Helicopter Tours around New Jersey

Land and sea are not the only ways to see New York–you can also check it out by air.

Take to the sky to see Manhattan from a different perspective on this New York City helicopter tour. Get up close and personal with the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, George Washington Bridge, and many others without waiting in line or traffic.

If you time it right, take a helicopter ride just before sunset to get a spectacular view of the city and sky transitioning from day to night. However, the city’s mood changes from work to play if you take a night flight. In addition, you’ll get the bird’s eye view of all the building lights and 9/11 memorial plaza’s Tribute in Light — things you can’t experience during the day.

Usually, helicopter tours can only hold a handful of guests. So if you’re with a large group, you may need to book separate tours or consider a different type of tour.

What the New Jersey earthquake tells us about the fault system beneath the Northeast

More commonly associated with california than new jersey, friday’s earthquake was the first many northeasterners had ever felt..

Friday morning's earthquake , an event more commonly associated with California, was the first many Northeasterners had ever felt.

The temblor, which measured 4.8 on the Richter scale, was considered a shallow earthquake by the U.S. Geological Survey, meaning that it occurred at a depth of zero to 70 kilometers below ground. The USGS reported Friday morning that there was a 38% chance of an aftershock measuring magnitude 3.0 or more over the next week, and approximately eight hours later, one measuring 4.0 was recorded.

The energy released by an earthquake is weakened the greater the distance from where it occurs, so while the New Jersey earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 kilometers, the shaking it produced would have been even less if it had emanated from a deeper level.

But Scott Brandenberg, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, told Yahoo News that Friday’s earthquake is probably not indicative that longer-term earthquake activity is on the rise in the region.

What are the fault lines under New York and New Jersey?

Fault lines are fractures between blocks of rock in the Earth’s crust, the layer closest to the surface. These lines allow tectonic plates to move and earthquakes occur when two plates slide past each other.

The Ramapo Fault System is the longest in the northeastern U.S., stretching from Pennsylvania to southeastern New York.

Map of the Ramapo Fault System: Earthquake epicenter at Lebanon, NJ. Hopewell Fault (red) and Flemington Fault (light blue) join the Ramapo (yellow) fault near the quake epicenter. pic.twitter.com/KiBHAYGaY2 — Aaron Astor (@AstorAaron) April 5, 2024

“It’s pretty inactive,” Brandenberg told Yahoo News. “The reason why earthquakes are rare here is that the central and eastern U.S. is considered a stable continental region that is far away from the plate boundaries where tectonic plates move relative to each other.”

New Jersey has had several small earthquakes since the end of 2020, but they were all of a magnitude of less than 2.5, which barely registers, according to Michigan Tech University .

Since 1957, the USGS has logged 188 earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or higher that have occurred within a 250-mile radius of New York City. The earthquake on Friday had the third-highest magnitude out of the data set.

Are fault lines monitored?

The USGS maintains several monitoring instruments around the country for known fault lines and volcanos. Data from these measurements is transmitted in real-time to researchers in California. While the fault lines are being monitored, scientists cannot predict when earthquakes will occur. Researchers can review scientific data and calculate probabilities for future earthquakes, but a short-term earthquake prediction method does not exist.

Is the Northeast’s infrastructure built to sustain earthquakes?

“There are earthquake building codes throughout the United States, so every structure is built to withstand some shaking level,” Brandenberg explained. “Other hazards, like storms, pose more risk than earthquakes.”

In terms of underground public transportation systems — with New York City having one of the oldest and largest transit systems in the world — Brandenberg again evinced little concern.

“Underground structures, like subways, tend to perform pretty well during earthquake-shaking,” he said. “There are potential problems if the fault ruptures all the way to the surface, but that's unlikely for the magnitude of earthquakes that tend to occur in the Northeast.”

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

By Weiyi Cai ,  Agnes Chang ,  Lauren Leatherby ,  Lazaro Gamio ,  Leanne Abraham and Scott Reinhard

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

A video shows the cargo ship striking the bridge and the resulting collapse of the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

Follow our live coverage .

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.

Can climate change make rare northeast earthquakes more common? Experts weigh in

Earthquakes on the east coast are rare but sea level rise and frequent flooding may lead to a higher frequency of quakes. but here's why you shouldn't be alarmed., by linda gaudino • published april 5, 2024 • updated on april 5, 2024 at 6:04 pm, what to know.

  • A magnitude 4.8  earthquake  struck New Jersey and parts of New York on Friday morning.
  • A magnitude 1.7 earthquake hit Astoria, Queens and Roosevelt Island earlier in January.

Earthquakes have no seasonality and can occur at any time, but mornings and evenings are more likely to see a strike, according to the USGS.

New Jersey and New York City dwellers were abruptly shaken Friday morning by an escalating, rumbling vibration. It was the second time this year that an earthquake struck the region, triggering panicking phone calls from Manhattan to Albany to Long Island, Montclair and Brooklyn.

An earthquake is usually a foreign experience to New Yorkers, and it naturally sounded the alarms with the minds jumping to the worst possible conclusions. However, it was just nature running its course and experts say residents may need to be more prepared for the future.

The Northeast region has experienced over 2,000 recorded quakes since the 1700s, according to the National Earthquake Information Center . The one in New Jersey on Friday was magnitude 4.8 and didn't cause major damage. So far, there have only been 13 quakes in the area that were deemed "damaging" by the center.

New York City felt another quake earlier this year. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 1.7 earthquake near Astoria, Queens in January.

Earthquakes are a result of pressure released in the form of seismic waves from fault lines, or fractures in the Earth's crust. Fault lines are caused by the sliding of the planet's outer shell, or tectonic plates, which are always moving, but at times, get stressed and undergo friction resulting in an energy release, or quake.

Dr. Antonios Marsellos, an associate professor in the Department of Geology, Environment, and Sustainability at Hofstra University, explained that even though New York is sitting on a specific type of plate, earthquakes do happen.

"An earthquake is based on tectonic plates, and New York is sitting on a 'lazy' plate, which is good, meaning we do not have so many earthquakes, but there are other things that happen -- too much rain or drought," Dr. Marsellos told NBC New York .

Long periods of flooding can cause water levels to rise leading to possible landslides. Those slides can "lubricate" faults and may account for a higher frequency of quakes, explained Dr. Marsellos.

The truth is that this phenomenon is happening all the time around the world. The National Earthquake Information Center pinpoints approximately 20,000 earthquakes internationally each year and about 55 per day.

"The planet that we live on is constantly moving, although very slowly. The Earth has a large mantle that connects all the way from the surface down to the liquid iron core, and that convection is driving motions at the surface that lead to earthquakes wherever the rocks are sufficiently brittle," Jeffrey Park, professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale University, explained what is behind these occurrences.

Magnitude 4.8 earthquake hits NJ, rattles entire tri-state; 4.0 aftershock felt hours later

Large earthquakes occur at fault zones, or areas of fracture in the Earth's crust, where the rock will break. Most dangerous fault areas are on the West Coast, including California and Washington state.

Dr. Park indicated the continuous rise in sea levels can increase the amount of pressure exerted on the Earth's shelves and coastlines, resulting in mostly scattered and infrequent quakes with long lead times.

The positive takeaway is that experts say there is no need to be alarmed and no elevated quake is expected any time soon.

"I wouldn't worry about it too much. The East Coast has been geologically stable for millions of years," said Dr. Stephen Holler, an associate professor of Physics at Fordham University.

The USGS states there are 16 major earthquakes in any given year with a range between magnitude 7 and 8. The government's agency records show over the past five decades that the long-term average number of major earthquakes has exceeded about a dozen times.

What causes earthquakes? The science behind why seismic events like today's New Jersey shakeup happen

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 6:40 PM EDT / CBS News

A strong earthquake centered outside of New York City  rattled much of the East Coast on Friday morning, followed by several aftershocks.

The earthquake — which the U.S. Geological Survey said was magnitude 4.8  — occurred at about 10:20 a.m. The quake was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, which is about 40 miles west of New York City, according to the USGS. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or major damage, but many who felt the quake took to social media to describe the unusual experience.

Here's what to know about earthquake activity on the East Coast, and what can cause such temblors.

What causes earthquakes?

Earthquakes occur when the plates that make up the Earth's crust move around. These plates, called tectonic plates, can push against each other.

Earthquakes are most common along fault lines, which are fractures that allow the plates to move.

Earthquakes occur when two plates suddenly slip past each other, setting off seismic waves that cause the planet's surface to shake, according to the USGS.

What is an earthquake, scientifically speaking?

An earthquake is what happens when the seismic energy from plates slipping past each other rattles the planet's surface.

Those seismic waves are like ripples on a pond, the USGS said.

The earthquake will be strongest at its epicenter, the point on the surface directly above where the quake started, and the effects will be diminished as they spread further. In Friday's earthquake, the epicenter was in northern New Jersey, but its effects were felt in New York City,  Philadelphia  and as far away as  Baltimore .

Map shows area affected by a 4.7 earthquake, centered in New Jersey

What caused the East Coast earthquake?

It's not clear what fault line Friday's earthquake originated on.

There is a major fault line in New Jersey called the Ramapo Fault, which stems from the Appalachian Mountains, CBS New York reported. There are also at least five smaller fault lines under the island of Manhattan.

On the West Coast, it can be possible to determine exactly which fault line a quake originated along, the USGS said, because of how well-studied some plate boundaries like the San Andreas fault are. But on the East Coast, the nearest plate boundaries are in the center of the Atlantic Ocean, making it hard to study the area.

"The urban corridor (between New York City and Wilmington, Delaware) is laced with known faults but numerous smaller or deeply buried faults remain undetected. Even the known faults are poorly located at earthquake depths," the USGS says on its website. "Accordingly, few, if any, earthquakes in the urban corridor can be linked to named faults."

Are earthquakes common on the East Coast?

Earthquakes are rarer on the East Coast compared to the West Coast, but they do happen . Moderately damaging earthquakes strike between New York and Wilmington, Delaware, about twice a century, the USGS said, and smaller earthquakes are felt in the region roughly every two to three years.

While East Coast earthquakes are less common than their counterparts on the West Coast, they tend to be felt over a wide area, as evidenced by Friday's quake, the USGS said. A 4.0 magnitude quake could be felt more than 60 miles from its epicenter, the agency said.

Will earthquakes happen more frequently?

In January, the USGS estimated that nearly 75% of the U.S. could experience a damaging earthquake in the next century. The prediction is based on research done by dozens of scientists and engineers using seismic studies, historical geological data and new information to identify nearly 500 additional fault lines that could produce damaging quakes.

It is possible that the central and northeastern Atlantic Coastal region could see more temblors, researchers said. Earthquakes are also likely in California and Alaska, which are historically seismically active regions.
