renaissance world tour list of songs

The Bey-aissance has arrived.

After more than two months of traversing Europe with her six-part, nearly three-hour show, Beyoncé has landed in the U.S. with the Renaissance World Tour .

Five-plus years since she last graced a concert stage, Beyoncé played for more than 1 million fans on her opening run overseas and will perform 23 stadium shows in the U.S., which started July 12 in Philadelphia.

Her setlist of nearly three dozen songs leans heavily on her current "Renaissance" album , but there are plenty of throwbacks, with "Crazy in Love," "Love on Top" and "Formation" joining new tracks including "Plastic Off the Sofa," "Cozy" and "Break My Soul."

Here’s a look at what fans can expect when Beyoncé's Renaissance hits their city.

What songs are on Beyoncé's Renaissance Tour setlist?

Will Beyoncé change the Renaissance World Tour setlist at all?

Unless Beyoncé announces another leg to the tour, the show is now complete and, outside of 'Thique', 'All Up In Your Mind' and 'Drunk In Love' only being performed at select dates, there were no drastic changes to the setlist.

At the start of the tour, there was speculation that Beyoncé might edit the setlist based on the official tour programme. It had an image of what looked like a draft of the setlist for the show. Most of the songs listed in the photo appeared in the show. However, the left side of the photo contained a long list of songs, many of which weren't performed.

It now appears that Beyoncé simply edited the setlist down and gave fans a glimpse of songs that were considered for the show but didn't make the final cut.

What Is Beyoncé’s Setlist Of Songs For The ‘Renaissance Tour?’

Derrick Rossignol

Beyoncé’s long-awaited Renaissance tour kicked off at Friends Arena in Solna, Sweden today (May 10), so one of the biggest questions on fans’ minds is finally being answered: What songs will Beyoncé perform?

Before the show began, fans noticed what appeared to be a setlist in the Renaissance tour book , and as photos and videos of that were shared online, it brought anticipation to a high. The book also offered plenty of photos indicating what some of the tour aesthetics would look like.

This tour could be a big one: Forbes recently reported , “Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter — also known as Queen Bey — could clear nearly $2.2 billion from her Renaissance World Tour — some $600 million more than the $1.6 billion Taylor Swift could earn from Eras . Those eyepopping estimates are based on the most optimistic assumptions of the number of fans buying tickets at their concerts and high average ticket prices of about $700.”

As of this post, the concert is ongoing. Check out the setlist for the Sweden concert so far ( via Variety ) below.

1. “Dangerously In Love” 2. “Flaws And All” 3. “1+1” / “I’d Rather Go Blind” / “I’m Going Down” 4. “I Care” 5. “I’m That Girl” 6. “Cozy” 7. “Alien Superstar” / “Sweet Dreams” / “Lift Off” 8. “Cuff It” 9. “Energy” 10. “Break My Soul” 11. “No Angel” (Interlude) 12. “Formation” 13. “Diva” 14. “Run the World (Girls)” 15. “My Power” 16. “Black Parade” 17. “Savage” (Megan Thee Stallion remix) 18. “Partition” 19. “Church Girl” 20. “Get Me Bodied” 21. “Before I Let Go” 22. “Rather Die Young” 23. “Love On Top” 24. “Crazy In Love” 25. “Green Light” 26. “Freedom” 27. “Plastic Off The Sofa” 28. “Virgo’s Groove 29. “Naughty Girl” 30. “Move” 31. “Heated” 32. “Already” 33. “Kitty Kat” 34. “Flawless” 35. “Find Your Way Back” 36. “Heard About Us” 37. “Thique” 38. “All Up In Your Mind” 39. “Drunk In Love” 40. “Single Ladies” 41. “America Has A Problem” 42. “Pure/Honey” 43. “Blow” 44. “Summer Renaissance”

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour Setlist Includes Classics & Surprises

Please do not be alarmed, remain calm, do not attempt to leave the dance floor — Beyoncé ’s 2023 Renaissance World Tour has commenced. On May 10, members of the Beyhive traveled to Stockholm, Sweden, to witness the opening night of her first tour in five years. This marks the first time the 32-time Grammy winner has performed songs from her seventh studio album Renaissance , which have not received any music videos or live performances until now.

Since her last tour in 2018, Beyoncé released the critically acclaimed Renaissance album , her first solo effort in seven years, but that’s not the only new music she’s given fans. In 2019, she put out The Lion King: The Gift , a soundtrack inspired by Disney’s live-action film in which she plays Nala, before releasing a companion film Black Is King a year later. With so many new songs to fit alongside her older hits, creating the Renaissance Tour setlist was always going to be a challenge, but Beyoncé came through with a 35-song spectacle that lasted almost three hours.

Beyoncé played the entirety of Renaissance in order, including Grammy-winning hits “Break My Soul” and “Cuff It,” and mixed in classics from all of her previous six albums throughout. But the show didn’t start that way. Instead, Bey opened the tour with a run of surprising ballads, starting with her 2003 deep cut “Dangerously In Love 2” and ending with two tracks from her 2011 album 4 . If this rough setlist draft from the tour book is any indication, she may be rotating the songs in the opening act every night.

After months of creating dream setlists and imagining the camp visuals she could create, fans finally know what Beyoncé is performing on her long-awaited world tour.

Here is Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour setlist.

The international music sensation dropped dance album 'Renaissance' in July last year with songs like 'Break My Soul' and 'Alien Superstar', breaking the internet before she broke records by becoming the artist with the most Grammy awards (32!).

Who is Beyoncé's support act on the 'Renaissance' tour?

In true Beyoncé style, Queen Bey has headed on tour without a support act - meaning more bops from the leading lady herself!

Her three-hour long show consists of three sections; the first of which brings back the classic Bey tunes 'Dangerously in Love', 'Flaws and All', '1+1' and 'I Care' – slower ballads before she enters the 'Renaissance' chapter; Bey really is her own opener.

This comes after fans attempted to make predictions about who her 'Renaissance' support act would be, with a strong contender being Chloe Bailey whose debut album came out just two months ago. Chloe X Halle are signed to Bey's record label Parkwood Entertainment after all.

UK fans were also hoping for girl band FLO after they broke out into the industry last year while 'Free Mind' singer Tems is also a name we saw pop up a lot in fans' predictions.

What time does Beyoncé's concert start and how long is she on for?

Beyoncé hits the stage at around 7.30PM for an epic show that lasts around two and a half hours.

Ever the professional, Bey's outfit changes between acts are as rapid as can be, so time those toilet breaks wisely!

Whether you managed to score tickets or just want to live vicariously through those that did, Beyoncé ‘s Renaissance tour setlist is one for the ages. Beyoncé —whose full name is Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter—debuted with the girl group Destiny’s Child in 1996 along with fellow members Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. The band—whose final line-up consisted of Beyoncé, Rowland and Michelle Williams—went on to sell more than 60 million records worldwide and become of the most successful artists of the 2000s for hits like “Survivor,” “Independent Women,” “Bootylicious,” “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name.”

Beyoncé  made her solo debut in 2003 with her first single “Crazy in Love” featuring her now-husband, Jay-Z. The song, which was featured on Beyoncé’s debut album  Dangerously in Love , reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and led to other hits like “Check on It,” “Deja Vu” and “Me, Myself and I.” Since  Dangerously in Love , Beyoncé has released six more albums: 2006’s  B’Day , 2008’s  I Am… Sasha Fierce , 2011’s  4 , 2013’s  Beyoncé , 2016’s  Lemonade  and 2022’s  Renaissance.

The album—also titled  Act I: Renaissance —is the first act of a trilogy project Beyoncé started during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving,” Beyoncé explained in an Instagram post on June 30, 2022. “My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration. I hope you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are.”

Who is Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour opening act?

Who is Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour opening act? Rolling Stone ‘s review of the Stockholm show revealed that the show jumps straight into Beyoncé’s performance: “The show had a twist start: Instead of throwing a Studio 54-esque party right off the bat, Yoncé arrived on stage in a gold suit with her band, a giant, heavenly cloud scene on the stage-wide screen behind her. She sang “Dangerously in Love,” a song she hasn’t performed live since 2009, and a ballad,” the writer wrote. “It was like she was her own opening act (there were no other opening acts, for the record)”. However, The New York Post reported in February 2023 that there were rumors singer and model Grace Jones would join her on tour. Jones has modeled for fashion brands like Yves St. Laurent and Kenzo, as well as magazines like Elle and Vogue. She’s also a new-wave singer best known for songs like “Private Life,” “Pull up to the Bumper,” “I’ve Seen That Face Before” and “Slave to the Rhythm.” Jones is also featured on Beyoncé’s song “Move” from her 2022 album, Renaissance .

Beyonce’s ‘Renaissance’ Tour Setlist Revealed: All The Songs Played On Opening Night

Beyonce is back! Discover the setlist for her 2023 Renaissance tour, her show dates, and more here.

Beyonce tour

  • Beyonce is the most decorated Grammy winner of all time, with 32 trophies to her name
  • She kicked off her 2023 Renaissance tour in support of her 2022 album of the same name in May 2023
  • The Renaissance tour sweeps through Europe in May and June, and then plays in North America through September

Ladies (and gents), it’s time to get into “Formation”, because Beyonce officially kicked off her highly-anticipated Renaissance tour . The 41-year-old artist began her 50-plus-date tour, which supports her four-time Grammy Award-winning album 2022 album Renaissance , at the Friends Arena in Stockholm, Sweden on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. This is her first solo tour since her 49-stop 2016 Formation tour , which ended at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and featured surprise appearances by Kendrick Lamar and her husband, Jay-Z . She then embarked on a joint tour with Jay-Z in 2018 to support their joint album, Everything Is Love . Beyonce spent some quality time with her family following the tour and then returned to the stage after a three-year hiatus via an extravagant concert in Dubai in Jan. 2023.

Beyonce’s Renaissance tour is projected to gross a whopping $2.1 billion on the low end, per Forbes . The outlet reported that the Renaissance tour could earn as much as $2.4 billion by its final show in Sept. 2023, which would out-earn the projected gross of   Taylor Swift ‘s wildly popular Eras Tour by $500 million. Now that’s impressive. Enough about the numbers; let’s dive into everything there is to know about Queen Bey’s Renaissance tour, from the set list to the tour dates and beyond.

The Renaissance tour is pretty epic. according to Rolling Stone . The outlet reported that the set list includes “era-bending mash-ups” and incredible props, including “two swinging robot arms outfitted with two big rectangles that perfectly framed and moved with Beyoncé as she sauntered through the Renaissance highlight.” The robot arms made their debut during the global superstar’s performance of “Cozy”. They came out again to scan a stained-glass graphic onto her white cape ahead of her “Church Girl” performance. She ended the tour by riding the metallic horse that appeared in her promo shots as she sang, “Summer Renaissance”., as seen above. Oh, and did we mention she performs for about three hours? Without giving away too many more spoilers, let’s see the setlist.

What Has Beyonce Said About The Tour?

Beyonce has kept her lips sealed about all things Renaissance. When she announced her tour on Instagram , she simply wrote , “RENAISSANCEㅤ ㅤWORLD TOUR 2023” in the caption. And following her first show, she shared a compilation of clips from the unforgettable night (seen here ), and wrote, “Welcome to the RENAISSANCE”.

Beyoncé Renaissance World Tour: The songs and other best moments from the opening night

“Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the iconic mother of the house of Renaissance, Beyoncé!”

So began the intro to THIQUE, the 30th song on the first night of Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, which began in Stockholm on Wednesday.

Titled after the global megastar’s post-pandemic dance album of the same name, the two hours and 50-minute spectacle featured no fewer than 36 of her biggest hits. Beyoncé also had nine outfit changes, rode a giant, glitter-encrusted horse, sang from inside a giant clam, and flew through the crowds to close out the night.

The 57-date stadium tour is projected to gross as much as £1.9 billion ($2.4bn) by the time it ends in New Orleans in late September.

Queen Bey opened her first solo headline tour since 2016 in a custom metallic suit courtesy of Alexander McQueen, and thanked the crowd for being with her on the tour’s opening night.

“You could have been anywhere in the world tonight but you choose to be here with me,” she said, before launching into a rousing rendition of her 2003 hit Dangerously in Love.

In a move only Beyoncé could pull off, she was her own opening act, giving the crowds three more of her older power ballad hits — Flaws and All, 1+1 and I Care. The “main act” then took to the stage, as Beyoncé launch into a Studio 54-esque Renaissance party.

Futuristic alien couture was the aesthetic for the Renaissance portion of the night. The Texan singer characteristically pushed the boundaries of 21st-century performance technology, notably with a dress that changed colour when exposed to UV light.

Another fan favourite was the giant sequined horse Beyoncé flew around on for the show’s epic finale, as well as the bouncing antennae her dancers mounted to be flung around all corners of the stage.

Beyoncé performing her "Renaissance" world tour in Stockholm.

Let the “Renaissance” commence.

Beyoncé kicked off her highly anticipated world tour Wednesday at Friends Arena in Stockholm.

The music superstar uncharacteristically opened her nearly three-hour concert with slower favorites like “Dangerously in Love 2” and “I Care.” She then performed upbeat “Renaissance” cuts including “Alien Superstar” and “Cuff It.”

Greatest hits such as “Formation,” “Love on Top” and “Crazy in Love” followed before the night closed out with “Summer Renaissance.” (See the complete 36-song setlist below.)

Page Six broke the news in September 2022 that Beyoncé was taking her “Renaissance” album on the road .

She officially announced the 50-plus-date tour in February, revealing an itinerary that includes stops in London, Amsterdam, Chicago, New York City, Atlanta, Los Angeles and New Orleans, among other metropolises.

Forbes reported Monday that Beyoncé’s latest global trek could out-earn Taylor Swift’s ongoing Eras Tour by a whopping $500 million with an estimated gross of nearly $2.1 billion, which would make it the most successful concert series of all time.

Beyoncé, 41, has described “Renaissance” as the first part of a “three-act project,” though it is unclear what else she has in store for her Beyhive.

Here Are All the Songs in Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Movie

Special guests Blue Ivy Carter, Kendrick Lamar, Diana Ross and more appear in the documentary

beyonce-grammys Renaissance

Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” documentary lands in theaters on December 1, just in time for the last month of a year full of women dominating the box office. Unlike “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” Beyoncé’s concert film provides both clips of her concerts as well as behind-the-scenes production and preparation for the stadium tour in support of her seventh album.

Certain songs were cut from the concert playlist, while others were added, and several guest performers such as Kendrick Lamar and Diana Ross — who both joined Beyoncé for her birthday show in Los Angeles on Sept. 4 — made it into the documentary. Megan Thee Stallion’s guest star appearance at the Houston show also made it into the movie. Blue Ivy Carter’s dance moves to “My Power” at certain shows was also spotlighted in the documentary. The audience serenading Beyoncé to “Love on Top” was cut in favor of other pieces of the film. So were songs like “1+1,” a cover of Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Goin’ Down” mixed with “I Care,” “No Angel,” “Haunted,” “Yoncé,” “Rather Die Young” and “Blow.”

Additions not on the initial setlist include “River Deep, Mountain High, “Love Hangover by Diana Ross,” “Kitty Kat” and the addition of “Love to Love You Baby” mixed with “Naughty Girl.” Lamar joined for “America Has a Problem” which Beyoncé sang solo at previous shows.

Beyoncé

From her splashy first hits as a soloist to her later experiments with house music and country, Beyoncé always sticks the landing — even upwards of three decades into her career.

But before we dive into her biggest hits as the mononymous, standalone performer the world knows her as today, it’s important to note that Bey had already scored four No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 well before to her solo debut. How? Say their name: Destiny’s Child, where she got her start alongside Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. The R&B trio notched a total of 14 entries on the chart — 10 of which were top 10 hits — before disbanding in 2006.

When she later set her sights on a one-woman endeavor, Bey was an immediate success. The Houston native’s first-ever solo single, “Crazy in Love” — recorded with future husband Jay-Z — spent a whopping eight weeks at No. 1 in 2003 and remains one of her biggest hits to date.

Since then, Ms. Carter has continued to top the charts with singles such as 2005’s “Check On It” with Slim Thug, 2006’s “Irreplaceable” and 2008’s “Single Ladies.” The same goes for her tracks that either pushed the boundaries of pop/R&B or shed the genre’s label altogether, with the twangy “Texas Hold ‘Em,” for instance, making Bey the first Black woman to ever top the Hot Country Songs chart in addition to ruling at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for two weeks.

The most decorated Grammy winner of all time, Beyoncé’s music has defined generations — and continues to do so. Keep reading to see her 30 biggest hits on the Billboard Hot 100 — so far, that is.

Beyoncé’s Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hits ranking is based on weekly performance on the Hot 100 through March 23, 2024. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at lower spots earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, eras are weighted differently to account for chart turnover rates during various periods.

Everything We Know About Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus' New Song "II Most Wanted"

The drop of Bey's Cowboy Carter  track list revealed the former  Voice  Coach is featured!

renaissance world tour list of songs

It's a great day for Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus fans.

How to Watch

Watch  The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

After weeks of speculation, it's  officially confirmed that the former  Voice  Coach ( Seasons 11 and 13) has collaborated with Queen Bey on the Renaissance  singer's anticipated eighth album,  Cowboy Carter , which drops Friday, March 29 at midnight in the U.S. Find out everything you need to know, below.

Miley Cyrus featured on Beyoncé's new song, “II Most Wanted”

Though  Cowboy Carter  officially drops in North America at midnight, New Zealand and Australia markets have already gained access to the album's full track list, with features. This is how some fans were able to already spot that Cyrus was apart of the project's 16th track, "II Most Wanted."

RELATED:  Revisit Miley Cyrus' Famous Cover of Her Godmother Dolly Parton's Hit "Jolene"

We'll have to wait until 12:00 a.m. ET to hear the official version, but the collab marks the first time the two genre-crossing Grammy winners have released an original song together. However, the artists sang together in 2008 for a Stand Up to Cancer charitable concert in which Cyrus, Beyoncé, and 11 other female vocalists (Keyshia Cole, Leona Lewis, Fergie, Ciara, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Carrie Underwood, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, and Nicole Scherzinger) all came together to sing original song "Just Stand Up!"

“What I remember most from doing this performance is I was standing in between two of the big legends and icons that I was looking up to at the time, and they treated me like a little sister the entire time,” Cyrus said about Beyoncé and Rihanna in her “Used to Be Young” TikTok series. “They were being really sweet.”

Split of Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus

She continued, "I got brackets on the back of my teeth, and I’m singing with Beyoncé.”

Cyrus may have hinted at her iconic impending collab when she shared a photo on March 1 of herself wearing a Louis Vuitton cowboy hat . The fashion choice mirrored Beyoncé herself, who has been seen wearing multiple different cowboy hats in the lead-up to the drop of  Cowboy Carter , which is inspired by country music.

"This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive," Bey wrote in a lengthy caption earlier this month. "I have a few surprises on the album, and have collaborated with some brilliant artists who I deeply respect. I hope that you can hear my heart and soul, and all the love and passion that I poured into every detail and every sound."

How can I listen to Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus' new song “II Most Wanted?"

The full  Cowboy Carter  album, including "II Most Wanted," will be available to listen to wherever you can stream music at midnight on Friday, March 29.

Below is the full  Cowboy Carter  track list to hold you over instead. Cyrus' godmother and her  Miley’s New Year's Eve Party   collaborator, Dolly Parton, will also be featured on the album. Parton has a special interlude titled "Dolly P." The Texas native is also covers Parton's hit "Jolene," which Cyrus herself has also famously done (multiple times)  to acclaim.

Know we're jumpin' the gun, but we're both still young One day, we won't be Didn't know what I want 'til I saw your face Said goodbye to the old me Came out of nowhere, didn't give no warnin' Pedal so heavy like the  two most wanted And I don't know what you're doin' tonight But I

I'll be your shotgun rider 'til the day I die Smoke out the window flyin' down the 405 I'll be your backseat baby, drivin' you crazy Anytime you like Woah, I'll be your shotgun rider 'til the day I 'Til the day I die

Making waves in the wind with my empty hand My other hand on you Been a while since I haven't tried to pull away But it's time for something new

Came out of nowhere, didn't give no warnin' Pedal so heavy like the two most wanted And I don't know what you're doin' tonight But I

Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Is Here, and It’s Much More Than Country

The superstar’s new LP is a 27-track tour of popular music with a Beatles cover, cameos by Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, and features from Miley Cyrus and Post Malone.

Beyoncé has gone country, sure … but it turns out that’s only the half of it.

For months, the superstar, who made her name in R&B and pop, has been telegraphing her version of country music and style. There was the “disco” cowboy hat at her Renaissance World Tour last year, and her “ western ” look at the Grammys in February, complete with a white Stetson and black studded jacket. Then, on the night of the Super Bowl, she released two new songs, and sent one of them, “Texas Hold ’Em” — with plucked banjos and lines about Texas and hoedowns — to country radio stations, sparking an industrywide debate about the defensive moat that has long surrounded Nashville’s musical institutions.

At midnight on Friday, Beyoncé finally released her new album, “Cowboy Carter,” and the country bona fides were certainly there. Dolly Parton provides a cameo introduction to Beyoncé’s version of “Jolene,” Parton’s 1972 classic about a woman confronting a romantic rival. Willie Nelson pops in twice as a grizzled D.J., who says he “turns you on to some real good [expletive],” including snippets of Chuck Berry, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the blues singer Son House.

Yet “Cowboy Carter” is far broader than simply a country album. Beyoncé does a version of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” and, on the track “Ya Ya,” draws from Nancy Sinatra and the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations.” “Desert Eagle” is glistening funk, and the upbeat “Bodyguard” would not be out of place on a modern rock radio station. The album’s range suggests a broad essay on contemporary pop music, and on the nature of genre itself.

That theory is made clear on the partly spoken track “Spaghettii,” featuring the pioneering but long absent Black country singer Linda Martell , who in 1970 released an album called “Color Me Country.”

“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they? Yes, they are,” Martell, 82, says. “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand. But in practice, well, some may feel confined.”

Of course, Beyoncé herself indicated this a week ago when she posted a note on Instagram saying: “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”

Still, the theme of simultaneously celebrating and transforming country music extends to the album’s cover art, featuring Beyoncé seated sideways on a white horse, dressed in red-white-and-blue rodeo gear and hoisting an American flag.

Guests on the album include Miley Cyrus on the song “II Most Wanted,” and Post Malone on “Levii’s Jeans.” (The extra I’s underscore that “Cowboy Carter” is officially “Act II” of what Beyoncé has said will be a three-album cycle, which began with “Renaissance” in 2022. That motif repeats throughout the album’s 27-song track list. The Beatles cover — where she is joined by a quartet of young Black female country singers — Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts and Tiera Kennedy — is rendered as “Blackbiird.”) Midway through the track “Daughter,” Beyoncé even flexes some opera skills, singing a bit of “Caro Mio Ben,” a popular 18th-century Italian aria. ( More on that here .)

In a statement, Beyoncé described the sonic texture of the album, differentiating it from the synthesized process behind most contemporary pop albums (including her own).

“With artificial intelligence and digital filters and programming, I wanted to go back to real instruments, and I used very old ones,” she said. “I didn’t want some layers of instruments like strings, especially guitars, and organs perfectly in tune. I kept some songs raw and leaned into folk.”

As with “Renaissance,” the audio for “Cowboy Carter” was leaked online shortly before its planned release, with some fans urging others not to listen early.

Back when Beyoncé released her self-titled “visual album” without warning in 2013, establishing the “surprise drop” as an industry trope, it was partly meant to protect the album from leaks, which had become a threat to first-week sales numbers. For these last two albums, Beyoncé has embraced a more conventional marketing plan, announcing her album weeks ahead of time and preparing deluxe physical editions. (There are many for “Cowboy Carter,” including LPs in, yes, red, white and blue vinyl.)

In the end, the leaks meant little to “Renaissance,” which went straight to No. 1 . And, regardless of the new album’s fate at country radio — where “Texas Hold ’Em” has so far made it only as high as No. 33 — the commercial potential for “Cowboy Carter” seems vast, given Beyoncé’s recent success.

Last year, she won her 32nd Grammy Award , more than any artist in history. Her Renaissance tour sold $580 million in tickets, second only to Taylor Swift. A related concert film, “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” offered a rare look behind the scenes of her creative process and was a hit in cinemas.

Last week, as the release of “Cowboy Carter” neared, Beyoncé wrote on Instagram that the album was “over five years in the making,” and that “it was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn’t.” Fans zeroed in on her appearance at the Country Music Association Awards in 2016, where she performed her song “Daddy Lessons” with the Chicks, and drew backlash online .

“The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me,” Beyoncé said. The new album, she added, “is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of an earlier Beyoncé song. It is “Daddy Lessons,” not “Daddy Issues.”

Cowboy Carter is the hotly anticipated follow-up to to Beyoncé's 2022 album, Renaissance .

How long have fans been speculating over the details of Beyoncé 's new album? It depends when you start counting: Some began buzzing over it the second her previous record, the dance-centric Renaissance , was released in 2022 and touted as "act one" of a trilogy. But the chatter has been especially fervent in the past two months, as singles, visuals and other teases popped up during the Grammys, Super Bowl and on the artist's own social media. The Beyhive's busiest bees analyzed clues that pointed toward a country music-inspired sound; they dissected the history of that genre, and how Black musicians have often been written out of it.

After months of anticipation, Cowboy Carter has finally arrived. Is it a country album? In many ways, yes — but it's also a sprawling work filled with disparate influences and references, while remaining a Beyoncé album at its heart. Two NPR Music staffers, reporter Sidney Madden and editor Sheldon Pearce , have been listening since the stroke of midnight. They come to you now with the 10 most important things to know about exactly what Cowboy Carter is, and is not.

Beyoncé's new album is inspired by backlash to her entering the country music genre

Beyoncé's new album is inspired by backlash to her entering the country music genre

1. It's a sprawling Western epic...

Just as Beyoncé's 2022 album, act i: RENAISSANCE , served as a world-building homage to the unsung Black queer youth who created house music, Cowboy Carter continues the lesson plan. In a statement soon after the album's worldwide release, the artist's Parkwood Entertainment shared that each song on the 27-track project is its own version of a reimagined Western film: "She took inspiration from films like Five Fingers for Marseilles , Urban Cowboy , The Hateful Eight , Space Cowboys , The Harder They Fall and Killers of the Flower Moon , often having the films playing on a screen during the recording process."

Each track, whether an interlude, collaboration or poignant solo, rides out like a full-length film full of scenic grandeur, character and conflicts that any Chitlin' Circuit aficionado or spaghetti Western cinephile can obsess over. As a whole, Cowboy Carter serves as a well of discovery, full of samples, sonic Easter eggs, Knowles family callbacks and, most importantly, an appreciation for pioneers in the country world.

2. ... with a searing image of its titular central character.

In the cowboy, Beyoncé finds her ideal figure of the American West and South. She cites the rodeo as the first place where anyone who loved country music and culture could gather and mingle and feel welcome. It's an image that runs counter to the experience that inspired the album: performing her song "Daddy Lessons" at the CMA Awards in 2016, where she has said she "did not feel welcomed ... and it was very clear that I wasn't." The Cowboy Carter character exists in conversation with the history of Black cowboys, the loaded meaning behind the term and its function in the American imagination.

Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. Could her success help other Black women?

Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. could her success help other black women.

3. It's a country album...

There are plenty of categorically country sounds on Cowboy Carter . String instruments are its sonic heartbeat, and the do-si-do of the slide guitar on "DESERT EAGLE" and "TEXAS HOLD 'EM" feel perfectly matched with Bey's feathery vocals. The jovial wiggle of the accordions on "RIIVERDANCE" tip a hat to zydeco music and the artist's Creole heritage. "PROTECTOR" (featuring Beyoncé's youngest daughter, Rumi) is anchored by acoustic guitar. "SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN' " interpolates "I Fall to Pieces," the shuffling standard made famous by Patsy Cline . Compared to Bey's past work in an R&B world full of glitz and glamor, many moments on the album, even with their layered arrangements, feel like intimate jam sessions straight out of a Nashville writing camp.

4. ... and it's also not.

Across the track list, elements of hip-hop, bluegrass and Chicano rock, with pop, rock, Jersey club music and operatic runs. "YA YA" conjures the charisma of Tina Turner and Chuck Berry , while winking in the direction of Nancy Sinatra and The Beach Boys . "BODYGUARD" is a breezy surf-rock romp with Latin percussion and a little whiskey on its breath. "AMEN" rings to the rafters in true gospel splendor. "SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN' " stacks genre upon genre and yet never overwhelms, instead connecting the dots between them with dusty horse gallops. The production credits stretch far beyond the scope of country stalwarts, making the album a treasure hunt for fans and issuing a challenge to the ways country music has come to be defined.

5. It's got country and Americana icons to set the tone...

Voices from country lore appear throughout the track list, signposts for the album's deconstructions of genre. The outlaw country pioneer Willie Nelson , who once bucked the Nashville sound himself, stands in as the host of KNTRY Radio Texas, Beyoncé's fictional pirate station. Dolly Parton draws a line from Becky with the good hair to Jolene, and turns up again before "TYRANT," encouraging Beyoncé to light up a juke joint. In a prelude to one of the album's most adventurous cuts, "SPAGHETTII," Linda Martell, an undersung, trailblazing Black country star of the '70s, lays out a sort of mission statement: "Genres are a funny little concept, aren't they? Yes, they are. In theory, they have a simple definition that's easy to understand. But in practice, well, some may feel confined."

6. ... and it's flipping some old tropes.

There are covers of country classics here that stand out for how stealthily they're reimagined. Parton's 1973 hit "Jolene" shows up early in the album, but Beyoncé adds her own sauce to flip its storied narrative. A vigilant Bey (flip-flopping between being upset and unbothered) clocks the "bird" chirping round her man; unlike Dolly, who responds to a similar threat with a plea for mercy, she puts her rival on notice: " I'm warnin' you, woman, find you your own man / Jolene, I know I'm a queen, Jolene / I'm still a Creole banjee bitch from Louisianne ." This twist renegotiates the common push and pull of rolling-stone / damsel-in-distress infidelity that's historically been a hallmark in country standards, and has only recently started to shift (see also: Carrie Underwood 's "Before He Cheats").

Jay-Z and Beyoncé's blank space: The endless social climb of pop's royal couple

Jay-Z and Beyoncé's blank space

7. It gives flowers to unsung pioneers.

When Linda Martell shows up in the opening moments of "SPAGHETTII" to pose her question about genres, the slick rhetorical framing cuts to the main conceit of Cowboy Carter and centers Martell herself as a case in point. As a pioneer in the country space, Martell made history with her 1970 album, Color Me Country , and was the first Black woman to perform on the storied Grand Ole Opry. But because of the racist aggression she endured when moving from pop to country, Martell soon left the business. Now, at 82 years old, Martell's getting her due. Her voice is immortalized on both "SPAGHETTII" and "THE LINDA MARTELL SHOW," both tracks that play hopscotch with a range of genres. "I am proud that Beyoncé is exploring her country music roots," the veteran posted on Instagram . "What she is doing is beautiful, and I'm honored to be a part of it. It's Beyoncé, after all!"

8. It shines a light on the stars of country's new age.

A recent study tracking country music programming from 2000 through 2020 revealed that only 29% of country songs played on format radio were by women artists, and of that 29%, 0.01% were Black women. And so along with honoring pioneers, Cowboy Carter platforms new stars in the field who are still working their way through its entrenched gatekeeping and redlining.

Rhiannon Giddens strums her banjo on the album's lead single, "TEXAS HOLD 'EM." Virginia's Shaboozey, whose 2022 release, Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die , offered songs for a post-"Old Town Road" country-rap world, cuts through two tracks with his unforgettable tone. "BLACKBIIRD" features the vocals of four Black women — Tanner Adell , Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts. This soulful cover of The Beatles ' classic about Black women's plights and resilience during the American Civil Rights movement puts its subjects in a spotlight that country radio rarely does, bringing home the reality that opportunities for artists like these have scarcely grown in the years since Martell broke ground.

9. It saddles up over the pop-country middle ground.

On Cowboy Carter , Beyoncé is a pop star actively in conversation with the idea of country music, and traversing the distance between those genres seems to have made her consider the existing relationship between them. In two moments on the album, she enlists singers who have been blurring that binary for quite some time: Miley Cyrus and Post Malone . Miley, of course, is the daughter of "Achy Breaky Heart" sensation Billy Ray Cyrus , and in her own pursuit of a pop identity, fiddled with Mike WiLL trap, Flaming Lips psychedelia, glam rock and country pop before settling on the centering sounds of last year's Endless Summer Vacation , which earned her a record of the year Grammy for "Flowers." For his part, Post broke out as a watercolor trap rockstar and has since shifted toward a sound more in line with his Texas roots. Both seem to resonate with the ambiguity Bey sees running through the music.

10. There's more beneath the rhinestone jewel case.

Beyond the many featured guests, other behind-the-scenes contributors help tell the story. The-Dream , Pharrell , No I.D., Raphael Saadiq , Ryan Tedder, Ryan Beatty and Swizz Beatz all helped produce the record. It also boasts an incredibly accomplished cast of supporting players: Pulitzer-winning folk revivalist Giddens , Grammy-winning soul man Jon Batiste , session luminary Nile Rodgers, gospel pedal steelist Robert Randolph , blues rocker Gary Clark Jr. , hip-hop banjoist Willie Jones and the incomparable Stevie Wonder . The incredible variety of names and skills is the secret sauce behind Cowboy Carter 's sprawling vision.

Beyoncé Honors Her 3 Kids While Bringing Her Western Style to 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards

Beyoncé, who received the 2024 iheartradio innovator award, stunned at the april 1 ceremony, where she thanked her children blue ivy, rumi and sir carter for inspiring her..

This ain't Texas, but Beyoncé  sure has a hold on us.

The singer turned heads at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards  on April 1, where she was honored with the 2024 iHeartRadio Innovator Award. For the event held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Beyoncé stayed true to her current country theme, wearing a black leather set and matching cowboy hat with gold embellishments.

But it was her speech that held an extra special meaning to her family, as she shouted out daughter Blue Ivy , 12; twins Sir and Rumi , 6; and husband Jay-Z .

"My husband, my rock, my best friend, I love you," Beyoncé said on stage. "My three beautiful children, who continue to be my inspiration and my biggest blessing."

She also thanked presenter  Stevie Wonder , who she revealed played the harmonica on her cover of "Jolene."

While accepting the award, Beyoncé explained some of the challenges she faces being an innovator in music, which she said starts with a dream.

"But then you have to execute that dream and that role can be very bumpy," she shared. "Being an innovator is saying what everyone believes is impossible. Being an innovator often means being criticized, which often will test your mental strength. Being an innovator is leaning on faith and trusting that God will catch you and guide you."

The ceremony is one for the books for Beyoncé. After all, according to the organization, the Houston native "has created music that has topped the charts across multiple formats, while also architecting groundbreaking tours, including last year's Renaissance World Tour ."

But saddle up, since it doesn't stop there.

"It is the first song this year to reach No. 1 in the US and globally on all major sales/streaming platforms, also making her the first Black female artist to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100 with a Country song."

It's a list of accomplishments that the 42-year-old is undoubtedly proud of—though she expressed what she remained truly grateful for at this point of her career.

Beyoncé once again brought the internet to a standstill with the release of her eighth studio album “ Cowboy Carter ” last night, but she explains that she initially had different plans for the 27-track project.

Beyoncé , who rarely makes public statements, revealed that each song on “Carter” is inspired by a different Western film. She often had the films playing during the recording process and named five as source material: “Five Fingers For Marseilles,” “Urban Cowboy,” “The Hateful Eight, “Space Cowboys,” “The Harder They Fall” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Some bits of percussion on the album were also inspired by the soundtrack for “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”

“My process is that I typically have to experiment,” says Beyoncé. “I enjoy being open to have the freedom to get all aspects of things I love out and so I worked on many songs. I recorded probably 100 songs. Once that is done, I am able to put the puzzle together and realize the consistencies and the common themes, and then create a solid body of work.”

For the album, an homage to country, blues and Black folk, Beyoncé sought to use “real instrumentation” including the accordion, washboard and pedal steel guitar. She makes it a point to note that she used her nails as percussion, much like Dolly Parton had done while recording “9 to 5.” All the sounds were so organic and human, everyday things like the wind, snaps and even the sound of birds and chickens, the sounds of nature,” she explained.

“Carter,” which took five years to record, features a laundry list of collaborators and inspirations. Though credits were not included in the album’s release rollout, she worked with many musicians across the project including The-Dream, Pharrell Williams, NO ID, Raphael Saadiq, Ryan Tedder, Ryan Beatty, Swizz Beatz, Khirye Tyler, Derek Dixie, Ink, Nova Wav, Mamii, Cam, Tyler Johnson, Dave Hamelin, and her husband Jay-Z.

Beyond the exhaustive list, “Carter” also features contributions from Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Linda Martell, Stevie Wonder, Chuck Berry, Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, Jon Batiste, Rhiannon Giddens, Nile Rodgers, Robert Randolph, Gary Clark, Jr., Willie Jones, Brittney Spencer, Shaboozey, Reyna Roberts, Tanner Adell and Tiera Kennedy.

With all the musicians helping to execute her vision, Beyoncé explains that she considers “Carter” her finest work. “I think people are going to be surprised because I don’t think this music is what everyone expects,” she says, “but it’s the best music I’ve ever made.”

About Twenty One Pilots:

Grammy-Award winning band, Twenty One Pilots, have shifted music and culture as an incomparable creative force and with an ever-evolving vision. The Columbus, OH duo—Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun— have tallied over 33 billion global streams and counting, sold north of three million tickets worldwide, notched dozens of multi-Platinum certifications, and even claimed a spot in the Guinness® Book of World Records. In historic fashion, their quadruple-Platinum breakout LP, Blurryface , took flight as “the first album to notch a RIAA Gold or Platinum certification for every one of its songs ,” while Vessel followed suit and achieved the same distinction. They elevated to rarified air as “one of only 18 artists to earn multiple RIAA Diamond certifications , ” going Diamond with “Stressed Out” and “Heathens.” 2018’s Platinum-certified Trench extended the ambitious concept laid out in Blurryface and delivered the multi-Platinum and Platinum singles: “Chlorine,” “My Blood” and the GRAMMY® Award-nominated “Jumpsuit.” They followed Trench with their Gold-certified LP Scaled And Icy , achieving “the biggest opening week for a rock album in 2021” by capturing #1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts and crashing the Top 3 of the Billboard 200. Beyond rapturous headline shows at arenas and festivals worldwide, Twenty One Pilots have notably architected an immersive world without comparison, originating a multi-album conceptual arc across Blurryface , Trench , and Scaled And Icy . Exactly nine years to the date of the Blurryface album release, they complete this story on their seventh full-length offering, Clancy [Fueled By Ramen], out May 17, 2024. Led by the single “Overcompensate,” the LP signals the dawn of another era for Twenty One Pilots and alternative rock music at large.
