What to Do in St. Thomas While on a Cruise

If you’re going on a Caribbean Cruise, and visiting beautiful St. Thomas, U.S.V.I., you’re in luck! St. Thomas is an amazing Caribbean cruise port and a long time favorite of many cruisers!

There are so many fabulous things to do in St. Thomas, from dreamy white sand beaches, interesting sightseeing tours, snorkeling excursions, duty-free shopping opportunities, and more. Perfect for kids and families, as well as adults and couples, St. Thomas has a lot to offer!

One of the US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas is an Eastern Caribbean port of call, as is often included as part of many Southern Caribbean cruises as well. When you arrive by cruise ship, you’ll be docking near the town of Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas.

Arrival in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas – The Harbor

Have your camera ready as you sail into St. Thomas harbor. The view and landscape is picture perfect! You may even want to head up to the top deck of your cruise ship and take some amazing photos before heading ashore.

Depending on your cruise ship, ou’ll either dock in Havensight or Crown Bay. Havensight is the older and more established cruise port of the two, and it’s a bit easier to maneuver and get around in St. Thomas from here.

That said, both Havensight and Crown Bay have shopping close by, restaurants and bars, and transportation to the best attractions in St. Thomas.

If you’re looking for things to do close to the cruise port, you can find a few, even some within walking distance (from Havensight in particular).

However, most activities will require either a shore excursion or tour , or transportation to a local beach or attraction. As you exit from the cruise port, you’ll see that cabs, shuttles and tours sold through local vendors, are plentiful.

As in any port of call, always be mindful of the all aboard time and make sure to return to your cruise ship with ample time. A word of caution, cruise ships will not wait for late passengers unless you’re on a ship sponsored excursion.

If you’re wondering about the pros and cons of booking shore excursions with the cruise line versus on your own, I’ll leave a link to a helpful article at the end of this post.

Top Attractions, Activities and Excursions in St. Thomas

If you’re only in St. Thomas for a day, it might be hard to choose what to do. While St. Thomas is known for it’s stunning beaches and snorkeling, you can also find interesting sight-seeing tours full of culture and history, shopping and even some adventurous activities that will keep you busy as well.

Personally, we don’t like to over saturate our port days and get too busy. So we remind ourselves that when we enjoy a cruise port, we’ll make plans to take another cruise and return!

Here’s a list of the very best things to do in St. Thomas while on a cruise

Things to do in charlotte amalie, capital of st. thomas, 1. charlotte amalie.

The bustling town of Charlotte Amalie is a main attraction in St. Thomas and is a 15 minute cab ride away from both cruise ports.

If you like, you can actually walk into town from Havensight. Although it’s only about a 30 minute walk, the weather in St. Thomas is usually hot and sunny, so a cab or open air shuttle may be more comfortable.

If you enjoy an easy day of visiting on your own, you can create your historic own “walking tour”, do some duty-free shopping, and stop in at a local bar or restaurant to soak in a bit of the St. Thomas island life.

3. Duty-free Shopping

St. Thomas is known for it’s duty free shopping deals, especially for gold jewelry and gemstones and quality tablecloths and linens. You’ll also find lots of items that make great souvenirs.

In Charlotte Amalie, you’ll find hundreds of brand name and local shops along Main Street and the cross streets. You’ll also find a local straw or flea market with some handmade jewelry, t-shirts and other souvenirs.

Downtown Charlotte Amalie National Heritage Sites

In the Historic district of Charlotte Amalie, there are several building and sights history buffs will enjoy.

4. Blackbeard’s Castle

Blackbeard’s Castle, a historic site, is named for the famous pirate Edward Thatch (they called him Blackbeard because of his… you guessed it – black beard. The castle is really a watchtower, which overlooks Charlotte Amalie and boasts breathtaking views.

5. Fort Christian

Built in the late 1600’s, Fort Christian is the oldest standing structure in St. Thomas. While this fort was built by King Christian V to protect Danish settlers on the island of St. Thomas, over time it’s been used as administrative offices, a church and even a prison. It is now a museum, housing artifacts

6. St. Thomas Synagogue

The St. Thomas Synagogue is full of history and a must see for those of all faiths. In the heart of Charlotte Amalie, you’ll find the synagogue located just two block up from Main Street.

Inside the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas, you’ll get a brief history of the synagogue, the Jewish history of the island, and the significance of it’s sand floor.

Although guided tours are available, this is an active synagogue and working congregation.

7. 99 Steps

Another tourist attraction located in Charlotte Amalie, closeby to the synagogue, is 99 Steps. Although 99 Steps is the most famous and most photographed, there are many of these “step” streets which cut through the hills in St. Thomas.

These step streets were originally built from ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the Old World.

Funnily enough, there are actually 103 steps in this historic St. Thomas landmark.

Best Beaches in St. Thomas

St. Thomas’ white sand beaches are gorgeous and each one has a special character. Depending on what you enjoy most, you’ll likely have a preference.

8. Magens Bay Beach

Magen's Bay Beach view

Without a doubt, Magens Bay is the most famous as well as most popular beach in St. Thomas for cruise passengers. For many years, it was on several top ten lists of most beautiful beaches in the world.

Magens Bay Beach is a horseshoe shaped beach with pristine, crystal clear and calm waters. The colors of the blues and turquoise waters set against the lush mountains where it nestles, is picture perfect!

Magens Bay has good facilities. You can rent chairs and loungers, and there’s a nice beach bar and restaurant on site.

It does get crowded, but if you’d like to find a quieter spot to sit, head to either end of the beach and you’ll be fine.

9. Sapphire Beach

Sapphire Beach is known for it’s stunning sapphire blue waters of course! However, you’ll also get a beautiful view of the neighboring island of St. John.

Sapphire Beach is located on the Eastern end of St. Thomas, and has a lot to offer those who enjoy an active beach day. Not only is the snorkeling pretty good, but there’s also jet skiing, parasailing and other activities available.

10. Coki Beach

Coki beach is another popular beach for cruisers. It’s located on the Northern coast of the island and most enjoyed for it’s snorkeling and diving.

Coki Beach is a bit smaller than Magens Bay, but does also have facilities, and is very pretty.

Coral World Ocean Park is located here, so this can make a great full day to combine a beach and aquarium visit.

11. Lindquist Beach

The quietest of the beaches, Lindquist Beach is known to cruise passengers who prefer to avoid the crowds. Located on the Eastern side of the island, this secluded beach has shallow and calm waters and a breathtaking view of the island of St. John.

While it has basic facilities, such as washrooms and picnic benches, other amenities are limited. You’ll need to bring any food or drinks with you, if you decide to head to Lindquist Beach.

Neighboring Islands of St. Thomas

St. John Trunk Bay Beach

12. Trunk Bay, St. John

One of the excursions that comes most recommended, is a visit to the neighboring island of St. John. In contrast to bustling St. Thomas, St. John is a much less busy and not commercialized as most of the island is part of the US Virgin Islands National Park.

The most popular beach for cruisers and those who want to snorkel, is Trunk Bay. Perfect for families and kids, this beach has an underwater snorkeling trail that’s accessible from the beach and close to the shoreline.

The island of St John is accessible by ferry and you can go your own, or book an excursion with your cruise line. If you do take the ferry on your own, do make sure to pay close attention to the ferry schedule so that you get back to the cruise ship on time (and avoid being a pier runner/missing the ship )

13. Honeymoon Beach / Water Island

One of the quieter beaches you can enjoy is Honeymoon Beach on Water Island. It’s a small and simple beach, but the water is beautiful and clear. There’s a cute little hot dog and burger restaurant, where you can grab a bite to eat in paradise.

To get to Honeymoon Beach, you can either take a ferry to Water Island, or you can go with a cruise line excursion. During a past cruise we did a snorkeling excursion which included a stop at this beach, and we enjoyed it.

14. Skyride to Paradise Point

Just a few minutes walk from the Havensight cruise port, you’ll find the Sky Ride to Paradise Point. Head up 700 feet to the top of the mountain by tram and experience incredible views of St. Thomas and the harbor.

This has been a favorite shore excursion for many cruisers over the years for taking Instaworthy photos of the stunning harbor. Plus, there’s a gift shop, restaurant and bar where you may want to stop for a famous Bailey’s Bushwacker.

You can easily visit in about an hour or two, and still have time for an afternoon excursion if you like.

16. Catamaran Snorkeling Excursions

St. Thomas has beautiful crystal clear water and underwater sea life, which makes snorkeling excursions quite popular. Some snorkeling excursions include at stop at one of St. Thomas’ beautiful beaches.

17. Turtle Cove to Buck Island Snorkeling Excursion

If you’ve dreamed of swimming with turtles (me!), consider this St. Thomas snorkeling excursion. We actually booked this one in the past and enjoyed it.

I will say, we didn’t see as many turtles as we hoped, but we still had a great time and it was a cool experience.

18. Sunset Sail

If your cruise ship is docked until late at night, consider the ultimate romantic excursion, a sunset catamaran sail.

Cruise Tip: If you’re doing an evening activity, consider booking your shore excursion with the cruise line for peace of mind. The cruise ship won’t wait for you if you’re late and are not with a cruise line sponsored tour.

19. Coral World Ocean Park

Located at Coki Beach, the Coral World Ocean Park is one of St. Thomas’ most popular attractions for families. This aquarium offers many opportunities to interact and learn about a variety of marine life, including sea lions, dolphins, and sea turtles.

1.1. Getting Around Havensight Cruise Terminal

  • The port area is flat and suitable for people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users.
  • Havensight Mall consists of dozens of shops housed in one-story buildings and some of the brands you’ll find are Diamonds International, Colombian Emeralds, Little Switzerland, Pandora, Effy, Boolchand’s (electronics), Harley Davidson, and numerous clothing and souvenir stores. There are also a variety of bars and restaurants offering international and Caribbean cuisine, such as Cravin’ Crabs, Wendy’s, The Smoking Rooster, Barefoot Buddha, Beni Iguana’s Sushi Bar & Restaurant, China King, Subway, Dog House Pub, Pizza Amore, Great Wall (Chinese restaurant), and many others.
  • The bus parking and a large taxi rank are available right outside the cruise terminal gates. This is where you normally meet your tour guides for your shore excursions (however, make sure you double-check your meeting time and location indicated on your tour ticket).
  • Upon exiting the ship, in the northern part of the Havensight dock, you will spot Yacht Haven Grande , a beautiful marina filled with luxury yachts and recreational boats. This is where you will find some high-end stores including the renowned Louis Vuitton. Here, you will also find several upscale cocktail bars and restaurants, as well as tour operator booths offering tours and car rentals. Yacht Haven Grande is located only a 10-15 minute walk from Havensight cruise terminal.
  • To get to Charlotte Amalie downtown , you can take an easy 20-25-minute walk through the Yacht Haven Grande Marina, passing by Bluebeard’s Castle, one of the historic landmarks of the city. The alternative is to take a taxi that you can easily find at a designated taxi station right by the exit gates of the port.
  • The majority of taxis in St Thomas are open-air taxis and shared (minivan style), so prices are per person. Rates are regulated so there is no chance to bargain. From the Havensight pier to Charlotte Amalie downtown, a taxi rate is approximately $5 per person each way. There are also wheelchair-accessible taxis in St. Thomas, however, they are very limited.
  • As for public transport , it is available but not very reliable, so it’s not recommended to use it especially due to the limited time in port.
  • Some of the attractions near the Havensight cruise terminal are Skyride to Paradise Point (the view in the picture above), and Pirates Treasure Museum .

IMPORTANT INFO : Cruise ship passengers in St. Thomas are required to have both the ship card and a valid photo ID to re-enter the pier. There might be delays in getting off the ship/tour departures as St Thomas is a U.S. cruise port, and the immigration process takes place upon coming to the port.

2. Crown Bay Marina Cruise Terminal

Inaugurated in 2007, Crown Bay Marina is the newest pier located in the western part of Charlotte Amalie’s Bay (on the opposite side of Havensight cruise terminal), approximately 2.6 km/1.6 miles from downtown. Crown Bay Pier consists of 2 berths and offers a variety of amenities.

Right by the exit of the security gates, there is a Crown Bay Center shopping mall where you can find a tourist information desk, ATMs, restrooms, duty-free shops, souvenir stores, tour operator booths, bars, restaurants, and free wi-fi (close to the bank).

Some of the brands that you will find include Diamonds International, Cariloha, Del Sol, Effy, Cardow, Little Switzerland, Milano Diamond Gallery, Royal Caribbean Shop, and a few others. The shore excursion meeting place is usually here, in front of the terminal gates, however, always double-check the information on your tour ticket.

St Thomas cruise terminal - Crown Bay cruise terminal

To get to Charlotte Amalie downtown , you can walk which I wouldn’t recommend, as it’s too long and not very scenic (30-40 minutes walking distance). The best way to get into the town is by taxi . A taxi rank is outside the pier, the rates are displayed and taxis are shared; it costs around $5 per person one way to go to the city center.

There are no attractions close to the Crown Bay cruise terminal, however, you can take a taxi to some of the nearby beaches. The most popular and beautiful ones are Lindberg Bay Beach (a 20-minute walk, or less than a 5-minute drive), and Brewers Bay Beach (a 5-minute drive or 40-minute walk).

Getting Around St Thomas Port – Useful Info

  • The official currency in St. Thomas is the U.S. dollar (USD), as the island is a U.S. territory. Credit cards are accepted in the majority of shops and restaurants. ATMs and banks are available in town.
  • St Thomas is a duty-free shopping paradise. You’ll find hundreds of duty-free shops in Charlotte Amalie and Havensight cruise terminal.
  • The peak tourist season in Saint Thomas lasts from December to April, so you may expect crowds during this period. The weather in St Thomas is warm all year round, with breezy nights and very little rainfall during the high season. The rainiest months are August, September, October and November, and this is when tropical storms/hurricanes may occur.
  • Cyril E. King Airport is St Thomas’ International Airport and is located 7 km/4.5 miles (a 15-minute drive) west of Havensight Cruise Pier and less than 2.5 km/1.5 miles (a 5-minute drive) west of Crown Bay Marina.

Start your day learning about the history of the largest capital city in the United States Virgin Islands. Founded in 1666 as Thapus, the city was renamed in 1691 as Charlotte Amalie in honor of the Danish Queen. Stroll through the narrow cobblestone alleys and admire the beautiful Danish colonial architecture.

The main city attractions are located within a short walking distance, so you can visit the majority of them in a few hours. Below is the list of Charlotte Amalie’s highlights:

  • St Thomas Synagogue – The second oldest synagogue operating in the Western Hemisphere, offering guided tours and known for its floor covered by sand.
  • Fort Christian – A remarkable Dano-Norwegian fortification originally dating from the 1600s. Built for defense purposes, it is the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands and overlooks the harbor.
  • Blackbeard’s Castle and 99 steps – The 17th-century Blackbeard’s Castle is a circular hilltop watchtower located in the heart of the city’s historic district. The castle features a 14-foot-tall Blackbeard statue and its lookout point offers stunning views of the capital and its bay. The easiest way to get to the castle is to take a taxi downtown and then walk around 5 minutes to get to the bottom of the 99 steps , a long, brick staircase surrounded by lush nature and colorful flowers. The staircase will lead you to the castle.
  • Emancipation Garden – A beautiful park and a small plaza with a pavilion, built to commemorate the abolition of slavery.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial Park – At a stone’s throw from Emancipation Garden, this memorial park is a shaded relaxing area featuring a playground for kids, an ideal place for families and those in search of a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city.
  • Three Queens Statue – Built in 2005, the beautiful statue was erected to commemorate the three ladies who led the Fireburn Revolt against the Danish Government to improve the working and living conditions of plantation workers after slavery was abolished.

Magens Bay is an ideal beach for swimming and is most recommended when traveling with kids because of its calm waters. Snorkeling is also possible, however, the marine life right there is not the best due to the beach’s sandy bottom.

5. St John Island

If you are familiar with St. Thomas, I suggest taking a scenic ferry ride over to St. John, the smallest of the three Virgin Islands located four miles east of St. Thomas. The island boasts incredible nature and a large part of it is covered by a nature reserve.

St John is known as a great snorkeling and diving spot and has breathtaking beaches, among which Trunk Bay and Honeymoon Beach are the most popular ones.

You can take an open-air taxi and tour around the Virgin Islands National Park’s coastal swamplands and sugar plantation ruins, or relax and snorkel at one of the beautiful beaches.

The capital Cruz Bay offers visitors a wide range of restaurants, bars, and locally handmade items, so you can take a break at one of the charming cafes overlooking the picturesque harbour.

Nestled in the north of St John, Trunk Bay Beach is the most popular beach listed as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Trunk Bay and its beach are known for incredible hiking and snorkeling opportunities as two-thirds of the island is part of the Virgin Islands National Park.

Those who seek peace and silence of nature can relax, swim or sunbathe at the beach, but those in search of an active holiday are welcome to discover tropical fish and colorful corals on the Underwater Snorkeling Trail , offering ideal snorkeling for first-timers, kids, and adults!

This 225-yard-long trail lies just 30 yards off the beach and allows visitors to enjoy an up-close encounter with St John’s vibrant marine life featuring corals, parrotfish, yellowtails, and turtles. Underwater signs give you an insight into the abundant sea life, which makes the whole experience unique and educational.

There is a small entrance fee to Trunk Bay. Beach chairs, umbrellas, and snorkeling gear are available for rental, and other amenities include showers, restrooms, and places to buy food and drinks.

The beach boasts powdery sands and crystal clear turquoise waters and offers great snorkeling with sea turtles and other incredible marine life.

Honeymoon Beach in St John (St Thomas, US Virgin Islands)

To get to the beach on your own, you need to take a golf cart for a small cost. Many tours include Honeymoon Beach, and the best way to reach it is by boat as you get to take in the stunning views of St John’s coastline.

The umbrellas and chairs are available for rental, as well as food and drinks that you can purchase on the beach. The prices are not the cheapest ones, but the place itself is beautiful and well worth the trip.

If you seek a more secluded beach, Solomon Beach located next to Honeymoon Beach might be just a perfect pick for you! It is accessible via hiking trails, has no amenities, and offers amazing swimming and snorkeling.

9. Buck Island

Embark on a sailing adventure to Buck Island, the National Wildlife Refuge located only 2 miles south of St Thomas. This little island is known for its rugged coastline, colorful coral reefs, and an old, hilltop lighthouse offering breathtaking ocean views.

Turtle Cove is the most popular spot on the island, as it’s home to Green Sea Turtles that you can often spot swimming in the blue azure, crystal clear waters. Besides the turtles, you can snorkel/scuba dive around a fascinating coral reef teeming with abundant marine life including surgeonfish, squirrelfish, snapper, and other tropical sea creatures.

Another popular snorkeling and scuba diving location is a wartime-era shipwreck, lying at a depth of around 40 ft (12 meters). Buck Island is a blast and easily accessible by catamaran, speedboat, or sailboat on a guided tour.

Note : There are two Buck Islands; the little one I mentioned lies a couple of miles south of St Thomas, whereas the other Buck Island is a protected area and part of the Reef National Monument, located 1.5 miles north of St Croix Island (U.S. Virgin Islands).

You can swim, relax, snorkel, or walk along the rustic lagoon and admire the ecological preservation of marine life and birds. There is natural shade but umbrellas, chairs, and other amenities are available for rental. It has a nice waterfront beach bar and restaurant.

13. Lindberg Bay Beach

Located a stone’s throw from Charlotte Amalie, this is the closest beach if your ship docks at Crown Bay Marina cruise terminal. Lindberg Beach is a great beach for swimming offering a front beach bar, restaurants, and water activities for rental, however, don’t expect snorkeling to be good here. There is also a small playground for families traveling with kids.

Lindbergh Beach can be accessed by a short taxi ride from the port or about a 20-minute walk from Crown Bay Marina. I’ve been to this beach a couple of times and I absolutely loved it!

If you are looking for unforgettable views and sceneries, hop aboard a tram that will take you to Paradise Point, rising 700 ft above the town of Charlotte Amalie. The trams can accommodate 8-12 people each, and the ride takes 5 minutes one-way.

St Thomas Island USVI cruise port

Port St Thomas Island USVI cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from St Thomas Island USVI, Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Saint Thomas is one of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) in the Caribbean. Together with Saint John and Water Island, it forms a county and district of the USVI (unincorporated USA territory). St Thomas island's population is around 52,000, or about 49% of USVI's total.

On the island is Charlotte Amalie - the USVI's capital city and principal port (locode VISTT).

On September 20, 2023, USVI Port Authority's Board of Governors approved the CCRC/Capital Cost Recovery Charge of (US$5 per cruise passenger (implemented on January 1, 2024) to improve local port facilities. The fee is only for Royal Caribbean Group/RCG-owned ships from RCG's subsidiaries RCI-Royal Caribbean International , Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises . The CCRC is for all RCG passengers whose ships dock at USVI's main cruise ports - Charlotte Amalie (Austin Monsanto Marine Terminal) and Frederiksted/St Croix Island (at Ann E. Abramson Marine Terminal).

The USVI is the only place under USA jurisdiction where the road rule is to drive on the left. It was inherited from what was then-current Danish practice at the time of American acquisition in 1917. Because Saint Thomas is a United States territory, most cars are imported from the mainland USA and therefore the steering column is placed on the left side of the vehicles.

St Thomas has many regular taxis and open-air, covered trucks named "safaris" with bench seats which usually operate only between high-traffic points: cruise-ship terminals at Crown Bay and Havensight and downtown Charlotte Amalie. However, most cruise ships to St Thomas USVI dock at Port Charlotte Amalie.

All USVI beaches (including on St Thomas) are public and free of charge (no entry fees required). The most popular among tourists are Lindquist Beach and Emerald Beach.

All Inclusive St John Beach and Snorkelling (Royal Caribbean) is an optional shore excursion to Trunk Bay beach (white sand), featuring guided boat tour to Trunk Bay and a snorkel trail.

Sailing to Christmas and Honeymoon Coves (Royal Caribbean) is an optional sailing boat tour for snorkeling. The boat is first anchored offshore (at Christmas Cove), then Sails to Water Island (Honeymoon Beach) for swimming and sunbathing. Snorkeling is also available. The experience also includes freshly-made beach BBQ served on the boat.

5 Star Island Tour (Royal Caribbean) is an optional driving tour, which stops at St Peter Mountain's top (shopping), Magen's Bay Beach (2-hour stay for beach activities) and downtown Charlotte Amalie (2-hour stay for shopping).

Charlotte Amalie – St. Thomas

Last updated on September 18th, 2023 at 09:15 pm

Welcome to Charlotte Amalie, the bustling capital of St. Thomas. Explore the vibrant streets lined with colonial architecture, indulge in duty-free shopping, or visit the iconic Blackbeard's Castle. Dive into the turquoise waters for snorkeling and swimming, and savor the flavors of Caribbean cuisine. This vibrant city offers a perfect blend of culture, adventure, and relaxation.

Once a haven for famous pirates such as the well-known Blackbeard, Charlotte Amalie is now one of the busiest ports of call in the Caribbean. It is known for its Danish architecture, a rich pirate-filled history and duty-free shopping opportunities.

Check out these excursions in St. Thomas !

English is the official language though much of the population also speaks a form of Virgin Islands Creole. A significant portion of the population also speak Spanish or French.

Where You Dock in Charlotte Amalie – St. Thomas

There are two St. Thomas cruise ports in Charlotte Amalie. The first is the Havensight Pier, also known as the West India Company Dock, where most ships will dock. The second is Crown Bay. There are more than 50 shops and restaurants located right at the pier, with other stores (including K-mart) located nearby.

Because Charlotte Amalie is such a busy port is it also possible that passengers will be tendered in to the Charlotte Amalie Harbor or to the Crown Point Marina.

Getting Around Charlotte Amalie – St. Thomas

Walking is possible from the Havensight Harbour to downtown but not recommended from Crown Bay. Taxis are readily available from both ports. Official taxis are regulated and can be confirmed by the word ‘taxi’ that is always part of their license plate. A fare schedule is available for anyone who asks as taxis are not metered but fees are calculated based on number of people and the destination. Be careful of taxis that don’t have the official license plates. It is a 5-10 minute taxi ride from the port to downtown Charlotte Amalie.

Car Rental companies are located within walking distance from the port in Havensight and is a great way to see the island at your own pace IF you are comfortable with left-side driving. If you are from the United States, your driver’s licence is valid for 90 days in St. Thomas. If you are from a country other than the U.S., you will need to purchase a temporary international driver’s permit.

There is an extensive bus system however it is rather complicated and if time is limited, it wouldn’t be recommended.

Shopping In Charlotte Amalie – St. Thomas

With its reputation for duty-free shopping opportunities, Charlotte Amalie won’t disappoint. In the downtown area alone there are over 100 jewellery stores filed with gemstones, precious metals and every form of glitz and bling imaginable.

Havensight Mall – Right next to the Havensight Pier is an extensive outdoor mall with shops that range from the expected jewellery stores to shops that sell electronics, clothing, beauty supplies and much much more. The mall provides a free shuttle from the dock to the mall for cruise ship passengers.

St Thomas Cruise Port Guide: 55+ Unforgettable Experiences

Posted on Last updated: February 12, 2024

Ahoy, cruise lovers! St. Thomas isn’t just another port on the Caribbean map; it’s a mesmerizing blend of turquoise waters, colonial heritage, and tropical wonders.

But what really sets St. Thomas apart? In this guide, we’re about to embark on a voyage to uncover the 55 best things to do in St Thomas cruise port.

St Thomas cruise port

History of St Thomas Cruise Port

If the sun-kissed beaches are the face of St. Thomas, its rich history forms the soul.

Delving deep into the annals of time, St. Thomas stands as a testament to a blend of civilizations, cultures, and epoch-making events that have shaped the Caribbean.

The Early Days and European Colonization

The indigenous Arawak and Carib tribes were the original settlers, cherishing the island’s bounty long before the European sails dotted the horizon.

In the early 17th century, the Danish recognized St. Thomas’s potential as a strategic port, establishing a settlement in 1666.

This gave birth to Charlotte Amalie, named in honor of the Danish queen and currently the capital of the US Virgin Islands.

Over time, this bustling port town played a central role in trade, especially during the pirate era, witnessing tales of swashbuckling adventures and treasures.

The Era of Trade and Piracy

With its natural deep-water harbor, St. Thomas became a pivotal trading and refueling spot for ships sailing the Caribbean waters. But with commerce came piracy.

Blackbeard and Bluebeard, two of the most infamous pirates of their time, are said to have used the island as their base. Legends of their escapades still echo in the winding alleys and historic forts.

Cultural Melting Pot

St. Thomas is not just about pirates and colonial powers. African, European, and indigenous influences melded over centuries, giving rise to a vibrant cultural tapestry.

The legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, emancipation, and the island’s eventual sale to the United States in 1917, have all left indelible imprints on its identity.

Fort Christian

Architectural Jewels

Amidst the natural beauty, man-made wonders stand tall.

Fort Christian, the oldest standing structure in the US Virgin Islands, has overseen the island’s evolution since the late 1600s.

Then there’s Blackbeard’s Castle, a watchtower that’s as much about panoramic views as it is about history.

In essence, St. Thomas isn’t just an island getaway; it’s a walk through time.

With every cobblestone, every ancient wall, and every local story, you’re transported to an era where the New World was still unfolding.

As we journey through the best activities and experiences this island offers, remember: the past isn’t behind us here. In St. Thomas, history is very much alive and part of the present.

St. Thomas Cruise Port

Making The Best Of Your Day: Key Tips For St. Thomas Cruise Port

The beautiful island of St. Thomas is the primary cruise port in the U.S. Virgin Islands and it is often featured on Eastern Caribbean itineraries. Ships that stop at the St. Thomas cruise port may disembark passengers at one of three different spots. The two main docs are the West Indian Company dock (most commonly referred to as Havensight) and the Crown Bay dock.  And, on particularly busy days, ships may anchor in the harbor and guests take a tender to shore.

This post may contain affiliate links that could result in payment of a commission to this website (at no additional cost to you). Visit our Disclosures Page for more information.

Larger ships such as the Oasis-class ships from Royal Caribbean must use the dock at Crown Bay. And, other Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships will often be scheduled to dock there as well. That said, depending on the number of ships expected in port on a particular day, your ship could be assigned to either port.

If you want a hint as to where your ship is scheduled to dock, you can check out this cruise ship schedule , but be mindful things can change at the last minute. Regardless of which port you dock at, you can easily reach the main part of town by a quick taxi.  (The larger shopping areas are within walking distance of the Havensight pier.)

Transportation

The primary means for getting around the island are walking and taxis.

Charlotte Amalie is not particularly large, and for those so inclined, very much of the town is quite walkable. Particularly, if your ship docks at Havensight. There are several fun things to do in St. Thomas that are right near the dock. For instance, the Pirate Treasure Museum, the Skyride, and the Havensight Mall, (all discussed below), are a few easy steps from Havensight dock.

You can also take a longish walk from Havensight to downtown Charlotte Amalie and take a self-guided walking tour of some of the main historical sights.

Note that taxi rides are relatively cheap, but they are charged on a per-person basis. Most taxis are enclosed vans or small open-air safari-style vehicles that can hold many people. Rates are flat fees based on destination. Depending on the size of your party, you may have a small wait as the driver fills up with additional passengers.

As for ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft, those aren’t available.

Rental Cars

Some cruise ship visitors choose to rent cars when they stop at the St. Thomas cruise port. You can find rental cars near the Havensight cruise dock, and for those who book in advance, it may be possible to have a rental car delivered to Crown Bay.

While driving on St. Thomas is a viable option, it’s not one for the faint of heart. First, folks drive on the left-hand side of the road. And many roads are steep with blind turns. Also, Signage and street markings can be less than ideal. You should also be aware that GPS is not very reliable in many areas of the island.

Beware Time Traps!

Please note that St. Thomas local time may often deviate from the “ship time” being used by your ship.  St. Thomas is in the Atlantic Time Zone — which is 1 hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time and 2 hours ahead of Central Standard Time. However, St. Thomas does not observe Daylight Savings Time.

Photo of cruise passengers disembarking at St. Thomas cruise port

Remember that when you’re getting off the ship for port calls , make sure that you have a timepiece that will track the ship’s time and not automatically reset to local time. Otherwise, you might be at risk of missing your ship when it departs.  Likewise, if you are booking independent reservations for shore excursions , you need to make sure to adjust between local time and ship time as necessary.  Tour operators always operate on local time.

Hurricane Damage

You should also be aware that St. Thomas sustained significant damage during the double Category 5 hurricanes in 2017 of Irma and Maria. While most of the island has substantially recovered, a few previous top attractions remain closed — such as Blackbeard’s Castle. ( Note: Blackbeard’s Castle remains closed as of March 2022. ) So make sure you are working with updated information as you make your plans.

Things To Do In St. Thomas Cruise Port: Activities & Excursions

When you’re looking for things to do in the Caribbean, one of the more obvious places to start is checking out the beach options . And this holds true for the St. Thomas cruise port.

On the island of St. Thomas, one of the more popular and family-friendly beaches you will find is Magens Bay.

As well as floaties, kayaks and other water toys. The beach is also accessible to several restaurants, bars, and shops.

Pirates Treasure Museum

St. Thomas has a long fabled history of hosting many a pirate over the years. And several of the notable things to do in St. Thomas revolve around pirates.  The Pirate Treasure Museum provides a great family-friendly and interactive opportunity to explore the island’s pirate history.

While you’re visiting the St. Thomas cruise port, dive into the world of pirates and deep-ocean exploration in a two-story museum showcasing authentic ocean artifacts, treasures, and dozens of interactive exhibits that educate visitors about pirate life in the Virgin Islands and the nitty-gritty of salvage expeditions.

At this museum, you can relive survivor accounts of storm-tossed seas and sinking ships. Explore items from real shipwrecks dating back to 1865 and earlier. Experience hurricane force winds in specially enclosed wind booth. Operate a real underwater salvage machine as you try to collect objects from simulated ocean sea bed. Steer an authentic ship’s wheel or cool your heels in the ship’s brig, and more. You can also swing by the gift shop to peruse the selection of souvenirs, shipwreck artifacts, art work, books, telescopes and gifts.

The museum sits across the street from the Havensight dock and it’s a short taxi ride from Crown Bay. Admission is $16 for adults and $12 for kids. When cruise ships are in town, the museum opens at 9:00 a.m. (local time).

Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden

You will often find this highly regarded botanical garden on a list of the best things to do in St. Thomas. It spans two acres of blooming orchids, bromeliads, lilies, palms, and more. It also hosts stunning views of Magens Bay, the island of St. John, and the cruise ship harbor. The garden provides a home to numerous lizards, birds, and butterflies. As well as parrots, tortoises, and peacocks. The garden has lots of seating areas including a Balinese gazebo where you can stop along for a leisurely walk and enjoy the views. The garden is open every day except Mondays.

Coral World Ocean Park

Coral World Ocean Park is an extremely popular attraction that has lots to offer but it’s not one of the cheaper things to do in St. Thomas. The base admission price covers quite a bit. General Admission runs $23.50 for adults and $13 for kids.

Explore five acres of exotic aquariums, outdoor pools, nature trails, and other marine life stations that feature dolphins, sharks, stingrays, and more. Visit the three-story Undersea Observatory where the lower level descends 15 feet underwater. You can view a natural coral reef teeming with fish and other marine life without getting wet.  There are also various talks and feedings throughout the property where you can learn more about the varied wildlife. There’s also a touch pool.

The exhibits included in the General Admission price are Dolphin Sea Sanctuary, Shark Shallows, Stingray Lagoon, Touch Pool, Caribbean Reef Encounter, Undersea Observatory Tower, Turtle Pool, and Critter Corner.

You can round out your day with some very fun and educational add-ons or “Experiences” for an additional fee. Some of the pricier e xperiences charge $182.50 for a 60-minute Sea Lion Swim or the Dolphin Splash & Swim. Other Experiences include the 45-minute Dolphin Moment ($119), 50-minute Sea Lion Encounter ($119), 45-Minute underwater Sea-Trek ($86), 75-minute SNUBA excursion ($85), and the 45-minute Shark Encounter ($64). And, new for 2022 cruisers: the 75-minute dolphin kayak ($69) and 75-minute dolphin trek ($129).

The Ocean Park is adjacent to Coki Beach (no entry fee), so you could easily combine some traditional beach time and water activities with a trip to the Park. You can also pre-arrange tour packages for Coral World Ocean Park that include Coki Beach.

Photo of Skyride to Paradise Point in St. Thomas

Skyride to Paradise Point

Another popular thing to do in St. Thomas is checking out the island’s stunning panoramic views. Paradise Point has spectacular views that are worth the trip up.

The Skyride up to the Point starts right across from the Havensight cruise ship dock. The Skyride is an elevated tram that soars (slowly) 700 feet above sea level. At the top, in addition to the views, you’ll find an open-air restaurant/bar area and souvenir shops. Tickets for the Skyride are $24.95 for adults, $16.95 for kids 12 and under, kids aged 5 and under are free.

Things To Do In St. Thomas: Side Trips

St. Thomas can also be a great jumping-off spot for other day trips in the region. You do, however, have to be cautious about time. If your cruise ship is only in port from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, then a visit to places like St. Croix, USVI would probably be unwise. The ferry ride takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes one way.

There are two other islands that are less than a ½ hour by ferry and both are still in the USVI.

Water Island

Did you know that there’s a fourth U.S. Virgin Island? As of 1996, there is — Water Island.

The island has a 2 ½ miles long coastline dotted with many sandy beaches, secluded coves, bays, and peninsulas. Wildlife such as iguanas, turtles, and birds populate the island. And, in addition to the beaches, it’s a great location for hiking and biking.  For those looking for more quiet things to do in a St. Thomas cruise stop, a trip to Water Island could be a great option for a peaceful day focused on sun and relaxation.

Water island has no resorts, taxis, traffic or stores of any kind. Less than 200 people live on the island. It’s like a quiet, mellow island suburb of St. Thomas. Visitors can access the island by taking a 10-minute ride on the Water Island Ferry that leaves from the Crown Bay Harbor.

Be sure to bring along whatever supplies you think you might need for the day – towels, water, snacks, etc. And expect largely self-directed activities.

St. John’s

The island of St. John rarely receives cruise ship stops, but it can be easily reached by those cruise ship visitors stopping at the St. Thomas cruise port. Either by ferry or by booking a tour. The most popular and well-known attraction on the island is the Virgin Islands National Park . It’s a mecca for nature lovers. It has numerous protected beaches with great opportunities for snorkeling, diving, sailing, or other water activities. You can also visit sugar plantation ruins and ancient Indian petroglyphs.

The National Park covers more than half of the island’s 12,500 acres. It features beautiful beaches and hiking. Check out 5 Tips for Visiting the Virgin Islands National Park with Children

Families may also enjoy Trunk Bay Beach – particularly the snorkel lovers. Trunk Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches on St. John. And, it has an underwater snorkel trail spanning 225 yards complete with underwater signs that mark the trail and provide information about nearby coral.

The family-friendly beach features lifeguards, a bathhouse, snacks, and souvenirs. This beach has a fee. Adults are $5.00. Kids 16 and under are free.

You can also reserve a variety of pre-arranged tour packages for St. John’s online that include transportation from St. Thomas.

Things To Do In St. Thomas: Shopping

The St. Thomas cruise port is well known for its duty-free shopping. But beware, just because something is duty-free doesn’t mean that it is necessarily a good deal. If you think that you may want to buy any significant items ( such as jewelry or electronics), check the prices at home before you leave, so that you have a basis for comparison. Also, it’s perfectly acceptable to bargain on prices – particularly on jewelry. (Be sure to check out our other tips on things to buy in St. Thomas !)

Havensight Mall

The Havensight Mall is a convenient location to hit many shops at once. As you can tell by the name, it’s right by the Havensight cruise ship dock. The Havensight shopping area also includes Buccaneer Mall and Port of Sale. In this area, you’ll find more than 60 stores including major retailers.

Things To Do In St. Thomas: Local Events

Another way to fill out your day when stopping at the St. Thomas cruise port is to check out local events and celebrations that may be taking place while you are in port. Here’s a sampling of events to consider.

This event raises money for local non-profit organizations.

St. John Carnival

St. John also has a carnival, but it’s celebrated later in the year than the one in St. Thomas. Although the St. John Carnival also runs for about a month, the larger events fall during the final week which coincides with Emancipation Day (July 3) and US Independence Day (July 4). There’s a food fair, a parade, beauty pageants, fireworks, and more. Join thousands of St. Thomas residents as they flock to St. John for the festivities.

On a multigenerational family cruise, my kids got to know their grandmother better — and my husband and I got free babysitting

  • My family has cruised several times and recently took my mother-in-law along on her first cruise.
  • Cruising with Grammy proved to be a great option for a multigenerational vacation.
  • Our experience on the Caribbean Princess was the perfect itinerary for older, first-time cruisers.

Insider Today

My kids are teenagers now, but we've been taking them on cruises since they were tiny. Each time we returned from our days at sea, I told my husband how much I wanted to take his parents on a cruise with us, as it seemed like the perfect multigenerational vacation to me for a variety of reasons. My father-in-law passed away unexpectedly last year, and the devastating loss made me even more determined to get my mother-in-law, who my kids call Grammy, onto a cruise ship with my family.

We finally planned an eight-day cruise aboard the Caribbean Princess this March, and we were all so excited. Not only did a cruise ship seem like a perfect spot to keep me, my husband, our kids, and Grammy all entertained for an entire week, but I thought my mother-in-law, who enjoys a slower pace of life, would enjoy the build-your-own-schedule style of a cruise.

The multigenerational trip , for which one of my mother-in-law's best friends tagged along as her travel partner, proved to be an unforgettable memory for all of us. My kids left the ship feeling like they got to know their grandmother — who lives far from our Florida home in Pennsylvania — even better, and so did I.

Cruising was a great way to spend time together

My mother-in-law had never cruised before, so we chose to book the Caribbean Princess because we'd had great experiences with Princess Cruises before. Plus, it had a great mixture of days at sea and ports of call, and the ports we visited were easy ones to navigate: Princess Cays in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and St. Thomas.

The trip was a perfect environment for making memories with my mother-in-law and her friend. On days at sea, there were tons of things for us to do: family activities, like dinner or trivia, that we'd all do together; individual activities, like paper-flower-making classes for the retirees in our group; and activities in the ship's teen club for my kids. On port days, we planned excursions through Princess Cruises that allowed everyone in our party to experience the destination, regardless of speed or physical abilities.

My kids got to see their Grammy be adventurous

While we focused on port excursions that offered driving tours and other slower-paced ways to see the destinations, my mother-in-law was a great sport when it came to being adventurous. In Puerto Rico, she climbed 100 steps to the top of a tower in the El Yunque National Forest tropical rainforest and tried mofongo for the first time on the streets of San Juan. She also rode a Skyride to a spot 700 feet above the harbor in St. Thomas to take in beautiful, panoramic views and climbed out onto rocks overlooking the beach on Princess' private island, Princess Cays.

Related stories

Seeing their grandmother's desire to see and learn new things was fun for my kids, and as experienced travelers, they enjoyed helping her along the way.

We had great conversations during meals

Most nights on the ship, we had dinner together in one of the main dining rooms. One night, we even splurged on a specialty dining experience, paying a bit extra for a steakhouse dinner at Princess' fleetwide restaurant, Crown Grill. Dining aboard a cruise ship is often a multi-course experience that unfolds at a leisurely pace, so having an hour or two to chat with their grandmother each night was special for my kids.

To keep things interesting, we took a book of questions along with us on the trip, breaking it out while we waited for our food to arrive each night and asking questions like, "What's your favorite way to connect with nature?" or, "Do you think money can by happiness?" Hearing each other's answers was a great way for everyone to connect and learn about each other.

Even when it didn't go as planned, we found things to laugh about

Combining a large group when traveling can bring its share of stressful situations, but even in the chaos we found things to laugh about. My kids are still talking about the time Grammy and her friend went back to the tour bus without us in Puerto Rico, and we thought we lost them during our excursion to Castillo San Felipe del Morro. But, all miscommunications and frustrating moments aside, the trip made us stronger as a family and was well worth those moments of stress.

Yes, bringing Grammy along meant we got some free babysitting

Although my kids are now teenagers, having Grammy on board the ship to help out was an invaluable part of our vacation. My husband and I went to another specialty dining restaurant on board the ship for a date night and even stayed in town in St. Thomas for some grow-up time, sightseeing, and shopping while the kids returned to the ship with my mother-in-law.

Though we spent the bulk of our time hanging out together as a family, having some extra help aboard the ship allowed my husband and I to make some vacation memories with just the two of us.

She's always supported us, and it was nice to thank her

My mother-in-law has always been there for my husband and me. She has taken care of our kids while we reconnect by traveling together and shared wisdom with us when we're struggling with life's stresses. It was a true joy to share our vacation with her and treat her to a week of sunshine and sightseeing after all the ways she's supported us throughout our nearly 20 years of marriage. Cruising together as a family was a great way to thank her.

Being together held an unexpected benefit

The last two days of our sailing were days at sea and, early on the first day, we learned of a family tragedy that had occurred back in Pennsylvania, where most of my husband's family lives. The tragedy was significant enough that my mother-in-law probably would have gone home early if we had been on a vacation on land. But because we were in the middle of the ocean, we were unable to cut the trip short and spent two days together processing what had occurred.

While there's never an optimal time for a great loss to occur, we found ourselves grateful that we were close to my mother-in-law when the news came in so we could help her process her grief in those first few days. Had we been in Florida and she in Pennsylvania, we'd have felt powerless to help comfort her, but being together during that time proved to be invaluable.

Experiencing a family tragedy during our vacation wasn't in the plan, but it was a reminder to all of us of the importance of being close to family and experiencing the world together while we can.

Let battle commence!

Don’t get me wrong, I do think that St Petersburg is a nice city – but I also think that Moscow is a fantastic city and beyond doubt the best in Russia. The entire region is steeped in illustrious history, from Red Square in the heart of the metropolis, where impressive historic landmarks including the Lenin Mausoleum and St Basil’s Cathedral dominate the skyline, to the world-famous Kremlin. If its history and culture you’re after, St Petersburg simply does not compare.

Moscow

Moscow also surpasses St Petersburg in terms of areas of natural beauty as well as tranquil parks and gardens. On a pleasant day, visitors can stroll through a number of the city’s wonderful green spaces, including the vast Gorkiy Park, the former imperial estate of Kolomenskoye and the ever-popular Park Sokolniki, filled with beautiful flora and a collection of charming attractions. Moving further off the beaten track is difficult in St Peterburg, whereas in Moscow, stunning outlying areas such as the Patriarshi pond area and the Japanese Garden in Botanichesky Sad offer the perfect place to spend a peaceful day.

When it comes to the shopping and dining experiences on offer, Moscow beats St Petersburg hands down. A wealth of authentic local food, delicious international cuisine and familiar fast food outlets are scattered across the city, offering tourists a plethora of culinary delights. Incredible mixes of gastronomic cultures are available in Moscow. Visitors will find everything from Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes to Armenian and Azerbaijani cuisine.

Tourist’s hoping to pick up some local gifts will find a treasure trove of souvenirs across Moscow, at the range of opulent shopping malls and quaint marketplaces located all over the centre of the city.

In my humble (and correct) opinion – based on the facts in front of me – St Petersburg doesn’t hold a candle to the amazing sights and sounds of Moscow, Russia’s world-famous capital city.

St Petersburg

Sure, Moscow’s the capital; it’s great for squares, overly-expensive cups of coffee and the like. But you can never take Russia’s second city out of contention. Yes, it was built on a swamp, but Peter the Great clearly knew what he was doing. St. Petersburg is one of the most vital modern European cities, don’t let the devotees to the (admittedly, pretty) sights of Moscow fool you.

Perhaps it’s because St. Petersburg’s architect was Italian that it manages to so thoroughly stand out from the crowd of Russian cities. Maybe it’s the winding canals and the classical architecture. Regardless of the past, St. Petersburg is a city which manages to straddle the sweet spot between historical importance and modern style.

St Petersburg

But who says Moscow rules the roost when it comes to the historical? There are enough sights in St. Petersburg to keep tourists occupied for days, if not weeks.

Leading the pack is the iconic Winter Palace, an eternally magnificent reminder that Russia is always a hotspot for architecture. Beautifully pristine even after all these years, it remains a contender for the finest photographic subject in Europe – a grand mass of imperial pillars and colourful décor.

And then, of course, there’s the State Hermitage Museum. If the Winter Palace had Moscow on the ropes, this is where St. Petersburg draws back and flings out an uppercut to finish it off.  The museum remains firmly rooted in prodigious hype, but that never stops it from living up to it. Everything from Egyptian mummies to Picasso masterpieces can be found in the endless varnished halls of the State Hermitage, and like the city itself, you’ll wish you had days more to explore it.

And to top it all off, you can visit it all during the legendary White Nights, where on long summer days the sun never seems to dip below the horizon. St Petersburg might be known as a second city, but Moscow has best be looking over its shoulder.

Moscow: question for those who have gone from St Petersburg

I have read many of the threads that discuss whether or not Moscow is worth the expense and long day, especially when there are only 2 days in port.  I realize there are two strong opinions from people with one side saying it is worth it and the other side says stay in St Petersburg. We have decided to go Moscow on day 1 of our visit.

So, those who have done the long trip to Moscow....did you go with the cruise ship or a private guide?   If a private guide, who and would you recommend them?  Did you take the train both ways or fly one direction?

Been to Moscow several times. We have used the Sapsan both ways and have also flown both ways - never a combo of the train/plane. We enjoyed the Sapsan more than the flight. We have NOT travelled to Moscow when arriving by cruise ship so have no comment on your particular situation regarding a one day tour with only 2 days in St. Pete.  Good luck - hope the visit meets your expectations.

Thanks for the info.  Good to know you enjoyed the train more than the plane - I would expect we would too as flying is typically more hassle than taking the train.

We decided to book the trip to Moscow with the cruise ship after learning that if we miss the train or plane we don’t get a refund in addition to missing Moscow.  And, I’ve had friends who’s ship missed the St Petersburg stop due to weather.

Cool Cruiser

Moscow is a great city but I would rather spend all two days in St Petersburg. Some years ago we had almost a week there and still it doesn’t seem enough. We also had one day in Moscow and the journey arranged by the local travel agency was well organized and comfortable. In a view of time restrictions of the journey (we spent almost 8 hours on the train and just 6-7 hours in the city) one day in Moscow still felt a little rushed. Anyway, enjoy planning your trip and hope you have a great time in Russia!

Coral

Just make sure the day you are going to Moscow, it is not one of their holidays or even a day before a holiday.

Moscow is an amazing city but it is frustrating when Red Square is closed for parades, etc.... It is hard to determine when they close it but it is definitely closed for their holidays. When it is closed - you can only walk around the exterior of the square and look in.

Thanks!   I will check.  We are in Moscow May 16.  I know May 9 is a holiday.

I have 2 days in St. Petersburg and am thinking about this possibility. I think it’s hard to do this with 2 days. The first day will take longer time to go ashore because of the immigration process. The second day is not possible due to the early all abroad time. It seems that it’s only worth doing it if there are 3 days in St. Petersburg especially when a full day of touring in Moscow is preferred.

For 2 days - spend the time in St. Petersburg. There is so much to see there. Save this for a 2nd trip.

When we were in St. Petersburg we were also very interested in visiting Moscow. We were already in Russia why not visit as much places as we could, right? We used Anastasia Travel for our St. Petersburg tour and also asked them to include Moscow. They were very helpful and were very much willing to arrange a day trip to Moscow for us but they suggested we just stay in St. Petersburg since we only had 2 days. They were kind enough to explain that we would just waste time and money if me push through with the Moscow trip. We would spend more time on the train instead of using the time to explore and enjoy the sights. They were actually correct and we ended up enjoying a wonderful 2-day tour in St. Petersburg. I guess we'll have to go back to see Moscow and make sure to stay longer!

When we went to St Petersburg we had the same dilemma. We decided not to go to Moscow and didn’t regret it one bit. There is so much to see! If you spend the 2 days in St Petersburg you can go and see Peterhof Palace on one of the days. We were on a Princess cruise and like flowslow, we booked our private tours with Katharina from Anastasia Travel.   This way we used our time to the fullest to see as much as possible at our pace with a personal guide. (We are not fond of the big group tours from the cruise lines).

We have two days and decided only staying in SPB for both days. We are thinking of forming a private tour with other cruisers on another forum as the CC roll call for that cruise is so quiet. We are looking into Anastasia Travel as well. Very excited to go!

I'm not sure about customs when coming in on a cruise ship. We were told that if we wanted to leave the ship, we would have to be on a tour, either a ships tour or private tour. I know we had to show our tour tickets at customs to be allowed to go further. We chose Alla tours and they were fantastic. We were docked in St. Petersburg for 3 days and we did go to Moscow on the Capsan train on the 2nd day. It was a VERY long day. We had to meet our group at 6:00am and were on the train at 7:00am. We arrived back at to our cabin at 1:30am the next day. It was a wonderful day and we're so glad we went but if we were in St. Petersburg for only 2 days, I probably wouldn't spend a day in Moscow. It is a 4 hour train ride each way, and if you need to be back to the ship to depart, it may not leave you much time in Moscow. The 8 hours we spent there, wasn't nearly enough. Traffic is horrible and we ended up getting off our bus and taking the subway to Red Square. Those 8 hours allowed us a tour of Red Square, which was phenomenal as well as a quick walk through GUM department store and a ride on the subway with several stops to see the mosaics, sculptures and chandeliers that are in the corridors of the subway stops.

But.....there is so much to see in St. Petersburg , the 2 days we spent there, were a whirl.

Whatever you decide to do, be sure you're in line to get off the ship before the ship arrives in port. We were in line an hour early and there were still about 20 people ahead of us. We found that the cruise ship allowed their tour groups to get off the ship first, so when we got to customs, the lines were outrageous. It took us about an hour in line and we were late starting our tour. I had organized the tour with Alla and had advertised it on our cruise forum here at Cruise Critic. There were 12 of us and we met up on the ship each morning and went through customs together so we all met the tour bus at the same time. That was very helpful!

The lines the first day were the worst and days 2 and 3 went much more quickly. Also, everyone was getting off the ship at the same time on Day 1, but tours met and left at different times on Days 2 and 3.

This is one of the reasons that we decided to use the cruise ship to go to Moscow our first day in St Petersburg.

I believe that the ship tours to Moscow go via air, right?

Yes, as others have noted, there is MUCH to see in Saint Petersburg and in spending a week there one will barely scratch the surface - the same is true for Moscow.

It sounds like you want to get a "taste" of both cities - don't allow anyone to "throw water" on your plans as you best know what you want to do. You can always return for an extended visit.  😉

No, our ship tour is going by train there and back unless I misread something.  You are right...we just want a taste of both cities.  In fact, that is what we get from all cruise port stops - just a taste.  We are never there long enough to the see the area completely.

Interesting - I thought that the ship tours flew to Moscow when in port for only 2 days. Hope you will post upon return and let us know how it went.

Double checked and it says we go to Moscow on the high speed train.   Come back the same way.   From all I’ve read it takes a little longer (ship to Moscow sites) to fly than to take the train.

I've been thinking about that - and I might be wrong, but it seems to me an SPB-Moscow combo over a 3-day cruise is one of the few remaining cases where obtaining a full-fledged Russian visa actually makes sense (especially for families/groups and especially if one is willing to do some DIY trip planning).

Just to make sure, though - for those staying on the ship, is there some kind of curfew, or are you able to come and go as you please?

If you have a Russian visa there is no curfew - you may come and go as you wish. In fact, if you so choose, you can spend the entire time in the city (staying at a hotel in either Moscow or St. Petersburg) rather than returning to your ship each evening - but ONLY if you have a visa.

That is what my research shows too.  A quick google search showed the tourist visas for US citizens are $160.  I’m willing to pay for a tour rather than get the visa.  We’ve gotten most of the visas that are a pain to get and I’m tired of doing that.

2 minutes ago, Wayfairers said: I’m willing to pay for a tour rather than get the visa

I understand. Ru visa process can be expensive and time consuming, especially if you live far away from one of the visa centers.

I'm just trying to come up with a reasonably conservative number - what can one realistically expect to pay for a mad 1-day Moscow dash if they go DIY.

For a regular SPB-only itinerary, visa doesn't seem to make sense - not only price-wise, but also from the standpoint of convenience - all the local operators have their itineraries down to a science.

With Moscow, though, it's not so clear-cut.

I found that most of the tour operators will give you a tour but no guarantee that you make it to Moscow because you will miss the train if debarkation is too slow.  I found one tour that offers a 2 day tour with a flight to Moscow day 1 and train back and St Petersburg day 2.   Seriously considered them.   I briefly thought about getting a visa and spending the night in Moscow but never priced everything out. If you look into that I would love to see what you find. Probably not for us though because I want to see some of both cities.

I have visited Russia multiple times. I received my latest 3 year visa in May and here are the associated costs:

Single/Double/Multiple entry visa, consular fee = $198

Visa Center Processing fee = $50

Total = $248   (this is your total if you apply in person at one of the 4 consulates located in the USA - since I don't live near a Russian consulate, I must use the more costly mail option)

SO ... here is what I actually paid:

Multiple entry visa, consular fee = $198

Visa Center Processing fee by mail = $120

Return shipping/handling fee = $35

Total = $353

Totally worth the fee as I spend multiple weeks in Russia yearly and prefer DIY - personally, I would not consider a visa if it was a one time visit via cruise.

So, for DIY, added to the visa expense, one must add the cost of the sapsan train (or flight), Moscow transportation (metro is great), food & associated entrance fees to the Kremlin (and whatever else one has the time/desire to visit).

FYI: There is a HOHO in both Moscow & St. Petersburg.

Okay, I think the diy budget might be something like ₽20,000 (about $300) per person. This includes:

Train tickets: ₽9000 (5+4); Kremlin+armory: 1700 (1000+700)

Boat ride:600

Meals: 3000 (1500 per casual meal)

Contingencies (Uber ride if needed, etc): 2500.

It's based on a number of assumptions, so real-life mileage will vary - please let me know if you identify some glaring omissions or errors.

Assumptions:

Done on day 2 of three.

Good weather (lots of outside/walking time)

Earliest Sapsan to Moscow, overnight double decker from Moscow (no hotel stays)

Train tickets purchased at least 30 days in advance, economy for Sapsan and economy plus for the double decker (includes a bottle of water and a piece of gingerbread).

All group members are adults

Done on a day when the Kremlin, Red Sq, and other Moscow attractions are actually open.

Boat ride via watertrams-radisson.ru (the cheapest option with English audio guide)

Sample itinerary:

leave SPB on Sapsan 743a (5:30am), sleep on the train.

Arrive Moscow 9am

DIY Metro tour until 11am

Kremlin excursion (cathedral Sq, DIY) 11:30

Armory excursion (audioguide) 12:30

Quick lunch (at GUM stolovaya or fast food chains at Manezhnaya sq) : 2 to 3pm.

Walk to Zaryadye boat pier via Alexander's garden, Red Sq, Zaryadye. Boats leave every 30 minutes. Route: Zaryadye- Gorky Park - luzhniki- Ukraina - turnaround - sparrow hills - Gorky Park. Time on board: 2 hrs.

Gorky Park/muzeon (5:30 to 7:30).

Head back (metro) towards red sq for evening walk/dinner (tverskaya-kamergersky-b.dmitrovka-metropol-nikolskaya area)

Need to be back at the train station by 10:30 to catch the 006aa train departing at 10:50.

Back to SPB at 6:47 am.

Baltimore cruises to reroute after bridge collapse pauses port traffic

Carnival, royal caribbean will move some operations to norfolk while baltimore recovers from key bridge collapse.

cruise st thomas port

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement Tuesday that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

On Thursday, the cruise company said the current sailing would end in Norfolk.

“Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements,” Royal Caribbean said.

Upcoming cruises on April 4 and 12 will sail from Norfolk as well, and passengers will be compensated for the change. The ship was already scheduled for maintenance in the Bahamas after the April 12 cruise.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.
