Travel + Leisure

If you’re looking for a lightweight, portable, and versatile entertainment station on the go, pack a tablet on your next trip. Tablets are great for catching up on Netflix while on the airplane, reading eBooks, gaming (both for you and the kids), and simple browsing. Sure, a smartphone can do all of those things, but the screen is small and it’s nice to have a dedicated play device. Tablets are also a great alternative to a travel laptop as a way to sprinkle a little digital nomading into your trip, especially for creatives who can benefit from the extra features of a device like the Apple iPad Pro.

In our research, we found that the most well-known tablet, the entry-level Apple iPad (9th generation), remains the best option, and it will save you some cash compared to the latest version. Scroll down for more options from Samsung, OnePlus, and more.

Best Overall

Apple ipad (9th generation).

It’s a great all-around device for most travelers and you can often find it on sale.

It’s not a great option for work, unless you go for an upgraded model.

Yes, Apple came out with a brand-new iPad (10th generation) in October 2022, but we still think the 9th generation is great for most travelers, especially if you can find it on sale. The newest iPad does indeed have more features — including a larger screen (10.9 inches versus 10.2 inches), a faster chip (Intel A14 versus A13), a better rear camera (12MP versus 8MP), and it uses the new USB-C connector rather than the now-outdated Lightning port. The only factor to consider then is whether you truly need all those features or not.

The 9th generation iPad is plenty good enough to watch a movie on the plane, check some emails, and occupy the kids at dinner with the wide array of iOS games (that are much better on a tablet than the iPhone). Plus, it’s usually about $100 less than the latest device.

It’s possible to upgrade the iPad to get more storage and 5G/LTE connectivity, but if you need more power consider the iPad Air or iPad Pro , which can function as a travel laptop.

The Details: 9.8 x 6.8 x 0.29 inches | 1.07 pounds | 64GB/256GB

Best Android

Oneplus pad 11.61-inch lcd display.

It has great battery life and can work as a laptop in a pinch.

There’s no 5G/LTE capability.

If you’re looking for the versatility of an iPad but prefer to stay within the Android ecosystem, check out One Plus’s Pad. Released in 2023, the tablet has efficient speed for your everyday traveling needs as well as plenty of storage (128GB). But what really stands out is its impressive battery life, which can last for more than 50 days on standby, and about 13 hours of constant use. It’s also a sleek-looking device overall that comes in a unique color: halo green.

An advantage of the OnePlus Pad over its closest competitor, the Google Pixel Tablet , is that it’s capable of becoming a 2-in-1 laptop if you add the Magnetic Keyboard (sold separately), and you can charge it by plugging it in rather than lugging around Google’s speaker charger, which would be awkward to travel with.

If you’re looking for an Android tablet with more power and 5G/LTE connectivity, consider the Samsung Galaxy S8 .

The Details: 10.2 x 7.5 x 0.26 inches | 1.22 pounds | 128GB

Best Compact

Apple ipad mini 2021 (6th generation).

B & H Photo Video

It’s incomparable in terms of portability, and ideal for eBooks.

It’s not the best laptop replacement.

In Apple’s world, smaller doesn’t mean weaker, nor cheaper. The iPad Mini costs the same or even more as the latest iPad (10th generation) and has a smaller 8.3-inch screen (compared to 10.9 inches for the iPad). But it’s more powerful with an A15 chip and critically has an anti-reflective coating over the screen, which is an important feature for readers as traditional tablet screens can be tough on the eyes. It’s also about 7 ounces lighter than the iPad and of course smaller, so it’s much better in terms of portability.

If you’re an artist, the iPad Mini has another key feature — you can use the latest Apple Pencil (2nd generation) , which doesn’t work with the entry-level iPad. Conversely, the Mini is not compatible with Apple’s Magic Keyboard for iPad , but it does work with other Bluetooth keyboards.

The Details: 7.69 x 5.31 x 0.25 inches | 0.65 pounds | 64GB, 256GB

Best Durability

Oukitel 10-inch android tablet.

It can take a beating and doesn’t sacrifice performance.

It’s twice the weight of an iPad.

The frustrating thing about most tablets is the battery runs out quickly (it takes a lot of energy to power such big screens), plus they’re prone to cracking. Enter the Oukitel RT2. This tablet is built to last with a rugged protective case, a back handle grip and an IP68 water and dust-resistance rating which means it can handle being submerged in 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. It also has an extremely impressive 20,000 mAh battery which can last for 900 hours on standby or 15 hours of video. The battery is so strong that the tablet can even act as a power bank if your smartphone or smartwatch runs out of juice.

The Oukitel RT2 doesn’t sacrifice other useful features either. It has a 10.1-inch HD screen as well as an excellent rear camera for a tablet at 16MP. Last but certainly not least, this tablet is cheaper than any regularly-priced iPad and most other Android tablets, making it a strong option for any adventurous traveler.

The Details: 10.3 x 7.2 x 0.7 inches | 2.2 pounds | 128GB

Best Features

Apple 11-inch ipad pro m2 chip.

B H Photo Video Audio

It’s the ultimate companion for digital nomads and creatives.

It’s a bit much if you simply want to use it for videos, simple gaming, or browsing.

If you want the very best iPad available for travel, especially if you plan to use it for work on the road, then look no further than the iPad Pro. While it has the same-sized display as the iPad (10th generation), it’s much faster with an Apple M2 chip — so it’s just as fast as the latest MacBook Air. That means you can very reasonably use it as your travel laptop, though you’ll need to get the Magic Keyboard for iPad and potentially the Apple Pencil (2nd Generation) stylus if that’s useful for you. The iPad Pro is also ideal for video conferencing as it has a 12MP front-facing camera and can support high-speed gaming. It also allows you to use Apple’s LiDAR (light detection and ranging) feature, which isn’t available on other iPad models.

You can upgrade the iPad Pro to come with cellular data, more storage space, and a larger screen with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio as well as improved Liquid Retina XDR display.

The Details: 9.74 x 7.02 x 0.23 inches | 1.03 pounds | 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB

Best Budget

Amazon fire 7.

It’s a great starter tablet for occasional users.

It doesn’t work with many Android or iOS apps.

If you’re not sure if you really need a tablet and just want to try it out, check out the Amazon Fire. We love this tablet for its simplicity: it's a compact device that allows users to watch movies on Netflix, listen to music on Spotify, and read books with the Kindle app. However, you’ll also be locked into Amazon’s app store, so many iOS and Android apps won’t work. It’s also not the speediest device with just a Quad-core 2.0 GHz processor and 2GB or RAM, and has a small, 7-inch display (though if those are your concerns Amazon sells larger models as well as the quicker Fire Max 11 ). But for the price and size, it gets the job done on the road.

The Detail s: 7.52 x 4.53 x 0.42 inches | 0.62 pounds | 16GB

Best Lightweight

Samsung galaxy tab a7.

It’s light, affordable, and does the trick for basic use.

It only comes with three years of operating system updates.

For the best combination of portability, price, and compatibility with the Android app store, check out this entry-level tablet from Samsung. While it can't quite compete with the iPad Mini, it’s a fraction of the price and weighs just a few ounces more. Its 8.7-inch display is plenty big enough for reading and the quality is just fine for movies and gaming. And if you want to pay extra for LTE compatibility, or add up to 1TB of extra storage via microSD, you can do that too.

The De tails: 4.91 x 0.31 x 8.37 inches | 0.82 pounds | 32GB

Tips for Buying a Tablet

Think about how you’ll use it while traveling.

If you just want a tablet for reading, watching movies, gaming and browsing the Internet, you probably don’t need something super expensive. That said, if you plan to bring a tablet instead of a laptop, opt for a device that at least has sufficient battery life and connectivity for a portable keyboard .

Consider how you’ll keep it protected

If you take your tablet traveling, make sure it’s protected with a padded sleeve or case that covers the screen, as well as a handle, perhaps, so you don’t drop it.

A tablet gives you more screen size for reading, watching movies, and playing games. It’s also a wonderful tool for creatives since users can draw using a stylus. Digital nomads and artists can also benefit from a tablet as a lighter replacement for a laptop and as a way to show off their work while standing up at a conference or trade show.

Just as you'd stow away a laptop, tablets should stay in your in-cabin luggage and be readily accessible to take out at airport security. And while there’s no official TSA rule against putting a tablet in the overhead, chances are you’d like to use it during your flight as well, so consider stashing this in a personal item instead of a larger suitcase.

Hi   Think I am getting a bit of a wuss:)   Never had sea sickness before but we are sailing from the UK for the first time thro BoB and I was wondering what everybody thinks is the best medication / prevention.   Got Sea Bands but want to take some tablets with us just in case.   Thanks

I just bought Dramamine tables (8 per roll). (non-drowsy). NOT ORIGINAL. Those will "knock you out". My Dr. and Pharmacist recommended it, better Bonnine. Rhey said take 1 about 2 hours before sailing. If needed, 1 in a.m. and 1 late p.m. Supposed to work for 24 hours so I'll wait and see if I really need it at night or at all. Never used to! Doing this as a precaution in case seas are a little rough sailing out of NY.

Leaving Sunday 8/29 for NCL Dawn cruise to Bermuda....Hope Ms. Danielle the Hurricane, will not be near us.

Safe sails!

Try Stugeron, they seem to work for the people I know who have taken them.

Stugeron worked like a dream when my children were travel sick be it car, boat, coach or plane! Looking back I am amazed we ever went anywhere!!!! I am taking them with us on our first cruise as a precautionary measure (Stugeron that is, leaving the kids at home!!!)

CRUISIN LINDA

CRUISIN LINDA

I always take Kwells. The first day on the Thomson Dream in May was very rough and it was Captain's dinner. I felt awful and we were down for 1st sitting:eek:

I phoned reception to see if we could change and she said yes. I took two tablets and felt fine by 8.30 and really enjoyed the dinner:)

Cheers Everybody,

Down to the old Chemist and get a packet of each that you all suggest, just to be sure:)

Med this September and then BoB next April.

As I say we have never had the problem before but BoB

Take it easy and thanks again.

Sturgeon for us too - never have any problems when crossing the Bay of Biscay in F8-9s.

I don't know what the active ingredient is but Boots Travel Calm tablets worked a treat for both myself and the wife. We felt rough after brekkie - took a pill and had a lie down - 20 mins later we both said 'I feel better' and that was it. We were fine.

However did you know that marmalade was once an old sea dogs method - hence the name mar(mer) malade.

Yes - stick with the Boots Travel Calm pills !!

grannygristle

Stugeron are great if you take them in time (pack says 2 hours before travel - a bit late if you're already feeling sick)

On our first cruise hubby was given the injection as he was 'poorly', the stuff given to him was Phenergan. On our subsequent cruises I got Phenergan tablets 25mg from the chemist (ask at the counter) and none of us have ever been sea sick since. You can also get Phenergan in liquid form. Works for us.

I wouldn't take anything else now.

Popsey Wopsey

Don,t buy anything until you know its going to be R&R,ask then at reception for a tablet, they know best .

Try not to think you will be ill,sit midships ,low down, keep your mind occupied, don,t go back to your cabin if you can help it.A tip from a sea fisherman, eat some toast or an apple and don,t overload your tummy, don,t drink lots of water but you can have a brandy.

Stop worrying and enjoy your cruise.

I,m sure you will be fine .BOB is mostly kind.:D

Cheers PW the brandy sounds just the ticket, does it work with Glenfiddich:)

A few of those and bring on the BoB:D

If you think one or three whiskies might help ,why not ,its your holiday and Freds. drink prices are good,no service charge.

When the ship has "motion on the Ocean" after three whiskies you will be able to walk straight whilst everyone else has a wobble on.:D:D:D:D

The PP is correct, all this talk about sea sickness is even making me feel funny and I never ever suffer - was even ok in the roughest sees I have ever seen in Antarctica a few years ago. The more you think about it the more you are likely to get it.

Of course the finest prevention for SS is not to go!!

hi there we will be on ventura on 4th sept...first time going through bob..

now having some regrets.....someone put a blog on that it was bad last night...

may buy all the remedies and a few brandies..

BORDER REIVER

BORDER REIVER

I had a really bad cruise on a small ship about 10 yrs ago, it rolled all over the place and it put me off completely until recently.

We did a short cruise on Queen Victoria in December and I was armed with all sorts of stuff. We had a couple of packs of ginger snaps, which we ate before sailing, early morning and late evening. These lasted a couple of days and we didn't need anything after that. This year, we went on Aurora to Greenland and Iceland and followed the same routine, with the addition of ginger chews from a health food shop. Again, after a couple of days we stopped taking anything and despite force 9 / 10 storm between Iceland and Greenland, we never even noticed the movement, even though the supplies of paper bags got used quickly by other passengers. My stugeron pills are still unused. For us, ginger seems to work best - but I've been told it's also down to the design of each ship as well.

Hi Everybody,

Am not talking myself into SS but wanted to be prepared:)

The ginger sounds just the job.

I remember on one FO cruise, one of our first I think, I said to my wife as we waited in line for the Capatin it feels like I am swaying I think I am going to pass out and everybody laughed as it was the slight movement of the ship and I had forgotten we were on a cruise:)

Ginger will probably be all you need, we use it at home if anyone has a queasy stomach - besides, ginger biscuits are lovely - but, we always take some kind of back-up, just in case. I cannot reccommend any of the alternatives as we've never had to use them, but they obviously work for some folk as many posts on here show.

Enjoy your cruise

  • 6 months later...

Always come home with our package of preventions intact! Have had some pretty rough seas with cyclones this season and years ago. [Around Australia and Pacfic]

Found that fresh air, looking at the horizon and eating little and often the first two days while my balance gets adjusted does the trick. Mind you when I come home for a week my house keeps rocking as does the shopping centres! LOL:p

Safe sails!

Ginger? That's enough to make me feel sick!

Hyoscine for travel sickness Joy Rides, Kwells, Scopoderm

Hyoscine for travel sickness

Joy rides, kwells, scopoderm, in this article, about hyoscine, before taking hyoscine, how to use hyoscine, getting the most from your treatment, can hyoscine cause problems, how to store hyoscine, important information about all medicines.

Hyoscine is an effective medicine for travel sickness . It works by preventing the confusing messages going to your brain.

There are a number of different brands of tablet available which contain hyoscine as a salt, called hyoscine hydrobromide. You can buy these without a prescription at pharmacies. There are two strengths of tablets available: 300 microgram tablets for adults, and 150 microgram tablets for children. The dose for younger children will require halving a tablet.

There is also a product called Scopoderm® 1.5 mg patch. This is a patch for people aged 10 years or over. You stick the patch on to the skin behind your ear 5-6 hours before your journey, and then remove it at the end of the journey. The patch releases hyoscine through your skin and into your bloodstream.

One of the other effects of hyoscine is that it causes a dry mouth. It is sometimes prescribed by doctors for this reason, rather than to prevent travel sickness.

There is also a similar-sounding medicine called hyoscine butylbromide. This is an antispasmodic medicine which is used to relieve pain caused by tummy (abdominal) cramps. There is more information about this in a separate medicine leaflet called Hyoscine butylbromide tablets .

To make sure this is the right treatment for you, before you (or your child) start taking hyoscine, it is important that your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are unwell and have a high temperature (fever).
  • If you have digestive system problems such as reflux disease, diarrhoea, or ulcerative colitis.
  • If you have an eye condition called glaucoma.
  • If you have high blood pressure, a fast heart rate, or any other heart problems.
  • If you have problems with your liver, kidneys or prostate gland.
  • If you have epilepsy.
  • If you have a condition causing muscle weakness, called myasthenia gravis.
  • If you have Down's syndrome.
  • If you are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.
  • Before you start this treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about hyoscine, including a full list of the side-effects which you may experience from taking it.
  • For adults and children over 10 years of age: 150-300 micrograms.
  • For those aged 4-10 years: 75-150 micrograms.
  • For those aged 3-4 years: 75 micrograms.
  • You should take a dose of tablets 30-60 minutes before the start of the journey, and then repeat the dose after six hours if needed. There is a maximum number of tablets that can be taken in any 24-hour period, so remember to check the directions on the label carefully to make sure that you (or your child) do not take more than the recommended daily amount.
  • Read the label on the pack carefully to see whether the tablets should be sucked or chewed, or simply swallowed with a drink of water.
  • If you have been prescribed Scopoderm® 1.5 mg patches:
  • Stick one patch to the skin just behind your ear 5-6 hours before the start of your journey and remember to remove it after your arrival.
  • The effect of the patch can last up to 72 hours, so it is suitable for people taking long journeys.
  • Once removed, fold the patch in half so it sticks together and dispose of it carefully.
  • Remember to wash your hands after handling the patches, and also it is important to clean behind your ear after you have removed the patch. This is to make sure you remove any remaining traces of hyoscine from your skin.
  • Do not apply more than one patch at a time and do not cut the patches unless your doctor or a pharmacist tells you to.
  • Hyoscine can make you sleepy, and if you are using the patches, you may still feel sleepy the following day. If this happens, do not drive and do not use tools or machines until you feel well again. Also, avoid drinking alcohol, as this will increase the feelings of sleepiness.
  • When you buy any medicines, you should always check with a pharmacist that they are safe to take alongside your other medicines. This is particularly important with hyoscine because it can increase the side-effects from some other treatments.
  • Looking out of a window or sitting with your head tilted slightly backwards.
  • Taking regular breaks in your journey to have some fresh air and drink some cold water.
  • Breathing deeply and slowly while you listen to music.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains some of the most common ones associated with hyoscine. You will find a full list in the manufacturer's information leaflet supplied with your medicine. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following continue or become troublesome.

Important: on rare occasions more serious side-effects can occur when using hyoscine hydrobromide patches (Scopoderm ® patches). This is more likely if using the patches in a way the manufacturer did not intend, for example cutting patches or using more than one patch. People using hyoscine patches, or their carers, should be alert for signs that the dose is too high. These can include: a high temperature (fever), difficulty passing urine, confusion, disorientation, seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations), fits or convulsions, reduced consciousness and difficulty breathing. If you notice any of these symptoms, remove the patch(es) immediately and seek medical help.

  • Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Dmitri Jurowski

Moscow City Symphony-Russian Philharmonic/Dmitri Jurowski – review

G lorying in a name that seems to have been chosen by a very large committee, the Moscow City Symphony-Russian Philharmonic is a smart modern orchestra based in the city's glitzy modern concert hall . Judging by its London debut, however, it is old-school where it counts.

Its chief conductor is Dmitri Jurowski , and his appearance meant there would be a Jurowski on the Festival Hall podium four times in a week; big brother Vladimir was in the audience to cheer him on. The programme was Russian and proud. Extracts from Prokofiev's ballet Cinderella immediately introduced a distinctive sound, soft-edged but hefty, with well-blended strings underpinned by weighty low woodwind; the rasp of the bass clarinet and contrabassoon were to become gratifyingly familiar sounds.

But not so much in Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto, in which the orchestra seemed to be consciously ceding focus to Alexander Ghindin 's piano playing. While Ghindin was all offhand, unfussy brilliance, the orchestra were neat and contained – except, that is, for the opening of the slow movement, when the flute phrasing made the melody sound positively flirty, and Ghindin responded in smooth, almost louche style. His encore, Rachmaninov's G minor Prelude, whizzed by in a flurry of sonorous chords, but the richness with which he brought out the secondary melodies in the middle section spoke of attention to detail worn lightly.

That was just a taster for the main Rachmaninov event – the colossus that is the Symphony No 2, approached by Jurowski with a certain lightness of touch and all the better for it. It was because he began the third movement so gently and at so flowing a pace that he was able to make such an impact with the sense of stillness after its climax. The second movement was crisp, the finale buoyant – and the encore, the Infernal Dance from Stravinsky's Firebird, was a flamboyant signoff from an orchestra confident of hitting its mark.
