How to choose the perfect road trip destination

Before you set off on your road trip, it’s important to do a little bit of planning so that you can make the most of your time.

Think about what kind of scenery you want to see. If you’re looking for some desert landscapes and rolling sand dunes, then a trip to Liwa Oasis is perfect. Or if you’re after some stunning mountain scenery, head to the Hajar Mountains.

You’ll also need to consider how much time you have and how far you want to travel. If you only have a few days, it’s best to stick to shorter trips within easy reach of Dubai. But if you’ve got a week or two to spare, there’s plenty of scope for longer road trips.

Finally, make sure you have a good map and plan your route carefully, so you don’t miss any of the best sights along the way!

What to expect on a road trip in Dubai

Before you set off on your road trip, it’s important to know what to expect. Here are a few things you need to know:

The UAE is a very safe country and violent crime is rare. However, as with any destination, it’s always important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings.

Driving in the UAE can be quite challenging, especially in the cities. Be prepared for busy roads, impatient drivers, and lots of beeping.

The weather in the UAE can be extreme, so make sure you pack sunscreen and plenty of water. You won’t likely have to drive in bad weather, however, as it only rains a few days out of the year (and they do cloud seeding to make this happen!).

Road trip from Dubai to the Empty Quarter.

Outta Here! Best Road Trips From Dubai

Fort al hamily at liwa oasis on the edge of the empty quarter (photo: hemis / alamy stock photo).

If you’re like most travelers to the United Arab Emirates, you’ll never venture beyond the safe embrace of its skyscraper-strewn cities. But that’s not you , right? You’re ready to put the pedal to the metal and discover the wealth of spectacular scenery that lies an easy drive from Dubai — from desert plains and dramatic fjords to lush oases, lofty dunes and more.

On the practical side, you’ll find first-rate roads, cheap fuel and fuss-free car rental. So summon your inner explorer, grab your International Driving Permit — a must-have here — and leave Dubai in the (sand) dust on one of these unforgettable road trips.

UAE road trip map

Desert: From Dubai to Liwa

The most rewarding of road trip s in Dubai is along sand-swept highways to remote Liwa — one of the Arabian Peninsula’s largest oases, on the edge of the Empty Quarter (the world’s largest contiguous sand desert). While Emiratis and expats associate this awe-inspiring part of Arabia with legendary explorer Wilfred Thesiger — the first to cross these colossal dunes on camel and foot — modern-day adventurers will recognize the 650-foot-high dunes from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” filmed here in 2014.

Distance/Duration: 230 miles/3 hours 45 minutes

Tip: Read Thesiger’s “Arabian Sands” (1959) for an appreciation of this inhospitable land.

Fjords: Dubai to Khasab, on the Musandam Peninsula in Oman

OK, so the Musandam Peninsula is not technically in the UAE (it’s an enclave of Oman). Still, this drive from Dubai to Khasab is one of the most jaw-dropping on the Arabian Peninsula. From the UAE-Oman border, the winding road hugs the coast — and each turn reveals yet another tranquil bay where fishermen mend nets and locals cross the beach to buy fresh seafood from the boats.

Distance/Duration: 122 miles/3 hours

Tip: Stay a night in Khasab for a dhow cruise and dolphin spotting — and, if you’re brave, an edge-of-your-seat, four-wheel-drive tour toward the heady peaks of 6,260-foot Jebel Harim mountain.

Bonus tip:  When hiring a car in Dubai, make sure the rental agency allows their vehicles to be driven into the Omani enclave — some companies don’t.

Oasis: Dubai to Al Ain

If you do only one road trip in the UAE, one of the best places to visit near Dubai is laidback Al Ain. Put the car in cruise control on the smooth, straight stretch of blacktop and focus on spotting some camels. (Those “ships of the desert” are tricky to detect against the tan-colored dunes.) Once in Al Ain, known as the Garden City for its lush greenery, you have handsome forts to explore, date-palm oases to discover and, at Hili Archaeological Park , Bronze Age tombs that will blow your mind.

Distance/Duration: 122 miles/90 minutes

Tip: Don’t miss the giddy, winding drive up Jebel Hafeet mountain — 4,098 feet! — for sweeping oasis and desert views.

Mountains: Dubai to the East Coast

The Dubai-to-Hatta section of this route offers some of the most sublime vistas in the country, from camel-dotted plains to russet-colored dunes — including Big Red, a famed rise popular among adrenaline junkies for sandboarding, quad biking and dune bashing (high-speed dune driving). At the high-altitude enclave of Hatta, the parched, purple-hued mountains are best appreciated from the town’s historic watchtowers. The spectacular drive north from Hatta along the east coast offers more scorched peaks skirted by white-sand beaches. (Take the coastal road that winds through Fujairah, Khor Fakkan and Al Badiyah and ends in Dibba.)

Distance/Duration: 203 miles/4 hours.

Tip: En route to Hatta, take a detour from the crossroads town of Al Madam and head to Al Shuwaib (15 miles/20 minutes) to see Arabian oryx (a large antelope) and gazelles frolicking on the dunes.

Sea: Dubai to the North Coast

The route to the seaside village of Ras Al-Khaimah doesn’t offer the scenic drama of other drives, but this trip from Dubai  is more about the destinations than the journey. Call into cities and towns along the way, and you’ll discover old wooden dhows bobbing in the harbor in Sharjah, stunning palm-lined sandy beaches in Ajman, restored wind-tower houses in Umm Al Quwain, atmospheric old souks in Ras Al Khaimah, and, in the arid mountains inland, centuries-old Portuguese forts and watchtowers.

Distance/Duration: 74 miles/90 minutes.

Tip: Take two hours to stroll Sharjah’s historic quarters, and an hour each in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al-Khaimah.

The best road trips & scenic drives in the UAE

Reading time: min

During my time in Dubai, I have taken many road trips and scenic drives in the UAE (United Arab Emirates)! Let me share some of my top picks!… Over the years, we had various cars at our disposal for these mini adventures! Ranging from a rental Toyota Corolla, an older Porsche Cayenne S, an Audi A5 Convertible, and a Maserati GranTurismo S…

Obviously if visiting the UAE, I advise to just rent a standard car. Most of the road trips & scenic drives below are easily done with any Toyota Corolla (or similar!). Just read my post about our road trip through Oman ! We had a great time!…

Which car to use on your UAE road trip?

For all below road trips & scenic drives I will provide my preferred type of car, more for fun and to give a bit of an idea of the drive. Choosing between a:

  • Porsche Cayenne S – Loads of space and allowing for (slight) off-road experiences.
  • Audi A5 Convertible – Offering wide scenic views on more relaxed drives.

Let’s dive into the best road trips & scenic drives in the UAE!

Best road trips & scenic drives in the UAE #1: Hatta

The overall road from Dubai to Hatta gets windier and more mountainous the closer you get to Hatta ! As soon as you reach the Hatta Fort Hotel roundabout, take a left! Here starts a very nice drive full of sharp curves, blind corners, surface changes, sudden steep inclines, and unexpected dips.

This road is not suitable for high-speed drives , as the surface isn’t completely smooth, and it is close to a cliff. This road is more to enjoy the great surroundings of Hatta Mountains!…

Car of Choice: Audi A5 Convertible

Best road trips & scenic drives in the UAE #2: Jebel Jais

The road towards Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE, had to be on the list!… Located around 1.5-hour from Dubai it is part of the Hajar Mountain range. (Mountains that will offer more road adventures further below). The road has many hairpin bends which ensure an exhilarating ride up. After enjoying the views at the top the road down is similarly exciting!…

Best road trips & scenic drives in the UAE #3: Khasab, Musandam (Oman)

Staying in the Hajar Mountain area, the next stop is the breathtaking journey towards Khasab in Musandam (Oman). See my detailed Musandam post for all my experiences and tips & tricks!

As it means a border crossing into Oman, make sure you have the right papers (from your rental agency)!

This drive leads you via the beautiful Musandam coastline with fjords and bays. You could take the full coastal road via Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras al Khaimah…

Car of Choice: Audi A5 Convertible (to take in the Musandam coastal views)

Best road trips & scenic drives in the UAE #4: Khorfakkan Road

The drive over the Khorfakkan road is very nice one, as I also describe in my Fujairah post . Crossing the Hajar mountains, this road takes you from Sharjah to Fujairah. I takes you past the Al Rafisah Dam. Definitely add this to your itinerary! The Khorfakkan road likely one of my favourite stretches of road in the UAE !…

Best road trips & scenic drives in the UAE #5: Kalba Road

Well, it is clear that the Hajar Mountain range provide some great road trips & scenic drives for the UAE!… The last road in from the area in this list is the Kalba road . From Dubai you take the Kalba-Sharjah road. Starting as a straightforward road you will soon see the mountains rising ahead. This is where plenty of bends make this a very enjoyable mountainous ride. After the tunnel you reach the scenic coasts of Fujairah .

Car of Choice: Maserati GranTurismo S (let the engine roar in the tunnel)

Best road trips & scenic drives in the UAE #6: Jebel Hafeet

We leave the East and drive towards the South from Dubai towards Al Ain (read full details about Al Ain here). Jebel Hafeet is the mountain that towers over Al Ain. Follow the steep winding 7km asphalt road towards the top to enjoy breath taking views…

Car of Choice: All type of cars have their benefits depending on your wider trip itinerary!

Al Ain Jebel Hafeet

Best road trips & scenic drives in the UAE #7: Liwa Oasis

On this final road trip, let’s head East , this time towards the Liwa Oasis in the Empty Quarter. I have created a detailed post of all you need to know about Liwa Oasis and the Moreeb Dune ! The road here is mostly flat and straightforward and it is possible to camp slightly off road !… It is about a 3.5-hour drive from Dubai, so overnight stay is likely the better option!…

Car of Choice: Porsche Cayenne S – most comfortable on the long (high-way) drive and allowing for camping.

Moreeb Liwa

Fun Fact:  Beyond Abu Dhabi, towards Saudi Arabia, the roads are very quiet. Therefore, the  speed limit is increased until 160 km/h … The highest posted speed limit in the world.

Moreeb Liwa 160km sign

Bonus: Sightseeing in Dubai

With Dubai being one of the (super)car capitals of the world the best way to explore Dubai is by car !… For full details of Dubai, see the ultimate insider itinerary of Dubai . However, as bit of a bonus to this post, lets venture out to key sights as the Burj Al Arab or the Burj Khalifa … Or stroll past the Umm Sequim Beaches or jampack yourself in the queue of JBR Boulevard where most people drive to see and be seen…

Road Trips & Scenic Drives UAE

The cars that got away

Well, I believe these road trips & scenic drives, as well as the related posts, provide a great basis to venture out into the United Arab Emirates! When writing this post the only car we still own in our ‘car park’ is the Audi A5 Convertible … The already older Porsche Cayenne ‘died’ on my a few years ago and was replaced by the Maserati GranTurismo S .

Road Trips and Scenic Drives UAE

As you can read on my About Page, we do still have our base in Dubai! However, we are traveling (Even more) extensively around the world! Given our new nomadic setup, one car is enough for our stays in the UAE. Therefore, we chose to sell the Maserati. In comparison, The Audi A5 convertible is by far the much more reliant, risk-free and cost-effective choice…

So, while I actually do not care too much about cars, this post is a bit of a homage to the ‘cars that got away’ …

7 of the best road trips from Dubai

Having just wrapped up our adventure holidays in the UAE, can’t stop raving about the fabulous road trips from Dubai: between Khasab’s rugged coastlines where we swam with turtles and sailed with dolphins; to the deserts and majestic Hajar mountains and Jebel Jais; to legendary days out with Ferrari World in Yas island, to art filled Abu Dhabi and chilled white sand beach of Saadiyat island; the Emirates have spoilt us once again so much in 2 weeks! Our UAE road trip itinerary started conveniently in Dubai airport, a mere 7 hours flight from London to blue skies and balmy weather; thereafter Ras Al Khaimah based for 6 days (for Oman, desert and mountains adventures); Abu Dhabi for 5 days and to wrap up, 4 days in Dubai.

Sailing with dolphins by Musandam fjords

And yes it is difficult to leave behind Dubai’s glam Palm hotels and funky Palm West Beach parties; but there is so much more to UAE to explore and indulge in! Here are some of our favourites Dubai and Abu Dhabi itinerary collected over the years!

Fab walk by Saadiyat island white sand beach

1. Ras Al Khaimah is so much more peaceful than the busy big city of Dubai, and if you are like us, in need to recharge first before having lots of fun, this is the right place. The is most Northern emirate that spreads across 2500 sq kilometres. Our base was Hayat Island and Marbella villas , right next to boutique newly open Intercontinenta l; we loved chilling by the sea or kids splashing by our villa’s pool and working out at the gym, playing table football and pool; dining and wining at Levant in the evening as well as sipping cocktails by Noho .

Cheers to Intercontinental Ras Al Khaimah and Noho cocktails

We’ve also explored the area, wining and dining is good, sunset cocktails by Waldorf Astoria happy hour; indulged into Karma Kafe (by Buddha Bar) ‘s fuming cocktails, sushi and ceviche; tested Hayat Island casual eateries and markets. It makes a wonderful pied a terre for further adventures as well, and if you are like us, 6 days are much needed!

Sunset by Hayat Island in Ras Al Khaimah

2. Khasab Oman daytrip , sailing on traditional Arabic dhow, swimming with turtles and finding dolphins is a must for 7 of the best road trips from Dubai! A trip from Dubai or Ras Al Khaimah is relatively easy with an early start; we drove in our own car to Oman border where we have been greeted by Khasab Tour guys for the crossing (our rental car specifically excluded driving in Oman and for 1 day on this occasion we thought best to go with the terms rather than shop around for a more generous geography for the rental car).

Snorkelling in Khasab and swimming with turtles

Worked out very well, a beautiful sunrise by the mountains, a quick border cross UAE-Oman, 8:30am we were in Khasab sipping Arabic coffee! One magic day by Musandam fjords, back to majestic Hajar mountains, sailing with dolphins and swimming with green turtles, a  generous lunch by boat with barbecued freshly caught local fish, salads, hummus and few other Omani dishes!

Sailing with dolphins by Musandam fjords

3. While Jebel Jais is located in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, it warrants its own road trip from Dubai. UAE’s highest peak has stunning views but it is also home to some exhilarating rides: the world’s longest zipline and the Jais Sledder! On this trip we had to content ourselves with sunrise and sunset roadviews as the heavy showers affected the fun!

UAE road trip itinerary : sunset UAE Oman border

4. The desert! A 45-minute scenic drive from Dubai International Airport, Al Wadi Nature Reserve nestles within the 500-hectare glorious indigenous wildlife such as antelopes, Arabian oryx, camels and gazelles. We had dinner under the stars at the Farmhouse in here and loved Ritz Carlton Bedouin-style oasis.

Dinner under the stars in the desert @ Ritz Carlton Al Wadi

5. The boys favourite adventure day out was Ferrari World by Yas Island , the kids labelled it as legendary ! Fun parks and rides are all at a different level in here and we found frankly 1 day not sufficient to exhaust so many fabulous options: 9 years old favourite was the  Turbotrack with a smile 😅; 6 years old favourite racing GP junior and clip and climb; the other half favourite Ferrari simulator; my favourite, the karting and Formula Rossa junior.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

Ferrari world was a wonderful adventure of rollercoasters and ziplines inside the sleek Yas Mall, dedicated article coming soon!

Turbo Track with a smile from a 9 years old

6. Abu Dhabi ! Somehow the life in UAE’s capital flows gentler here, the pace is sweet and few days recovery after the NYE parties were great! We could not decide on a single base, so we ended up with 2 fantastic days at Fairmont and thereafter 3 days at Ritz Carlton . We have raved extensively about Abu Dhabi in the past, our dedicated article in here .

Abu Dhabi Ritz Carlton

Louvre Abu Dhab i is a must on Dubai and Abu Dhabi itinerary: Jean Nouvel’s architecture is magnificent and sunsets especially gorgeous in there; the permanent collection is filled with glorious antiquities (that our Percy Jacksons fan adored), whilst the children museum visionary and engaging.

Louvre Abu Dhabi - kids loved the permanent collection

The other must see of Abu Dhabi we reckon is Sheikh Zayed Mosque : the largest in UAE, its architectural grandeur meant to reflect the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with a contemporary art twist. Swarovski crystals chandeliers and mosaic marbles are just some of the highlights; it makes a stunning sight at sunset – we soaked in daily from our Ritz Carlton glam pied a terre!

Road trips from Dubai : Sheikh Zayed Mosque at sunset

7. Saadiyat island, a natural island we felt in love with 10 years ago,  500 metres off the coast of Abu Dhabi island. We love the white sand, chilled vibes and in 2023 we found St Regis beach as stunning as we left it, Turquoiz now a fabulous Buddha Bar , as good as Buddha Bar Mykonos  by Santa Marina!

Buddha Bar by St Regis Saadiyat with kids

7 fantastic options for road trips from Dubai and one great UAE road trip itinerary, we have done it within 10 days, one could easily make 2 weeks out of it though ! And once we soaked in all the beauty and exploring, we found the pool parties still there by W Palm and bohemian Palm West Beach !

Dubai and Abu dhabi itinerary: Atlantis dining - Ossiano, reserved for kids above 10 years old!

UAE we had a blast once again and will be back! For freshly pressed Doha to Dubai by road : Qatar versus UAE hols head here ; for  Abu Dhabi & UAE around dress codes head here ; for more inspiration in the Middle East and a 10 days roadtrip from Dubai to Oman head here ( Muscat , Al Hajar mountain s, the wadis, dessert and Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve) . For more roadtrips in Morocco head here .

Dubai and Abu dhabi itinerary: Sunset by Fairmont

Disclosure: Many thanks to Ferrari World and Louvre Abu Dhabi for the press passes, overexcited kids and opinions in here entirely ours.

Incredible Road Trips In The UAE For First-Timers

' data-src=

Road-tripping in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) offers an exciting blend of historic attractions, modern marvels, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

Embarking on a road trip through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is an extraordinary journey that unveils a land of captivating contrasts. From the bustling metropolis of Dubai, where futuristic skyscrapers pierce the sky, to the timeless desert landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see, the UAE offers a road tripper’s paradise.

As you traverse the well-maintained highways and venture off the beaten path, you’ll discover a nation steeped in rich history, adorned with architectural marvels, and graced with natural wonders waiting to be explored. So, fasten your seatbelt and get ready for an exhilarating road trip adventure that will lead you through a tapestry of culture, luxury, and awe-inspiring scenery in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula.

Best Time to Visit the UAE

How to get around in the uae, from dubai to abu dhabi: modern wonders, the northern emirates: mountains, forts, and coastlines, al ain: the garden city and historic oasis, the desert adventure: liwa oasis and the empty quarter, finding fjords in the musandam peninsula.

Situated on the Arabian Peninsula, facing the Persian Gulf to the north and Oman Sea to the east, the United Arab Emirates has a hot, desert climate. With blistering hot summers, undoubtedly, the best time to take a road trip in the UAE is during the milder winter weather, broadly speaking November to April.

During the winter, it is usually clear, bright blue sky days and mild temperatures, rainfall is rare. Should you face thunderstorms or treacherous conditions in the UAE, however, it is best not to hit the roads as flash flooding can occur and many drivers are not used to such conditions, making it hazardous for everyone.

The busiest time of year for visiting the UAE is over the Christmas-New Year break and spring break time (around March and April ); plan accommodation in advance accordingly.

Also, take note of religious occasions such as Ramadan and Eid when planning your UAE visit dates. On public holiday weekends you’ll find the attractions we mention in this article exceptionally busier; if you’re visiting from overseas, Monday to Thursday will be much quieter days to take a road trip around the UAE.

With most public transport in the UAE limited to the big cities and Intercity buses, the best way to truly explore the United Arad Emirates is to hire a car and get out on the road.

We recommend DiscoverCars.Com to search across different providers for a hire car – give it a try here:

It’s important to bear in mind that city driving in Dubai especially can be tough. There are large multi-lane freeways that move FAST, multi-lane roundabouts, truck lanes and fast lanes to think about. Some top pointers for playing it safe on UAE roads:

  • Driving in the UAE is on the right-hand side of the road, the steering wheel on the left.
  • If your drivers licence is not in English or Arabic, you will need an International Drivers Permit.
  • Road signs are all written in English and Arabic.
  • The sign posted maximum speed limits have 20km leeway before you receive a fine, so you will find that traffic in the left-hand lanes will move faster than the posted limits; stick to the middle lane if you’re unsure (the right lanes are usually reserved for slow-moving heavy trucks and buses).
  • Take on board these safety tips for driving in desert conditions if you’ll be leaving the major cities
  • All the drives we explain here can be tackled in an ordinary 2WD vehicle; it’s not recommended to go off-roading into the desert or wadis in the UAE unless you’re with other experienced drivers or as part of a tour.

Best Road Trips in UAE

Although you can set out from anywhere in the UAE to commence your road trip, we will assume you are starting from Downtown Dubai when calculating time and distance.

  • Distance: 140 kms / 87 miles
  • Time Needed: 4 hours to 2 days

Starting with the most popular and easy to reach day trip destination from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital city is home to stunning architecture and thrilling adventures.

The number one attraction in the UAE is visiting the impressive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Other architecturally brilliant buildings we would recommend include The Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island and Qasr Al Watan, the country’s Presidential Palace.

The sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

History buffs, make time in your road trip to see the city’s oldest building Qasr Al Hosn, and for nature lovers, the Jubail Mangrove Walk on Jubail Island is a must-see.

Outside of the city you’ll be glad to have your own wheels to see the more remote parts of the Emirate. Al Wathba Fossil Dunes are fascinating sand dune formations and nearby you’ll find the utterly instargammable Al Wathba Salt Lake – Google Map them for exact pin drops!

And not forgetting the kids, theme park buffs will love a day on Yas Island. With 4 family theme parks including SeaWorld, Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld, you will not run short of kid-friendly activities in Abu Dhabi .

Whilst a simple visit down the road to the Grand Mosque and back could be achieved in under 4 hours on a round trip from Dubai, we recommend you dedicate at least 2 to 3 days of your UAE itinerary to exploring Abu Dhabi if time will allow.

Where to stay: For beach vibes, you want one of the stunning resorts that line Saadiyat Beach , or for convenience to the theme parks and Abu Dhabi Airport, stay on Yas Island .

  • Distance: 113 kms / 70 miles
  • Time Needed: 4 hours to 1-2 days

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), sitting to the northeast of Dubai has earned itself the reputation of the Adventure Emirate. From sea to sky-high mountains (yes, there’s a mountain range in this desert country!) you can enjoy many unique experiences on a trip to Ras al Khaimah.

Whilst perhaps more famous in recent years for its string of fancy waterfront resorts, Ras Al Khaimah is home to the tallest peak in the country Jebel Jais, in the Hajar Mountains which run the entire length of the country’s east coast and all through the east coast of Oman.

Winding mountain road up the tallest peak Jebel Jais in Ras al Khaimah, UAE

The spectacular 30-kilometer tarmacked mountain drive, full of switchbacks and steep inclines is one of the most spectacular scenic driving roads in the country.

Near the peak of Jebel Jais, this is an outdoor adventure lover’s paradise with the opportunity to take on the longest zipline in the world. There are additionally aerial ropes courses, Via Ferrata and many more adrenaline-pumping adventures .

Where to stay: If budget permits, The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah Al Wadi Desert is one of the best desert resorts in the UAE. Closer to the beach, you’ll find a great range of accommodation options on Marjan Island.

  • Distance: 145 kms / 90 miles
  • Time Needed: 6 hours to a full day

The historic Oasis City of Al Ain, also known as the Garden City has a reputation as the birth place of the UAE, where the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed was born.

The drive itself to Al Ain is a relatively straight forward freeway drive from Dubai in around 90 minutes; its the fascinating adventures that await when you arrive make it best to have your own car.

The centre of town is dominated by the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Ain Oasis, a 1,200 hectare shaded park with over 147,000 date palm trees and demonstrating the traditional falaj watering system. Other historic sites dating back to the bronze age are dotted around the city outskirts.

Al Ain oasis in the UAE

The Al Ain Zoo is also highly acclaimed as one of the cities best attractions. With the addition of a safari a few years ago this makes for a fascinating desert adventure that kids and adults alike will enjoy.

The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre within the zoo is one of the best educational and history resources in the country if you want to learn about the ancient heritage and physical geography of the Arabian Peninsula.

Plenty of other museums also wait you in Al Ain; for history buffs the Al Ain Palace Museum and the Al Jahili Fort are must-stops. You can also check in to the the more modern Qasr al Mawaji , birth home of the former UAE President and ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa.

The highlight for drivers, though, is the climb to the top of Jebel Hafeet, the tallest point in Abu Dhabi Emirate. The steep drive from Green Mubazzarah (a park with natural springs) at the mountain to the peak will take around 30 minutes each way, winding to the top and offering spectacular views over to Oman.

Where to stay: Although a little dated these days, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet on top of Jebel Hafeet affords you some incredible scenic views. We like the Al Ain Rotana for a good city stay close to the Al Ain Oasis, or adventure seekers will love the glamping options at Jebel Hafit Desert Park.

  • Time Needed: full day – overnight

If you’re up for an Arabian Nights style adventure into the desert dunes then this road trip into the Liwa Desert is for you.

It’s not called the Empty Quarter without reason, swathes of desert which make up the vast majority of the land mass of the UAE are only accessible via a few well maintained paved roads that take guests into a complete different side of the Emirates.

Those with a 4WD and the right equipment can take on the vast dunes or for a more sedate experience, try one of the luxury resorts of glamping options to experience the incredibly star lit nights and days.

freshly paves road through the liwa desert

If you feel that any of the landscape looks familiar, the Liwa desert is part of the backdrop for the planet Jakku in Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

NB it’s not recommended to drive in the Liwa Desert in the peak heat of the day, you should look to explore early morning and late afternoons/evenings. Off-roading is only for those who really know what they’re doing sand driving.

Where to stay : Unmissable is a night in Anantara Qasr al Sarab Desert Resort , the ultimate of luxurious desert experiences in the UAE (or anywhere in he world, for that matter). Those on a smaller budget could try spending the night near Madinat Zayed in the Tilal Liwa Desert Retreat , or try the new glamping experience at Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa .

judging at a camel beauty pageant, al dhafra united arab emirates

Top Tip : Visiting the western region during the Al Dhafra Festival (dates vary annually but usually around December/January) you could get the opportunity to see a camel beauty pageant! No laughing matter, this is serious business and one for the most unique experiences in the UAE where you will see owners competing for millions In prize money at the coverted Al Mazayan. Watch camels being traded on Millionaires Row and soak in the atmosphere and this traditional Bedouin event

How do you fancy taking on a whole new country during your road trip from Dubai? The drive from Dubai to Khasab on the Musandam Peninsula sees you at the very tip of the Arabian peninsula, just 40 kms from Iran over the Strait of Hormuz!

Despite driving much of the way through the United Arab Emirates, Musandam is actually an exclave of Oman. You will be crossing an international border, so visas and passports will be required and proof of vehicle ownership with permission to cross the border is required (make sure if you’re hiring a car that this is included!)

  • There’s a great detailed guide here exactly how to cross the border into Oman from the UAE

coastal road around a peninsula in Musandam, Oman

Whilst the drive through northern Ras Al Khaimah can feel a little industrial, the moment you cross the Al Darah border, you enter the most incredible coastal journey. The highway winds its way around the rocky khors.

Once you are in Khasab, kick back and relax as life moves a lot slower here. The regional capital is very small, but the starting point of fabulous cruising into the khors (mountainous fjords). You can join a dolphin-watching tour or hire your own private dhow for a serene adventure out on the water, even find your own private beach.

Top Tip: Avoid heading out on this journey Friday afternoon and coming back on a Sunday night as you are you’ll likely encounter long queues at the border crossing when local residents also take to the road. Remember accommodation options are limited so its highly recommended to pre-book if you want to stay overnight in Khasab.

More Tips For Visiting the UAE

  • Check you have the right visa for entering the UAE. Many nationalities can enter the UAE with a free Visa on arrival but don’t get caught out; equally if you’ll be crossing into Oman be aware most nationalities will require a Visa .
  • With the fast-pace nature of construction in the UAE, roads can change quickly! Navigation apps are generally up to date, and you could get by with just Google Maps, though many locally prefer to use Waze as the best navigation app for the UAE ( Google Play | App Store ).
  • Be mindful that you can lose mobile reception once you leave the big towns and major freeways, we recommend you keep an offline map on your phone.
  • If heading beyond the cities, remember to fuel up when you can. Despite being an oil-rich country, you may be surprised there are no fuel stations when you need one in the more remote corners of the country!

The Best Road Trips in Dubai

There’s nothing quite like packing up your car and hitting the road to embark on an adventure. You can blast your favorite songs, listen to an audiobook, or chat with friends until you reach your destination.

Whether you’re traveling to Dubai for work, pleasure, or moving there, there’s so much to explore outside this stunning city. Sneaking time in for a quick or prolonged road trip needs to be on your to-do list, whatever the reason you’re in Dubai. If you’re unsure where to go, here are the seven best road trips to take from Dubai.

Ras Al-Khaimah

If you’re looking for the perfect combination of adventure and history, then you need to have Ras Al Khaimah on your life of road trips. It’s only 115 km from Dubai, making it the perfect day trip, but we think you’ll want to stay longer!

Ras Al-Khaimah is one of the most adventurous emirates because it features mountain and coastal landscapes. This city’s best things to do are:

  • Mountain activities in the Jais Adventure Park
  • Water sports including paragliding
  • Exploring the rich history of the Emirate across its museums and historic sites

Some of the top things to do in Ras Al-Khaimah include visiting the Ras Al-Khaimah National Museum , the Saqr Park, and tackling one of the longest ziplines at Jebel Jais.

Unlike other emirates in coastal areas from Dubai, Al Ain is more inland, and the drive there is an adventure on its own. The drive is 145 km away, so you can get there in less than two hours without traffic.

This beautiful drive features mountains, natural springs, and plenty of greenery. Al Ain is the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the world’s oldest settlement that’s still inhabited.

If you love hiking, then you’ll love hiking near Abu Dhabi’s tallest peak, Jebel Hafeet. You can even drive up it for spectacular views without the strenuous work. Other popular attractions in Al Ain include Wadi Adventure and the Al Ain Zoo.

Hatta is roughly 135 km to the east of Dubai. This beautiful inland emirate has plenty of stunning mountain views, historical attractions, and the possibility of exciting adventures. When you need to escape the hustle and bustle of Dubai, Hatta is one of the best places because while there’s a lot to do, it’s much quieter.

This town is particularly appealing to those who love being outdoors. You can go hiking or take in the beautiful mountain views below.

You’ll want to make time for other popular things if you’re road tripping to Hatta, like going on a mountain safari, kayaking in the beautiful blue waters, soaking in the Hatta Rock Pools, and seeing the Hatta Dam.

Fujairah is nearly a straight shot across the country to the east and just north of the Oman border . During the entire 121 km road trip, you’ll be mesmerized by all the beautiful scenery you’ll see on your way there.

This option is one of the best road trips from Dubai that’s great for families, but all travelers can enjoy this place. One of the most popular things to do when you arrive is to spend the day lounging at the beaches.

Besides soaking up the sun at the beautiful beaches, other fun things to do here include seeing the Fujairah Fort, the Al Hayl Castle, and the beautiful Sheik Zayed Mosque. This option is a must-see area as the only emirate on the east coast.

Dibba is only a 143 km drive from Dubai and a great place to be simultaneously near the water and mountains. While you can experience this in many parts of the country, there are other reasons you should take some time to drive to Dibba.

Dibba is one of the most relaxing destinations in the UAE, so when you need a break from the city, this is the place to be. It’s a fantastic area to post up at the beach for the entire day. You can lounge in the sun, swim, and participate in watersports at many beaches.

Some other activities you’ll love here include visiting the public markets for good, public parks, and appreciating the beauty with a scenic drive.

Liwa is one of the furthest road trips you can take from Dubai, but we promise it’s worth it. It’s about 333 km to Liwa, which is between three and four hours to the south. People go to this destination when they want to spend time in the desert.

The city is filled with history, culture, and plenty of things for you to do, whether it’s for the day or a few days. People love visiting Liwa and attending the Liwa Date Festival because it has plenty of food, activities, and music.

If you’re not in town for the festival, you can explore the several forts in town, the Sheik Hamad Auto Museum, and the town center. Riding camels through the dunes is a must and makes for some great photo opportunities for adventurous souls.

Last, we have Kalba, which is only 130 east of Dubai. This area is a quaint little fishing village that is filled with a lot of biodiversity. It’s the perfect road trip for those who love exploring nature and can appreciate its beauty. Remember to bring your camera along because you won’t want to miss capturing the views.

When you’re here, you can kayak through the oldest mangrove forest in the region, the Khor Kalba. Falconry is popular here, and you can experience this art form at the Kalba Bird of Prey Center.

Whatever you do during your stay here, you need to check out the Bait Sheik Saeed Bin Hamad Al Qasimi. It’s a heritage house with beautiful Islamic artwork and collectibles.

Final Thoughts

While Dubai is a great city that you can take days exploring, there’s so much more the UAE can offer. Whether you can only make time for one destination or are making it your goal to hit all seven, you won’t regret taking a road trip while visiting Dubai.
