Wineries and dogs!

OK Ontario wine lovers and dog lovers, this article is for you! Plan your next day trip to these dog friendly wineries Niagara on the Lake has to offer!

Wineries make the ideal activity to do with your dog. The laid-back, rural setting of vineyards offering lots of wide-open green space is exactly what my dog enjoys. He’s quite content to lie down on the grass while I sip away. Not to mention all the attention he gets – it’s a win-win.

Don’t have a dog? Not to worry, these are still my top picks for wineries Niagara on the Lake offers!

Table of Contents

About niagara on the lake wine.

3 glasses of wine on table at dog friendly wineries niagara on the lake

The Niagara wine region is world-renowned for its wine, especially its ice wine.

It’s considered a prime grape-growing area due to its fertile soil and perfect microclimate conditions. This is the reason why it’s Ontario’s largest producer of wine.

The Niagara region stretches from Niagara Falls to Hamilton and is divided into two appellations – the Niagara Escarpment (also known as The Bench) close to Beamsville and the Village of Jordan and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

More than 40+ grape varieties are grown in this area.

It offers the best white grape varieties of Riesling, Vidal, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris. As well as the best red grape varieties of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Baco Noir, Pinot Noir, and Gamay.

If you love cool crisp whites or big, bold, and balanced reds you are bound to find both at most top wineries in Niagara on the Lake.

8 Best Dog Friendly Wineries Niagara on the Lake

two chairs with wine at dog friendly wineries niagara on the lake

I’m often asked, “Is Niagara on the Lake dog friendly?” when people see me posting on Instagram stories of my dog and I enjoying ourselves. And, yes, there are several wineries that allow dogs now.

It’s amazing how pet friendly Niagara on the Lake has become over the years. They weren’t always so welcoming of dogs.

1. Ironwood Cider House

picnic table, dog at pet friendly wineries niagara

The Sunnybrook Farm Estate Winery , now known as Ironwood Cider House , is recognized as Canada’s original fruit winery.

That’s right, 100% of the locally grown berries, stone, and tree fruit are the primary ingredients in their wines and ciders.

And, I’m a HUGE fan of their delicious wines.

You definitely can taste peach, nectarine, cherry, pear, or apple in their products. It’s what separates them from the rest of the wineries in this area.

Go to Ironwood Cider House for:

  • unique and delicious fruit wines: my recommended pick is the 2017 Poire Sec
  • crisp and dry fruit-inspired ciders: my recommended pick is Yuja cider
  • cool, modern art-gallery-esque interior with wine-tasting space
  • delicious tapas menu with many vegetarian options: my recommended choices are Seasoned jam grilled brie cheese, Sesame Teriyaki Brussel Spouts, and Butter Chickpea
  • pet-friendly interior and exterior spaces

📍1425 Lakeshore Rd, NOTL

2. Lakeview Wine Co.

2 glasses of white wine winery in pet friendly wineries niagara on the lake

Lakeview Wine Co. is a modern-designed building and anything minimalist in design gets my immediate attention.

Lakeview Wine Co. is just the retail branch of Diamond Estates Wines, Ontario’s 3rd largest producer of wines.

Enjoying a flight at this winery means you could be sampling any of their nine wines, such as 20 Bees ,  EastDell ,  FRESH , and Lakeview Cellars .

Go to Lakeview Wine Co. for:

  • wide variety of wines from whites, reds, rosés, and ice wines: my recommended picks are Eastdell Pinot Grigio, Riesling, and Summer Rosé
  • learn about the winemaking process with on-site tours by friendly, knowledgeable wine specialists
  • large wine shop featuring all 9 brands of wine
  • dog-friendly interior and exterior spaces with grassy lawns and picnic table seating

📍1067 Niagara Stone Road, NOTL

3. Marynissen Estates

brown dog in front of vineyards in dog friendly winery niagara on the lake

Keeping to its original roots of being a small-lot winery, the Marynissen family legacy continues. Marynissen Estates is rustic, laid-back, and feels like someone’s home.

It has a great community feel – almost like you’ve arrived at a backyard party.

Don’t be surprised to find music playing, a pop-up market set up, and people roaming around the exterior spaces with their dogs, making this one of the most pet-friendly wineries Niagara on the Lake has.

Go to Marynissen Estates for:

  • small-lot wines: my recommended pick is the 2019 Pinot Grigio or Rosé
  • rustic, laid-back vibes
  • experiences- reserve their private tent for tastings perfect for large groups or their Wine & Spines book club
  • host of 3 of the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s passport events Days of Wine, Chocolate and Cheese (March), Sip & Sizzle (May) and Taste the Season (November)
  • dog-friendly interior and exterior spaces

📍 1208 Concession 1 Rd, NOTL

4. Palatine Hills Winery

4 people with dog with wine barrels in niagara on the lake dog friendly wineries

It feels different here. Visit Palantine Hills and you’ll receive the warmest welcome as if you’re a long-lost friend.

The cool interior space resembles a small airplane hanger or garage with a patio space complete with air misters, and cornhole toss.

This second-generation family-run winery is a fun place to go for you and your dog.

Dog treats, belly rubs, and dog selfies for their photo wall are all part of the pooch experience. Look for the photo of my dog Henry on their wall!

And, maybe you might even get to meet Rae the German Shepherd or Penny the Golden Doodle at this ultimate dog friendly winery Niagara on the Lake.

Go to Palatine Hills for:

  • variety of whites and reds: my recommended pick is the Wild & Free, Pinot Grigio
  • a fun, friendly atmosphere where the tunes and laughs are guaranteed
  • go on a Friday night for their cornhole tournament or listen to live music on Sundays
  • where your dog will have just as much fun as you, or maybe even more

📍 911 Lakeshore Rd, NOTL

5. Ravine Vineyard Estates

vineyard in rural setting niagara on the lake dog friendly wineries

Ravine Vineyard Estates feels like a warm, family-friendly farm. Maybe that’s because of its early roots dating back to the 1800s.

Once a fruit farm, now a winery, the Ravine Vineyard Estate operates like a community or a village, with an on-site Lowery Bros. Grocery shop, event space, and pet friendly restaurant and patio.

Go to Ravine Vineyard Estates for:

  • Lowery Bros. Grocery shop for their own jams, honey, and pickles, as well as wine and ciders
  • dine at The Restaurant offers a farm-to-table menu with live entertainment: my recommended pick is the Oyster Mushroom with lentils
  • the pretty vineyard views in a quiet country setting
  • my pick for one of the best Niagara-on-the-Lake restaurants with patios and dog friendly restaurants Niagara-on-the-Lake offers

📍1366 York Road, St. Davids (NOTL)

6. Southbrook Organic Vineyards

pink roses at vine

Southbrook Organic Vineyards is a sleek eye-catching modern winery and it’s just as stunning inside as it is out.

As a LEED-designed building, this is an architectural gem, and definitely one of my favourites.

Beyond the beautiful design of the winery, what makes Southbrook stand out from the rest is that it only produces organic wines. Not only were they the first to market, but they are among the only and best organic wineries Niagara on the Lake has.

I got to speak to the owner, Bill who speaks passionately about the importance of sustainability – using less water, energy, and no chemicals.

Go to Southbrook Organic Vineyards for:

  • delicious organic wines: my recommended picks are Laundry Riesling, Cabernet Franc Rosé, and Triomphe Pinot Noir
  • love architecture and design
  • refined tasting room experiences – both interior and exterior spaces
  • pretty vineyards with roses used as natural way to keep the insects away from the grapes
  • dog-friendly spaces

📍 581 Niagara Stone Road, NOTL

7. Stratus Vineyards

winery at sunrise that's dog friendly niagara on the lake

A stunning modern building sits in the middle of its vineyards.

Stratus is known as one of the few pump-free wineries in the world. Going against the grain, they use gravity to transport wine to barrels which draws less energy.

Environmental impact is important to this winery which aspires to be one of the world’s most sustainable wineries.

Go to Stratus Vineyards for:

  • any of their signature wines – white, red, and rosé are my recommended picks
  • chic modern boutique-style tasting rooms
  • love architecture (LEED-certified building) and modern interior design
  • looking for a refined experience with food & drink pairing
  • Niagara wineries dog friendly terrace only

📍 2059 Niagara Stone Rd, NOTL

8. The Hare Wine Co

Winemaking has been in the Hare family for generations and continues in Bulgaria.

The Hare Wine Co. has old-world European charm. With its red rustic brick and barn board flooring.

The exterior terrace continues the rustic interlock stone and cast iron tables and chairs.

Go to The Hare Wine Co. for:

  • great tasting wines, especially the whites: my recommended picks are the Hare Pinot Grigio, Riesling, and Sparkling Rosé
  • old-world European style
  • relaxed atmosphere
  • dog-friendly interior and exterior spaces

Wine Routes in Niagara on the Lake

dog in front of motorcycle at dog friendly winery niagara on the lake

Niagara on the Lake is a small area, and you can easily visit all of these wineries without too much driving.

Visiting 3 to 4 wineries in a day seems to be the right balance of not feeling rushed, yet making it a full afternoon.

I’ve created two recommended routes, based on winery proximity making the most of your time in this area.

Route #1: Visit 4 Wineries (QEW Exit Regional Rd 89)

  • QEW to Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery = 7 minutes
  • Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery to Southbrook Organic Vineyards = 10 minutes

This tour is actually very similar to the Full Day Group Wine Tour in Niagara-on-the-Lake which is at the top of my list. The only reason I’ve ranked this one lower down is because it’s not quite as well-reviewed. But it includes a very similar experience and if you choose to go with this one, I’m sure you’ll also have a fantastic time!

Niagara Winery Tour FAQs

How many wineries are in niagara.

There are more than 50 wineries in Canada’s Niagara wine region. Around half of them are located in and around Niagara-on-the-Lake, on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. And there are also more than 20 wineries on the US side of the falls in Niagara County.

What time of year is best for Niagara wine tours?

The best time for Niagara wine tours is typically during the spring, summer, and early fall. The weather is most pleasant during these times, with long sunny days and warm temperatures. So this is the ideal time to explore the vineyards and the surrounding countryside.

However, later in the fall, from October to November, is also great time to visit Niagara, as the landscape lights up with some of the region’s most vibrant fall colours.

What type of wine is Niagara known for?

Niagara is best known for its production of Ice wine, a sweet dessert wine made from grapes harvested while frozen on the vine. The region also produces excellent cool-climate wine varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc.

How does a wine tasting tour work?

During a Niagara wine tasting tour you will typically visit multiple wineries, where you’ll be guided through tastings of various wines by local wine consultants. They’ll teach you about the winemaking process, grape varietals, and flavour profiles while you sample a selection of wines.

Sometimes food, such as charcuterie or cheese pairings, will be included. And, certain tours may give you the option to stop at a local restaurant for lunch.

On Niagara wine tours, a local guide and transportation between wineries is also usually provided. And there will be an opportunity to purchase bottles of wine to take home.

How much time do you spend at each winery?

On most wine tours which include multiple stops, you’ll have around 45 minutes at each winery. However, this can sometimes be longer, if the stop is for a more comprehensive tasting, tour of the facilities, or even for lunch. And private tours can be customized to allow for longer or shorter stops, depending on your preferences.

What is ice wine?

Ice wine is a type of sweet dessert wine made from grapes that have been left to freeze naturally on the vine. This freezing process concentrates the sugars and flavours in the grapes, resulting in a rich, intensely sweet wine with a balanced acidity. It’s typically served chilled and is paired well with desserts.

Do you tip on wine tours?

Tipping on a wine tour is up to you, but is not usually expected. As most Niagara wine tours are booked and paid for in advance , you won’t actually have to pay anything on the day, unless you purchase bottles of wine or food during the tour.

For bottle purchases a tip is not expected. But for restaurant food eaten onsite, such as lunch, it’s customary to add a tip between 15% to 20% in Canada.

It can also be a nice gesture to provide a tip to your tour guide and driver. However, this is very much at your own discretion.

What do you wear to a wine tour in Niagara?

Most wineries in Niagara don’t have a specific dress code. I would recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes, as you will likely do a lot of standing throughout the day. And, if you’re going to be doing a bike wine tour , make sure you wear something you can easily cycle in.

What is the difference between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Niagara Falls is the small city and bustling tourist destination which is home to Niagara’s famous waterfall. Whereas Niagara-on-the-Lake is a small lakeside heritage community, often deemed the prettiest town in Ontario, known for its historic architecture, wineries, and theatres.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is only around 25-kilometres from Niagara Falls, and can be reached along the scenic Niagara Parkway. If you’ll be spending some time in the Niagara region, it’s absolutely worth visiting both Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

How old do you have to be to go on a Niagara wine tour?

You must be of legal drinking age to participate in a Niagara wine tour, which is 19 years old in Ontario.

Dog-friendly Wineries in Niagara: A Muddy Paws Adventure

dog friendly wine tours niagara

Welcome to summer 2023, and the season of pet events and festivals. Many dog-friendly events started early, securing dates in May and June. For instance, we’ve already been to Spaniel Day at Hounds of Erie Winery in Norfolk County, Ontario and recently, dog-friendly Muddy Paws Wine Train event, June 24 and 25, 2023. ( Check out this events listing ).

Muddy Paws is a good introduction to dog-friendly wineries in Niagara.

What’s the Muddy Paws Wine Trail?

Muddy Paws Wine Trail is a weekend-long ticketed event when four wineries in Ontario’s Niagara Region welcome pups and their people for wine sampling, food pairings, and of course, dog treats at each stop. The idea is that one ticket encourages you to tour and taste at four different wineries – and walk the dog through vineyard trails and forested hiking paths.

This isn’t the first year for Muddy Paws dog-friendly winery festival – it began pre-pandemic as an event between two neighbouring wineries – Featherstone Estate Wineries and Vineland Estate Winery – connected by a hiking trail perfect for walking the dog through Niagara Escarpment forest. ( Check out our previous Muddy Paws adventures here ) .

wine class on table in from of white tent with dog items

However, this is the first year it’s grown to include two other wineries: Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery and Westcott Vineyards . Note that all four wineries have outdoor patios and expansive properties open to people and their pups at any time during the season.

What was included in the Muddy Paws ticket price?

Each winery was set up with live singers, a wine-tasting tent with food sample, and dog treats.

Every Muddy Paws ticket included the following :

  • two one ounce wine tasting
  • one food sampling
  • dog treats or ‘yappitizers’

The enthusiasm and effort at each winery varied, with Featherstone being my favourite thanks to the fire-burning pizza oven going a few extra dog-focused vendors present. Westcott ran a close second because of some impressive ‘pup cakes.’ Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery seemed to love dogs the most and has the best Baco Noir called Bark Barn Baco.

With the addition of the two more wineries, ticket prices rose to $60 plus tax per person  (dogs still free), and some proceeds go to supporting the Bello Project – an organization that works with the Home Hospice Association to help terminally ill people stay with their pets as long as possible and ultimately find homes for their pets.

Walk a leashed dog between dog-friendly wineries in Niagara

What makes this wine trail adventure particularly dog-friendly is the fact you can walk between wineries with your leashed dog.  There’s a wooded trail from Featherstone to Vineland Estates – bring good hiking shoes because you’ll be stepping over roots and rocks. It’s about a 30-minute walk one way, then back to the winery where you parked.

black and white dog walking through vineyard

The two other wineries, about a five-minute drive from Featherstone, are close enough to each other to walk between, and my dog loved it . Follow flat paths along the edge of the vineyards from Sue-Ann Staff Estate to the Westcott tasting room with a large outdoor (dog-friendly) restaurant. This path takes about 15 minutes – during the Muddy Paws event it was marked with ribbons. That’s likely not a regular feature, but maybe should be.

  • Featherstone Estates Winery
  • Vineland Estates Winery
  • Westcott Vineyards
  • Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery

Follow the ‘Muddy Paws Wine Trail’ on your own at any time during the Niagara Region summer and early fall wine season. Also, there are many pet events and activities coming up in Ontario this summer. ( See listings here ). A few we’re looking forward to are the following:

  • Muskoka Pet Fest on July 9, 2023, in Huntsville, Ontario
  • PAWS-itively Elgin Pupper Festival on July 22, 2023, in Aylmer, Ontario
  • Pawlooza on August 19, 2023, in London, Ontario.

4 Dog-friendly Wineries in the Niagara Region :

Featherstone Estate Winery , 3678 Victoria Avenue, Vineland, Ontario, Canada (Try the 2021 Rose)

Vineland Estate Winery , 3620 Moyer Road, Vineland, Ontario, Canada (Offers ‘Barkuterie Boards’ for dogs on the ‘dog pound’ patio. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on the main outdoor patio.)

Note: There is a wooded trail between Featherstone and Vineland – about 30 minutes each way.

Westcott Vineyards , 3180 Seventeenth Street, Jordan, Ontario, Canada (Try the 2021 Violette Sparkling).

Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery , 3210 Staff Avenue, Jordan, Ontario, Canada. (Try the 2020 Bark Barn Baco Noir).

Note: You can walk along the edge of the vineyards (and cross one country road) between Westcott and Sue-Ann Staff – about 15 minutes each way.
