Live reviews

After a decade long absence The Dismemberment Plan have finally dusted off their differences and returned with an awesome comeback. Bigger, better and more passionate than ever. Making indie rock cool before it became uncool to like indie rock because it then became TOO cool, The Dismemberment Plan’s music is still as relevant today as it was in 2003. A far cry from other early 00s bands that dominated the charts with their pop cheese back in the day, The D plan (as their friends call them) are chilled, post- punk, pre- indie musical goodness. Songs such as ‘The ice of Boston’, ‘The city’ and ‘What do you want me to say’ are just a small selection of their brilliant line up. There was honestly not a single song that they failed to rock and that didn’t draw the entire crowd’s attention. The lead singer’s vocals were raw and real: oddly nasal yet with a real rocky edge that suited their music perfectly. The other band members were all brilliant on their various instruments, showcasing their real talent. A welcome relief from much of the manufactured bands we are presented with today. Their banter on stage was as brilliant as their music, making the entire show a real treat to watch.

The Dismemberment Plan is a Washington D.C. based indie rock band formed over twenty years ago on the first of January in 1983. Their music spans many genres including Indie rock, experimental rock, post punk revival, math rock, and post hardcore. Though they are based in the District of Columbia, they mostly perform in Spain and the west coast of the United States of America. Their concerts are beautifully arranged with nice lights that complement the casual clothing they generally wear. Some of their great songs include "Life of Possibilities, Ellen & Ben, If I Don't Write” that they play with deep feelings and emotions.Their concerts are generally well attended and allow for people to have a great time. There are no raving or mosh pits when The Dismemberment Plan but I still was able to feel like I could transcend reality and get to a euphoric high without drugs! The feelings are great and I love how they actually take requests sometime from the audience, so it is not a purely pre-planned performance. This really makes them seem like they want to be great people as well as great artists. It gives their fans a stake in the outcome of the concerts, which are usually amazing.

The Dismemberment Plan

The Dismemberment Plan

Meet The Dismemberment Plan – an awesome band that rocked our world with their unique sound! This group from Washington, DC started making music together back in the late '90s. Their story is all about friendship, creativity, and finding your own groove.

Travis Morrison (vocals & guitar), Eric Axelson (bass), Jason Caddell (guitar), and Joe Easley (drums) were just regular folks who loved playing tunes when they formed this cool quartet. They didn't know it at first, but soon enough, people would be dancing to their catchy songs everywhere.

Influenced by indie-rock bands like Fugazi and Pavement, as well as genres ranging from punk to funk, The Dismemberment Plan created something special. With Travis' quirky lyrics and passionate vocals, paired up with energetic rhythms and melodies crafted by his talented friends, these guys made us move and think simultaneously.

Some of their most popular tracks include "You Are Invited," "What Do You Want Me To Say?", and "OK Jokes Over." These hits helped them gain fans across America during tours alongside other great acts such as Death Cab For Cutie or Braid. In fact, one album called  Emergency & I  became quite famous among college radio stations around the country.

After releasing several albums throughout the early 2000s, life took its course; members pursued different paths while still cherishing memories of jamming out on stage. But guess what? After almost ten years apart, The Dismemberment Plan reunited in 2015 to play some shows again—and we couldn’t have been happier! It was clear those old friendships hadn't faded away.

So there you go — meet The Dismemberment Plan, four pals whose infectious energy brought joy through unforgettable sounds over two decades ago... And even though time passed since then, whenever someone puts on one of their records today, magic happens once more. That's why we love them so much!

Two of the most popular bands in the independent rock scene are teaming for a North American tour. Death Cab For Cutie and the Dismemberment Plan will hit the road for a five-week trek beginning Feb. 16 in Grinnell, Iowa. The pairing has been in the works since early this year, Dismemberment Plan frontman Travis Morrison tells Billboard.com. “Honestly, I think they’re one of the best bands around, and I think it’s going to be great,” he says. At this point, only the routing for the first 13 shows has been set, but following a March 1 show in Los Angeles, the tour is expected to hit the Southeast and East Coast of the U.S., and Canada. As previously reported, the two groups will also join up with the annual Noise Pop Festival on Feb. 26 at Bimbo’s in San Francisco. The Plan is touring in support of its fourth Desoto album, “Change.” The group just finished a series of dates with Ted Leo/Pharmacists, of which Morrison observes, “it was it scary going on after Ted Leo. Ted is on a seriously fast track. That band is on fire.” Prior to the Death Cab dates, the Plan has Dec. 28-29 shows lined up in its hometown of Washington, D.C., as well as a New Year’s Eve show with Lake Trout in Baltimore. A short Japanese tour is also set for late January. Bellingham, Wash.-based Death Cab For Cutie is touring behind its latest Barsuk set “The Photo Album,” which debuted at No. 29 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart in late October. The set has sold 17,000 copies in the U.S. to date, according to SoundScan. Here is the routing for the opening of the Dismemberment Plan/Death Cab For Cutie tour: Feb. 16: Grinnell, Iowa Feb. 17: city TBA Feb. 18: Lawrence, Kan. Feb. 19: Denver Feb. 20: Salt Lake City Feb. 21: Boise, Idaho Feb. 22: Seattle Feb. 23: Portland, Ore. Feb. 24: Bellingham, Wash. Feb. 25: venue TBA Feb. 26: San Francisco (Bimbo’s / Noise Pop Festival) Feb. 28: San Diego March 1: Los Angeles

The Dismemberment Plan

Agent:  Mahmood Shaikh ————

In 2003, if you told the members of The Dismemberment Plan that ten years later, they would not only be releasing a new album, but their best record to date, there’s no way they would have believed you. Since forming in Washington, D.C. in 1993, the band has released four highly acclaimed full-lengths, toured the world many times over, and become one of the most well respected—and indefinable—acts in indie rock. But the past decade has seen their members exploring other areas both inside and outside of music, and even embracing adulthood. However, along the way something funny happened: They reunited three years ago to play some shows to support the reissue of 1999’s Emergency & I and realized their most potent magic had yet to be bottled.

“We never psyched ourselves out and thought, ‘NOW we’re making a Plan record,” explains guitarist Jason Caddell. “It was more like stay calm and play on,” he continues with a laugh. These sessions between the band—which also includes guitarist/vocalist Travis Morrison, bassist Eric Axelson and drummer Joe Easley—resulted in a collection of songs that are inspired because they weren’t burdened by any expectations, allowing them to retain the fire of their nascent recordings while entering a fresh sonic aura. “We weren’t going to get anything good unless we could trick ourselves into staying in that place where it was creativity for its own sake,” Morrison elaborates. “It was a real blessing and opportunity to be in that space again without thinking we had a product to deliver.”

To be fair, The Dismemberment Plan never thought of their music as a commodity, despite the fact that they have been handpicked to tour with Pearl Jam and shared the stage with peers Death Cab For Cutie on the co-headlining Death And Dismemberment Tour, among other career milestones. “Our goals have always been more abstract than sales and statistics,” Caddell explains. That statement is confirmed by the fact that in the years since their hiatus the members have gone on to thrive in their respective creative and intellectual fields while still keeping music an active presence in their lives.

Case in point, Axelson has been teaching in public schools and playing in various bands, including Maritime; Morrison worked for The Huffington Post and The Washington Post, and now is the president of his own start-up in addition to singing in church choirs; Caddell has been a freelance audio engineer for corporate and political events ranging from presidential elections to the G8 Summit at Camp David, all the while playing on and producing records for his friends and bandmates; and Easley received a degree in Aerospace Engineering, and now works at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on a robotic satellite servicing program in addition to playing with Axelson in Statehood.

Uncanney Valley was recorded by longtime collaborator J. Robbins (Jawbreaker, The Promise Ring) at his Baltimore Studio, Magpie Cage, and mixed by Paul Q. Kolderie (Pixies, Radiohead), and the result is an album that maintains The Dismemberment Plan’s unique sound while simultaneously allowing them to open up and expand on the foundation of their celebrated back catalog. Produced by Jason Caddell and The Dismemberment Plan, this is the first time in the band’s history that they didn’t use an outside producer. “When I listen to this record it’s hard for me to believe we’re a bunch of 40 year olds now,” Morrison admits. “It sounds like the musical heat is stronger than ever.”

This love of music is as evident in the buoyant groove of the Jackson Browne- inspired “Daddy Was A Real Good Dancer” as it is on the sweetly syncopated, electronically augmented rocker “Mexico City Christmas.” “Generally we have deeply broad taste in a lot of different types of music, and it’s not a fashion statement. It’s a genuine heartfelt appreciation, and I think you can hear that in our music,” Caddell responds when asked about the colorful sonic palette illustrated on the album. Whether Morrison is flexing his R&B chops on the quirky, catchy “Waiting” or approaching the concept of a love song in a new and effective context on the quasi-ballad “Lookin,” Uncanney Valley has moments certain to captivate both new listeners and longtime fans of the band.

The Dismemberment Plan’s personal growth is mirrored in Morrison’s lyrics, which center on his move to Brooklyn. “I wrote the kind of lyric stories I wanted to hear that I just wasn’t getting from other artists,” he explains. And even when he’s exploring isolation on the synth-driven “Invisible,” the songs retain a level of honesty that’s impossible to fake.

This spirit of collaboration paired with the members’ diverse taste and life experiences are what make Uncanney Valley such an enthralling listen—and although the group remains unsure what the future holds for them, the most important thing right now is that they exist here in the moment. “We’re very much taking things one step at a time, but I will say that at this juncture the excitement level is high. So, whatever comes next comes next,” Caddell summarizes.

Ultimately, whether the members are controlling robots on a space station or performing live with an enthusiasm that transcends age, The Dismemberment Plan are a special band, and Uncanney Valley solidifies that as times change and tides shift, this will always hold true.

The Dismemberment Plan is an indie rock/post-hardcore band formed in Washington, D.C., United States on January 1, 1993. Also known as “The D-Plan” or “The Plan,” the band’s name comes from a stray phrase uttered by the insurance salesman in the popular comedy Groundhog Day. The band members include Eric Axelson (bass), Jason Caddell (guitar), Joe Easley (drums) and Travis Morrison (vocals and guitar). Axelson, Caddell, Morrison and original drummer Steve Cummings formed the band after attending Lake Braddock Secondary School together in Burke, Virginia. Cummings left the band after the recording of the Plan’s debut album ! and was replaced by Easley starting on their second LP, The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified.

Aside from a brief interlude in 1998 and 1999 when they were signed by major label Interscope Records, the band recorded for local label DeSoto Records. Their third record and breakthrough album, Emergency & I, was actually created during their time at Interscope; however, they were dropped from the label shortly after its completion, and thus took it back with them to DeSoto, where it wound up being released. The Ice of Boston EP is the only item of theirs Interscope actually released during their tenure there.

Following the massive underground success of Emergency & I, the band received an even higher profile after being invited to open for the European leg of Pearl Jam’s 2000 tour. The band recorded and released a follow-up to Emergency & I, Change, in 2001 using the severance money they received from Interscope, and a subsequent co-headlining tour in 2002 with Death Cab for Cutie (cheekily called the “Death and Dismemberment Tour”) also worked well to raise both bands’ profiles and cross-pollinate their fanbases, as well as forge creative ties between several members.

Later that summer and fall, the Dismemberment Plan started to debut songs for their follow-up to Change. In 2002, the band put all the music tracks from their last two albums on their website, encouraging fans to remix the songs. The result was 2003’s A People’s History of the Dismemberment Plan. On January 19, 2003, however, the band announced on their website that they had decided to break up after a few tours that year. A final show was planned for July 28, 2003 in Washington D.C.’s famous outdoor show space, Fort Reno Park. However, come show-time, a heavy rain had driven off all but the most devoted fans, leading the band to add one more final show.

On September 1, 2003, the band closed out the first part of their career with a sold-out show at the renowned 9:30 Club. Following the split, Travis Morrison took the post-Change songs with him for further work, and released many of them on his first album, Travistan, in 2004. Jason Caddell worked with Morrison on Morrison’s second album, All Y’all, which was released under the name Travis Morrison Hellfighters. Eric Axelson started a band called Maritime with former members of The Promise Ring; they released an album, Glass Floor, in 2004. Axelson subsequently left Maritime and joined the band Statehood in mid-2006 with Joe Easley until the tragic death of Clark Sabine in June 2009. The Dismemberment Plan itself even reunited for two shows to benefit Cal Robbins at the Black Cat in Washington, D.C. on April 29 and April 30, 2007. A full reunion still seemed unlikely, though, and on July 2, 2009, Travis Morrison announced his retirement from music, stating that there would be no more shows or bands.

In late 2010, however, the Dismemberment Plan announced that they would reunite for a full-scale tour in 2011 coinciding with Barsuk’s vinyl reissue of Emergency & I. At the time, the band denied that they were planning a new record, but implied that one could be possible. By the time the tour was finished, the band played on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, as well as three performances in Washington, D.C., the Pitchfork Music Festival, Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic, and ten other dates.

The band reconvened once again in 2012 and played several small-venue shows in Baltimore, Maryland and Fredericksburg, Virginia, where they debuted eight new songs; a month later, Travis Morrison confirmed that they were working on a new record. On June 26, 2013, the band officially announced their fifth studio album (and first new record in 12 years), entitled Uncanney Valley. It was released via Partisan Records on October 15, 2013. The Dismemberment Plan Cover Circus Lupus for First New Recording in a Decade: Stream

Thanks to a new covers compilation from the DC label For Love of Records, The Dismemberment Plan have shared their first new recording in over a decade: a cover of Circus Lupus’ 1992 song, “Unrequited.”

Matching the arrangement of the original recording, The Dismemberment Plan’s take on “Unrequited” has the advantage of modern mixing on its side, and hits with a harder oomph on the low-end. On the choruses, the driving crash cymbal and arpeggiated bassline lift the energy, while the guitar solo leading into the outro conveys the raw, beefy power of the track, overall aptly honoring Circus Lupus’ original.

As the band explained on Instagram , the cover was recorded in August 2023 in Richmond, Virginia. Its arrival marks the first time they have played together in nine years. Listen to it below.

Titled Yesterday & Today: DC Does Dischord , the For Love of Records compilation arrived on January 31st, 2024, and features 27 DC artists paying homage to the influential label. Joining The Dismemberment Plan on the tracklist are Ted Leo covering Shudder to Think, The Pietasters covering Minor Threat, J. Robbins covering his former band Government Issue, and over 20 others.

A portion of the proceeds from Yesterday & Today: DC Does Dischord will go towards We Are Family DC, an organization which supports disadvantaged elderly in DC. Stream the album and order physical copies via Bandcamp .

The Dismemberment Plan’s latest release prior to this was their 2013 album, Uncanney Valley . Their sophomore album, The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified , was named by Consequence as the 35th best album of 1997 .

THE DISMEMBERMENT PLAN

When we started playing together, our gear was pretty ghetto. Travis had a Mako copy of a Stratocaster that had been thrown off a bridge at one time in its history; his amp, an old MusicMan head, was paired with a 4x10 cabinet that had perennially frozen casters and window screen for grille cloth. Eric had a rundown Hondo bass that he had played in college, along with a solid state Fender BXR bass amp (the BXR eventually became our longstanding keyboard amp). I had a puke green Stratocaster and a godawful-sounding solid-state Fender amp. Steve, our drummer at the time, had an old Ludwig kit that was barely hanging on. Our old Casiotone organ was missing several buttons, and the ones that were still in place worked only occasionally. We borrowed a trombone from Eric's sister for One Too Many Blows to the Head.

The songs Fantastic and OK, Joke's Over on our first record feature Travis playing a guitar with the bottom four strings tuned to C (E and A to a low C, D and G an octave up). The Mako was reserved for C guitar service when Travis bought a Gibson L6, which ended up being his primary guitar for several years. He modified the electronics in the Mako partly in an effort to prolong its life, but it did finally kick the bucket, and was replaced by a Vantage copy of a Gibson ES series guitar set up for C guitar use. Not long after the Vantage came along, we played Fantastic less and less at shows, and Travis began detuning his regular guitar to play OK, which eliminated the need for an extra guitar. I eventually upgraded to a MusicMan Silhouette and a Marshall JCM 800 with a 4x12 cabinet. Eric moved up to a Fender Jazz bass and a Dave Eden head (that seemed to be in the shop as much as not). After he bought the L6 Travis traded the MusicMan head and his cabinet for a Peavey Classic 50.

The trombone was ripped off by a crackhead, which struck Blows from our live sets until our last tours, when we revived it a few times with trombones that kids brought to some of the shows. When Joe joined the band after Steve left, he brought a a set of Yamaha Maple Customs with him that, aside from some hardware replacements and upgrades, remained his primary kit until the band ended. The smartest gear purchase the band ever made was our sampler, an Emu esi-4000. The first thing we did was sample the Casio sounds that we were already using live--and then things mushroomed from there. We sampled other keyboards (including the first two controllers we used for the sampler, a Roland JX-1 synth and a Yamaha Portasound synth), sounds from sound effects generators,

movies, records, guitars, our own voices, basically anything that was handy. I remember being out in the garage not long after we bought the esi, dropping different wrenches onto the concrete floor and sampling the sounds they made. In the last year of the band, we experimented with a laptop sampler. It was bleeding-edge technology, but for the most part we made it work.

It was all built around a Compaq 2800T laptop. The MIDI information went through a Steinberg USB MIDI interface and then into Cubase, which was running a Steinberg soft sampler called Halion. The audio then went out through an Edirol 16-bit USB sound port. A key element was a third-party ASIO driver for the Edirol, written by a company called USB-Audio, which did a heroic job in reducing latency between playing and hearing.

Live soft-sampler playing from a laptop iwas not quite a no-brainer. Most shows were fine, but you don't want to have to think about it at all. We switched back to the trusty ESI-4000 for the last tour, since we'd stopped playing new songs that were developed with the laptop; It was, we thought, mature technology that wouldn't stress us out. (Then the ZIP drive started failing in Japan. Just goes to show.)

After the sampler purchase we continued to make improvements to our individual rigs. I started playing Schecter guitars and stuck with them through the end of the band (and, after putting up with the many flaws of an annoyingly unreliable Groove Tubes amp, bought a small Marshall tube combo that I stayed with til the end). Eric eventually gave up on the Eden and the Jazz bass and replaced them with an Ampeg SVT-II Pro and an older Precision bass. Travis started using Peavey Classic 30s instead of the 50, and switched to my old MusicMan guitar for a while until it was replaced with an SG. During the majority of the shows we played during 2003, he used a new Gibson Melody Maker and a Fender Blues Jr. When the JX-1 finally needed to be put down, we attempted to replace it with a Fatar that didn't work correctly, and eventually bought a Midiman Radium that we used during the last few tours. Travis' controllers went through various iterations as well, but the majority of the time he used Yamaha PSS series keyboards. We also used a laptop running Halion through Cubase as our sampler for while, but reverted to the esi-4000 for our final tours.

Pedal-wise, the only real signature sound we used was Travis' Boss Pitch Shifter/Harmonizer for the keyboard delay and modulation for Girl O'Clock. I used various pedals over the years, finally settling on Ibanez TS-series pedals, a Z. Vex Fuzz Factory, a Line 6 Delay Modeler, a wah, and an EQ. All three of us used Boss tuning pedals for the last half of the band's existence.

We did quite a bit of home recording. We did the classic exponential ascent from two tracks (crappy boomboxes) to four tracks (a Tascam 424) to eight tracks (Tascam again) to computer. There were two computer environments: a 400Mhz tower running Cakewalk 8.0 and then a 2.4Mhz Dell running Cubase VST. We had an eight-in, eight-out Delta 1010 breakout box that ran with both. Both computers were running Windows.

Most of our equipment choices were driven by a combination of convenience, other musicians' advice, the desire to streamline our setup to the most reasonable extent possible, and, probably above all, our tendency to want to experiment with different sounds and textures--regardless of how asinine the initial results were, regardless of who told us not to try (no matter how sensible their reasoning may have seemed at the time), and occasionally despite each other's reservations or impatience. In retrospect those episodes of experimentation resulted in some of our best work.
