Volendam and Marken: Visit in a Day Trip from Amsterdam

Volendam and Marken: Visit in a Day Trip from Amsterdam

Windmills, cheese, wooden clog shoes, boat & bike rides, traditional colorful houses: it doesn’t get more Dutch than in Volendam, Marken, and Broek in Waterland. Visit the Waterland area on a day trip from Amsterdam or, even better, spend the night there and discover these beautiful villages in the Netherlands by (electric) bicycle! Here’s a complete one or two-day guide to Volendam and Marken.

Volendam, a village situated on the Markermeer (lake), is well-known for its fishing culture and traditional costumes. The center of Volendam is a dam with cute houses, fishmongers, and souvenir shops, located only 30 minutes by public transport from Amsterdam . It is recommended to visit early due to the popularity of Volendam.

Things to do in Volendam

Spend two to three hours in Volendam, wandering around the center where you are able to try on the traditional costumes, visit a cheese-making factory, or eat fish. Once finished, stroll down towards “Doolhof”, the oldest part of the Volendam. Here, buildings are built at random, not following the structure of the streets. A true maze!

Here are all your hotel options in Volendam.

Get to Know Dutch Cheese

In the Cheese Factory of Volendam, you will learn the process and history of cheese-making, a product that the Netherlands is incredibly famous for. The tours are held in various languages. Additionally, buy a delicious, tasty cheese to take home or snack from!

Alternatively, visit a real cheese farm just outside of Volendam named Jacobs Hoeve. It is easy to reach by electric bike or scooter. (explained further down the article)

Volendam and Marken: Visit in a Day Trip from Amsterdam

Fishing Village Volendam

Volendam is a small fishing village, so if you eat fish, you have to try the traditional ‘Haring’ (Herring) or the tasty battered chunks of fish named ‘Kibbeling’. You can get fish anywhere on the main streets of Volendam.

Do you like fish? Visit Smit Bokkum, the traditional Eel Smokehouse, and learn everything about this craft.

Rent an Electric Bike or Scooter in Volendam

One of the best things to do is explore Volendam and Marken with your own transport! To explore the villages, rent electric ‘fat bikes’ or electric scooters at Rent&Event . They are located in the center of Volendam.

Have an incredible time roaming free in the villages and through the countryside, home to windmills, cows, sheep, and places you cannot reach with public transport. Rent&Event advises cycling routes and gives out a map with their best tips.

Rent&Event also delivers the electric Fatbikes and Scooters to locations throughout the Netherlands!

Ferry from Volendam to Marken

After exploring Volendam, hop on the ferry to Marken. The ‘Marken Express’ departs every 45 minutes from the harbor in the center of Volendam. After this beautiful 30-minute boat ride, you will ride across the Markermeer lake towards Marken.

Even better is that you can bring your bike on the ferry to Marken and bike back from there to Volendam in about 90 minutes (16 kilometers). This is a beautiful ride! The ferry departs every 30 to 45 minutes, from 11:00 AM from Volendam until the last boat at 5:00 PM from Marken.

Marken is a tiny village with colorful wooden houses, drawbridges, and picturesque corners located on a former peninsula. Marken Island has been connected to the mainland via a dam since 1959. The easiest way to get there from Volendam is by taking the ferry.

Marken Village

Marken is an authentic, typical Dutch village. Based on looks, it seems like time has stood still here. Discover a quiet little town with beautiful wooden houses, narrow alleys, and drawbridges – incredibly picturesque!

Also visit: The Windmills of Zaanse Schans

You might find houses on wooden piles; this used to be necessary, as during high tide, the water rushed over the former island. After the construction of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, the flooding stopped.

Tip: Visit the Wooden Shoe Factory in Marken. The clog maker demonstrates how he transforms a block of wood into a traditional wooden clog.

Marken Lighthouse

Besides a stroll through Marken, the lighthouse is another great site to visit. Paard van Marken Lighthouse (Horse of Marken) is situated on the eastern tip of the peninsula. You can either walk 35 minutes from town or use your bike. The location of the lighthouse offers a great view of the Markermeer.

Also visit: Rotterdam, a must-see city in the Netherlands!

Your Feet in the Sand at a Beach Club

Strandvier Beachclub is a fantastic spot to get your feet in the sand and relax after your bike ride. Bring your swimsuit for a fresh splash in the waters of the Gouwzee. They have a menu with delicious drinks and snacks so you can gain new energy before cycling back to Volendam.

Monnickendam

Cycle through the old city center of Monnickendam. The scenic historical center around the harbor is a must-visit, plus it has far fewer tourists compared to Volendam. Plan to spend an hour in Monnickendam.

Also visit: On your way back to Volendam, (and if you still have time) visit the cheese farm Jacobs Hoeve which is located here .

A Day on a Whisper Boat (You HAVE to do this!)

In order to experience the Waterland region at its best, it’s advisable to spend one night in or around Volendam so you can sail a boat the following day. Here’s how:

Theetuin Overleek

Theetuin Overleek is a tea garden. A farm idyllically located on the water surrounded by countryside with sheep and cows, and far away from the cities. This family-run farm serves delicious homemade cakes and pies.

Whisper Boats

Optionally, Theetuin Overleek rents out ‘whisper’ boats. A small electric boat, which doesn’t need much skill to drive yourself. Have a picnic on board or at one of the picnic spots on the route while you sail along the grassland with grazing cows and through authentic villages like Broek in Waterland.

best things to do netherlands rent boat

Theetuin Overleek provides you with a two (45 EUR) or three-hour (57.5 EUR) route, and it honestly is one of the best things to do in the Netherlands!

Broek in Waterland

Broek in Waterland is one of the most beautiful villages in the Netherlands , and it has a special history. The village was home to a woman named Neeltje Pater, one of the richest people in the world because she owned two important ships during the VOC times.

Nowadays, it’s a beautiful small village with pastel-colored wooden houses, with just a couple of thousand residents. We highly recommend docking with your boat for a quick stroll through the streets!

Volendam to Marken

The ferry between Volendam and Marken is, without a doubt, the best way to get to Marken. Alternatively, take bus 316 from Volendam and change to bus 315 at Broek in Waterland in order to get to Marken by bus.

Visiting Volendam and Edam by Bicycle: A Day Trip from Amsterdam

Last modified on March 9th, 2023 at 21:18

Amsterdam is a vibrant, cosmopolitan and progressive city with a lot to offer—museums for art-lovers and history buffs, world-class cuisine for foodies, party-till-you-drop nightlife for young college students and a million pretty alleyways and canals for just about everyone else.

Yet, while Amsterdam’s popularity is well-deserved, travelers who fail to venture farther afield are missing out on some of Europe’s most charming landscapes.

Merely minutes from Amsterdam, the countryside is awash with lush green pastures, lopsided houses and quaint brick churches. These rural areas just outside the city limits, make for a perfect day trip from Amsterdam.

BIKING AROUND THE NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands is flat and compact–a perfect combination for those who wish to explore the Amsterdam parks and canals on two wheels. Even outside the city, paved trails traverse through the surrounding farmland—creating a tangled web of paths that link the surrounding villages.

On previous trips to the Netherlands, I’d biked to the village of Durgerdam and to the open-air folk museum of Zaanse Schans. Both day trips from Amsterdam allowed me to become familiar with the network of cycling trails surrounding the Dutch capital and solidified my confidence in navigating the countryside without the aide of Google Maps.

windmill-dutch-countryside-vollendam

Thus, on my third bike trip from Amsterdam, I used my newly-acquired navigation skills and set out on a 45km bike ride to Volendam and Edam–two postcard perfect villages where time seems to have stood still.

VOLENDAM VILLAGE

Volendam is an attractive fishing village on the shores of Lake Markermeer. The town’s harbor is speckled with classic sailing vessels and flanked by rows of brick houses that date back to the 17th Century.

volendam-waterfront-netherlands

Due to its popularity as a day trip from Amsterdam, Volendam’s waterfront is packed to the brim with tourists. The town’s waterside promenade is chock-a-block full of kitschy souvenir shops and restaurants serving traditional meals of eel and pickled herring. Interspersed with these stores and eateries are costume shops where one can pay to dress up and take photos in traditional Dutch clothing.

I even found the exact shop where I dressed in wooden clogs and a flowery smock for an awkward family portrait over thirteen years ago.

volendam-day trip from Amsterdam

Despite Volendam’s kitschy shops and tourist-trap atmosphere, there is no denying that the town is worthy of the hundreds of visitors it attracts every day. With its picturesque rows of houses, its views over Lake Markermeer and its boat-lined waterfront, Volendam looks like a village straight out of a postcard.

EDAM: A CHEESE-LOVER’S TOWN

From Volendam, I hopped back on my bike and headed 3km down the road toward the village of Edam. There, I parked my bike and wandered along the town’s canals–allowing myself to be charmed by my surroundings. Like a miniature Amsterdam, rows and rows of narrow brick houses line Edam’s streets and canals.

While Volendam was brimming with tourists, I was surprised to find that I had the equally-picturesque Edam largely to myself.

edam day trip from amsterdam

Once an industrious shipyard, today Edam’s claim to fame is its word-renowned cheese.

Historically, local farmers would gather at the town’s cheese market to sell their produce. Although the market closed down in the 1920s, re-enactments of the cheese market occur every Wednesday in Edam’s main square.

edam-cheese-shop-netherlands-day trip from Amsterdam

Visiting Amsterdam’s surrounding countryside is like flipping through a storybook of Dutch clichés. It is in these landscapes that much of what is unique to the region–its windmills, its narrow brick houses, its cow-spotted pastures and its crisscrossing bike lanes–can be found in abundance.

While most people who visit Volendam and Edam choose to explore the area by car or bus, I’m happy that I toured Amsterdam’s surroundings on two wheels rather than four. For in this tiny, compact country where cycling is a way of life, I can think of no better way to travel.

Description

Zaanse schans tour from amsterdam.

Explore true Holland with this amazing tour through  Zaanse Schans , Volendam , Marken and Edam . Historical pearls dotted across the countryside of the Netherlands.

Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken Tour

Your journey starts off at the Zaanse Schans where you’ll see plethora of beautifully preserved Dutch windmills. You’ll have ample time for taking pictures. The stops are located in the so called Waterland area. Where you get to explore some of Holland’s most  picturesque villages: Volendam, Edam & Marken.

Volendam, Edam & Marken Tour

Walk past historic locations in the centre of Edam such as the world famous Cheese Market square. After Edam taste some locally produced typical Dutch cheese at an actual cheese producer close to Volendam. At this location the local cheese master shows you how those famous Gouda en Edam cheeses are actually produced.

Next to the cheese producer stands a little clog factory. Here you’ll learn everything about those famous wooden Dutch shoes. The last stop of this wide-ranging Zaanse Schans Tour is a intimate fishermen town called Marken.

Feel like you’re walking in the 17th century is you explore the harbor and the Protestant church. This wide-ranging tour is something that you simply cannot afford to miss during your short stay in Amsterdam or the Netherlands.

Windmill Village  Zaanse Schans Tour

Zaanse Schans is a working and inhabited neighbourhood in the Dutch city Zaandam which also functions as an open air windmill museum. Between 1961 and 1974 old structures from all over the Zaanstreek region were transported to this little  picturesque  neighbourhood. It has the best preserved collection of historic houses and windmills.

The windmills are in complete original state and are operated by the locals with passion and enthusiasm. At the Zaanse Schans you can explore the insides of the windmills at will where you can see the impressive massive rotating parts first hand. Besides being a real educational experience this is the perfect place to shoot some scenic Dutch windmill pictures!

Edam Cheese Market Square

During the Middle Ages in the Netherlands, the Edam cheese market functioned as the city hub. It was here that local farmers brought their freshly produced cheeses. They were weighed at this location and sold and would then be exported globally.

Back in in 1520 Edam was bestowed the rights to organising this type of market and after 50 years they also managed to get the rights to cheese weighing for all time. Those all times rights however ended in 1922 as cheese was then produced on an industrial scale in factories. However, Edam holds a historic reenactment of this famous market every Wednesday during the summer.

In the 13th century, the small fishing town of Marken got completely separated from the Dutch mainland. What followed was centuries of isolation of the local inhabitants. They survived by fishing from the Zuider-sea and eating bread. The harbour of Marken was constructed in the 19th century to the Marken fleet of typical fishing boats; the botters.

Only as recent as 1959 Marken was finally reconnected with the Dutch mainland by building an embankment. Since then Marken has been a peninsula. Even though it has been reconnected Marken hasn’t lost its authentic quality and spirit. This Dutch town is beautifully preserved.

The tides and frequent flooding forced the local inhabitants to build their wooden houses in clusters. Because Marken was flooded on a regular basis in the past all the homes there were built on earth mounds (werfs) and then on social mounds called “terpen” in Dutch.

People also built houses on poles: these have now been closed to form under-houses. This is the only place in the world where you get to see these beautiful historic little houses.

Visitors can explore the Marken Museum, which is housed in a traditional Marken home, or take a stroll through the Marken Heritage Park. There are also several churches and windmills to see, and the Marken Lighthouse offers stunning views of the surrounding area. In addition, Marken has a number of excellent restaurants and cafes, making it the perfect place to relax and soak up the Dutch culture.

Hi, I'm Gerrit

I enjoy sharing useful tips about the beauty of this county.

Are you thinking of a day trip from Amsterdam to Volendam, Netherlands?

You’re in the right place. I’ve visited Volendam several times, both privately and with work outings. I’ve recently been again (in July 2023) and had a classic photo in traditional costumes taken for the first time (result below).

Secretly, I loved it. Promise me one thing, do the same when you can go there. It’s a must-try traditional Dutch experience.

A visit to Volendam is on many people’s itineraries and is an easy day tour from the capital.

Read my article about the best things to do in Volendam to learn exactly what I did and the things I would recommend.

This article is all about how to get from Amsterdam to Volendam . So when you’re wondering how to get there, here are four great options:

  • By Bus (Public Transport)
  • With a Tour (including my recommendations)
  • By Bicycle (really a fun option, details in the post)
  • By Car (including tips)

If you’re short on time:

I recommend this small group bus tour if you prefer traveling with a group. Since it includes not only Volendam but also Marken, Edam, and the Zaanse Schans. The group is smaller than regular tours, customers are happy with the time management of the operator, and lunch is included at the restaurant I’ve eaten myself (and I liked it!).

If you prefer to travel on your own by bus , then take bus line 316 from Amsterdam Central Station. I recommend getting an Amsterdam + Region Travel Ticket (ARTT) because it includes all the area’s bus, train, and metro journeys (including the airport and the Zaanse Schans).

If you travel by car , take the A10 ring road and then road N247 to Volendam. Parking is free.

But keep reading for more tips .

Volendam is a tiny yet beautiful fishing village just north of Amsterdam. It’s also very touristy because it’s heavily marketed. This shows most at the harbor, with all the tourist signs and even a Dunkin Donuts shop. But don’t let that stop you.

This is the area to get your classic Volendam photo in costume taken. And to get away from it, stroll behind the busy street to wander into the authentic Doolhof neighborhood. The name Doolhof means Maze in Dutch, and that it truly is. But don’t worry: it’s that small, you can’t get lost.

If you’re interested in how to get from Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans , another classic day trip from Amsterdam you can read my guide about it by clicking on the link.

Table of Contents

How to get from amsterdam to volendam by bus.

Get from Amsterdam to Volendam by bus 316.

Bus number 316 is a reliable and safe way to travel to Volendam. The bus journey takes 30 minutes. Busses depart from the Amsterdam Centraal Station bus station (at IJ-side), which is the station’s north side, towards the ferry and the water, not the city center exit. Buses operate with a frequency of four times an hour , making this bus service highly convenient.

The Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket is an excellent choice, covering all your travel within Amsterdam itself and trips to other nearby towns, like the Zaanse Schans. And transportation to and from the airport.

It’s your all-in-one train and bus ticket . You can choose a day ticket or a multi-day ticket. The longer the card is valid, the lower the price per day.

If you’re planning only one trip, you can check in and out on the bus using a contactless debit or credit card (or Apple Pay/Google Wallet) to pay your fare. An overseas card will work.

I advise getting a Wise Multi-Currency Debit Card to save the most money. This is the cheapest way to exchange currency . If you click the link, you’ll find my article on how to use it, why it saves you money, and where to get it.

Locals tip: Remember to check out when leaving the bus to ensure you’re not overcharged. Visitors so often forget this. You tap your card when you enter AND when you exit the bus.

If you also like to visit Marken , you can easily travel by bus and ferry . Just take bus 316, then the Ferry ( Marken by ferry is only 30 minutes away), and from there, you can travel to Amsterdam by bus 315 (to Amsterdam Noord), where you take a quick metro trip back to Central Station. It’s a fun day-trip.

Locals tip: Buying a ticket from a machine or the bus driver is a waste of your money since that will be much more expensive than just tapping in and out with your bank card. If you’ve read somewhere else that you need an OV-chipcard: that is not true. That’s outdated information.

PS: The I amsterdam Card (Amsterdam city card ) only provides free transportation in the city of Amsterdam with the city operator called GVB. This does not include regional transportation . So it’s of no use for traveling to villages outside the city.

Visit Volendam With A Guided Tour From Amsterdam

A tourist taking a photo of the Doolhof area in Volendam.

I get you. Sometimes, you want somebody else to care for things. I have a few recommendations for you:

If you prefer a private tour, consider booking me as your private driver and tour guide . I will collect you from your Amsterdam accommodation and take you on a tour that includes both villages. We’ll spend about 6 hours together. It’s a white glove experience where you don’t have to worry about anything. A private tour by me of 6 hours, including transportation by car, costs €699 + tickets. This is for up to four persons.

Are you looking for a lower-priced option? Then, I recommend this small group tour to Volendam and Marken . You’ll visit all the area’s highlights, including Volendam, Marken, Edam, and the Zaanse Schans . Lunch, the stroopwafel experience, the ferry, and much more are all included. This is the most inclusive tour available.

The best tour at the most affordable price is this Marken, Volendam, and Edam Full-Day Tour from Amsterdam . This will be with a big bus and a large group , but the price is almost half.

Lunch on this tour is at your own expense. Make sure to opt for the all-inclusive option (for a small surcharge). Otherwise, the boat will be excluded, as would the wooden clog factory demonstration.

Private Tour to Volendam

You can also book me as your private tour guide to Volendam . I offer a complete day trip from Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans windmills, Volendam, Marken (including the boat tour), and Edam. For more information, check my private tour page . Note that I have limited availability . I can only accept one customer per week.

Cycling to Volendam (and Marken)

Holland bicycle lane.

If you’re up for a day of healthy exercise, cycling to Volendam is a fantastic option (or if you have your driver’s license with you, opt for a scooter).

You’ll find that Amsterdam’s biking culture extends well beyond the city. Bicycle lanes separated from motorized vehicles are everywhere.

The journey, approximately 55km (roughly 34 miles) round trip , can seem daunting. But fear not, if you rent an E-Bike or a scooter, the battery/motor does most of the work for you, making the trip a breeze.

Another unique aspect of the Netherlands is a system called Fietsknooppunten , or cycling junctions. It’s a network of junctions, each labeled with a number, and cycling paths connect these numbered junctions. At every junction, there is a map to visualize where you are and where you want to go.

I recommend a route that takes you from Amsterdam to Volendam, then on the ferry to the picturesque town of Marken, and back to Amsterdam via postcard villages like Durgerdam.

Just follow this route : 5, 52, 46, 47, 44, 78, 79, 77, 52, 51, 99, 56, 55, 2, 1, 38, 37, 36, 5. You start at point 5 from the backside of Amsterdam Central Station, and then it’s as easy as following the signs to 52; once there, you go to 46. It’s that easy.

I recommend using this booking tool to find the lowest bicycle rental prices. They’re unique in that they also include scooters. The prices I find there are much lower than going to Macbike , for example.

Getting to volendam by car.

Volendam Exit from the A10 ring road towards the N247.

Driving to Volendam from Amsterdam is possible, but I would not recommend it if you stay in the city. The city’s notorious traffic (holdups), trams, different traffic rules than at home, and high parking charges make renting a car less than ideal for most visitors.

I only recommend travel to Volendam by car , if you have it with you already. Or if you plan a longer road trip into the country.

If you’re interested in renting a car, I recommend picking it up from the airport since it’s easier traffic from there.

Driving outside Amsterdam can be busy, but it’s easy too. I always find the lowest car rental prices with Rentalcars , but you can also rent your car from Discover Cars . Why not compare prices from both for the best deal?

It’s about a 30-minute drive. The distance is 20 kilometers or around 12 miles. It’s an easy drive. The roads are well-maintained, and the route is clearly signposted . From Amsterdam, take the A10 Ringroad north and the Volendam exit. Road N247 takes you in a straight line to the village. You need the same road to get to Marken.

And the best part? Parking is free , a rare perk in the Netherlands 😢. There are plenty of parking lots in town close to the attractions. Just follow the P signs once you get there.

On arrival in volendam.

Arriving on the ferry between Volendam and Marken.

When you get to the Dutch fishing village Volendam , your trip into the charm of the Dutch countryside begins (but also the tourist craze because this is a popular tourist destination).

In the center of Volendam, you’ll find the harbor with traditional fishing boats, Volendam’s photographer shops for your costume photos , a cheese factory (read cheese shop, but they have some good Dutch cheese from Reypenaer), many souvenir shops, but also the lovely Volendam Museum, and the Maze area.

For a full rundown on what to do, check out my detailed guide on “ Volendam and Marken Day Trip 15 Attractions Trap Or Fun? 🐟 ” for a comprehensive list of my recommended activities.

It’s easy to combine a visit with the former Marken Island. You can get there easily by traveling via the Marken Express ferry. You book your tickets below.

Frequently Asked Questions About Getting to Volendam

There are several tours to choose from, but I recommend this small group tour to Volendam and Marken . It’s a bit more expensive, but I like that the group size is smaller and (a tasty) lunch is included. They’re also punctual, something I appreciate. Above I also share tips for a lower-priced good alternative and a more expensive white glove experience with me as your private guide.

Where can I park in Volendam?

Then you drive along the N247 until Monnickendam, where you exit for Marken. The latitude & longitude coordinates of Marken are 52.45904520657749, 5.106292740333424.

By offering this honest guide and giving you four ways to get to Volendam, I hope I offered you the tools to decide whether you want to go and, if so, how you’ll want to get there. Whether you’re venturing out by car, bus, or bike, have safe travels, and enjoy the charm of Volendam!
