Iberostar Estadio

Iberostar Estadio

Club: RCD Mallorca | Opening: 1999 | Capacity: 23,142 seats

History and description

Iberostar Estadio, until 2004 called Son Moix, was built for the 1999 Universiade Games that were held at Palma de Mallorca. The stadium became the new home of Mallorca after the games, replacing the old Estadio Lluis Sitjar that had been home to the club since 1945.

In 2004, the naming rights of the stadium were sold to telecommunications company ONO, and in 2010 once again to Iberostar in a new deal.

Mallorca has never been entirely happy at Son Moix with its stands far off the pitch due to the running track. In 2010, Mallorca therefore revealed plans to build a new proper football stadium, which it hoped to occupy in 2016, but due to the club’s limited financial possibilities these were finally shelved.

How to get to Iberostar Estadio

Iberostar Estadio is located on the north-western edge of Palma de Mallorca, about three kilometres from the city centre.

The stadium lies adjacent to the city’s ring road. Take exit 7 and follow the signs for Son Moix.

If using public transport, the stadium can be reached with bus 6 (to Can Valero) or 8 (to Son Roca). Take the bus from Estació Intermodal (Plaza de España) on the north-eastern edge of the city centre. Line 8 has the more frequent service. The journey takes about 20 minutes, get off at Son Moix.

Address: C/ Camí dels Reis S/N, 07011 Palma de Mallorca

Eat, drink, and sleep

Iberostar Estadio is located on the edge of the city in an area that is a mix of residential buildings and some large retail. There are hardly any bars and restaurants around, and eating and drinking is better done in Palma’s city centre.

There are no hotels directly near Iberostar Estadio , but there is a good variety in central Palma de Mallorca. Click here for an overview of the options.

Stadium Tour

My partner and I were visiting Palma for 4 nights from 28 March so we decided to take in a stadium tour. We like to visit football stadiums when we are away if possible. I contacted the stadium via the details on the website and Roman answered my email and arranged for us to visit the stadium at 10.30 am on 31 March. Roman was our guide for the tour and it was really interesting to hear about the history of the club and see the old photos etc. We visited the museum and trophy room, vip box, changing rooms, press room and the pitch itself and finished off with a visit to the club shop. The tour was excellent value only 6 euro per adult and the stadium is easy to reach by bus - the number 8 and 6 route from the main square in Palma and get off at Son Moix sports centre.

The Iberostar Soccer-Stadium, home of Real Club Mallorca. You will find a Cafeteria/Restaurant on the ground ( Mallorcafe ) open 7 days a week.

Great views of the action from all parts of the ground in spite of the running track because the tiering is so steep. The stadium only has the smallest of roofs on one side, so it's fortunate that most of the season is played in decent Balearic weather, and not in the most extreme heat of the summer. We really enjoyed the local half time snack of choice, which is basically a huge chocolate biscuit, about the same size as your head, and only costs a couple of euros. Likewise, the beer is fairly cheap, though we had our suspicions as to whether or not it was alcohol free.

Went here a few times to pre season friendlies.Place was always full mostly tourists although one end of the ground was full of locals creating a great athmosphere. Easy to get to by public bus from Plaza Espana.Sadly Mallorca have been relegated for 2013 season

Went to watch Mallora play Vallencia and loved every minute of it. Ground only half full so plenty of good seats to watch from. Beautiful sunny day in Sept, good access to the ground and FREE parking. Ticket prices ray greatly depending on the visitors. I paid 35€ for a mid priced seat but for Barcelona visit in 4 weeks the same seat is 75€ I think.stadium seating is very steeply tiered so beware if you have a seat in the top tier of stand. Refreshments easily available and well priced. Access to the ground is easy...from the Palma ring road M20 at junction 7. A great day out...recommended....Real Mallorca are a good side too

RCD Mallorca History

Alfonso XIII Foot-Ball Club was the name under which the organization that would eventually become RCD Mallorca was registered with the Spanish Football Federation on March 5, 1916, the day it was established.

A few weeks after the club was founded, little time was wasted in forming the directors of Alfonso XIII FBC, which were led by engineer Adolfo Vázquez Humasqué and included eight other people who are passionate about football. After registering further fast-tracked development, their first stadium, the Buenos Aires field, was opened just 20 days later with a competitive match against FC Barcelona. The match served as the stadium’s inauguration. In spite of the fact that the match resulted in a disheartening loss by the score of 8–0, it wasn’t long before King Alfonso XIII himself requested the royal adoption of ‘Real’ in the team’s title, which resulted in the club changing its name to Real Sociedad Alfonso XIII Foot-Ball Club.

Real Sociedad Alfonso XIII was recognized by the Catalan Federation as the unofficial champion of the Balearic Islands in 1917, and as such, they were awarded admittance into the championship of the second-tier league. After securing a spot in the championship game, Los Bermellones went on to win their first championship with a convincing victory over Futbol Club Palafrugell in Barcelona. The score of the game was 3–1.

The board of directors was able to host rare exhibitions against foreign sides such as Ajax in 1923, Uruguay’s national team in 1925, Chilean outfit Colo-Colo in 1927, and one of the Czech Republic’s oldest teams, Prague Meteor, in 1930. They were able to organize matches against peninsular clubs such as RCD Espanyol and Real Murcia up until the 1930s. During that time period, they were also able to organize matches against peninsular clubs such as

The club was renamed “Club Deportivo Mallorca” in 1931 after the foundation of the Second Spanish Republic, which forbade any type of reference to the monarchy in any context.

Although major fixtures and competitions across Spain were soon interrupted by the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936, the squad enjoyed a highly successful spell by winning every possible championship they entered into. This was due to the fact that football on the island remained resistant to the postponement that was experienced throughout the country. After the war was finally over, there was an immediate restart of competition with teams from the Peninsula, and shortly after that, the Second Division was established with five groups of eight teams each.

On September 22, 1945, the moment had come to say farewell to Buenos Aires Field and up sticks to Es Fort, a stadium with a maximum capacity of 16,000 that would be called home for nearly half a century and undergo multiple expansions. This event took place during a time in the Second Division. On the following day, Es Fort thrashed Jerez 3–0 in their first game of the new season. Forward Sebastián Pocov, defender Saturnino Grech, and goalkeeper Antoni Ramallets were all part of the winning lineup. Carlos Sanz scored Es Fort’s first goal in front of packed out terraces. However, the name Es Fort was only used for a brief period of time before being changed to Llu’s Sitjar by the board of directors in order to pay tribute to the individual who was responsible for driving the development of the field.

The Balearic club reclaimed their “Real” title during the 1949–1950 campaign, at which point they changed their name to Real Club Deportivo Mallorca.

Mallorca made their first appearance in the Copa del Rey final in the 1990–1991 season, however they were defeated by Atlético Madrid by a single goal.

In 1997, Argentine Héctor Caper was brought on board to serve as manager. After a 1–1 draw in Mestalla, the 1998 Copa del Rey Final was played, and the team was defeated by FC Barcelona on penalties. This happened during his first season with the club. However, because Barcelona had won the league, Mallorca faced them in the 1998 Supercopa de Espaa. Mallorca defeated Barcelona 3–1 overall to claim their first major title in the process. The double won by Barcelona also qualified Mallorca for the last edition of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, which was played in 1998–1999; nevertheless, they were defeated by S.S. Lazio of Italy in the final match at Villa Park by a score of 2–1.

In 1999, Mallorca also finished in third place, which was their best-ever finish, and qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time. However, they were ousted by Molde FK of Norway before the group stage due to the away goals rule. Luis Aragonés finished tied for third in the league in 2001 before leaving for an Atlético Madrid team that was playing in the second division at the time. In the final of the Copa del Rey, which took place on June 28, 2003 in Elche, Mallorca defeated Recreativo de Huelva by a score of 3–0 to claim the title. Walter Pandiani and Samuel Eto’o were the goal scorers for Mallorca (two).

On the final day of the 2012–13 La Liga season, Mallorca was demoted to the Segunda Division. In January of 2016, American billionaire Robert Sarver and former NBA player Steve Nash purchased the club for slightly more than €20 million. At the time of the purchase, the squad was in danger of being demoted to the third division.

With just one game left to play in the season, Mallorca was relegated to the third division of Spanish football for the first time since 1981 on June 4, 2017.

A year later, they were successful in the 2017–18 season after defeating CF Rayo Majadahonda in the play-off final and regaining their footing under the leadership of new manager Vicente Moreno.

Mallorca won the 2019 Segunda División play-offs against Deportivo de La Corua with a score of 3–2 on aggregate, after losing the first game of the series by a score of 2-0. This victory allowed Mallorca to earn a promotion to the 2019–20 La Liga season for the second season in a row. However, a year later they were demoted to a lower position. As another year, Mallorca successfully reclaimed its place in the first division after Almera was defeated by Cartagena.

RCD Mallorca Stadium

The RCD Mallorca football team plays their home games at Visit Mallorca Stadium, which is located in Palma de Mallorca on the island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands of Spain. It is the arena with the greatest seating capacity in the Balearic Islands and the 26th most in Spain overall. During the pandemic of 2020 COVID-19, the name of the stadium was changed in a concerted attempt led by the Consell de Mallorca and other governmental institutions to rekindle tourist activities on the island, which are the island’s primary source of revenue.

The stadium can be found in the Can Valero industrial zone in north-west Palma, approximately 13 kilometers away from the airport and only three kilometers away from the city center. From Palma’s urban motorway, the Via de Cintura, one may have a good view of it. The stadium was constructed for the 1999 Summer Universiade and had previously been known as the Son Moix Stadium (Catalan: Estadi de Son Moix, Spanish: Estadio de Son Moix), the Iberostar Stadium (Catalan: Iberostar Estadi), and the Ono Estadi. In 1999, RCD Mallorca was successful in negotiating an agreement with the municipal government to replace its previous stadium, Estadio Llu’s Sitjar, with this one and use it for the following fifty years.

The spectator capacity of the stadium is 23,142, making it the largest venue of its kind on any of the Balearic Islands.

It is designed in the form of a bowl, and two of the stands each include two levels. The stadium was planned so that it could accommodate future development on either end, eventually leading to the creation of a completely two-tiered stadium with a capacity of more than 40,000 people. As will be demonstrated further below, these plans appear improbable at this point. On the athletics track, there is occasionally a small temporary stand that is placed; this stand can be removed before the athletics competition begins.

Visit Mallorca Estadi – stadium description

Why was a new stadium built in palma de mallorca.

After Palma de Mallorca was awarded the 1999 Summer Universiade, the municipality decided to build a new, multi-purpose venue to be the main arena of the competition. The new stadium was built about 3 km north-west of the city centre, within an existing sports complex which also includes pitches, tennis courts, cycling track and an indoor arena linked to a swimming pool. The opening ceremony of the Universiade, which took place on 3rd July 1999, was also the inauguration of the stadium.

Who became the host of the new stadium in Palma de Mallorca?

At the turn of the century, RCD Mallorca enjoyed its best ever season (including reaching the final of the Cup Winners' Cup in 1998/99). While still under construction, the club signed a lease for a new stadium and moved from the aging Estadio Lluís Sitjar in the summer of 1999.

The team's first home game in the new arena was on 21st August 1999, when they were beaten 1-2 by Real Madrid in a league encounter. The creation of a new, large stadium in the city was to the club's benefit, although the existence of an athletics track and the resulting distance between the stands and the pitch was seen as a drawback from the start.

What were the names of the RCD Mallorca stadium?

The arena was originally known as Estadi de Son Moix. From 2004 to 2010, due to a sponsorship deal, the venue was called ONO Estadi and from 2010 to 2017 Iberostar Estadi. It reached another deal in 2020, when it was renamed Visit Mallorca Estadi.

What did the stadium in Palma de Mallorca originally look like?

The facility in its original layout was a multi-purpose stadium, with an athletics track. The running track was surrounded by a ring of stands, and along the pitch the auditorium was much higher. The west stand was fitted with a canopy that covered the upper rows. The capacity of the venue was 23,142 spectators.

How Visit Mallorca Estadi compares to other LaLiga stadiums?

What changes have been made to the stadium in Palma de Mallorca?

During the 2012/13 season, additional temporary rows of stands were added to the west stand, bringing the audience closer to the pitch. In late 2015, meanwhile, a temporary stand was opened behind the north goal, located along the end line of the pitch and interfering with the athletics track.

The temporary metal structure, called Grada Lluís Sitjar, existed until the major redevelopment of 2022–2024. At the start of the redevelopment, it was moved to the south side, where it was still in use throughout the 2022/23 season, before being removed.

When did the biggest redevelopment of the stadium in Palma de Mallorca take place?

As the venue did not host many athletics events and the main user was the football team, a possible redevelopment of the Estadi de Son Moix to remove the running track and turn it into a football-specific venue had been discussed for some time. Work finally started in May 2022, with the redevelopment being carried out in stages and completed in early 2024.

For coverage of the redevelopment of the stadium in Palma de Mallorca , see the separate subpage

What did the 2022–2024 redevelopment of the stadium in Palma de Mallorca include?

As part of the redevelopment, the running track was removed and the lower level of the stands was reconstructed, taking on a rectangular shape and bringing it much closer to the pitch. A roof was erected over the east stand, similar to the one on the opposite side, and a VIP pavilion was built over the stand behind the north goal. The capacity of the stadium after modernisation increased by approximately 3,000 seats to 26,020 spectators.

The architectural concept for the redevelopment of the stadium in Palma de Mallorca can be viewed on a separate subpage

When was the stadium in Palma de Mallorca inaugurated after the 2022–2024 redevelopment?

Although the venue remained functional during the redevelopment and RCD Mallorca continued to play their matches there, the opening of all the new stands was marked by a special ceremony that took place on January 13, 2024, on the occasion of the Primera División match against Celta Vigo (1–1).

What does RCD Mallorca's stadium look like?

Following the 2022–2024 redevelopment, the stadium has a football-specific layout of the stands, although much of its previous oval form can still be seen, especially as the upper sections of the stands along the pitch have been fully retained. The auditorium is equipped with red folding seats and the capacity of the venue is 26,020 spectators.

The main stand is located on the west side. The stands along the pitch have a canopy covering the upper sections. There are floodlights under the roof, as well as on four masts standing behind the corners.

The stands behind the goals (north and south) consist of only the lower level and are significantly lower. A VIP pavilion was additionally built over the north stand. The south stand (known as L'Infer 1916) is dedicated to RCD Mallorca's most ardent supporters.

The new Visit Mallorca Estadi: A new philosophy and business development plan for RCD Mallorca’s stadium

  • The Balearic club are carrying out an extensive redevelopment of their stadium, which is scheduled for completion in January of 2024.
  • The investment consists of improved facilities, modern stands that are closer to the pitch and new seats with more covered seating, plus new experiential and hospitality areas which, together with an overall improvement in food and beverage sales, will boost matchday revenues.
  • Furthermore, the stadium can be brought to life on other days throughout the year thanks to additional business and cultural events that will further increase the level of business.

Ever since the group of North American shareholders assumed a controlling stake in RCD Mallorca six years ago, the Balearic club has been undergoing a process of stabilisation and restructuring at all levels. Following this period, Alfonso Díaz, the club's business director, believes that “the time has now come to accelerate growth with a three-year investment plan, both for the football and the business departments”.

“We are aware that LaLiga clubs improving their facilities is a way to grow as a whole, based on,” stated Díaz, discussing the importance of infrastructure renovation. “One of our main investments in infrastructure is with the stadium, which has to be one of the pillars to make this club grow both on a sporting and a business level. We hope that the new stadium will help to generate the best atmosphere and that, in turn, this can push the team towards better sporting results and that it can generate new revenue to help us reach the next level.”

Giving the stadium a new lease of life

The redevelopment work at the Visit Mallorca Estadi, which consists of four phases and which is expected to be completed in January 2024, will bring about an almost complete change of the facility and its philosophy. The director explained: “We’re really talking about a new stadium, one with spaces that didn't exist until now and that will give the facility a new lease of life. The capacity of the stadium is always a big talking point, but we’ve kept the number of seats very similar to what it was in the past, moving from 23,000 to 25,000 while always leaving the door open to the possibility of increasing this further in the future, even though we believe this capacity is adequate.”

The project includes the creation of a new lower tier at the level of the turf and around the entire pitch, connecting with the existing upper tiers. “This will officially remove the athletics track, which had been in disuse for several years, while we have the commitment of the Palma City Council to build a new track close to the stadium,” he added.

The fans will now be just 7.7 metres away from the pitch, compared to the distances of 23 to 45 metres that they were separated by previously. In addition, there will be a complete change of all the seats in the stadium to improve the comfort for the supporters, while a new roof will be installed on the east stand to protect around 6,000 more fans from the sun and rain. Meanwhile, the north stand will become the heart and soul of the stadium, with a new entrance behind which a new hospitality area and terrace will be built, boasting unique views of Mallorca’s Serra de Tramuntana mountain range.

According to the RCD Mallorca business director, there will also be a restaurant at the stadium operating every day of the week. There will be a new ticketing office and new official club store too. Plus, “in the main stand there will be a new hospitality area overlooking the pitch with a concept and experience that is hard to beat on matchday”. The space created behind the new stand on the south side will be used for events and will be a place where families can enjoy the stadium and its views on a day-to-day basis. Another new feature will be the improvement to the lighting throughout the stadium, which will be brought up to the modern standard of environmentally friendly LED lighting.

Beyond all the benefits this project will bring to the club, this is also a project designed by and for the city. On this, Díaz commented: “We want the new stadium to have spaces open to the city and without a barrier preventing access. In this space, there will be squares that will be open and accessible to citizens and families: an outdoor one at street level and an indoor one at one of the ends. Both spaces can be used for multiple sports, while there will be restaurants and amenities for citizens. It should become a cultural reference point in the city, with cultural events, concerts and much more taking place.”

A matter of utmost importance for the club has been the environmental friendliness of the facility, which they want to be integrated into the city's surroundings and be dependent on natural resources. A good example of this is seen through the two large water tanks that will collect rainwater to irrigate the pitch. Furthermore, the entire first phase of the project has consisted of reusing materials from the existing structure and of recycling the old seats.

Improving the fan experience through technology

Díaz is clear that the fan experience in the stadium should be improved by embracing technology, which is why RCD Mallorca have already started implementing a digital season ticket, eliminating the plastic card as part of their environmental responsibility efforts. Díaz continued: “We’re working to have a cashless stadium, where spectators can order food and drink through their mobile phones. Connectivity is one of our priorities so that the fan, stadium and club can interact via a customised app.”

He continued: “We’ll have new giant screens at both ends of the stadium to improve the experience and we’ll ensure it continues to get better through elements such as the Kiss Cam, new graphics and better real-time match information for the fans, so they know what is happening in the game. We will also have a new control centre from which all the technological part of the stadium will be managed.”

Finally, Díaz stressed that the stadium should become a site capable of bringing in new revenue every day of the year, so that the club “can grow and have more resources for the football area, as this will allow us to invest more in players and grassroots football”. As well as working to increase revenue on matchdays, those at the club also want to boost the volume of business across the rest of the year by improving the stadium tour experience and by hosting other business, cultural and concert events.

RCD Mallorca continue to make progress on the remodelling of their stadium. The club will continue to work on the north end of the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix to make changes that will boost the institution’s income and improve the experience for fans.

The work on the stadium began a few months ago and involves an almost complete overhaul of the facility and its philosophy.

The club explained:

We are really talking about a new stadium with spaces that didn’t exist until now, and which will give the facility a new lease of life.

Alfonso Díaz , the CEO of Business at RCD Mallorca , spoke to the club’s media about how this specific section of the venue will play an important role for both the club and the city:

I think the North End will be the heart of the whole project, both for football, which is obviously the main part of the project, and also for the city. We are opening the stadium to the city to provide services, to offer many leisure options.

In the same vein, the mayor of Palma, José Hila , highlighted the importance of opening the stadium up to the city:

These are very important works both for RCD Mallorca and for the city. For RCD Mallorca, because there has long been a demand from the fans to be moved closer to the action. It is also very important for the city: opening the stadium to it, eliminating all the barriers around it and with activities all day long. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.

At the north end of the  Estadi Mallorca Son Moix , where the remodelling phase is scheduled to be completed by the start of next season, there will be capacity for 3,000 spectators and the first row will now be just 7.5 metres away from the pitch.

ALSD International 2023  is being hosted at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, October 9-10. O ptimising revenue through New Builds, Renovations & Service  Expansions is the  key focus of this industry-leading event, with architecture & design, fan experience, hospitality, premium seating, sustainability and technology taking centre stage.

Outside the stadium, there will be green areas, large open spaces and squares for citizens and families, as well as multi-sports areas, restaurants and various other services.

Díaz recently welcomed coaches Javier Aguirre, Toni Amor and Pol Lorente as well as club captains Abdón Prats and Antonio Raíllo for an update on the stadium redevelopment.

Regarding the latest advances, Díaz  highlighted that the planned construction deadlines are being met and that, in addition to this, phase three of the West Stand has already begun:

The intention was to share with the coaching staff and the players, who, although they are already informed on a daily basis, we wanted them to step on and be on the pitch. To see where we are, to explain to them where we are going in this growth plan of looking forward and a firm commitment to continue growing. At the end, I also conveyed to them that thanks to all of us who are part of the club we have managed to be where we are today. They have been a very important part with their effort, their work, their commitment and it has led us to think about reforming this stadium. The idea is that both the North Stand and the West Stand will be finished and can be opened to the public for the first league match of next season. It is our objective and we are on schedule for the moment, and let’s see if we can achieve it.  It will be a great step forward. And the goal of the West Stand, just like we did with the East Stand, is to bring the fans closer to the field. To get back to being close to the action and close to the football. The players will also feel the fans very close. It will be a great step for the club and for what we will experience at the stadium.

Boost LaLiga and the importance of upgrading facilities

RCD Mallorca, as their CEO of Business explained, embraced the Boost LaLiga project “aware that improving the facilities of LaLiga clubs is a commitment to growing as a whole, based on the improvement of each member”. He added: “One of the main investments in infrastructure is the stadium, which must be one of the pillars to make this club grow both on a sporting and business level.”

In this way, RCD Mallorca are improving their infrastructure and opening up new business channels to improve their services, to offer a quality plan to the city of Palma and to provide greater comfort for all fans when they experience football. With all this, the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix is becoming a stadium that can be used 365 days per year.
