eco safari drenthe

  • ‘In 1 woord geweldig.

Puur Drenthe: Een leuke kindvriendelijke B&B in Midden-Drenthe

Empowering Communities and Protecting Wildlife: The Transformational Journey of Eco-Conscious Travel with Nkuringo Safaris

eco safari drenthe

Deep and meaningful travel, which connects travelers with local communities, teaches them about local cultures and provides authentic experiences, is set to be a key trend this year, Forbes shares.

In fact, over two-thirds (69%) of tourists want the money they spend on travel to go back to local communities, reveals Booking.com’s Sustainable Travel Report.

But despite this growing popularity, two in five admit they don’t know how or where to find tours and activities that give back to the local community. What’s more, many travel experiences that pose as being regenerative have a destructive impact on local communities.

Lydia Eva Mpanga, Founder of Nkuringo Safaris , says: “Some travel opportunities inadvertently exploit indigenous cultures and prioritize tourist leisure over the well-being of local communities. Take, for example, accommodations that bring crowds of wealthy tourists over to impoverished rural areas, just to have them sip cocktails by the sunset when locals are forced to travel hundreds of kilometers just for clean drinking water.

“On the flip side, working on the ground in Uganda and Rwanda, we’ve witnessed firsthand how impactful meaningful travel can be. It can be incredibly rewarding for travelers while also uplifting and empowering local communities. It’s all about doing your research and selecting destinations that truly benefit those who live there.”

eco safari drenthe

Nkuringo Safaris has an incredible property owned by a local Ugandan family that is located above the jungle canopies of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and offers the ultimate regenerative stay for eco-conscious travelers.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is one of the first carbon carbon-neutral certified properties in Uganda and lies perched on Nteko Ridge at an altitude of 7000 ft, overlooking a dense rainforest and chain of volcanoes home to the only remaining mountain gorillas in the world.

It provides an excellent base for those looking to venture out and track these mighty apes , with everyone who does so paying a sum to support their conservation.

Beyond its commitment to sustainability and wildlife, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge supports local children through its Nkuringo Junior Stars Program.

The initiative particularly focuses on helping girls stay in school as just half (53%) of female students complete the compulsory first seven years of education, according to research, primarily due to poverty. Impoverished families often require their daughters to stay at home and help with the housework or other income-generating activities.

Through Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge’s fair trade policy, the lodge sponsors local parents through guiding training courses that provide them with skills that enable them to earn a sustainable salary to raise their children, without them having to drop out of school.

The lodge also supports the Nkuringo Crafts Project, an initiative aimed at equipping young people with skills in crafting handmade items such as carvings, paintings, baskets, and jewelry, by selling their beautiful creations in its gift shop.

eco safari drenthe

In addition, the property has a Pack for Purpose program in place that encourages guests to carry a small gift in their luggage for low-income families living in nearby villages.

Travelers can find the Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge hidden amongst forest trees, flowers and shrubs, on the southern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The accommodation offers 18 rooms in 16 residences with full amenities divided into 2 two-bedroom family villas, 5 Luxury Forest Suites, 6 garden cottages, and 3 Standard Garden Cottages.

Despite Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge’s impressive commitment to sustainability and nature, it’s the landscape that does the talking at this accommodation. Every room boasts breathtaking views over the imposing Bwindi Forest, and the garden chalets soar above the Virunga Mountains range, while rickety walkways lead guests around the property.

The luxury cottages are completely eco-friendly and were built using locally sourced materials.

Papyrus and volcanic rock have been used to make the ceiling and wooden floors, while corrugated iron sheets support the rainwater catchment, providing the lodge’s primary water source. Unused, excess water is then distributed throughout the local community.

Light and heating at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge are entirely powered by solar energy. The accommodation also has an onsite vegetable garden that supplies the kitchen and a tree-planting program that encourages every guest to “plant a tree” in its beautifully maintained gardens.

The cottages themselves showcase locally-styled furnishings, spacious rooms and an abundance of natural light. They are also complete with private viewing decks with 360-degree views over the volcanoes and forest canopy below.

Guests can choose between luxury forest suites and family villas, each of which boasts complete privacy and overlooks the jungle. Beyond gorilla trekking, guests can visit local communities, go hiking through the impenetrable forest and drift along the gentle waters of Lake Mutanda on a canoe.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is a seven-time winner at the World Travel Awards (WTA) as Uganda’s Leading Safari Lodge and TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards since 2015.

Nkuringo Safaris is a licensed tour operator that offers unforgettable, safe, intimate, and authentic Uganda and Rwanda wildlife experiences. The company customizes gorilla trekking tours, honeymoon holidays, cultural encounters, and private and group adventures to fit travelers’ preferences.

highly recommend company

Back froum our 11 day trip we can only give the best recommendations for Eco Adventure Safari. The planning was relatively short-term and thanks to Patrick Atalyeba, the boss, everything was possible. He answered all questions and responded to all requests immediately. Many many thanks. In Rwanda we were guided by our driverJackson for 2 days - he was very helpful and attentive. We had a lot of fun with him. Patrick Kataama become our new driver/guide at the boarder to Uganda. He made the trip an unforgettable experience for us! He was so motivated and explained and showed us so much. He fulfilled all of our wishes - a thousand thanks to him too! Conclusion: We can highly recommend both Patricks and Jackson - and therefore the entire company. Rwanda and Uganda are really worth a trip! Go for it!

Great tour guide!!!

Did a trip with a friend and Eco Adventure Safaris was fantastic from the get go. Patrick provided plenty of detail and created a tailored itinerary for our tour in Rwanda to include a safari in Akagera, Gorilla and golden monkey tour in Volcano National Park and chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe. Communication was clear and our guide Elias was absolutely amazing. Always on time and took great pains to make sure we were always comfortable and having a wonderful time. He was always keen to show us the best parts of Rwandan culture and introduced us to some fantastic dishes and banana beer! This is a great tour company and they clearly try to give their guests the best time visiting their country. Elias told us they do tours all over East Africa and next time we are back we will be sure to get in touch!

Wonderful Bwindi Gorilla trekking trip

I had a wonderful trip to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to trek Gorillas. Patrick was very responsive and quickly answered all my questions. Even though I was very last minute, he could arrange the entire trip (this might also be because of low season). Allan my driver was amazing! He was very kind and a skilled driver (necessary with Ugandan traffic and roads). He also explained a lot about the country, the gorillas and the birds. On the way back he pointed out all the birds! (For a birdwatcher this is splendid!). We also had nice conversations about many different topics. As a solo female traveler, I felt absolutely safe and taken care of. We also stayed in a wonderful lodge (Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge), also highly recommended. When I come back, I will definitely arrange my trips through eco adventure Safaris (and ask for Allan).

Local company, very well connected in Uganda and Rwanda

We had a great experience with Eco Adventure Safaris! Patrick is very professional and swiftly organised for us the trip in Uganda and Rwanda and answered to all our emails and questions. Abdul, our driver and guide was excellent, everything ran smoothly and he was very flexible in accommodating our requests during the trip so as to make the maximum out of the experience. We particularly liked that this is a local Uganda based company and they are very well connected in both Uganda and Rwanda.

Amazing gorillas experience

Eco Adventure Safaris made a great job! They were flexible with all our wishes and ideas. Excellent communication and very quick respond. Our holidays were perfect. Everything planed very well. Our guide was a great, kind and friendly man. Uganda and Rwanda are beautiful countries with breathtaking nature. We have unforgettable memories and amazing experience with gorillas. I hope, one day, we can come back.

Great company for doing a gorilla trek

We booked a short gorilla trek with Eco Adventures in Uganda (with pick up in Rwanda). Patrick was very responsive and and communicated very clearly which made the whole experience relaxed and easy. Our guide, Godfrey, was very attentive, knowledgeable and really prioritized the highest quality service. The vehicle was great, the hotel they arranged was great and we had a great time

Custom Chimpanzee Trekking Tour (4 days, 2 persons)

We had a wonderful experience with Eco Adventure Safari. The trip was coordinated by Patrick, who always answered back super quick and was able to fulfil all our wishes. He was able to arrange pick-up in Kigali, Rwanda, by our guide Martin. From there we drove to Queen Elizabeth National Park, stayed there for a night in a fantastic hotel, then had a game drive and boat tour, then moved on to Kibale Forest National Park for a 2 night stay. There we had the chimp trekking and a village tour. From there we Martin took us to our hotel in Entebbe. The whole trip took place in early November, aka the small rainy season. We were generally lucky with the weather, but in any case it’s a great time to visit as everything is green. All the accommodation in this trip was simply excellent, Martin was a very knowledgeable guide and great driver. We had a great time on this trip, they accommodated all of our wishes (like seeing the tea fields, getting a Ugandan sim card, …) and Martin was fun to be around. Would definitely recommend, value-for-money is great.

Incredible 5-day tour!

I just finished a 5-day gorilla and chimpanzee trekking tour with Eco Adventure Safaris, and loved every minute of it! My guide, Alex, was very professional and knowledgeable, and Patrick, who I booked the tour with, was very helpful and timely in his responses to my questions. I'd highly recommend this tour to anyone planning a trip to Uganda!

3 day fly in gorilla trekking

We did a quick fly in 3 day gorilla trek from Kampala! Patrick was wonderful in planning everything to our specific details and our drivers and guides were wonderful and always willing to help! He even made sure we could pay with credit cards. The short flights really helped us maximize our time in Bwindi and Patrick checked in on us throughout the weekend to ensure everything was going smoothly. It was an unforgettable trip with an amazing time spent with a gorilla family on the hike. Highly recommend Eco Adventure Safaris!!!

The gorilla trekking with Eco Adventure…

The gorilla trekking with Eco Adventure safari was awesome, specially with our wonderful driver Abdul! We got to see a family of gorillas just close to us, and amazing experience. It was all very well organized, we depart Kigali one day before, slept at the beautiful Rushaga Gorillas Heaven Lodge, and the day after went for the trekking! Thank you so much Patrick and Abdul

Great safari and tour across Uganda and Rwanda

We did the 12 days-safari and apes trekking across Uganda and Rwanda during Christmas and NY's time 2023-2024. Our trip was fully customized and designed for our needs and travel tastes from the very beginning. The communication with Patrick, the manager, was super fluid and I always got quick responses from his side. The driver and guide, Alex, was a great companion during the whole trip. He made our trip unforgettable. He provided us with interesting information about Ugandan & Rwandan culture, their people and wildlife. He was always taking care of all the family and pending on how to make our trip even more comfortable and entertaining. Additionally, he was always open to our requests. As for the truck/car, this was comfortable, with plenty of space for the four of us. We opted for the most economic options of hotels and most of them met our expectations. They are all eco-lodges and use renewable energies to power the installations and local ingredients for preparing the meals. I'd like to give a special mention to the Kasenyi Safari Camp, where we had a super pleasant stay. Perhaps, the only suggestion for some of the lodges is that they should have a wider variety of alcoholic beverages. I would definitely recommend Eco Adventure Safaris and Alex as guide. Uganda and Rwanda have a lot to discover.

I am a frequent traveler

I am a frequent traveler, but 1st time traveling to East Africa. I booked eight-day trips covering Kenya - Nairobi & Masai Mara, Burundi, DR Congo - Gorilla Trekking, Rwanda, and Uganda—a solo trip covering five countries in 8 days. Patrick, who organized my trip at Eco Adventure, was very good at answering my questions and accommodating my requests whenever I requested. Tour guides Mr. Moses at Nairobi, and Mr. Alfred at Masai Mara were also excellent. They made me feel comfortable and safe. The best part of my trip was Mr. Patrick( Tour guide), with whom I was for four days from Bujumbura, Burundi, Bukavu - DR Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda all on the road. He was an excellent driver and experienced tour guide. He made me feel safe, especially while traveling in Burundi and Congo. Overall, it was a flawless trip, and I would recommend the Eco safari adventure to my friends and family. Thank you for making it a memorable trip.

Great communications, great integrity, great price, exceeded expectations.

They are prompt, flexible, and trustworthy communicators, accept credit cards, and matched the price of a cheaper outfit with fewer (albeit good) reviews. And, with a little negotiation, tacked on more experiences at what was probably nearly cost for them. With me paying the permit fees. And the one time where we miscommunicated (Can you tell I'm a bit wordy ;) my driver/guide used his familiarity with the park and personnel to get the experience for me on the fly. With me paying afterwards. Also, I had said budget bottom dollar anything short of directly on the ground or even that if there was a pad. To me what we had was gorgeous and luxurious. At a rock bottom price.

16 Days Uganda -> Chimpanzee | Mt. Stanley | Gorillas

The whole trip was perfectly organized by EcoAdventures, starting and ending at Entebbe airport. Also, a big thank you to Patrick, who always answered very quickly and helped in problematic situations! About the trip itself, I can say that visiting the chimpanzees and gorillas is a great experience that I can recommend to everyone. If you have to choose, I recommend the gorillas ;-) We also climbed Margherita Peak on Mt. Stanley. The rainy season started a bit earlier than expected this year, so it rained every day, which sometimes eats away at motivation. I recommend doing this climb in 10 days so you have enough time to acclimate and climb a few more peaks. Below are some points to know: - once you have the visa, you must enter Uganda within 3 months, otherwise the visa will be cancelled - more information about the tips for climbing Rwenzori (porters, guides) and especially how many porters will help you All the best for you

Trust worthy, honest, above and beyond service. Amazing Gorilla Trek!

We did a 2-day return trip from Kigali to Bwindi to see the beautiful mountain gorillas in Uganda. We had some flight delays and Patrick was extremely responsive and amazing working around our delays. Godfrey was our guide, and he was amazing. He is very calm, knowledgeable, and fun. Although our trip to Rwanda and Uganda was quick, we feel like we had a good "taste" of these countries and it has left us wanting to return soon. The Gorilla trek was an experience of a lifetime and we found the people of these countries were lovely, warm and kind. So thrilled we fit in this excursion on our way to South Africa from Canada. Please don't ever hesitate to book with Eco Adventure Safaris. Food, accommodation and experience were all a 10/10, they go above and beyond and the value was exceptional.

Gorilla Trek Permits - Great Experience

We had a great experience booking our gorilla trek permits from Eco Adventure Safaris! We needed them relatively last minute (~9 days prior) and wanted to use credit card and they were able to provide both of those. Would recommend!

Go Wild! 10 Very Different Eco Safaris In Africa

eco safari drenthe

Eco safaris in Africa are NOT all alike! We’ve found ten very different ones – there’s definitely something here you’ll love!

By Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi

Here’s an interesting fact for you: the word safari comes from the Arabic word safara , meaning ‘a journey.’ The word was later adapted to the Swahili verb kusafiri which means ‘to travel’ and eventually morphed into the noun safari .

During the colonial era, this word was (tragically) associated with hunting big game – to the point of extinction, in some cases. Perhaps one of the most notorious fans of the safari at the time was US President Teddy Roosevelt, who embarked on a safari of enormous proportions , ostensibly with the aim of filling the Smithsonian Institute with African specimens. His party slaughtered 11,400 animals in total, and contributed to the extinction of the rare white rhino.

Today, thankfully, the negative hunting connotations of the word ‘safari’ are being rapidly replaced by more modern notions of socially and environmentally responsible travel . Safaris now typically imply that the journey will include game viewing and some time spent in wilderness areas like game reserves and national parks, and game viewing is not the only activity: admiring other forms of wildlife, flora and birds in the wild, along with a host of other adventures are all part of the safari experience now.

The best part of these holidays is possibly the fact that they benefit the wildlife and people of Africa by supporting local conservation efforts, wildlife sanctuaries and local businesses. As opposed to shooting them with guns, tourists now shoot animals with cameras, and make a difference in protecting various species. Safari companies almost always either actively contribute towards conservation projects or help generate tourism revenue which is used to manage wildlife projects and game reserves.

Intrigued? Here, we’ve found 10 very different eco safaris in Africa – there’s surely one that will inspire you to take one of these life-changing holidays.

10 Different Kinds of African Safaris

1. wilderness safari: abu camp, botswana.

An exceptional destination for a safari is Botswana, and Abu Camp has received worldwide recognition from travellers. This special place allows you to plunge yourself in the very heart of Southern Africa, getting so close to elephants you practically become a member of their herd – but there are plenty of other animals to discover, too.

With this splendid safari, you will see the pristine ecosystem through the mammals’ eyes, while residing in one of the six exclusive suites that can accommodate up to a maximum of twelve guests. Each guest room stylishly blends its surroundings with a sustainably chic interior design: every tent has an outdoor copper bathtub that’s nothing short of wonderful when you’re soaking in it, under the stars. This one of a kind vacation allows humans to reconnect with the wilderness, whilst respecting the habitat and its inhabitants.

2. Great Plains Safaris: ol Donyo Lodge

If Ernest Hemingway could choose an African holiday (again), he’d probably select the masculinely decorated Great Plains Safari. This place boasts the conservation of our wilderness, wildlife and the communities that surround us as its core mission. This most inspirational of camps is called ol Donyo Lodge , set in the Chyulu Hills of Kenya, where you will be overwhelmed by the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here, you will have the chance to enjoy the safari experience with your entire family: unlike many safaris, children from five and up are welcome.

During this extraordinary safari, located on the private Mbirikani Ranch in south-eastern Kenya between Tsavo East and Amboseli National Parks, you may engage in a variety of activities. Mountain biking, tracking, fly camping, and wildlife viewing can be enjoyed during the daytime, along with visiting local villages and markets, allowing you to directly interact with the local Masai people.

3. Asilia Africa: Matemwe Lodge, Zanzibar

Critically Acclaimed Asilia Africa has won countless accolades for their approach to safaris in East Africa. Their most mind-boggling of safari holidays is undoubtedly the Matemwe Lodge in Zanzibar. This little piece of heaven will allow you to easily absorb the marine beauties, either by lazily lying on your hammock or energetically diving into the depths of the Indian Ocean.

Matemwe Lodge provides a dozen beach-chic chalets across the island, each with a sea-facing veranda. Guests will be able to relax in a peaceful location, alternating the seashore with the spa and swimming pool and explore the surroundings, visiting community villages and sailing on dhow vessels.

4. Guided Safaris: The Royal Malewane Lodge

Not keen on holiday planning? No worries. Guided Safaris offers exquisite luxury programs that include roundtrip flights to safari areas, high living accommodation, meals and amenities. If you want to opt for the most luxurious of safari options, The Royal Guided Safari will be just your cup of tea. It will take you to the Royal Malewane Lodge, set in a private 30,000-acre reserve that has welcomed a number of A-list travellers, pampering them with the best delights in life, such as fine wine and cuisine, as well as highly privileged views of wildlife and nature.

The adventures you will embark upon in South Africa embrace Jules Verne-sque hot air balloon trips and James Bond helicopter flights over the Blyde River canyon. Professional guides will get you up close and personal with hundred species of mammals including the famous Big Five (lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards and rhinos).

5. Sosian: The Safari Lodge, Kenya

Sosian provides a unique exposure to the benefits of ecotourism, ensuring that our impact on the environment is limited and raising awareness on the cultural heritage of local communities. The Safari Lodge gives you the feeling of having jumped into a time machine and moved back to the forties, since that is when the ranch was built by Italians, and that decor is chicly still present today.

This safari experience gives you an unconventional taste of Kenya, through the Laikipia Plateau, which is not a national park or reserve but is nonetheless a thriving success story in terms of the conservation of local flora and fauna. While living for a few days in this scenic landscape, which stretches from the Great Rift Valley to Mount Kenya, you’ll be able to test your fishing skills, get closely acquainted to the Samburus and Pokotos tribes, and enjoy the organic garden where Sammy Nganga sustainably grows sumptuous vegetables and fruits.

6. Gorilla Safaris: Bwindi Lodge, Uganda

If you want to truly delve into the Planet of the Apes, Volcanoes Safaris owns and runs four luxury lodges in Africa that are specialised in introducing us to our nearest cousins: mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. For fifteen years, this company has been at the forefront of exceptional luxury gorilla safari holidays in Uganda and Rwanda.

One of the most recommended eco safaris in Africa for seeing primates is the one offered by Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. N estled in the Impenetrable Forest , their eight luxurious bandas are well positioned to allow you to have a close look at the wildlife of the area. After a demanding and surely emotionally fulfilling day of gorilla trekking, hiking through forests and swimming in waterfalls, you can treat yourself to a relaxing massage. Furthermore, the sustainability of this safari is not merely environmental but also social – the tour operators support the Orphanage Dance Group and the Bwindi Community Hospital.

7. Abercrombie & Kent: The Great Migration

The distinguishing hallmark of Abercrombie & Kent is their approach in combining singular service with insider-access opportunities unlike any you have experienced before. Of all the eco safaris in Africa, this one gives you the best access to seeing t he Great Migration of animals . During this incredible holiday adventure, you’ll be accommodated in the best boutique camps and luxury safari lodges, experiencing three nights in Serengeti and three in Masai Mara.

To help them truly understand this part of Africa, travellers will visit the Amboseli Elephant Research Project and meet a Maasai elder to learn about local culture and traditions. The voyage is enriched by riding a tuk-tuk (the auto rickshaws used in the area) and stopping to a Tanzanian village to fully delve into the local daily life, exploring the regional market and tasting the delights of the local cuisine.

8. Nyanja Safaris: Ornithology Safari

Nyanja Safaris offers a conscious alternative to mass tourism, tailoring eco-safaris with unique itineraries for individuals, families and special interest groups. If you want to try a safari that is out of the ordinary, try the Ornithology option, which allows you to discover the myriad birdlife in enchanting Zambia.

You’ll get acquainted with the African Fish Eagle (which is part of the national flag) and encounter hundreds of descendants of avian dinosaurs, including some endangered fowl recognized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature , like the Shoebill Stork, Wattled Crane and Slaty Egret . Travellers are accommodated in Africa’s best luxury lodges, remote bush camps and little known destinations uncharted by the average tourist, all guided by wildlife expert David Bland who has organised these safaris since the early eighties.

9. Rainbow Tours: Madagascar Reef & Rainforest

If you’re seeking a mind-blowingly beautiful experience into the wild, the Madagascar Reef & Rainforest safari coalesces discovery with leisure. During your trip, you’ll enjoy the wilderness of the rainforest in a stupendous eco hotel, situated on the reef-protected beach of the tropical Ile Ste Marie. As you explore the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, you’ll be amazed by a multitude of unusual creatures, especially reptiles and birds.

When you indulge in your relaxation on the beach, be aware that your place of accommodation, the Princesse Bora Lodge & Spa, is also an important place of research for the protection of marine mammals. During the summertime this is the place to be to do some whale-watching from an eco-friendly boat.

10. Game Watcher’s Safaris: Porini Lion Camp

Lion lovers, your little piece of Paradise awaits you at the Porini Lion Camp ! Gamewatchers Safaris has been active in Kenya since 1989, offering a variety of luxury safaris. These lodges in the African wilderness are environmentally friendly and the offered activities engage with the empowerment of local communities.

Ok, now let’s talk about the Lion Camp . This is an award-winning resort that offers the extraordinary opportunity of taking guided walks with Maasai Warriors and experiencing day and night game drives within the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, where you will approach these majestic felines at various stages of their daily behaviour through an unsurpassed game-viewing experience. But if you’re not fully obsessed by lions, never fear: other members of the Big Five group can also be seen at this place, which is one of te most visited eco safaris in Africa.

We planned to just venture through the park on our own but decided to book a tour instead. So happy we did. Pete, our guide, was a wealth of knowledge and so passionate about this unique habitat. It was also very convenient and professional. Rather than just "look" at the Everglades, I felt like we got to "experience " the Everglades. Book with confidence.

Outstanding day with Ben! He was loaded with knowledge for the entire day. Alligators, birds, Ecosystems, Ben even had a bird checklist of 70 different varieties, We found 28 of those on the list.

We took this tour on our honeymoon, and it was one of our more memorable experiences! The tour guide was absolutely the best there is. We visited so many wonderful locations you would never know were there unless you lived here. My wife and I learned a lot. We're really glad we took this trip, and highly recommend it for anyone else who enjoys nature.
