10 DIY RV Deck Ideas: Plans For Building a Deck Off a Camper

Who says you can have a travel trailer like a home? There are ways to improve your stationary travel trailer so that you can feel more like it is a home and not a trailer. Building a deck or two is just one option to create a nice homey feel to your seasonal home away from home.

There are many plans you can use to build a nice simple deck next to your travel trailer. The simplest one is to get some pier blocks and some 2 by 4s and build a little raised platform under the door. You can make this simple design any size you want.

To learn more about RV deck ideas and what you can do to spruce up your little area, just continue to read our article. It explores this issue so you have enough ideas to choose from. Building a deck is a lot better than always placing your things on the cold hard ground.

Building a Deck Off a Camper

Building-a-Deck-Off-a-Camper

This is not a bad idea as a good deck gives you a little bit more living space. The first step in this project is to decide on the size and design of the deck. There is an untold number of plans you can use, including creating your own that will make your deck unique.

The next step is deciding on the materials you want to use. The easiest decks to build are wood ones but there are different sizes of lumber to choose between. Plus, you need to decide if you want a railing or not.

The third step is to check the level of the ground you have to work with. You can use uneven ground and all you have to do is lengthen any post supports to keep the deck level all the time.

It is possible to build your deck yourself but getting help is the smart thing to do.

How Much Does It Cost To Build An RV Deck?

The total cost of your deck is influenced by 2 main factors- its size and the materials you are going to use. The purpose of the deck will influence both of those factors. A basic 10 by 10-foot treated pine wood deck can run you about $1000 to $2500 approx.

If you want a more permanent structure, you can go with hardwood and make the deck look very exotic. But that design will run you up to $6000 for the same sized deck. There are ways to cut those costs.

Instead of using pine you can use plywood and save a little or you can gather up some good pallets and use them for free. But the quality of the deck would suffer from those options. Once you decide on the size and the materials, you can then figure out what our specific costs will be. Your region of the country will influence prices somewhat as well.

How Do I Build a Deck For My RV?

How-Do-I-Build-a-Deck-Fo-My-RV

This is not a very difficult question to answer. It is best that you have some carpentry skills and that you know how to measure accurately. The first step will be to prepare the area for the deck.

The biggest hassle you will have is the single door on your trailer. You need to make sure that people are not going in and out while you are working. Have a rule that they are either in or out until you say they can move about more freely.

After you have your design and decide on the materials you want to use, you need to go buy the supplies. Don’t forget to count as you will need deck blocks, wood, screws or nails, and glue. Once you have counted the number of those items you need to add in 10 to 15%.

That is your just-in-case figure as you never know what will happen during construction. It is always best to have extra than not enough of any one item. When all the materials are on site, you follow your plan and start building.

Finding DIY RV Deck Plans

This is also not a difficult task as there is a myriad of do-it-yourself books for building decks. You can go to your local bookstore and pick up a few of them or make a trip to your local library. The latter institution should have quite a few on hand.

Or you can talk to deck builders and see what plans they have available for sale. They may have interesting designs that would suit your trailer and your living style. In addition, you can always search the internet.

There are more plans on that outlet than probably anywhere else. You can make your search in the comfort of your home and take your time.

How Do You Build a Portable Deck?

It is the word portable that may throw everyone but essentially, a portable deck is one that is not permanently attached to the ground or your travel trailer. Portable usually means you can take it with you. In this case, the word refers to having the deck easily detach when you want to use the trailer for a few short weeks at another location.

When you take on this project, everything is about the same as building a permanent deck except you are leaving out those materials that will make the deck permanent. You will need your design, decide on building materials and make sure the area is ready for the deck.

The cheapest way to build a portable deck would be to get some pallets, lay them down on the ground, and then cover those pallets with 3/4 inch plywood (no less than 1/2 inch will do here).

Nail or screw the plywood into the pallets and you are done. It is not a great deck but since you spent so little money, you can always get rid of it when you move.

How To Build a Porch On a Camper

How-To-Build-a-Porch-On-a-Camper

In this project, you will need to decide if you want the porch to be permanent or portable. Either way is okay as you never know when you will want to travel a bit with your trailer. The portable is probably the best design to use.

There is no real difference between the two porches except you can always move the portable option out of your way when you need to. Construction for a porch is the same as any other deck except that porches are generally smaller than decks.

You will always want to keep the wood elevated off the ground so that moisture does not rot them out faster. Pick your design, then your materials, and make sure you have enough space around your trailer door to build the porch.

Construction techniques are all the same no matter what kind of porch or deck you are building. Keep in mind that end grains do not hold so it is always a good idea to have carpenter’s glue on hand to help secure the studs, etc.

Seasonal Campsite Deck Ideas

One idea that will make a great portable deck or porch is to use a trailer frame. You can leave the wheels on if you want to, just block them so that they cannot move until you move the blocks out of the way. Or take the wheels off and put pier blocks underneath for stability.

The frame gives you a strong foundation as well as your design. While decking is basically the same for this option, you can do other little changes that make your deck look different. One person built his deck, then placed a tent on one section.

Another owner used gravel underneath his deck and surrounding area to make the landscaping look prettier. Another person used gravel and 2 by 2 tiles to provide a nice deck for their trailer.

Or you can put a railing and a fence on your deck if you want. That gives you a little space between you and any visitor that may come by. Or you can try using normal household bricks to beautify your area and give you more living space.

You can go cheap and use a simple oriental rug and add a canopy if the weather is not that great. Finally, you can go elaborate, build an enclosed deck to keep the bugs away, and then add a raised section around the back of your trailer.

RV Covered Deck Plans

A covered deck is not going to be portable and it will take a lot of construction knowledge and skill to erect the perfect deck for your living situation. The amount of skill and knowledge you will need will depend on how elaborate you want to get with the design.

We have seen double-decker-covered decks that go above the trailer, two roof covers, one for the deck and one for the trailer and we have seen simple roofs that cover the deck only.

Or if you do not want to spend the time, you can build your deck and use a canopy, tarp, or some other covering that does not involve wood. A good internet search will provide more than enough websites with plans ready to go.

RV Deck On Wheels

RV-Deck-O-Wheels

This is where you get an old trailer frame that is still usable and not rusted out. The flexibility of this option is that you can find a trailer frame in the dimensions you want for your deck, within reason of course.

Once you get the trailer frame, you can use wood for the flooring and then weld a railing and fence into place. These are not very popular but they can be done. It may take a little more work than a wood deck but they are nice since you can create different designs with the metal.

Or, to save you one work, you can always leave the toys off the toy hauler and use that area for your deck.

RV Deck With Ramp

Ramps are better than steps in some situations. They are not hard to put in place as long as you have the space to add the ramp. You are free to design the ramp in almost any shape you need from circular to straight.

The key is to make sure it is wide enough to handle all the items and people using the ramp. Also, you do not need to build a ramp. There are products called roll a ramp that provides pre-built ramps of different lengths and designs that you can attach to your RV or trailer.

The designs include a two-part ramp where one part starts on the ground and stops at a metal porch and then the second part goes from the porch to your RV or trailer. You can also attach them to your deck if you want to save energy.

RV Decks And Stairs

RV-Decks-And-Stairs

Stairs are not easy to build because they take specific and precise measurements to get them just right. The number of stairs you will need will depend on how high your deck is going to go.

Some decks only need one or two stairs, which makes this task simple to do while others need more than 4 which will complicate construction a little bit.

Some Final Words

Building a deck next to your trailer is one way to increase your living space. Plus, it gives you a nice outside spot to sit back and relax after a great day. You can use metal if you want to build your deck but the most popular option is wood.

Wood is easier to work with and looks superior to any metal deck you can build. Just make sure to buy more supplies than you need, just in case.

There’s nothing quite like sitting out on a finished deck on a warm summer evening. If you’re an RVer who resides in your rig seasonally or long-term at an RV park, you can easily add a beautiful deck to your campsite. While it may seem like a lot of work, there are a variety of RV deck build options for amateur DIYers, as well as some pre-purchased options for less handy individuals.

This article will examine the factors you should consider when choosing an RV deck, the various design options available, and even a guide on how to build your own! With that, let’s jump in.

Benefits of Installing an RV Deck

Build your own or purchase one, permanent or removable, cost of an rv deck, accessibility, portable deck, floating deck, covered deck, screened-in porches, adding outdoor furniture to your rv deck, rv decks with a grill or smoker, 1. grade the landscape, 2. lay concrete pier blocks, 3. add piers and joists, 4. install the decking boards, 5. add finishes steps, ramps, and banisters, 6. stain and weathercoat, conclusion: enjoy rv life with a new deck.

Adding a nice deck to your RV is an amazing way to enhance your lifestyle. Some benefits include:

  • Extends Your Living Space: Adding a deck can add some serious square footage to your rig, essentially adding an entirely new room!
  • Looks Awesome: Your neighbors will gawk at your setup once you’ve installed a full-sized porch onto your RV.
  • You Can Relax Outside: Add some deck furniture and you can kick back and relax, all while taking in some fresh air.

Things to Consider When Choosing Your Deck

Before you jump head first into an RV deck, there’s a variety of considerations you’ll need to make. Let’s look at some of the most important factors involved in your deck decision.

Deciding whether or not you’d like to build your own RV deck is the first decision you need to make. If you’re handy enough, constructing your own deck is a straightforward and rewarding process. Alternatively, you can also enlist the help of some people experienced in carpentry.

If you’re not looking to put in much work, you can choose to purchase a portable folding RV deck or come up with a solution that doesn’t require advanced woodworking skills.

Top Travel Trailer and RV Deck Ideas + How to Build Your Own 2

Deciding on a permanent RV deck or removable one is entirely dependent on the way you RV. If you own your own camp, installing a permanently fixed deck is the way to go. If you keep your RV at a campground seasonally or reside at an RV park, this option can also work but be sure to check the policies of the establishment you’re staying at.

If your RV park or campground doesn’t allow permanent porches, investing in a portable deck that can be easily removed is the best option.

If you’re looking to build a proper deck, you should be prepared to spend anywhere from $1,000-$2,000. Lumber is expensive, and if you choose expensive finishes, stains, or fixtures, your price will only increase. Makeshift decks can dramatically reduce costs and can be constructed with pallets and salvaged wood.

Portable RV decks are also quite expensive and can cost anywhere from $1,200-$2,400.

The quality and grade of materials you select when building your deck are the biggest factors in determining the cost, as well as the appearance. You’ll want to invest in treated wood, as the deck will be exposed to outdoor elements. If you fancy a higher-end RV deck, you can choose from premium wood selections like redwood and cedar. Once the deck is constructed, you’ll also have to decide on a stain and top coat to finish off the project.

A final consideration to make when constructing your RV deck is accessibility. Will anyone that’s mobility impaired be using it? If so, you may want to consider a deck that’s low to the ground or consider installing a ramp instead of stairs for guests to walk up.

The Best Travel Trailer RV Deck Ideas

Ready to add a deck to your camper? Great! There are countless design options that you can draw inspiration from, and even more ways to decorate the deck once it’s built. Let’s check out some of our favorites.

Sunrise Decks makes a variety of custom fabricated deck options for your camper, fifth wheel , or travel trailer. These decks are highly adjustable to fit the exact dimensions of your rig. With telescoping legs, they quickly match the height of your camper, and you can purchase modular options to add additional deck space.  No carpentry is required!

While expensive, these decks have an extremely secure construction and are perfect for pets and folks with mobility issues.

A floating deck is one of the easier RV deck ideas on this list. If your campsite is frequently affected by rain, and you’re sick of stepping out of your rig into a muddy mess, installing a floating deck will keep you elevated from the ground.

Fabricating one of these is super simple and just requires pallets and cinder blocks. Do your best to excavate the porch area to make it level, place supporting cinder blocks on the corners and in the middle of the deck area, and lay down some weather-treated pallets. Place some screws in between the pallets to keep them secure, and you have yourself a quick, functional RV deck!

This is one of the more permanent RV deck ideas on the list, but if you have the space and DIY knowledge it’s a great option! Adding a roof to your existing RV deck requires more advanced carpentry skills, but doing so will greatly enhance the functionality of your porch.

A covered RV deck will block the sunlight, offering much-needed shade on those hot summer days. It’ll also allow you to enjoy the outdoors even in rainy weather. Nothing is better than relaxing on your porch with a cup of coffee during a morning rain storm!

Similar to a covered deck, adding a screened-in option around it is only an option for more permanent RVers. If you RV in a location that commonly has insect problems, a screened-in deck completely mitigates the problem of annoying bugs. No more need for mosquito repellent, tiki torches, or fly swatters! You’ll be able to enjoy the summer nights in peace.

Once you’ve got your perfect deck installed, decorating and furnishing it is crucial! This will contribute to a homey look that makes your RV deck look like a warm, inviting living space. Some options for outdoor furniture and accessories include:

  • Outdoor Sofa: A comfy outdoor sofa that’s water and UV resistant is a necessity for your porch. You can sit back and enjoy a good book or even take a little cat nap.
  • High Top Drink Bar with Stools: Turn your RV deck into your friend’s favorite gathering point. With a fully functioning alcohol bar and some high-top bar stools, good times are in store.
  • Propane Fireplace: Make a propane firepit the center place of your RV deck. Kick it on late at night during the summer for some smores and stargazing.
  • String Lights: Everyone loves accessory lighting. Install some LED string lights around the perimeter of your deck, on the railing, or high above, to liven up the space.

Adding an outdoor kitchen is one of the top RV deck ideas that many RVers go for. Everyone loves grilling outdoors, and you can easily set one up on your new porch. If you’re really into grilling, consider getting an outdoor smoker for some delicious homemade BBQ.

How to Build Your Own RV Deck

Unless you’re willing to dish out a few thousand dollars for a manufactured portable RV deck, building your own is your best option. You can choose the simple route, and stick with cement blocks and a couple of pallets as mentioned earlier, but if you’re looking for a quality addition to your RV, build a proper deck.

A basic deck requires very little construction knowledge to take on, and a simple assortment of materials. The tools you’ll need for the job include:

  • A Circular Saw
  • Sander
  • Decking Screws
  • Measuring Tape

Here’s a quick breakdown of how to build your own RV deck in just 6 steps.

Before you even start constructing your deck, you’ll want to make sure that there’s a nice clear plot of ground to build on top of. Spend some time stripping away any grass or weeds that are currently growing. If your campsite is naturally rocky, use a hoe to pry up some of the larger rocks. Finally, scrape down the exposed dirt with a rake to make a nice smooth surface to build on.

If you have the time and patience, it’s also worth leveling the area you’ll be building on. You don’t need to be absolutely perfect, but digging out uneven ground will make the installation much easier.

Top Travel Trailer and RV Deck Ideas + How to Build Your Own 9

Once you clear the land, you’ll need to lay a proper foundation for your deck to rest on. Add rows of deck blocks where you’ll be laying joists to support the deck. The more pier blocks you add, the sturdier your deck will be, so don’t skimp! A good rule of thumb is to lay one block every one foot, separated by rows that are three feet apart.

Be sure to purchase blocks that have a natural 4×4 recess in them so that your pier posts slide right in! Once each block is laid, use a level to ensure they’re all flush. If needed, lower higher blocks into the soil slightly.

Top Travel Trailer and RV Deck Ideas + How to Build Your Own 10

Once your deck pier blocks are added, cut the same number of 4×4 posts to the desired height of your deck. Slide these posts into the concrete blocks and secure them, if needed. Double-check with a level again to make sure that everything is even.

Add some flanking joists, in the form of 2×6 planks, width-wise across the deck. Screw these into the 4×4 piers.

Top Travel Trailer and RV Deck Ideas + How to Build Your Own 11

Once your piers and joists are all installed, it’s time to add your decking boards! Choose the wood material of your liking and adequately screw them into the joists at each pier location.

With the piers, joists, and decking boards installed, you can choose to install extra fixtures like stairs or a railing. If your RV deck is low enough on the ground, you can choose to skip the stairs in lieu of a small wooden step or concrete slab.

For the finishing touch, sand down the deck and stain it with your preferred finish. Be sure to add enough layers so that it’ll last, and top it off with strong weather coating sealant .

Top Travel Trailer and RV Deck Ideas + How to Build Your Own 12

If your campsite or RV park allows it, installing a deck on your RV can be a beautiful addition. Building your own is an easy DIY project that can be accomplished in a couple of days, leaving you with a lasting outdoor extension on your RV. Fortunately, there are even options for those not looking to take on a carpentry project.

With these RV deck ideas, you’re well equipped to start turning your RV deck into a relaxing outdoor living space. Kick back, relax, and enjoy everything that the space has to offer.

This post may contains affiliate links. If you click and buy we may make a commission, at no additional charge to you. Please see our disclosure policy for more details.

For some camping enthusiasts, tents might not be the perfect solution to spend the night outdoors. Camper or travel trailers offer better safety, durability, and comfort. The most uncomplicated trailers may be an enlarged box within which a bed can be fit, or it could be a trailer tray with tent-like extensions providing a secure space. Some trailers may even have a mini kitchen and a bathroom attached.

When you go through the catalogs for trailers available in the market, chances are that they are overpriced. You have the option of buying one through customization services, but those would also burn a hole in your pocket.

This is when you turn to DIY travel trailer plans. Here are 18 plans to choose from, according to the materials you wish to use, the type of camper you desire, and the interiors that would enhance your energies during your travels. These DIY travel trailer plans and ideas are free to access, and some of them come with videos attached to understand the process at each step with ease.

Table of Contents

1. DIY Wooden Teardrop Camper

This is the perfect option for woodworking lovers. The plan-creator encourages users to find a teardrop design according to their liking since anything could fit into the measurements they have provided.

Luan plywood is used to seamlessly build the teardrop structure’s outer shell, without cutting up one wooden board after another to achieve the curves. The frame is constructed around the side pieces so that there is space left for insulation purposes. Moreover, the visual aesthetics make this an epic choice for the road.

2. DIY Tiny Travel Trailer

Construct a smaller version of your house with this DIY trailer plan. It requires a wide trailer for the base. The guide has recycled the old frame of a broken-down camper and built this beauty over it.

The interiors include a convertible sofa-bed, ample space to move around, an air conditioner unit, and windows, complete with curtains. Aluminum sheets cover the exterior to provide additional durability and insulation.

3. Simple DIY Teardrop Trailer

Measuring 4×8 feet, this teardrop trailer can fit two people comfortably. It provides space for a bed, as well as a pull-up table. But this trailer doesn’t serve just as a sleeping quarter, it has a galley in the back too. This galley is built into the cavity of the curved end of the structure. You could fit in a small DVD player, refrigerator, mini-pantry, or simply install a cabinet to store travel essentials.

These 14 sturdy DIY tabletop plans could help shed light on suggestions to beautify the galley.

4. DIY Stand-up Camper

Fancying an RV for your camping trips but cannot afford one? This guide converts your travel dreams into reality! It provides the most space out of all the DIY travel trailer plans mentioned in the list.

Using a large trailer base, you can construct a stand-up camper that can fit in a makeshift kitchen countertop, galleys, washroom cabinet, convertible couch, BTU air conditioner unit, small HDTV, and even a small microwave oven. You could also have a little water tank or refrigerator. The plywood used makes it extremely water-resilient.

5. DIY Tiny House Trailer

The heart of this ATP camper is a fishing boat trailer, which can be acquired for cheap. It provides a 4-foot-wide base structure to support the 12-foot plywood walls. You will need to attach ‘wings’ for making a bunk space and a protective lid. These wings are sheets of ½ inch plywood, sized at 4 by 8 foot.

It can easily fit in a bed for two, a small cabinet, and electric outlets. You are free to add any other water-resistant personalization thereon.

6. DIY Semi-Metal Teardrop Camper

Using an old popup camper, you can construct a spacious structure with a metal clamshell. It can house two people and boasts a small kitchen and bathroom.

DIY beginners would find this guide simple to execute, since all of the steps come in detailed sections, with many pictures for reference attached.

7. DIY Teardrop Camper

Do you want to provide comfortable amounts of space for more than 2 people? Then head over to this camper guide. Complete with a convertible dining table, kitchen, back galley for storage, and a ventilating window, you could take many long camping trips with this trailer.

Due to its large size, it would take a month’s work or two to finish this project, but it is much cheaper than seeking out store-bought travel trailers.

8. DIY Rimple Camper

‘Rimple’ stands for simple and rounded off; since this camper has equal curves on either corner it is not a teardrop-shaped travel trailer. It enables you to build a back galley with added cabinets and enough area to fit 2 adults and 2 children.

9. DIY Basic Travel Trailer

Head over to this plan if you are looking for a plan with simple construction. Ideal for one person, it can yet fit in 2 people with adjustments made to the bed size. The false flooring under the bed and cabinet provide storage space. You can keep the battery, portable washroom tank, water tank, and all the wiring in this space so that the camper’s interior is clutter-free.

Check out these 10 best metal cutting saws . You’ll definitely need such equipment for ensuring a quality end product.

10. DIY Custom Teardrop Camper

The author uses the base frame of a snowmobile for the pod-like structure. They have chosen to convert the back portion into cabinets, serving as a kitchen, stovetop, and a sink included. Luan plywood is used for the curve, but a lot of braces are attached to keep it from warping because of its steepness.

11. Box Trailer DIY Camper

You do not need to worry about carpentry skills with this plan. It is the easiest of all the DIY travel trailer plans mentioned in our list. The 7×5 inch box trailer contains the bed.

Using sturdy fabric and PVC pipes, you can build a tent structure around the trailer for a makeshift roof and walls with velcro windows. Extend the tent according to your needs, and it can be neatly packed up once your camping trip ends.

12. DIY Vintage Travel Trailer

Designed in 1947, it is easily one of the key foundations of the many teardrop designs found on the web today. The plan calls for a comfortable and durable construction. It can house two people and has some storage places built-in.

There are no other frills attached unless you want to personalize it further and add additional facilities like a small kitchen or an air conditioning unit.

13. DIY Metal-press Camper

Humid conditions can break down wooden structures over the years, no matter how water-tight they may be. Thus, this DIY project includes the strength of both, strong plywood and stainless steel, which are finally covered with aluminum sheets.

This sleek teardrop trailer showcases a classic design, with a bed for two in the central cavity, and a kitchen-cabinet structure in the back drawers.

14. Off-road DIY Overland Camper

Looking for a camper that would fit in a family of 5 people? Head to this DIY plan where you can build a camper piece-by-piece on top of a box trailer. This camper’s assembly involves building a convertible couch frame, dining table, heater facility, and a bathroom cabinet.

Fiberglass and tractor paint are utilized for long-term durability. The plan includes videos for reference, along with steps showing a brief textual explanation.

15. DIY Futuristic Travel Trailer

Caravans are like small houses built on wheels. This DIY plan lets you make a mini-caravan, using a folding trailer. Most of the work is done on the interiors since the camper is built via a simple construction of plywood and aluminum sheets.

The interiors are equipped with a chic kitchen, cupboard with shelves, multiple cabinets, a dresser, and a convertible couch. The window areas can be pulled out to provide more space for dining.

16. DIY Camper on a Budget

An old RV is broken down to its frame, which is then recycled to build this impressive RV on a trailer. Built at a budget of $4500, it rivals many professional brands. The camper is compact, being only 7 feet wide and 12 feet long.

The construction of the walls, insulation roof, floor plans, windows, and cabinets placement are left to your personalization. There is enough space to build in a complete bathroom facility as well.

17. DIY Tiny Teardrop Trailer

Your camper could be beautiful, as well as functional. This DIYer has focused more on the aesthetics of this teardrop camper for two. Additionally, it includes a bed and storage space for the bare necessities.

It features a double-doorway, and the exterior wood frame is stained using a burning technique, that also keeps bugs away. A small section is left out on the roof, where a plexiglass window is installed instead. It makes for a great window to enjoy the rays of the sun or stargaze at night.

18. DIY Foam Built Camper

Pick up a 6×10 foot trailer from your nearest junkyard to create this hard-shell camper. It is built in a way to provide maximum interior space and utilizes foam as insulation and as a cover.

This is an extensive construction that requires you to build everything from scratch, including the door. This project is mainly recommended for skilled woodworkers.

Each of these DIY travel trailer plans can give fair competition to the store-bought trailers. Time and patience are required since many of these projects could take up weeks to complete.

While some of these provide you with proper plans, others are simply ideas with reference images attached to learn as you build. Whichever DIY project you choose, comfort for your camping trip is guaranteed!

Awesome RV Deck Design Ideas + How to Build a Deck

These awesome RV deck design ideas are perfect for any make or model!

From traditional arts and crafts style to sleek and modern, you’ll find an RV deck design that suits you and your needs. You’ll also learn how to build a floating RV deck quickly and easily.

RV’s are a smart choice for both full-time living and temporary travel. They can be used in a multitude of ways; as an affordable tiny home, a vacation or weekend cabin, or as a traveling home on wheels.

These awesome RV deck designs can help keep your camper clean, create an attractive outdoor living space, and increase the overall enjoyment of your RV.

Richard’s Modern RV Deck Design

Our first RV deck design was submitted to us by Richard Quick. He allowed us to feature his gorgeous Florida manufactured home last year.

Richard’s new fifth wheel is set up in the popular Sawmill Camping Resort in Dade City, Florida for weekend getaways. The campground, like many across the country, is fairly strict and has a board of directors that must approve all RV modifications.

Richard’s favorite style is modern and warm. He wanted a custom RV deck design that had a modern design with high usability. He found a contractor that turned his vision into reality with a few specifications: the design had to meet the board’s approval and be transportable.  The deck needed to slide out and be stored easily while on the road.

RV Deck Design - Portable, Stylish and Modern Style

The deck’s skirting panels are lightweight and easy to move when necessary. The hidden staircase creates a ‘soft entry’ and the platform has benches that create a welcoming area to take your shoes off or have an afternoon drink.

RV Deck Design - Portable, Stylish and Modern Style 2

The multi-color design is a perfect representation of the ‘California Modern’ style.  Richard admits he was a bit hesitant when his contractor showed up with four cans of stain color: green tea, ebony, mahogany, and dove gray. He states, “Never in a million years would l think all those colors would work together!” Luckily, Richard went with the design and the results are incredible.

The front and side skirting below the outdoor storage areas are slotted and lift out easily.

How to Build Your Own RV Deck

Dorothy Ainsworth purchased her camper for $2500 and set it up on her property. Next, she built a portable deck that can be removed easily whenever she wants to take the camper on the road.

Dorothy does a magnificent job of journaling her RV deck design and building process on her blog . In addition, it is a great resource for anyone that is interested in self-reliance, affordable home building, and property development. Visit her at dorothyainsworth.com .

Step 1: Laying Concrete Pier Blocks

Below are a few photos chronicling Dorothy’s RV deck build. She began the build by having the property graded before the camper was placed.

The next step was to lay concrete deck blocks and piers. Learn more about post and beam foundations and concrete block piers here.

For portable, floating decks and sheds it isn’t always necessary to have footings poured below the frost line.

Deck blocks are a fairly new product that allows for quick and easy deck foundations. They are best suited for ground-level or low-level decks that will be no more than 3 foot off the ground (you can use them for higher builds if the blocks are installed with in-ground footers).

Learn more about concrete deck blocks and floating decks on Home Depot’s Blog.

Dorothy set 20 concrete blocks into the hard-packed soil beneath the gravel.

Step 2: Setting the Piers and Joists

Once the concrete blocks were laid, the 4X4 piers were set into the block brackets at the appropriate height. These concrete blocks are very convenient; they can be placed just about anywhere and manipulated to get the needed height.

Dorothy ran 16′ long, 2×6 joists along each side of the 4×4 posts in each row and attached them by screws.

Steps 3-5: Decking Boards, Steps, and Staining

The Douglas Fir decking boards were then laid over the joists, steps were built, and the completed deck was stained.

Choosing the Right Lumber for Your RV Deck

Choosing which type of lumber you use on your deck is as important as the design. You’ll need to take several things into account: weight, durability, insect and waterproofing, staining ease, and longevity.

There are three basic types of decking lumber:

  • Composite Wood

The end result was a low profile, floating deck that looks great in front of the camper.

Long Term RV Deck Designs

Permanent, or long-term, RV setups are most used for full time living situations and vacation homes. These installations are most popular near high traffic vacation spots such as lakes, rivers, and beaches.

There are some amazing camper retrofits that use decking to create smart outdoor living spaces. The following are permanent decking designs in a popular Canadian tourist area featured on Michael Geller’s blog :

Permanent RV deck Design- Japanese style

The Japanese style pergola above is an amazing addition to the RV. It creates a perfect area for container gardening as well as a covered outdoor living space.

The RV deck design above creates a perfect outdoor dining space for this modern fifth wheel.

Rain won’t stop this family’s enjoyment. What an amazing deck!

This next deck and railing is a beautiful addition to a 30 foot recreational vehicle. These longer RV’s are typically used for permanent vacation housing as they are more difficult to move.

This RV is used as a summer home and takes advantage of its Indiana location with a retractable awning, perfect for optimal sun and shade. See more of this great camper here.

RV Deck Ideas – As a paint job is the quickest way to transform RV, a deck is also the fastest way to add space. Primarily, decks are made of wood material or vinyl.  Redwood, cedar, and pressure-treated pine are popular for decking. Furthermore, not only practical, deck materials offer beauty and warmth.

How to Build A Portable Deck for RV

portable rv deck plans

Basically, the type of deck you build depends on whether it will be temporary or long term. If you are staying at the campsite for a short time, simple design or portable deck is all you need. However, if you are staying put for a while, you might need a little sturdier deck. Below we put some easy steps to help you build your own RV deck.

The Preparation

Make a plan.

simple deck plans

Planning is essential as it will accelerate the overall progress when you build the deck. Therefore, you have to make a proper plan ahead of time for the deck design and material requirements. So that way you can prepare the exact amount of material to use. Besides, for safety reasons, you also need to take into consideration the weight your deck has to endure.

Get the tools

skydeck rv

Generally, you will need a saw, a drill, a screwdriver, a hammer, and a tape measure. Also, you need protective gear to protect you from plenty of dust and splinter.

Prepare the materials

double decker rv trailer

Wood is commonly the preferred choice for a deck. However, you should only use pressure-treated lumber. Go for the stuff that is light and tough. Plus, you need high-quality glue to prevent your deck from disintegrating quickly.

Building a Portable Deck for RV

Find the right location

how to build rv porch

Select a location that’s suitable to set up the deck base. Choose a flat surface or level the ground to prevent it from wobbling when you use it. Then, create the deck base with a concrete block to make it a sturdy foundation.

Build the post and set the joist

rv with built in deck

When the deck base is in place, start cutting some posts out of the wood beam.  After that, use glue or screw to attach them to each block. Then, construct a series of straight and liner joists to connect all the block posts. The stability of the deck relies a lot on this step, thus, you need to pay close attention. Furthermore, every block must stay neatly in line. Also, every post has to be at the same height. One mistake here could cost the entire project, stay focus!

Time to create the steps

rv deck kits

Cover the deck and create a couple of steps. After the joists and posts look good enough, start covering everything with multiple wood planks. Lay the plank side by side till there is no visible gap left and secure them in place. The ideal length is 48 inches, though you probably have to squeeze in a shorter plank at the end.  After that, time to build some steps. Gather the stringer and the board in a manner that suits you the most. Don’t secure them until you are sure about the position and shape. Use as many boards as you want to increase the steps. However, you need to consider that a heavy stair would limit the deck portability.

Simple Deck Plans

rv roof deck plans

There are three things you need to consider before determining the size of the deck: how you plan to use it, how many people it will accomodate, and the size of outdoor furniture and accessories. Some people do just fine laying out an RV mat or even a rug. There are also low deck that you can put on the ground then pick up easily and take with you when you move on down the road. Others elevate their decks several feet from the ground. It all depends on personal preference. Below we put some simple deck plans that might inspire you

Ground Level Deck

rv deck decorating ideas

The ground level deck is a great way to add some livability to your RV. It can be a perfect place to hang out and barbecue. However, since the ground level decks are so low, with only inches from dirt, the materials have to endure a damp environment. Therefore, use pressure-treated beams and joists to protect the deck from rot and insect attack. Furthermore, if you prefer cedar, redwood, or some other wood, give the undersides a coat of finish or water sealer before installing them.

Mid-Elevation Deck

simple deck plans

The mid-elevation deck can make your RV deck looks more sophisticated. Besides, since the deck is not placed on the ground, it prevents the wood from getting damp. Therefore, it will need less maintenance.

Frequently Asked Question

Can you put a deck on an rv.

With plenty of unique layouts, decking performs assorted functions, such as adding coziness and the range of exploration. It functions as a comfortable flooring in camping areas for both adults and children, and as an attractive living area for travelers. It offers possibilities for both cleanliness and utilization, making for an enhanced RV experience.

What is a floating deck?

A floating deck is a deck that exists above edifices, and it’s usually raised up above the ground. Floating decks can be located either off the ground or at grade. They are frequently called floating-grade or  grade-level  decks.

How do you build a temporary deck?

You can build a temporary tailgate using wood pallets and a large piece of plywood. Collect wood pallets and line up the first one with the level ground. The surface you build your deck should be at least 8 feet by 8 feet, so you need at least four pallets. If you want to build the deck larger, add pallets as needed.

How to Build A Portable Deck For Your RV

Hey! This site is reader-supported and we earn commissions if you purchase products from retailers after clicking on a link from our site.

If you’re like me, you prefer the feel of your feet walking across a nice wooden RV deck. Yes, many campgrounds offer permanent sites at ground level with expanded laying concrete pier blocks or pads laid out with additional concrete blocks areas specifically for your outdoor grill or furniture, but in many cases, these can be rough and uncomfortable to walk on, or too smooth and when wet can be very slick to walk on.

For many RVers, the alternative to bare concrete blocks, gravel, or in the case of boondocking in some remote areas in the southwest area of the U.S., the desert and dry, baron part of our country. Many RVers choose to lay down a piece of carpet or indoor/outdoor artificial grass for extra living space, but the problem with those applications is that they hold sand or dirt, and worse yet, water or moisture. Hence, some start thinking of RV deck ideas.

When you break camp to move on to your next seasonal site, do you really want to roll up and load up a piece of wet carpet to one of your storage bays? My guess is no, and in this article, we’ll look at a great alternative for providing comfortable seating and lounging area with the RV deck, that is easily assembled and transported in your RV, whether you drive a 5th wheel, travel trailer, or any other type of motorhome.

That’s where the RV deck comes in, so let’s dig into some RV deck ideas to help you create and build a deck.

The Decking

These 24” x 24” RV deck blocks are made from Ipe (pronounced “EE-pay) wood, dense wood that comes from South America. Much like teak, its density allows its longevity to be far longer than most lumber made from softer woods such as pine or maple. In fact, when properly care for, it can last for over 75 years making it very suitable for an RV deck.

I never refer to an RV, an RV deck, or any of its accessories as an investment, and I won’t with this product either. However, buying a product with a longevity of 75 years is well worth the extra cost of many of its competitors with similar designs.

Connecting Your RV Deck Blocks

The tools needed for securing your portable RV deck panels in place for long-term stays or short stays are easy when using the DeckWise connectors. I recommend using the four-way connectors.

Each RV deck panel comes with a pre-drilled countersunk hole that lines up with the floating deck connectors and those connectors hold the RV deck tightly in place.

diy travel trailer deck

Once in place on the RV deck, these connectors will hold your portable deck securely and are easily removed and installed between visits to various camping locations. In fact, an 8’ x 10’ portable wooden RV deck can be quickly assembled in less than an hour once you have learned how easy it is to accomplish this floating deck task.

diy travel trailer deck

One of my favorite DeckWise connector designs is that they include pre-molded lines on the underside of the connectors that allow you to bend them so that they detach from the other part of the connector on the RV deck. This makes it easy to hide your connectors under the framework of your RV deck on its outer sides.

diy travel trailer deck

On the downside, it’s likely that while your properly cared for Ipe wood decking boards will last 75 years, these plastic components will last a fraction of that time. In fact, I would expect them to fail within 3-5 years as they can’t hold up to moisture, UV light, and other natural elements that the RV deck will be exposed to, so you should plan on inspecting or replacing them on a regular basis.

Proper Care for Your Ipe Wood

Ipe wood is extremely dense and as such it doesn’t absorb protective oils as easily as softwoods. However, the real reason to apply an oil treatment to Ipe is that it shields the RV decks from UV exposure or rather, sunlight damage.

As a rule, Brazilian Walnut or Ipe, will always have a rich, dark grain much like teak wood or ebony. However, over time sunlight will bleach these hues out of the wood grain and the wood will eventually become more of a gray tone so I would apply some wood oil to prevent this from happening.

It will also cause some additional cracking on the RV deck surface, and while not taking too much away from its longevity, you would be well advised to regularly care for your decking and its connectors.

Are There Other Alternatives?

Yes, but you’ll find that most alternatives will have more components and will take you longer to set up. For example, this product made of Acacia wood comes in 12” x 12” panels that are secured in place by using Polypropylene carbonate (PPC) framework forms that allow you to snap them in place piece by piece.

flybold Acacia Wood Patio Flooring Interlocking...

What Is Acacia Wood?

Like Teak and Ipe wood, this lumber is very dense and is a plantation type of wood. In other words, it grows quickly, is good for construction in outdoor locations and it’s easily harvested using shorter growing timelines. While Acacia wood can be farmed in South America’s wetter locations, it’s best suited for harvesting in places located in southeast Asia and this helps to keep it’s cost lower.

Acacia wood does require some maintenance such as staining, or it will discolor over time. To be honest, staining the wood can add a few years of life onto the wood, but in all reality, it won’t be much.

Using Plastic Polymers for Framing

The biggest problem I have with using Polypropylene carbonate (PPC) forms for holding your wood products in place is that as a rule, plastic is unreliable in terms of when it’s matched with environmental issues. Too often, these plastic substrate products don’t stand up to varied temperatures, ultraviolet lighting and uneven surfaces and are likely to fail far more quickly than using a design that is based upon a long lasting wooden slat design such as the Ipe wood framework.

Final Thoughts

Whatever your choice is when choosing a portable deck to travel with, keep in mind that these components will take up storage living space in your camper as well as time to set them up when you decide to use them. Are those factors something you’re willing to deal with during your travels? Also, having a portable deck is defiantly a way to make eating outdoors more pleasurable .

If they’re not, then buy yourself a small piece of indoor/outdoor carpet and use it instead. On the other hand, if you intend to stay at a location for an extended stay, then a nice wooden RV deck would work better for you. It’s really all about what you prefer to do, as is all traveling the country in your RV.

As always, thanks so much for following along with my RV deck ideas and I’m happy that I can share my thoughts with you. Once again, my friends, I wish you safe travels and I hope to see you out on the road someday.

RV

Everyone loves traveling. It’s the best way to meet people, explore different places, and enjoy a variety of cuisines. But staying in hotels is not feasible all the time. In such times, RV is the best companion you can ever ask for. It makes the traveling experience comfortable and memorable.

No wonder, these days, more and more people are investing in an RV to make their travel journey convenient.

RV is just like a mini replica of your home. It has everything that you will need during your trip. However, your RV needs extensive care to serve you the best.

If you are looking to improve your traveler and make it in a way that you feel like your home, then consider building a portable deck for your RV. To increase outer space, many portable decks are used in houses, RVs, farmhouses, etc. In addition, a portable deck attached to your RV can enhance the sitting space. Besides, you can plan fun activities, candlelight dinners, a game zone for kids, and many more things in that open space.

People have different concepts about portable decks and consider it a big task as it involves construction. So it might sound daunting to go all into that building and construction. But trust me, it will be excellent for your RV. You will thank me later for this advice.

But before that, let’s understand what portable decks are and how they will benefit you.

What is a Portable Deck?

A portable deck is the extension of your house or RV space, and its size may vary depending on your outdoor space.

It is movable and can serve as an outdoor living space. There are a variety of decks available. However, portable decks are more popular because of various benefits.

The size of the portable deck is smaller than the permanent deck, which leads to less use of construction material. Thus it is less expensive in comparison to a permanent deck.

Best for Rentals:

Adding a portable deck is the best way to improvise your home if you live in a rented house. The permanent deck would not be a feasible option.

A portable deck, as the name suggests, is easy to move from one place to another in case you want to experiment with the outdoor looks of your RV. Likewise, it will be easier to move them around if you are bored of having your morning coffee at the exact location every day.

It is good to have as it adds extra space to the RV. You can plan different recreational activities in your RV for your family. However, the whole process of constructing a deck is daunting.

Moreover, there are many factors on which the overall construction of the deck depends. But we have narrowed down the complex process into seven easy-to-understand steps.

Now you know how a portable deck can be beneficial for you. So why not build one for your RV?

I hope you are convinced that a portable deck is one of the best ways to improvise your RV. Then let’s jump into the steps to bring your visualization to life.

Step 1: Identify the Specifications for your Deck

The first step in building a deck is determining what size, length, width, and height you need. This will help you save money, time, and unnecessary building hassle. Also, you need to figure out what type of deck you want- elevated or ground level.

This factor will also help you decide how much material you need to build a solid portable deck. For example, if you develop a bit elevated deck, you might need some extra material for support. This planning step is crucial as it will determine the cost, time, material, and effort required to complete the project.

Step 2: Purchase the Required Materials

The next step is to list all the construction materials you will need while building a deck. Various materials are available in the market, but composite decking is gaining popularity these days.

However, it is expensive and less durable. Yet if you want to build a composite deck, then be prepared for constant repairing.

Wood is the most durable and fantastic material for building a deck for an RV. It is durable and requires less maintenance.

Other than wood, Cedar lumber is also available as material for building decks. While choosing the material for the patio, please make sure to consider its strength rather than its price.

Here is the set of tools that you will need to build the deck.

  • Drill
  • Tape measure
  • Circular gun
  • Screwdriver

Purchasing material from the right place is also equally important. So here is the link to the products you can buy from amazon.

  • STREBITO Precision Screwdriver Set
  • Unfinished Birch Wood Canvas Panels Kit
  • PORTER-CABLE 20V MAX* Cordless Brad Nailer
  • Deck Plus 48419 Wood Screws
  • Muzata 4Pack Cable Railing Post
  • SUNHZMCKP Magnetic Screwdriver
  • Benchmark – 3 Piece Hammer Set
  • GardenJoy Cordless Power Drill Set
  • CRAFTSMAN Tape Measure

Step 3: Construct a Support Structure

Build a Portable Deck For RV

It would be best if you had strong support for your deck to hold the weight of the deck.

To construct a support structure, you must cut wood posts for different lengths with a circular saw. Now set down the posts to make a square at an equal distance from each other and fasten it using a screw gun.

Step 4: Chop and Fix the Deck Planks

Portable Deck For RV

Chop eight pieces of wood and set them on the supporting frame next to each other. Ensure equal spacing.

Step 5: Add Legs to the Frame

Add Legs to the Frame

After securing the plank to the base, chop four legs from the wood and use a screw to fit all those four legs in the corner of the other side of the plank.

Step 6: Safeguard the Deck

Finally, safeguard your deck by adding a protective layer to enhance its durability. For this, turn the deck and remove all the dirt and sawdust with a cleaner.

After cleaning the surface, apply a thin sealant layer to save your deck from moisture. Let it dry for 24 hours, and use a stain for protection.

Step 7: Find the Place.

Attach the Deck

Cost of Building a Portable RV Deck

The cost of the deck will depend on many factors, but primarily what impacts more is the material used and the size of the deck. On average, a ten by 10-foot wooden portable deck will cost around $1000 to $2500. A hardwood deck of 10 by 10 feet will cost about $6000.

However, you can cut costs through intelligent planning. For example, you can use plywood to build a deck rather than pine wood. Also, the material and tools price will vary, depending on your residential location.

Final Words

Adding a portable deck in front of your camper is a great way to enhance your living space. It also provides a friendly place to enjoy your morning coffee or plan an evening barbeque.

Mostly wood is preferred as a building material, but you can also use metal. However, it is easy to work with wood, giving a more finished look to the deck.

Following these 7 steps, you can build a nice portable deck for your RV.

How to Build a Portable Deck for RV – A Super Easy Guide!

When simply the awning does not cut it, you need to build decks for RV trailers . Building a permanent deck structure is not a viable solution for people living in a motorhome . As they are constantly traveling, they need a portable RV deck  that can be packed with other things when necessary. But, how to build a portable deck for RV ? Does it need professional service or you can do it with a little carpentry skill?

Portable Decks for RVs – Why Do You Need It?

1. join boards., 2. form square blocks., 3. assemble the deck., some tips for how to build a portable deck for rv.

When you are living in a travel trailer, a mobile decking is not just something for convenience or aesthetic, it is a practical necessity.

Most RVers are happy with an awning and a seating arrangement under it. But, what will you do in the rainy season when the ground is wet or the grass is muddy? Thinking of living in Charleston in South Carolina. Plenty of areas in that region gets water-trapped after a good amount of rain.

Also, you will need a deck if there are large trees with roots coming out of the surface on the campsites. It is inconvenient to sit or walk under the awning if the surface is uneven.

In the next section, we will discuss how to build a portable deck for RV so that you don’t have to face these problems when camping.

How to Build a Portable Deck for RV

Some people just lay out a mat on the ground to spend outdoor time and consider it good enough. But, if you are not one of them, you need to learn to build portable decks for RVs .

Low-profile decks are the best option for the convenience of transportation. Some RVers like to elevate it a couple of feet from the grounds. It depends on personal preferences. Follow these steps to learn how to build a portable deck for RV :

You can either purchase 2 x 4 boards (4-foot long) or cut them in that size with a circular saw. What kind of boards will be the right option? As you are building a portable decking for RV , plywood panels for the decking and PVC pipes and panels for the posts and sides (if you decide to add these features) could be the most practical choices. As these are lighter than woods, hauling them inside the motorhome will be easier.

If you really want to use wood, use wooden pallets instead. They are inexpensive and you can bolt and nail them easily. Cover the surface with plywood or carpet, or just paint the pallets with a nice color.

If you decide to go with the 2 by 4 boards, form an ‘L’ by joining two boards together at their narrow edges. Use a drill machine to drive galvanized through the edge of one board to the other. Put two screws at the two ends to make the joining stronger.

Join two ‘L’ shapes together to form a square block. Now, take a 4 x 4 PVC board and glue or screw it to one side of the block. Make as many blocks as you need.

The last part is to put the blocks side by side across the length of your deck area. As they are separate blocks placed together, you need to find a way to make them stick with each other. Gluing can be an option, but it does not go well with the concept of a transportable deck. Joining the blocks together means you make the entire deck a single piece. An RV does not have that much of room to store an entire deck.

What can you do?

Well, there is a simple solution. Purchase a rubber mat or a carpet similar size or slightly bigger than the deck. After assembling the blocks together, lay the mat or carpet over them. Use tack pins or galvanizing screws (which may seem suitable) to attach them together. When you are moving, you just need to take out the screws, roll the carpet or mat, and store it with the square boxes.

You should have proper portable RV deck plans  to execute the DIY task. Especially, do have a clear idea about the measurements. Fix the dimensions of the deck and then calculate how many and which size of boards you need.

Some other tips that you can exploit are:

  • Always use safety gloves and goggles when you are cutting the boards or using the drill machine.
  • You can get free wood pellets if you just ask around a bit. Go to the local shops, facilities, or pallet recycling center.
  • When assembling the square blocks, place them in alternating patterns if you want to create a parquet style.

14 inspiring RV Deck Ideas

I have included some beautiful RV decks from Instagram, a few YouTube videos showing how to build an RV deck, and some RV deck decorating ideas to enhance your RV’s outdoor space.

Just note, not all these camper deck ideas are going to work for your situation.

So make sure to scroll through them all to see which ones catch your eye.

RV Deck Idea #1 – simple square deck

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Driftwood Manor (@driftwood.manor)

This is a simple, yet awesome and functional RV deck.

The clever thing they did with this is they built to deck to have a double-duty: they also use the deck as an RV step stabilizer. They built the deck to go underneath the bottom step of their stairs and this helps stop their RV from swaying.

You see in their photo description they say it is quieter too.

In one of their other Instagram photos it shows them building the deck frame. I can’t be certain, but it looks like the built the base using 2×6’s set on concrete deck blocks .

Check out their Instagram profile for additional pictures.

RV Deck Idea #2 – A fantastic RV deck and cover idea

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bill Holmes (@billholmes1971)

Check out this awesome deck with covered roof. They’ve done a great job making their RV deck look inviting and festive with some awesome decor. Plus, the deck has a covered metal roof protecting them from the elements . This probably helps keep the inside of the RV cleaner too…they can leave their dirty shoes outside.

You can’t really see the roof in this photo, but this Instagrammer has other photos on his Instagram profile. Check it out if you want to get a better idea of how this RV deck looks from multiple angles . (You can click “View Profile” button in top right corner of the above picture.)

RV Deck Idea #3 – long RV deck spans length of RV

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chase Conger (@projectconger)

Here is a great wooden deck that is long enough that it spans the length of the trailer . You can read his description above to see how he built it. And if you click the arrows in the picture above you can see “in progress” pics.

I like how he chose deck dimensions to minimize wood waste and labor time. He bought 16-foot long 2×4’s as the base, so he made the length of the deck 32-feet long. And the deck is 6-feet wide so he only had to cut the 12-foot deck boards in half to get the deck surface.

Looks very good.

Now want to see the follow-up pics… Here’s how it looks 2 years later

diy travel trailer deck

The 2 pictures above show how the deck looks 2 years after being built. And that is with no stain or sealer.

Still looks awesome. Thank you to ProjectConger for sharing these photos with us!

RV Deck Idea #4 – movable “floating deck” sections

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Smiths (the-knee-house你好) (@the_nihaouse_trailer)

This is a good example of movable RV deck. Each of the sections is 6-feet x 8-feet so I wouldn’t say it is super portable…but they could be moved.

Instead of having all the boards go in the same direction and look mundane, they made it more visually appealing by staggering the direction of the deck boards .

If you click the arrow button on the right side of the picture above you can see the “in progress” photo of this RV deck.

They keep the wood off the ground by setting the 2×4 base on top of cinder blocks. Then they used shims to get it level. (In this case it looks like they use an old kitchen cabinet door to prop up one end.)

RV Deck Idea #5 – deck with railing for added security

RV deck ideas - RV deck with railings for safey

This RV deck features a railing which is a good safety feature, and may be required depending on how high you make your RV deck.

It is a little hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like they made this deck using composite deck boards (plastic mixed with wood fibers). These are a great low-maintenance decking option. And it looks to be sitting on solid concrete footings…not movable concrete blocks (but I may be wrong?).

RV Deck #6 – pallet RV deck

This is a very cool deck that they built out of pallets. You can usually find pallets for free on second-hand marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace.

The cost of wood has really gone up (in my neck of the woods anyway) so a cheap RV deck idea like this one is appealing. Watch the video above to see how they did it.

RV Deck Idea #7 – Decks from Sunrise Decks

View this post on Instagram A post shared by mepiper (@rvdecks)

The company Sunrise Decks (located near Dallas Texas) makes a line of RV decks and porches that can installed without tools.

These RV decks would be excellent for seasonal campsites or permanent installations.

They have a lot more great pictures on their Instagram account which I encourage you to check out.

RV Deck Idea #8 – a portable RV Deck

These guys built their RV deck in modular sections with the goal of being able to move them around in a pickup truck when they leave their seasonal camping site.

It turned out well and the RV mat on it looks good too.

RV Deck Idea #9 – fantastic raised RV deck

In this video he shows how he built this awesome raised RV deck . He built it level with the door of the trailer so he doesn’t need to walk up RV steps to get in: he can walk up the solid wood stairs of the deck.

He said has a permanent site, so he shouldn’t need to move his trailer too frequently.

RV Deck Idea #10 – RV deck decorating ideas: deck lights

SUNFACE Solar Deck Lights Outdoor, 2 Modes LED Solar Fence Lights Waterproof, Garden Solar Decorative Step Lights (6Pack)

How cool would these deck lights look on your RV deck? They look great but they can also clearly define the edge of your deck.

The ones shown above are popular on Amazon and people seem to like them.

RV Deck Idea #11 – incredible RV outdoor living space

Just look at the RV deck on this AirBnB listing!

It is a full entertaining space: an outdoor RV living space .

And the string of globe lights make it look magical .

Arbrac 100ft Outdoor String Lights Waterproof/Connectable/Dimmable with 62 LED Shatterproof Bulbs UL Listed, G40 Globe 2700K Patio Lights Outdoor Lighting for Backyard Porch Cafe Party Wedding Garden

I was inspired by the RV deck idea #11 to include globe lights in this section. These are LED bulbs so they shouldn’t be as power-hungry as incandescent bulbs.

How much will these transform your RV outdoor living space?

These globe lights are popular on Amazon . These are the 100-foot long string, but you may only need a shorter, 50-foot string for your RV deck.

RV Deck Idea #13 – Dorothy’s handmade wooden deck

diy travel trailer deck

I came across this gem while researching Googling images for this article. So I reached out to the deck builder and she was nice enough to allow me to share this with you.

The deck builder’s name is Dorothy, and on her website she does a great job of showing us the steps it took to build this deck. You can see in the picture above that her ground was sloping so she had some challenges that she overcame with careful measuring, and adjustable post brackets.

diy travel trailer deck

In the photo above you can see the concrete piers that set in the ground and then the adjustable metal brackets holding up the vertical 4×4 posts.

For more details on how she built this incredible RV deck … check out her website.

RV Deck Idea #14 – beautiful wood deck with a removable section

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Solid Angle Homes Inc (@solidanglehomesinc)

Click the arrow in the photo above to see the finished deck . (Small arrow on right side of the picture.)

See what they did there?

Pretty cool…they made the small section that is near the front of the trailer movable so if the trailer needs to be moved and the backed in again, that small section can be out of the way.

This was built by the folks at “ Solid Angle Homes Inc ”

I hope you’ve found some inspiration in this list of RV decks. I’m considering this a “work in progress” and I hope to add more pictures of RV decks as I find them.

How To Build A Portable Deck For An RV

10/25/2021 · In: RV's

A portable deck is one of the things that can make your parked RV feel even more like home. It gives you additional space, and can make the overall size of your living area seem bigger. It can be decorated, customized, and made all your own.

While it takes some materials and technical know-how, it is still a worthwhile project that will elevate your RV space – literally and figuratively. You will need the correct tools and materials, and you’ll need to be mindful of the terrain.

To build a portable RV deck, you’ll first need to plan out your project. This project will require tools such as a power drill, a screwdriver, a hammer, and a tape measure. Additionally, you will need nails, screws, and plenty of wood or wood palettes. Select your location, set up the deck base, arrange the joist, and cover the deck.

How To Build A Portable Deck For An RV

Preparations .

As with any construction project, you’re going to want to have an action plan and prepare everything accordingly. Lay out all of the materials you’ll need to have on hand and start taking measurements.

Proper planning will save you a huge headache down the line. Having an action plan means you won’t have to stop halfway through your process to remeasure, correct mistakes, and budget accordingly.

Building a portable deck for an RV is going to be a time-consuming process. Park your RV in the place you’ll want your deck to sit initially, and put aside at least two days to finish the project. You might need less time, but it’s better to have a wider time-budger than a more narrow one.

The Tools

You won’t need high-level power tools for this project. Most of what you’ll use are things you’ll already have in your average tool chests. If you don’t have access to these, even the smallest of hardware stores will have them available for purchase. For this project, you’ll need:

  • A saw. A standard hand saw will be perfectly suited for building a portable deck.
  • A drill. If you don’t have a drill, you might still be able to get by with a screwdriver, but a drill will make this process much faster.
  • A hammer and nails
  • A screwdriver and screws. You may want to employ the use of anchors for your screws or nails, depending on the type of wood you’re using.
  • A tape measure. This is a vital piece that will make a world of difference in making sure that everything fits together perfectly.
  • A level tool. When you’re parked on uneven ground, you’ll need to make sure the supports and joists you use to hold the deck up adjust in height so that your surface stays level.

While these will assist in joining your deck together, you’ll also want to make sure you’re protected. Splinters, sawdust, sparks, or any other forms of debris can be hazardous to your skin, eyes, and lungs. Be sure you are well protected for this endeavor by keeping the right protective gear onhand:

diy travel trailer deck

  • Thick work gloves that fit you correctly
  • Safety goggles. Be sure these create a seal all around the area of your eyes.
  • A mask. Breathing in sawdust can be extremely dangerous. Be sure to protect your nose and mouth as you’re working with wood.

Depending on the type of deck you’re looking to build, you may need additional materials. For example, you’ll need brushes or rollers if you want to stain and lacquer the wood. It’s also recommended to have plenty of things available for cleanup, like soap, water, sponges, or a water hose.

The Materials

Because you’re building a portable deck, you want your materials to be lightweight. That said, it still needs to be tough and durable, heavy enough to stand up to weather and usage. Wood is the obvious choice for decks, as it’s easy to obtain, strong enough to last, and easy to move. You can include synthetic materials like acrylic or metals if you wish.

When selecting your wood, be sure to use pressure-treated lumber . Pressure-treated lumber has been made specifically to withstand a lot of use. It can put up with the wear and tear expected from a regularly used deck.

Wood that hasn’t been pressure treated will wear down quickly, endangering the structural integrity of your final product. Not only can this be dangerous, but it can lead you to need to do the entire thing over again. Doing so is a waste of your valuable time and money, which is why pressure-treated lumber is the best choice for building a portable deck for an RV.

When selecting materials like nails and screws, give all of your materials a good once-over check to make sure they’re in good condition. Making something with flimsy, easily broken nails or a dull saw will send the whole deck into disarray.

Typically, 48-inch boards will be the most useful for making your deck. You may have to cut some down or join more than one. Either way, this length is the most advised because it is the most efficient for the standard length of a deck.

Concrete Pier Blocks

A pier and beam foundation is the typical foundation you’d use for a portable deck. It involves wood posts or concrete pillars that are set into the earth. They bear the weight of your deck and provide support.

diy travel trailer deck

You can buy pre-made concrete pier blocks, or you can use cinder blocks to create a foundation. Pier blocks will have a much sturdier hold, but cinder blocks are easier to move. Some concrete pier blocks have straps that make it easier for them to hold onto pieces of wood. Look at your local hardware store to see what you might prefer to use.

These can also be called ‘deck blocks’, and they’re made specifically for this purpose. They make it much easier to build portable decks in a hurry.

How Much Does It Cost To Build A Portable Deck For An RV?

The cost of building a portable deck for an RV will rely heavily on a few factors. For example, some campsites or RV parks charge a fee for modification and accessories. Be sure to check with your campground’s office to ensure that you’re within your limits in the space.

The wood you use, and where you get it, will impact the final cost. If you already have plenty of tools and only need the materials, this is actually a fairly inexpensive project. The average cost of building a portable deck for an RV is going to be between $15 and $30 per square foot.

Adding a handrail, stains, and weather treatments will increase the final cost. This also does not include things like adding patio furniture or outdoor plants.

Step One: Lay Your Pier Blocks

It isn’t always necessary to have your deck high off the ground, but if you want it to meet the entryway steps of your RV, you’ll want to lay out your blocks.

If you’re using deck blocks or concrete pier blocks, measure them out in the area that you want the deck to cover. For example, if you want a 9 by 10 foot deck, lay out your blocks in a grid that is 9 feet wide and 10 feet long. Deck blocks are best for decks that will be no more than 3 feet of the ground.

The soil where you place your deck blocks should be hard-packed. You should aim to get it as level as possible.

Step Two: Set The Piers And Joists

Once you’ve got your concrete in place, you’ll want to set your piers into the brackets at the appropriate height. Run your joists along each side of the posts in each row. Attach them using screws, fitting anchors in as needed for additional support.

What you’ll basically be doing is using a series of straight and liner joists to connect all of the block posts together. Connect your piers carefully. If you’re using the type of concrete block that has straps, be sure that they’re all secure and set into place properly.

diy travel trailer deck

The more secure your joists, the more secure your deck will be when you’re finished. Be sure to keep your blocks in a neat line while you’re assembling the deck. Additionally, pay attention to be sure that all of your posts have the same height. so that the end result will stay level. This is a crucial step that will make or break your deck, so be sure to work carefully.

Step Three: Set Your Decking Boards

Once you’re satisfied with your joists and piers, you’ll start covering the deck. This will be the part you’ll wind up walking and setting your furniture on. You can hammer these in place with nails, add them in with a nail-gun, or even use a heavy-duty wood glue. If you want to make them easier to take apart, you could screw them into place.

Lay your planks side by side, being careful to avoid any visible gaps. Because wood will expand or contract due to weather or humidity, you might wind up finding gaps sometimes. However, when you first lay your deck, it is advised that you keep them as close together as you can.

Step Four: Build A Stair

This step is optional, but will add extra accessibility to your deck. The standard length for a step is 36 inches. You can go wider than this, but it’s not a great idea to make it any narrower. Three feet is a comfortable width for walking up and down onto your deck.

Assemble the stringer and the boards however you see fit in conjunction to the deck itself. Figure out the exact positioning and shape you desire for your stairs before you set them into place. Remember that making your stairs heavier will make them harder to transport, reducing portability.

Step Five: Finishing Touches

Now that your deck is in place, it’s time to make it your own. There are a lot of ways to customize a portable RV deck. Just remember that when you’re ready to pick up and move the RV again, you will have to move all of your decor with it.

Handrails

Not only does a handrail improve the safety and usability of your deck, but it can add additional decorative flair to the space.

To add handrails to your RV deck, you can go the simple, classic route, and make posts out of wood planks. To do this:

  • Use a pencil and a tape measure to measure where each of your posts will go. Be mindful of openings or stairs where the posts will not be needed. To help arrange them, fix a post to each corner first, and then at every opening. Then it’s a matter of measuring the spaces between them.
  • Find the center point of each board you’re using as a post. Attach a spindle here and fasten each board to your deck.
  • Once each post is secure, ceate a top railing and secure it to the top of your boards.

diy travel trailer deck

You could also install a premade metal or acrylic gate to your deck. These will usually fasten on with screws.

Staining

Staining your deck will add a flair of color to your deck. Not only does it look great, but it can protect your deck from water, sun, and wear. There are a variety of stain and finish colors to choose from. You can get samples from a hardware store to try out on scraps of wood leftover from making your deck.

To stain your deck, you’ll need to get it prepared first. If you don’t properly prep your wood, your stain will not take. Pressure wash the deck to remove any dirt, debris, and stains it may have taken while being built. If you don’t have a pressure washer, at least clean it with a hose.

It’s crucial to use a deck cleaner if you’ve had the deck for a while when you decide to stain it. Deck cleaner will help your stain adhere better. If you do apply deck cleaner, hose it off again after you’ve applied it.

Apply the stain of your choice to the deck. Some stains are semi-transparent, while others are more opaque. You might only need one coat, especially with semi-transparent stains. It’s vital that you mix and stir your stain first to ensure that it applies evenly and correctly.

A brush will be the best tool to use in small corners, but you can also use a paint roller. There are even special stain applicators that will make it significantly easier.

Decorating Your Portable RV Deck

The ways you decorate your deck are practically limitless. The only limits are your imagination, the space, and your budget. If you’re using the deck as an extension of your living space, the best way to make it even more comfortable is to decorate.

To illuminate your RV deck, there is a bevy of lighting options that are both practical and decorative. If you want to avoid running a bunch of wires to the vehicle or are looking to use less of your electricity, look for battery-operated lights. They’re perfect for dry camping or boondocking. You can also consider solar-powered lights.

An added bonus of battery-operated lamps is that they can be brought inside the RV and used on the go, or when you aren’t hooked up to electricity or using your battery/generators.

Strands of twinkling lights aren’t just for the holiday; for something extra decorative, try string lights. Bulb string lights can add a pleasant, ambient glow to your RV deck.

diy travel trailer deck

Be sure that any battery-operated lights you’re using are waterproof. If you suspect rain, take your pieces inside to stay on the safe side.

Plants

From potted palms to the tiniest of succulents, plants can go a long way on your RV deck. A monstera palm placed in one corner can bring a bit of class to the space, while a few ferns will make it feel more like home.

If you live in the RV full time, consider a container garden. Anything from fruits to vegetables to herbs can thrive in a container garden. Since it’s so contained, you can easily pack up and move the garden when it’s time to hit the road. Having one will make cooking and eating in the RV that much better.

Unless you’re planning to stand around on your deck, furniture is a must. There’s an impossibly broad range of pieces you can put on your RV deck. A simple arrangement of a table and chairs is perfect for entertaining, or simply relaxing on your own.

The most important takeaways in selecting outdoor furniture for your RV deck is that they should be weatherproof and portable. Things you can fold for easy travel are going to be your best bet.

A rug is a way to make walking through your deck even cozier underfoot. Since it is an outdoor area, rugs that have some degree of weather resistance will stand up well to the elements. Shag or faux fur rugs aren’t recommended, as they’ll get dirty more often than it will be worth it to clean them.

Outdoor area rugs can also add interesting visual contrast to your RV’s deck, especially ones that are dark in color that have been arranged on light wood.

If you suspect rain, try to take the rug, along with any textile pieces like pillows, inside for the time being. If your rug did get rained on, hang it out to dry somewhere so that it does not accumulate mold or mildew on your wooden deck.

Using The Wooden Palette Method

If all of this is more than you really want to do to build a portable deck for your RV, consider the quicker fix of a wood-palette deck.

diy travel trailer deck

Using wooden pallets to make a portable RV deck is simple, and takes much less handiwork than building it from scratch.

  • Obtain your wooden pallets. You might be able to find them for free in the shipping areas of some stores. However, it might not be the best idea to use these, as they could be worn or flimsy.
  • Hard-pack the ground where you’ll be setting your deck. If you want to prop your deck up, lay cinderblocks in a grid pattern.
  • Wooden pallets tend to have gaps between the slats. Fill these in by hammering in additional boards that are sized to fit into the gaps.
  • Connect the pallets together after you’ve placed them atop your cinder blocks. For best results, use nails to fix them together. For added security, use wood glue to affix them to the blocks below.

It’s a simple process, but one that will give you a perfectly serviceable deck. Since pallets are so light, they’re easily packed up and moved when you want to park somewhere else. This method can be combined with the more strenuous one by connecting the wooden pallet to your existing joists.

Conclusion

Knowing how to build a portable RV deck can give you the skills to elevate your living area Whether you’re camping or settling down long-term, a deck is a perfect way to modify, expand, and personalize your vehicle.

Making one by hand can be tricky. It takes a supply of materials and tools, and time should be set aside to do it right. Careful consideration should be taken into the slope or gradient of the ground you’re building on. Using pre-made concrete piers will help elevate the deck, or you can use deck blocks.

Simply lay down your piers or blocks after you measure the area you’re looking to build in. Connect the set and joists so that the foundation is built securely. Apply the upper slats of your deck and screw or nail them into place. After that, all that is left to do is decorate, either by building a handrail or adding stairs.

How to build a DIY camper trailer: Step-by-step building guide

Tom's DIY CAMPER TRAILER

Building your own camper trailer is an easy and budget-friendly way to travel!

Tom is a resourceful Youtuber who shares tips on building DIY projects without spending too much money. He’s already used the tinktube system to create many builds like a greenhouse roof, a studio, and a ladder rack. A few weeks ago, he decided to build a DIY camper trailer. We’ve rounded up the main steps of his project to provide you with a step-by-step building guide!

1. CREATING THE DIY TRAILER CAMPER DESIGNS

Tom’s friend Chad had an old trailer in his backyard which he didn’t use anymore. Tom’s plan: clean up the trailer and use it as the base for his project. This opportunity helped him save a lot of money right from the start, since he wouldn’t have to buy a trailer. If you don’t have already have one waiting in your backyard, you can easily find a used trailer for sale online. It’s a great way to lower the costs of buying a new one!

diy travel trailer deck

Tom then worked on the design of the trailer plans. He booked a free 15-minutes call with Esteban to get his advice on the plans he had already drawn and brainstormed ideas on how to improve his project. As Esteban pointed our during their discussion , one of the most convenient aspects of the tinktube building system is that it lets you do a lot of testing. You can build, unbuild, rebuild differently and adjust your project as much as you want during the building process. It makes it easier to get a better idea of the final results, and that’s exactly what Tom did.

2. DECONSTRUCTING THE TRAILER

Once the plans were ready, Tom and his son Trevor started a fun part of the project: the deconstruction of the unneeded and rotten elements of the trailer. They removed the corner brackets and the wood frame, then started on the bottom boards. Since they didn’t need that much thickness in the floor, they chose to remove the trailer’s wood floor. It also reduced the overall weight of the material fixed to the trailer.

diy travel trailer deck

Then they took a break and had a quick snow fight.

Tom and Trevor having a snow fight while building a DIY trailer camper.

They got back to work and used the grinder to cut off the parts of the trailer they didn’t need. They took off the front edge so they could make the floor of the new DIY trailer longer than it originally was. When that was done, Tom cleaned up the sharp spots with a wire cup brush, paying special attention to the rusted parts. He hand-sanded and primed the bare metal spots of the trailer where he knew he was not going to be welding.

Check out all the steps of Tom and Trevor’s DIY trailer camper build video on GreenShortz’ Youtube Channel!

3. DIY TRAILER CAMPER RETROFITTING

Tom and Trevor used the grinder and welding retrofitting methods to widen and expand the interior space of the trailer. For the extensions, they used metal cut offs from the trailer as well as salvaged and drop-room steel from their local metal store. Once Trevor was done preparing the surface with the grinder, Tom started the welding process. He used the salvaged scrap angle iron to make the frame longer and some of the mesh part from the ramp to create the back end of the trailer.

diy travel trailer deck

Tom’s tips from the community: On colder days, preheat the area around the weld joint before starting to weld to reduce the cooling rate of the weld and drive out moisture. It’ll prevent cracking and hydrogen buildup. Tom used a propane torch to do so!

After light sanding the surfaces, Tom and Trevor started the 4-step paint process using rust reformer, primer, appliance epoxy and rubber undercoating. This helped prepare and protect the frame of their DIY travel camper.

When these steps were done, Tom and Trevor had reconfigured the trailer. After a whole lot of cutting, grinding, and painting, it was finally ready to build out! To see our DIYers in action, watch the complete video of the retrofitting process on Youtube.

4. REUSING ALUMINUM COMPOSITE MATERIAL TO MAKE THE FLOOR

Tom received his tinktube order in the mail and sorted out the connectors to get ready to build. He bought some connectors that are designed specifically to work with 3/4 in. electrical conduit , AKA EMT. Tom’s tip when building any project with the tinktube system: He buys a few more fittings than what he expects to use. Having spare parts helps him in case he needs to make changes along the building process.

If you’re looking to build your own project -whatever it is-, make sure to check out tinktube’s website Get Started section: It’s filled with useful information, videos and tutorials that will make it easy for you to understand how the system works and start building quickly!

diy travel trailer deck

To make the floor of his DIY trailer camper, Tom used some salvaged aluminum composite material (ACM) destined for the dumpster. He started by washing the surface, then measured and marked down where he was going to cut. He cut the ACM with a circular saw and placed the first piece at the front half of the camper trailer before making the final fitting once it was in place. Then, he measured, cut out the nose of the travel camper and put it in place too.

Tom’s tips: To cut the ACM more precisely, he created a cardboard template.

Once the parts were cut to fit the frame, Tom used EPDM rubber to create a gasket around the edges. Check out the YT video to see how Tom installed the rubber gasket . Tom’s friend Greg then jumped in to explain how to bend ACM using the route and fold method. This method involves cutting through the top layer of metal and then through the plastic. The final result leaves the last layer untouched, so you can then fold it together.

5. ADDING THE TINKTUBE SKELETON TO THE DIY TRAVEL TRAILER

Using 3/4 in. EMT conduit and tinktube’s connectors, Tom and Trevor were ready to start building the upper part of the frame for their DIY camper trailer. Tom created a flat spot on the conduit by using the jigsaw halfway through, then pounding it flat with a hammer. He fixed the conduit to the base frame with screws and placed it at the right angle. He then connected the pieces together using tinktube’s joints and adapters.

diy travel trailer deck

Making a few adjustments and changes along the way, Tom kept on building his DIY travel camper project. Tom’s tips when building with tinktube: when you are first placing the connectors on the frame, don’t fix them too tight. Make sure you leave enough space between the connectors and the pipes to move the structure a little bit if needed before tightening the screws. This will help you create a stronger, more stable structure.

Watch the detailed video of the tinktube skeleton build and see how Tom and Trevor worked with the system to create a customized frame for their DIY camper:

6. FIXING A FATAL FLAW IN THE DIY CAMPER

“My concern is your method of smashing the ends of the tubes and how they mount to the chassis. You have introduced facture points that with aerodynamic pressure and vibration will give you issues down the road, so to speak. Not to mention corrosion points…” – s2meister, Youtube follow er

This comment from Tom’s DIY community about his last video got him thinking. He realized his mistake, which he had initially planned to avoid with the use of brackets. He decided to fix the problem before moving along with the rest of the frame build.

He would also use the opportunity to add about an inch to the frame in height, so Trevor is not scrunched over when sitting in the trailer.

diy travel trailer deck

Making changes to the DIY camper along the way, thanks to an adaptable building system

So, Tom started working. He took the bolts out and cut out all the tabs. He then got the H8 connectors ready. The H8 connectors have flat ends, which Tom made in a rounded shape for the ones he would use at the nose of the trailer. He used the vice to bend the steel so it would fit perfectly with the shape.

diy travel trailer deck

Safety tip: To strengthen the frame, Tom added a through-bolt through the EMT conduit and the joints, at the corners and the top part of the frame. It’s the best way to lock down all the parts together and make sure the structure is as solid as it can be!

diy travel trailer deck

Tom then adjusted the angles of the DIY camper trailer frame to make it higher. He took some brackets off and adjusted the angles of the ¾ inch EMT . Changing the angles of the pipes brought another problem: some of the EMT became too long to fit the frame. Once again taking advantage of the evolutive feature of the system, Tom cut the EMT to make some adjustments. After a few cuts here and there, this part of the frame was final!

7. BUILDING THE DIY CAMPER KITCHEN SLIDE-OUT

In this video, Tom switched gears to work on the internal mechanism of the slide-out camper kitchen using the 1-inch tinktube pipe sliding over 3/4 EMT conduit.

First thing he had to do was figure out exactly where the slide for the drawer was going to be fixed on the camper. Once the slide was fixed, he used a tinktube pipe as a base rail: the drawer and everything else could then be mounted to it.

diy travel trailer deck

He marked the tube and installed the connectors on it first. He then placed spacers next to where each rivet would go through so they don’t pull the pipe out of alignment. He placed risers on all the tinktube brackets and installed the top rail. He used a tinktube pipe as the back rail, which would slide in and onto a piece of ¾ in’’ EMT conduit.

To stabilize the frame, Tom added a clamp on leg to the end of the slide out, with a rubber foot on the bottom to protect the end of the pipe. When he planned he countertop and the additional kitchen components, Tom decided he would make them removable. He also used a combination of the one-inch tinktube pipe and short sections of conduit as countertop risers. These sections would drop down into the vertical elements of the frame to make the kitchen counter taller.

diy travel trailer deck

Tom used these brackets to attach the counter drop down to the tinktube frame so he would be able to snap the surface onto the back rail and remove it easily whenever needed!

8. MAKING FOLDING COTS WITH HINGE BRACKETS

In this video, Tom and Trevor make folding cots using different tinktube hinge brackets. Hinge fittings have a larger opening that allows a plastic bushing to fit inside. The bushing allows the bracket to turn on the pipe. They used the HJ-12 and the HJ-23 brackets.

diy travel trailer deck

The goal was to have the cots fold up to the side, with a slide to allow people to get in and out of the trailer more easily and another one to allow Trevor (5.10″, pushing 6″) to lay down and stretch out.

Tom and Trevor assembled the fittings on the frame and added the pipes to create the cots.

Trevor assembles tinktube connectors.

Tom created a short foot for one specific end of the cot that would sit on the elevated portion of the floor that covers the kitchen. He arranged for the foot to sit on top of the bar and added a rubber foot to the end of the pipe to protect it.

rubber foot

Then, Tom used the HJ-12 bracket to create a leg that would tuck into the wall. After that, he set up a temporary sleeping surface using a rope so Trevor could climb in the trailer and test out his bed. The verdict: the project was a success!

Here’s a straightforward, step-by-step guide to help you start your DIY camper trailer project, ensuring readability and reliability in each step.

Choosing Your Base

The foundation of your DIY camper trailer is crucial. You can either start with a pre-existing trailer or build a frame from scratch.

  • Pre-existing Trailer: Look for a used trailer that fits your size requirements. This could be an old cargo trailer or even a flatbed trailer. Ensure the trailer is in good condition, checking for rust or structural damage.
  • Building From Scratch: If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need to design a frame that suits your needs. This requires welding skills and understanding trailer dynamics, including weight distribution and axle placement.

Designing Your Camper

Sketch out a rough design of your camper. Consider what you need in your space, such as sleeping areas, kitchen space, and storage. Remember, every inch counts in a small camper.

  • Maximize Space: Use foldable or multi-functional furniture. For example, a bed that converts into a seating area during the day.
  • Insulation: Proper insulation is crucial for comfort. Research the best types of insulation that fit your climate needs.

Building the Shell

Once you have your base and design, it’s time to start building.

  • Framing: Use lightweight yet durable materials for the frame, such as aluminum or wood.
  • Walls and Roof: Plywood is a popular choice for the walls and roof due to its durability and ease of use. Cover the exterior with a weather-resistant material, such as aluminum sheets or fiberglass.

Installing Essentials

Now, focus on installing the essentials for living.

  • Electrical System: You might want to install a simple electrical system for lighting and charging devices. Solar panels are an eco-friendly option.
  • Plumbing: If you plan to have a kitchen or bathroom, consider the complexity of adding plumbing. Portable water tanks and pumps can simplify this process.
  • Ventilation: Proper ventilation is crucial. Install roof vents or windows that open to ensure airflow.

Adding Personal Touches

This is where you make the space your own.

  • Interior Design: Choose materials and colors that make the space feel inviting. Lightweight materials are best to keep the trailer easy to tow.
  • Storage Solutions: Get creative with storage. Use the vertical space by installing shelves or cabinets.
  • Outdoor Add-ons: Consider adding an awning or outdoor kitchen space to extend your living area.

Building a DIY camper trailer is no small feat, but it’s a rewarding project that offers freedom and adventure. Take your time in each step, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from more experienced builders or join online communities for support.

RV Steps with a Platform: 8 Sturdy RV Entry Stairs

Travel Trailer with RV steps with a platform

RVs have most of the comforts of home, including bathrooms, kitchens and a cozy place to lounge. However, entering and exiting RVs can be difficult for many campers. Most of the entry stairs built on RVs are unstable and often hang high over the ground.

Replacing your standard RV steps with RV steps with a platform creates a safe, sturdy entrance to your camper. Below are the 8 best RV steps with a platform. Read on to find the right set for your RV.

  • 1.1 Econo RV Porch Step by Stromberg Carlson
  • 1.2 RV-Co Port-A-Steps
  • 1.3 RV-Co Port-a-Deck
  • 1.4 HCCR RV Decks & Stairs‘ StairSafe
  • 1.5 Sunrise Decks Kingston Series
  • 1.6 Sunrise Decks Sequoia Series
  • 2.1 Portable Wooden RV Steps with a Platform
  • 2.2 DIY RV Deck
  • 3.1 RV Step Cover
  • 3.2 Platform RV Step
  • 3.3 RV Step Stabilizer

RV Steps with a Platform for Sale

The following 6 RV staircases all feature a large upper platform. All of these steps are also made to be portable and easily come down or store away for travel.

Econo RV Porch Step by Stromberg Carlson

RV Steps with a Platform: Econo 3-Step

These fully assembled steps are super easy to set-up with a travel trailer or fifth wheel. To install, simply unfold the staircase and attach 6 lock braces to stabilize the stairs. Of course, the stairs can easily be folded back down to transport them between campgrounds.

These RV steps include a 16-inch deep half-platform in the place of the top step. An included handrail can be installed on either side of the stairs. 3-step and 2-step versions of the Econo Stairs are available to fit different height RV door frames.

RV-Co Port-A-Steps

RV Steps with a Platform: Port-A-Steps

Port-A-Steps simply attach to your existing top step to create folding RV steps with a platform on top.  The attachable handrails complete the lightweight and compact system that is easy to install or take down in seconds with no tools.

A secondary handrail can also be added on the other side of the stairs. Port-A-Steps are available in 2, 3, 4 and 5 step models to fit any height travel trailer or fifth wheel.

RV-Co Port-a-Deck

RV Steps with a Platform: Port-A-Deck

The Port-A-Deck platform is a proprietary system that simply folds in for transport and storage, but when expanded locks with gravity to create a secure and strong platform.  The deck is free-standing yet portable to allow for easy door level access to all types of recreational vehicles.

Attachable steps and handrails are also quick and easy to assemble without any tools. For campers who wish to use the platform as a porch, multiple decks can be joined together to create a super-sized deck.

Since many motorhomes have electric steps, which cannot be manually retracted, RV-Co also offers a Port-a-Deck extension.  This extension allows the electric steps to open and close under it without disrupting the existing steps.  The extension is 31 by 19 inches and attaches to the Port-A-Deck with a special bracket.

HCCR RV Decks & Stairs ‘ StairSafe

RV Steps with a Platform: StairSafe

RV Decks & Stairs is a joint venture between HCCR out of Fountain Hills, Arizona and Steel Works out of Henderson, Nevada. They make both RV steps without a deck (StairLite) and RV steps with a platform (StairSafe).

The StairSafe RV steps have stairs that can be set up as center, left side or right side entry. The entire unit assembles or disassembles in less than 5 minutes and fits in most RV storage compartments.

HCCR’s RV steps were also built with pets in mind. They have options for a pet ramp and a lockable gate to turn the deck into a kennel. If you are interested in RVing with pets, check out our list of the best dog friendly RVs on the market.

Sunrise Decks Kingston Series

RV Steps with a Platform: Sunrise Kingstone Series

Sunrise Decks’ Kingston Series Steps feature a 45 by 45 inch platform. The stairs are available in two different heights. The 24 series has a maximum height of 24 inches, and is a good fit for most Class A motorhomes.

While the 40 series has a longer maximum height and is suitable for travel trailers and fifth wheels. Both series have telescoping legs and adjustable steps allowing you to level the stairs with your RV. Sunrise Decks for RVs are portable and can be setup without any tools.

Sunrise Decks Sequoia Series

RV Steps with a Platform: Sunrise Sequoia Series

The Sequoia Series stairs by Sunrise Decks have similar features to the Kingston Series stairs, but feature a larger platform. The top deck on the Sequoia Series is 57 by 57 inches. The steps are also further away from the RV, allowing for two handrails.

DIY RV Steps with a Platform

If you are searching for wood RV steps with a platform or a full RV deck, considering building them yourself. Below are links to instructional videos from other RV campers who have built their own stairs.

DIY RV Steps with a Platform

Portable Wooden RV Steps with a Platform

YouTube creators RetiredRenewedRerouted created portable, wooden RV stairs with large, platform-style steps. They built the plywood stairs in pieces, so they can easily be taken down and stored in the back of the pickup truck during travel.

The top landing is built from 3 1×6 boards, while the lower steps are built from 2 1×6 boards. These steps cost just over $100 to make, which is significantly cheaper than any premade RV stairs. Watch their video for more details and instructions on creating your own DIY RV steps.

DIY RV Deck

If you are hoping for more than a platform, consider building a full deck off the side of your RV. Check out Caper Camper’s YouTube video with instructions on how to build an RV deck.

While their deck is not suitable for travel, it does move when you need to move the RV. A full DIY RV deck is perfect for campers who have an annual campsite or park their RV on their own property.

Other RV Step Products

If installing or building RV steps with a platform is too costly or time consuming, there are other ways to make your RV stairs safer and more stable.

RV Step Cover

Camco 42925-A Gray 18 Inch 42925 18' Rv Step Rug-Grey

Most RV steps are made of metal, and easily become slippery in wet and cold weather. Wrapping your RV stairs with step covers, creates better traction for campers entering the RV.

Covers, like the Camco Step Rug, also help to cut down the amount of dirt tracked into the RV. Camco’s covers are weather and mildew resistant, so they can be left, on even in the rain.

Platform RV Step

Camco Adjustable Height RV Step Stool (43676)

Platform steps are sturdy platforms meant to be placed at the bottom of fold-down RV stairs. Platform steps, like the Camco one pictured above, provide a stable last step when exiting the RV.

RV Step Stabilizer

Camco Self Stor RV Step Brace | Provides Additional RV Step Stability | 1,000lb Weight Rating (43671)

Also made by Camco, the Self-Stor Save-A-Step is an under step mount to stabilize RV stairs. This under-mounted stabilizer is secured under the bottom step like a jack, in order to secure the stairs and prevent rocking.

Keeping the RV stairs stabilized also prevents sag and wear over time. The stabilizer is made from heavy-gauge steel with a 3/4 inch solid metal screw thread and has a 1000 pound rating.

  • Build the standard flatbed, or choose on of the sides options — permanent or removable — also in the plans.  Sides options have variations, including options for tie-downs, rub rails, stake pockets, etc..
  • Ramps are an option — Choose ramps that slide in (and store) under the deck (or not), then choose the ramp length and capacity you need.
  • Design includes options for a raised front rail (or not), and a tongue tray for special tools (or not).
  • The download package includes the full set of drawings along with illustrated instructions and CAD files for laser or water jet cutting of the tail plate and other option parts.
  • We provide the plans complete, the way we would want to receive them.  We think they are much more complete and more detailed than any of our competitors.

Trailer building requires metal working skill and tools for things like cutting, drilling, and accurate set-up, as well as welding skill.  Strength, durability, and enjoyment depend on building the trailer well.  Build it well, then Enjoy the Finished Project !!

Notes for Success

* Trailer load capacity depends on all the parts and materials, as well as the craftsmanship in building.  All Mechanical Elements trailers are engineered to perform as stated when built as defined with proper care in construction – including parts, material, construction techniques, weld integrity, assembly methods, and finishing.  Capacity for this trailer also requires proper choices for parts such as the hitch, axle(s), wheels, tires, safety chain, decking, bolts, pins, etc.  Please make sure component load capacities match or exceed the trailer total capacity.  Do not exceed manufacturers limits .

For trouble-free trailer life, think care and safety.  Please select fastening methods to handle how and where the trailer will operate – including vibration, proper fastener types, bolt grades, torques, and nut types (like lock nuts).  Then, be smart about loading the trailer, load distribution, tire pressure, tire condition and the mechanics of towing.  We want you safe to enjoy your trailer for a long time ahead.   Always use proper safety and securing equipment when loading and towing a trailer .

Thank You — The Mechanical Elements Team
