Top 16 Things To Do in Naga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines

' src=

Our first stay in Bicol Region starts with Naga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines. We have some friends who live here so we asked for recommendations on possible things to dos, places to visits, restaurants to dine in, and hotels to stay in Naga City.

Although Naga City is well known as a Pilgrim City because of devotees visiting Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the Patroness of the Bicol Region, there are still a lot of interesting things to do here especially if you are a food, history or culture enthusiast.

Here are our Top 16 Things To Do in Naga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines!

1.) Pay Visit to Naga Metropolitan Cathedral

Apart from the fact that this is the nearest tourist spot from the bus terminal where you will alight from, the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral is the largest church in Bicolandia (region in the Philippines which is composed of 6 provinces- Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon and Masbate). The Cathedral plays a very important role during Peñafrancia Festival’s Traslacion. Every September, the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is transferred to the Cathedral from the Basilica Minore, the image’s home. In front of the Cathedral is Porta Mariae, a symbolic gate arch which imbues the journey of Marian devotion in Bicol. (Swipe below photo for more pictures)

2.) Peñafrancia Basilica Minore

Peñafrancia Basilica Minore is the home of Our Lady of Peñafrancia since 1985 when it was completely built. At the front entrance of the church is a huge and colorful glass mural depicting Our Lady of Peñafrancia. She is portrayed carrying a child with the skin color of the first settlers in the region- the cimarrones. (Swipe below photo for more pictures)

3.) Jesse Robredo’s Tomb

Few meters away from Basilica Minore is Eternal Garden where Jesse Robredo’s remains were laid. Jesse Robredo is one of the well-respected Bicolano icons in the 21st century. He became the mayor of Naga City for more than 2 decades. He was one of the very few politicians who was awarded The Ramon Magsaysay award for Government Service. Few kilometers from Jesse Robredo’s tomb is the Jesse Robredo Memorial. It celebrates the memories and contributions of Jesse Robredo as a family man and a public servant. In the lobby is a slipper-shaped desk symbolizing his ‘Tsinelas Leadership’ style. (Swipe below photo for more pictures)

Naga City is one of the best places for food. One of the highlights in our food trip would be trying Kinalas (below first photo), a popular noodle soup dish in Naga City garnished by scraped meat from pork or beef’s head, with a special sauce coming from the brains of a cow or pig. Exploring diversity and other culture and religion, Naga City also houses one of the biggest gurdwaras or Sikh Temple in Bicol Region- the Bicol Indian Sikh Temple.

Bicol Philippines: Ultimate Travel Guide 2024

Sharing is caring!

Bicol is the adventure capital of the Philippines, and is well known for its active volcanoes, tranquil whale sharks, secret beaches and spicy food. The destination is popular with Filipinos but fairly unknown to foreign tourists, so this travel guide acts as an introduction to the beautiful region of Bicol Philippines.

This article may contain affiliate links. If you purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to yourself. This helps towards the upkeep of this website for which I am grateful.

Where is Bicol located in the Philippines

The Bicol region is based in the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago.

Bicol is a region made up of six provinces , Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon and the island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate, and has its own language, Bikol , which is highly influenced by Spanish.

The largest city is  Legazpi , the capital of Albay and the Bicol Region is bounded by the Lamon Bay to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Sibuyan Sea and Ragay Gulf to the west.

The northernmost Bicol provinces of Camarines Norte and  Camarines Sur , are bordered to the west by the province of Quezon Philippines.

Map of Bicol Region Philippines

How to get to Bicol Philippines

Bicol can be reached by road or air. There are two main airports in Bicol, one in Naga, Naga Airport (WNP) and the other in Legazpi City, Legazpi Airport (LGP).

Both of these airports are serviced by major domestic carriers, including Philippines Airlines , Cebu Pacific and Cebgo airlines .

There are multiple flights a day between Bicol and other parts of the Philippines such as Cebu and Manila which is only a one hour flight away.

The distance by road from Bicol to Manila is 293 kilometres or 182 miles. The journey takes 8 to 10 hours by public transport from Manila, Cubao and Sampaloc.

Travel by private car takes about 6 to 7 hours from Manila to Legazpi City Philippines.

Best Time to Visit Bicol Region

As the provinces in Bicol Philippines are an underrated tourist destination there is no peak season (yet!) so it’s there’s no need to worry about avoiding the crowds.

Bicol Philippines has an all year round tropical climate , however the wet season is from July to January, when typhoons can be common.

April is the driest month of the year so a great time to visit, especially if you want to go island hopping in the Caramoan Islands .

If you would like to experience the festival culture that Bicol tourist spot is famous for, then check out the calendar here and plan your visit to fall during these times of the year.

Best Places to Visit in Bicol Philippines

Legazpi city in albay philippines.

The best tourist spot in Bicol is the majestic  Mount Mayon , which is found in Legazpi City , the capital of Albay.

Mt Mayon is 2,462 meters high and is the  world’s most perfectly formed volcano .

The active volcano can be seen from nearly anywhere in the city and most activities in Legazpi revolve around Mayon Volcano. Including hiking , ziplining and quad biking down the volcano !

Legazpi City is also home to Cagsawa Ruins , a 16th century church tower, and  Sumlang Lake , a water-sports haven with incredible views of Mount Mayon, both the ruins and the lake are popular Bicol tourist attractions.

Donsol in Bicol

Donsol is famous for being the whale shark capital of the world, and these huge fish can be seen all year round.

Boats leave daily from the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center, so if swimming with whale sharks is on your bucket list Donsol is the place to do it.

Other popular activities in Donsol include a firefly river tour , and scuba diving fun dives .

Naga City Camarines Sur Philippines

Whilst the rest of Bicol is famed for its nature and adventure, Naga City Philippines is the religious centre of Bicol.

Home to one of the most popular shrines in the Philippines, the Penafrancia Basilica Minore, is patterned after the Spanish shrine and is often visited by pilgrims and devotees.

Caramoan Island in Camarines Sur

The Caramoan Islands are the Philippines secret paradise.

This Asian hidden gem in Camarines Sur is often dubbed the next El Nido .

Spend your days, island hopping around the peninsula in search of white sand coves and limestone rocks and even look out for the filming location of the hit US TV show, Survivor .

Camarines Norte Philippines

The most popular spot in the Camarines Norte, is the  Catanduanes Islands , north of Luzon, which are a favourite amongst local surfers.

They are home to some of the most beautiful Bicol beaches, including Mamangal Beach , a completely untouched spot of paradise in the Catanduanes.

Another popular spot in the Camarines Norte is the city of Daet .

A cultural hotspot, home to numerous churches, monuments, and historical sites such as Parroquia de San Juan Bautista – one of the oldest churches in Bicol.

Where to Stay in Bicol Province

There are several good places to stay in Bicol, here are my recommendations for the different Bicol places to visit.

What is Bicol known for? Bicolano Food

The Bicol province is renowned for its spicy cuisine. Most Bicolano dishes contain, sili (hot chilli pepper) and gata (coconut milk) such as the most popular savoury dish, Bicol Express .

Locally, the Bicol Express is known as gulay na lada , and is made from ground pork, sili , baby shrimp, onion, garlic and other spices cooked in coconut milk.

Another popular Bicolano food dish is Pinangat , made from green  gabi  (taro) leaves wrapped around small pieces of fish, shrimp and/or pork.

Both dishes can be served with a vegetarian Bicol favourite, Laing, which is a chopped leafy green vegetable.

As for deserts, Legazpi is famous for its hot pink Chilli ice cream and Pili nut candies.

Festivals in Bicol City Philippines

Bicol is known for having some of the best festivals in the whole of the Philippines.

Some are religious, but others showcase the uniqueness of the Bicol Region.

  • In April, Masbate City holds the only rodeo in Asia, Rodeo Masbateño .
  • For the duration of May, Albay celebrates, Magayon Festival a month long festival which honours the beauty of Mount Mayon Volcano, which overlooks the city of Legazpi.
  • Also in May, is the 8 day long Sarung Banggi Festival , a colourful religious celebration dedicated to Potenciano V Gregorio’s love song ‘Sarung Banggi’.
  • During August, Legazpi City holds the Ibalong Festival, decidated to the folk story of Ibalong, where people dance in the streets wearing masks and costumes that represent the heroes and villains in the story.
  • In September, Naga City holds one of the busiest festivals in Bicol, attracting more than six million people a year. The Peñafrancia Festival is held to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
  • During Christmas, Naga Bicol also holds the Kamundagan Festival which includes lighting the Plaza Quezon Grandstand’s Christmas Village, and includes different fantasy themed Christmas shows held each night until Christmas Eve.

“The Queen City of Bicol”

Naga City Capitol

Before the coming of Spanish conquerors, Naga was already a flourishing village along the banks of the Naga River. It was an important village with comparatively sophisticated weaponry and surprisingly advanced culture.

In 1575, Captain Pedro de Chávez, the commander of the garrison left behind by Salcedo, founded on the site of the present business centre (across the river from the original Naga) a Spanish city which he named La Ciudad de Cáceres , in honor of Francisco de Sande, the governor-general and a native of the city of Cáceres in Spain. It was still by this name that it was identified in the papal bull of August 14, 1595 that erected the See of Cáceres, together with those of Cebú and Nueva Segovia, and made it the seat of the new bishopric under the Archdiocese of Manila.

In time, the Spanish city and the native village merged into one community and became popularly known as Nueva Cáceres, to distinguish it from its namesake in Spain. It had a city government as prescribed by Spanish law, with an ayuntamiento and cabildo of its own. At the beginning of the 17th century, there were only five other ciudades in the Philippines. Nueva Cáceres remained the capital of the Ambos Camarines provinces and later of the Camarines Sur province until the formal creation of the independent chartered city of Naga under the Philippine Republic.

Population/ Language/ Area

Naga City has a total land area of 8,448 has. and a total population of 174,931 as of 2010.

The weather in the city from March to May is hot and dry with temperature ranging from 22 to 28 °C (72 to 82 °F). From June to October is the typhoon season and it is generally rainy. From November to February, the climate is cooler with temperatures ranging from 22 to 28 °C (72 to 82 °F). The average year-round humidity is 77%.

Naga City Food

Business Opportunity

Strategically located in the heart of the Bicol peninsula, Naga City accounts for Bicol’s most number of business establishments, even as it is favored by the country’s largest companies to be the center of their regional operations in this part of South Luzon. Several international companies are in Naga City. The city is also the center of business and industries, even in trade for local municipalities surrounding the city. It also serves as the embarkation point of the Bicol Region and the receiving point of international supplies from Metro Manila. The city is also the major supplier of supplies from Metro Manila to other municipalities, and cities in the Bicol Region and Region 8 (Samar, and Leyte). Naga City is also the home of business when it comes to commercialization and industrialization of the Bicol Region.

Tourist Spots

  • Malabsay Falls – a 40 ft falls located on the slope of Mt. isarog in Panicuason. The Malabsay Ecology Park features swimming areas beneath the waterfalls, concrete windingstrings, foot bridges and pathways, cottages, and a plant nursery and camping ground.
  • University of Nueva Caceres Museum – located inside the University of Nueva Caceres, the UNC museum is one of the oldest museums outside Manila and recognized by the International Association of Museum. It houses historical artifacts of the ancient Bicol, its people and culture.
  • Our Lady Peñafrancia Museum – is located near the banks of Naga River, a few steps away from the Peñafrancia Shrine. This museum is a fond tribute to the Miraculous Lady. It is a piece to get in touch with Bicol’s historico-religious tradition. Its centerpiece is the Diorrama, a tri-dimentional presentation of faith and devotion from its roots in San Martin del Castañar, Spain. The museum was also declared as a National Historical Landmark on September 9, 1988. From a humble vacation house of the 18th century, it has emerged as a center and well-spring of ecclesiastical education in the Bicol Region.
  • Museu del Seminario Concillar de Nueva Caceres – located in the central pavillion of the age-old Holy Rosary Minor Seminary. On display are materials in four exhibit areas: Gallery of Bicolano Ecclesistics, that showcases memorabilia of the prominent Bicolano bishops, old scholastic records, directory of the Bicol clergy, books owned by Bishop Jorge Barlin and the archival materials which all give evidence of the ecclesiastical education of the Bicoloanos; the Ecclesistical Vessel and Artifacts room, which is a mixed collection of liturgical materials, monstrance, candelabras and other pieces which are reminders of the devotions of the past; the Marian Room with its collection of pictures of the canonical coronation in 1924 of the Virgin of Peñafrancia, there are also water color paintings of the different Marian images venerated in the different parishes of the Archdiocese of Caceres; and the Archeological room with its collection of the pre-Christian artifacts which consist of Neolithic stone technology unearthed mostly in the Bicol region.

Naga City Montage

The City of Naga is an independent component city in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. The city was established in 1575 on order of Spanish Governor-General Francisco de Sande.  The city, then named Ciudad de Nueva Caceres (New Caceres City), earned its status as the third Spanish royal city in the Philippine islands, after Cebu and Manila.

Naga is nicknamed as the "Heart of Bicol" for its geographical location near the center of the Bicol Peninsula. It is the second largest city in the Bicol Region (Region V) in terms of population and the religious, financial, educational, trade, and commercial center of the Bicol Region. Residents of the city are called Nagueños.

Naga City is at the core of Metro Naga, an official designation given the city and 14 municipalities in the area administered by the Metro Naga Development Council. MNDC covers the entire 2nd district of the province of Camarines Sur , and part of its 1st, 3rd and 4th districts.

Naga City is the Bicol Region's top tourist destinations not only because of Peñafrancia Festival, it is also a convenient disembarkation point and base for other tourist destinations in the southern Bicol Region like the Caramoan, Camarines Sur, the upscale resort of Misibis, butanding (whale shark) watching during their migration in Donsol, the white sand beaches of Sorsogon and surfing beaches of Catanduanes provinces.

Physical Features

The city of Naga is located within the province of Camarines Sur in the southeastern tip of Luzon at the near the center of the Bicol Region, surrounded on all sides by rich agricultural, forest and fishing areas. It covers a land area of 8,448 hectares (20,880 acres) and is located around the serpentine and historic Naga River, at the confluence of the Naga and Bikol Rivers. Thus, it has always been an ideal place for trade and as a center for schools, church and government offices. Included in its territory is Mount Isarog , a declared protected area in Region V known as Mount Isarog Natural Park.

Naga City is located 377 kilometers (234 mi) Southeast of Manila, the nation's capital, and about 380 kilometers (240 mi) northeast of Cebu City, the second largest city in the country.

Naga City is easily accessible by air and land. The city is served by the Naga (WNP) Airport which is located in the barangay of San Jose in the nearby town of Pili. Flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Naga takes approximately 35–40 minutes with services provided by Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines three and two times a day, respectively. By land, Naga is a 7- to 8-hour ride from Manila via Quirino & Andaya Highways or 10 hours via the Maharlika Highway. It is approximately 22 hours from Cebu City with ferry transfers in Sorsogon, the southernmost province of the Bicol peninsula. Buses ply to Sorsogon and Tacloban. Daily rail services to and from Manila used to be provided by Philippine National Railways.

Getting Around

Within the city, the dominant mode of transportation is the tricycles and jeepney, the latter a 16- to 22-seater stretched version of the American jeep.  The jeepney, dubbed as “The King of the Road of the Philippines”, is abundant all over the city. It is available for long distance travel and around the city on their designated routes.

Other means of transportations can also be found at very affordable prices. The ‘padyak’ or ‘pedicab’ is a bicycle with a sidecar. It is good for short-distance travels when you are not in a hurry.  It is light and moves around the quaint village streets of the city. Naga still has a number of horse-drawn carriages called ‘calesa’ along Abella Street.

The ‘tricyle’ is a motorcycle with a sidecar for short and long distance travel. They are color-coded according to their routes but, can go around other places outside their regular fare for special trips.

Taxis are available. They are generally stationed in key commercial and tourist hot spots.  They are all airconditioned with friendly drivers.  T hey can be contacted through their agents or the driver’s personal mobile numbers.
