  • MS Expedition

expedition cruise ship

At a nimble 345 feet in length, with a capacity of 134 guests, the MS Expedition is an ideal vessel to ply polar waters. Her large outside decks offer panoramic views and her cabins are some of the largest in the industry, all boasting an ocean-facing window or porthole and private en-suite facilities.

Why Sail Aboard the MS Expedition

Choose the MS Expedition for one of the fastest, safest ships sailing the polar regions and for her large common spaces and viewing decks. Also choose her for a seamless expedition/operations experience, as the MS Expedition is operator-owned. The Expedition’s focus on top-of-the line safety, comfort and ability to meet the demands of polar travel, makes her one of the world’s leading polar expedition cruise ships. Her forward-looking sonar reduces the risk of grounding on uncharted reefs. This ship is equipped with new and regularly serviced lifeboats and life rafts. Its four partially enclosed lifeboats provide capacity for all passengers and crew. In addition, she has full cold-weather immersion suits for all. A 2009 renovation resulted in a $13 million refurbishment, and a $10 million upgrade in 2015 gave the Expedition new engines and a faster cruising speed.

AdventureSmith Explorations has been aboard the Expedition firsthand, and can help you compare the Expedition with other polar expedition ships that offer Antarctica cruises . Read our dedicated MS Expedition Ship Review written by one of our specialists, or consult this page further for a detailed description of the Expedition, including ship specs, deck plan, cabin images and a photo gallery. We’ve been aboard many Antarctica ships and can be your ultimate resource to discover if this is the best ship choice for your travel needs.

Sustainability Aboard MS Expedition

Reusable bags on board enable beach cleanups while exploring polar shorelines, as part of Expedition’s Marine Debris program. A compactor on board the ship efficiently collects trash over the ship’s sailing season; the trash is then delivered to Svalbard to be recycled.

Common Areas Aboard MS Expedition

Unlike many expedition ships, where public space is at a premium, the Expedition has multiple large public areas, all providing superior views to enjoy during sea crossings and in between land excursions. Enjoy sweeping panoramas from the ship’s 360-degree upper decks, while a raised observation platform provides a great vantage point from which to spot unique wildlife and the large aft deck offers additional viewing options and hosts a sunny day barbecue.

Unlike many other ships, the Expedition also offers breathtaking views from its interior so passengers can relax in the warmth and comfort of the dining room, lounge or pub without being cut off from the remarkable environment. The Lonely Planet Library is stocked with iPads, the ship’s daily newspaper, books on the flora and fauna of the polar regions and an extensive selection of Lonely Planet guidebooks. The Discovery Lounge comfortably seats all passengers at once, providing an inviting space to take in on-ship lectures, briefings and recaps. The Polar Bear Pub offers a cozy spot to unwind and reflect and also provides music most nights and a wide selection of beverages and entertaining bartenders serving them up. The gym features state-of-the-art equipment alongside a soothing sauna.

Other common area highlights include a heated mud room, gift shop, medical clinic and a computer room with internet where available (additional cost).

Dining Aboard MS Expedition

A diversity of gourmet international cuisines are prepared and catered by professional chefs. Dining is casual, tables are unassigned and the Albatross Dining Room is capable of seating the full complement of passengers at one time. There is always a selection of different meals available and vegetarians will find plenty of options. Breakfast and lunch are buffets while dinner is served plated. Special dietary requirements, including celiac disease, can be accommodated with advance notice. Coffee, tea and water are all provided free of charge, with special afternoon tea service and snacks and coffee sourced from a partnership with Mi Cafecito. All other beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, can be purchased in the dining room, pub or lounge.

Crew & Guides Aboard MS Expedition

The ship’s crew is dedicated to ensuring every journey exceeds travelers’ expectations. From the Expedition captain who has successfully navigated over 100 ice cruises, to the ship’s expedition leader with over 30 years experience in polar expeditions, they are amongst the most experienced and skilled in their field. Experts in everything from geology to marine biology and photography to polar history, the members of the Expedition team are always eager to share their infectious passion for the plants, animals and historic figures of the polar regions. A 10:1 passenger-to-guide ratio means more on-hand experts, deeper access and greater understanding throughout the voyage.

Activities Aboard MS Expedition

The large fleet of Zodiacs are launched from a special platform, ensuring comfort and ease of accessibility for Zodiac cruises and shore landings. Citizen science opportunities abound on all of Expedition’s departures, encouraging guests to participate in key sample collections. The Expedition offers kayaks and camping gear for off-ship adventures. Swipe ID cards enable easy, swift access to the ship, with the entire passenger complement only requiring 30 minutes to load or unload from the Zodiacs. On board, the Expedition’s crew create a fun atmosphere with activities including game nights; performances by the resident musician; and an “Embrace the Bizarre” night featuring the crew band, strobe lights and a conga line. The onboard costume closet encourages guest participation in the fun. And for the adventurous wedding planner, an added-cost wedding package offers the option to be married by the captain.

MS Expedition Cabins & Deck Plan

Top-of-the-line cabins provide a variety of affordable doubles, triples and quads, as well as higher-end double cabins and luxurious suites. Dedicated single cabins are also available in category 2 and higher. Hear It from Travelers Who Have Sailed Aboard the Expedition

Antarctica is an out of the world experience. It is nothing like anywhere. Neither was there an experience like this before nor can there be similar one after.

This was an unbelievable trip!! I can't recommend this destination, itinerary, company (yours and G Adventures), the ship, the crew highly enough!!!

Loved it from start to finish!!! From the house staff to the expedition leaders, everyone was a pleasure, informative and helpful. The itinerary was indescribable. This was a trip that I will not soon forget.

Thanks for such a great trip! The caliber of this trip was outstanding! From the moment we were greeted by all of the crew as we came on the ship, our voyage was magical. We were treated so well and enjoyed so much. I am so impressed with not only the educational background of the expedition crew, but also how personable, helpful, and friendly they all were.

Everything went great from start to finish - Crossing the circle, kayaking (I did six times), eight total landings and continent landings (2), polar plunge.

My favorite experience were the zodiac rides through the ice fields and landings in the penguin rockeries.

I enjoyed all the penguins and seals the most. I chose this trip for places visited, length of time at places, ship engine and size.

The trip exceeded my expectations! The Expedition ship was extremely well equipped for adventure.

Overall trip experience was great, since it had an equal measure of all components-comfortable stay, good food, insights on the continent, well organised landings and great care taken by the expedition head and his team. All the landings were unique in their own way, had different elements of surprise every time. Whale watching from the ship-out of the world experience.

Accommodations Review

Accommodations were convenient and well maintained. Only the camping tent could have been a little larger to accommodate two campers.

Crew & Guides Review

The enthusiasm and professionalism was par excellence. Alex the team leader was very knowledgeable about the continent and its various facets and his alertness and information got us more benefits from the trip. All others were equally competent and knowledgeable. Lyn, Osi, Gerard, Scott, Phil, Mike and others-each had so much energy and enthusiasm to share their knowledge, help and guide us that made your trip so memorable.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

All info was given in detail. There were regular emails from Nick which helped me a lot. The change in airline schedule was informed in advance so that alternates could be booked. The info about ground transport was also useful.

Traveler Advice

Antarctica is an out of the world experience. It is nothing like anywhere. Neither was there an experience like this before nor can there be similar one after. Anyone who like nature should visit it! Do not have any doubt or inhibition, everything will be smooth. Enjoy and soak in the experience as it seeps in!

This was an unbelievable trip!! I can't recommend this destination, itinerary, company (yours and G Adventures), the ship, the crew highly enough!!! Thank you so much for helping me put this trip together. It was the trip of a lifetime for sure.

The ship isn't super fancy, but it was much nicer than I expected! The dining hall/meals are wonderful, there is space to be alone when you want to be or hang out with a group of new friends. The hotel staff on the ship is excellent, too.

Meals Review

Great selections, multiple options for picky eaters, and the quality was much better than I expected for an excursion ship. Very impressed and pleased!

The crew made all the difference on this trip. I knew I was in capable hands and had fun getting to learn from them and know them during the trip. I wouldn't have wanted to travel with anyone else to Antarctica! Can't say enough good things about them. They are amazing. Jonathan was the ideal Expedition Leader. Mark and Alex did an excellent job with kayaking, as did Gerard with camping. Scott's history lectures were fascinating. And I could go on and on about all of them...

Tiffany was an awesome resource leading up to the trip, and she even held my hand when I needed it to make a decision about which company to choose!!--and she did an excellent job with the directions she steered me!

GO NOW!! Don't wait! You will not regret it. It will be the most amazing, rewarding adventure.

Loved it from start to finish!!! From the house staff to the expedition leaders, everyone was a pleasure, informative and helpful. The itinerary was indescribable. This was a trip that I will not soon forget. The landings were my favorite part, particularly Neko Harbor & Port Lockroy. The scenery and wildlife were amazing. Being 10ft away from a whale wasn’t so bad either.

Our cabin was wonderful! We were upgraded to a level 6 cabin (from 3) and it was amazing! We really appreciated this! Camping on the continent was an experience that I will never forget. In the morning, as I opened my eyes, a brown Skua flew over my head :-). Despite this being a rugged experience, the 3 expedition crew members made sure we were being taken care of and were there to give us support the whole way.

I liked all of the plant-based options, especially the vegan/vegetarian soups. I also liked the "comfort foods". More ethnic foods, like Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, and Mexican would be appreciated.

Itinerary Review

We love kayaking!! I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone taking this cruise. I also liked going to Port Lockroy (I would have liked a bit more time there, though), and hiking along the volcano and Whaler's Bay. Seeing all of the wildlife, especially the Weddell Seal when we were kayaking and all of the penguins and other birds as we were hiking and kayaking was fabulous!

Pippa was a wonderful expedition leader. She was so friendly and personable, but also so knowledgeable and savvy in her work. I really liked getting to know her and am so appreciative of her taking the time to write on our map the itinerary that we took. I also found Saskia, Alexis, Nick, Chloe, Paolo, and George to be exceptional in their skills and knowledge base.

Taylor, our tour navigator was the best! She was very helpful and persistent with encouraging us to get our paperwork in, but she was not at all nagging.

The packing list we received was right on, except "waterproof gloves" should have been emphasized. Follow the packing list and withhold expectations, but go into the trip with excitement. Buy the kayaking and camping excursions. Definitely do the polar plunge! Keep your mouth closed and your ears open and you will be in for an amazing experience!

Everything went great from start to finish - Crossing the circle, kayaking (I did six times), eight total landings and continent landings (2), polar plunge. Few days we had great weather but few of days were like Antarctic weather which was expected. Only thing we were not able to do was the camping because of 2-3 cancellations, even though we had set the tent one day and they had to cancel the last minute. I was also able to bring my 7-iron all the way from Washington (four airports) and able to swing the golf club on the landing. Probably it was unique and nobody had tried before. So few other people I knew asked me and I let them use it after I used them and took some pictures - probably it was special for them as well. Even staff members asked me why I had brought the club and asked me whether they could use pictures for their slides. I gave them 2 golf pictures. I told them every continent I go, I play golf and since we can't play golf in Antarctica, I wanted just to swing and have the experience.

Staff members were always good and food was great. I met lot of nice people who had been to Nepal as well. Probably 50% were from Australia, then England and others were from European countries. Not many from US and Canada.

You have been very helpful to me and thanks for your support. Since I have been to Antarctica now, probably I can provide you guys some good information for future travelers. I have everything great and positive to say about my trip and dealing with You/Adventure Smith Explorations. My traveling to all seven continents now completed. Thanks again for your help. Probably, I took 1500 pictures.

  • Quest for the Antarctic Circle

The size of the group was about right and the staff was able to handle everyone effectively. All were very efficient. My favorite experience were the zodiac rides through the ice fields and landings in the penguin rockeries. The research stations could have been more interesting if we would have been provided information on the mission, perhaps in a briefing onboard. Taking 30 people at a time into the facilities was more or less a disaster. Only the few people in front could understand. I would like to know more about the research being done. Ended up using these visits to just see more wildlife. The handling of the kayaking should be done differently. It became a daily event for a few die hard kayakers. It could have been offered to more people doing fewer trips each. The crew could do nothing but sputter it is rules it is attorneys . . . etc. Sorry that was a real disappointment and the few that did it were dropping like flies after a few days. The wisdom of doing it that way escapes me.

The rooms were good for the trip. Not much time is spent in the cabin anyway. The lounge was nice it could accommodate all. The dining area was fine. The vessel was kept in tip top shape. The bridge was very interesting. All overnight stays were on boat, too late to get on the camping trip.

Great variety, excellent job. Fresh fruits and vegetables all journey long

After a few days we knew which zodiac drivers to get, those who would not mind taking reasonable personal request for a special photo. Most were pretty good.

I was disappointed to have spent money on a parka that I did not need to. The packing list was fine.

Pack enough lounge clothes for boat, and one a set or two of cold weather gear. Bring lots of money for drinks. Take LAN air if possible

I enjoyed all the penguins and seals the most. But too many days at sea. I chose this trip for places visited, length of time at places, ship engine and size.

John was just awesome.

Be prepared to take lots of videos.

Choosing the right ship

"I wasn’t sure I was the cruising type before I went, because I never fancied the larger cruise ships. But small ship cruising changed my mind. It’s a different feeling, being out there on the water. I feel like there’s a whole world of possibilities out there I’d never noticed before!" - Gwen H. (FL, USA)

The essence of small ship expedition cruising

Redefine your definition of cruise travel.

According to our limit of 500 passengers, all ships we offer are considered small. The main advantages of small expedition ships are being able to travel with a small group, often with similar focused goals, and the ability to reach places the big ships cannot visit. Expedition cruises also have a distinctive learning element and bring to mind a sense of adventure, whether it’s visiting remote settlements along the Amazon river or cruising amongst amazing ice formations in Antarctica. You will get a chance to immerse yourself in nature, discover wildlife, enjoy local cultures and learn about history. Each expedition cruise is different from the last one, as we optimize every opportunity to show you the best of a destination. Trained experts give talks on board and lead shore landings and activities. Together with the other passengers you are having a shared experience which often will create a bond after a few days on board.

expedition cruise ship

Sail beyond the reach of large ships

Small expedition ships carrying less than 500 passengers.

When choosing a ship for your next expedition cruise, pay special attention to the number of passengers that are taken on board. On destinations such as Antarctica and the Arctic only 100 people are allowed to go on a land excursion at the same time. Large ships with over 500 passengers are not allowed to make any landings at all. So being on a smaller expedition ship has its advantages, as you can spend more time exploring instead of waiting your turn to make a landing.

The luxury is in the experience

Create life-long memories.

Any cruise will take you to beautiful places. But small ship cruising is all about the experience and creating life-long memories. It takes you away from the ordinary and far beyond the roads you know. In-depth exploration of a destination is key. Go on shore excursions to experience wildlife from up close and see the world from a new perspective. Or slide into the water to dive and snorkel with the gentle giants of our ocean. We have as much fun on land as we do on the water. When you're small-ship cruising, nature comes to you.

Here Are All The Ships in American Queen Voyages Fleet

  • February 23, 2024

American Queen

After launching service in 2011, American Queen Voyages recently announced plans to cease operations .

Mostly cruising in U.S. Domestic Waters, the company currently operates a seven-ship fleet that includes classic riverboats, coastal vessels and expedition ships.

Cruise Industry News looks at the status, location, and history of every vessel in the American Queen Voyages fleet.

For a complete overview of the U.S. river market, see the 2024 USA Riverboat Market Report by Cruise Industry News.

American Queen Capacity: 436 guests Tonnage: 3,707 Year Built: 1994 Former names: N/A Current Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

Bought from MARAD in 2011 , the American Queen was the first vessel acquired by American Queen Voyages. Built in 1995, the vessel was designed by Delta Queen Steamboat Co. as a replica of the classic Mississippi paddle-wheelers .

Considered the largest river steamboat ever built, the 436-guest vessel was mostly used for cruising on the Mississippi, with itineraries also sailing to neighboring waterways, including the Cumberland, the Tennessee, and the Ohio rivers.

American Empress Capacity: 223 guests Tonnage: 5,975 Year Built: 2003 Former names: Empress of the North Current Location: Portland, Oregon

In 2013, the American Empress became the second cruise ship in American Queen Voyages’ fleet. Formerly named Empress of the North, the 2003-built vessel was acquired from MARAD for an undisclosed amount .

Originally built as a coastal ship for Majestic America Line , the 223-guest paddle-wheeler had been offering cruises in the Columbia and Snake rivers since debuting for AQV in 2014.

American Duchess Capacity: 166 guests Tonnage: 3,560 Year Built: 2017 (using the hull of 1995-built casino ship) Former names: Battendorf Capri Current Location: Amelia, Louisiana

The American Duchess entered service in mid-2017 . Using the hull of a former casino ship, the 166-guest vessel was designed as a classical paddle-wheeler, featuring all suite accommodations.

After several seasons cruising in the Mississippi River and its tributaries, the American Duchess entered an extended lay-up in early 2023 and has been out of service ever since .

American Countess Capacity: 246 guests Tonnage: 6,837 Year Built: 2020 (using the hull of 1995-built casino ship) Former names: Kanesville Queen Current Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

The newest riverboat in American Queen Voyages’ fleet, the American Countess entered service in mid-2021 . Built for the company using the hull of a former casino ship, the paddlewheeler was designed with a traditional look, reminiscent of the classic Mississippi steamboats.

During the 2023 season, the 246-guest ship offered a series of cruises to the Mississippi, the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee rivers.

Ocean Victory Capacity: 186 guests Tonnage: 8,000 Year Built: 2021 Former names: N/A Current Location: Antarctica (in service for Albatros Expeditions)

Initially chartered by Victory Cruise Lines , the Ocean Victory was integrated into the American Queen fleet when the company’s river and coastal products came together under a single brand in 2021 .

An expedition ship, the 186-guest vessel was chartered from SunStone Ships for summer programs in Alaska and Canada. The exploration itineraries were first introduced by AQV in 2022 and were set to return for a third season in 2024.
