of the 3 concerts, Warrior had the largest crowd of Christian metalheads out to support them, and the largest number of the crowd standing for their performance.

queensryche 2023 tour review

QUEENSRYCHE is also a band needing little introduction. The Seattle area band has been playing their theatrical blend of power and progressive metal since 1981. In spite of their very public divorce with original singer Geoff Tate in 2012, the band soldiers on with original guitarist Michael Wilton and bassist Eddie Jackson, joined by the talented Todd La Torre on vocals, Mike Stone on guitar, and Casey Grillo on drums. Ryche’s musicianship is sharper than ever, and after treating the audience to a brand new song, they played many of their hits, including numbers from the ever popular Operation Mindcrime and Empire albums .

queensryche 2023 tour review

The volume for their set was exceptionally loud, enough to send fans looking for earplugs, and some to leave prematurely. I did not encounter the singer, but interactions with the rest of the band were amicable, except for their road manager, who was rather demanding and unsavory to deal with.

queensryche 2023 tour review

Though this marks the end of the Rocktober concert series, I am sure there will be more of these “heaven and hell” type concerts in Ohio and hopefully elsewhere. If you see any coming up, please take the time and effort to make a road trip out to support our christian metal bands. They will appreciate it, and as much as I’ve enjoyed spending time with Saint, Whitecross, and Sacred Warrior, I know that you’ll enjoy the bands too.

Queensryche's new album finds them trudging where they once soared

Art-metal veterans queensryche dial it in on album number 16, digital noise alliance.

Queensryche: Digital Noise Alliance cover art

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

Queensrÿche are a long way from metal’s cutting edge in 2022. This fourth album since the acrimonious departure of original singer Geoff Tate is solidly dramatic and inarguably proficient, but the inspiration and imagination that fuelled 1986’s Rage For Order and 1988’s state-of-the-art Operation: Mindcrime are long gone.

Digital Noise Alliance ’s title is only marginally clunkier than the tracks on it. Mid-paced plodders Lost In Sorrow and Nocturnal Light find the band trudging where they once soared.

Vocalist Todd La Torre hits the big notes, but he lacks the range and control of the mercurial Tate. The stately Forest is a high point, largely because it sounds like it’s been beamed in from 1990. But unfortunately any good work is undone by a grisly, dads-at-the-wedding-reception-style cover of Billy Idol‘s Rebel Yell .

Maybe it’s unfair to compare Digital Noise Alliance to albums that are more than 30 years old, but they’re the benchmark to which Queensrÿche will forever be held. Almost inevitably, they’ve fallen way short here.

The Prog Report

Queensrÿche announce ‘The Origins Tour,’ will perform both their classic self-titled EP and ‘The Warning’

queensryche 2023 tour review

For the first time ever, Queensrÿche will be performing both classic releases in their entirety as part of ‘The Origins Tour.’

Although Queensrÿche would score multi-platinum albums and hit singles over their career, their fans have developed an undeniable love for the group’s early releases – when they helped trailblaze a style of rock that combined elements of metal and prog. And for the first time ever, Queensrÿche will be performing both classic releases in their entirety as part of ‘The Origins Tour.’

Launching on March 22, 2024 in Houston, TX at Hell’s Heroes Festival and running until May 12 in Ft. Meyers, FL, ‘The Origins Tour’ will see Queensrÿche – singer Todd La Torre, guitarists Michael Wilton and Mike Stone, bassist Eddie Jackson, and drummer Casey Grillo – joined on most dates by another highly respected/influential band that also launched in the ’80s, Armored Saint.

Tickets will go on sale on Friday, November 10 at 10:00am local, and can be purchased via this link: https://bnds.us/8vkhdd

“We are thrilled to bring to you The Origins Tour!,’ says La Torre. “This will be the first time in Queensrÿche’s history that the EP and ‘The Warning’ will be performed live in their entirety. And to make this an even more stellar tour, we are so excited that our great friends and legendary metallers Armored Saint will be joining us as direct support. We are all proud to bring you this touring package and we can’t wait to see you on the road.”

Originally formed in 1982, Queensrÿche became one of rock’s top bands on the strength of such albums as 1986’s ‘Rage for Order,’ 1988’s ‘Operation: Mindcrime,’ and 1990’s ‘Empire,’ the latter of which spawned the hit single/video “Silent Lucidity.” The band continues to be successful to this day – as evidenced by their latest studio offering in 2022 (and 16th overall), ‘Digital Noise Alliance.’

And La Torre is especially looking forward to these upcoming special performances. “Join us for this unique and very special experience, as we celebrate the origins of Queensrÿche. Take hold!”

CINCINNATI, Ohio (WOUB) – Seattle’s Queensrÿche has been a key force in taking the classic metal sound of bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and pushing it to its musical and conceptual limits, focusing on virtuosic guitar work, soaring melodies and high concept lyricism.

Since 1982, the band has released 16 studio albums, including 1988’s iconic Operation: Mindcrime and 1990’s Empire. (more…)

ALBUM REVIEW: “”Digital Noise Alliance” sees Queensrÿche succeed in returning to the progressive metal of its beginnings

t’s been almost a decade since Todd La Torre took the microphone from Geoff Tate at Queensrÿche. ARMORED SAINT ‘s most recent studio album, Punching The Sky , was released in 2020. The critically lauded full-length hit worldwide record charts including #4 on Billboard’s Current Hard Music Albums chart, #6 on the Top New Artists chart, #16 on the Top Independent Albums chart, and #17 on the Current Rock Albums chart upon its first week of release.

A diverse, attitude-drenched collection, the record offers everything the band’s faithful have come to expect from them while pushing their signature sound forward. Exploding to life with the crunchy, rousing “ Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants ” and not letting up until the closing ruthless riff of “ Never You Fret ,” the record is possessed of an urgency and vigor which very much places it in the right now, but could only be the work of bassist Joey Vera, guitarists Phil Sandoval and Jeff Duncan, drummer Gonzo Sandoval, and vocalist John Bush. The record also features a few guest musicians further expanding its sonic palette, the whole thing kicking off with the sound of Uilleann Pipes, Vera finding player Patrick D’Arcy in Los Angeles and recruiting him to the cause. Guns ‘N’ Roses keyboardist Dizzy Reed also contributes, Vera giving both him and D’Arcy some general directions and letting them loose, both of them delivering strong performances. The band’s own Gonzo Sandoval plays an American Indian flute on “ Never You Fret ” – a first for ARMORED SAINT and their drummer. Also Jacob Ayala, the son of a childhood friend who is a drum major in high school, added some marching snare on one of the tracks, which really stands out.
