When Is The Best Time Of The Year To Visit Panama?

This is a relative question because depending on your reasons and which activities are attracting you to Panama, the time of year to visit will change.

However, most will agree that the best time of the year to visit Panama for a holiday is during the dry season between January, February and March.

The period from mid-December to March sees the most pleasant temperatures. You will get dry days with plenty of sunshine . There is also a gentle breeze with some cloud coverage so it brings relief from the sun and high temperatures.

That said, there are some questions you should ask yourself to help narrow down the best time of the year to visit Panama for you . Answer these questions to get started:

  • Which part of the country are you thinking of exploring?
  • Are you okay with variable terrains?
  • Does the presence of crowds bother you?
  • Does high humidity have a negative impact on your comfort?
  • Are you comfortable with cooler or warmer temperatures?
  • Do you lean towards spending your time outdoors hiking, by the beach or delving into a new city experience?

Give these questions some thought, and once you’ve determined the answers, you’ll be on your way to discovering when the best time to visit Panama is for you.

Ultimately,

  • The best times for dry weather is between January and March
  • The best time for budget travellers is April to early December
  • The best time for surfers is May to November

What We Think

We think the best time to visit Panama is during the shoulder seasons . In Panama, these are a couple of weeks during mid-December and mid-April to early May . These shoulder months bring short spells of sunshine between the wet and dry seasons and fewer crowds. Due to this, they are actually great times to visit Panama! 👉 Further Reading We think Panama is worth visiting, find out why here!

What Is The Worst Time To Visit Panama?

Is it the wet season?

Again, this is relative. If you’re a surfer and want to visit Panama to enjoy its waves, then the rainy season is the best time to visit! This isn’t true for those of you seeking endless days on the beach or wanting to experience Panama’s incredible hiking trails.

Even so, most will agree that the worst time to visit Panama is during the wet season , especially the months of October and November which see the most rainfall. Then again, the country holds some fantastic festivals during these months!

That said, it’s a busy time for domestic travel due to the number of national holidays. You’ll find many roads are blocked due to parades and the shops and businesses all but shut down. So, not ideal if you’re trying to travel and have a relaxing holiday.

  • The worst times for wet weather is October and November
  • The worst times for budget travellers is late-December to March
  • If you’re looking for beach days, the worst time to visit is…depends on what side of the country you go!

Caught you out? We were confused at first, too…Panama has an interesting geological topography and climate.

The best time to of the year to visit Panama to witness the natural beauty is during wet season

Panama Geographic Overview

Panama has both a Caribbean side and a Pacific side and is generally categorised into two climates : dry and wet . But the Caribbean side doesn’t really see a dry season.

This is because although Panama has a tropical weather pattern created by the collision of the north and south Trade Winds, it features a subclimate on the Caribbean side: an equatorial climate.

You can expect it to be hot and rainy all year round on the north Caribbean coast , as is expected by an equatorial climate but, tropical on the Pacific Coast.

Tropical climates are categorised by hot weather but with a dry and wet season.

The Caribbean Side of Panama has a sub-tropical equatorial climate.

Panama is a Central American country located just 8 degrees north of the equator , its close proximity to the equator is the reason why it has a tropical climate. It doesn’t matter what side of the country you are on; temperatures will be fairly consistent all year round.

In fact, the landscape is what alters the temperatures. North of the Isthmus, Panama has a central mountain range which divides the Pacific Coast and Caribbean Coast.

You will find that the temperatures vary with altitude rather than with seasons. The higher you go, the cooler it becomes and even the nights can become chilly. Whereas, in the lowlands, it is hot and humid during the day and only slightly cooling off to give pleasant nights.

The North Pacific Coast sees drier plains than the South as it is sheltered by Panama’s mountainous spine. However, due to this, the south is more lustrous. If you’re visiting during the wet season the Azuero Peninsula could be a great shout as it sits in the north Pacific side of Panama!

Our Experience Visiting Panama

“There are more species of birds and plants in Panama — a country the size of South Carolina — than there are in all of Canada and the United States combined.” Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

Jack and I have only been to Panama once but it was enough to carve the destination into our hearts forever. So much so that we are already planning a return trip!

The start of my journey to Panama found me on a sailing boat in early May 2022. Departing from Colombia’s popular port city of Cartagena, I was heading for the San Blas Islands on a 5-day sailing trip.

Jack decided to fly straight to Panama City and meet me after this adventure as he isn’t a fan of boats! It was a decision he questions now and again…

San Blas Islands sailing trip May 2022

The San Blas Islands were my first encounter with Panama. They were something special and along with 8 other people we created lifetime memories there. If you get the chance to go, make sure you plan for at least a day trip to the San Blas Islands, preferably more!

The weather was perfect . We had sunny skies for the most part although there were a few dark clouds and the odd shower but these didn’t last long and were generally at night. There was one time we were snorkelling and soft droplets began to fall, but the water was warm and, in my opinion, it made the activity even better!

May is a good time to visit the San Blas islands in Panama

May is the start of the rainy season , but even if there are heavier skies the downpours seem to be less frequent and softer on the Caribbean side.

After the San Blas Islands, I headed to Panama City where we spent a few days . We experienced only one day of rain – when we were walking around Casco Viejo . And, although the skies were duller the sun still made a constant appearance.

By the time we reached Playa Venao on the Azuero Peninsula , we had a solid week of rain. We were there to surf and since we were in the water most of the day it didn’t affect us. However, there was no opportunity for sunbathing.

Surfing at Playa Venao beach in Panama

Afterwards, we headed to Boquete which is a town in Panama’s central mountain range. There, we had a fantastic time hiking , exploring and eating our way through local delicacies.

👉 Related Post: We loved Boquete and so to help you plan your visit we’ve written a guide for where to stay to suit ALL BUDGETS!

We saw rain but not as frequently as the week before and generally only in the evening and night. The mornings were fresh and filled with wildlife , and when we did most of our exploration – this was the best time to take a guided wildlife tour through the jungles.

May is the best time of the year for visiting Boquete in Panama

Would We Recommend Visiting Panama In May?

Panama is a year-round destination and although May is thought of as a bad time to visit we had a great time. It is just at the end of the shoulder season which means you’re likely to get both sunshine and rain , with more rain towards the end of the month.

Since we enjoy hiking and nature experiences just as much as beach days we weren’t bothered that we couldn’t enjoy sunbathing. If the beach is what you’re after, I would suggest visiting mid-April instead.

Hiking in Boquete

For all other activities, May is a good time to visit. Since it falls into the off-season, attractions are cheaper , there are fewer tourists and accommodation is more affordable. This makes May a great time to visit if you’re travelling on a budget.

During May and with most of the wet season you’ll notice the downpours lasting no more than an hour or two during the day with most occurring at night. Therefore, it is still possible to plan activities but aim for the mornings.

As the wet season progresses, hiking trails can become bogged down, soggy and dangerous so I also wouldn’t recommend visiting later in the season if you want to go hiking.

Even in the rain, visiting Panama was an incredible experience.

For nature enthusiasts, the rainforest hiking experiences are truly enchanting during this time as the forests are lustrous and green following the rainy season.

Adventurers can also embrace the thrill of kitesurfing along the coast. With the Trade Winds at their strongest from December to mid-February you’ll get the perfect conditions for this exhilarating sport.

The downside is that it’s one of the busiest months to visit Panama . January stands out as a popular month of the year where the skies are often exceptionally clear, creating a stunning backdrop but attracting the most crowds and higher prices.

The weather is warm and dry , making it an excellent time for beach lovers and rainforest hiking. It’s the perfect time to visit if you want to explore the islands on the Pacific Coast, go snorkelling and take part in adventure sports such as kitesurfing

Just keep in mind, it’s a bustling time to explore this beautiful country so you can expect high prices for tourist attractions and accommodations. You’ll need to book activities in advance to ensure they don’t get booked up so pre-planning is a must!

In March, Panama continues its sunny streak , much like January and February. With an average temperature of 28ºC, it’s still the height of the dry season . Panama’s golden beaches and rainforest hikes remain irresistible.

Additionally, it’s an excellent time to explore places like Bocas del Toro and Guna Yala – San Blas Islands . Notably, Bocas del Toro enjoys two relatively dry spells, one being around March, making it a prime time to visit this coastal gem.

Again, expect higher prices.

In April, Panama has the warmest of temperatures , with an average of 29ºC that can occasionally peak at 32ºC. It marks the end of the dry season , offering the last of the dry weather up until mid-April.

Easter is a highlight with the country celebrating this holiday. The beaches get crowded and you’ll find daytime highs often reaching over 30ºC.

It’s worth noting that Easter coincides with spring break , so expect bustling crowds if you’re visiting during this period.

This is an ideal time for hiking in the forests as you’ll be shaded from the heat by tropical trees. But, it’s important to keep in mind that mid-April signals the start of the wet season. However, this shoulder season can be an excellent period to visit, as prices start to drop.

Just remember that while April brings warmth, sunshine isn’t always guaranteed and it begins to get humid . Puffy hair anyone?

If you’re a surf enthusiast, it’s an exciting time as waves begin to grow larger, creating ideal conditions for catching the perfect ride!  Hiking is still possible and the wetter weather brings fewer crowds and more affordable rates.

Nature lovers will find May remarkable, as it’s the start of the nesting season for loggerhead and green sea turtles along the Caribbean coast.

You can expect the odd showers at the start of the month and becomes more frequent towards the end. Even so, rain showers during the wet season last no more than an hour or two during the day.

Best places to visit during May in Panama :

Panama In June

Flags out in Panama City during festivals, a great time to visit the country is June

This month is a dream for surfers , as the waves are at their best, providing thrilling rides along the coast. It’s also a fantastic time for nature enthusiasts as it can be one of the best times to spot wildlife.

The rain brings life to the jungle and oceans making it the very best time to experience water based-activities. You’ll find that the lakes and rivers fill and flow faster so if you fancy white water rafting , this is the month to visit.

Additionally, June marks the celebration of the Corpus Christi festival in La Villa de Los Santos, a cultural highlight with vibrant parades and festivities.

However, it’s essential to note that humidity soars in June, and rain showers, along with regular thunderstorms, become more frequent. Be prepared for a downpour if you plan to explore Panama during this time.

The good news is that even though the skies are in near-constant cloud coverage, the rain lasts only for an hour or two and tends to be mid to late afternoon.

Best places to visit during June in Panama :

Panama In July

Fortifications at Portobelo in Panama

In July, Panama embraces a comfortable average temperature of 27ºC . It’s a haven for surfers along the Pacific Coast, where the best waves continue to form; head to Playa Venao on the Azuero Peninsula for a great experience.

While the Caribbean Coast still sees regular showers it is drier in comparison to the Pacific side, for history enthusiasts, this is a good time to visit Portobelo .

Surprisingly, the Pacific Coast is drier than that in May and June; humidity is also slightly lower than in July.

July also sees the start of the humpback whale migration which attracts wildlife fanatics to the Pacific Coast. July is still considered an off-peak month for visitors, meaning you can find better hotel rates and fewer crowds.

July is also quite a festive month in Panama, with a range of celebrations, including the Fiesta de Virgen del Carmen in Santa Catalina, Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Isla Taboga, and two more in Las Tablas.

It’s a great time to immerse yourself in the rich cultural traditions of Panama!

Panama In August

August is the best time of the year to visit Panama for wale watching

The month of August in Panama is a haven for divers and wildlife enthusiasts as humpback whales, sharks, and orcas continue to gather in their thousands along the Pacific shoreline. The best place to spot them is at Pearl Island.

For surfers, the waves are still inviting , making it a fantastic time for riding the waves. However, it’s worth noting that August is the cloudiest month of the year in Panama.

Despite the clouds, it’s still possible to visit the Caribbean side of Panama. The San Blas Islands typically see rain for only an hour or so in the afternoon but have warm, sunny skies in the morning. The rain actually brings a welcome relief from the humidity, leaving clear skies afterwards.

In the lush rainforests, August marks a thriving period , with nature bursting with life and greenery. It’s a unique time to witness Panama’s natural beauty in full bloom.

Panama In September

Bocas del Toro

In September, Panama is well and truly into the wet season, offering an average temperature of 27ºC. This month continues to present an exciting opportunity for divers and wildlife enthusiasts , as humpback whales, sharks, and orcas gather off the Pacific coast.

However, due to the rain, there’s less visibility for scuba diving and snorkelling so it’s preferable to take boat trips to see them rather than underwater adventures.

September also marks the last chance to experience Panama ‘s hiking trails before heavy rains set in, so it’s a unique time to explore the country with fewer visitors and better rates, ideal for budget travellers!

Surfers will continue to find fantastic waves during this season. For those of you interested in the Bocas del Toro island s, September is surprisingly one of the driest months to visit.

Keep in mind that for hiking, towards the end of September, it isn’t the most ideal time to explore, as it marks the beginning of a wetter period that extends into October and November.

Best places to visit during September in Panama :

Panama In October

Panama City traditional attire and headdress

In October, Panama offers a comfortable average temperature of 26ºC . This is the prime time to experience Panama with as few visitors as possible, ensuring a more tranquil exploration of the country.

The landscape thrives during this month, creating a vivid rainforest. The rivers and lakes are full and new life has sprung into every nook and cranny of the country. It continues to be a great time to observe the whale migration.

Although daily rain is guaranteed, the downpours are typically confined to a few hours in the late afternoon. Luckily, the weather is quite predictable, allowing for easy itinerary planning.

The best part is Panama begins to celebrate regional fairs during October, offering a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural traditions.

For those interested in visiting Bocas del Toro , note that Bocas enjoys two relatively dry spells, one of which is in October. This makes it a great time to explore this coastal treasure!

Best places to visit during October in Panama :

Panama In November

November is the best time to visit Panama for budget travellers as places like Casco Viejo will be at their cheapest.

In November, Panama continues to offer a pleasant average temperature of 26ºC. It’s still the best time to experience the country with as few visitors as possible.

However, it’s worth noting that the rain can be unrelenting in November, with the most rain per year, often up to 5 hours a day, although this is still usually in the afternoons.

This month is when the whole country takes off to celebrate multiple independence-related festivals, a time of cultural richness and celebrations from both Spain and Colombia.

Panama City tends to empty out as people head to the beaches, but the rain, at times torrential, still accompanies the festivities.

November isn’t the best time to visit the Caribbean Coast, as it experiences heavy rainfall. However, the end of November sees a drastic change in weather, with the rains starting to die off, particularly on the Pacific Coast.

If you’re looking for the most budget-friendly options, November is the cheapest time of the year to visit Panama.

Again, the month continues to be a unique opportunity to witness humpback whales from both the northern and southern hemispheres as they migrate to mate and give birth, creating a remarkable natural spectacle.

Panama In December

The best time of the year to visit Panama is December for the holiday season

In December, Panama’s average temperature remains 26ºC, setting the stage for a delightful holiday season . However, it’s essential to pre-book accommodations, as Christmas and the period onwards mark the start of the dry season , drawing visitors from around the world.

As the month progresses, the weather warms up, and by mid-December , Panama experiences a dramatic decrease in rainfall , making it an excellent time to explore. The sea temperatures are also comfortable, at around 27°C (81°F).

If your plan is to witness the wonder of the Panama Canal , mid-December just before Christmas and New Year’s is the best time to visit, ensuring a smooth and memorable journey through this engineering marvel.

The rainforests in December are truly special, buzzing with new life after the rains. It’s an exceptional time to immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Panama.

It’s also the best time to take to the water, activities such as white water rafting and kitesurfing are ideal during this period.

Does Panama Have Seasons?

Panama does not have the typical four seasons most of the northern hemisphere experiences. Instead of spring, summer, autumn and winter, Panama has only two seasons: dry and wet.

However, these seasons can differ slightly depending on which month and which side of the country you visit.

This is due, in part, to the Isthmus of Panama, Panama’s central mountain spine and the convergence of the northern and southern Trade Winds.

Generally, the Caribbean Coast will remain damp throughout the year although the sun will appear in the mornings and afternoon. During the wet season, areas such as Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean side of Panama actually experience their driest months!

The Pacific coast sees a typical tropical climate. The dry season is from mid-December to mid-April whereas the wet season starts from mid-April and ends mid-December.

That said, Panama is a year-round destination.

Sailing trip to Panama

During the dry season in Panama, most of the country enjoys sunny days and minimal rainfall. However, as I mentioned the Caribbean Coast will still experience occasional showers as will the highlands.

Due to the guaranteed sunshine, this is the busiest time for visiting Panama and therefore it becomes the most expensive time to visit as well.

For hiking, popular places like Boquete and the group excursions into the national parks from Panama City can become crowded alongside excursions to the stunning San Blas Archipelago.

👉 It’s best to pre-book all your tours during the high season. We use Get Your Guide and Viator to pre-book our tours. They are both safe and reputable companies that we love!

While it’s ideal for hiking and water-based sports, the wind during this season can reduce visibility for snorkelers, so keep that in mind if you’re planning aquatic adventures!

The peak season encompasses major holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter, as well as Carnival season.

Cloud forest in Panama

The rainy season in Panama stretches from mid-April through December , with its peak occurring in late October and November. During these wettest months, travel in the highlands can become challenging, if not impossible.

The low season in Panama corresponds to the rainy months, particularly from June through November. This is when you’ll find the most affordable rates in travel, tours and accommodation.

The highlight of the wet season is the beauty of Panama’s natural landscape which truly flourishes. The annual whale migration also takes place during this season which is perfect for nature enthusiasts.

On the Pacific side, you’ll encounter thunderstorms and brief, intense tropical downpours. Meanwhile, on the Caribbean side, showers are less frequent, often occurring at night.

The rain is quite predictable which means it’s possible to plan your itinerary if you’re visiting during this period.

Other good reasons for visiting Panama in April include good surfing conditions (as better waves begin to roll in during the spring), as well as cheaper costs compared to more popular months like December and January . If you’re a spontaneous traveler then you’ll be able to find great last-minute deals too!

How long should I Spend in Panama?

Panama tends to be traveled through quicker than other Central American countries, which is usually because there are less destinations to see (as well as most heading for the large airport in Panama City).

backpacking panama flag

We feel a minimum of 1 week is a good amount of time to spend exploring the very best of Panama. Our 5 days in Panama itinerary covers many activities too.

You’ll be able to visit different islands, as well as get some memorable hiking trips in too on the mainland. If you’re looking to relax further in areas like Boquete, or learn how to surf, then you will want to plan between 2-4 weeks in Panama.

Top things to do in Panama

Let’s now explore 5 of the very best things to do in Panama.

Visit the San Blas Islands

By far the most memorable place we have seen in Panama has to be the San Blas Islands. With a collection of 365 islets and tiny cayes, you’ll feel a long ways away from mainland Panama here.

san blas panama

These belong to the autonomous tribe of the Kuna Yala , who live a very basic lifestyle and support themselves by selling fresh coconuts and fish caught from the surrounding waters. Isla Perro Chico is one of the most popular islands, which has small wooden huts to stay in, as well as a small shipwreck just off the incredible, turquoise waters .

You’ll need to head with a tour to get here, and we highly recommend this incredible 4 Day Experience Tour where you’ll visit all of the very best islands and spots. You’ll also get to sleep on the islands, and can also get involved with catching and cooking dinner if you’re feeling up for it!

Island Hopping in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago

Those who love picturesque islands, red sunsets and a solid backpacking scene will love the Bocas del Toro archipelago.

Located in the north of Panama, these islands have now become a major stopping-off point for travelers heading between Costa Rica and Panama. There are many beautiful beaches worth visiting here, including Starfish Beach – where you can find many of these crimson-coloured friends just chilling about.

Other beaches worth visiting include Bluff Beach for its incredible sands and long coastline. Before enjoying the great nightlife that these islands have to offer, you can also enjoy various water activities too. Surf enthusiasts will be pleasantly surprised with the good conditions here, as well as divers too where there are some really clear visibility conditions under the water .

Go Hiking in the Valle de Antón

Slowly growing in popularity, this fertile area of land is surrounded by dormant volcanoes and is a perfect destination for getting off the grid and exploring in peace.

valle de anton panama

It’s actually one of George’s favourite Latin American hiking areas, which you can read about here.

There’s various paths which you’ll want to lace up for, including La India Dormida which offers stunning views above the clouds and nearby canopy. Cerro de Gaital is another, which also offers a thicker canopy to walk through on your way to the top.

It’s worth visiting the beautiful falls of Chorro Macho on your way back to the town, where you can then enjoy the El Valle Hot Springs for a much deserved relaxation and out time.

Explore the Panama Canal

One of the world’s most impressive mechanical feats – there’s no other site quite like the Panama Canal . Connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific Ocean, this 65 km thin strip of passageway is extremely important for transport vessels and ships from all corners of the globe.

panama canal

Built in 1904, it’s since undergone several developments such as the inclusion of several locks, which allow ships to pass between different levels of waters. From Panama City you can explore the Miraflores Lock which is the closest, where you can watch ships carefully pass the extremely-tight passageways onto their next destination.

You’ll also be able to visit the on-site museum, learning how the canal was made as well as just how important it is for global trade and development. We recommend joining this tour , where you’ll explore the canal as well as other top sites in the capital such as the Bridge of the Americas and Amador Causeway .

Head to the mountainous town of Boquete

Located in the north of Panama we can find this cool mountain town, which has become one of the must-visits of an itinerary through Panama. Due to the unique microclimate of the region, Boquete is home to some of the very best coffee in Central America .

backpacking panama bus

Those who love a good brew will want to buy some of the pretty cheap bags going here for sure! You can also head with this day tour , where you’ll visit a notorious coffee plantation and get to sample the very best blends.

Thrill seekers will also love this area, where there are various companies who will take you out white-water river rafting along its hectic rivers, as well as rock climbing in some pretty surreal settings.

It’s also worth ascending Barú Volcano whilst you’re here too – which standing at a total height of 3474 metres, is the overall highest volcano in the country.

Squeezed between between seven and nine degrees north of the equator, Panama is located firmly within the tropics, with a climate to match: relentlessly hot and humid in the lowlands, cooling off fractionally to give balmy nights, whereas in the highlands, temperatures vary significantly with altitude, and can be chilly at night.

Tailor-made trips for   Panama

Most travellers see the shorter dry season (verano, “summer”), which runs from late December to the end of April, as the best time to visit Panama, and with good reason. Azure skies predominate, at least on the drier Pacific plains, sheltered by Panama’s mountainous spine. The firmer going underfoot makes it easier to travel on unpaved roads and explore the rainforests, and the reduced rainwater run-off ensures clearer waters to swim in. The dry season also includes the lively holiday periods of Christmas, New Year, Carnaval and Holy Week, when flights and hotels in popular tourist spots are at a premium.

You’ll avoid the crowds and the mark-ups in the rainy season (invierno, “winter”), which stretches from May to December. Although the mountainous and rainforested regions in Panama are best avoided during the wettest months, since peaks are constantly swathed in cloud and tracks are boggy, if you stick to the lowland areas on the Pacific coast, the downpours, while frequent and intense, rarely last more than a few hours at a time, leaving plenty of sunny, dry periods to enjoy. In particular, the otherwise parched Azuero Peninsula offers much more picturesque scenery during its understated rainy season.

By contrast, the Caribbean coast receives almost twice as much rain as the Pacific, with virtually no recognizable dry season. Regional variations impact here too: the Trade Winds (at their strongest Dec to mid-Feb) make the water choppy and outer islands inaccessible in Bocas del Toro and Kuna Yala, while Bocas enjoys two relatively dry spells around March and October.

The following lists a few highlights on Panama’s festivals calendar. There are even more festivals on the Azuero Peninsula.

Feria de las Flores y del Café in Boquete (date varies).

Comarca de Guna Yala (Feb 25) celebrates the Guna Revolution of 1925, their independence day; Carnaval (Feb/March) celebrated all over the country, but especially in Las Tablas and Panama City, with an aquatic version in Penonomé; Festival de los Diablos y Congos, biennially in Portobelo (2015, 2017, date varies).

March/April

Semana Santa. Celebrated everywhere, but most colourfully in La Villa de Los Santos, Pesé and Guararé, on the Azuero Peninsula.

Feria de las Orquideas in Boquete (date varies); Feria International del Azuero in La Villa de Los Santos (date varies).

Corpus Christi (date varies) in La Villa de Los Santos.

Nuestra Señora del Carmen (July 16) on Isla Taboga; Patronales de La Santa Librada and Festival de la Pollera in Las Tablas (July 20–22).

Festival del Manito Ocueño (date varies) in Ocú.

Festival of Nogagope (Oct 10–12) on Isla Tigre, Comarca de Guna Yala; Feria Guna (mid-Oct) on Isla Tigre; Festival de la Mejorana (five days mid-Oct) in Guararé; Fiesta de Cristo Negro (Oct 21) in Portobelo.

November 10

The “First Cry of Independence”, Independence Day, celebrated as part of “El Mes de la Patria”. Cities and towns across the nation put on parades featuring school drumming troupes and majorettes, which the whole population comes out to watch.

Best Time to Visit Panama by Season

With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, Panama follows a typical tropical weather pattern. The dry season runs from mid-December to mid-April, and the wet season lasts from May to December. The Caribbean Coast receives more rainfall while the Pacific Coast offers slightly lower temperatures.

Panama is a year-round destination with rain showers during the wet season lasting no more than an hour or two during the day and the environs turning a beautiful shade of green. If, however, you want to laze under a warm Caribbean sun with uninterrupted hours of beach bliss, the best months to visit Panama are January, February, and March, when day time temperatures are in the 80’s, and there’s plenty of sunshine to go around. The wet season starts in May with short but heavy rain spells making an appearance. The months of July to September are ideal for whale watching in Panama when the waters are rife with breaching humpback whales and dolphins too! October and November see the most rainfall. It’s a busy time for domestic travel due to a number of national holidays. During festivals such as Christmas, New Year, Easter and the Carnival, traveling to Panama may be difficult due to road-blocks, parades and closure of shops and businesses.

What to pack

City exploration calls for lightweight pants and skirts and a good pair of walking shoes. You will find local women dressed in smart dresses, and we recommend packing a few of those for times when you want to attend a party or eat out at an upscale restaurant. Semi-formal trousers and short-sleeved shirts work well for men.

Panama experiences a typical tropical weather pattern with short bursts of rain happening throughout the year. It is wise to pack a lightweight rain jacket and rainproof phone cover, even if you are visiting the country during the dry season.

When is the best time to visit Panama?

  • Bocas del Toro
  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit Panama is between January and mid-April, which is the driest part of the year and generally considered the time to see this tropical country at its best.

Consider travel during the rest of the year if you’re not bothered by a bit of rain. Temperatures stay at an average of 30°C, these times can offer great value, and you may have the chance to experience several well-loved Panamanian events and festivals.

There are short, heavy bursts of rain almost daily on the Caribbean coast, while the Pacific coast has a pronounced wet season from May to November.

Snorkeling

Visiting Panama in January - March

With plenty of sun and only rare showers, January to March is a popular time to travel in Panama, with visitors from around the world descending on the country (so it’s best to plan your trip well in advance). Minimal rains will also give you excellent visibility if you wish to snorkel or dive.

Events & Festivals

  • The town of Boquete in western Panama holds its annual Feria de la Flores y del Café (Flower and Coffee Festival) in mid-January, showcasing the region’s produce and traditional dancing.
  • Costumes, music and decorated floats parade through towns across the country during March’s carnival.
  • The Panama Jazz Festival, held each January in Panama City, is quickly becoming one of the best of its kind in Latin America.

Old Panama City

Visiting Panama in April

April is a midpoint between Panama’s busy dry season and the less popular, rainier green season. Temperatures and humidity begin to rise, but this month also offers the opportunity to experience the country through the eyes of a local at several major festivals. Traffic can be busy, and availability can still be limited for some areas, so some forward planning is required.

  • Boquete once more shows off its flora with its Feria de las Orquídeas (Orchid Festival) in mid-April.
  • Easter is an important national holiday in Panama, celebrated with processions, services and feasting throughout the country.

Cathedral in Chitre

Visiting Panama in May - August

From May to August, the tropical rains begin in earnest. This doesn’t always deter visitors, with many North Americans and Europeans choosing to visit Panama during their summertime. While you can expect typically short, tropical thunderstorms during this period, adrenaline-seekers can take advantage: heavier rains swell the rivers and create excellent conditions for rafting.

  • The small city of Chitré and Los Santos Province celebrate Corpus Christi, and Los Santos’s idiosyncratic celebrations include costumed dancers dressed as ‘diablicos sucios’ (‘dirty devils’), a tradition dating back to colonial times.

Bocas del Toro

Visiting Panama in September - November

To experience Panama with as few visitors as possible, this is the time to go. If you accept rain as an eventuality, you’ll be able to witness a number of festivals, culminating with three riotous Independence Day celebrations in November. Travel conditions are only for the hardy, with roads becoming muddy and sometimes closed for repairs due to strong thunderstorms.

  • The area of Bocas del Toro celebrates its fishing heritage with the Feria del Mar (Festival of the Sea) in mid-September.
  • November 3, 4 and 28 are all celebrated as national Independence Days, and see huge parties throughout the country.

The crumbling architecture of Panama City's old town

Visiting Panama in December

At the year’s end, the rains give way to bright sunshine throughout most of the country. This can be one of the most rewarding times of year to visit, though visitor numbers start to pick up again leading into Christmas and New Year’s Eve. We advise avoiding the coastal beaches of Bocas del Toro , which experience unusually heavy rains in December.

Best Time to Visit Panama

Year-round except in November, Panama is a lovely place to go on vacation. However, this does not negate the fact that there are cheaper times of the year and ideal times to travel. Learn when to visit Panama and when it is most affordable and popular.

The months of December through March are among the best for traveling to Panama because of the comfortable temperatures, dry days, and lots of sunshine that they experience. If you want to take part in the celebrations, you’ll need to make arrangements well in advance because many tourists travel to the nation around Christmas, New Year’s, and the Carnival, which takes place in early February or February.

Table of Contents

Weather In Panama

During the dry season, there is hardly any rain. Contrarily, during the wet season, it will rain almost every day, though these spurts don’t always last for more than an hour.

The worst month with the heaviest, most persistent rain is usually November. Avoid going in November if you want to avoid the wettest conditions.

However, the rainy season does have some advantages, such as providing a break from the heat during a daily shower and everything is a vibrant green as opposed to the dry season, when what is typically green turns a bit brown due to the lack of rainfall.

Best Time To Visit Panama By Season

Panama experiences typical tropical weather because it is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean on two sides. The wet season lasts from May to December, and the dry season lasts from mid-December to mid-April. The Caribbean Coast receives more rainfall while the Pacific Coast offers slightly lower temperatures.

  • High season (which includes the first week of November, Easter, Christmas, and New Year’s). Prices are generally higher during the high season, particularly in hotels and resorts where local tourists will be in their droves.
  • Mid-season (coincides with the dry season, which lasts from December to April). On the Pacific coast and in Panama City during the middle of the season, it may rain occasionally, but costs are not as high.
  • Low season (the period from May to November that is rainy). Although lodging, airfare, and resorts in general are less expensive, you might experience a lot of rain throughout the nation.

Rain showers during the wet season last no longer than an hour or two during the day, and the surroundings turn a lovely shade of green. Panama is a year-round destination. The best times to visit Panama are in January, February, and March when daytime temperatures are in the 80s and there is plenty of sunshine if you prefer to spend your days lounging in the warm Caribbean sun and enjoying endless hours of beach bliss. May marks the beginning of the wet season, which is marked by brief but intense downpours. When humpback whales and dolphins are abundant in Panama’s waters breaching, the months of July to September are ideal for whale watching! October and November see the most rainfall. Due to several national holidays, it’s a busy time for domestic travel. Traveling to Panama may be challenging around holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, Easter, and Carnival because of roadblocks, parades, and store and business closures.

Best Time to Visit Panama

Can I Travel to Panama In November

Overall, there is only one bad time of year to travel to Panama: November is the month with the worst rainfall of all and the most national holidays. This results in a hotel occupancy rate of 100% among locals, and many normally open Panamanian businesses close for holidays. In order to maximize your experience in Panama, book your stay any time of the year except during November

When To Visit The Caribbean Coast Of Panama

This area of Panama experiences more rain than the region close to the Pacific Ocean; in fact, it practically rains nonstop here. Because of the tropical climate’s frequent and high levels of humidity, the year-round pleasant temperature ranges between 25 and 32 degrees Celsius.

When To Visit The Pacific Coast Of Panama

On the other hand, despite the fact that the climate and temperatures are the same, this region has a dry season that will let you take in the beauty of the surroundings without getting wet. The months of January, February, March, and April are where this dry season is most intense. As a result, these are the ideal months for hiking and other adventurous activities.

Other regions of Panama, like the San Blas Archipelago or Taboga Island, have their own distinctive features.

Although the months of December through April are the busiest for tourists, you can visit the nation and take in its many sights almost all year long.

Before planning a trip to Panama, you should primarily think about the weather, cost, and availability.

Tourists continue to flock to the Pacific Coast because of the warm and dry periods. Due to the arrival of the Carnaval in Panama City, February is the best time to visit here, based on when Ash Wednesday falls .

  • In this country, the four days leading up to the Catholic Lent season are known as Carnival.
  • You get to participate in a number of celebrations, marches, parades, and music in general.
  • Small communities on the Azuero Peninsula , especially Las Tablas other than Panama City, host the biggest celebrations.
  • Mojaderos, or water-spraying vehicles, are likely to be present, so dress appropriately.
  • Areas in and around Portobelo celebrate the Diablos y Congos two weeks following Carnival.

Coiba islands

Another of the driest periods of the year, March is a part of Panama’s dry season. A hot spring vacation would be ideal, given this month’s weather. Semana Santa, a fantastic cultural holiday, may take place or is dependent on the dates of Easter.

  • When you’re willing to venture off the usual path, you can discover solitude and peace on the Peninsula de Azuero.
  • Travelers who wish to remain at the center of the action can visit here.
  • Santa Catalina is located next to a small village. It is widely known for its surfing.

  • There are carnival attractions, food booths, and many local manufacturers offering handmade goods.

Best Time to Visit Panama, Darien National Park

You can take part in the Semana Santa activities if Easter falls in April. Throughout the nation, there are crucifixion montages and parades during Holy Week. Many tourists prefer to remain in the countryside during this period to experience the most genuine regional customs.

  • This is the best time for you to travel to Panama when observing biodiversity in the rainforest is a top goal.
  • The most anticipated celebration is the Feria de Orquideas. Commonly known as the Orchid Festival organized in Boquete, it marks the onset of spring.
  • This festival is famous for different species of blooming flowers in mid-April, even though it is not as large as the Flower Festival.
  • The end of April sees the Feria Internacional de Azuero. It is more often called the Azuero International Fair.
  • It is regarded as one of the biggest events in the area. This is because it often draws tourists across the nation.

Bocas del Toro

In this location, the wet season typically lasts for roughly half the year and begins in May. When it’s raining, you can enjoy casual sightseeing in Panama’s stunning and primitive towns and villages.

  • Wonderful galleries, eateries, and old neighborhoods can be found, making it the perfect destination when it is raining.

  • Panamanians enjoy the day off.
  • So, you may take advantage of the numerous parades or celebrations.
  • They promise a fun time and a plethora of food.
  • One of the most important traditional occasions here is the Manito Festival.
  • At Ocu, in the province of Herrera, it is organized in the middle of August.
  • The Campesino Wedding, local agricultural customs, and amusing dancing and entertaining competitions are all covered during this four-day event.

There’s quite a lot to appreciate about Panama in September, even though most tourists attempt to avoid the rainy season when visiting tropical regions. It seldom rains all day. So, you will have ample time to relax on the beach. You can also go surfing on big waves.

  • The sea turtle hatchlings often emerge in September.
  • This allows you to witness this miraculous process unfold at their nesting locations, like the coast of Isla Canas.
  • Those who decide to travel to the San Blas Islands in September gain from the intimate and genuine adventure.
  • There are fewer tourists around.
  • Most tourism and hospitality establishments provide discounts to guests.
  • This makes San Blas Islands affordable.
  • Taking advantage of a nearly ideal climate, the International Sea Fair of Bocas del Toro is hosted every year in September.
  • Vendors showcasing culinary traditions are among its highlights
  • These traditions are typically focused on shellfish and fish.
  • Several folk performers from across the nation showcase dances and native rhythms at night.

Panama Canal's Miraflores Locks

November is the best month to visit or stay in Panama City . Just keep the upcoming public holidays in mind when scheduling museum trips. Then you won’t miss out on anything.

  • In the capital, there is plenty to explore and do.
  • This includes indoor activities for heavy rain.
  • Visit the tourist center near the Panama Canal’s Miraflores Locks .
  • Or, take refuge from the downpour at the Biomuseo.
  • You can stroll through the streets of Casco Viejo when the skies clear out.

  • They are the most important ones to remember Panama’s freedom.
  • In David, Panama City, and other locations, engage in parades, festivities, as well as other events.
  • Colonial Day occurs on November 5th.
  • It commemorates the date in 1903.
  • This was when residents of Colon stopped the Colombian Army from advancing toward Panama City.
  • Volcán’s Feria de las Tierras Altas is a five-day highland celebration.
  • It honors agricultural production, crafts, arts, and tradition in the last days of November.

Christmas holidays

Due to the onset of the Panamanian dry period in December and the popularity of Christmas, it is a preferred time to travel there. Combining ideal beach holiday temperatures will result in the greatest expenditures for lodging and transportation. Both of these should be reserved far in advance.

  • Panama’s roads will be fixed and dry by the end of December.
  • To celebrate the Christmas holidays in other locales, you might take a pre-planned road trip.
  • The Sobresaltos dance festival is a lively musical event that takes place in Casco Viejo, Panama City , every December.
  • There are theatrical companies, bird-watching organizations, and a variety of other attractions at the contemporary fest.
  • When you explore the village regions, you will find horse parades and neighborhood bullfights.

The dry and wet seasons divide Panama’s climate into two halves. A lot of people travel to the country during the dry season. However, the wet season offers offbeat community celebrations and distinctive experiences.

In Conclusion,  The decision on which is the best time to go to Panama is greatly influenced by the varied climate. However, the main factors will be your interests and the overall purpose of the trip. Therefore, you can plan for the vacation while keeping your preferences, budget, and weather in mind.

The best time to cruise the Panama Canal

Gwen Pratesi

Transiting the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for many travelers, especially for history and engineering buffs. If you're considering this bucket-list sailing, you'll want to find the best time to cruise the Panama Canal, whether that be to find better weather, lower pricing or fewer crowds.

The Panama Canal cruise season peaks between October and April, outside of the rainy season that can start as early as mid-March and extend into the fall. With a tropical climate, this region is home to rainforests, incredible biodiversity, lush landscapes, abundant wildlife and beautiful beaches, but the weather can be wet at certain times of the year.

Panama Canal itineraries come in several flavors. One-way cruises sail between Florida and California, Washington or Canada; these complete a full transit of the canal. Partial-transit itineraries sail round-trip from Florida ports and only go through the locks on the Caribbean side. Some ships depart from or end in Panama or Costa Rica and feature itineraries that focus on the Pacific Coast of Central America or the Caribbean.

In addition to visiting Panama, many itineraries include ports of call in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia or Mexico, which can be the highlight of the trip, especially for outdoor enthusiasts.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It used to be that only smaller Panamax ships could squeeze through the locks of the Panama Canal. However, with the opening of a new set of locks in 2016, larger New-Panamax-sized ships can transit, as well. That means you take a Panama Canal cruise on a small-masted Windstar ship or luxury Silversea cruise or can sail on a megaship as large as the 1,094-foot-long and 136-foot-wide Norwegian Bliss.

Here, we look at Panama's peak cruise season month by month, so you can consider the weather, pricing and crowds to determine the best time to cruise through the Panama Canal.

Pros: October is one of the best months for cooler temperatures, lower fares and fewer crowds.

Cons: October is still the rainy season, and it's humid. It's also hurricane season in the Caribbean.

Ships: Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Oceania, Hurtigruten Expeditions, Lindblad and luxury lines Scenic and Silversea offer sailings during the month.

October is a rainy month, but it's also one of the coolest months of the year, with high temperatures in the low to mid-80s. The average year-round temperature in Panama is about 86 degrees, so it doesn't vary much during the year, but it's more humid in October with the wet weather. It's also possible to have hurricanes this time of year if you're cruising in the Caribbean.

For outdoor adventure seekers, it's too wet for hiking in the rainforests, but other activities benefit from the rainy season, including whitewater rafting. In Quepos, Costa Rica, Windstar Cruises offers rafting trips to the town of Santo Domingo, where you can take a float trip on the Savegre River. Experienced surfers can also check out the big swells on both coasts of the country.

If you have an extended stay in Panama City, consider a trip to the Archipelago de las Perlas (Pearl Islands) in southeastern Panama to view the humpback whales. It's a short flight to the islands, or you can travel by ferry to see the whales that are still in the waters around the archipelago after coming to breed in August and September. If traveling earlier in the month, you may also see nesting loggerheads and green turtles southeast of Panama City in Isla Canas (Cane Island) or Bocas del Toro.

Pros: November is one of the best months for lower cruise fares.

Cons: November is still the rainy season and the end of hurricane season. You can also expect some crowds in port with the national holidays.

Ships: Windstar, Star Clippers and Seabourn will also have vessels transiting the Panama Canal in November.

November can be rainy — and even the rainiest month of the wet season — with temperatures starting to warm closer to December. The month brings a mix of low-priced early-season fares but also several public holidays that bring crowds of both tourists and residents to attractions in places like Panama City and Boquete.

For a rainy-day excursion, ride the Panama Canal Railway, one of the world's great train rides. If you're in Panama City, plan an indoor excursion with a visit to the world's first museum dedicated to biodiversity, the Frank Gehry-designed Biomuseo.

You can celebrate Panama's Separation Day on Nov. 3 or Flag Day on Nov. 4. These holidays, along with a few others in November, feature parades, parties and other displays of national pride, so you can expect it to be busy in towns across the country.

Related: The best time to go on a cruise

Pros: December is the beginning of the dry season, so the weather will be drier and less humid.

Cons: The month is one of the busiest times for tourism, so you can expect to pay higher fares and have more crowds in port.

Ships: A few additional cruise lines offer Panama Canal crossings during December, including Celebrity, Carnival, Crystal and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

With drier weather and high temperatures hovering around 88 degrees, it's less humid in the region in December. However, it's the holiday season, so cruise fares and other costs, like hotels for pre- and post-cruise stays, will be more expensive if you travel this month. December is one of the peak tourism months in Panama, with Panamanians traveling for the holidays and visitors from North America and Europe escaping the cold weather at home.

December is the best month to plan excursions to places like Panama's rainforest and Chagres National Park to meet the indigenous Embrera people. You can also take an eco-cruise on Gatun Lake, which concludes with a visit to the Agua Clara Locks Visitor Center, where you'll learn about this engineering feat that connects two oceans. If you're comfortable exploring on your own, rent a car or hire a local guide to visit places like Soberania National Park.

best time to visit panama

Pros: January is regarded as one of the best months to visit Panama with the drier weather and high temperatures around the mid-80s. It's also less bustling with tourists than it is in December.

Cons: It's peak season on land and at sea, so hotel and cruise prices are high. Panama City will also be busy with the jazz festival mid-month.

Ships: Cunard, Azamara, Emerald Cruises and Tauck Tours (with a chartered Ponant yacht) enter the market in January.

January's dry weather makes the month the perfect time to explore Central America's national parks, jungles and tropical rainforests, including Costa Rica's Manuel Antonio National Park and Curú Wildlife Refuge and Panama's Darien National Park. During your visit, be sure to look for monkeys, sloths, iguanas, blue-footed boobies, capybaras, crocodiles and even manatees on a jungle boat tour along the canal and into Gatun Lake.

If you're a jazz buff, the Panama Jazz Festival is held in Panama City in mid-January, January 16-21. The six-day event features hundreds of renowned jazz musicians from around the world with live performances, a gala evening and concerts. If you're embarking in Colon, Panama, you can fly into Panama City a few days early for the festivities. The distance between the two cities is less than 50 miles. Alternatively, linger in Panama after your cruise to attend the festival, or look for sailings with full-day stops in Panama City during the jazz festival.

Related: When is the best time to book a cruise?

Pros: February is the second-best month to cruise the Panama Canal, with optimal weather during the dry season.

Cons: It's still peak season with higher cruise fares and prices ashore — but there are fewer cruise lines in the region. Snowbirds are still avoiding the cold weather and snowstorms at home, so you can expect many tourists, especially in Panama City. Carnival typically occurs across the country in February, depending on when Easter falls that year, bringing crowds.

Ships: Ponant is the only new addition in the region, offering one sailing early in the month. The other cruise lines sailing the Panama Canal in February are Holland America, Oceania, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Carnival, Lindblad, Tauck, Emerald and Windstar.

Take advantage of the final weeks of the dry season to book active outdoor adventure excursions like hiking, kayaking and zip lining. Another option is the Rainforest and Aerial Tram tour to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort in the 55,000-acre Soberania National Park. The tram climbs 280 feet through the dense jungle vegetation to reach the tree canopy above. During the ride to the top, keep an eye out for local wildlife, including white-faced capuchin and howler monkeys, sloths, butterflies, iguanas, toucans and frogs.

Carnival is a festival in mid-January in Panama City and other towns around the country. It's one of the biggest celebrations in Central America — even bigger than the Christmas holidays for most families, so you can expect crowds during that time.

best time to visit panama

Pros: March is the last month of the dry season, although the rains can start by midmonth during some years. You can expect pleasant weather, although it's quite warm, with temperatures reaching as high as the low 90s. You can also find late-season low fares on some of the larger ships.

Cons: It's still one of the busiest months for travel with the moderate weather.

Ships: New luxury line Explora Journeys joins the vessels in the region in March with an extended sailing that includes transiting the Panama Canal.

With the warmer temperatures, March is an ideal month to head to the beaches on one of the San Blas Islands, an archipelago of about 365 islands and cays off the Caribbean coast of Eastern Panama. Some cruise lines that visit the archipelago are Windstar, Star Clippers, Hapag-Lloyd and Ponant.

You can also look for excursions through the cruise line — or make independent arrangements — to go on an adventurous hike under the canopy of the rainforest, take a boat tour to explore the diverse flora and fauna along the canal or go windsurfing or sailboarding on Costa Rica's Lake Arenal with the Arenal Volcano as the backdrop. March is also the last month for surfing enthusiasts to hit the big waves on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

Should Semana Santa (Holy Week, from Palm Sunday through Holy Saturday) fall in March, there will be more crowds nationwide in Panama with religious processions and reenactments, parades and other special events. Many venues and attractions may be closed on some days during the festivities.

Pros: April is one of the best months to look for lower late-season fares on the larger ships.

Cons: The weather may not be ideal. The high temperatures in Panama hit just below 90 degrees on most days of the month. Mid-April is also when the wet season typically begins, so you can expect high humidity and rain. It's also still a busy time with tourists, so the prices are high ashore. If Easter falls in April, you may have to contend with the crowds celebrating Holy Week during the festivities.

Ships: If you're interested in a sailing on a luxury cruise ship, Silversea is the only luxury line still in the region in April. For a cruise on a large ship, choose among itineraries on Norwegian, Holland America, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Princess.

With the high temperatures and humidity — and the threat of rain — you might want to take tours where you can easily escape from the heat and the showers. If you're in Panama City, visit the vibrant neighborhood of Casco Antiguo in the city's historic district.

Dating back to 1673, the UNESCO World Heritage Site features landmarks like the Panama National Theater and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary. You'll also find some of the city's best restaurants, beautiful squares and plazas and top-rated museums. If you've booked a pre- or post-cruise hotel in town, be sure to catch a sunset from one of the city's many rooftop bars.

Bottom line: The best time to cruise the Panama Canal

When to cruise the Panama Canal will depend on what's most important to you.

If having the best weather is your top priority, January, February and early March offer the best weather during the dry season with low humidity — but it's also the most expensive time to travel to the region. You can expect crowds, especially with the festivals during that time.

If you want the best pricing and fewer crowds, October and November are the rainy season, so the pricing will be lower — and you'll avoid the holiday crowds and high fares in December.

Late March and April also offer lower fares as it's the beginning of the rainy season, but you can expect crowds during the Holy Week festivities in the country.

There’s so much more to Panama  than its world-famous waterway.

Yes, its canal is a whopper – and something you won't want to miss – but this Central American country offers lots more besides. With myriad  islands , wildlife-rich tropical forests and miles of pristine coastline on two oceans, it'll keep you under its spell for weeks.

Squeezed between Costa Rica and Colombia, this narrow land bridge and biological corridor may be compact, but it packs a lot in.

From a cosmopolitan capital filled with state-of-the-art skyscrapers to the splendid isolation of the  Guna Yala Archipelago , there’s a good chance you’ll want to extend your trip here. Especially once you hear about its adrenaline-fueled adventures in the highlands around  Boquete and the island hopping opportunities in  Bocas del Toro .

These are the best places to visit in Panama.

A woman walks along a street in front of a building in an old city

1. Panama City

Central America’s most stylish capital is a tale of three cities. Downtown is a skyscraper-packed hub of international finance, glitzy shopping malls and upscale restaurants. Across the bay, tombstone-like ruins are all that’s left of the original city,  Panama Viejo , which was sacked by pirates in 1671.

Next comes  Casco Viejo , which, after an ambitious restoration, has become the city’s hippest neighborhood. Boutique spots like the  American Trade Hotel and stylish rooftop restaurants and bars such as  Casa Casco fill the pastel-colored colonial mansions that line its cobblestone streets.

Planning tip:  To escape the urban jungle, hike the trails of the  Parque Natural Metropolitano , or cycle along the scenic Amador Causeway, where the striking Frank Gehry-designed  BioMuseo celebrates the natural and cultural history of the isthmus.

2. Panama Canal

The world’s most famous shortcut, the  Panama Canal – dubbed “the big ditch” – has been a vital trade route between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans since it opened in 1914. An awe-inspiring feat of engineering, this artificial marvel operates around the clock and moves more than half a billion tons of goods a year.

Planning tip:  The easiest place to watch the canal’s mechanics in action is from the viewing platforms at the four-story  Miraflores Visitor Center – try to time your visit with the arrival of a mega-ship, and don’t miss the 3D movie. You can get even closer to the locks on a partial (six to seven hours) or full (10 to 12 hours) canal transit with  Ancon Expeditions .

A solo figure stands at the top of a volcano as the sun rises

Adrenaline junkies should head to the highland town of Boquete , where adventurers have their pick of rappelling, rock climbing and rafting. From the foothills of Volcán Barú, you can hike up to the summit for a show-stopping sunrise, or whizz above the slopes on a zip line.

Hiking along its misty cloud forest trails in search of hidden waterfalls and elusive quetzals, shrouded in greenery and serenaded by birdsong, is a must.

After sweltering in Panama City, Boquete is – quite literally – a breath of fresh air, where shade-grown coffee plantations stretch to the horizon in an undulating patchwork of greens. Sample Panama Geisha, one of the world’s most expensive cups of joe, then feast on farm-to-table fusion fare at Italian-run  Retrogusto .

4. Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro have something for everyone. Simultaneously a backpacker party hub, couples’ chilled-out Caribbean paradise, and expat enclave, the three main islands and scores of uninhabited islets also boast some of Panama's finest beaches .

Bocas Town on  Isla Colón is party central. Everything from hostels to handicraft stores is housed in brightly painted, charming clapboard buildings.

Go starfish spotting at Playa Estrella, where the calm waters are perfect for snorkeling. Then kick back over killer cocktails and just-caught fish at over-the-water  El Último Refugio .

Planning tip:  For jungle-backed beaches, coral-fringed cays and magical surf breaks at  Wizard Beach , island hop to  Isla Bastimentos . Home to a namesake  marine park , this important conservation area contains mangroves, monkeys, crocodiles and caimans, among other wild things, with superb snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities to match.

5. Comarca de Guna Yala (San Blas Islands)

Indulge your inner Robinson Crusoe on this string of jewel-like tropical islands off Panama’s Caribbean coast – all swaying palms, icing-sugar-soft white sand and azure water.

The  San Blas archipelago has an island for every day of the year (plus a few to spare). This semi-autonomous region is home to the Indigenous Guna people, who fiercely protect their culture and customs – including molas , the hand-embroidered textiles designed and sewn by Guna women.

With their no-frills cane-and-palm-thatch cabañas, the island lodges are all owned and run by families from the more densely populated village-islands, such as Playón Chico.

Planning tip: The San Blas Islands offer the chance to disconnect from the world – we're talking no internet, no TVs and no telephones – so be prepared to take a step away from your tech for the duration of your visit. Instead, idle your time away, sunning, swimming, snorkeling and stargazing.

6. Santa Catalina

A fishing village turned surfer haunt,  Santa Catalina in the Gulf of Chiriquí has some of the best year-round breaks in Central America – no wetsuit required.

Laid-back fishers sell the day's catch from the shade of a mango tree: expect sushi with a tropical twist. And if you aren’t there to surf, this is the jumping-off point for  Parque Nacional Coiba .

Planning tip:  Visit this former penal colony, dubbed "Panama’s Galápagos", at the right time of year  and you can swim alongside the gentle giants of the sea: whale sharks (December to April) and humpback whales (August to November), along with whitetip reef sharks, rays, hawksbill turtles and shoals of technicolor fish. To access the park, you’ll need to book a tour in town.

Old Spanish cannon at the fortress ruin of Santiago with a view over the Caribbean Sea in Portobelo near Colon, Panama, Central America.

7. Portobelo

Strolling around the unhurried streets of  Portobelo , it’s hard to believe this was once one of the most important ports in the Caribbean, where treasure plundered from the Incas was shipped back to Spain.

The ruins of often-sacked fortresses remain, with Fuerte San Jerónimo  the most popular. The stone  Customs House , once piled high with Peruvian gold, stands out among the clapboard houses.

Portobelo’s African roots stretch to the Congo and spaces like  Casa de la Cultura Congo help keep traditional art and music alive.

Planning tip:  Visit during the two spirited (and spiritual) festivals that celebrate the vibrant local culture: the colorful and rhythmic biannual  Festival de Diablos y Congos ; and October’s Festival del Cristo Negro, when the Black Christ – a life-size wooden statue steeped in myth and legend – is removed from  Iglesia San Felipe  and paraded around town.

8. Península de Azuero

Farming, folklore and fiestas are the lifeblood of the  Azuero Peninsula , the country’s cultural heartland, bordered by the Gulf of Chiriquí to the west and the Gulf of Panamá to the east.

Las Tablas puts on the country’s largest and loudest Carnaval celebration: expect flamboyant costumes, exuberant music and energetic dancing.

Further south, the streets of Pedasí are lined with well-preserved colonial buildings. Playa Venao, a golden sweep of sand with world-class surf, is another 34km (21 miles) south.

And for wildlife spotting, the reserves of  Isla Iguana and  Isla Cañas – one of the few places on the planet where olive ridley sea turtles go to nest in large numbers – are just short boat hops away.
