FIrst , tell us about your solar system.

I don't actually have one yet 😁 However, plan is 3- 330w panels, DC-DC charger and I'm still deciding on batteries but minimum of probably 600Ah.

3-4 hours of AC-rooftop with that battery bank in 100⁰f ODT exclusively from your 600ah. Less if you have a couple days with no solar charging. Easy peasy. Use the steady state of your AC consumption. Inverter will have to handle the in-rush of the compressor. I went with a Penguin2, which we do not like. In practice, we use a portable evaporative cooler which draws a constant 120w and 7 GPD when needed. Once it gets above 105⁰f, or anything above 50% humidity they don't work very well. We 'turn the key' and head to higher altitude. Think long and hard before installing ANY compressor based cooling. Unless of course you have shore power. It can be done but the Promaster only has so much real estate for solar panels. We started out with 14,400wh of LifePo⁴ in two banks of six. Six of the original batteries were removed to accommodate a thirty gallon tank. We do not miss the extra bank capacity because our current solar capacity will not recharge such a large bank. However, if we could find a suitcase heat pump that would live under the sink, our solar (with cargo tethered) would probably be sufficient during the summer months. Insulate, insulate and insulate some more. Install as much solar as you can reasonably fit (or tow a cargo w/caboodles of solar). Of course, if your weather is anything like the summer humid Southeast, buy yourself a Honda1000 inverter for any deficiencies. Your 600ah battery bank will work just fine. I have a whole lot more to say about the importance of doing an energy audit. Gary has an Excel spreadsheet to get that started.

Ha, my soloar is here in boxes along with the roof rack, but I am not powering a/c with it. I was curious as to the size of your system, planned or real, since a/c takes a pretty good chunk of amps to run. The 'real' solar experts will chime in soon, but it looks like your system will provide the minimum requirements to run 12v a/c, provided the weather cooperates. I looked hard at a roof top 12v a/c, but in the end went with a conventional one that I can run on a 2000 genny in a pinch. Most of the time, we stay at parks that have electricity, so my solar will only be 310 watts and 200ah of lithium. Another consideration is, will both of those units you linked physically fit under the van without hanging down to catch on the rock it sees?

No real difference. You can get the same parts from the same factory in China from Alibaba for about $400-500. You are just paying for marketing, nice install materials and instructions, technical support if you have an issue, and someone to stand behind and warrant the system. I don't think there is going to be any real difference in performance. Pick whatever fits or looks better for your application. If I do air conditioning in another van, I might not since I don't use mine that often, I will probably go the chinese kit route. I am not one to always go for the cheapest, but this is one area where I don't see any reason to spend more on the same parts. Automotive air conditioning systems are a commodity, and these are just automotive systems with a 12V DC compressor, and good packaging and marketing. If I had to spend money on a name brand kit (probably because I was installing it for a customer) I would buy the cheaper one of these two.

Hey! I know ohecht has the undermount split AC---I am planning on using this method as well but upgrading the kit so it can be doubled as a heat source by installing a hydronic water heater (I stuck out my feelers for this on here but no responses yet!

Can only speak to my own experience... I've got 700 watts of solar on the roof, and a Cruise n Comfort 12v ac. You weren't planning to run the ac from straight solar were you? My unit draws from 55-70 amps at higher power settings (live in FL), never seen my solar array bring in more than about 20-25 amps. I run a pretty large battery bank, knew from the get-go I would need the ability to run the ac without the engine going (battery bank charges from the alternator as well). Can't speak to the Canadian product, but I've been happy with our Cruise n Comfort. It struggles a bit in the heat of the FL summer, but it is very quiet, and CnC's customer support has been excellent. I've heard nightmare stories of folks having difficulty with conversations inside their van when the ac is running. Ours is a background hum. Had some self-inflicted set-backs with my ac unit, Chris was great about helping me troubleshoot and then sending me parts to get me up & running. Hope that helps. Please let me know if I can provide other info. This forum's been great in helping me to make decisions like the one you're facing.

Yeah, you're right. The 20-25 amp figure is just the best I've seen on it sitting in my driveway, which is partially shaded much of the time. Haven't taken the time to park it in full sun at midday, see what I'm getting. Even accounting for efficiency losses I figure I should be getting more like 30-45 amps. Either way, can't see running a 12v ac using just solar panels, but fortunately didn't plan to do so when designing my system. Got wisdom to share?

What size charge controller? When in full sun, is there any shading? Series or parallel? Drain your battery bank to say 50% and see what your Pmax hits. Based on the amp draw you are reporting for the a/c, I would think you should be pretty close ( within 20 amps?) to being able to run the unit during the heat of the day without drawing too much from your battery bank...at least this time of the year with sun position. You will know if everything is copasetic once you see your Pmax, even if that figure is momentary. A few ground employed panels may give you a chance at running your a/c during the hottest part of the day. BTW, start you a/c earlier in the day to get a headstart on the latent load.

Seems we have the makers of both cruise N comfort and undermount in this thread... Do either of your companies plan to offer heat pump versions in the future?

Cruise Split AC 1.5 Ton Reviews

cruise ac company reviews

We purchased CRUISE 1Ton AC from Navi Mumbai dealer. But from very first day it was not giving cooling. After complaining multiple times to dealer and company, they send some technician, who was doing multiple experiments with AC. But he could not diagnosis the problem. Then we requested to dealer to replace or return back our AC, but he clearly denied for the same. Finally we logged the complaint to consumer court against the dealer and Cruise company. After that dealer was ready to take it back & refund our money after deduction of installation charges and Out door stand. Our Family suffered more than one month in this process. So we Never recommend this AC to new buyers. There are other better brands AC available in Market at Less prices. So go thru the same, but avoid CRUISE

If you are looking for value for money split AC, Cruise can be the right fit.

Cruise ACs are among the cheapest branded ACs,

They are average in terms of power consumption. Looks great. Cooling performance is good.

Where Cruise ACs lack is the after sales service. The service centers appointed by the company are best in the industry. The service team at the local level is very supportive and very politely behaved

In terms of performance, Cruise air conditioners are known for their powerful cooling capabilities and quick cooling times, even in hot and humid climates. Additionally, many models come with inverter technology, which helps to save energy and reduce noise levels.

Overall, if you're looking for a reliable and high-performing air conditioner, a Cruise unit is definitely worth considering.

I have purchased Cruise AC with 5 star rating... Unit is working very quietly and makes a room quickly... I will provide for this brand 5 star for better performance....

We installed 3, 1.5ton split units and 2window units in the house, I am very particular about the installation process and was very satisfied with the installation.

I am a Marine engineer and hold in-depth knowledge of air conditioning plants, cooling of the Cruise air conditioning unit is phenomenal, even in the open space if we leave a door or two open it works flawlessly and cools to great tempereatures very quickly.Great product. I have replaced all the old units with cruise units , why spend more on expensive brands when you can get Excellent Ac from Cruise, Value for money. After service is good too. Customer service is good. Prompt response to any queries efficiently.

Nice air conditioning as far as compare to other existing company, nice support from all staff in regarding sales and service

I had purchased the 1.5 Ton a year back based on the recommendation by a friend of mine, post the installation I got praises from my family members too that the cooling is good and as Cruise is a brand which does not have much awareness in the Consumer market hence they inquired about the brand which I answered them and they also got inclined to try the same

Superb Ac and excellent service after sale. Air flow is very good and extreme cooling. Prompt service given by back end service team with in hour response. Aftet long time using this ac without any problem in ac. I will highly recommended to all my Contacts. Worth to buy

Cruise: An air conditioning company blending cooling tech with luxury for 29 years

cruise has launched the varioqool convertible ac range with flusojet technology..

  • Updated Jul 01, 2022, 6:37 PM IST

Cruise has been awarded the ‘Most Promising Brand of the Year’ and ‘Young CEO of the Year’ by Silver Feather International.

This is the ultimate showcase of how Cruise has blended every aspect of luxury in cooling technology, from quality, silent performance, design, reliability and customer experience. Founded in 1992, the Cruise Group is an innovator and manufacturer of premium air conditioners from split, portable to heavy-duty commercial refrigeration units. The brand specialises in Jumbo cooling and commercial ACs, and the products are sold across retail stores in India.

It has launched many cooling innovations, like India’s 1st dual-throw Window AC with double the cooling capacity of standard units. By launching two new professional ranges of AeroStation Cassette ACs and TurboStation Tower ACs in 2003, they entered the banking, hospitality and healthcare industries. It also launched a portable air conditioner on wheels for the Bollywood and Tollywood industry back in 2005 that allowed stars to shoot comfortably outdoors for long hours. In 2009 the advanced AI inverter AC was launched. And now, in 2022, they are ready with their newest innovations - launching India’s widest Split air conditioners with FlusoJet 60ft Long turbo airflow for cooling within seconds. The range includes three models from 11 to 15 HP capacities.

Roshan Sirohia, Director of Cruise Appliances Pvt. Ltd., has been at the forefront of pushing the limits of design and quality to meet changing needs of customers ranging from celebrities, business personalities and homeowners. He adds, “Cruise was one of the first AC companies in India to introduce the use of nano-paint protection to increase AC life by 3x backed by a Lifetime warranty program to provide hassle-free ownership. We will always continue to innovate our services to stay ahead of the curve.”

Having specialized in air care technologies, Cruise ACs have an edge over the competition due to their belief in raising the bar for daily life with superior technology at affordable lifestyle costs. This promise is backed by an industry-leading ten-year warranty on compressors and robust engineering of every component to endure harsh coastal environment conditions. With deep sector expertise and ISO quality certified operations, worldwide HVAC enterprises and OEMs may expect 3x longer durability products. For Cruise, the focus has always been to provide premium air conditioning solutions that are reliable, affordable and packed with advanced technology, backed by strong customer support and The Air Expert signifies their contribution to evolving the aircon industry.

With cinemas, movies and OTT content taking centre stage again post lockdowns, Bollywood celebs continue to shoot for long hours to create mesmerising movies and shows for the audiences. But given our Indian summers which are known for being brutal with heat, sweat, and humidity, it can create extreme discomfort and hamper creativity for our superstars. This is where portable and split air conditioners from ‘Cruise’ have emerged as the leading choice for celebrity homes, on-set outdoor shoots and vanity vans as well.

Founded in 1992, Cruise Appliances’ core value has been to develop European quality and heavy-duty ACs to cater to the growing demand for comfort cooling in the Indian market. With this vision, the company had launched India’s 1st Portable AC in 0.75- and 1-Ton cooling capacities in 2005, ushering a new era of advanced AC products in the country. Following its launch, it instantly became the go-to air conditioning solution for Bollywood celebrities who have to work outdoors for long hours keeping their make-up, stunning costumes and comfort at its very best.

Today, the company produces a wide range of split, tower, and cassette air conditioners featuring the latest technologies such as a 7-step Air Purification Technology, Auto-clean function, Convertible Cooling for all-weather performance, Rust-O-Shield Blue Protection on heat exchangers for humid and corrosive environments, and an HD PM2.5 filter to remove up to 99% airborne bacteria. Their advanced cooling solutions promise better temperature control and improved air quality for a healthy living space.

Thanks to the convenience of the unique portable AC, Cruise is now a trusted cooling partner of several big Bollywood names. Cruise has been part of the lives of superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, and Madhuri Dixit. Yami Gautam, Elli AvrRam, Evelyn Sharma, Ishita Dutta, Shakti Arora, and Karan Tacker amongst other stars also have these ACs installed in their homes and vouch for their instant cooling performance. Popular TV star and dancer, Mouni Roy recently posted a photo of her new Cruise PortaQool AC admiring its cutting-edge features like 4-in-1 smart AC with an air conditioner, fan, dehumidifier and an air-purifier.

Recently, Cruise has been able to create a benchmark in the industry with its #BeautySleep campaign featuring creators like Ahsaas Channa, Kanchi Singh, Chetna Pandey, and Tanya Sharma among many others. The air condition company collaborated with celebrities like Sonal Chouhan and Sunny Leone who love Cruise’s products. Leveraging superior technology and engineering, the AC brand is committed to yielding industry-leading product design and development. Since its inception, Cruise has been pushing the boundaries with innovation as well as breakthrough products. The company seems to be determined to do the same in the future.

Cruise takes pride in their close relationship with the Bollywood family who put their complete trust in Cruise’s air conditioning services. The credit of this trusted partnership goes to Cruise's PortaQool portable air conditioners and their VarioQool Inverter ACs which have been a robust cooling partner for the ever-changing lifestyle. And with its expanding distribution network across India, more people can now experience their innovative air-cooling solutions.

View star ratings and compare our top suggestions for AC brands in the table below.

Lennox

Pros and Cons

Carrier offers AC units with seasonal energy efficiency ratios (SEER) between 13 and 26.

Its most efficient and best-performing model is the Infinity 26 Air Conditioner with Greenspeed Intelligence. Each Carrier AC includes the option for a five- or 10-year limited warranty, depending on when you register the product.

  • SEER rating: Up to 26
  • Price range: $3,000–$15,000

Why We Chose Carrier

Carrier partners with Energy Star to meet strict energy efficiency requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This, combined with the company’s low sound ratings and variable speed compressors , results in some of the highest-performing AC units available. Carrier’s boilers and furnaces are equally high-performing.

Lennox

Like Carrier, Lennox partners with Energy Star to provide high-efficiency AC units. SEER ratings vary by model, but its SL28XCV unit can reach up to 28—one of the highest rates in the industry.

  • SEER rating: Up to 28
  • Price range: $3,100–$10,000

Why We Chose Lennox

Lennox’s high-end air conditioners feature technology that modifies how they cool based on the surrounding climate, leading to higher efficiency. You can also add the company’s SunSource technology to any of its Signature collection units, allowing you to power your AC by solar panels .

Founded in 1913, Trane offers impressive warranties that make it a secure investment. Its XV20i TruComfort Variable Speed air conditioner uses variable speed technology to continuously communicate with other air conditioning system parts and a Trane thermostat for optimal efficiency.

  • SEER rating: Up to 22
  • Price range: $3,500–$15,600

Why We Chose Trane

Trane includes a 12-year compressor and a 10-year parts and labor warranty, which is more comprehensive than other brands. These warranties help make your investment more secure and long-lasting.

Amana

Amana is part of Goodman, the world’s largest manufacturer of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning products and systems. It offers quality AC units backed by a solid warranty. It also features one of the most user-friendly websites, including easy-to-access user manuals and product search tools.

  • SEER rating: Up to 25
  • Price range: $3,600–$11,000

Why We Chose Amana

Though many of Amana’s products have average performance, their features boost your ability to control your home. The company’s ComfortBridge technology uses two-way communication to determine which speed or stage the AC runs on, rather than relying on your thermostat. This allows your HVAC system to use data to automatically adjust to the minimum amount of energy needed to heat or cool your home, lowering your utility costs. Amana also uses a variable-capacity compressor, which improves your humidity control.

5. American Standard

American Standard

American Standard has become a household name in air conditioning since its founding in 1929. The company offers budget-friendly AC units with 10-year limited warranties. It uses a network of certified dealers, so you can buy an American Standard AC with a representative that understands your region’s HVAC requirements.

  • Price range: $3,500–$10,900

Why We Chose American Standard

American Standard has many units to choose from, including options for single, two-stage and variable-speed fan motors depending on your budget and desired energy efficiency. The company also offers AccuLink and AccuComfort smart thermostats, which allow you to control your AC via American Standard’s mobile app. Best of all, the company has competitive prices.

York

York began in 1874 producing ice makers, then expanded into HVAC systems once the technology became available. Johnson Controls, which manufactures mechanical equipment globally, now owns the company. York’s AC units combine high energy efficiency and low sound levels. Every model has guardrails to protect the coil and compressor for additional durability.

  • SEER rating: Up to 21
  • Price range: $4,000–$10,000

Why We Chose York

York is the most experienced company on this list. Not only do you receive quality AC units, but also expertise other brands on this list don’t have yet.

7. Frigidaire

Frigidaire

Frigidaire has become a common household name over the last 100+ years due to its quality refrigerators and freezers. The company brings the same quality to its AC units. Though it’s known for simple, traditional ACs, it also offers a selection of smart-home integration features.

  • Price range: $500–$1,082

Why We Chose Frigidaire

Frigidaire offers built-in and portable air conditioners but stands out for its window-mounted ACs. Some options include technology typically reserved for large ACs, such as Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile app control, and inverters that optimize energy efficiency and air circulation.

Ruud

A part of the manufacturer Rheem, Ruud offers affordable full-size AC units. The company’s standard 16 SEER unit, the RA16 Achiever Series, starts as low as $3,000. Ruud’s high-end options, such as its UA20 Variable Speed Econet Enabled Ultra series, offer competitive pricing for smart-home integrated, high-efficiency units.

  • SEER rating: Up to 20.5
  • Price range: $3,000–$6,100

Why We Chose Ruud

In addition to low-cost units, Ruud offers financing options through an in-house financing firm, KwikComfort Financing , with options for zero-interest payment plans. This financing feature stands out given that AC replacement is expensive.

Goodman

Goodman began in 1975 manufacturing flexible air ducts, then expanded to air conditioners seven years later. Though known in the past for relatively standard AC units, its products have improved in quality and durability since Daikin Industries acquired the company in 2012.

  • SEER rating: Up to 24.5
  • Price range: $1,500–$8,000

Why We Chose Goodman

Goodman builds its ACs last, with features including special dirt-blocking filters and rail guards to protect the coils from weather and debris. Goodman backs its ACs with a 10-year limited warranty on parts, a 10-year limited warranty for entire unit replacement, and a lifetime compressor warranty.

Rheem

Rheem offers a variety of AC and HVAC units as well as plumbing products with a focus on smart – home integration. Its EcoNet products allow you to fully integrate your home’s heating and cooling systems to maximize comfort and savings.

  • Price range: $3,100–$6,100

Why We Chose Rheem

Rheem has a smartphone app that lets you control your entire system and receive notifications for maintenance or other issues. The company’s RA20 Variable Speed units are a standout, including EcoNet integration, higher SEER ratings, and eligibility for a $300 energy efficiency rebate. Products like this paired with the company’s app make it one of the best AC brands for smart homes.

What Factors Should You Consider When Choosing an Air Conditioner Brand?

Though cost is crucial when choosing an air conditioner brand, you should consider a few other factors, such as customer service and warranties, before deciding. We’ve listed the most significant factors below.

Your budget is vital in determining which AC brand is best for you. Premium brands cost more because they use newer technology and offer smart home capabilities. You can save money by opting for a standard AC unit if you don’t want or need these features.

The type of air conditioner influences its price, too. For example, a full-size central air conditioner costs more than a smaller option, such as a ductless air conditioning system, also called a split AC unit .

Below are some of the average costs of different AC system types. We’ve also included the costs of vital AC parts, such as a condenser . These are included in the unit cost but can increase or decrease the overall price.

Be aware that some brands, such as Trane, may use their name recognition and long history as a reason to charge higher prices. Though a good reputation is a strong indicator of quality, it doesn’t necessarily mean you should pay more for a comparable unit from a lesser-known brand.

You should also consider that installation costs are not included in the unit price. This costs $1,200–$2,200.

Warranties help secure your AC investment. Most companies offer a five-year limited warranty for parts but will commonly increase this to 10 years if you register their products online. We encourage you to register your AC unit with its brand to get the most out of your investment.

A 10-year limited warranty for parts or replacement is standard. A brand that offers a lifetime compressor warranty or lifetime replacement warranty signals the company stands by its products.

Air conditioning technology is continuously progressing. You can buy an AC with all the bells and whistles, such as an internet-accessed monitoring system and smart thermostat . However, more features mean a higher cost. Consider what features and convenience level you want and compare them with the brand’s price tags to find a middle ground.

Central air conditioning systems that merge your HVAC systems into one unit with a heat pump may cost more up-front. You can save money by opting for a split system, which separates your HVAC system into a furnace for heating and an air conditioner for cooling. However, unified systems with a heat pump are more efficient during summer and lead to lower energy bills, saving you money long-term.

Pay attention to how much customer support is available. A good AC brand should offer various forms of communication, such as an online submission form and direct phone line. Also, take note of whether the company provides certified installers, either in-house or through a network of dealers.

We recommend researching brands you’re interested in on popular customer review sites such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Reading customer reviews will give you insight into the installation process and what it’s like to deal with that brand’s customer service representatives.

An air conditioner’s life span can vary greatly depending on factors such as its quality, the work performed by the installing technician, your surrounding climate, and how well the system is maintained. The typical home air conditioning unit can last anywhere from 15–25 years. Here are some factors that can shorten your AC’s life span.

Your local climate determines how hard the AC has to work and how low it has to lower your home’s temperature. Hot temperatures mean the AC has to work extra hard to cool the house, which can reduce its life span. An extremely hot and lengthy summer can also reduce the AC’s life span. Learn the annual average temperature of where you live so that you can plan and budget for a new air conditioner accordingly.

cruise ac company reviews

Energy efficiency determines an air conditioner’s overall performance and value. Below are two of the most common ways an AC’s energy efficiency is determined.

  • ENERGY STAR ratings: A brand that partners with ENERGY STAR is another good indicator of quality. ENERGY STAR uses strict guidelines to certify AC units. For example, the unit must have a SEER rating of 14.5 or higher. It must also have an energy efficiency ratio (EER) rating—a more standardized measurement than SEER—that uses 8% less energy than conventional AC models.
  • SEER rating: Seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) ratings are the ratio of an AC’s cooling output over a typical cooling season divided by the energy it uses in watt-hours. A SEER rating is calculated over an entire cooling season using a constant indoor temperature and a variety of outdoor temperatures ranging from 60℉ to over 100℉. Be aware that a SEER rating is the maximum efficiency rating. Your unit’s efficiency could be lower depending on your home’s conditions, such as insulation and windows . Any SEER rating above 13 is considered good. The average rating is 16, and anything above 20 is top-of-the-line. Units below 13 are likely low-quality.

The best air conditioner brand depends on your budget, needs, and wants. Carrier air conditioners are some of the best-performing, while Lennox has one of the highest SEER ratings and best energy efficiency scores. Brands such as Trane or American Standard may be a better fit if you’re looking for something more affordable.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when shopping for air conditioners is not obtaining multiple quotes from HVAC contractors . We recommend getting at least three quotes from different brands to compare costs, warranties, and additional features.

Which AC brand is best?

The best AC brand depends on your specific needs and wants. However, we find Carrier to be one of the most well-rounded AC brands. The company offers competitive pricing on high-quality AC units and includes a 10-year limited warranty upon product registration.

How long do ACs last?

An AC unit can last up to 20 years, or even 30, with the proper maintenance and care.

What SEER rating do I need for 2,000 square feet?

A 2,000-square-foot home requires a 3.5-ton air conditioner. SEER ratings for air conditioners near this weight range from 13–25. A lower SEER-rated AC is typically less expensive, but your electricity bills will be higher than with a higher SEER-rated product.

Which AC brand is the cheapest?

We found Ruud to provide some of the cheapest full-size air conditioners.

How do I know what size air conditioner I need?

Various factors determine your required air conditioner size. We recommend hiring a professional to properly calculate the right AC size for your home. Information used to calculate your required AC size includes the following:

  • Number of people living in the home
  • Square footage
  • Regional climate
  • Existing ductwork
  • Heat contributions of appliances

Which brand is best for window ACs?

We find Frigidaire to be the best brand for window AC units. The company specializes in window-mounted AC units and includes high-end features such as Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile app remote control, and high-end inverters that optimize energy efficiency.

How do I choose an AC brand?

We recommend focusing on five critical factors when choosing an AC brand:

  • Efficiency: How effectively the air conditioner cools a space.
  • Life span: How long the AC can last with proper maintenance.
  • Noise level: How loud the AC gets in terms of decibels (db).
  • Reputation: The manufacturer’s reputation across review sites, such as Google Reviews and the Better Business Bureau (BBB). You can also check with the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institution to see if the company is registered with the trade organization.
  • Extra features: What smart-home features or connectivity the AC includes, if desired.

The This Old House Reviews Team is committed to providing comprehensive and unbiased reviews to our readers. This means earning your trust through transparent reviews and data to support our ratings and recommendations. Our rating system for HVAC providers is on a 100-point system based on seven factors:

  • System cost (20 points): We determine if the company’s cheapest option for a full-size AC or furnace starts below $3,100 or if it exists somewhere between $3,100 and $8,500. The cheaper the average price range, the more points a company receives.
  • Efficiency rating (20 points): We consider the company’s best available energy efficiency ratings, namely its highest Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency ( AFUE) ratings. The higher the rating, the higher the score.
  • Sound rating (10 points): We analyze a company’s lowest possible sound rating in decibels. Companies with lower sound ratings are rated higher.
  • Warranty options (10 points): We award the most points to companies with warranties beyond the average 10- and 5-year warranties. We deduct points from companies with warranties that cover three or fewer parts.
  • Energy Star certification (10 points): We award more points to companies with Energy Star-certified products.
  • Reputation (10 points) : We factor in how each company is scored on the Business Better Bureau (BBB). We deduct points for any alerts or pending lawsuits.
  • Customer service and resources (20): We consider each company’s available customer support and resources. This includes whether the company offers a user-friendly product search tool, FAQ section, pricing guides, online manuals, and a mobile app.

This board might be of some help http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=192

The board does not list Moscow but does list St. Petersburg and is for people cruising Northern Europe and the Baltics.

I imagine your best bet would be a river cruise. Check out Avalon, Viking etc.

Thanks just starting my search :-)

5,000+ Club

We've done some cruises that called at St Petersburg that offered a day's excursion to Moscow. It left VERY early in the AM, you flew, it was pricy, and folks said it was tiring. A day in Moscow is not enough to see and appreciate the city, and unless you've been to St Petersburg several times, you miss all there is to see there. Most folks who've done it that i've talked to would not recommend the Moscow excursion if you're taking a ocean liner cruise calling at St Petersburg, but you're on a river cruise whereby you get to spend 3 or 4 days in Moscow......yes.

paul929207

We took a river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. It was a six day cruise plus four days on either end. Still did not have enough time.

Keith1010

I would look at a river cruise as well.

You mention northern Europe so I assume you are interested in a sea cruise which would be on the Baltic Sea. Moscow is far inland, no sea cruises. As mentioned, excursions to Moscow are offered on the 2 day stops in St. Petersburg, but I wouldn't recommend it. I would suggest that a tour of Moscow would require a land visit or a river cruise. Both will require a visa which is waived for licensed tour group in St. Petersburg.

We just returned from a Vantage river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. We spent 3 day in a hotel in Moscow before getting on the ship. The story and pictures are on our website.

We are always happy to answer any questions.

Thanks everyone for your help. Thanks also to Steve and Kathy ! soo much information very helpful :)

Tiggertastic

river cruises or most of the cruises that go to st petersburg for 2 nights do an excursion upto moscow - they fly you up there and stay overnight and fly back

celebrity and NCL both did it when we did the baltics with them

There may be a difference in the shore cruises offered... and possibly the cheaper quotes may ask you to pay for shore cruises as an optional extra (but for most of the intermediate stops, everything you need to see is within walking distance of the ferry, anyway.... off-hand, I recall only one time we were herded onto buses... so the shore cruises may well be the ones in the two main cities before and after the river cruise).

We used a company called VODOHOD, and were very happy with the whole arrangement. Worried about total cost, we asked our agent (who was a local man in St Petersburg who knew all the companies and was able to negotiate the best value for money for us) if we could get a cheaper price by leaving out the shore excursions in Moscow and St Petersburg, thus shortening the nights on board to six (instead of the usual, which is either ten or eleven). We were very happy with the final quote, and all the shore excursions on the river, plus transport from the ferry to the centre of Moscow at cruise's end, were thrown in. I have no idea, of course, how Vodohod compares with other companies' prices, but I certainly can say that they were flexible and helpful and ready to accede to a reasonable request... and the cruise was great! So the answer to your question about whether it's a good way to see the country is.... definitely yes!

If you want to talk to a local agent with plenty of first-hand knowledge, contact Slava at [email protected] (he speaks English very well). He's honest, and he's had a bit of recent practice in money-saving for price-conscious tourists! (Our trip was in late May). He bagged us a couple of hotels at either end for what seemed to us very reasonable rates, also.

You asked about a good time to go; as far as I know, the river cruises operate only for a very short period of the year, in summer, from about mid-April. During that realtively-brief period of warm weather and friendly river conditions, the river is full of them, both ways.... Vodohod had several every day, and that's just one of several companies plying the route.

If you want to see a page about Vodohod, look at http://www.facebook.com/pages/VODOHOD-Russian-River-Cruises/302618992363?v=wall

Have a great time!

we booked our firsr river trip with just go russia and found them really helpful, and they took care of the visa for us. The shipping line was the russian orthodox shipping company,

hi Anne Thanks for your reply, it is good to hear from someone who has used Go Russia. I think I will book with them for next summer. Regards Anny

Everyone offers to sort out russian visas etc for you. Its really very very simple. Its all done online and then you send your passport away to get the visa sticker implanted. I looked at organised tours vs doing myself, I found the prices for organised tours horrendous. Just dont be scared of being an independent tourist in russia. Just because the alphabet is different, doesnt mean its a hassle. I have been told that the scenary on this river cruise is a bit bland. I am taking the overnight train to experience the kinky red arrow before it gets replaced with new trains. Its very easy to book your own russian holiday. Unless you like paying at least double I suggest booking your own holiday.

thanks kepinitreal. I have considered using the train it could be more interesting than the river cruise.

Thank you love travel 656. enjoy your trip.
