The PGA Tour's West Coast swing begins at The American Express in La Quinta, California, on Thursday.

These past two weeks might serve as a microcosm of what is to come on the PGA Tour.

South Korea's Si Woo Kim , who won The American Express in 2021, returned to the winner's circle at the Sony Open in Hawaii last week. He rallied from a 3-shot deficit over the final three holes to pick up his fourth PGA Tour victory, doing so against a leaderboard that didn't include many familiar names.

None of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking stuck around for the second week in Hawaii, after most competed in the more lucrative Sentry Tournament of Champions to start 2023. The handful of star players who were there, including Jordan Spieth , Tom Kim , Gary Woodland and Billy Horschel , missed the cut.

Conversely, the field for The American Express, the tournament that Bob Hope made famous in the California desert, is absolutely loaded. Five of the top 10 players in the world and 10 of the top 20 are going to tee it up in the Coachella Valley. Scottie Scheffler is there. So is Jon Rahm , Patrick Cantlay , Xander Schauffele , Will Zalatoris and Cameron Young .

Changes to the $100 million Player Impact Program requirements have been a good thing for The American Express, which has perhaps its best field in at least two decades. The new PIP rules require players to compete in 20 tournaments, including 12 elevated events, The Players, the four majors (if they qualify) and three other tournaments of their choosing. Many chose to play in La Quinta.

"You want to beat the best, and I'm glad people are coming," Rahm said during a news conference on Wednesday. "It's good that more players are trying more events. I think it's due to some of the new events going on during the year. The fact that we have all those big events that we have to play, if we want to earn that PIP reward.

"That opens up to all those, let's say lower events, that you need to play. It opens people's eyes to maybe some events they haven't played in the past because your schedule changes a little bit. I know I'm one of those."

Here's what to watch in men's professional golf this week:

What's next on the PGA Tour

The American Express

When: Thursday-Sunday

Where: La Quinta Country Club, La Quinta, California

Defending champion: Hudson Swafford

Purse: $8 million

Three storylines to watch:

Where's Mickelson?: Six-time major champion Phil Mickelson was the official host of the American Express the past three years. But like many of Mickelson's longtime sponsors, The American Express severed ties with him after his controversial comments about the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian financiers of LIV Golf were published by author Alan Shipnuck in February 2022.

Another big change: The previous charitable arm of the tournament, the Mickelson Foundation, has been replaced by American Express' Impact Through Golf, which will provide funding to local organizations.

Swafford, a two-time winner of the event, won't be back to defend his title, either. He is among the PGA Tour players who were suspended by commissioner Jay Monahan for appearing in LIV Golf events without conflicting-event releases. Past champions and current LIV Golf players Patrick Reed and Pat Perez will be no-shows, as well.

Two World No. 1s?: Rahm and other players have criticized the Official World Golf Ranking's new formula for awarding more points to watered-down (but larger) fields than smaller (but more elite) fields, like the Tournament of Champions.

Now, according to calculations by a popular OWGR guru on Twitter, there could actually be co-No. 1s in the new world rankings on Monday -- if No. 5-ranked Cantlay wins the American Express and No. 2-ranked Scheffler finishes solo eighth. There have never been co-No. 1s in the OWGR.

🚨BREAKING As things stand now, if Patrick Cantlay wins @theamexgolf and Scottie Scheffler finishes solo 8th, those two could share the No.1 place in the world rankings and Rory will drop to #3... #OWGR (that will change if there are further changes in the field) — Nosferatu (@VC606) January 17, 2023

Under that scenario, according to the OWGR guru, current No. 1 player Rory McIlroy would drop to third.

Scheffler, who spent much of last season atop the rankings, was asked about sharing the top spot on Wednesday during a news conference.

"That would be pretty funny," Scheffler said. "I assume that's never happened before. Yeah, it would be a little bit weird to have two No. 1s. Maybe have a putt-off or something to see who would be the real No. 1."

Schauffele's return: Schauffele, who was forced to pull out of the Tournament of Champions after the eighth hole of the second round because of an ailing back, is scheduled to tee off on Thursday. But he acknowledged his back is still bothering him.

"Yeah, it's just a little sore," Schauffele said. "I did nothing, and I had a lot of work done on it, so it's a little sore. I've gotten in probably more swings than I wanted to in these last three days. So just more work to be done on it. I got to be a little bit more patient in my return."

Schauffele said he probably spent too much time on the practice range over the past few days.

"More swings than I wanted," he said. "I'm that golfer who is sort of like, 'Just one more,' and it's like 50. You know what I mean? I'm that guy. I think all of us out here who are tour pros are those people and definitely guilty."

PGA Tour Power Rankings

1. Jon Rahm Rahm's victory at the season-opening Tournament of Champions gave him at least one in seven straight seasons, which tied Justin Thomas for the longest active streak on tour.

2. Rory McIlroy You can watch the reigning world No. 1 golfer compete next week in the Dubai Desert Classic.

3. Scottie Scheffler He'll have a chance to defend four titles before mid-April at the WM Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and the Masters.

4. Patrick Cantlay The California native has three straight top-10s in the American Express and leads players with a minimum five rounds at the event in scoring average (67.17) and birdies per round (6.17).

5. Tony Finau Finau has three victories and six top-10s in his past eight starts. That's a heater. He has 74 birdies or better at The American Express the past three years, most by any player.

6. Will Zalatoris Zalatoris returned from a more than four-month hiatus because of a back injury and tied for 11th at Kapalua.

7. Justin Thomas The reigning PGA Championship winner tied for 25th in his first start of 2023 at Kapalua, where he had won twice before.

8. Max Homa How many times will Homa be asked about carding a 9-under 61 to set the Los Angeles Country Club North Course record as a Cal senior in 2013 between now and June's U.S. Open that will be played there?

9. Cameron Young The 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year has the length to go very low this week, maybe low enough to pick up his first PGA Tour victory. He tied for 13th at Kapalua.

10. Tom Kim A year ago, Kim made his fifth PGA Tour start at The American Express on a sponsor's exemption. He was ranked 154th in the world. This week, he is 14th. He tied for fifth at the Tournament of Champions and missed the cut at the Sony Open.

LIV Golf's TV deal looming?

"Coming up next, after another hour of 'Jack Hanna's Into the Wild,' live coverage of the second round of the LIV Golf Invitational Mayakoba in Mexico."

After months of speculation, it seems LIV Golf finally has a domestic TV partner. It's probably not the cable network you imagined would broadcast the Saudi-backed circuit's second season, but one that had been rumored to be in play for weeks. According to various reports, LIV Golf is on the cusp of signing a media rights deal with The CW Network, which is known more for re-airing episodes of "Bob's Burgers," "Family Guy" and "Divorce Court" than broadcasting live sporting events.

In fact, The CW currently has no other sports properties. It will reportedly share advertising revenue with LIV Golf, which will not receive TV rights fees in the deal. In March 2020, the PGA Tour reached a nine-year media rights agreement with CBS Sports, NBC Sports and ESPN that will pay the tour more than $6 billion over the life of the deal.

LIV Golf will continue to pay for production costs, as it did during its inaugural season, when tournaments were streamed on YouTube, DAZN and the circuit's official website.

"I think it is a very positive step in the right direction," an agent with LIV players told ESPN on Wednesday. "I think it was critically important to the future of LIV Golf that they get some type of broadcast partner. At this point, getting eyeballs was critical to the ongoing success. I think this will undoubtedly get us eyeballs."

The second LIV Golf season is scheduled to tee off at El Camaleon Golf Course in Mayakoba, Mexico, from Feb. 24 to 26. The league, which is fronted by two-time Open winner Greg Norman , has announced the sites of only seven of its planned 14 tournaments in 2023. Events also will be held in Arizona, Australia, Singapore, Oklahoma, Spain and West Virginia.

A full announcement of LIV Golf's 2023 schedule and the 48 players on its 12 teams is expected in the coming days.

The CW, which is majority owned by Nexstar Media Group, is distributed to 123.5 million homes across the United States. While LIV Golf has vowed to grow the sport and reach a younger audience, The CW's average viewer is 58 years old, according to Nexstar.

"The main thing is they're now on network TV," the agent said. "If the Lakers and Warriors are playing on TV, I don't think people care if it's on channel 8, 12, 24 or 36. They care that they can tune in and watch. They're now on a channel that's on everyone's channel lineup, whether it's a 14-year-old or an 85-year-old."

The Sports Business Journal first reported the potential deal between LIV Golf and The CW. LIV Golf had reportedly been in talks with Fox Sports about broadcasting its tournaments on FS1 or FS2, with LIV Golf paying for airtime.

DALLAS (October 24, 2023) – World No. 1s Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters headline the outstanding pro player field participating in the 2023 Biofreeze USA Pickleball National Championships powered by Invited and the PPA Tour. Pickleball’s largest-ever tournament runs from November 5-12 at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, an inner-ring suburb of Dallas.

Given their remarkable resumes, Johns and Waters are the most recognizable names in pickleball worldwide. Johns is the first-ever player to win 100 career titles on the PPA Tour. At age 24, he is the winningest player – male or female – in PPA history with 104 career gold medals. Waters is second overall in PPA titles with 83. The 16-year-old phenom has 19 career Triple Crowns on the PPA Tour, tied for most all-time alongside Johns. Dallas pros participating in Nationals include pickleball veterans Riley and Lindsey Newman, and former professional soccer player, Ivan Jakovljević, who hails from Croatia but calls Dallas home.

Joining Johns and Waters in the pro field is a long list of pickleball’s brightest stars. The overall grand purse, including the senior pro and split payouts, is more than $275,000.

“Brookhaven Country Club will soon be the center of the pickleball universe. Nationals is one of the crown jewel tournaments, and with pickleball’s best athletes going head-to-head and a record prize purse at stake, the competition promises to be fierce and electrifying,” said Connor Pardoe, Founder and CEO of the PPA Tour. “Led by Ben and Anna Leigh, the pro player field is exceptionally deep, so the brackets in every discipline will be hotly contested. From singles to doubles to mixed doubles, anything can happen. That’s the beauty of this event, winning and etching your name in the history books means everything.”

Former No. 1s David Duval, Vijay Singh, Tom Lehman join Galleri Classic field

Three former world No. 1 golfers along with a two-time U.S. Open champion have joined the list of players committed to play in the Galleri Classic at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage this month.

World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Vijay Singh, major champions David Duval and Tom Lehman along with two-time U.S. Open champion and World Golf Hall of Famer Retief Goosen have been added to the field of the event at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course on March 27-31.

The Galleri Classic, named after title sponsor GRAIL’s multi-cancer early detection test, will feature 78 PGA Tour Champions professionals playing 54 holes (three rounds) for a $2.2 million purse.

Singh, Goosen, Duval and Lehman join defending champion David Toms, 2023 PGA Tour Champions Player of the Year Steve Stricker, World Golf Hall of Famers Fred Couples and Ernie Els, two-time major champion John Daly, Steven Alker, Stephen Ames, Jerry Kelly and Alex Cejka were among The Galleri Classic’s early entrants. Stricker was announced earlier this year as an ambassador for Galleri.

“We welcome Vijay, David, Tom and Retief – all classic champions – back for a return engagement at Mission Hills,” said Michelle DeLancy, tournament director of The Galleri Classic. “The inclusion of Vijay, Tom and David give our event five of the 25 golfers to have ever held the World No. 1 ranking. The Galleri Classic is lining up a long list of legends for spectators to enjoy watching here in Rancho Mirage later this month.”

More: Steve Stricker commits to PGA Tour Champions' Galleri Classic; will serve as 2024 Grail ambassador

Singh has won five PGA Tour Champions titles to go with his 34 PGA Tour victories, including the 2000 Masters and the PGA Championship in 1998 and 2004. Singh finished in a tie for fifth place (10-under-par 206) in last year’s inaugural Galleri Classic.

Duval's local round iconic

Duval is a 13-time PGA Tour winner who won the 2001 British Open Championship. Duval unseated Tiger Woods as No. 1 in the world rankings in 1999, the same year he shot his most famous round with a final-round 59 on the Palmer Course at PGA West to win The American Express title.

Goosen, the 2001 and 2004 U.S. Open champ and 2002 and 2007 Masters runner-up, was a six-time Presidents Cup International team member. The South African owns seven PGA Tour victories and two PGA Tour Champions titles,. Goosen finished third in the inaugural Galleri Classic.

Lehman, a winner of 12 PGA Tour Champions and five PGA Tour titles, will be making his debut in the Galleri Classic. Lehman reached No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking in 1997 on the heels of winning the British Open Championship, the Tour Championship and being named the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year in 1996. Lehman owns three senior major titles.

A 13-time PGA Tour champion and winner of the 2001 PGA Championship and the 2018 U.S. Senior Open, Toms led wire-to-wire and made birdies on six of his last 10 holes to win the Galleri Classic at 16-under 200.

In 2024, The Galleri Classic will continue its partnership with six cancer-related, non-profit organizations based in the Coachella Valley – American Cancer Society/Palm Desert, The Desert Cancer Foundation, Eisenhower Health, Hanson House, Pendleton Foundation and Shay’s Warriors Life After Cancer – and will direct a portion of its proceeds from the event to fund these local charities. The Galleri Classic’s fans play a part in supporting the tournament’s off-course charitable endeavor when securing tickets online at  www.TheGalleriClassic.com .

The Galleri Classic‘s ticket options are available online at  www.TheGalleriClassic.com . Ticket offerings (March 27-31) include daily and weekly grounds tickets for $30 and $65, respectively, and clubhouse tickets (good only March 29-31) for $75 per day or $150 for all three competition rounds.

Limited availability remains for spots in The Galleri Classic’s official pro-am on March 27 and 28. The Galleri Classic Pro-Am provides an opportunity for golfers to play the Shore Course with members of the PGA Tour Champions for 18 holes. Amateurs interested in playing in the pro-am can seek more information and register at  www.TheGalleriClassic.com/pro-am

Former world No. 1s Lydia Ko, Jason Day win inaugural 2023 Grant Thornton Invitational

With partner Jason Day in the bunker, Lydia Ko stepped up with a 3-wood into the wind from 203 yards and struck the shot of the day on the par-5 17th, essentially locking up the victory at the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational.

“That is so nice,” marveled Day as the ball tracked through the air.

The two former No. 1s joined forces to top the mixed-team field,  earning $1 million, or $500,000 each . The final round featured a new modified four-ball format in which both players teed off from their respective tees and then switched for the second shot, playing that ball for the remainder of the hole.

PGA and LPGA: What can male amateurs learn from LPGA players? PGA Tour players weigh in at Grant Thornton

Ko and Day came into the penultimate hole at Tiburón Golf Club knotted with Canadians Brooke Henderson and Corey Conners – playing two groups ahead – at 25 under. While Ko didn’t manage to convert the eagle putt, the closing birdie put them one shot ahead going into the last. They parred the 18th to finish with a 6-under 66 and win by one with a 26-under 190 total.

“I don’t think I’ve seen so many female junior golfers out at an event,” said Day, “especially a PGA Tour event, as I did see them this week.

“This is something that I think we have to keep striving towards.”

The victory at Tiburon was a special kind of vindication for Ko, who failed to qualify for the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship in 2023 after winning the event the year prior.

“As soon as it came off the club face, I was like, I think it’s good, please be good, and it was heading right towards the pin,” said Ko. “I don’t think I could have hit that shot 100 times and it would turn out better.”

A self-described introvert, Ko admitted to being particularly nervous coming into this week having never met Day, who is 10 years older. Day said they’ll now leave Naples lifelong friends.

Major champion Karen Stupples, who follows the LPGA all season working for Golf Channel/NBC, commented after Saturday’s round of 6-under 66 in alternate shot that Ko’s game looked as good as she’d seen it all year.

Ko spent some time with Jin Young Ko’s instructor Siwoo Lee at a couple points this season and again, as Golf Channel analyst Morgan Pressel reported, last week at Lake Nona. Pressel said that Ko’s swing looked less manufactured at Tiburon and that she appeared to be thinking less mechanics.

Ko noted that she’d won her first event of the season on the Ladies European Tour in Saudi Arabia and the final one here at Tiburon. She’d like to cut out everything in between.

“I’m just trying to keep it really simple,” said Ko, “and the less manipulation I can do, the better, and I think I have a better understanding of my swing and my tendencies.”

At No. 19 in the world, Day was the highest-ranked PGA Tour player in the field at Tiburon while Ko ranked 11th. Ko has 19 LPGA titles, including two majors, while Day owns 13 PGA Tour victories, including one major.

Day called it a mostly stress-free victory, noting that he had full confidence that Ko would step up in the end. The Kiwi delivered.

LPGA and PGA: Lexi Thompson was an easy choice as a partner for Rickie Fowler at Grant Thornton

“She actually has a very strong champion mentality,” said Day. “When you’re out there talking to her, and you’re sitting there and you’re thinking, oh, you got a bad bounce or this and that, it’s never like, you’re right, I got a bad bounce or it went up against the lip … she’s always looking forward.”

Earlier this season, Day broke a five-year victory drought at the AT&T Byron Nelson and then later welcomed his fifth child with wife Ellie. With the whole brood on hand in Naples, Day joked that he and Tony Finau were fighting for strokes gained kids on the PGA Tour.

“When you win, and you’ll experience this one day when you have children yourself and you’re still playing,” Day said, turning toward Ko, “there’s nothing quite like having children run up to you after you win a tournament just because of all the emotions start to come out just because you can see how much your children love you and want to be there for you.

“Every time I get to experience that, it fills me. I’m just very grateful for that.”

Newlywed Ko, who has long said she’d be retired by 30, smiled and told Day that maybe she’d someday get that experience at a club championship.

Henderson and Conners, boosted by a pair of eagles, finished with a 9-under 63 on Sunday. A stalled-out finish of three pars to close the round – including the par-5 17th – kept the pair out of the winner’s circle.

“I was able to play with a lot of freedom knowing I had Brooke to back me up,” said Conners, who holed out for eagle on the par-4 ninth. “Yeah, it was so much fun. Just so impressed with her game.”

Madelene Sagstrom and Ludvig Aberg put together the round of the day on Sunday – a 12-under 60 – to vault up the board into solo third at 24 under. The Swedish pair have the same swing coach, and Sagstrom’s fiance is on Aberg’s bag.

The familiar duo spiced things up even more inside the ropes with some side bets. Sagstrom said she ended the round down $20.

“Personally, I’ve struggled a little bit with foursomes,” said Sagstrom, “both in Solheim Cups and in general. I think it’s kind of hard when you really don’t want to screw up someone else. “I felt comfortable today.”

Sagstrom echoed the thoughts of many this week when she that said outside-the-box events are what’s needed to grow the game.

“Lexi did get a bigger cheer than Rickie did on the tee box yesterday, and I take pride in that,” said Sagstrom. “It’s just been a great week to show off our games – even compared to each other.”

World No. 1 Lilia Vu had her visor signed by partner Joel Dahmen and his caddie after their closing 63. The camaraderie shone through for many teams who met in person for the first time in Naples.

“Our team’s going to have more fun than everyone else,” Dahmen promised at the start of the week, “that’s the No. 1 thing.”

They’re a lready talking about next year .

2024 Big 12 Tournament: No. 1 Houston looking to complete its revenge tour vs. Iowa State in title game

The cougars get a chance to defeat the third of the three teams it lost to this season when they face the cyclones for the big 12 championship.

NCAA Basketball: Big 12 Conference Tournament Semifinal- Texas Tech vs Houston

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – There was a moment Friday night at the Big 12 Tournament when the nation's No. 1 team with a bullet looked more than vulnerable. Fourth-seeded Texas Tech had been smacked upside its collective noggin, starting 1 for 12 from the field and trailing by 15 in the first half of its semifinal game against Houston .

"All year we've been pretty good about hitting first," Houston assistant coach Kellen Sampson said outside the Cougars' locker room. "That's pretty much a hallmark of our program. We don't hit back, we hit first. So we take it personally to get off to a good start. It's important we play the game on our terms."

And then the bottom fell out of another whoopin' by the No. 1 Cougars. Texas Tech Coach Grant McCasland had the right idea after watching this team teeter on the brink of getting blown out in the first 10 minutes – go at Houston's chest. That is, take the ball right at the Cougars. The Red Raiders made shots and basically nutted up without their third-leading scorer and top rebounder, guard Darrion Williams , who was out with an ankle injury.

March MadnessⓇ is better with friends, especially when you beat them! Get your bracket pools ready now and invite your friends, family and co-workers to play.

Part of what happened next was drawn up by Sampson in a reporter's notebook outside Houston's locker room following an 82-59 win over the Red Raiders that moved Houston into the Big 12 Tournament Championship Game.  Sampson's face lit up when asked the last time he played a five-guard lineup.

"Montana Tech Orediggers!" Sampson said.

Then he started the impromptu diagramming. On Friday, a leg injury to leading rebounder J'Wan Roberts dictated that Sampson use five guards at times to find a way past Tech.

But in Sampson World, any such inquiry merely opens the door to another anecdote. In  the early 1980s when Sampson was an unknown coach just starting at the small NAIA school in Butte, Montana, circumstances dictated a similar roster adjustment.

"I had one team that led the entire nation in free-throw percentage," Sampson recalled. "No shot clock, no three [back then] … Once we got up by four on the road, there weren't but three people that touched the ball.

"We never lost close games .. That's always been my Nirvana, to have a team full of point guards. Those things are hard to beat in a close game. Right in my wheelhouse."

So far, just about every obstacle set up in front of Sampson and the Cougars has been similarly knocked down. These are the best of times for Houston – top-ranked and likely the No. 1 overall seed even if the Cougars lose to Iowa State in Saturday's Big 12 Championship Game.

That was all but assured on Friday when top-seed contenders Arizona and Tennessee lost. Houston is so much in cruise control, Roberts could even be rested Saturday night.

"I just surrendered when I first got here," the 6-foot-7 forward from the Virgin Islands said. "I just tried to ride that wave of guys that came before me.  I learned a lot from them.

"Every set that coach puts in, every defensive scheme he puts in I never questioned it. I would say he's a hall of fame coach. He's been doing it the last 40 years."

NCAA Basketball: Big 12 Conference Tournament Semifinal- Texas Tech vs Houston

But that's getting ahead of the carnage that has been left in Houston's wake in Kansas City. Sampson has now won 30 in his first Big 12 season with Houston, his 13th overall counting 12 seasons at Oklahoma . The man has been around so long that a Saturday victory would put him second (with four) behind Kansas' Bill Self all-time (nine) in Big 12 Tournament championships.

In the quarters, the Cougars forced TCU into a 17-for-73 shooting performance. The Frogs actually had one more miss (56), than rebounds (55). TCU and Tech opened a combined 1 for 28 in the first half against Houston. The Red Raiders scrapped its way back to a 37-37 tie early in the second half before Houston systemically shredded the Red Raiders with separate runs of 20-1 and 13-2.

Houston starting guards Jamal Shead , LJ Cryer and Emanuel Sharp were joined off the bench by seniors Mylik Wilson and Damian Dunn to create that celebrated five-guard lineup scoring 66 of the 82 points. More importantly for them, the Cougars found another way to win.

They did it mostly without Roberts who was limited to seven minutes and two points having fallen awkwardly in the first half.

"I talked to a lot of people going into this game," Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "I was like, 'How do we get them on their heels enough to where you get open shots?' "

You usually don't against the powerhouse that is No. 1 in turnover margin, opponent field goal percentage, scoring defense and defensive efficiency.

"We are the fastest team in the country sideline-to-sideline," said Kellen Sampson, Kelvin's son. "Nobody flies like we do. It's like a type of football team that doesn't have beef up the middle. If you try to beat us with jet sweeps and screens we're going to run you down. But if you can line up and beat us through the middle of the floor [you're in trouble]."

Talk about being on a roll. Houston has now won 11 in a row since a Feb. 5 trouncing at Kansas.

"We got an education in Lawrence," Sampson lamented. "You know when you have everything in sync? The crowd, the team, the coaching staff. That just felt like somewhere we weren't invited."

Now they're making the bracket their own. The Cougars don't just make you miss, they make you feel like an outmatched 8-year-old kid clanging jumpers against your uncle in a game of H-O-R-S-E. They don't get mad, they get even.

"It's coming out and not being afraid of them," said Iowa State guard Curtis Jones , already looking ahead after a 76-62 win over Baylor .

Houston has won its last three by a combined 78 points. Now, you might as well call Kansas City home of Houston's Revenge Tour. In the space of a week it has beaten two of the only three teams that have defeated the Cougars – Kansas last Saturday by 30 in Houston and TCU Thursday in the Big 12 quarters.

Up next are the second-seeded Cyclones in that championship game. The teams split on each other's floor.

"You've got to beat us at our own game," Shead said. "The only people that really did that this year was Iowa State. They're very similar to us. We're very similar to them. Good teams beat each other. I'd say they have the blueprint, but we have to do our best job not to let them follow the blueprint."

Blueprints are fine. Just don't let Sampson near any reporter's notebooks. He loves the old days.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour

Taylor Swift has set a new record with the premiere of her “Eras Tour” concert film on Disney+ .

“ Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” had 4.6 million views on Disney+ in its first three days of release — making it the No. 1 music film ever on the platform, according to the company. Swifties watched 16.2 million hours of the blockbuster three-and-a-half-hour concert film on Disney+ over this past weekend. Disney+ defines a “view” as total stream time divided by runtime.

Other music films and specials currently available on Disney+ include Swift’s own “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions,” “Elton John: Farewell From Dodger Stadium,” “Black Is King: A Film by Beyoncé” and “The Beatles: Get Back.”

Disney reportedly paid  more than $75 million for worldwide streaming rights to “The Eras Tour”  concert film, which Swift’s company produced.

In its theatrical release, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” generated $261.7 million at the global box office after its Oct. 13 debut, making it the highest-grossing concert film to date. The film was released digitally via Universal Pictures on Dec. 13, Swift’s birthday, with three bonus songs not in the theatrical release — “Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer” and “Long Live” — which are also in the Disney+ version.

There’s probably a Taylor Swift lyric that’d make a fantastic opening line here, but I’m more of a Susanna Hoffs guy. So let’s just get into it, instead.

The three-and-a-half hour Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) concert film generated 16.2 million hours of viewing in its first three days of release, which translates into a record-setting 4.6 million views on Disney+ — making it the No. 1 music film ever on the platform.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) hit Disney+ last Thursday, March 14 a little ahead of its announced 9 pm ET start time. Disney+ is the only place to watch the concert film in its entirety, complete with songs only seen before at live concerts.

Swift fans (“Swifties” they are called, just as my friends and I are “Hoffheads”) were able to see the performances of new songs such as “cardigan” as well as four additional acoustic songs: “Maroon,” “Death by a Thousand Cuts,” “You Are in Love” and “I Can See You.”

How not at all surprised are you to see Eras Tour set yet another record, for most viewers of a music film on Disney+? Whose household out there seemingly (or literally) had it playing on a loop all weekend?

No….really? I didn’t think there was any interest in Ms Swift. lol

I am truly happy that Taylor is a success, but so tired of hearing about her. Its really overkill and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a news headline that Taylor Swift flushes her own toilet or blow her nose. It’s a bit ridiculous.

Power Rankings: Valspar Championship

Power Rankings

Change Text Size

If you already haven’t taken the time to confirm, the answer is yes. Someone other than Scottie Scheffler will win the Valspar Championship this week. No doubt that there was at least one entrant in the field who was curious that he wasn’t in it after the world’s top-ranked talent won consecutive tournaments.

A larger grouping than originally was planned is assembling on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. For the explanation, details of the host course and more, continue reading below the ranking of those projected to contend.

As of Monday afternoon, the field stands at 155 but alternates will not be called unless it drops below 144. If necessary to achieve the same objective, this provision also will apply to next week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open and the Valero Texas Open the week after that.

The Copperhead Course is a par 71 with five par 3s and a customary set of four par 5s. The anchor leg of the Florida Swing stood as the hardest of the series in relation to par a year ago when the field averaged 71.935. That also easily was highest among all par 71s throughout the 2022-23 season. The challenge isn’t unusual, though. That it averaged below par a few weeks later in the spring of 2021 and in its more familiar slot in March of 2022 was a surprise.

No matter what, the parkland track has teeth, so all red numbers will have felt well-earned. Although Copperhead can stretch to 7,340 yards, ball-striking is at a premium because overseeded rough is allowed to grow to 3½ inches and overseeded Bermudagrass greens average 5,800 square feet. The putting surfaces also are allowed to reach 12½ feet on the Stimpmeter.

Then there’s the Snake Pit that closes the inward half. Nos. 16, 17 and 18 collaborate for a par-4-3-4 test that averaged +0.593 strokes to par last year. A proper goal for the wannabe winner will be to arrive at it with the lead so as to swing over it unscathed to paydirt. Taylor Moore played it in bogey-free, 1-under for the week, with his only birdie coming on the par-4 16th in the finale.

A strong start also could be imperative. Favorable conditions with manageable breezes are expected for the opening round. That changes considerably as the threat for rain and storms encroach by Friday when winds could gust in excess of 30 mph for a few hours. It’ll calm relatively on the weekend. Daytime temperatures will climb into the 70s.

Here are all the songs in Taylor Swift's extended 'Eras Tour' film

W ith 10 studio albums (which will become 11 on April 19!) under her belt, Taylor Swift has more than enough songs to make up the set list to her nearly three-hour “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” film.

The film, which was first released in the U.S. and Canada on Oct. 12 and globally on Oct. 13, h it Disney+ on March 14 , bringing the record-breaking concert into subscribers' homes.

While most of the songs Swift performed on her "Eras Tour" made the cut, TODAY staffers who attended the movie premiere in Los Angeles Oct. 11 confirmed that a few tunes weren't featured in the film — at first.

The at-home rollout of the film has seen fan-favorite songs added back in. With the extended film on Disney+, fans are able to watch "the ENTIRE concert film for the first time ever, beginning to end," Swift said on Instagram.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about the "Eras Tour" film set list.

What songs were cut from the movie?

The initial theatrical release of the "Eras Tour" film saw several songs cut from the set list, including "The Archer," “No Body, No Crime," “Cardigan," and “Wildest Dreams."

“Long Live,” featured in the 2010 album “Speak Now,” was not shown during the movie, but it played during the credits.

Three of those songs were added for an extended version of the film, which became available to rent on digital platforms  in the U.S. and Canada on Dec. 13, Swift's birthday.

"Very happy to be able to tell you that the extended version of the film including “Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer” and “Long Live” will be available to rent on demand," Swift announced on Instagram Nov. 27.

In addition to an extended version, Swift released "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version)" on Disney+ March 14, featuring the “ENTIRE concert film,” including “Cardigan.”

One song still remains on the cutting-room floor after the extended film release — "No Body, No Crime."

While on tour, Swift originally opened her "Evermore" section with "'Tis the Damn Season." But once Haim joined Swift on tour as a concert opener, the ballad was swapped with "No Body, No Crime," an angsty rock track that features the band.

In all three versions of the "Eras Tour" film — the original theatrical release, the on-demand version and the Disney+ extended cut — the "Evermore" set opens with the witchy track, "Willow."

Are there any surprise songs included in the film?

Yes, there are! Swift performed unique surprise songs each night during her "Eras Tour." Surprise songs, also known as the "acoustic set," occur towards the end of each "Eras Tour" concert and typically involve an acoustic performance of two of Swift's songs, one on the guitar, one on piano.

During the initial theater release, two surprise songs appeared in the movie, which IMDb reports was filmed at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles during Swift's six-night run in August.

The two surprise tunes were “Our Song,” a track featured on Swift's 2006 self-titled debut studio album, and “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” featured on her most recent studio album, “ Midnights ," which came out in 2022.

The Disney+ release of the "Eras Tour" film will feature four additional acoustic songs: "Maroon," "Death By A Thousand Cuts ," "You Are In Love " and "I Can See You."

What is the ‘Eras Tour’ film set list?

Here’s the full set list featured in the extended “Eras Tour” film:

“Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince”

“Cruel Summer”

“You Need to Calm Down”

“The Archer”

“You Belong With Me”

“Love Story”

Long Beach State coach Dan Monson’s unemployment tour ends with loss to Arizona in first round

Dan Monson’s unexpected unemployment tour came to an end in Salt Lake City. The longtime Long Beach State coach and his team came up short in an upset bid of No. 2-seeded Arizona at Delta Center, as the Wildcats advanced with an 85-65 win.

Monson, the one-time architect of what’s now a juggernaut at Gonzaga and former coach of Minnesota , was fired prior to last week’s Big West Conference tournament , where the Beach won three games in three days, turning the 62-year-old into an emotional story of the season.

The story continued to take on a life of its own this week, as Monson turned his Wednesday press conference into a one-man act, equating himself to “Seinfeld” character George Costanza continuing to show up to work after being fired .

Things only got stranger Thursday, when a quote from Long Beach State athletic director Bobby Smitheran set social media into a frenzy. Smitheran, who was named Long Beach AD six months ago, seemingly credited the team’s run to the NCAA Tournament to his decision to fire Monson.

“My belief and the hope is that by doing what I did and the timing of it, they would play inspired, and that’s what they did,” Smitheran told the Associated Press. “I’m not trying to pat myself on the back, but it worked.”

Asked about Smitheran’s comment after the loss to Arizona, Monson opted to simply say, “We’ll never know,” and added that if the firing indeed “spurred the run,” then that’s fine by him.

Monson described a “range of emotions” about his career potentially coming to an end. Asked if he would like to coach elsewhere, he said, “I hope not, but that’s not all entirely up to me.” He said the last weeks have been a time of reflection and, in the end, “I’m proud of who I am.”

“It will hit me, I think, on Monday,” he said of his career possibly wrapping up.

Long Beach guard Jadon Jones said the postgame locker room was emotional, but there were no goodbyes “because he created a family.” Jones took a moment in the press conference to thank Monson as his teammates nodded. In the back of the room, Darci Monson, Dan’s wife, brushed away tears.

In the closing moment, Monson sent his deep reserves into the game, including his son, Maddox Monson . The walk-on played the final minute, then followed his father down the handshake line.

Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd, a longtime friend of Monson dating back to their days at Gonzaga, told reporters after the win that the treatment of Monson “isn’t right” and said he hopes another school will give him a head coaching opportunity.

The Beach hung with Arizona early on, leading by five with under five minutes remaining in the first half. But the Wildcats’ size and firepower took over in time. Arizona made 13 3-pointers, eventually breaking Long Beach’s zone defense, forcing Monson to switch out of it. All five Wildcat starters finished in double figures, led by Kylan Boswell ’s 20 points.

Arizona scored nearly 1.2 points per possession in the second half and broke the game open with a 17-2 run out of halftime.

The Wildcats, who were bounced as a No. 2 seed in a first-round upset to Princeton last year, improved to 26-8 on the season.
