Runner-Up: AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA  offers consumers a great option for no-stress travel insurance: low-priced plans, generous coverage limits on key categories including primary insurance on lost luggage, and up to 150% reimbursement for qualifying trip cancellations.

Best Low-Cost Travel Insurance Option: Trawick International Travel Insurance

Trawick International Travel Insurance  is another medically robust insurance provider that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. This company offers one of the most generous medical evacuation policies in the market, although travelers will need to remember to add on rental car coverage if they need it.

Best Travel Insurance for Road Trips: Travelex Travel Insurance

Travelex Travel Insurance  offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex American plan is meant for trips limited to the US, but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the US for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about the financial aspect of receiving medical care while traveling , even in the most remote corners of the globe.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away.

Choosing Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

Yes, travel insurance typically offers some coverage of canceled flights, but if this benefit is important to you, make sure you read the fine print of your policy to make sure it offers adequate reimbursement. If you think you may need to cancel your travel plans, you should consider purchasing cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance .

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with preexisting conditions, so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose The Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award 5 stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2022 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the US Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

eSure Travel Insurance Review

Marvin's low-down on Travel Insurance from eSure

Marvin

The experts say:

eSure's Extra Travel Insurance is a comprehensive policy that offers a robust level of protection for your holiday. It scored 63% with Which?, putting it in the top 54 out of 71 providers, and Fairer Finance awarded it 5 stars. Covid cover is rated as Low, but this policy does offer £15 million of medical expenses cover and also includes airline failure cover as standard. There's £2,000 baggage cover, £5,000 cancellation cover, and an excess of just £70 on medical claims. All in all, it looks like eSure's Extra Travel Insurance could be a great option if you're looking for reliable protection on your next trip away.

What eSure customers are saying right now:

  • 💰 Very competitive prices
  • 🤝 Offers identical cover to other companies
  • 📞 Phone lines open till 8pm
  • 📩 Auto-response to emails
  • 🤗 Rewards return customers
  • 🚨 Terrible customer service, with long waits on the phone, unanswered emails, and letters going unanswered.
  • 😡 Uncompetitive insurance premiums and often no reward for loyalty.
  • 🤦‍♀️ Unhelpful resolution to claims, taking a long time to process in some cases.

eSure customer reviews summary

eSure has been the bane of many motorists' lives, with long wait times on the phone, unhelpful customer service, and a lack of clarity when it comes to taking your car abroad. With rising premiums and a lack of rewards for loyalty, it's no wonder that many are turning to other companies for their car insurance needs. It's time for eSure to step up their game if they want to keep customers happy - overall, we give them a 4/10.

Excellent Professional experience and service 👏 very pleased...

They have cancelled my insurance policy…

They have cancelled my insurance policy despite paying. Had a late payment and advised them I could pay at the end of the month. Payment goes out of my account and then I wake up to an email saying they've cancelled my insurance. Spent over an hour on a live chat going in circles with an agent saying they received it but it was processing so they cancelled it and can't undo it and refused to take any responsibility. I was then on hold on the phone over an hour to just have the call terminate and now I'm out hundreds of pounds despite fulfilling the terms of my agreement. Avoid at all costs.

Need to change an existing policy- awful customer service

Need to change an existing policy, followed the instructions on web site. Get told I need to chat (message) with someone, wait 20 minutes to be connected. Get connected and asked to wait “with you momentarily”. Then disconnected because I did not respond (was no need in my view, was being asked to wait whilst the brought up my details or similar). Lesson learnt, I repeated the process, so now after 40mins I am finally ably to ask for the change (car parked overnight on drive not road). Was told thats not a change they can make. Waste of everyones (but particularly my) time. No option to phone, have to use the awful chat system.

Shocking customer service 45 minute wait to get hung up on when trying to put my private plate on then tried to raise my excess by £500 because I put the plate on then after a 20 min conversation reversed the decision stating an it error seemed to be an excuse Said would receive confirmation of change nothing arrived another phone call 45 minute wait and got hung up on and told I’ll have to wait 3 days later still haven’t received anything still haven’t updated the askmid website and only the app shows my correct reg spoke to web chat after 30 minute wait and informed me it has been changed but no reply when asked about receiving documents to my email have a complaint logged about it haven’t heard a thing

Date of experience : 23 February 2024

Easy transaction

I’m so happy you are friendly, strangely bad.

After many years of esure providing my buildings and contents insurance, I was informed by email that they wouldn’t be renewing my policy. My circumstances haven’t changed and no reason was given except that it was “due to an upgrade of our internal system”. I used the online chat system to ask for more information but was similarly told it was due to the ‘upgrade’. When I asked why that meant I wasn’t being offered a new policy, the guy had nothing coherent to say. His assurance that I would get an email to help me get into my online account resulted in nothing - no email. After this perplexing experience and dismissive customer service, I can only say that I’m really happy to be with a different insurer now.

Utterly awful !

Utterly awful ! My renewal was £511 pounds went through comparison site they then quote me £361. I wait 22 mins on the phone to query this only to be laughed at by the call handler. Disgusted. Used to think they were decent not anymore.

Esure Insurance

Esure Insurance is a relative newcomer to the UK insurance scene. It was founded in 2000 by chairman Sir Peter Wood, who has had a great deal of experience and success launching insurance brands in the UK. Esure is famous for its adverts and the notorious catchphrase, “calm down dear”! Esure offers car insurance, home insurance and travel insurance, which we will focus on in this guide. Let’s see what they’re all about!

History of Esure Insurance

Esure Insurance commenced in 2000 under the leadership of Sir Peter Wood. He is seen as a pioneer in direct selling and also launched the hugely successful brand, Direct Line (not part of Esure Group plc), many years earlier. In Esure’s early days, it expanded quickly and won many industry awards for its products and services. By its fifth birthday, the company had one million customers! Let’s have a look at the key dates that led Esure Insurance to where it is today.

  • 2000 - Esure Insurance is founded and focuses on selling insurance online.
  • 2005 - Esure Group plc. acquires Sheilas’ Wheels, which also becomes one of the fastest-selling insurance brands in the UK.
  • 2011 - Esure moves into the broker market for car insurance. This is to cater for a more niche market: drivers with high-performance cars or few points on their licence.
  • 2013 - In March, the company is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
  • 2015 - GoCompare becomes part of the group, but operates separately.
  • 2017 - Becomes a member of the Blue Light Card Scheme. The scheme is comprised of retailers and service providers that offer discounts to employees in the emergency services and armed forces.
  • 2018 - In December, the group is acquired by private equity firm Bain Capital.

Esure today

Today, Esure Group provides insurance for approximately 2.5 million customers in the UK. Esure Group’s reported revenue in 2017 was £781.3 million. The company’s focus is on lower-risk customers and offers cheaper premiums for customers with no claims bonuses. Esure has offices in Reigate, Manchester and Glasgow.

hands clapping

The acquisition of Esure in 2018 by Boston-based company Bain Capital was seen as a highly positive move. Sir Peter Wood remained the chairman of the company as part of the deal. He said the backing of Bain Capital will enable Esure Insurance to invest further and grow market share.

Charity and community initiatives

These days, corporate social responsibility is a big drawcard for employees when choosing a company to work for. Equally, many customers look at a company’s philanthropic reputation and related activities. Charity and community initiatives play a large role in the Esure company ethos.

“At Esure we strongly believe in giving back to our local communities and lending a helping hand to local organisations where we can.” - Esure

Here is a summary of the projects and charities that Esure Insurance are involved in:

  • Loveworks - A charity based in Reigate (Esure’s head office). It supports the local community in many important ways. Some of the key activities include: providing food for hungry families, helping the elderly and supporting vulnerable young women.
  • Safe Drive Stay Alive - Esure is one of the founding members of this organisation that educates teenagers about road safety throughout Thames Valley and Hampshire.
  • Sheilas’ Fund - Esure Insurance gives customers the opportunity to nominate a charity for a donation when they purchase a policy. Customers have to complete a purchase via the quote app on Facebook to request the donation. They can then nominate Macmillan Cancer Support, Water Aid or The NSPCC to receive £20 from the Sheila Fund.
  • Employee fundraising - Events are held throughout the year to raise funds for charities. Some of the events held include dress-down days, bake-offs, raffles, book sales, and sports competitions.
  • Environmental - In a push to be more environmentally friendly, Esure refrains from using paper-based methods of communication and recycles what it can.

Esure Insurance policies: car, home & travel

In this section, we are going to delve into the different Esure Insurance policies for car insurance , home insurance and travel insurance in more detail.

Home insurance

More than 300,000 people have home insurance through Esure Insurance. The two types of policies that Esure offers are building and contents insurance.

  • Building insurance - covers the structural aspects of your home (e.g. walls, ceiling, bathroom, windows). It will protect you if your home is significantly damaged by an event such as water leaks or fire. These bills can be astronomical so you would always want this cover as a homeowner.
  • Contents insurance - this will protect your items that aren’t fixed (generally), such as furniture, entertainment equipment, clothes etc. You may need to list expensive items (like jewellery) and make sure your payout limits are adequate. You do not need to be a homeowner to take out this insurance and tenants usually need this too. Esure offers new for old contents cover so it’s important to include the cost of items when they are purchased new, rather than the current value.

If you buy combined building and contents insurance from Esure Insurance, you will also receive the following benefits free for the first 12 months:

  • Family legal protection - up to £50,000 in legal costs covered.
  • Home emergency cover - Esure will arrange for emergency repairs up to the value of £500.

Read our Esure home insurance guide to find out more (coming soon)!

Car insurance

We can categorise Esure’s car insurance policies into three main groups:

  Car Insurance

As the name suggests, Esure’s third party, fire and theft covers you for damage you accidentally cause another driver’s car or property, as well as payment for any injuries the other driver sustained. It will also cover you if your car is stolen or damaged by fire or theft.

The fully comprehensive policy will protect you against everything that the third party, fire and theft policy will, plus more. One additional benefit is you are insured if you drive another car (certain exemptions apply). It will also protect you against accidental damage to your car.

image of a damaged car

There are also optional extras you can add onto your car insurance:

  • Motor legal protection
  • Breakdown cover
  • Car hire benefit
  • Personal injury cover
  • Misfuelling insurance

Read our detailed Esure car insurance guide for more information (coming soon).

  Multicar Insurance

You can get a discount with Esure’s car insurance if you insure two or more cars. It can be for anyone who lives with you who is over 25. Your policies will be kept separate, which means renewal dates can be different and a claim on one policy won’t affect the other’s no claim discount.

  Electric Car Insurance

The rise of the electric car is a sign of the times and popularity is only expected to increase each year. If you are the proud owner of an electric car you will need specific car insurance. Esure’s Electric car insurance will offer you a range of unique benefits in addition to the standard car cover. Here is a sample of what it will cover:

  • Battery cover - whether your battery is owned or leased, and wherever it is located in your vehicle, you will be covered for accidental damage to the battery.
  • Power cable cover - protected whilst you are charging your vehicle.
  • Out of charge (add on) - if you run out of charge, Esure has partnered with RAC who will take you to the closest charge point.

Travel insurance

Esure travel insurance will cover anyone who is 79 or under. There are two main types of policies you can choose from:

  • Single trip - this will cover you for one trip (can be to multiple countries). The maximum trip length allowed is 180 days, reduced to 90 days if you are aged between 66 and 75, and 62 days if aged 76 to 79.
  • Annual multi-trip - this will allow you to take as many trips as you like throughout a one year period. The maximum trip length is 31 days (Essential cover), 45 days (Classic cover), 62 days (Extra cover). You also get winter sports cover for up to 17 days total in the policy period.

Esure offers a range of optional extras you can add to your policy, including gadget, golf, winter sports, wedding, cruise, vehicle hire excess waiver and business cover. Read our Esure travel insurance guide for more information (coming soon).

New customers can get up to 20% discount for purchasing travel insurance through the Esure website!

Esure Insurance reviews: a quick look

What do current and previous customers think of Esure Insurance? We searched customer review sites and they were generally positive. The main praise for the company was its excellent online service and customer service for queries (prior to claims).

On reviews.io, Esure has 1,066 customer reviews and receives 3.76/5 stars. Of these customers, 70% would recommend Esure.

“Very helpful staff...excellent customer service...great company, would recommend.” - Natasha, reviews.io

On Trustpilot, Esure has 7,638 reviews. It receives 4/5 stars, a great score, attributed mostly to its good customer service, easy sign-up process and good value for money.

“First time with Esure. Very good insurance quote, pleased with pre-sales service, gives me confidence that they will have equally good after-sales service.” - Margaret, Trustpilot

Some customers on Trustpilot were not as happy with the process though. Obviously, busy periods of the day and any major issues impacting customers can change someone’s experience drastically!

Complaints handling

Company’s complaints data can give you an excellent indication of how it treats customers and how efficient it is. The following data for Esure is for the period 1st January 2019 to 30th June 2019.

Esure received 4.85 complaints for every 1,000 policies in force, which puts Esure right in the middle when compared against other providers. While Esure aims to resolve complaints within three days it does not often reach this target (36.1% success rate in this period). However, it did manage to close 61.1% of complaints within eight weeks.

The main reason customers complained to Esure Insurance was disputes over sums/charges .

Selectra’s verdict

Considering that Esure Insurance has not been around that long, it has proven to be successful quickly.

It offers many benefits for new customers, but there are reports of renewal prices rising by around 25% (even with no claims bonuses). Esure Insurance does say that if you find a cheaper quote they will match it.

Pre-sales care by agents is good and customers like their friendly and helpful attitude. As with so many insurance providers, they seem to fall down when it comes to resolving claims.

It’s a young, dynamic company, and offers modern insurance solutions such as electric car insurance and gadgets insurance (for travelling). It also has a great website and online account offering.

Data and information correct as of October 2019.

“no compassion, anything to not pay out”.

written by RachieLouie on 13/07/2017

Absolute jokers! Completely lacking empathy and any compassion! AVOID USING THIS COMPANY FOR TRAVEL INSURANCE AT ALL COSTS!! My poor dad booked a holiday in February for this week whilst experiencing what he was told was IBS by his doctor, not debilitating and so he booked a holiday thinking it could be stress related. In may my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, we found out in June it was stage 4. Of course one of the most aggressive forms of cancer he cancelled his holidays as he is now receiving chemo and cannot go away. The company will now not pay out his money because apparently he was ill in February when he booked the holiday!!!! WE DID NOT KNOW IT WAS CANCER UNTIL MAY YOU FOOLS!!! Absolutely fuming! Way to kick a man when he is down! Heartless and evil! He needs that money for his treatment now instead of his relaxing holiday! He is going through hell and you've made it 100 x worse!

Esure have now reviewed their assessment of the claim and have admitted they made a wrong assumption of dad's case, they have now accepted his insurance claim! Thank goodness there's still some kind people in the world

“Esure do not pay out”

written by on 13/07/2011

They are atrocious! We were robbed while we slept in our apartmemnt on holiday with our 3 babies. Esure suggested 3 times that we use our house insurance to claim. they dragged our claim out for 9 weeks phoning us and emailing us for more information, receipts etc and then wrote to us saying that since our camera was not in the safe they could not reimburse. Our camera did not fit in the safe and we were in the apartment when it happened! They have used every excuse possible in order not to pay and on further examination online I see this is the case for many others - avoid at all costs!

Don't bother insuring with Esure if you want to be covered. If they won't pay for a £100.00 camera then what chance have you got if you fall ill? Worth a thought!

So angry! I have cone across the same. Our camera and money was stolen from our apartment, when we were in the apartment and they will not pay out! Waste of time- do not insure with them

“I have my car insurance with Esure and they regularly...”

written by Sekhemet on 05/08/2005

I have my car insurance with Esure and they regularly send me post informing me of new offers and deals. About a month before I went on holiday I received a letter telling me about travel insurance from Esure - having not arranged my own yet I decided to give them a go - the premium was cheap and the level of cover they provided was excellent. They are always pleasant to speak to over the phone and any claims I have made on my car insurance in the past have always been dealt with in a fast and timely manner. I have no qualms in recommending them to you.

Esurance Auto Insurance

Pros & Cons

High customer satisfaction ratings for auto insurance shopping.

User-friendly website and digital tools.

Lots of discounts and coverage options.

Low customer satisfaction ratings for auto insurance claims.

More car and home insurance complaints than expected for a company its size.

Esurance is known for its user-friendly website, interactive tools and cutting-edge mobile apps. It’s best for people who like to manage their own policies, have straightforward insurance needs and prefer to get quotes online. Esurance offers auto insurance in 43 states and homeowners coverage in 31 of those states.

In our auto insurance reviews, our editorial team considers both the customer and the insurer. These are some of the factors we take into account:

Financial strength. We use A.M. Best ratings to confirm an insurer’s long-term financial stability and ability to pay claims. NerdWallet does not recommend companies with a rating lower than a B.

Complaints. These ratings are based on complaints to state regulators relative to a company’s size, according to three years’ worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The best auto insurance companies have fewer than the expected number of complaints.

Ease of use. This category looks at how easily consumers can interact with an insurer through its mobile app and website. This includes how much coverage information is offered online, whether a user can start and track a claim online and get a quote and mobile app scores based on the Apple and Google Play store ratings.

Discounts. We look at both the kind of discounts a company offers and the total number of discounts available.

Esurance auto insurance coverage

When you're shopping for car insurance coverage, it's important to understand what car insurance coverage you want and what you’re required to buy. For instance, most states require a minimum amount of car insurance to drive a vehicle. Alternatively, if you want extra protection, you may be interested in full coverage insurance. Read about the most common types of car insurance coverage to see how they work.

Esurance offers all the usual coverage options, plus optional coverage including:

Emergency roadside assistance. If you have this coverage, Esurance will pay up to $75 for towing, tire changes, lockouts and other services when you’re stranded. You can add it to auto policies that have comprehensive and collision coverage. To summon help you can use your Esurance mobile app, but be aware that using this coverage counts as an insurance claim.

CarMatch rental coverage. This option pays for the full cost of a rental comparable to your car if it’s stolen or while it’s being repaired after an accident, for up to 45 days or $3,000. This option isn’t available in all states, and you must have comprehensive and collision coverage to qualify.

Gap coverage. If you financed or leased a vehicle and it’s totaled, insurers typically pay out what the car is worth at the time of the accident, but you may still owe more than that. With gap insurance, Esurance will pay up to 25% of your car’s value to help you cover the difference.

Auto insurance buying guide

Before you compare car insurance companies, you’ll need to collect some basic information. This includes the driving history of everyone who will be on the policy, as well as facts about your car, such as safety features and annual mileage driven. You’ll also want to determine which types of coverage you need. For example, do you want only the bare minimum insurance that your state requires, or do you need more extensive coverage, such as gap insurance or rideshare coverage? Check that each company you’re considering has the options you want.

When comparing rates among insurers, make sure each is offering the same coverage limits and deductibles. You may not want to make your decision based on price alone. Look at how many consumer complaints each company has, as a high number of complaints could be a red flag about the quality of service you'll receive.

Depending on which company you choose, you may be able to buy insurance online, over the phone or through an agent. For more guidance, see how to get car insurance .

Esurance homeowners insurance

Esurance offers homeowners insurance policies in 31 states; if you don’t live in one of those, Esurance will help you get home insurance through a partner company.

Esurance’s standard policies include two features that many insurers don’t offer:

Water backup coverage . This pays when a drain overflows or a sump pump backs up and causes damage. Coverage varies by state, ranging from $5,000 to $25,000.

Fire department charges . If you call the fire department and later are charged for its services, Esurance helps pay the fee.

Esurance’s optional home insurance features include:

Building codes coverage . This comes in handy if your home is damaged and you file a claim but a new law requires more expensive repairs than your policy covers. This coverage helps pay the difference, ranging from 5% to 20% of your dwelling coverage limit.

Increased building structure coverage. This option gives you extra protection for extreme damage. Your policy will pay up to an additional 40% of your dwelling coverage limit to rebuild your home after it's destroyed.

Identity theft coverage . This pays up to $10,000 to repair your name and credit after identity theft. Esurance also provides help from an ID theft advisor, monthly credit monitoring and access to an annual credit report and score. The coverage costs $3 per month for one person, and $4 for a couple.

Fair rental income . If a rental space in your home is left uninhabitable after a claim, Esurance reimburses you for lost revenue.

Home daycare . If you run an in-home day care, this covers you in case an accident happens and you’re liable, up to your policy’s liability limit.

Extended premises . If you run a two-, three- or four-unit building, this optional coverage extends your dwelling limit to the units and covers you if a tenant is injured.

Claims forgiveness . Your first claim won’t raise your premium or make you lose your claim-free discount.

Adding storm shutters to exterior windows, in certain states.

Having a hail-resistant roof.

Not smoking.

Complaints and customer satisfaction

Coverage Counselor , which can help you determine what kind of coverage you need.

Fuelcaster , which predicts gas prices so you can time fill-ups when prices are cheaper.

E-star , which locates Esurance’s recommended repair facilities. If you choose an E-star shop to fix your vehicle after an accident, Esurance will guarantee repairs for as long as you own the car.

Methodology

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2018-2020. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Auto insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s auto insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Home insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s homeowners insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Bottom line: Main highlights of Travel Insured International travel insurance

One of Travel Insured International’s main benefits is its flexibility.

The provider offers a wide range of plans for travelers to choose from. Some plans even offer free coverage for children , making this a great option for families.

Travel Insured International plans offer primary coverage with high medical and medical evacuation limits , thus casting a wide net of protection should an incident occur and giving you greater peace of mind in light of unexpected events.

Travel Insured International offers three single-trip insurance policies through our comparison tool .

These plans vary in specific coverage, though they all offer compensation for trip cancellation, delays, medical evacuations and lost baggage.

Travel Insured International

Here’s a quick overview of each plan and its range of coverage:

Worldwide Trip Protector:

This plan comes with numerous benefits, including 100% trip cancellation, 150% trip interruption, $100,000 for medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation coverage and missed connection protection. It’s a good plan for well-rounded coverage that includes many common travel mishaps.

Worldwide Trip Protector Plus:

This policy also offers 100% trip cancellation coverage , 150% trip interruption and $100,000 for medical expenses. Other benefits are cancel for any reason and interrupt for any reason coverage (CFAR and IFAR, respectively), meaning you can be reimbursed if your trip is cut short or called off. Also included is rental car damage protection, which can be added to the other two plans for an additional fee. Though more expensive, this option is good for those who want an extra layer of protection.

Worldwide Trip Protector Edge:

Included in this plan is 100% trip cancellation, 100% trip interruption, $10,000 for medical expenses, $100,000 for medical evacuation and $750 for baggage protection. Some benefits, like those for medical expenses and evacuation, can be increased with an optional upgrade. Though it has fewer benefits than the previous two plans, this budget-friendly policy is customizable for those who want more control over their coverage.

Here is a brief look at how each plan differs:

Travel Insured International also offers one annual multi-trip travel insurance policy , the Annual Multi-Trip Protector. This policy includes coverage for medical expenses and evacuation as well as typical post-departure benefits like trip interruption and loss of personal belongings. Unlike single-trip coverage, this policy has an extended term and protects any trip you take during that window.

Optional add-ons

For greater protection during your trip, Travel Insured International offers several add-on benefits . These aren’t typically included in standard insurance policies but will extend coverage even further for an additional fee. Here are four upgrades you can add to your plan:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Even with extensive planning, sometimes a trip must be unexpectedly canceled. To protect against surprise cancellations, consider adding cancel for any reason coverage  to your travel insurance plan. With this benefit, you’re eligible for reimbursement of nonrefundable trip costs that aren’t otherwise covered by your policy.

Rental car damage coverage

This optional add-on keeps you protected in the event your rental car is damaged or stolen. Covered damage includes collisions, vandalism, natural disasters and any other situation beyond your control that occurs while the car is in your possession. If you plan to rent a car during your trip, this add-on might be a worthy addition to your insurance policy. At Travel Insured International, the maximum benefit amount for rental car coverage ranges from $25,000 to $50,000.

Event ticket registration fee protection

If a ticketed event is part of your trip itinerary, you might consider adding registration fee protection to your travel insurance plan. This optional coverage can be tacked on to any Worldwide Trip Protector policy and will reimburse you for the cost of unused event tickets or registration fees. To be eligible, your tickets must be listed as nonrefundable by their distributor, and your reason for not attending the event must be on the list of covered unforeseen circumstances. If this is the case, you may receive up to $1,000 worth of reimbursements.

Cancel for work reasons

Unexpected work obligations can put a hold on your travel plans, potentially leaving you at a financial loss. If you think work might pull you away from your trip, extra coverage for work-related cancellations may be a useful addition to your plan. With this add-on, the full cost of your trip can be reimbursed, assuming your situation falls under the list of covered scenarios, which includes being required to work on the trip. For this coverage, the maximum benefit amount is 75% of the total trip cost.

Like any travel insurance policy, some benefits aren’t included in Travel Insured International’s plans.

Depending on the policy you choose, things that aren’t covered include:

  • Loss of audio or visual aids, like eyeglasses, contacts or hearing aids
  • Injuries caused by self-harm
  • Losses incurred while you were under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Injuries caused by participation in extreme activities (think skydiving)
  • Routine check-ups or dental exams
  • Mental health emergencies, unless they require hospitalization

According to our sales data, visitors who purchased a Travel Insured International plan through our website spend an average of $102 for travel insurance for a two-week trip. This equates to an average cost of $8.58 per day for travel insurance .

To give you a better idea of how much plans from Travel Insured International cost, we got multiple quotes for each plan to five different countries and found the average cost for each.

Average Cost of Travel Insured International Plans

While these serve as an estimate, keep in mind that these numbers are for example purposes only, and your own costs will vary based on the specific parameters of your trip. We recommend getting a quote for updated pricing.

Methodology for reaching these averages:

We applied the following parameters to each quote:

  • Total trip cost : $2,000
  • Trip duration : Seven days
  • Time of trip : September 2024

Taking a trip insured by Travel Insurance International gives customers a unique perspective of the company’s effectiveness. If you’re considering a plan from this provider, customer reviews can help you make a more informed decision.

On Squaremouth , Travel Insured International has more than 3,300 reviews with an overall rating of 4.39 out of five .

Here’s what customers like and dislike about Travel Insured International.

What customers like

Customers have plenty of good things to say about Travel Insured International. Some commonly mentioned positives are:

  • Flexibility
  • Comprehensive policies
  • Knowledgeable staff

“Very knowledgeable staff when you call. Have used before and will use again. Very flexible options from medical only to full trip cancelation coverage.” -  Howard

“The settlement was exactly as we had expected based on our documentation and receipts.” -  Kathleen

What customers don’t like

Some customers had less-than-stellar experiences. Some frequently mentioned areas for improvement include:

  • Hard-to-reach customer service
  • Tedious claims process
  • Miscommunication

“Horrible customer service. Took days for a reply to email. Never was able to get it resolved before I left.” -  Kathryn

“Our trip was interrupted due to COVID. I expected some help from their “concierge” line, but after waiting 50 minutes on hold I received nothing except “file a claim once you’re home.” Literally zero help arranging alternate transportation or hotel.” -  Joseph

Overall, Travel Insured International is undoubtedly a high-quality travel insurance provider.

With a thorough range of benefits and an extensive list of optional add-ons, it’s clear why the company is a top-rated insurance provider among travelers. Its three policies each cover a standard selection of vacation mishaps, including trip cancellation and interruption, medical expenses and lost baggage.

If you’re looking for an excellent range of coverage with customizable add-ons and family-friendly prices, Travel Insured International may be the right provider for your next trip . If you’re looking for higher maximum limits and easier claims processes, however, you might be better off looking elsewhere for your travel insurance.

What is covered under Travel Insured International insurance?

The policies offered by Travel Insured International vary in coverage. Depending on your chosen plan, you can expect insurance benefits designed to protect your health, finances and personal belongings.

Covered items include:

  • Trip cancellation and interruption
  • Missed connections
  • Rewards points reimbursement
  • Nonmedical evacuation
  • Accident and sickness expenses
  • Lost or stolen baggage
  • Baggage delay

Does Travel Insured International travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Yes, COVID-19 is included in Travel Insured International’s coverage . This insurance provider treats COVID-19 as it would any other sickness, meaning you’re covered for a range of losses that it might lead to. This includes things like trip interruption or cancellation, medical evacuation and medical expenses. For some plans, medical insurance terms require the COVID-19 diagnosis to be confirmed by a physician rather than relying on the results of an at-home test.

The same guidelines that dictate whether an illness counts as a pre-existing condition apply to cases of COVID-19. If your chosen plan includes a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver , any losses that occur are likely to be covered.

Does Travel Insured International offer ‘cancel for any reason’ coverage?

Cancel for any reason coverage, or CFAR, is available as an optional add-on to most plans at Travel Insured International. Under this coverage, you’re eligible for reimbursement of any unused, nonrefundable payments or deposits you made when planning your trip. If your trip is canceled for reasons not otherwise covered in the plan, you can recover a portion of the trip cost up to the set maximum benefit amount.

CFAR applies only when it’s added to your plan during a specified time period and the trip is canceled no later than 48 hours before your scheduled departure. It’s important to note that this doesn’t cover travel arrangements paid for but not provided by a third-party travel agency.

Does Travel Insured International have international travel insurance?

Yes, Travel Insured International offers travel insurance for international trips. This means your coverage will remain in effect when you’re outside your home country, so any sickness or accidents you incur abroad are likely eligible for coverage. Some benefits, like emergency medical evacuation, are included specifically for international travelers.

Esure home insurance review – products and services compared with other leading insurers

Established in 2000, Esure has grown rapidly and now provides more than 2.3 million customers with a range of products, including car and home insurance . Its insurance protection for homes offers separate buildings and contents insurance , a combined policy and a broad range of optional add-ons to create tailored cover.

Esure’s founder, Sir Peter Wood, had successfully launched Direct Line 15 years earlier, specialising in providing insurance policies over the phone. With Esure he said wanted to streamline things further. Featuring straightforward, comprehensible policies, Esure delivers a wide range of online services, as does its sister company Sheilas’ Wheels. In 2021, both providers entered a new partnership with Legal & General.

Esure home insurance provides one level of cover, which offers buildings, contents and a combined policy package. There are also several optional extras , including family legal protection and home emergency cover.

The online claims form is simple and quick to complete, and we received replies in around two to three hours. We also found customer services answered our calls promptly.

This review compares Esure with five leading home insurance providers , analysing their products , claims processes , customer reviews and Defaqto ratings . Taking everything into account, we conclude that Esure offers competitively priced policies, a broad range of cover, and a responsive customer experience.

Our researchers and writers are dedicated to bringing you accurate and up-to-date information so you can make an informed decision when it comes to comparing and buying home insurance.

We will only endorse home insurance products after hundreds of hours of research, policy comparisons and mystery shopping, and after taking into account verified customer feedback and reviews, and the opinions of industry experts.

To write our articles, we’ve compared (and continue to compare) hundreds of insurance policies from dozens of the UK’s insurers – big and small. We focus our research on:

  • Cost and value for money
  • The level of coverage offered (and what’s not covered as standard)
  • Customer service and ease of making a claim

All of our articles are verified by industry experts, including regulatory compliance specialists, and the policy data verified by the insurance providers themselves, so you can be assured that our content is as accurate and up to date as possible.

Even after all that, we would still recommend that you don’t just take our word for it – you should compare quotes to get the best deal for you and your home. For more information on our methodology, read our article about how we cover home insurance companies .

Esure offers one policy level, delivering either buildings or contents cover or a combined policy that includes both. It also has a broad range of optional extras, allowing customers to design customised protection for their home and belongings.

* Eligibility criteria applies

What does esure home insurance cover as standard.

Esure’s home insurance cover offers comprehensive protection as standard and has one of the most transparent, user-friendly websites our researchers have seen while reviewing home insurance providers. However, unlike other insurers that provide a figure for the maximum amount of contents insurance, Esure’s cover varies depending on the category you’re claiming for.

To complement its standard cover, Esure has several optional extras. These allow you to create customised cover to suit your needs. Each extra, however, will increase your premiums, and you should carefully consider how much additional cover you require.

When agreeing to take out any financial contract, there will be detailed – and usually complex – documentation to go through. This is especially the case with home insurance.

Our researchers have studied Esure’s policy documents, to highlight some pertinent points.

  • Contents with a value of more than £1,499 each, or bikes that are worth £500 or more, need to be declared separately as specified items
  • The personal possessions optional extra covers your cycle when away from home
  • Esure will not pay for loss or damage to gates, hedges or fences
  • Esure will not pay out for loss or damage if your home is unoccupied or unfurnished
  • Under the optional home emergency cover, your primary heat boiler is covered, provided the output does not exceed 60kW
  • Boilers over 15 years old are not covered
  • Any claims related to solar heating are excluded
  • Student cover only protects if the accommodation is not left vacant for more than 15 days
  • Special events cover extends for four weeks before and four weeks after the event

What are the excesses and no claims discounts for Esure home insurance?

Home insurance excesses typically consist of two parts – compulsory and voluntary excess. These are monetary amounts that must be paid by the policyholder when a claim is made. The compulsory amount is set by the insurance provider, while the voluntary excess is set by you, based on how much you can afford to contribute in the event of a claim. The more you can contribute, generally, the less your premiums will be.

  • Buildings policy compulsory excess: £125
  • Contents, personal possessions and specified items compulsory excess: £125
  • Escape of water compulsory excess: £450
  • Subsidence compulsory excess: £1,000
  • Home emergency call out compulsory excess: £25

No claims discount

Provided you don’t claim for a year on your home insurance, Esure offers a no claims discount upon renewal. If a further four years pass with no claims, you can protect your five years’ no claims discount for an additional premium.

Claims for the optional extras of home emergency, pest cover and family legal protection do not affect your no claims discount.

How to make a claim on your Esure policy

Making a home insurance claim with Esure can be done online, through LiveChat, or via telephone. Remember to have your policy number to hand, along with the details of your claim, and if the police have been involved, a crime reference number.

Online claims process

Step 1: Click on the reason for your claim – storm, water leak, theft at home, theft away from home, accidental damage or anything else.

Step 2: The option chosen leads to a section covering important information regarding your claim. For example, if claiming for a water leak, Esure lists all the policy exemptions and tells you what to do next.

  • If you need emergency repairs to stop the leak, ring Home Emergency if you have the optional extra
  • If you haven’t purchased that add-on and you need to stop the leak, contact a local qualified tradesperson as soon as possible
  • Take detailed photographs of the damage caused before and after the repair
  • Obtain an itemised invoice for any work they have carried out
  • Once the leak is fixed, fill in the online claim form, including the photos, invoice and any other information you feel is relevant
  • Esure may require a surveyor to assess the damage to your property before a settlement cost is agreed

Step 3: Once you’ve read the information pertaining to your claim type, you’re asked to log in to your online account.

Step 4: Fill in the online claim form, using the drop-down menus, and upload any required information.

Step 5: Our researchers typically received an email reply from Esure within two to three hours of sending the claim form.

LiveChat claim process

Making a home insurance claim using LiveChat follows the same process as the online application. You’re communicating with a chatbot until you’ve answered the initial questions; only then can you chat with a person. Our researchers typically had to wait around 10 minutes to be connected to someone. There is no alert to indicate a reply, so if you’re on a different tab or have walked away from the screen, you’re automatically disconnected after a few minutes.

Therefore, we feel it’s quicker and simpler to fill in an online claims form unless you have questions about your claim.

Phone claims process

Esure has several phone numbers depending on the reason for your claim, including a number for home emergencies.

Step 1: Esure’s emergency claims line has a short recorded message before you’re connected with a person. Our researcher’s calls were typically answered within two rings.

Step 2: After dialling the regular claims number, there’s a recorded message with prompts.

Step 3: If you’re making a new claim, there’s another recorded message. Following this, there’s a hold time.

Step 4: Our calls were answered within two rings almost every time. The claims personnel were accommodating and happy to answer our questions.

Esure’s customer service centres are based in Manchester, Reigate and Glasgow. Open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on Saturdays, and 9am to 2pm on Sundays, they can be contacted on 0345 045 8000.

Our research team contacted Esure’s customer service team across weekdays and weekends, at various times, to assess the service provided.

Step 1: There is a recorded message with a choice of options, including new quotes, policy renewal and customer services.

Step 2: After another short recorded message with two more prompts, someone typically answered our researcher’s calls in one ring.

The customer service personnel were friendly and helpful, answering questions and clarifying where necessary.

Customer reviews on Trustpilot award Esure 4.1 out of five, putting it in the ‘great’ category. With over 24,200 reviews, 78 per cent have given Esure four and five stars, while 15 per cent are one-star reviews. Only a small percentage were ‘invited’ reviews.

The majority of the positive reviews mention great customer service, good value for money – many customers say they saved money with Esure – and the straightforward claims process. Conversely, the one-star comments mainly referred to poor customer service experiences.

Esure responded to every negative review and a large number of positive reviews in a timely fashion, suggesting that the customer service team keeps track of and is responsive to customer feedback.

“ Fortunately, I’ve rarely had to claim against my home insurance. Previously, when I’ve done so with other insurance companies they have made me feel like my claim is spurious, by asking so many questions and wanting so much evidence [to prove] I actually own the stolen items. This can be difficult with items that were purchased some time ago. My experience with Esure was nothing like that at all. I submitted my claim around 6pm and, at around 4pm the very next day, Esure confirmed a cheque would be in the post. You cannot get a better service than that. I thoroughly recommend Esure and thank them for a pain-free service at a difficult time. ”

  • Terry, via Trustpilot

“I have bought a home policy and money has been taken out of my account. I log into ensure but there’s no policy to view!! I have tried calling but I haven’t been able to speak to anyone to ask where my policy is!!! No policy number, just took my money. This is a week later. Edit – update – since this review, I have now spoken to Esure and the matter has been sorted. Have improved the rating as a result.”

  • Teleri G, via Trustpilot

“Phoned today and got straight through (8am). Had three questions/changes to make to home insurance taken out the previous day. All dealt with (including cancelling auto renewal) within five minutes.”

  • John Newman, via Trustpilot

A high proportion of financial institutions and advisors use Defaqto to build informed market forecasts. Through consultations with industry professionals, consumer reports and sector analysis, Defaqto provides impartial, independent ratings.

Defaqto awards Esure’s buildings and contents policies:

★★★★★ Buildings home insurance

★★★★★ Contents home insurance

Although Esure has the highest Defaqto rating of five stars, along with Axa , Admiral , Aviva , and LV , its Trustpilot score of 4.1 places it in the midrange of the five home insurance companies reviewed.

Unlike some of the other providers we reviewed, Esure only offers one level of cover; however, it does have user-friendly policy documents, an easily navigated website and a simple online claims process.

Esure doesn’t provide matching sets cover. If this is important to you, Admiral home insurance offers the full cost of replacing the undamaged items in a set, while LV will pay 50 per cent towards them and has a better Trustpilot score than Admiral.

For home workers, Esure provides cover for home office equipment of £10,000, beating Axa’s protection by £2,500, while LV offers unlimited protection as part of its highest offer.

Esure includes student and nursing home cover as standard, up to £5,000 each. Axa only provides student cover as an optional extra, with LV setting the limits at £10,000.

However, Esure’s unlimited buildings insurance can’t be matched by Axa or LV, and neither offer a no claims discount, whereas Esure does.

We would advise anyone looking to protect their house and contents to compare home insurance cover carefully and weigh up the amount and level of cover you require.

Independent Advisor’s verdict

Esure only offers one level of cover, unlike Axa, LV, and Admiral, which each provide three. It does have a comprehensive list of items in its standard buildings, contents, and combined policies, including an unlimited amount of buildings cover. It also offers several useful optional extras, including family legal protection and home emergency cover.

Policy documents and contact details are easy to find on the Esure website, which is very user-friendly. Although LiveChat didn’t work that well for our researchers, if you need to claim on your policy, the online or telephone process is quick and efficient.

In their reviews, numerous customers mention that Esure has saved them money – in some cases hundreds of pounds – with even the negative reviews not citing cost as a reason for the one- or two-star review. This suggests that Esure provides competitively priced policies. Combine this with the number of items included in its cover, the easy online claims process, and responsive customer service personnel, and Esure is well worth considering for your home insurance.
