3 Tokyo Yakatabune Boat Cruises: Enjoy an Unforgettable Dinner on a Traditional Japanese Boat
Planning on visiting Tokyo in the summertime? Yakatabune , or traditional houseboats, are a wonderful part of every Japanese summer . People don their yukata and get on an atmospheric boat to gaze at the stars, enjoy food and drink, and even watch performances or have a big summer party. We have compiled Tokyo's top three yakatabune experiences that let you get a real taste of summer in Tokyo!
Funasei: Sailing around Odaiba
For Japanese people, the word "yakatabune" often invokes the image of renting a houseboat. Recently, several companies have started offering yakatabune "passenger boats" that provide space for larger groups. Funasei is one such company.
Their passenger course can be booked for two people and more - look forward to enjoying the beautiful scenery of Odaiba , the Sumida River , and Tokyo Skytree for 2 hours and 45 minutes! This extraordinary experience is available for 10,000 yen per person, a price that also includes all-you-can-eat-and-drink - both soft drinks and alcoholic beverages!
The food is also excellent, offering an abundant choice of Japanese dishes such as tempura , sushi , and more. Please check the dates of this course on Funasei's official website .
Stand on the deck and let the pleasant night wind cool you down as you gaze over the sparkling lights of Tokyo Bay - a scenery that is sure to make great memories! Funasei also offers a yukata rental between June and September, including getting dressed by a pro, for 4,500 yen per person. For the real Japanese summer experience, be sure to make use of that offer! (*Advance reservation is required. An English reservation page is available on the official homepage.)
- Address 1-16-8 Kitashinagawa, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo-to 140-0001
Website: www.funasei.com/english
Hamadaya: Explore Odaiba and Tokyo Skytree by Yakatabune
Yakatabune Hamadaya has eight piers all around Tokyo, including Asakusa , Kitasenju, and Odaiba . This houseboat company also offers larger passenger boats that can be booked for groups of two or more.
We especially recommend this course for smaller groups who look for a unique way of sightseeing in Tokyo! Choose between two routes: the Sumida River and Odaiba Route, and the Skytree Round Trip. If you want to see the magnificent Tokyo Skytree from up close, option 2 is the right course for you. (The sights on the route may change depending on the departure and arrival locations.)
We recommend the course that starts at Kitasenju, because a shop called Mine Kitasenju offers yukata rental for a mere 3,240 yen per person there. Enjoy a full traditional set of yukata, obi (belt), pouch, and geta (sandals), put on by Japanese yukata pros!
On top of that, Hamadaya is also famous as "gourmet yakatabune." Every course comes with a rich selection of delicious food. From July to September, the " Summer Festival" is taking place, offering seasonal dishes, appetizers, and desserts (10,260 yen per person; price varies by date of departure). Seasonal cooking is an inherent part of Japanese cuisine , so this will surely be a great culinary experience! There are three types of yakatabune used on these cruises: the luxurious Hamadamaru #28, furnished with tables, and the 30-meter long Hamadamaru #18 with beautiful tatami are two of them. Said Hamadamaru #28 is the fleet's newest ship and has a wonderfully sophisticated atmosphere while keeping the charm of a traditional yakatabune. No matter which ship you board, look forward to relaxing on the promenade deck, freely accessible to every passenger. This deck offers a prime panoramic view of the beautiful night scenery of Tokyo.
- Address 1-14-5 Yanagihara, Adachi-ku, Tokyo-to 120-0022

Riverboat Mizuha: A Charming Choice for Smaller Groups
The last yakatabune option that we want to introduce to you is called Mizuha. This is definitely the best choice for smaller groups of friends or family who want to enjoy their Japanese houseboat experience in a more private setting! The Riverboat Mizuha can be rented all by yourself to up to 12 people.
The price for such a reservation starts at 45,000 yen (tax included) for 60 minutes and can be extended in intervals of 15 minutes. This price doesn't change, even if you board the ship with a full party of 10 people. This means that for 10 people, this 60-minute experience will cost each person 4,500 yen - which is an absolute steal. If you decide to cruise for two hours, the price rises to 89,000 yen in total. The best thing: you can freely decide where you want to sail your yakatabune! If you have a particular theme in mind, such as Tokyo's best sightseeing spots or routes with quiet waters, Mizuha will plan the perfect course for you!
The ship's tables are movable, so you can either face them outward to enjoy the passing scenery or face them inward to enjoy each other's company. Both heater and air conditioning are installed, making your yakatabune trip incredibly cozy! Mizuha houseboats are also known for the observation deck at the front of the boat. Outward-facing tables and chairs invite a leisure chat while watching the scenery passing by.
Food and drinks are not included in this plan, so you can just bring any things you'd like to eat and drink with you or book the catering service for an extra fee. Mizuha takes care of the trash, so there's no need to worry about cleaning up afterward either!

Yakatabune Tokyo Dinner Cruise with All-You-Can-Drink Plan
Amazing Experience!
First yakatabune experience - 2 thumbs up, noli from florida, pick-up not available, what to expect, travelers interested in this activity also viewed, traveler's photos.
Overall rating
Very good experience, unlimited food and drinks plus theres karaoke after dinner. Good with big groups though, the more people the more fun. Arigato for the nice experience!
The pier was easy to find, and there were several boats lined up and we were so excited and tried to ride each one, there was a man at the pier who finally told us which one was our boat. It was funny watching everyon ... e coming down the earlier boats because they all looked tipsy! When we got on board, the tables were already set with appetizers, and each table was assigned to a group. It was very interesting to see what each of the appetizers were, then we noticed a pot that had sukiyaki ready to cook!!! We tried the peach plum cocktail (all you can drink!) We got served yummy shrimp, fish, veg tempura, then the candle under the sukiyaki pot was lit, as the boat sailed towards Odaiba. There was a stop at at Odaiba for a chance at amazing cityscape photos. By the time the candle burned out the sukiyaki was done - and it was very good and tasted clean and fresh. Then there was a fun lion dance performed by one of the waiters - which was funny and quite entertaining. All in all a fun first time experience for a Yakatabune cruise - would recommend you try it if you've never done one before.
An unforgettable anniversary celebration
The boat staff provided great service, and the food and drinks were delicious! During the cruise, there were a couple times when we were allowed up on top of the boat, to look at the Tokyo Skytree and also near the Yokoh ... ama Marina area. And there was also a traditional Japanese "lion dance", the first of which I had ever seen in person. It was a unique opportunity to bring the boat guests and crew together. My wife and I were celebrating our 6-month anniversary, and so during the last part of the cruise, the MC came up to our table to invite us in front of everyone to announce why we were celebrating, and everyone cheered for us. It was a lovely memory for us, and I appreciated the opportunity so much.

Yakatabune Dinner Cruise In Tokyo: Experience Refined Japanese Culture
Enjoy a night cruise along Sumida River and Tokyo Bay, along with excellent Japanese cuisine on a yakatabune, a traditional cruise boat. This type of culture has its roots in the Edo Period (1603-1868) and is an excellent way to experience traditional Japanese culture.
Yakatabune - A Fantastic Experience of Traditional Japanese Culture
One of the most exciting elements of Japanese culture born in the Edo period (1603 - 1868) is yakatabune culture . Yakatabune are cruise boats, either privately owned or rented occasionally.
Feudal lords in the Edo period would compete with each other in holding lavish parties on yakatabune. They would offer guests a gorgeous course of refined food and would invite famous geisha to entertain the guests during the cruise. The hosts would spend a fortune to hold a yakatabune party that would be the talk of the town.
Yakatabune culture survives today in many of Japan's river cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka or Hita , to name just a few. Courses that include dances and songs performed by geisha are quite expensive, though they allow the full cultural experience.
In this article, we introduce an affordable yakatabune dinner cruise that can be enjoyed in Tokyo . The cruise includes a dinner course of refined traditional Japanese cuisine , a ride along the Sumida River with fabulous views of Tokyo at night, and other elements that allow participants a taste of traditional yakatabune culture.
Book your Yakatabune Dinner Cruise
Content and Highlights of the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise
The Yakatabune Cruise departs from Tennozu Isle Platform 3 at 18:00. Participants should arrive at around 17:30 to the boat and do the chek-in procedures.
The boat heads first to the Odaiba area. There will be two stops on the way: one at Odaiba , offering a great view of Rainbow Bridge and the Fuji TV Building , which are both illuminated at night; the second stop is near the Eitai Bridge on the Sumida River, allowing a great view of TOKYO SKYTREE .
The best time to take photos of the beautiful views of Tokyo at night is during these stops.
A professional photographer is stationed on the yakatabune. He'll take photos of the participants making sure that both their faces and the nightscape show up clearly in the photos. The pictures are included in the participation fee and you'll be able to download them at the end of the cruise.
After a brief introduction by the organizers and the traditional opening of the sake barrel , which marks the beginning of the party in Japanese culture, the food course is served.
The course includes several Japanese dishes that are as tasty as they are gorgeous. The highlight of the menu is tempura . During yakatabune cruises in the past, they would throw a fishing net into the river. The fish caught on the day would be cooked into tempura on the spot and offered fresh to the guests.
The all-you-can-drink beverage menu includes several types of Japanese alcohol, from sake and shochu to whiskey and wine, as well as soft drinks.
The refined cuisine, the wonderful views of Tokyo at night, and socializing with other participants - all these are important elements of the yakatabune dinner cruise so take the time to enjoy everything at leisure. The cruise ends after about two hours, with the boat returning to Tennozu Isle at 20:30.
We Tried It Ourselves! Thoughts on the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise
In order to introduce the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise to our readers, we actually took part in it in December 2019.
The yakatabune boat was waiting for us at the Tennozu Isle Pier. It was decorated with beautiful traditional lanterns, gathering everyone's attention.
The cruise started with the traditional opening of the sake barrel using wooden mallets. Two volunteers were recruited from among the participants. It seemed like a lot of fun to break the sake barrel with everyone cheering around!
By this time, the boat had reached Odaiba. We went out on the deck for a few minutes to take a look at Rainbow Bridge, which looked dazzling!
The food course was brought to the tables one dish at a time. After an appetizer and sashimi artistically arranged on a boat-shaped plate, the tempura was brought it in.
Good quality tempura is soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. For this very important feature to be kept, the pieces of tempura were brought one by one. The various types of vegetable and seafood tempura were light and very flavorful. We loved it!
The course culminates with a hot pot dish and rice. A delicious dessert is brought in at the end of the meal.
After experiencing such a meal, you'll be able to understand why Edo-period people saw the food as the highlight of a yakatabune cruise. The Japanese cuisine served during such a cruise is delicious and made with so much dedication to detail.
It's around this time that the boat reaches Eitai Bridge. TOKYO SKYTREE was shining bright in the distance and both sides of the river were lined by skyscrapers full of lights.
The boat will gradually head back to Tennozu Isle along Sumida River. We passed under several bridges, and the cityscape along the river was simply breathtaking! We even spotted Tokyo Tower on the right, standing out among the bright skyscrapers - a gorgeous sight!
Remember that you can go back to your table inside the yakatabune at any time to enjoy drinks. The leisurely moments on the boat allow you to think about the Edo-period people who invented yakatabune cruises to appreciate excellent food and quality entertainment.
We felt that the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise is so much more than a night cruise in Tokyo. It is a fun and educational evening that offers an in-depth experience of this special part of Japanese culture.
Enjoy Tokyo's Night Views and Excellent Japanese Cuisine on a Yakatabune Cruise
The Yakatabune Dinner Cruise is ideal for everyone who wishes to experience refined traditional Japanese culture. This particular cruise runs through Tokyo Bay and along Sumida River, allowing wonderful views of Tokyo's vibrant skyscraper districts at night.
In addition, the cuisine and beverages are first class, made and served in accordance with the principles of refined Japanese cuisine. They are a joy for the eyes and for the palate.
If you're seeking an authentic experience of truly valuable Japanese culture, do consider taking the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise!

Eat, drink and be merry on a Japanese pleasure boat
Revel in a waterside entertainment experience that, centuries ago, was restricted only to the wealthy. Feast on traditional Japanese cuisine accompanied by free-flowing drinks on board a yakatabune pleasure boat. Though usually an evening affair, boating companies also offer yakatabune lunch cruises. Whether day or night, relish the feel of the river breeze and admire riverside views from a different vantage point while cruising Tokyo by pleasure boat. After dark, take in the spectacular sight of bright city lights from the deck of your gently cruising yakatabune.
- The food—sushi, tempura and other seasonal delicacies are typically served
- The views—especially in spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, or during the firework festivals in summer
- Belt out some classic pop and rock tunes with the onboard karaoke
A brief history of the pleasure boat
The yakatabune—historically referred to as Japanese pleasure boats— are small ships adorned with lanterns that were used to host dinner parties where guests could mingle and socialize over food and drinks. Each boat was furnished with tatami mats and low tables, and featured entertainment such as music performances and poetry recitals as the boat cruised down the river. The pastime of yakatabune first started during the Heian Era (794-1185) and was a hallmark of ostentatious luxury for feudal lords, samurai warriors, and, later, wealthy merchants. Yakatabune boat cruises opened to the masses only in the late 19th century. Historic Waterfront Areas of Tokyo
City views from the water
As your yakatabune sets sail, it is time to eat, drink and be merry. Feast on traditional Japanese cuisine such as sushi and tempura, while quenching your thirst at the all-you-can-drink bar of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. As you revel in the jolly mood onboard—karaoke is also typically available—take in the stunning riverside views and city lights. Each vessel can either be booked for a private party, or shared among a number of small groups. With the smoking area generally confined to the top deck, children can also join in the yakatabune experience (please check as this varies from ship to ship).
Try on traditional Japanese clothing
Spice up your pleasure boat ride by going dressed in traditional Japanese clothing such as a yukata—a casual summertime garment—or a jinbei—an article of loose clothing historically worn as nightwear but now also commonly seen at summer festivals. This will make for some great photographs, and children will also find the experience fun. You can either buy these outfits, especially in summer when many stores sell them at reasonable prices, or they are also available for rent. Do some research online to find the best option.
Riding the waves
Be sure to secure your yakatabune seat in advance with an online reservation, especially during the peak periods: cherry blossoms season in spring and the fireworks festival in summer. Many cruise operators offer bilingual websites, so making a booking is a fuss-free experience. The boarding points differ by service and operator, though common locations include piers along the Sumida River in Asakusa, or in the Odaiba area. Outside of the peak season, scheduled yakatabune boat cruises tend to run only in the evenings, and last about two and a half hours. Yakatabune Routes
A world of entertainment on the water
If you prefer a yakatabune lunch cruise, you'll probably need to gather up a party of 10 passengers as this is generally the minimum number required to charter a private service (that number does vary with the boat operator, so please inquire for details). Otherwise, go during the peak cherry blossom season when scheduled services also run all day long. Complete your cultural experience by opting, usually for an extra charge, for a performance by traditional Japanese geisha who are skilled in art forms like classical music, dancing, and poetry. Alternatively, take waterside entertainment up a notch by choosing a cruise with a theme, such as a ninja cruise or a fishing tour around the bay.

Yakatabune: traditional Japanese dinner cruise with a view
Eat and drink all you can as the Tokyo Bay cruise takes you to some of Tokyo's most iconic sights, including the Rainbow Bridge
Long, narrow boats lit with lanterns cruise along Tokyo’s rivers all year round. Yakatabune , directly translates to ‘house boats’, have a long history in Japan that dates back to the Heian era ( 794-1185 ). Traditionally, these boats were lavishly decorated and nobles would entertain their guests with banquets and games on board. The boats continued to be a popular vessel for entertainment after the Meiji restoration, but dwindled after World War II due to a shift in culture and heavy pollution in the waterways. The houseboats began reappearing as the economy improved towards the end of the Showa era along with the water quality in the rivers.
While yakatabune bounced back in popularity in the ‘80s, they were primarily rented by large companies to entertain important guests or clients. Recently, a number of yakatabune tours have been organised so that smaller parties of people and even individuals can experience a cruise on Japan’s oldest party boat. The Tennozu Canal Side Revitalization Association have arranged a weekly cruise to give visitors an opportunity to see the city and its waterways in a different light with a traditional tatami -floored houseboat .
The boat operates every Tuesday and departs from the Tennozu T-Lotus Pier at 7pm. For about USD124, you can embark on this stunning cruise as you eat and drink into the night. The evening opens with a kagami biraki ceremony, which involves breaking open a sake barrel with a hammer. This is a custom often seen at lavish occasions including weddings and New Year. Following this, you’ll be served food and drinks as the boat makes its way along the canals to Odaiba out at the Tokyo Bay. Drinks are unlimited, whether you’re raising glasses filled with draft beer, sake or tea to celebrate the evening.
Dinner is in the style of a traditional kaiseki meal, with an assortment of classic Japanese dishes typically seen at large-scale banquets. So expect candied sweet potatoes, braised octopus and glazed tsukune (chicken meatballs). Halfway through the meal, you’ll be served fresh seafood and vegetable tempura .
The boat makes a couple of stops throughout the evening, so attendees can take a pause from the meal to step out onto the boat’s top deck and admire the city lights. There will be a professional photographer on board to take your pictures on the top deck that you’ll be able to download after the cruise.
As you make your way around the Bay on tour, you'll pass the Olympic Village on the Harumi waterfront, where you might be able to see the latest developments of the 'smart city' project as the 2020 Olympic Games fast approaches. You'll also be able to admire some of Tokyo's classic landmarks incuding Odaiba's Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower, both of which look stunning as they light up after dark. Finally, the boat returns to Tennozu at 9.30pm.
Book your place on the next cruise here . The price includes dinner, an open bar, and a photo session.

A yakatabune is a traditional Japanese boat that dates back to the Heian period (which was from 791-1185). Typically small, low-slung and privately-owned, yakatabune have a longstanding reputation as party boats, or "pleasure boats", ferrying merrymakers around bays and along rivers while they eat, drink and enjoy the passing scenery.
Identifiable by their festive red lanterns, these roofed boats are a common sight around Tokyo Bay, as well as on the Sumida River, especially on hot summer nights. Some can be booked for the exclusive use of a private group, while others offer space onboard a shared cruise. You'll also spot yakatabune boats in other parts of Japan, notably Kyoto , where they cruise around Arashiyama.
Best Tokyo Dinner Cruises
A number of companies run dinner cruises in Tokyo (as well as daytime cruises), offering different packages and perks. You can choose from yakatabune boats or bigger, cruise-liner-type ships. Some accept reservations in English, while others are only bookable in Japanese, and don't offer any language support. A few only run cruises during summer, while others operate throughout the year.
Here are some of the most popular Tokyo boat cruise options.
1. Top Yakatabune Choice: Sumida River Dinner Cruise
This Tokyo cruise offers a window into the way the good people of Edo (that's the old name for Tokyo) liked to let their hair down. Tuck into an array of traditional Japanese dishes and enjoy unlimited drinks (alcoholic and otherwise) on a 2.5-hour trip down the Sumida River. Departing from Asakusa , you'll get views of Odaiba, Tokyo Skytree, and the city skyline.
The restaurant boat, which comes complete with traditional tatami-mat flooring, can seat up to 50 guests, making for a festive experience. It's a great way to celebrate a birthday or special occasion. Vegetarian and vegan options are available by prior arrangement. And children are welcome, making it a family-friendly cruise. 2. Tokyo Symphony Cruise
The "Tokyo Bay Cruising Restaurant Symphony" is a well-known name in the Tokyo dinner cruise game. There are two boats on the waters of Tokyo Bay, both of which are something like mini cruise liners. The Symphony Cruises run from lunchtime onwards, with separate sunset and dinner options available.
These boats are basically floating restaurants—and there is more than one eatery on each. Guests can choose from various types of food, ranging from sushi to Italian, French and more.
The Dinner Cruise sets off from Hinode Pier (near JR Hamamatsucho Station), and passes Rainbow Bridge before heading to Odaiba and other parts of Tokyo Bay. The trip takes about 2.5 hours.
3. Tokyo Nouryousen Cruise
A popular summer cruise in Tokyo, this is less of a dinner boat and more of an experience in and of itself (and often a boozy one, at that). The penultimate Tokyo party ship, the Nouryousen leaves from Takeshiba Terminal (near JR Hamamatsucho Station) and takes guests around Tokyo Bay, returning to port in just under two hours.
Dinner is a simple bento box, but drinks are unlimited, and there are often music and dance events onboard. Simple izakaya food like karaage and yakisoba is also available. You can get a discount if you wear a yukata, on designated days. The Tokyo Nouryousen operates between July and September.

A yakatabune (屋形船) is a traditional Japanese-style boat adorned with lanterns and furnished with tatami mats and low tables. They’re typically used to host parties; you can even charter them for private use. These boats are very popular among Tokyoites, especially in summer, and they’re a great way to see the city.

The History
Yakatabune originated in the Heian period (794-1185). Symbols of ostentatious luxury, they were often opulently decorated with gold, silver, and lacquer, and were used to hold lavish parties. This is why yakatabune have historically been referred to as Japanese pleasure boats. Only aristocrats such as feudal lords, high-ranking samurai, and, eventually, wealthy merchants could afford to own these boats.
During the Edo period (1603-1867), yakatabune reached the height of their popularity. Around the start of the Meiji era (1868-1912), yakatabune became more accessible to the masses.
Today, you don’t have to be a powerful elite to enjoy a yakatabune party! These are held for a variety of purposes, aside from just having fun with loved ones. Businesspeople sometimes invite clients to yakatabune parties or charter entire boats for employees, while couples have romantic dinners on board. In summer, there are several yakatabune parties that offer discounts to guests wearing yukata (summer kimono).
My first yakatabune ride
I boarded a yakatabune for a dinner cruise for the first time and loved it; the experience far exceeded my expectations! Upon arriving at the jetty, the staff checked our reservation, then guided us to the boat. (Be careful not to trip and fall into the water!)
After boarding, we had to take off our shoes; then we were guided to our table. At first, I thought that a three-hour ride was a bit much, but the time flew by so quickly! We’ve had dinner at other Japanese-style restaurants with tatami flooring before, but a Japanese-style dinner on a boat is a totally new and different experience that is worth trying at least once in your life.
The staff was friendly and polite the entire time. We loved the food and made new friends. Speaking of friends, you will definitely have a blast with your loved ones, but even if you go alone, you can also make friends on board while enjoying fantastic food and drinks!
When we sat for dinner, the table was already filled with appetizers and entrees. There was a variety of Japanese delicacies including edamame (green beans), octopus, sweet potato, and tsukune (chicken meatballs). The dinner course also includes an open bar serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, so we ordered our first drinks before setting sail and enjoying dinner.
At a yakatabune dinner, tempura is usually the signature dish. At most Japanese restaurants, tempura platters usually consist of prawns and vegetables, but this particular cruise served various types of freshly made fish tempura, which the servers brought to our table one at a time. Rice, soup, vegetables, and a delicious dessert were also part of the course.
Both sides of the yakatabune have windows, so you can contemplate and take in the views while having dinner. Staff pointed to and explained the main points of interest and landmarks that we passed by.
The boat makes a total of two stops throughout its journey. During these times, you can go up to the open-air deck to enjoy the pleasant breeze and breathtaking views. These moments are also a good time to strike up a conversation with other passengers and make new friends. Even better, a professional photographer on board can help take your photos and immortalize the moment.
Tokyo Bay is one of my favorite places in Tokyo because I love the views from Odaiba. With its priceless night view, this is one of Tokyo’s most attractive areas. I enjoy watching the boats afloat, with their colorful lanterns lighting up the water. But seeing these yakatabune up close and being surrounded by them, instead of just seeing them from afar, is even better!
It’s really stunning to see Tokyo Bay and the Rainbow Bridge reflected on the dark water, with Odaiba imposing, modern, and sometimes quirky buildings behind you. If you look closely, you can even see more of the cityscape, as well as Tokyo’s famous landmarks: Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree!
The entertainment
Yakatabune cruises offer not only good food and beautiful views, but also great entertainment. These boats were originally created for pleasure, after all. Even today, yakatabune cruises typically put on a show, whether it’s a traditional cultural performance, or musical entertainment.
The cruise I joined offered modern Japanese entertainment. Before dinner, we kicked off the cruise with kagami-biraki, a traditional sake barrel-opening ceremony. Then, over our delicious dinner, we shared laughs with a Japanese comedian. It was a lot of fun. Truly, there’s so much you can do on a yakatabune cruise!
