Which St Maarten Beaches Near Cruise Port Should I Visit?

One of the most notable St Maarten beaches near the cruise port is Great Bay Beach. It’s 2.3km from the port, and only a 20-minute leisurely walk. Orient Bay Beach is also a top choice, 11km north of Philipsburg Port and a quick drive by car or taxi. These lovely beaches offer tourists various water sports activities and local cuisine. 

Here’s everything you want to know about these St Maarten beaches near cruise port for a relaxing day on the beach with various water sports, delicious food, and refreshing drinks.

Great Bay Beach

The closest (3km) beach to the Philipsburg Cruise Port is Great Bay Beach, a 3.2km stretch of beautiful white sand and clear blue water. It is one of St Maarten’s longest and most expansive beaches. The beach is situated on the Dutch side of St. Maarten. It stretches along the entire length of the capital city of Philipsburg. It’s a great beach to spend a leisurely day under the island’s blue skies.

How To Get From The Cruise Port To Great Bay Beach

You can take a 5-minute water taxi ride, or it’s only 8 minutes by car. You could also take a leisurely 20-minute walk. If you choose the walking option, you will stroll along the town’s walkways and the boardwalk with its many shops, bars, and restaurants.  

What Attractions Are At Great Bay Beach?

Here are a few ideas of what you can do at Great Bay Beach:

• Great Bay beach is a lovely beach to sit and relax while soaking up the sun or enjoying the view of the ocean. Lounge chairs and umbrellas are available to rent.
• Take a swim in the clear blue sea. Kids can play on the sand and enjoy a splash in the calm water.
• Sit on the pier with a great view of the cruise ships that have docked in the port. From this lovely beach, you will also see beautiful mountains against the magnificent blue sky over the sea.
• Browse the shops for souvenirs and gorgeous beach wear.
• There are street bars, rum shacks serving ice-cold beer, and restaurants serving delicious food. Great food and lots of cold drinks to keep you refreshed while lounging in the sun.
• Clean restrooms are available to visitors.

If you would prefer a bit more adventure:

• Rent a jet ski and take a ride on the water.  
• You could visit the Rouge et Noir casino near the end of the beach strip. Take a chance at the slot machines and bingo games. The casino hours are 10am to 4am daily.

What Costs Are Involved In Visiting Great Bay Beach

Entrance to Great Bay Beach is free for all visitors. If you decide not to walk from the cruise port, you will pay a fee for your transport by water taxi or car. The water taxis do offer a special price, including a few trips to and from the port.  

Once on the beach, you will pay to rent chairs and an umbrella from a bar or shop. Some bars have great deals when renting chairs, where they will add on a bucket of cold beers. You will also need to budget for your meals and beverages.

Orient Bay Beach

Orient Bay Beach is just over 11km north of Philipsburg Port. It is the most famous and popular of the St Maarten beaches near the cruise port. It’s about a one-and-a-half-mile-long stretch of soft sand on the French side of St Maarten. Orient Bay boasts soft, powdery sand beside a gorgeous turquoise blue sea. It is sometimes referred to as the “Saint-Tropez of the Caribbean” . Strong trade winds blow in from the Atlantic Ocean, making this beach a haven for board sports. 

The beach has many different sections including a large clothing optional section. The beach’s western end is exclusively reserved for sun-loving nudists. If you have never visited a clothing-optional beach before, you should be sure to read up on proper nude beach etiquette in advance.

Restrooms and showers are available for visitors.

How To Get From The Cruise Port To Orient Bay Beach

Orient Bay is a quick drive by taxi or rental car, or you could ride on the bus. Other options include a 5-hour beach excursion that will take you to Orient Bay beach, and other places of interest. However, public transport by minivan is the cheapest option. 

Take a short walk into Philipsburg (about 10 minutes) to the bus terminal. The small bus will have a signboard with the beach’s name displayed on the windscreen. This is a great way to meet the locals and see where they live, as the bus will do a few stops along the way so the locals can disembark. 

You can ask the driver to pick you up again at an arranged time. Leave the beach at least 2 hours before you need to board the ship in case of any traffic delays.

What Attractions Are At Orient Bay Beach?

An abundance of adventurous water sports awaits you at Orient Bay beach . Below are just a few of the best activities:

• Kiteboarding is a great board sport in this area, and a 2hr lesson with an instructor at your side is the way to experience this sport if you are a novice. You will be provided with all the safety equipment you will need to venture out on your own. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
• Hobie Cat Safari is a fantastic way to cruise on the ocean for a 2hr trip to the marine park at Tintamarre Island. Only 30 minutes ride to the island where you can relax on the beach and meet the sea turtles and, in winter, the dolphins. You will be able to do some snorkeling and, on the way back, view Orient Bay’s magnificent coastline. This is a fantastic adventure!
• Paragliding will provide a magnificent 91m high view of the beautiful island. The boat crew will ensure a safe and smooth ride by providing you with equipment and safety instructions. And be sure to purchase a fantastic bragging photo for your memory book.
• Jet skiing is another fun watersport you can enjoy at Orient Bay beach. Rent a jet ski complete with fuel and safety gear. You can ride alone, or rent the double-person craft for two people.

• Enjoy swimming in the water or lazing in the sun.
• Eat at one of many wonderful restaurants on the beach offering fantastic cuisine and refreshing drinks. The eateries are a hive of energy with an exciting atmosphere as many businesses, and VIP parties are held here.
• Visit Orient Bay village, within walking distance of the beach. Here you can dine at French, Thai, and Italian restaurants. Or try a restaurant that serves local cuisine to taste an array of delicious dishes.

What Costs Are Involved In Visiting Orient Bay Beach

Entry into Orient Bay beach is free, and there is free parking available for vehicles as well. Transport to the beach by taxi or bus comes with a fee unless you have booked a beach excursion where transportation is included in the ticket cost. 

You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas to spend a fun-filled day on the beach. All water sports activities that require equipment are available at an hourly rate. Other costs to plan for are your food and drinks if eating at a restaurant. You could save costs and buy snacks at the cruise port stalls, and bring them with you to enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach.

If you’re visiting St. Maarten on a cruise, you’re in luck! St. Maarten is one of the most beautiful cruises port of call in the Caribbean and a favorite among cruise travelers.

St. Maarten Cruise Port

Cruise ships dock at the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise & Cargo Facilities, located in Philipsburg, the capital of St. Maarten, on the Dutch side of the island. The cruise port short walking distance from the heart of the town and nearby many popular attractions.

Many cruise lines dock in Philipsburg, from Celebrity Cruises to P&O and more. There can be as many as 5 cruise ships a day in port. However, when we were in St. Maarten recently, there were only 2 cruise ships docked.

Transportation options into the town of Philipsburg, local beaches and popular sights are conveniently located at the cruise terminal.

St. Maarten – What Cruise Passengers Need to Know

The official currency in St. Maarten is the Netherlands Antillean Guilder or Florin (NAf). However, US Dollars are widely accepted.

The local currency in St. Martin, on the French side of the island is the Euro (€). Similar to the Dutch side, US money is accepted across the island.

Tip: Credit cards are used and accepted widely, as are US dollars. Keep some small bills handy for tips for tour guides , to use at souvenir stands etc.

In St. Maarten, the official languages are Dutch and English. However, there are several languages in Sint Maarten/St. Martin including French, Spanish and Creole.

St. Maarten has a tropical climate, and experiences sunny and warm temperatures throughout the year. It can get hot and humid in St. Maarten, which makes the island perfect for beach lovers.

Getting Around St. Maarten

The best ways to get around St. Maarten as a cruise traveler are by foot, taxi or water taxi.

There is a taxi stand within walking distance of the cruise port. From here you can pick up shuttle transportation to popular tourist spots including Maho Beach, on the Dutch side of St. Maarten and Orient Beach, in St. Martin, on the French side.

The water taxi booth located close by to the cruise ships. You can purchase one way or round trip water taxi tickets to downtown Philipsburg and Great Bay Beach. The water taxi is one of the easiest and most common way cruise passengers go from the cruise port to Philipsburg.

If you want to save money on a cruise , you can take the public bus, which is the least expensive option. This does take some planning and it’s best to exercise caution.

It is also possible to rent a car in St. Maarten if you’re comfortable driving. Keep in mind that the roads on the Island will be quite busy when several cruise ships are in port.

Best Things to Do in St. Maarten Cruise Port During Your Cruise

We’ve been St. Maarten/St. Martin several times by cruise ship over the years, and it’s one of our all time favorite Caribbean cruise destinations. Even though St. Maarten is a small island, there are so many fun and interesting things to do!

You can visit St. Maarten on your own or with an organized shore excursion . Keep in mind that traffic can be heavier during peak times or when multiple cruise ships are in port. If you’re taking a shore excursion with the cruise line, the transportation time will be included in the itinerary.

Best Beaches in St. Maarten/St. Martin

Heading to the beach is a popular way to spend a day in St. Maarten while on a cruise. These are the best and most popular beaches for cruisers.

1. Great Bay Beach (Dutch Side)

Located in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, Great Bay beach is easily accessible by water taxi. This pretty beach is minutes away from the cruise port, which makes this one of the most popular and best beach for cruise passengers.

At Great Bay Beach, you’ll have a beautiful view of the cruise ships docked nearby. You’ll also be within walking distance of local restaurants, bars and shops along Front Street and the downtown core.

2. Orient Bay Beach (French Side)

Orient Bay Beach, located on the French side of St. Martin (St. Maarten), is one of the most famous and picturesque beaches in the Caribbean. In addition to it’s natural beauty, you’ll also find a vibrant beach club style atmosphere with restaurants, bars and water-sports all available.

Clothing Optional Section

Something to note is that there is a clothing-optional section known as “Club Orient.” This area is designated for those who prefer a clothing-optional experience, and it’s clearly marked. However, the main part of the beach is generally family-friendly.

3. Maho Beach (Dutch Side)

One of the most popular cruise excursions is a visit to St. Maarten’s Maho Beach, sometimes referred to as “airplane beach”. This beach is famous for its close proximity to the Princess Juliana International Airport, where planes fly low overhead during takeoffs and landings.

While Maho Beach can get crowded, especially when several cruise ships are in port, seeing planes flying almost overhead is a thrilling and memorable experience for beachgoers.

One of the easiest ways to spend the day while visiting St. Maarten on a cruise is to take the water taxi into town. While you can walk to downtown Philipsburg from the cruise port, it will take about 30 minutes or longer.

A water taxi is a nice 10-15 minute ride that will bring you to Great Bay Beach or Front Street, where you can spend the day exploring the town. Take a walking tour of Philipsburg or explore on your own.

The water taxi is $7 per person, round trip and free for children under 3 years of age.

8. Shopping in St. Maarten

Front street.

St. Maarten is well known for it’s duty free shopping opportunities! Front Street, the main shopping area in Philipsburg, has a wide range of stores and souvenir shops selling jewelry, electronics, fashion, and more.

Historic Old Street

Continue walking to historic Old Street, which is charming area with boutique shops and art galleries, perfect for finding unique gifts and local crafts.

Cruise Terminal Shops

For cruise passengers who don’t want to head into downtown Philipsburg, you’ll find jewelry, souvenir and local goods sold at the shops at the cruise terminal building and surrounding area.

Shops include Little Switzerland, Diamonds International, Effy’s and Boolchands. You’ll also find little kiosks or stands with local crafts and foods for purchase.

20. Pinel Island

Pinel Island is a short boat ride away from St. Maarten. With an excursion, you may be able to kayak or canoe over.

At Pinel Island, you can snorkle and see colorful coral reefs and tropical fish. Beach chairs and umbrellas available for rent ($25 for 2 chairs & one umbrella).

There are other day trips to nearby islands that are available as well.

There are several casinos in St. Maarteen. The largest casino on the island is Casino Royale, located in Maho village. A casino that is closer to the cruise ships is Rouge et Noir Casino SXM, located on Back Street in Philipsburg.

22. Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit

For something completely different, check out the The Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit in Philipsburg, St. Maarten. This must-see attraction was founded by Nick Maley, a creator of the Yoda character from Star Wars.

This unique exhibit showcases movie memorabilia from iconic films like Star Wars, Superman, and The Terminator. Visitors can enjoy guided tours. This fun tourist attraction is a treat for movie enthusiasts and travelers alike.

23. Secret Garden

While in downtown Philipsburg, be sure to walk through the Secret Garden. This free tropical pathway will take you from Front Street to Back Street.

This pretty garden pathway is worth walking through as you’re shopping and sightseeing in the town.

24. Philipsburg Courthouse

The Philipsburg Courthouse will be part of your walking tour, even if it’s informal. In addition to the charming building, you’ll find picturesque churches and hotels with interesting architecture.

A few years ago, St. Maarten was very badly affected by Hurricane Irma. While they have done an amazing job rebuilding much of the infrastructure of the island, the reconstruction is still a work in progress on the island.

25. Horseback Riding

If you’ve always wanted to go horseback riding, there are a few good options in St. Maarten. Lucky Stables at Seaside Nature Park offers a 1 hour trail and beach ride, riding lessons and a private or semi-private ride through the trails.

26. St. Maarten Bicycle Tour

For a different kind of tour, you can book a bicycle tour or e-bike tour where you’ll drive through the streets of Philipsburg, St. Maarten. You can also book a tour that will allow you to explore more of the island, including St. Martin. You can check the cruise line excursions as well as excursions with Viator, Shore Excursions Group and other local tour providers.

27. Ferry Ride or Boat Trip to Anguilla

If you’ve been to St. Maarten before, consider taking a ferry ride or boat trip from St. Maarten to Anguilla. The 25 minute ferry ride from Marigot will allow you to discover a tranquil paradise.

You’ll find stunning beaches, clear waters, and water sports like paddleboarding and kayaking. Anguilla has a great, laid-back atmosphere.

Keep in mind that you need to get back to the cruise ship on time, so this might be best as a cruise line shore excursion or if you are in St. Maarten for a long port day.

28. St. Maarten Art Galleries

St. Maarten’s art galleries showcase a diverse collection of Caribbean and international artwork, from paintings to sculptures. Located in Philipsburg and Marigot, art galleries offer a glimpse into the island’s culture. Unfortunately, at this time St. Martin’s Butterfly Farm is closed.

30. St. Martin’s Nature Reserve

St. Martin’s Nature Reserve is a serene sanctuary on the French side of the island, boasting diverse ecosystems, including mangroves and wetlands. This nature park is ideal for nature lovers and birdwatchers. The reserve offers guided tours and opportunities to spot indigenous wildlife.

31. Grand Case Beach

Grand Case Beach is a less popular, but very beautiful beach on the French side of the island. The beach is well known for it’s clear waters (more clear than on the Dutch side).

Unfortunately, according to recent reviews, the beach hasn’t fully recovered from the devastation of Hurricane Irma a few years ago.

32. Kayaking in Simpson Bay Lagoon

Paddle through the calm waters of Simpson Bay Lagoon, spotting wildlife and mangrove forests. Guided tours are available. This eco-friendly activity is a nice alternative to some of the busier beaches and excursions in St. Maarten.

St Maarten Cruise Port

The port of St Maarten is one of the fastest-growing Caribbean cruise ports and the leading cruise port in the Eastern Caribbean. The St Maarten cruise ship terminal is located in Philipsburg, the Dutch part of the island, around 2.4 km/1.5 miles away from the city center. It boasts an impressive infrastructure that can accommodate a couple of cruise ships simultaneously, including the world’s largest cruise ships.

Cruise ships dock at Harbour Point Village – a lively area full of duty-free shops, jewelry stores, market stalls, bars, and a restaurant. Tour buses and a taxi rank are located nearby.

To get to the taxis, you need to turn right and keep walking to the exit of the terminal area until you reach a small building housing a tourist information desk. The walk is 100-200 m long (depending on the location of your cruise ship’s dock), and in case you have difficulty walking, there is a small trolley that can take you there for free.

Once you get there, you’ll spot a small roundabout with plenty of taxi vehicles waiting for the cruise passengers to take them to Philipsburg city center or elsewhere. Here, you’ll also find a tourist information desk and tour booths offering tours and car rentals , as well as a shore excursion meeting place (always double-check your tour ticket, though).

Tour guides usually wait for cruise ship passengers here, but make sure you come on time because this area can be extremely busy, and might be challenging to find your tour meeting place.

It takes a 15-minute walk from the St Maarten cruise terminal to get to this beautiful little 19th-century Roman Catholic Church, dedicated to the bishop of Tours, the patron saint of the island.

The museum is small, it consists of a few rooms and is not suitable for people with mobility issues, as there is no elevator to take you to the second floor.

2. St Maarten/St Martin Beaches

2.1. maho beach.

This famous beach is one of the main St Maarten attractions and is located a 25-minute drive (14 km/9 miles) from the cruise ship terminal. It consists of a small stretch of white sandy beach located next to the runway of Princess Juliana International Airport.

It is popular for plane watching as they take off and land only a few yards above your head! The beach is quite busy and most of the people come there for amazing photo opportunities!

2.2. Mullet Bay Beach

A beautiful calm beach located in the southwest of the island, around 14 km/9 miles from the St Maarten cruise terminal (a 30-minute drive). The best way to get there is by taxi or renting a car (there is a large parking lot near the beach).

Philipsburg’s city beach is the closest beach to the St Maarten cruise terminal (around 2 km away, a 15-20 minute walk). The best way to get there is to take a water taxi at the cruise terminal that will take you directly to the beach.

This is a long public beach located in the south of the island, in the heart of Philipsburg, backed by a boardwalk full of shops, restaurants, cocktail bars, and places for fun. The beach is clean and sandy, and not too crowded. You can rent umbrellas and sunbeds from local people, prices are reasonable.

2.4. Little Bay Beach

This is a gorgeous beach located 4 km/2.5 miles away from the St Maarten cruise terminal (a 10-minute drive). It features a beautiful setting, a long shoreline, deep waters, and amazing snorkeling! It has all the necessary facilities, such as beach bars, restaurants, beach chairs and umbrellas, and restrooms.

2.5. Orient Bay Beach

The beach is located on the northeast coast of the island, in Saint Martin – the French side of the island, around 12 km/7.5 miles from the St Maarten cruise terminal (a 25-minute drive).

That’s Maho Beach, aka Airport Beach.

It’s famous because if you’re there at the right time, and if you’ve got the right spot on the beach, planes will fly directly over you like in this picture here . (Unfortunately, Maho Beach isn’t what it used to be following the destruction of Hurricane Irma in 2017.)

Maho Beach is a 30-40 minute drive to reach, and it requires a shore excursion or taxi to get there. You can see the location on the St. Maarten map below.

As long as you don’t mind a little walking, it’s quite possible to walk to Great Bay Beach from the St Maarten cruise port.

There are many parts of the island that don’t really make for good walking because of narrow shoulders and lots of cars, but your path to the beach from the cruise port is lined with sidewalks. It’s about a 20 minute walk one way. If you’re lucky, you may even see a mountain goat or two during your walk!

Walking to the St Maarten beach near the cruise port…

One thing you’ll notice when you’re in St Maarten is that there are tons of BOATS! You can take a detour to walk through the marina.

Once you get near the beach, you’ll see what’s called the boardwalk

And there’s the cruise port! Cruise ships on one side, hotel resort on the other.

This beach is in a cute little area so you can explore a little bit away from the beach too.

It’s not too busy and it generally has the laid back Caribbean vibe to it.

There are little shops that you can buy a drink or a smoothie, as well as do your souvenir shopping.

The beach is also right by the downtown area of Philipsburg, which is the main city of St Maarten, and you can have a walk exploring the shops and Old Street of St Maarten too.

St Maarten Cruise Port to Maho Beach • A Day Trip to the Airplane Beach

How to get from St Maarten cruise port to Maho Beach in one day.

The Airplane Beach in St Maarten is not what I was expecting. I had previously had an image of a fairly peaceful wide open white sandy paradise with crystal clear water, palm trees, and every now and again, an airplane zooming low overhead. That was very silly of me. There was indeed white sand and crystal clear water, but Maho Beach is also one of the most-visited beaches in St Maarten, mainly due to the fact that it’s built directly next to the runway of Princess Juliana International Airport. It is narrow, generally extremely crowded (especially when there are lots of cruise ships in port), and there are plenty of tacky bars offering neon-coloured cocktails, beers, and baskets of fries and chicken wings. You might have already sensed from my description that this beach is not my normal kind of place.

(But it’s still pretty fun to be in the sea when a plane comes in to land.)

How to get from St Maarten cruise port to Maho Beach

St Maarten’s cruise port is in the capital city- Philipsburg – which has space for a whole load of cruise ships to dock at once. This island is an extremely popular stopping point for cruise ships, and whenever we ported here there were at least three other ships parked up at the same time, although none of them were anywhere near full capacity. When we left the ship that morning the sky was overcast and there was drizzle all around; but the weather in the Caribbean can change in a matter of minutes. Rainclouds rarely stick around for long, and we were confident that by the time we reached the airplane beach it would have passed. 

If you want to save time, you might want to pre-book your excursion from St Maarten cruise port to Maho Beach. C heck out this tour , which involves a stop on the airplane beach as well as the beautiful Orient Bay on the French side of the island. Alternatively, here is a round-trip tour only between St Maarten cruise port and Maho Beach.

The best way to get from St Maarten cruise port to Maho Beach without a pre-booked excursion, is to take a taxi. The journey is way too long to walk, and costs around $15-20 per person depending on how many are in the car. Leave the piers and head to the right, where there’s a row of taxis waiting to leave. These taxis are more like minivans, and it’s likely that you’ll share a ride with other passengers or crew in order to fill up the vehicle.

Unlike the not-so-long-ago days of haggling a price with your taxi driver, prices are set, and after paying for your return taxi, you’ll be given a wrist band in the style of a package holiday. This is your ticket to the beach and back; the taxi will drop you in the car park close to Maho Beach, and taxi vans regularly take passengers back from the exact same spot. 

Although the distance between St Maarten cruise port and the Airplane Beach isn’t particularly far, there is almost always traffic to contend with. The journey should only take about 20 minutes, but we spent almost double that crawling along in a long line of cars. Having sat in many a hot sticky vehicle on other Caribbean islands like the Dominican Republic or Antigua , I was expecting an uncomfortable journey, but considering the length of time we spent sat inside a vehicle that morning, it was surprisingly ok. 

Alternatively you can catch a water taxi from inside the cruise port, which is slightly more expensive. Or walk into Philipsburg and catch a local bus heading to Maho Beach.

Where to eat and drink at Maho Beach

There are several options for eating and drinking at Maho Beach, and when we arrived the bars and restaurants were packed full of mostly American tourists who had been sheltering from the rain. This is clearly a popular holiday destination, whether for people travelling only to Sint Maarten, or cruise passengers and crew like me and my pal Rachel; but I was still surprised by how Americanised the whole place felt. I’d really been expecting a Dutch island. Especially considering all the cheese shops we’d passed en route in the taxi. 

The restaurants and bars are huddled at opposite ends of Maho Beach, although the entire thing is so small that it only takes about ten minutes to walk from one end to the other.

(At the end nearest the car park is also, FYI, a public bathroom. Good to know, ya know.)

Hungry and thirsty when we arrived, we sat on the covered decking of the Sunset Beach Bar (check out their live webcam of the planes landing if you’re curious), and ordered fries and drinks. There were so many people that the waitstaff were ran off their feet, carrying gigantic trays from table to table and struggling to keep up with all the orders. Couples sat with suitcases drank their last cocktails in paradise before they headed off to the airport, and groups of friends who’d just arrived were already on their fourth or fifth cocktail as music pounded from the speakers. At the end closest to the beach, screens displayed the timings of the next planes to land on the landing strip to the right. 

Next to the Sunset Beach Bar is Sandbar , a colourful new eatery which offers just about every kind of food you could wish for, from sushi and burgers to tacos and smores. For a slightly different vibe, and the opportunity to cook your own food on lava stones, head to the Palms Grill at the opposite end of the beach.

If you’re cruising throughout the Caribbean, I highly recommend using an eSim card so that you can easily access data across the region. The best value I’ve found so far is this one from Airalo – in fact I think they’re so bloomin’ good that I use their esims wherever I travel throughout the whole wide world!

Beach day under the airplanes

Fed and watered, Rachel and I headed onto the beach itself. The tide was in so close that there wasn’t a lot of free sand space at all- although I’m told there’s not a drastic difference between high and low tide at Maho. The crowds of people waiting for planes to land took up almost the entire middle of the beach closest to the runway. Plenty of crew from our ship had decided to visit that day as well, and we passed about thirty galley guys and their supervisor yelling “GALLEY GALLEY GALLEY!!! A-OO A-OO A-OO!!!” as they posed for group photos.

In the sea, people swam and jumped in the swell whilst waiting for the next plane to land. The only thing that separates the beach from the runway is a narrow tarmac road and a wire fence, on which signs are tacked, warning people to stay back because of blasts from the jets. And the area directly in the path to the runway was naturally where people gravitated towards; everyone needs the money shot of themselves with an airplane zooming low behind. 

Finally we decided on a spot at the very far end, clear of the runway but close enough that we could make a run for it if we desperately wanted to be under the pathway of a jumbo jet. The sun was scorching hot and getting into the cool water melted away the crazy sweaty energy of the beach bar. The sky might have been blue by then, but the sea was ragingly choppy and the tide swept me off my feet several times before I could even think about getting further out into the water. 

Whenever a plane appeared, twinkling in the distance of the now completely vivid blue sky, the throngs would gather tighter together, all vying for the best spot. Each airplane came in so low over the sand that it felt as if you could almost reach out and touch them as they rumbled onwards to the tarmac across the road. For the most part, we stayed out of the crowds but still appreciated the landings at an angle. But eventually the tide came in so close that there was nothing else for it but to pack up and move on. 

Beware of the jet blasts- deaths at Maho Beach

Airplanes create quite humungous jet blasts when they’re taking off, and so it seems fairly logical that you shouldn’t stand too close. Kind of like never standing at the back end of a horse. It’s just not a good idea.

And yet there really is just a simple wire fence separating the road from the runway. In 2017 a woman from New Zealand was killed when she was thrown backwards by a jet blast from a Caribbean Airlines flight which was taking off. Pay attention to the signs, pals! And use your heads!

I had a great day watching the planes on Maho Beach, but will I be going back there in a hurry, pals? Probably not. Once was enough for me, and there are plenty more peaceful beaches on the island which are way more up my street.

The 8 Best Beaches in St. Maarten – Dutch Side

Oh, the lure of powdery sand under your feet and an inviting turquoise sea in front of you. So hard to resist. 

If I stroke a chord right there you’ll want to take a few minutes to learn about Sint Maarten, an island in the Caribbean where an imaginary line divides the Dutch side from the French side and where beaches are nothing short of fantastic.

In this post I’m going to tell you about the best beaches in St. Maarten Dutch Side ( Saint Martin is the French side).

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing experience in calm waters or for some wave action, for a secluded less visited spot or to mingle with crowds flocking to bars, there’s something for everyone.

Is there sargassum in Sint Maarten? Yes. The island hasn’t escaped the problem affecting the rest of the Caribbean. But it comes and goes in waves and the beaches located on the west side are little to no affected by it.

To me, this is the best beach overall in St Maarten. A long, spectacular sandy beach with gorgeous turquoise hues, gentle waves (depending on the weather) and a small reef area to the left for snorkeling.

Even during a sargassum surge you don’t see much of the smelly stuff because It’s located on the west side.

You’ll find beach chairs and umbrellas for rent and a few food vendors. For a less crowded experience go during weekdays or in the morning.

How to Get to Mullet Bay Beach

From the cruise port or Philipsburg area: walk to Back Street in Philipsburg (a 10-minute walk) and hop on the bus/van that says “Mullet Beach/Maho Beach”. You can also take a taxi, but it’s way more expensive.

Traffic in Sint Maarten can be crazy at times so plan your return accordingly.

If you’re in Maho Beach, you can walk for 15 minutes to Mullet Bay Beach (if you don’t mind walking along the road).

Simpson Bay Beach

This one-mile long, sandy beach with calm waters and mountain views runs parallel to the airport landing strip and it’s perfect for long walks. You’ll encounter spots that look like the typical postcard with clean soft sand, spots that are rocky, and spots where beach erosion from storms (especially if you visit right after one) are more evident.

A nice spot I enjoyed is the stretch around Karakter Beach Bar. It has lounge chairs with shade and the food and drinks are good.

Simpson Bay Beach is a popular place; expect crowds.

Best Beaches in St Maarten Near Cruise Port

Great bay beach.

This is the cruise ship beach. If Sint Maarten is a stop on your cruise you only have to walk a few minutes to dip your toes in the soft sand of this long and beyond busy beach that has an endless selection of bars, restaurants and shops along a wide boardwalk.

Some places offer good packages that include a locker, beach chairs, umbrella, table and selected drinks for a fixed fee. It’s a good beach for families as the water is calm, with an easy entry.

If you’re staying in St. Maarten for a few days aim for a day with fewer ships (or no ships) to avoid the crowds. 

If you want to stay right in front of Great Bay Beach, close to Philipsburg’s shopping area, check out the Holland House Beach Hotel .

You’ll also be within minutes from the docks from where many tours of Sint Maarten depart.

Little Bay Beach

This beautiful beach is a 5-minute taxi ride or, if you’re up to it, a 45-minute scenic walk from the cruise port along the Great Bay Beach boardwalk and then up along a road with great views of the bay. Better do it in the morning rather than under the midday sun.

We rented an umbrella and two beach chairs at the Divi Little Bay Beach Resort (there’s no entrance fee) and spent an entire day floating in crystal clear waters with gentle waves and walking on powdery sand. We munched on some snacks we brought with us and sipped guavaberry coladas from the bar. Try one, or two!

Within the resort property you can visit Fort Amsterdam for a fantastic view of Great Bay and Little Bay, and to see a large colony of brown pelicans.

A perfect, relaxing day.

Maho Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Sint Maarten, not so much for the beach per se, but for what happens above. 

It’s only a few feet away from Sint Maarten airport’s landing strip, making it hard to find any other place in the world where you can stand so close under a landing plane without getting in trouble for it (as long as you stay away from the airport fence).

Maho Beach is on the small side, with a narrow stretch of sand that can cover most of the beach or can be barely there depending on the weather as sands shift with storms.

Some people swim in the turquoise waters, but most people stand on the sand (or rocks) with their phones up in the air hoping to snap the perfect picture of planes landing so close that you feel you can almost grab the wheels if you stretch your arms long enough.

For the most exhilarating experience (and cool photos), check the Princess Juliana International Airport arrival schedule online and look out for the landing of big birds like the Airbus A330-200 from KLM (the direct flight from Amsterdam) or the Air France flight from Paris.

Most big planes arrive between late morning and mid-afternoon so plan your trip accordingly to avoid disappointment.

Of course you can always enjoy the beach even if there are no flights, but the main attraction here is the landing.

Since it’s such a big thing, you can expect crowds. Tons. The small beach is normally packed, with crowds overflowing into the road. If you’re going only for the beach, there are better options such as Mullet Bay Beach, a mere 15-minute walk away.

You can also grab some drinks at the nearby Sunset Bar & Grill from where you’ll have an awesome view of the planes and the blue sea. 

How to Get to Maho Beach

If you’re on the cruise port (or in the Philipsburg area) walk to Back Street and take public transportation to Maho Beach (you’ll see the signs on the units’ windshield), at a fraction of what you would pay for a taxi (buses cost around US$2).  

If you’re at the Sint Maarten’s airport for a long layover, sitting at one of the bars at Maho Beach is a much better alternative than waiting at the airport and it’s only a 10-minute walk.

Best Scenic Beaches in Sint Maarten

Cupecoy beach.

The huge rocks sticking out of the bright blue water and the waves crashing against the rugged cliffs create a beautiful scenery in Cupecoy beach.

The beach is interspersed along the shore in the form of several small pockets -including sandy and rocky mini beaches and small caves- that are accessible from different points. 

This is not the best beach for long walks or for swimming as it can be rough, but it’s somewhat secluded, quite scenic, popular with surfers and clothing-optional fanatics, and those looking for a great spot to watch the sunset.

There’s only one bar in the immediate area, located on the northern section of the beach.

You can catch a van/bus to Cupecoy Beach from Philipsburg.

Pelican Key Beach

This small, sandy beach is great for watching Sint Maarten’s amazing sunsets and the silhouettes of boats rocking against the violet and orange hues.

It’s also a great beach for swimming as the clear water is on the calmer side (with a steep grade) and it’s less crowded than other popular nearby beaches.

The area of Pelican Key is a lively place to stay in Sint Maarten, with easy access to the beach, supermarkets, and with many choices of bars, restaurants, and bakeries.

You’ll also be close to the Simpson Bay Lagoon, the departure point of many boats offering different water activities in Sint Maarten like this catamaran sail to Anguilla beaches including snorkeling or this highly rated sunset cruise of Sint Maarten .

La Vista Resort is a great option to stay this area.

A hotel with beautifully landscaped common areas, an outdoor pool overlooking the sea, on-site bar and restaurant, and rooms and cottages with seating areas and equipped with kitchenette, fridge, and microwave. Some rooms have sea views.

If you’re looking for a nice property with 2-bedroom suites and full kitchens check out the Hilton Vacation Club Royal Palm , close to La Vista.

Best Secluded Beach in Sint Maarten

Indigo bay beach (cay bay).

Indigo Bay Beach is less visited than other beaches in Sint Maarten as it’s a little bit more out of the main highway, with no commercial developments around.

At the end of the serpentine road going downhill you’ll find a long sandy stretch in the shape of a demilune, flanked by hills populated with big houses.

It’s a beautiful beach that can be affected when the sargassum invasion is at its worst.

There is a restaurant on site serving good food, with chairs available.

To reach Indigo Bay you’ll need to take a taxi or rent a car in Sint Maarten . But taxis are so expensive in Sint Maarten that it’s much better to go for the second option.

St. Maarten Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions, Weather

The Philipsburg St. Maarten cruise port has three major attractions: the massive John Craane cruise terminal, the nearby city and Great Bay Beach right beside it.

A St. Maarten cruise has great appeal simply because the island has one of the best cruise ports in the entire Caribbean. It offers convenient access and plenty to do right there by the port.

The St. Maarten cruise port at Philipsburg has all of the above in a pleasant mix. It is a must-see stop for any southern or eastern Caribbean cruise and why 2 million cruise visitors come to the port every year.

Quick Travel Tips

The city of Philipsburg itself is one of the best attractions on the island because of its appealing and well-developed tourism district. It also has the massive cruise terminal nearby.

Cruise visitors will arrive at Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise & Cargo Facilities just outside of Philipsburg on Great Bay. The John Craane cruise terminal is a large open-air mall where visitors can shop, dine and head for their paid shore excursions. The terminal has useful signs that point people to where they want to go.

Where they want to go often includes Philipsburg itself. The main appeal is the convenient Great Bay Beach, the long boardwalk that runs parallel to it and the shops and restaurants that line the boardwalk. Running parallel to the boardwalk is Front Street, which has most of the shops in the city. It’s worth noting that shopping on Front Street has declined in recent years because much of it has moved to the John Craane cruise terminal.

Great Bay Beach isn’t the best beach in the Caribbean or even the best beach on St. Maarten. But it is one of the most convenient beaches in the Caribbean for cruise port visitors because it is within walking distance of the docks. They can rent umbrellas and chairs for a reasonable price and a lovely view of the bay.

Cruise passengers get from the docks to Philipsburg via walking, taxi or an inexpensive water taxi. The walk is about 10 minutes, goes three fourths of a mile and is not difficult on a warm day. The water taxi stand at the cruise port is just a quick walk north of the docks. Again, look for signs point the way. The price for an entire day is $7 per person at the time of this writing.

Anyone who walks around the Philipsburg waterfront won’t find much else to see other than the beach, boardwalk, shops and restaurants. Very energetic walkers can hike 2.5 miles to the other side of the bay to Little Bay Beach and the small ruins of Fort Amsterdam.

Shore Excursions

Outside of Philipsburg, two of the most famous attractions on the island are beaches.

Orient Beach, which lies north of Philipsburg in the French district, is the most popular and well-known beach on the island. Note that it is clothing optional. Don’t be surprised to see a beach goer who wears nothing at all. An exclusive shore excursion to Orient Bay costs about $70 per person.

One of the more famous and controversial attractions is the Maho Bay beach next to Princess Juliana International Airport. The short runway forces planes to fly low over the beach. Some beach visitors get so close that the blast from the jet engines knock them over. A snorkeling excursion there costs about $75 per person including transportation.

A nice day trip is a jaunt from the Philipsburg cruise port over to Marigot, capital of the French side, or Grand Case. Other St. Maarten attractions include the Mont Vernon Plantation and the Butterfly Farm.

An island tour that includes quick stops at Orient Beach, Maho Bay, Marigot, Mullet Bay Beach and other attractions will cost about $50 per person.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Great Bay Beach is the most convenient beach for cruise port visitors because it lies within a brief walk and water taxi ride from the cruise docks. Orient is the most famous. But in our experience, the best beaches for St. Maarten visitors aren’t on St. Maarten.

Anyone with an interest in good beaches might instead consider a shore excursion to one of the neighboring islands, such as Anguilla, St. Barth or Saba.

Anguilla is the most popular of the three and only 10 miles off the St. Maarten coast. It has beautiful white sand beaches and is reachable by ferry or excursion boat from Simpson Bay and Marigot. St. Barth is frequented by the rich and famous. Saba is known for hiking and other ecotourism activities.

Shopping and Dining

Anyone wanting a break from Great Bay Beach can stroll along the Boardwalk, which is lined with restaurants and shops.

They can walk a hundred more feet to reach many more restaurants and the port’s extensive shopping district, most of which falls along the lengthy Front Street.

Until the development of the new cruise terminal, Front Street ranked among one of the best shopping experiences in the Caribbean—along with Playa Del Carmen, St. Thomas and Old San Juan. It is quite a bit more quiet these days.

The street is a long walk but not too challenging for anyone who is somewhat fit. If walking isn’t appealing, there are quite a few transportation options.

The best restaurants on the island are mainly concentrated in two areas. They are Philipsburg on the southern coast and Simpson Bay on the southwest coast because they have the cruise port and the airport.

More restaurants are in the packed resort areas. A smaller number of restaurants are on the French side in Marigot and Grand Case.

The Philipsburg and Simpson Bay restaurants cater to all tastes. But they mainly represent low-end casual in one group and high-end seafood and steak in the other.

There are few chain restaurants. The St. Martin French restaurants in Marigot are smaller and more casual.

Getting Around

On foot. Philipsburg is big enough and developed enough to spend most of the day on foot.

But traffic outside of the Boardwalk and Front Street is often heavy. So get a taxi or car rental if you plan to see more than just the tourism district.

Taxis. Taxi rates are set according to more than 20 zones around the island.

Expect to pay anywhere between $7 and $35 to get to a zone. At the time of this writing, getting to Marigot is $18 and Orient Beach is $20.

Car rentals. The island has a small number of narrow winding roads, so car rentals even for a day are quite common—so common that traffic jams are frequent.

A cruise visitor who is thinking about a car rental might do so for visits to the less-populated French side of the island, especially the quaint city of Marigot.

Driving around parts of the Dutch side, especially around Simpson Bay, adds some risk of traffic jams and late returns to the ship.

Public bus. Taking a bus is a less expensive option. A St. Maarten bus is often an SUV. It has BUS at the beginning of the license plate and the destination sign in the window.

Taxis, which also are usually SUVs, have a T at the beginning of the license plate. A 10-15 percent tip for bus and taxi drivers is common.

Bicycles / scooters. While it is useful to consider a rental car, bus or taxi, it is wise to avoid renting a bicycle or scooter.

The island has virtually no stop signs or stop lights. The roads are narrow and winding. Drivers are sometimes aggressive when fighting through traffic.

Cruise Port Weather

St. Maarten’s average weather consists of warm temperatures year round that average in the mid 80s Fahrenheit.

Temperatures stay in the low 80s Fahrenheit in the winter and reach the high 80s in the summer. Seawater averages about three degrees cooler, which makes swimming good at any time.

Rainfall is a different matter. It is often moderate from January through July. Then it climbs to a high point for the rest of the year.

September and November historically have the highest rainfall and are the riskiest months to go there.

Cruise Port Guide St. Martin – Philipsburg: docked or tender

The cruise dock in St. Maarten is called the A.C. Wathey Pier. It is a large cruise facility that can accomodate several mega cruise ships. At St. Martin’s cruise terminal you will find international and local shops, tourist information, cafe’s and restaurants and a (water)taxi service. The cruise dock is about 1,5 km or 1 mile from the city centre of Philipsburg. You are free to walk, but you can also take the water taxi or a regular taxi.

Sometimes ships drop anchor in the bay in front of Philipsburg and tender people to shore. Find the tender platform right in the city centre of Philipsburg. See map above for its exact location.

Most ships will dock when they make St. Martin their port of call and therefore the following information is based on ships docking at the cruise terminal. Underneath you will find your transportation options:

Water taxi at St. Maarten cruise dock

The water taxi is a very popular way to go to the city centre of Philipsburg. At the cruise terminal you will find signs that will lead you there. Take into account that the walk to the water taxi pier can be about a 10 minute walk depending on where your ship is docked. Find a booth (see picture) to buy a ticket. Roundtrip watertaxi tickets from the St. Maarten cruise port to Philipsburg costs: – Adults: 7 US dollars – Crew member: 3 US dollars – Children under 3 years old: Free You can pay cash in US dollar or with credit card. The water taxi is wheelchair accessible. Ask for specifications at the booth. After you have bought your ticket you will receive a paper bracelet as proof of payment and you proceed to the pier. Taxis in St. Martin

There is a large taxi stand at the cruise terminal in St. Maarten. Taxi rates are fixed and based on how many people are in the taxi. Beneath are the taxi prices (starting at the cruise terminal) for 2 passengers, each additional passenger is US$5: to Philipsburg: $8 to Pelican: $15 to Marigot: $18 to Airport: $20 to Orient Bay: $22 A sightseeing taxis tour for 2 passengers for 3 hours will cost you $90 dollars and $25 extra for each additional person.

There is a car rental facility as well at the St. Martin cruise terminal. We advice you to book in advance.

There are plenty of busses that run between Philipsburg and Marigot. The buses depart at back street (one of the 2 main streets in Philipsburg). The fare is 2 to 3 US dollar.

Walk from the cruise terminal

It is also an option to walk from the cruise terminal to Philipsburg city center, but take in mind it will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Finding the way is easy. Just make sure you keep the water on your left hand side walking to the town. A hat and water are recommended!

Border crossing

No need to worry. If you are going from the Dutch into French side and back there is no border control or anything like that. We don’t even recommend taking your passport.

  St. Martin is one of the best shopping ports of the Caribbean. There are hundreds of duty free stores and the discounts are great. Start your shopping day at Front street in the heart of Philipsburg. You can either take the watertaxi right to the center of this street or walk from the cruise terminal which will take you about 20 to 30 minutes.

The St. Maarten cruise terminal does not provide free wi-fi, but you’ll find that wifi is often included with a purchase at one of the cafe’s and restaurants at the cruise terminal. There is also an internet cafe at the cruise terminal. If you are planning to go to the beach than you’ll find that most beach beds nowadays come with wi-fi access.

There are lots of beaches nearby. The most popular and convenient one is the Great Bay beach. It is right in town at the main boulevard. It is within sight of the ship, in the city centre and there are lots of facilities. Other popular beaches are not within walking distance, but if you are willing to take a taxi we can recommend Dawn beach, Mullet Bay Beach or Orient Beach. 

In St. Maarten, on the Dutch side of the island, the official currency is the antillean guilder. However US dollar are widely accepted. Most prices are clearly displayed in US dollars and most shops will have no problem accepting US dollars and will even have the change ready in US dollars. Creditcards are accepted at mosts shops.

9 Best Things To Do In St. Maarten During A Day In Port

W hile I had visited St. Maarten many times on cruises, I had never left for a cruise from this port until I sailed with Windstar Cruises. My husband Eddie and I flew into St. Maarten and used the ship’s transfer to shuttle us to a hotel; we wanted to be sure to dodge any unexpected change of travel plans before cruising the following afternoon. There was time to experience a little more of the dual-nation island than in the past, which was a nice change of pace. Here is what we found to be the best things to do in St. Maarten during a day in port.

St. Maarten, Dutch ( Netherlands ), and St. Martin, French, make up the two-nation, 37-square-mile island in the Lesser Antilles Archipelago.

I was hosted by Windstar Cruises on a press trip. All reviews and opinions are 100 percent unbiased and my own.

1. See The Marigot Waterfront

St. Maarten’s capital, Marigot, has many boutiques and quaint outdoor French cafes, bistros, and sushi restaurants. Colonial buildings, plus some contemporary, are situated between pastel-colored shopping arcades.

Shopping and dining — named some of the best in the Caribbean — are primo at this picturesque location. You’ll find Rosemary’s Seafood and Creole Cuisine, a restaurant written about in major magazines and books, such as Travel + Leisure and Lonely Planet .

Pro Tip: Don’t miss the sculpture of the Market Woman, done by local artist Martin Lynn and dedicated to the St. Martin Market Women. It is one of St. Martin’s most recognized works of art.

2. Arrive Early

Arrive on the island of St. Maarten — often written Sint Maarten — a day before your cruise, so you have a chance to unwind and enjoy the starting point a bit. We stayed at the Homage Hotel & Residences , a modern hotel on the French side, St. Martin, with a huge bedroom and well-lit bathroom. Tropical paintings, vibrant colors, and accent pieces really made our room pop. A small patio with lounge chairs was right outside our room through sliding glass doors, which led right down to the sand. We were steps from the beach. 

The Homage Hotel had a stunning infinity pool and plenty of space to wander with social distance. Be prepared to feel like you’ve been transported somewhere amazing during your stay here. Palm trees were plentiful, and the entire resort was covered with unique artwork and sculptures. The Homage had an onsite restaurant and bar, which was good since nothing was very close to us. Eddie and I thoroughly enjoyed the tropical vibe, cute spots to hang out along the waterfront, and the chill-out Ibiza music playing throughout.

3. Explore St. Martin

The french side of the island.

St. Martin has a totally different feel and vibe from its counterpart, St. Maarten. Eddie and I had a great night out here with new friends we’d made at the hotel who were also going on our cruise. We took a cab to Marigot for dinner at Be Kool . The restaurant sat on the waterfront and was in an excellent location. We each had a bowl of French onion soup, luscious and rich. My main course was a fantastic pork tenderloin with mushroom sauce. 

You won’t want to miss the high-end retail and fancy designer shops in the daytime and the open-market bazaar in St. Martin. There are also vendor stalls with fresh produce, locally-made jewelry, and clothing to meet your shopping needs.

Pro Tip: Please note that this area, like much of the United States, is experiencing a worker shortage, so be prepared to spend 2+ hours at dinner.

4. Take An Island Tour Of St. Martin

We had quite a bit of time to kill after disembarking our Windstar Cruises ship before heading to the airport, so we signed up for the 3-hour, post-cruise island tour. Our guide was fantastic — full of knowledge and fun, relatable facts, plus cheery and happy-go-lucky. We made a loop of the entire island and had several photo-ops and free time opportunities. 

The group spent 25 minutes or so strolling around Marigot at our own pace. Use this time to grab a French pastry, baguette, or great cup of coffee. We had around 45 minutes to explore downtown Phillipsburg . This is where many large cruise ships come into port, so there are plenty of things to see and do. We found an Indian restaurant on a side street off Front and had a delicious meal. For a bonus, there was free WiFi and the owners were very gracious for our business.

Pro Tip: Yacht racing is popular in St. Martin — you will see plenty of pricey vessels worth a photo.

5. Downtown Phillipsburg

Downtown Phillipsburg has 16 blocks of nearly everything you could wish to purchase duty-free, mostly jewelry, clothing, electronics, and shoes. I found the charming little courthouse to be a nice change in scenery, looking like it was transported from New England .

Voorstraat has casinos — slots, blackjack, and roulette — and duty-free shops, plus a Hard Rock Cafe that unfortunately closed and broke my heart as I was craving a juicy cheeseburger.

On the beach side of Great Bay, you’ll find the cool boardwalk, an excellent place to enjoy the salty air, people-watch, and buy souvenirs. Popular souvenirs include magnets, postcards, tote bags, rum, and tropical clothing. It was Christmas on our visit, and Heineken had a Christmas tree display for a big event that topped all holiday decorations for the whole trip.

Pro Tip: There are some fun murals to see around downtown Phillipsburg, too. 

6. Phillipsburg Marketplace

Front Street, which runs along the eastern Caribbean Sea’s waterfront in Phillipsburg, the Dutch side of the island, is lined with flags, street lamps, and pure white sand beaches. Market stalls, or kiosks, offer all sorts of handmade goods at the Phillipsburg Marketplace, such as license plates, jewelry, toys, and t-shirts. 

If tablecloths excite you as they do us, check out Mr. Tablecloth Too , with custom-made pieces, placemats, and table runners. Lace is an artform on this island, and the delicate pieces make one-of-a-kind souvenirs. 

Pro Tip: While prices are negotiable, I encourage you to not barter and support the locals who rely on tourism to put food on their tables.

7. Go Fishing

St. Maarten is a year-round fishing destination, so use your time to charter a boat and try it. Or even go deep-sea fishing, which is an option with Viator , a TripAdvisor company that I’ve used around the world. Sailfish and marlin are popular during the summer months, while kingfish, wahoo, and mahi-mahi are highly sought after. 

8. Enjoy The Beaches

Cruise ships dock at A.C. Wathey Pier, in Dutch St. Maarten. It is referred to as the “St. Tropez of the Caribbean.”

St. Martin boasts the most famous beach on the island, Orient Beach. Expect frolicking sunbathers ; ladies in colorful clothing, selling over-priced goods and offering to braid your hair; and tasty, cosmopolitan restaurants on the beach with the best beef carpaccio you’ve ever tasted. 

If you wish to enjoy a day at the beach, look no further. Bring some cash to reserve a lounge chair and umbrella, should you desire, and feast your eyes on the magical crystal blue water and often the athletic youngsters playing volleyball or chasing waves. Orient Beach is continually voted one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

I will alert you that there is a clothing-optional beach, so be prepared. It is somewhat on the edge of Orient Beach and in the Club Orient section. Don’t expect big parties there or something MTV-worthy, as these are primarily people just dabbling in naturalism. Please do not use a camera, and respect their privacy.

While St. Martin has Orient Beach, St. Maarten has an exciting opportunity that is unmatched anywhere in the world. You can watch the airplanes land at Princess Juliana International Airport on Maho Beach. And by watching, I mean you can feel the force of the wind from the planes so strongly that you may need to brace yourself. Sandblasted is what they call it. The airport sits along the beach, with a mountain on the other side. 

For a quieter option in St. Maarten, consider going to Mullet Bay Beach, perfect for snorkeling and enjoying water sports. Fun fact: The island has a whopping 37 beaches in total. 

Pro Tip: Order a famous Sint Maarten Guavaberry Colada. This three-ingredient drink is made from Guavaberry liqueur (the island’s national liqueur), cream of coconut, and pineapple juice. 

9. Go Horseback Riding

It’s always a thrilling opportunity to ride horses on the beautiful sandy beaches, so why not check off this bucket list activity while you are here?

My first cruise was a 7-day disappointment. Even worse, it left me feeling sick long after touching dry land.

• I took my first-ever cruise in February and realized cruising isn't for me .
• I had horrible weather and rough seas that left me feeling sick after the cruise.
• I don't want to roll the dice again, so I have no desire to go on another cruise.

I took my first-ever cruise in February and spent a week sailing around the Eastern Caribbean on the Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas .

Although I was hesitant to dive headfirst into a weeklong cruise, I figured a few days of sunshine in the middle of Minnesota winter would do me good.

Plus, cruises are as popular as ever — and I was curious to see if they actually lived up to the hype.

Well, my vacation wasn't so sunny after all, and I have zero desire to book another cruise.

The weather was awful — and we had to evacuate our first port

It rained on five of the seven days of my cruise, including all three port days.

So, we scrapped our plans to visit beautiful beaches on St. Thomas and St. Maarten and instead slogged through puddles to check out local shops.

We also had to evacuate early on our first port day at Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas due to an incoming storm.

My friend and I got in a couple of hours of cloudy beach time that day, but we headed back to the ship when it started sprinkling.

On our way back, Royal Caribbean announced we were leaving the island early. I appreciate the cruise putting our safety first, but I was still bummed.

We had unusually rough seas throughout the entire cruise

Having never been on a cruise, I had no idea what to expect in terms of motion and whether I'd get sea sick .

My doctor prescribed a scopolamine patch as a precaution to prevent sea sickness, but I had a negative reaction to it and had to remove it. Still, I figured I'd be fine since Wonder of the Seas is a large ship, and I'd heard you don't feel as much movement on larger ships .

Well, I felt a lot of movement. And I wasn't alone.

Because we experienced some rougher seas, we felt more motion on the ship than is typical, according to conversations with seasoned fellow cruisers on board and comments from the captain.

One night it was so bad that many of us had trouble walking in a straight line down the hallway. Thankfully, other than a couple of hours of nausea I attribute to too much wine and not enough food, I didn't get sick to my stomach.

But that weird sensation of swaying and rocking got to me.

Motion sickness followed me home

Unfortunately, I could still feel some rocking and swaying after we disembarked. Even after returning home, the feeling didn't go away.

My brain knew I was on solid ground, but I felt like I was still on the cruise ship battling rough waves.

As it turns out, I'd developed "land sickness," also known as mal de débarquement syndrome , where you feel as though you're still swaying on the ship once you get off.

Although it's somewhat rare , it's a form of reverse motion sickness that can last for months or even years after a cruise (or other triggering event).

So far, anti-nausea medication and ginger ale haven't helped much.

As I sit and write this over two weeks later, I'm still rocking, swaying, and bobbing. Although I'm slowly getting better, it's definitely not fun.

I'm avoiding cruises from now on

I had some great laughs with friends on board despite the rough seas and lack of sunshine. A lot of what I experienced probably isn't the norm and maybe I was just unlucky.

But considering I wasn't even sailing during hurricane season in the Caribbean, I don't want to roll the dice again and try another sailing.

One bad experience culminating with motion sickness on dry land is enough to make me want to avoid any cruises in the future.
