Shakira ’s U.S. debut was a pop culture event. Arriving in a blaze of pan pipes and charango, she hypnotized the “TRL” generation with “Whenever, Wherever.” The irresistible pop oddity, with its lyrics about humble breasts and strong legs, peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, laying the groundwork for her highly influential “Laundry Service” era. In retrospect, the video feels prophetic — particularly the opening scene, where Shakira emerges from the ocean like a mythical being. After all, “Whenever, Wherever” heralded the arrival of a global pop icon with almost otherworldly staying power.

With the 20th anniversary of “Laundry Service” on the horizon, the hitmaker is in a reflective mood. “I always knew I was going to try for a crossover,” the Colombian superstar, now 44, tells Variety . “My goal was for my music to be able to reach as many people as possible.” A rather large hurdle stood in her way: she needed to master a new language. “It was such a Herculean challenge,” she remembers. “When I think about [writing an album] with the amount of English I knew at the time, even I’m surprised at how fearless I was!

“I’m telling you, ignorance is bliss,” she continues. “If you don’t know how challenging it’s going to be, you’re not afraid. I dove in headfirst without thinking about it too much.” Shakira puts her bravery down to youth. “Being in your early 20s has its disadvantages; I was probably more insecure, in a lot of ways, compared to now,” the Super Bowl LIV headliner reflects. “It also has its advantages, like impulsivity, ambition and drive. I was introduced to rejection and failure very young, so I already had a thick skin.”

Crossing over changed the trajectory of her career. “‘Laundry Service’ was 100 percent a before-and-after moment,” Shakira says. “My life wouldn’t be remotely the same had I never taken that leap.” She also points out how the music industry has changed over the last two decades. “It’s true that now Spanish has become mainstream, but breaking through that barrier at the time was so important, not only for me as an individual but also [for] the culture I was representing.”

When asked if the challenge would have been easier today, she pauses. “It would have been nice to have the immediacy of social media back then,” Shakira says. “It’s done absolute wonders when it comes to reaching global audiences simultaneously. It has changed the whole musical landscape.” At the turn of the millennium, however, reaching a wider audience meant one thing — making music that top 40 radio would play.

By 2001, Shakira was already a huge star in the Spanish-speaking world thanks to chart-conquering albums like “¿Dónde Están los Ladrones?” and “Pies Descalzos.” The diminutive artist had more than enough clout to work with the hottest American producers, but rather opted to reunite with regular collaborators Luis Ochoa and Lester Mendez on her English-language debut. As for the lyrics? She wrote them herself with the assistance of rhyming dictionaries and her favorite works of poetry.

Instead of being lost in translation, Shakira’s vision became clearer. She concocted a mix of pop, rock and traditional Latin elements that didn’t so much rewrite the rulebook as destroy it. Take the traditional instruments that give “Whenever, Wherever” its trademark flavor. “In the lyrical content I mention scaling the Andes to go see my lover — pan pipes and the charango are a nod to creating that landscape as the backdrop for a song,” the Grammy winner explains.

There was another reason for including those instruments. “I also loved that it was a bold choice for the Anglo market — it wasn’t like other things on the radio,” Shakira says. “You might love or hate the sound, but either way you’ll remember it.” Recording the pan pipes is one of Shakira’s strongest memories from the “Laundry Service” sessions. “It took hours of dictating the melody,” she reveals. “When we finally got it, I was so happy. It turned out exactly as I heard it in my head.”

If pan pipes were foreign to U.S. audiences, belly-dancing — on top of mountains, no less — was positively alien. “I knew the hyperbole in ‘Whenever, Wherever’ would be ripe for fun visuals,” Shakira says. “That was my first intro to the American market and belly-dancing was not something anyone had ever taken to mainstream pop before. I knew at the time it was something special and different, but I don’t think even I could have imagined how much it ended up taking on a life of its own, even now so many years later.”

Revisiting “Laundry Service” is an emotional experience for the singer-songwriter. “This is one that will always be particularly special to me because it was such a vivid time in my life,” Shakira remembers. “My career was at a turning point and I was newly in love. Everything about that writing process was different because it was so new and I was very aware that I was at the beginning of a new era that was going to be really significant for me.”

Significant is something of an understatement. A breathtakingly ambitious collection of pop-rock anthems that placed tango-inflected tunes next to sparse, guitar-driven ballads, Shakira’s English-language debut was a worldwide phenomenon from the moment it arrived on November 13, 2001. “Laundry Service” would go on to sell 13 million copies worldwide and earn a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the “200 Definitive Albums of All Time.”

The album’s quality is partially due to the pop icon’s rigorous editing process. The “Laundry Service” sessions produced dozens of songs that were never released. “Every album has tracks that don’t make the cut; on an album that has 12 songs, I might have written 60,” Shakira says. “Editing down is a hugely important part of the creative process. I always try to do the exercise of writing as much as possible, before distilling it down to what I think is the absolute best of what I have. I wouldn’t want to do anything less.”

I mention my fondness for deep cuts like “Fool,” “Ready For The Good Times” and “Poem To A Horse,” which tickles her. “Really? I love hearing about which songs people connect to on an album besides the singles. The truth is, the B-sides are often my favorites,” Shakira says. “They’re usually the songs that were written with the most creative freedom and every now and then it’s nice to revisit them. I’m truthfully just as proud of them.”

After writing and recording the songs, Shakira still needed an album title. Ultimately, she went with “Laundry Service” because it evoked the feeling of renewal. “The title was inspired by that fresh clean feeling you have when you newly fall in love again — you have a clean slate, and everything is fresh and new,” she reveals. “It’s such a warm and cozy feeling.” It’s a testament to her talent that the album still sounds as inviting as it did in 2001.

In the two decades that have passed since the arrival of “Laundry Service,” Shakira’s star has never waned. She thrived in the physical and digital eras, and is still going strong in the age of streaming. What advice would Colombia’s greatest pop export give herself if she could go back in time to 2001? “I’d tell her to try to enjoy the ride a little more,” she ponders. “I did know at the time something special was happening and it was an amazing moment in my life but I was still so focused on what to conquer next — I definitely could have soaked it in a bit more.”

In her defense, it’s hard to enjoy the moment when you’re in the middle of an era that would become the blueprint of pop crossover. The fact that it hasn’t been replicated with similar success since underlines the magnitude of the achievement. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Laundry Service,” Shakira is releasing an expanded digital edition dubbed “Washed and Dried.” The album contains four bonus tracks including a live version of “Whenever, Wherever” recorded at the Super Bowl. The album is finally being issued on vinyl, as well, on Dec. 17.

Shakira performs in 2002

Shakira ‘s Laundry Service was a game-changer. The Colombian star’s first bilingual (Spanish and English) album not only became her best-selling set, but it also took her career to another level.

Going from Latin America’s sweetheart to a global pop star sensation, Laundry Service debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 (Dec. 1, 2001 chart), and it gave Shak her first hits on the Billboard Hot 100: “Whenever, Wherever” peaked at No. 6, “Underneath Your Clothes” peaked at No. 9 and “Objection (Tango)” landed on No. 55.

See latest videos, charts and news

The special album also came with an image change for the singer/songwriter. Ditching her black hair and “good girl” look, Shakira debuted her golden blonde locks, which came with a bad-ass alter ego to pair perfectly with her anthems declaring independence from toxic relationships.

Shakira's 10 Most Memorable Collabs: Beyonce, Pitbull, Rihanna & More

In honor of the album’s 20th anniversary, below are five of its best girl-power tracks:

“Objection (Tango)”

Shakira isn’t anyone’s second option, FYI. The title itself already tells you that the she’s putting her foot down and objecting to getting involved in a love triangle. “Got dizzy dancing tango,” she sings in the album’s opening track.

“Te dejo Madrid”

Looking for a fresh new start? This song is all about putting yourself first before any coward that doesn’t appreciate you. “I don’t want cowards that will make me suffer, I’d rather say goodbye.”

“Ready for the Good Times”

The title says it all. After being heartbroken and singing the “saddest songs,” Shakira is ready to move on.

“Poem to a Horse”

It’s Shakira’s version of saying “Boy, bye.” In the emotional track, she sings: “Nice to meet you but I gotta go my way … I’ll leave again ’cause I’ve been waiting in vain.”

“ Rules”

Before getting into any boy drama, this time around Shakira is laying down the rules before linking up with someone in the first place.

Laundry Service ( Servicio de Lavandería ) is the fifth studio album and first English-language album by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira , globally released on 13 November 2001 by Epic Records . After her fourth studio album Dónde Están los Ladrones? became a success in Latin America, Spain, Middle East and the Latin community in the United States, Shakira was encouraged by American singer Gloria Estefan to record songs in English as she believed her friend had the potential to crossover into the English-language pop market. Shakira was hesitant at first, but then decided to learn English well enough to write songs in the language. The title of the album reflects Shakira's views on love and music. It was released as Servicio de Lavandería in Hispanic regions in January 2002. Laundry Service is primarily a pop rock [1] record but it also experiments with Andean music , dance-pop , Middle Eastern music , rock and roll and tango music . The album's theme is love and romance. Every song on it was written and produced by Shakira under the guidance of Emilio Estefan. [2]

Six singles were released from the album. The lead single " Whenever, Wherever " became an international success, reaching number one on record charts of Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The second English-language single " Underneath Your Clothes " repeated that success, topping the charts of Australia, Austria, and Belgium. Both singles charted in the top ten in the United Kingdom and United States. Spanish-language singles " Te Dejo Madrid " and " Que Me Quedes Tú " performed well in Hispanic regions, becoming hits in Spain and on the Latin record charts in the United States, respectively. The fourth single " Objection (Tango) " became a top ten hit in most countries around the world, while the sixth and final single " The One " was a moderate commercial success. To promote the album, Shakira embarked on her Tour of the Mongoose between 2002 and 2003. It was her first major worldwide tour and visited many countries and cities.

Laundry Service received favourable to mixed reviews from music critics. Many critics complimented Shakira's varied musical styles and originality, while some critics argued that the album sounded too generic. Shakira's vocal talent also attracted praise. Laundry Service topped the charts of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada and Switzerland, while reaching the top five in Argentina, France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. In the United States, Laundry Service peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. The album received multiple record certifications , including sextuple platinum in Australia, quintuple in Canada, Spain and Switzerland. It was also certified multi-platinum in the United Kingdom and the United States, proving to be a successful crossover for Shakira. Globally, Laundry Service was the seventh best-selling album in 2002. The album sold around 13 million copies by 2011, [3] making it one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century .

The album is listed at number 172 of the "Definitive 200" by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . [4]

Recordings for the project took place August 2000 - May 2001

After the success of the ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? and MTV Unplugged albums, Shakira decided to begin working on a crossover album to break into the English market in 2000.

Laundry Service was originally designed to include older songs by advice of Gloria Estefan , the wife of the executive producer of the album Emilio Estefan, Jr. . However, Shakira later decided against using translations of older songs for the album and worked for over a year on new material for the album. The album was mainly produced by Shakira herself, Tim Mitchell and Lester Mendez who produced a bulk of tracks on the album. Shakira recorded the album in Miami , Florida and Nassau , Bahamas at the Compass Point Studios .

She worked with several other notable producers, including Glen Ballard and Luis F. Ochoa, and brought in noted audio engineer Terry Manning to record the album. Laundry Service has yielded eight singles: " Whenever, Wherever ", " Suerte ( Whenever, Wherever )", " Te Dejo Madrid ", " Underneath Your Clothes ", " Objection (Tango) ", " Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango) ", " The One ", and " Que Me Quedes Tú ". " Fool " was released as a single only in Brazil , and " Poem To A Horse " which was released as the promo-single from her 2004 tour album Live & Off the Record . "Eyes Like Yours" has an unreleased music video that was filmed around the same time as " Ojos Asi ". A clip of this unseen video was released on a promotional CD-ROM , only a minute in length and containing very few shots of Shakira singing in English. It is believed the song itself was recorded around the time of ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? when Shakira was still considering English translations of older songs instead of new material.

Shakira Says 'Laundry Service' Is a 'Testament' to Her 'Commitment to Music' and a 'Golden Era'

Shakira celebrated the 20th anniversary of Laundry Service on Friday

shakira laundry service tour

"Whenever, Wherever" is good to celebrate the icon!

Shakira celebrated the 20th anniversary of her 2001 breakthrough album Laundry Service on Friday. In a PEOPLE exclusive clip, the "Hips Don't Lie" singer, 44, calls the release of the album the "golden era" of her life — and she's releasing an expanded edition to commemorate it!

" Laundry Service was a testament to the fact that I was able to do anything. That my commitment was so huge," Shakira says in the clip. "My commitment to music and to my own dreams. Nothing was going to be an obstacle, not even myself."

Laundry Service (Washed and Dried) is the expanded edition for her album which features four new tracks — including the remix of "Whenever, Wherever" from Shakira's 2020 Super Bowl halftime performance .

The three additional bonus tracks are "Whenever, Wherever" (Sahara remix), "Underneath Your Clothes" (acoustic version) and "Objection (Tango)" (Afro-punk version). Recordings from Shakira's performance at her album release party in 2001 are also now available on YouTube.

Laundry Service was the icon's first English language album — something she says was a "huge challenge" at the time. However, she notes that it was equally "exhilarating" and "scary" to push herself into "new territories."

During the clip, Shakira also says that performing "Whenever, Wherever" at the Super Bowl was a "full circle" moment for her. Following her historic performance with Jennifer Lopez as the first two Latina women to co-headline the show — her hit single, along with "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" topped musical charts.

Last week, Shakira opened up during an interview with Glamour UK about the time she and her 8-year-old son were attacked in a Barcelona park by a pair of boars — an incident she says happened completely out of the blue.

"It's just crazy! I was taking my son, Milan, for a walk in the park and I got him a little ice cream," she recalled . "We sat on one of those park benches and we were just minding our own business. And then two huge wild boars came from the back and ambushed [us] and took my purse!"

The singer said she began yelling as the boars made off with her belongings, but despite her cries, no one else in the park stepped in to offer a helping hand.

"I was like, 'Oh my God! Oh my God!' and screaming, because they were taking it away, with my phone in it, my car keys, everything," she said. "Like they could understand me! And people were just watching and they weren't doing anything!"

Pop/R&B

February 2, 2020

In early 2001, Shakira was holed up on a farm in Uruguay, surrounded by her close family and a herd of cows. She’d just spent the last three years touring and performing across Latin America, establishing herself as a pop goddess with a rockera edge. Now she was convalescing in a quieter place, trying to write an album for an English-speaking audience that would somehow preserve the spirit of her trenchant pop-rock—all without forsaking the legion of Latin American fans that made her a pop luminary. It seemed to be an impossible task.

Over the next year, Shakira would confront this challenge head-on, embracing the totality of transition. The video for “ Underneath Your Clothes ” was the Colombian singer’s self-aware introduction to Anglo audiences. In the opening scene, a thirsty journalist chases after her through the Palace Theater in Los Angeles, her newly blonde—but still tousled—braids silhouetted under an oversized Brixton cap. He asks, “Shakira, Shakira: What’s it like to crossover and sing in English?” The rockera launches into a breathless monologue in Spanish about music’s ability to create a spiritual connection between spectators and performers, about the poetry of music beyond the artificial borders of language. As she walks away, the reporter begs, “Oh, but in English!”

It’s unlikely that such a calculated, performative exchange would appear in a Latinx artist’s English-language debut today. But back then, industry conventions dictated that Shakira be explicit in her approach. As she told MTV’s Making the Video, “I wanted that scene so badly in the video, because it’s something that is daily bread in my life lately.” Today, listeners around the globe are a bit smarter, less receptive to such overt maneuvers when artists are navigating new audiences. But we have only begun to challenge these stale tropes—and question the fantasy of “boom” narratives, where Latinx artists appear and disappear every few years based on their legibility to Anglo audiences.

That clear-eyed intentionality at the beginning of “Underneath Your Clothes” was the crux for her metamorphosis into an international supernova. Long before the Beyoncé collaboration , the World Cup anthem , and the forays into watered-down reggaetón, Shakira Mebarak Ripoll proudly used her versatility in her favor. As she told Colombian daily El Tiempo in 2001, “Fusion offers me the opportunity to remove any type of label people want to place on me. It gives me freedom...I don’t want to be tied to a specific style and become the architect of my own prison.”

She’d learned those lessons the hard way. Her first two albums, recorded as a young teenager and released only in Colombia, were comprised of lackluster, forgettable pop ballads. The records flopped, the former selling less than a thousand copies. At 15, Shaki moved from her hometown of Barranquilla to the capital of Bogotá, enduring an ill-fated stint on a telenovela. While her acting career didn’t pan out, she immersed herself in a wide range of U.S. and British rock styles, like the Cure , Led Zeppelin , and Aerosmith , all while maintaining her childhood love for belly dancing, a product of her Lebanese roots. In 1994, it seemed she’d finally found her calling. She recorded the original song “ ¿Dónde Estás Corazón? ?” for the Colombian rock compilation Nuestro Rock ; the track’s success led her original record label Sony to allow her to write an entire rock album, which would become Pies Descalzos , released in 1995, followed by ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones? in 1998. Pies Descalzos sold nearly 4 million copies worldwide, while ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones? went multi-platinum. Both records spawned international tours and hit singles, securing Shakira’s future as a Latin American pop diva.

The albums also served as harbingers of the mutability of Shakira’s pop identity. On ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones? executive-produced by her then-manager Emilio Estefan, Shakira smashed up mariachi horns and traditional doumbek drums, developing a reputation as the irreverent leader of Latin American rockeras , one who paraded her trumpeting yodel over songs about heartbreak and allusions to government corruption. Through intimate, rhapsodic lyrics, Shakira captured the attention of clever sadgirls across Latin America and its diaspora. But it was only a matter of time until she’d have to accommodate two legions of fans—one that worshipped her for her candid, political introspection, and another that demanded she conform.

After the release of a Grammy-winning MTV Unplugged album in 2000, Shakira was ready for something new. In early 2000, Freddy DeMann, the force behind Madonna and Michael Jackson ’s careers, took over her management. Sony suggested she recruit Gloria Estefan—the pop powerhouse and wife of her ex-manager—to translate the lyrics of ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones? into an English album for her U.S. debut. All of these maneuvers fell squarely into the pop crossover formula of the early 2000s: appoint a well-known manager in the Anglo world, hire the Estefans to be involved somehow, and record English versions of already wildly popular songs.

But after some tutoring, Shaki grew more comfortable with English, and she called off the translated version of ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones? to write a brand new collection of songs instead. Though she knew how to speak conversational English, Shakira wanted to cultivate a more literary approach to composition, so she studied the work of Walt Whitman and Leonard Cohen . She spent a year writing at the farm in Uruguay, as well as a rented house in the Bahamas, creating new material that would eventually make its way to Laundry Service .

In the fall of 2001, the album finally saw the light of day. Opener “Objection” is a plea for the collapse of a love triangle, blending B-52’s guitar licks with Argentine tango’s bandoneón. The anti-drug hymn “Poem to a Horse” weaves a fervid horn section with riffs seemingly lifted from a Nirvana B-side. “Te Dejo Madrid” features a gnarly harmonica solo alongside Shakira’s trembling vibrato, which was once described as the “bleating of a goat” by her second-grade classmates. This brand of musical pastiche has garnered Shaki acclaim, but it’s also made her the target of satire. Tracks like “Ready for the Good Times” demonstrate the pitfalls of such collage—a feel-good hook like “I’m ready for the good times/Now that I’m not alone” isn’t enough to redeem the uninspired, disco-laced beat or the sticky chorus.

It is in her meditations on erotic power that Shakira excels. “The One,” “Fool,” and “Underneath Your Clothes” put her diaristic sensibilities on full display. She draws on her own romantic torment, crafting raw paeans to her lover, or heartfelt reflections on surrendering herself to intimacy. Through power ballads and post-grunge vengeance, Shakira empties her body, harnessing anguish and devotion and tracing a blueprint for so many young people’s journeys of femme self-discovery. And while many of these songs iterated on similar ideas, her inimitable warble threaded all of these musical endeavors together, often leaving an even greater imprint in English. Between these album cuts and her hits, Laundry Service is a formidable compendium of Shakira’s sonic and corporeal world.

But it was “Whenever, Wherever” that transformed Shaki. An ode to her then-partner Antonio de la Rúa, the son of the deposed Argentine president, “Whenever, Whenever” immortalized her capacity to appeal to pop and rock audiences alike. The song incorporated Andean instruments like the quena pan flute and charango strings into the pop world, foreshadowing her career as a perennial shapeshifter. The video seemed to air on a loop on MTV; in it, Shakira belly-danced in an earthy halter top, sporting blonde tresses and writhing in the mud—prompting all of us to replicate her moves in our own bedroom mirrors.

The Anglo press had no idea how to parse an artist like Shakira. They drew endless, flimsy comparisons to both Britney Spears and Alanis Morrissette, which confused even Shakira at the time. Her name—Arabic for “full of grace” or “full of gratitude”—produced tongue-in-cheek but abhorrent one-liners. “Shakira, not to be confused with Shaquille O’Neal, ‘Shock the Monkey’ or anything involving your moneymaker or the shaking thereof...” went one Rolling Stone piece; Entertainment Weekly claimed the album was “enough to incite another anti-WTO rally.”

Many publications were preoccupied with Shaki’s lyrical idiosyncrasies. Reviewers described her English-language lyrics as “imponderable,” “odd,” and “curious,” and were disapproving of her eccentric “non sequiturs” and “lyrical clunkers.” Of particular frustration among critics was the couplet, “Lucky that my breasts are small and humble/So you don’t confuse them with mountains” from “Whenever, Wherever.” A 2001 Rolling Stone review stated she sounded “downright silly” in English, claiming that her magic was “lost in translation.”

In the late ’90s and early ’00s, when the careers of artists like Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, and Marc Anthony were in full bloom, it was difficult for Anglo critics to decipher the differences between Latin Americans and U.S.-born Latinos, who grew up speaking and writing in English. Today, this obsessive focus on language feels archaic and embarrassing; the internet has since expanded the boundaries of musical consumption and helped to erode long-held myths around language barriers. But the album’s mixed reception is evocative of the pressures Latinx artists faced 20 years ago. As one reviewer from The Guardian observed , it falls on critics to open themselves up to the lyrical sensibilities of Spanish: “Ripoll is not struggling with the intricacies of English, just expressing herself in a singular and puzzling way. Good for her.” Shaki seemed in on the joke, too; in 2001, she told El Tiempo , “Sometimes I say typical phrases in Spanish in English-language songs, and for Americans, that proves novel and interesting. That makes the process entertaining.”

Despite some lukewarm critical reception, the album fared well commercially, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. But it also introduced a deeply racialized debate around Shakira’s malleability and authenticity in the pop industry, one that captured tensions and conflicting desires between Latinx, Latin American, and Anglo audiences.

Among her diehard Latin American fans, Laundry Service had its share of detractors. Many labeled her a sellout, claiming her newly blonde hair, transition to English, and new look meant she was abandoning her essence as an incisive rockera and transforming into a whiter, sexier version of herself, one palatable for Anglo audiences. A 2001 story on Shakira for the Los Angeles Times cited a message board in which a fan wrote, “She’s got to dye her hair blond and bare her body—which she said a decent woman would never do—just to succeed in the United States. She doesn’t care about what we’re going through. She just cares about conquering the Anglo market.”

At the time, Shakira dismissed the criticism, telling the Post , “Maybe people think I dyed my hair blond to meet a certain requirement of the Anglo market, but I didn’t. The first time I dyed it, I dyed it red. I just like to go to extremes.” But for the Shaki devotees, Latin America’s pop queen was no longer for the people—she was transforming into somebody else, for somebody else. Like many young women in the music industry before her, Shakira faced constant sexualization and exotification. Anglo audiences no doubt drooled at the sight of a writhing woman with an accent in the “Wherever, Whenever” video. But, as cultural critic Pier Dominguez notes, some have argued Shakira exploited these tropicalizing tropes of Latinas, buying into collective fantasies for greater visibility, even as she put her musical eclecticism on display.

These kinds of authenticity debates are inscribed in the very fabric of pop music (think Madonna and voguing, or Miley Cyrus and twerking, or countless other stars). For decades, white U.S. artists have mined black aesthetics for “creative inspiration,” obstructing their originators from the credit and visibility they deserve. Shakira may have been using the structures of white U.S. pop against itself, but that is hardly subversive—her identity as a white, blonde Latina facilitated her explosive entry into the English-language market. Her whiteness allowed her to play off and against these tropes, particularly through the mediums of movement and dance, furthering her ascent to the upper echelons of pop, where black and brown Latinas were denied access.

Still, Laundry Service helped forge a path for other Latina stars to follow—releasing a mainstream pop album with both Spanish and English-language tracks no longer seemed unthinkable. It also laid the groundwork for Shakira’s legacy as a pop chameleon; every new reinvention, whether it was the electro-pop ditties of She Wolf , the merengue-rock thumpers of Sale El Sol , or the soca-tinged “Waka Waka,” can be traced back to the hybrid vision initiated on Laundry Service .

In 2020, as conversations about equity and representation seep into new pop cultural spheres, listeners might interpret this kind of musical tourism as appropriation. Crossover stories like Shakira’s seem like a relic of the past, a transparent marketing tactic laid bare by the music industry’s ceaseless grind. Even though we exist in an increasingly globalized landscape, we’re still consumed by the same feel-good narratives of cross-cultural exchange, where the mainstream success of a Latinx artist is lauded as an antidote to political and social oppression. Look no further than the collective reception of “Despacito,” which many celebrated as a salve for Latinx communities (excuse me while my eyes roll into the back of my head) in our endlessly xenophobic political climate. Laundry Service exhorts us to rethink the utility of the crossover narrative—who it is designed for and who it liberates, if anyone.
