Travel Techies presents to you some of the best hidden spots in Trivandrum city or the lesser known best places to visit in Thiruvananthapuram.
WATER FALLS
There are several waterfalls in Trivandrum. All of them are located along the hills of the north east.
Nature can be a very unforgiving place, and you need some specialized equipment and clothing to help you cope with most of the things Nature can throw at you.
General Checklist
- Always carry leech repellents as you may encounter them out in the wilderness.
- Day hiking shoes/boots The key feature of these shoes (and not just any ordinary sneakers or sandals) are that their bottoms have grip. This will allow you to more confidently tackle slippery or steep terrain.
- Daypack These are good to store essentials for short term day hiking. Some are equipped with bladders for hands-free hydration while others have side pockets to hold water bottles easily within reach. The ones I like tend to have a few more pockets to store things like maps, guidebooks, flashlights, tick removers, journal, and even trail food. Some also have hip belts for a little transfer of weight to the hips though they’re not as effective as those with frames.
- Handheld GPS These are good for trip logging but they can also be valuable when combined with a Topo map for any cross-country hiking or confirmation that you’re on the right path or you’re lost.
- Hat This may be stating the obvious, but sunburn and the hidden risk of skin cancer from overexposure to the sun can’t be underestimated. Generally the broader the brim, the greater the coverage which might include the neck.
- Light wool socks Not only are they good cold weather insulation, but even when your feet sweat, their moisture wicking properties reduce the likelihood that you’ll have blisters.
- Compact flashlight You can never underestimate situations where your excursion lasted longer than you thought, even when the day turns to night and you can’t see a thing. That’s where these can come in handy to at least give you some sense of where you’re going. If you want to go hands-free then a headlamp may be the way to go.
- Water bottle This is obvious, but if you really want to be eco-conscious than having your own reusable water bottle is the way to go.
- Medical Kit You never know when you suffer a cut, a twisted ankle, a really annoying insect bite, a tick bite, or even things like a gash or bloody nose to name a few things.
- Sunscreen If you can’t cover yourself up with clothing and protect yourself from the sun the old fashioned way, you could also apply SPF 30+ to ensure protection from harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. Just be warned however that there are side effects from some of the more popular brands while the more organic ones tend to not lost as long. It’s a tradeoff you’ll have to weigh in the name of UV protection.
- Sunglasses Cataracts (an eye ailment) is something that creeps up on you when you get older. You can decrease your chances of this with a decent pair of sunglasses. Some even feature polarization to cut some of the glare and make your vision even more contrasted than with just your own bare eyes.
- Hand Sanitizer These can come in handy when you have no clean water to wash your hands with (you especially have to watch out for bacteria in rivers and streams). They can help you clean off dirt, residue from Nature calls, residual insect repellant or sunscreen, or other things you probably wouldn’t want to put in your mouth, nose, or eyes.
- Meenmutty Waterfalls
Trivandrum has its own Meenmutty waterfalls (not to be confused with its namesake in Wayanad). The fall is located around 50 km from Trivandrum city, near the Neyyar reservoir area.
If you are ready to trek a few kms through the forest, Meenumutty (also Meenmutti) is the first in line to enjoy.
Strewn with large boulders, Kallar river bed adds to the wild beauty of the forest. Meenmutty is a multi tiered cascade, spectacular and serene.
Distances: Trivandrum – 46 kms Vithura – 9 kms
It is on the trek path to Agastyakoodam and the waterfall offers a unique experience.
- Approach the Ecotourism office at Kallar(between Vithura and Ponmudi) to get the pass issued.
- You may need a guide because the waterfall is a part of the forest.
- Though beautiful, during rains, the waterfall pools are too dangerous to access.
- The much anticipated water pool experience is not missed out as there is a bathing spot(bathing Ghat) at the start of the trek trail.
- Arriving at the medium sized fall requires a good amount of trekking for around 3-4 kms from the main road, as no transportation is available that would take you to the foot of the falls.
2. Vazhuvanthol waterfalls
Vazhvanthol waterfall is a great location for a treknic (trek + picnic). The waterfall trail is only about 2.2 kms, nevertheless expect to reach the cascade in an hour. You will be amazed how little this awesome place is known. Other than keen nature enthusiasts, not a lot of people venture to here.
Vazhvanthol waterfall is past Vithura in the north eastern part of Thiruvananthapuram district. Soon after Vithura is Theviyode junction. Take the deviation towards Bonacaud. Travel about 12 kms and you will reach the check post, where you have to take the entry pass. Vehicles travel a couple of kms from the check post.
Distances: Trivandrum – 53 kms Vithura – 16 kms
- There are rocks to tackle and undulating terrains to get through.
- Expect to be tired. The waterfall is such a refreshing presence that in a wink you will feel good again.
- No need to put yourself at risk at the slippery areas because there are several other equally good pools where you can enjoy the freshness of the mountain stream.
- Make sure to take food with you. No surprise if you feel very hungry after a treacherous trek. Again no surprise, if you feel to spend several hours here.
3. Bona falls
This is one of the least visited waterfalls in Trivandrum. Located deep within Agasthyarkoodam Biosphere Reserve, it is a treat to your eyes.

Unexploded shell from WWII found at tourist destination on Okinawa
The yellow circle shows the location of 110-pound unexploded shell from World War II discovered in Onna Village, Okinawa, March 12, 2024. (Onna Village)
ONNA VILLAGE, Okinawa — Japanese authorities on Thursday night planned to remove an unexploded, 110-pound shell recently discovered at a construction site in Onna Village.
A detail from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force was scheduled to remove the ordnance, believed to be left over from World War II.
The shell was discovered March 12 by a private contractor sweeping the site for magnetic signatures, a spokesman for Onna Village’s General Affairs Division told Stars and Stripes by phone Thursday.
Eight members of the 101st Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit were assigned to remove the shell, a spokesman for the Ground Self-Defense Force 15th Brigade said by phone Thursday. The unit will deactivate the bomb by removing its fuse.
Part of the Route 58 bypass will be closed during the operation, which was expected to start at 6:45 p.m. and last about two hours, the village spokesman said.
Onna Village is a popular resort destination where many prominent hotel chains occupy the shoreline. None of the hotels will be affected by the operation.
Approximately 10,000 tons of ordnance were dropped on Okinawa during the Battle of Okinawa and nearly 2,000 tons remain undiscovered, according to the prefecture’s General Bureau website. Crews disposed of 14.7 tons between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023.

New Chicago travel show promotes neighborhood-led tourism
The program by choose chicago reimagines neighborhoods as prime travel destinations beyond downtown..
Victor and Nancy Garcia, owners of Papa’s Cache Sabroso in Humboldt Park, show off family pictures to Rob Fojtik, host of Choose Chicago’s new travel show, “The 77: City of Neighborhoods,” which explores the city’s hidden gems and histories.
Choose Chicago
Can Chicago tourism be reimagined as more than city skyscrapers and deep dish pizza? Choose Chicago thinks so.
Its new travel show, “The 77: City of Neighborhoods” hopes to uplift neighborhoods as prime travel destinations in Chicago beyond downtown. The series was unveiled earlier this month as part of broader efforts by the city’s tourism marketing agency to support community-led neighborhood tourism.
Hosted by Rob Fojtik, vice president of neighborhood strategy at Choose Chicago, the series journeys through five distinct communities: Humboldt Park, Little Village, Uptown, Bronzeville and Pullman/Roseland.
“I think our neighborhoods really are a proof point that our diversity, our history — even if it’s challenging — has created this amazing, beautifully vibrant city where we have so many different cultures calling Chicago home,” Fojtik said.
Longtime community residents might recognize their favorite bites on the screen, from the jibarito at Papa’s Cache Sabroso in Humboldt Park to a vegan messab at Demera in Uptown or a handmade old-fashioned doughnut in Roseland.
Choose Chicago’s new travel show, “The 77: City of Neighborhoods,” features the city’s culinary staples, including the jibarito, which was created in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
Though food is a central component of each episode, aimed at increasing tourism and investment in the community, it is not the main objective of Choose’s Chicago’s marketing.
“If you get a million ads to come to the best restaurants in this neighborhood, but think that neighborhood has nothing going on, you’re not going to go there,” Fojtik said.
The goal is to shift the narrative of neighborhoods that have long been siloed through a “community-led” approach, Fojtik said.
Every episode includes a deep dive into that neighborhood’s history and culture as told by the people who live there.
“[Tourism] needs to be in the service of the folks who live there because otherwise you do see displacement [and] gentrification,” Fojtik said.
From community interviews with 26th Ward Ald. Jessie Fuentes, the Puerto Rican Cultural Center’s José E. López, urban historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas and many more, the series explores the city’s hidden culinary gems as well as hard truths, like disinvestment and gentrification.
Ambrocio Gonzalez, owner of La Catedral Cafe & Restaurant, discusses restaurant success in Little Village over coffee with Rob Fojtik, host of “The 77: City of Neighborhoods.”
Little Village resident Jennifer Aguilar , who participated in the series, agrees that storytelling is crucial to how a community is perceived. In her role as executive director of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce, Aguilar is tasked with promoting dozens of family-owned businesses in the 26th Street corridor, which has boasted the second-highest tax revenue in Chicago after the Magnificent Mile.
“It’s important to do a lot more storytelling to show people that, despite the violence, there’s also much bigger things [in the community],” Aguilar said.
With many of Little Village’s brick and mortar shops owned by Mexican and Latino community members, Aguilar hopes that increased tourism will stave off business closures and preserve the community’s cultural essence.
“Our target audience for tourists is other Mexicans in the Midwest and other Mexicans throughout the country … so they make the trip all the way over here to get their essentials and enjoy feeling like they’re in Mexico,” Aguilar said.
Aguilar’s clear that tourism should not come at the expense of displacing Little Village residents, which has been an ongoing issue in recent years.
“That’s why we were very intentional with talking about the possibility of gentrification and putting it in [the Little Village] episode,” Aguilar said, “so that whoever sees it and wants to come visit knows that it’s not an invitation for you to come live here.”
All 30-minute episodes of “The 77: City of Neighborhoods” are now available for viewing on YouTube and the Choose Chicago website, with upcoming community screenings in the next two weeks.

Bogong Village upgrade set to ease seasonal worker housing shortage this winter
The tranquil Bogong Village, nestled above a lake in Victoria's High Country, has seen better days.
Cobwebs hang. Paint peels. Nature creeps in.
But in just a few weeks, the village will embrace a new lease on life.
The cluster of simple wooden huts — built in the 1940s to house hundreds of workers constructing and operating the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme — has been given a thorough makeover after years of neglect.
It is a key player in Melbourne-based property company Grollo Group's move to plug a gaping housing hole in the alpine tourist market, which struggles every ski season to accommodate staff.
The company has spent $6 million renovating the village as part of a 73-year, sub-lease deal with AGL, which owns Bogong Village.
By May, Bogong Village will once-again boast an operating tavern, 27 refurbished cabins, and a place for 200 winter workers to call home for the season.
The village has mostly been gutted and renovated from scratch since last spring, but it's a task that Grollo Group property director Martin Ansell said would be worth the seven-decade investment.
"We first arrived and the possums pretty much ruled the place," he said.
"Basically, there's been no maintenance done on these properties for five to six years."
The site is already mostly booked out for this year's ski season by workers who will service the popular Falls Creek snowfields, including hospitality and lift staff, cleaners, and maintenance teams.
Another 100 beds could be available at Bogong Village in the near future under plans to build more housing at the site.
Mr Ansell said the project had support from nearby communities, such as the township of Mount Beauty, which struggled to meet housing demand for workers during the busy ski season.
"These businesses aren't maximising their ability to make their returns because they're restricted with the their ability to be able to get staff and house them," he said.
Bogong Village has a long history of housing staff, and reminders of its previous residents can still be found.
Footprints of the European migrant community that once called the site home are still evident in the established foreign gardens thriving in the thick eucalyptus forest.
Mr Ansell said it was important to give the village the fresh start it deserved, as Grollo Group looked to bring 1,500 new beds to market across Mount Buller, Bogong Village and Mt Hotham in the next three years.
"The whole community … are really positive now, it's just a matter of making the staff happy that they are living at Bogong," he said.
"We have got to make sure that we are doing it right this season, that the staff want to be here.
"We think, for the long term, it makes sense."
More than one village needed
Residents further down the mountain say it will take more than a single village to ease the region's housing stress.
Duane Gardiner, who owns The Park at Mount Beauty, said many local businesses sought staff accommodation at his caravan park, which was usually filled with tourists.
"People are willing to come to the area but there's no rentals, there's no blocks of land, so it's a really tough situation," Mr Gardiner said.
He is considering restructuring his park to include some staff accommodation.
"That's something we have been working on the last couple of years — providing a couple of cabins that we can offer for full-time and seasonal staff," he said.
He said it was crucial for governments to work together to help unlock more land for development.
Mansfield navigating housing squeeze
Mansfield, in the foothills of the Alps, is no stranger to housing stress, especially during winter.
To help uncover possible solutions, the Mansfield Shire Council has hosted a series of workshops involving landholders, banks, developers and planning teams.
It has also submitted nine applications to Regional Development Victoria for grants which could create up to 400 new housing options.
"The main challenge of keeping up with demand of an increasing population is to house our key workers," Mansfield Mayor Steve Rabie said.
The average rental price in the town is $540 per week, while the average home value is $845 000, pricing out many key workers.
"A lot of businesses are struggling to find key workers and have to close down their businesses during peak demand," he said.
Councillor Rabie said the shire was unable to manage the problem alone, and he was hoping that federal and state government representatives would join the workshops.
"It's going to take quite some time for them to come up with a solution," he said.
Solutions being examined
As one strategy to help with housing pressures, the Victorian government has introduced laws that allow a small secondary building, such as a granny flat, to be built on land without the need for a planning permit.
But not all residents can benefit.
Indigo Shire Council has received a steady stream of inquiries about the initiative, but warned many properties in rural areas would not meet the requirements of the new legislation, particularly in Indigo where there are a number of different property overlays.
"Towns like Beechworth and Yackandandah have lots of heritage overlays and, in those heritage overlays, you do need a planning permit for building and works, including for these small second dwellings," said Steven Hawkins from Indigo Shire Council's planning team.
The Victorian government said it had rolled out a raft of measures to help ease housing stress, including a $150 million Regional Worker Accommodation Fund announced last year.

‘This coast is saturated’: Italian village braces for post-Ripley crowds
Netflix hit series based on Patricia Highsmith novel brings prospect of surge in visitors to Atrani area of Amalfi coast
When Andrew Scott’s eponymous character in the hit new Netflix series Ripley travels from Naples to the village of Atrani, the rickety bus has the road almost to itself; a solitary Vespa passes going the other way. When he tracks down Dickie Greenleaf at the beach, the rich American and his girlfriend are the only people sunbathing on the pristine sands.
Visitors to the Amalfi coast today will note the contrast. Unlike in 1961, the road between Positano and Salerno is now known as much for its traffic jams as for the views. Atrani may be less busy than its neighbour Amalfi, but in summer its beach is taken over by rows of umbrellas and sunbeds. A small area, perhaps a fifth of the space, is public spiaggia libera .
In the village, which has one four-star hotel and a few B&Bs and holiday lets, some businesses are pleased about the Netflix exposure. Antonio Buonocore, who runs the beachside restaurant Le Arcate, said: “The impeccable photography has certainly brought our little village extra publicity.”
But others worry how sustainable this will be. Antonella Florio, of Maison Escher apartments, said: “This coast is saturated with overtourism. If more visitors come because of the series, I sincerely hope they come in low season.”
Luisa Criscolo, property manager at Chiara’s House, agreed: “If tourism does grow, the risk is that it’s not managed intelligently. Our village can’t cope with huge numbers of tourists. Cars, buses and motorbikes leave the traffic paralysed. The authorities need to keep a decent amount of places open longer so some visits can be channelled to other times of year, and must also encourage use of waterborne transport, and offer more frequent services on smaller buses.”
In Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 book The Talented Mr Ripley, Greenleaf is living in fictional Mongibello. The TV crew switched to Atrani after searching the coast for a location to suit their black-and-white period style (inspired by the 2018 illustrated book Neorealismo: The New Image in Italy 1932-1960 ). The series’ production designer, David Gropman, told Netflix he loved Atrani’s “incredible geography … the relationship of the main square to the beach, all of those unbelievable paths, that maze of stairs and corridors”. These all help make early episodes visually arresting. “Su, su, su [up, up, up],” says post office operator Matteo, directing Tom Ripley up to Greenleaf’s house.
That opulent villa, however, is not actually in Atrani, but on the nearby island of Capri. Villa Torricella was built in 1902 in eclectic style – turrets, Moorish colonnades, pointed arches and twisted columns – for an earlier pair of American socialites, Kate Perry and Saidee Wolcott, who hid their gay relationship by portraying themselves as sisters.
The villa, whose onion-domed tower is easily spotted from the ferry, is privately owned, but a one-bedroom apartment with panoramic terrace and the gorgeous tiled floors Johnny Flynn as Dickie is seen pacing around on, is for rent on Airbnb from £189 a night. There is still some summer availability, and plenty in autumn, though this may soon change.
After Ripley was released, Airbnb said it had seen a 93% increase in bookings to the Atrani area, which includes Ravello, a larger town a few miles north-east.
Canny beachgoers can avoid the crowds, though. The London-based musician Adam McCulloch visited last October, taking a bus to Positano – “the beach was rammed” – then a ferry to Amalfi. “We left the crowds behind and walked to Atrani over hills via Torre dello Ziro. Up there, you see no one. After steep steps down to the village, we had a swim, and a drink at Bar Nettuno, then walked the coast road back to Amalfi.”
The makers of Ripley closed the centre of Atrani for a month in October 2021 to take it back to the early 60s, paying local businesses for the disruption. (A year later the cameras descended again for filming of The Equalizer 3, also starring Dakota Fanning , who plays Dickie’s girlfriend, Marge.)
Later in the Netflix series, Ripley’s misdeeds take him to Naples, Rome, Palermo and Venice. In each city, writer-director Steven Zaillian uses paintings by Caravaggio to mirror the 20th-century con artist’s descent into violence, and perhaps his repressed sexuality.
But Rome and Venice are no strangers to film crews or mass tourism. Atrani, permanent population of about 800, is braced for change.
