How to Book TUI River Cruise Excursions – A Complete Guide

Planning a river cruise is an exciting experience, as it allows you to explore new destinations and immerse yourself in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. One crucial aspect of any cruise is the selection of excursions, which provide the opportunity to delve deeper into the culture, history, and natural wonders of each port of call. When it comes to booking TUI river cruise excursions, it’s essential to have a comprehensive guide that will walk you through the process and ensure that you make the most of your time ashore.

Can You Pre Book Excursions on Marella Cruises?

When it comes to booking excursions on Marella Cruises, you’ve a few options. One of the easiest and most convenient ways is to pre-book your excursions on the TUI Group website. TUI is a well-known German leisure, travel, and tourism company, and they offer a variety of cruise options through their Marella Cruises brand. By booking your excursions ahead of time, you can ensure that you secure your spot and get the best prices available.

Another option for booking excursions is to do so onboard the ship with the Destination Services team. However, it’s important to note that these onboard bookings can fill up quickly, so you may not always be able to get the exact excursion you’d in mind. If you’ve your heart set on a specific excursion, it’s highly recommended to pre-book to guarantee your spot.

When booking your excursions, be sure to consider your budget, interests, and the ports of call on your cruise itinerary. Some excursions may be more suited for adventure enthusiasts, while others may be better for history buffs or those looking for a relaxing day at the beach. Take the time to research and understand each excursion option before making your final decision.

However, if you prefer to wait until you’re onboard the ship, make sure to do so as early as possible to increase your chances of getting the excursion you want. Regardless of how you choose to book, be sure to plan ahead and make your cruise experience even more memorable with exciting shore excursions.

Tips for Choosing the Best Shore Excursions on a Marella Cruise

When booking shore excursions on a Marella Cruise, there are a few tips to keep in mind in order to choose the best options for your trip:

1. Research the destinations: Before booking, take the time to research the destinations you’ll be visiting. Look for historical sites, natural wonders, or activities that interest you.

2. Read reviews: Check online reviews from previous travelers who’ve taken the shore excursions you’re considering. Look for feedback on the quality of the tours, the tour guides, and the overall experience.

3. Consider your interests: Think about your personal preferences and interests when choosing shore excursions. Are you more interested in cultural experiences, adventurous activities, or relaxation on a beautiful beach?

4. Check the duration: Take note of the duration of each shore excursion to ensure it fits within your schedule. Some excursions may be half-day trips, while others may last the entire day.

5. Budget accordingly: Consider your budget when selecting shore excursions. Some may be more expensive than others, so prioritize the activities that are most important to you.

6. Book in advance: To secure your spot on popular shore excursions, it’s advisable to book in advance. Some excursions may have limited availability, so early booking is recommended.

By following these tips, you can choose the best shore excursions on a Marella Cruise that align with your interests and make your trip even more memorable.

When it comes to planning your cruise, it’s important to know how far in advance you can book various activities and amenities. Luckily, most cruise lines allow you to reserve shore excursions online up to eight months before your trip (or even a year in advance for world cruises). Dining options open up about a year out or whenever your cruise is booked, while spa reservations can be made approximately six months ahead of your embarkation date. With these timelines in mind, you can start coordinating your cruise experience well in advance and ensure you don’t miss out on any sought-after activities.

How Far in Advance Can I Book Shore Excursions?

Booking shore excursions for your TUI River Cruise can be an exciting part of your vacation planning process. To ensure you secure your desired experiences, it’s advisable to book them well in advance.

This extended advance booking period allows guests embarking on these extensive global voyages to carefully plan their shore excursions in various ports of call, covering a wide range of destinations and experiences.

This allows you to secure dining times, preferred restaurants, and seating arrangements in advance, ensuring you can enjoy delightful meals throughout your journey.

If pampering yourself in the spa is an important element of your vacation, you can also make advance reservations for spa treatments. TUI typically allows guests to book spa treatments up to six months before their embarkation date. This advance booking option ensures that you’ve the opportunity to reserve your preferred treatments and times, allowing for moments of relaxation and rejuvenation during your river cruise experience.

Most shore excursions can be reserved around eight months before sailing, providing ample time to plan and secure your preferred activities. Dining reservations can be made up to a year in advance, while spa reservations open up about six months before embarkation.

While it’s true that many cruise fares include a range of amenities and activities, such as meals, entertainment, and access to certain facilities, there are often additional options and experiences available for an extra cost. These can include excursions to explore ports of call, dining at specialty restaurants, indulging in spa treatments, enjoying cocktails and soda, accessing Wi-Fi, and more.

Do You Have to Pay Extra for Cruise Excursions?

When it comes to booking TUI River Cruise excursions, it’s important to understand whether or not youll have to pay extra. While many aspects of your cruise fare are included, such as meals and entertainment, there are additional experiences that may come at an added cost.

One of the most popular extras are shore excursions, which allow you to explore the various ports of call along your river cruise itinerary. These excursions often offer unique opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture and history. Whether it’s a guided walking tour, a visit to a historical landmark, or a wine tasting experience, these excursions can greatly enhance your cruise experience.

In addition to shore excursions, you may also choose to indulge in specialty restaurants that aren’t included in your fare. These dining venues often offer a more intimate and refined experience, with gourmet cuisine and exceptional service. While there’s usually a surcharge for dining at these specialty restaurants, many cruisers find them worth the additional cost for the elevated dining experience.

If relaxation is a top priority for you, you might consider booking spa treatments. Whether it’s a rejuvenating massage, a revitalizing facial, or a pampering body treatment, the onboard spa is the perfect place to unwind and recharge. These treatments typically come at an extra cost, but they can be a worthwhile indulgence for those seeking ultimate relaxation during their cruise.

For those who enjoy a refreshing cocktail or an ice-cold soda, it’s important to note that these beverages are often not included in your cruise fare. Most cruise lines offer beverage packages that allow you to enjoy unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for a set fee. These packages can be a great value if you plan on indulging in drinks throughout your cruise.

Lastly, many cruisers find it essential to stay connected with Wi-Fi during their time at sea. While most cruise ships offer Wi-Fi, it’s often not included in the standard fare. Instead, you may need to purchase internet packages that allow you to stay connected and access the web, check emails, and stay in touch with loved ones back home. It’s important to note that the cost of Wi-Fi packages can vary depending on the cruise line and the length of your voyage.

On our Tui river cruise we chose to take three shore excursions and explored independently in the other ports. The quality of our excursions were excellent but it can depend on your tour guides.

You can take a look at the excursions we did with Tui River Cruises on our Eastern Danube river cruise on Tui Skyla in the videos below.

In our ‘Cruising the Iron Gates’ video we took an excursion to the Lepenski Vir archeological site before visiting the Golubac Fortress where the river ship met us.

In the video below, we visit Vukovar, Croatia where we went on a walking tour of the town to learn about its history from a local tour guide.

Tui River Cruises Excursions Tips to Remember

  • Book your excursions as far in advance as possible so that you don’t miss out on particular ones you really want to do
  • If you have restricted mobility, read the difficulty rating and description carefully to decide if it’s suitable and you will enjoy it
  • Take excursions that allow you to try local food, drink and learn about local culture
  • Carry some cash for tipping tour guides and bus drivers
  • Don’t be scared to ask your tour guides questions, they are usually local and love to tell you about their home town or city

Shore excursions: What new cruisers need to know

Erica Silverstein

The fun of a cruise is equal parts what you do on board and what you do on shore. Cruise lines offer a full schedule of shore excursions to help you make the most of your time in port. However, the process of choosing and booking tours can be overwhelming for new cruisers.

I've taken shore excursions around the world, both ship-run and independent, and spent many days in port wandering on my own. Allow me to take you through the basics of cruise shore excursions, so you can learn to have the most fun no matter what your budget is.

What is a cruise shore excursion?

A shore excursion is a group tour or activity aimed at cruise travelers who can only spend a limited time in each port they're visiting on their itinerary.

A shore excursion could be a sightseeing bus tour, a guided visit to a museum or historic site, an athletic activity (like a hike, bike ride or snorkel outing), a day at the beach or a cooking or dance class. Shore excursions typically highlight the marquee attractions or culture of the destination you're visiting. Sometimes an excursion will take you to sites within walking distance of your cruise; on other occasions, they might take you on a day trip to a nearby city.

Some shore excursions are targeted at families or can easily accommodate children. Some can accommodate passengers with mobility issues or other disabilities . Others may require a minimum level of fitness and are not suitable for everyone.

Shore excursions may be sold by your cruise line and organized with a partner provider. They can also be purchased through independent operators or third-party tour sellers.

Do you have to buy shore excursions on a cruise?

shore excursions tui

In most cases, you don't need to book a shore excursion to explore a port of call. You can simply walk off the ship and stroll into town or catch a cab to take you wherever you want to go.

However, in some destinations, a shore excursion, or independently operated guided tour, is highly encouraged. This could be in places where it's difficult to navigate as a foreigner who can't speak the language or understand street signs or where the tourism infrastructure is not yet fully developed.

Can I book a shore excursion on my own instead of through my cruise line?

Yes. I use many factors to decide whether to take a ship's tour, book an independent excursion or explore on my own in port. However, if you're a novice traveler, you might want to book ship tours exclusively because they're the simplest, easiest and most convenient options.

The benefits to a cruise line's shore excursions are that they depart from and return to the ship; you don't need to figure out where to meet a guide in a port you've never visited. Better still, should an unexpected problem (traffic, a medical emergency) occur during your outing, the ship will not leave port until all of its own tours have returned.

Independent tours, on the other hand, can be cheaper than cruise ship tours. I once saved hundreds of dollars organizing a group to go on an overnight, independently operated excursion to see Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza from Port Said, Egypt; the ship's tours were incredibly marked up. Also, if you have a particular interest, the ship might not offer a tour for the activity or attraction you're excited about.

Related: Ship-sponsored vs. independent shore excursions on cruises: Which should you book?

Some third-party operators will customize a tour for you or your group, so you can spend more time at the places you most want to see. Sometimes these tour groups are also smaller than the large cruise ship tours — which can carry 30 to 60 people in a bus — so you will spend less time waiting for everyone.

Finally, some ports are simply wonderful to walk around, popping into shops and local restaurants or bars, going where you will. I've skipped tours in places like Key West, Florida; Tallinn, Estonia; Monaco; Nassau, Bahamas; Skagway, Alaska; Geiranger, Norway; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. A map and a guidebook got me where I wanted to go.

How much are shore excursions on a cruise?

shore excursions tui

Cruise shore excursion prices vary widely depending on the cost of living in the cruise destination, what type of activity is involved and whether it's a full- or half-day tour. Young children often pay a reduced rate for tours.

Looking at Princess Cruises ' shore excursions in Grand Cayman, a 2.5-hour stingray swim costs $70 per person, a 5-hour scenic island drive costs $100, and a 4-hour, two-tank scuba dive costs $180. In Juneau, Alaska, a 3-hour tour to the Mendenhall Glacier visitor center costs $50 per person. A 3-hour gold panning activity and salmon bake costs $125, while a 2.25-hour tour to take a helicopter ride to the top of the glacier, where you can walk around on the ice for half an hour, costs $420.

Some cruise lines, such as Viking and Regent Seven Seas Cruises , include the cost of basic shore excursions in their cruise fares. If you don't care to do any specialty tours, you might be able to get all your port activities for free. Other lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , offer discounted tours or shore excursion credit as booking promotions .

What's the best way to book shore excursions?

If you plan to book shore excursions through your cruise line, you have a couple of options of how to book them.

You can book your tours online in advance, or have your travel agent do it for you. This is the best route if there's a ship's tour you absolutely want to take and you don't want to risk its selling out. Book your tours the minute they open for reservations. When my parents traveled on a luxury Regent Seven Seas cruise, they said that waiting until the next morning to book tours meant that some of their choices were sold out.

The downside to booking tours in advance is that some cruise lines require that you pay for the tours in full, rather than putting them on your final cruise bill. It means you're out the money in advance and it can be difficult to use onboard credit to cover the cost of excursions booked online.

Related: Avoid these mistakes when booking cruise shore excursions

Alternatively, you can wait until you're on the ship and book your excursion in person at the shore excursions desk. You'll be able to ask the staff questions about the tours, and the charges will be added to your final cruise bill. However, you do run the risk that a popular tour might be sold out by the time you're ready to book.

The same is true with independent tours. Most people organize these ahead of time through a tour operator or travel agent. However, in popular cruise ports, there are often representatives waiting at the port or at a tourist office who can book you on same-day tours if space is available.

Is it cheaper to book shore excursions on the ship?

No. Most cruise lines either charge the same prices for shore excursions booked online and on board or offer a discount for tours purchased in advance. For example, Royal Caribbean often advertises up to 30% off select tours reserved ahead of the sailing.

Do I need to tip on shore excursions?

Whether you're on a cruise line sponsored or independent shore excursion, a best practice is to tip your tour guides at the end of the tour. Exceptions are if tips are included in the price or if you're visiting a country with a non-tipping culture, where offering cash would be awkward.

Related: Ultimate guide to tipping on cruise ships

Tipping is a personal matter, and there are no hard and fast rules. I canvassed TPG's cruise team and we agreed that we give roughly $5 to $10 per person for half-day tours and $10 to $20 per person for full-day excursions, adjusted for service and quality. Tip non-guide drivers roughly $2 per person in your party.

You'll likely want to tip more for customized, private tours — consider 5 to 20% of the cost of the tour.

How do I get the most from my cruise shore excursion?

shore excursions tui

The key to getting the most from your cruise shore excursion is to know what you want and make sure the tour description matches your expectations. I find that the more I cruise, the less I take ship-sponsored shore excursions because they don't offer exactly what I want.

For example, if you're considering a bus tour, make sure you understand how much time will be spent sitting on the bus and how much time will be at the destination or attraction, whether you will be looking at or going inside key attractions and whether there's free time to explore. If it's an activity, like snorkeling or a helicopter tour, read up on how much time is spent in transit and prep and how much time you will spend actually doing the activity.

Be sure to note the fitness level required and don't try to take on more than you're able to do. If you struggle with mobility, check to see if there's a lot of walking on uneven ground like cobblestones.

Related: 11 cruise ship excursions to avoid

If the tour takes place over lunchtime, check to see if a meal is included or if you have time to pick up something to eat.

Personally, I find that organized tours are best when the excursion is an activity I can't do on my own (such as kayaking, zip lining or a winery tour); when long distances are involved where I don't want to bother with public transportation or renting a car on a one-day visit; or when the culture is foreign enough that independent exploration would be tricky. Sometimes you also need an expert guide, such as in Pompeii, to know what you're seeing.

Bottom line

Shore excursions are a great way to make the most of your time in port, but you might get the most value out of a mix of guided tours and independent exploration. Choose the best option based on your budget and interests, and remember to look at both ship-sponsored and independent tour and activity options. And if you feel like staying on board one day while your ship is docked in a port that doesn't interest you, that's okay, too.

Marella Discovery Excursions - are they value for money?

Cool Cruiser

Came back from the Asia cruise that took in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam. I have to say that the cruise ship was very good but some of the Shore Excursions at the various ports appear very poor and not value for money.

We booked several trips before we left because we weren't sure of how far the docking was from the ship, if there would be any alternatives on shore for us to explore etc.

we found from talking to other more experienced Travellers on board that they went to the same places that we had been to, stayed longer at others and had paid a lot less ( in some cases up to £30-£60). I know people will say that on the organised trip you have a guide and that the trip will be safe, having been selected by Tui.

i thought so myself but our visit to Sihanoukville by Tuk Tuk still sends shivers down my spine. Not only was the excursion was a shambles

( Guide went to one Temple, the 10 Tuk Tuks went to another, after being taken to the wrong Tuk Tuks)

our Tuk Tuk was when we started ok but we were cramped , we sat facing each other, with our feet on the spare tyre as the driver drove whilst watching a Kung Fu movie on his phone, which was propped up behind the steering wheel. We thought at first he had the radio on but he was watching a film! On the way back the exhaust blew, we got off the Tuk to find ourselves covered in paint from gripping the sides so hard, we had to tell to follow the other Tuks because had no mirrors to see. If we moved we banged into him because the screen separating us from him was plastic.

the point was the excursion was unsafe, the Tuks were not roadworthy and the Guide admitted that the company was not the usual one they used.

if we had gone on our own we could have found a sound Tuk, agreed a price and gone round all the places for half the price.

When we asked for our money back from Tui, they offered 30% as a goodwill gesture which we turned down. Having got back home we complained to Head Office at Tui who said " that's what aTuk Tuk is like in Cambodia! Not true, we saw some very safe and fancy looking Tuks.

from this we concluded that we would do our Excursions independently or with others to lessen the cost and went to many of the same destinations as the organised tour and stayed longer at the places we liked and didn't visit Temple after Temple.

all our forays were good, cheaper, and we felt safe. The drivers all had a sheet with pictures of the places that you wanted to visit and you just pointed to them and off you went.

what are other travellers experience of the Organised Excursions that Ships offer? Do you think they are worth the money?

There are lots of options, you just have to work out which is the best for you. Marella excursions are probably not the best, but in some cases they are the only option and they, at least,  get you back to the ship on time. Private excursions, if possible, are great and tend to be smaller groups. Lots of ports are DIY possible. We have done both options and luckily we have been very lucky with our choices.

Cristaltips

I agree about the Marella trips not being value for money. I feel that we were very much used as guinea pigs for their first Asia cruises.

We also did a Tuk Tuk  trip in Cambodia. It was sold as 4.5 hours. We left ship at 9.00 to transport to Tuk Tuk then sat on it for at least 15 mins while they got everyone together. The traffic was awful and I did fear for my life over the state of the vehicle. However, we lived to tell the tale and were back on the ship by 12.30. Doesn’t need a mathematician to work out that wasn’t 4.5 hours!

The Penang trip. We visited a temple (of course!) and a batik factory which was very good. The rest of the trip ( in a coach with no apparent rear suspension) went downhill. A visit to see a fruit and spice stall on the side of a busy road, and the finale was to see , in the distance, a bridge linking Penang to the mainland!

Bangkok. We drove for 2 hours ( had a comfort stop at motorway services) into Bangkok. Drove round passing Chinatown and Flower Market and stopped for a temple visit for about 30 mins. Then drove back, another 2 hours, another comfort stop.

As it was our first trip to this part of the world, we were wary about doing things on our own and getting back on time. However, we feel we missed seeing a lot on the trips we did. Marella really need to review their trips in my opinion.

Just back from Red Sea Odyssey and thought the excursions were overpriced and very rushed, also poorly described in terms of ability, accessibility, and duration.  Destination Services were terrible, giving out wrong information beforehand and very confrontational and rude when we complained afterwards.  Don't get me wrong, we we're thrilled to be able to visit these places, and having never been in that area before we're glad to have the "safety" of being on a ships excursion, but if you are more confident and can arrange an alternative I'd do it!

Jayneykul

We did a ships tour in Civitavecchia As we had done several previous trips in to Rome. We thought it was very good value and definitely much cheaper than the American lines.

Done a few excursions via Tui from cruise ships.  Found some great, some quite poor.  You will probably get cheaper and better value through other companies.    The reason I go through Tui is for the protection.  If something goes wrong whilst on their excursion eg. bus breaks down or something, the ship will wait till your back on board.  I wouldn't be too confident if you went through ACME Tours, bus broke down and there was no way you would reembark the ship before it was due to leave port.

I am reading this because I am considering a Marella cruise and want to hear what people say about the whole experience.  However I am never keen on ship tours.  They are usually overpriced.  They have to be.  If a tour operates usually prices a tour.  The ship negotiates a price,  There has to be a commission.

I understand nerves though when going on a first trip to Asia.  Once you have done your first trip you will know what it is like and be braver about independent tours ..  and Tuk Tuks!!

MAke sure that you leave the ship early and allow an hour or so extra to get back.  I think that one important consideration is how easily you will get to your next destination if you should miss the ship (and I am sure it rarely happens).

If your next port is reached after 4 days at sea, you need to be very careful.  If your next port is 200 km up the coast, you can be braver.

Planning Shore Excursions in 2024: Your 10-Step Guide

Cruising is a fantastic way to explore multiple destinations in one journey, and with 2024 on the horizon, it's the perfect time to start planning the ultimate shore excursions for your upcoming cruise. Whether you're a seasoned cruiser or a first-timer, this blog post will guide you through the steps to ensure your shore excursions in 2024 are unforgettable.

  • Research Your Cruise Itinerary: The first step in planning a perfect shore excursion for 2024 is to understand your cruise itinerary. Familiarize yourself with the ports of call, their attractions, and the duration of your stay. This knowledge will help you make informed decisions when selecting your excursions.
  • Choose Your Shore Excursions: Consider your interests and preferences when choosing shore excursions. Do you want to explore historical sites, relax on a beach, go on an adventure, or immerse yourself in local culture? Cruise lines often offer a variety of excursions, from guided tours to self-guided adventures. Research your options and make a list of the experiences that appeal to you.
  • Book in Advance: Popular shore excursions can sell out quickly, so it's advisable to book your chosen activities well in advance. Most cruise lines offer online booking options before your cruise, ensuring you secure your spots for the excursions you desire.
  • Consider Independent Options: While cruise line excursions can be convenient, don't overlook the possibility of arranging independent shore excursions. This can give you more flexibility and, in some cases, save you money. Just make sure you plan your timing carefully to ensure you return to the ship on time.
  • Budget Wisely: Each shore excursion comes with a cost, so it's essential to budget for them accordingly. Factor in not only the excursion fees but also any extra expenses like tips and souvenirs. Having a clear budget will help you make choices that align with your financial plans.
  • Pack for the Day: Pack a small day bag with essentials such as sunscreen, water, a hat, comfortable footwear, and any necessary medications. Don't forget your cruise key card, photo ID, and a copy of your cruise itinerary for reference.
  • Be Punctual: Cruise ships have strict departure and arrival times for excursions. Ensure you are back on time to avoid missing the ship's departure. It's a good idea to set alarms or reminders, and always allow extra time for potential delays.
  • Respect Local Culture: Remember that you're a guest in the destinations you visit. Show respect for local customs, traditions, and the environment. Learn a few basic phrases in the local language and interact with the local community in a positive way.
  • Stay Safe: Prioritize your safety during shore excursions. Follow your guide's instructions, be cautious in unfamiliar environments, and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Consider travel insurance to cover unforeseen incidents.
  • Capture Memories: Don't forget to document your adventures with photos and journaling. The memories you create during your shore excursions in 2024 will be cherished for years to come.

With careful planning and consideration, you can make your shore excursions in 2024 a highlight of your cruise experience. Research your destinations, choose your excursions wisely, and embrace each new experience with enthusiasm. Whether you're exploring historical sites, indulging in local cuisine, or embarking on thrilling adventures, these excursions will undoubtedly create memories that last a lifetime. Enjoy your cruise and your incredible shore excursions in 2024!

Tunisian Sahara Two-day Tour from Sousse

Port El Kantaoui-Sousse - Tunisian Sahara Two-day Tour from Sousse

The desert sands of Tunisia are sprinkled with Hollywood stardust. This two-day tour takes you to some of the country's top filming locations. You'll visit ancient Roman ruins and underground houses, cross a vast salt lake and spend the night in an oasis on the fringes of the Sahara. Hamdi, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Luke Skywalker's home is in Matmata, a cave village where the houses are hollowed out of the rock. The sandstone is soft enough to dig deep pits, and then dig out caves around the edge, to form the underground rooms. Each room opens onto the base of the pit, which becomes a central courtyard.'Begin your desert adventure at El Jem Colosseum. This ancient Roman stadium used to seat 35,000 spectators, entertained by gladiatorial fights and chariot races. After your cultural fix, head to Matmata, for lunch and a visit to the rock-cut cave homes that starred in the Star Wars films. Finish the day in your very own oasis for an overnight stay in Douz, the ‘Gateway to the Sahara'.In the morning, you'll cross Chott el Djerid, a rust-washed salt lake, before hopping into a 4x4 for a ride to Onk Jemal. Here, you'll explore a film set city built exclusively for Star Wars. After stopping for a Tunisian lunch at Gafsa, you'll round off the tour with a photo stop at historic Kairouan. You won't be able to resist taking lots of pics of the richly decorative mosques that give the town an abundance of character.

This desert is not a dead entity, it's even cultivated in places by those who inhabit it. The sands come alive according to the seasons.'Embark on your sandy adventure at El Jem Colosseum.
