Franklin, tx, where are we going.

Franklin Drive Thru Safari Tickets

About this activity.

Animals, animals and more animals!   Franklin Drive Thru Safari allows you to experience over 35 different types of animals, without having to leave your car!  That means, they can roam free in a more natural environment than the cages in a zoo, and you can watch them and learn from them safely from your vehicle!

There are the desert loving camels, the iconic Bison (you might even see babies if you are lucky!), beautifully colored peacocks, and the staple of Africa - the zebra, just to name a few!

For those kids who just can't wait to pat and touch the animals. there is a petting zoo they can do this in, which is a lot safer than touching the wild animals in the safari.  Here there are smaller animals, such as monkeys, that you can feed at a distance, but still have that great experience of interaction with them.

You might even get a deer to eat straight from the cup in your hand!  What a special moment that would be!

They aren't the only ones that have to eat, though, so you can bring a delicious picnic for lunch, and enjoy it as a family in one of their picnic areas.  After lunch if the little ones want to expel some of that energy from sitting in the car, there is a small play area where they can run, climb and slide all that energy out!

If you want to learn a little more about the animals, you can organize a guided tour with the friendly staff there who will educate you on the animals habitats, nature and fun facts about them.

They can also host parties there, so if you wanted to have a party with the animals just give them a call and see what you can do!

Say hi to the deer for us!

Just a short 35-minute drive away from the BCS area, visiting the small town of Brenham could very well be every kid’s (or adult’s) dream day-trip. For starters, Brenham is home to the Texas-beloved Blue Bell ice-cream . You and your kiddos can visit the factory where it all started and learn all about how this small Brenham company has become the best ice–cream manufacturer in the world (we might be slightly biased). Or you can skip the learning and go straight to the Ice Cream Parlor to try an abundance of flavors, all for $1 a scoop. After you’ve filled up on some sweet, creamy goodness, head over to Downtown Brenham ! Walk around, visit some cute antique shops, and grab lunch or coffee at one Brenham’s cute cafés or bakeries!  If the kids aren’t up for shopping, don’t worry, our favorite thing about a day-trip to Brenham is hands down Silver Wings Ballroom . Silver Wings is about 5 minutes from Downtown, and is the only roller rink in the Brazos Valley. Check out the summer specials on their website, and burn off those ice-cream calories by roller-blading the day away.

GOOD EATS: Downtown Brenham has a plethora of delicious restaurants and cafes. There really is something for every price range and palette! Here are a few of our favs:

Yumm! Sweets & Eats – Soups, salads, wings, sandwiches, and hand-made gourmet pizzas, there’s something for everyone at this cute downtown spot!

Funky Art Café : Coffee bar & and an elevated menu- if you’re looking for a scrumptious meal that won’t break the bank, this café is for you.  Not super hungry? Check out their amazing coffee selection and sweet treats!

Navasota is a short 25-minute drive from the Bryan/College Station area. There’s a whole lot more going on in this small Texas town than you think! Start your day trip off right and take your family to explore the Birth-Place of Texas, Washington-on-the-Brazos . The Washington-on-the-Brazos Historic Site is located right on the Brazos River, about 5 miles away from Navasota. Spend the day exploring the expansive park grounds, hiking the trails, and discovering Texas history! Let your kids experience the Barrington Living History Farm , where they can step into the sights, smells, and sounds of the 19th century. This living farm is complete with heritage breeds of livestock, interpreters dressed in period style clothing to help visitors better understand what life was like 150 years ago, and fun learning opportunities. You are encouraged to participate in the work of the farm and become a part of the exhibit. Learn how to drive oxen, help plant and harvest crops, and try your hand at spinning or making soap.

Afterward, head to Downtown Navasota for lunch, cute antique shopping, and fun weekend events put on by the City of Navasota! One event we love every year is their Sounds of Summer Concert Series! Concerts will take place on Fridays throughout the month of June (be sure and check the city’s website for more details).

GOOD EATS: When in Navasota, a pit-stop at the Classic Rock Coffee Company is a must. Honestly, sometimes I drive from College Station just for their Chai Latte, and it’s worth it every time. Martha’s Bloomers is a great place to stop either on your way to Navasota or on your way back. They have a delicious brunch-style menu, beautiful gardens to explore, and an adorable gift/garden shop.

Hockley, TX: Take a trip to the closest drive-in theater around!

Just one hour south of College Station, a drive-in movie theater adventure awaits you and your family! The Showboat Drive-In Theater is open every weekend and plays the hottest films in the box-office. Enjoy two feature films for one low price with every visit, from the comfort of your own car! Let the kiddos to burn off the pent up energy from the car ride over at the Showboat’s outdoor playground as mom and dad get settled with burgers and fries from the Snack Bar.  Once the sun sets, the magic begins. Enjoy a movie experience like no other beneath the stars, while snacking on popcorn and hot cocoa. Check the Showboat’s website for current movie screenings!

Good Eats: If you make it out early and want to grab dinner before heading to the drive-in, stop by The Backdoor Pizza-N-More ! New York Style pizza, calzones, freshly made cheesecake, sandwiches, salads, and pastas; there is something on the menu to satiate every appetite.

franklin safari college station

About 25 minutes from the familiar streets of College Station, families can find a sweet escape at Lake Bryan . Come out for a day of fishing, grilling, swimming, boating, and much-needed relaxing. The lake has 125 acres dedicated to year-round camping as well as 16 miles of mountain bike trails. A day pass is only $5 per vehicle. You could even schedule your next family reunion at their pavilion using the scheduling feature at their website, lakebryan.com

GOOD EATS: During the Texas summer, there’s really nothing that hits the spot after a long day at the lake like Mexican food. Casa Rodriguez in Downtown Bryan is a local favorite, and it’s only a 10-minute drive from Lake Bryan. Don’t leave without trying their Queso Flameado or Tres Leches! P.S. Breakfast is served all day.

If you've ever wanted to own a zoo, this is your chance. A drive-thru safari in Texas just hit the market and yes, the animals are included!

The Franklin Drive Thru Safari in Robertson County is on the market, MySanAntonio reports, citing a listing from Texas Ranch Sale LLC's Keith Payne . "This is an extremely rare and unique opportunity to own an established and profitable drive thru safari and wildlife park that has been in business for over 10+ years. The property is as turnkey as they come with highway frontage, ample guest accommodations, all improvements already in place, and numerous native and exotic species," the listing states.

The drive-thru safari sits on 240 acres of land just 45 minutes from College Station. The sale includes a 5,000-square-foot main home that has 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, two living areas, an office and a game room. There's also a pool, hot tub, bar and outdoor kitchen. Don't forget the 3,200-square-foot guest house with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The property also has seven two-bedroom, one-bathroom cabins that you can rent out to guests.

Let's talk animals. Bird houses, a reptile house, a hay barn, a deer and exotic barn and catch pens are also found throughout the property. There's over 100 species of animals that live here.

If you don't want everything, you can purchase just parts of the property. The listing states the following options:

  • Purchase all 240+ acres
  • Purchase just the drive-thru safari
  • Purchase just the property in the back (includes main house)

New York City subway system reeling after 3 violent attacks on Monday

By Ali Bauman , Jesse Zanger

Updated on: March 25, 2024 / 11:26 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK  --  Police say a man was pushed in front of a 4 train in Harlem and killed, one of three violent crimes in the subway system on Monday.

Hours earlier, a 52-year-old man was stabbed in the neck on the J train at the Kosciuszko Street station and a 21-year-old woman was stabbed near turnstiles at the Franklin Avenue station.

All of it happened  on the same day the NYPD said it had a plan to make the rails safer by cracking down on fare evaders .

But some say this tactic could target commuters of color.

"The trains are crazy these days," commuter Prince Woodard said.

Transit crime is up 4% so far this year compared to last, and up 8% compared to 14 years ago.

"The tone of law and order starts at the turnstiles," NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper said.

Earlier Monday,  the NYPD announced a week-long push to crack down on fare evasion in the subway , deploying an additional 800 officers to the transit system to stop people from jumping the turnstiles.

"Who jump the turnstile? I don't think that's the real problem," commuter Esther Medina said.

"To have cops visible will help," another person said.

"I think it's another reiteration of 'broken windows' policing which we saw was a failed model of addressing criminality," commuter Indira Martinez added. "I don't think going after folks who don't have the $2.75 for a subway fare is doing anything to address the real issues plaguing our city."

The NYPD says of the 20 people it arrested for gun possession in the subway system so far this year, 11 were people police stopped from going through the turnstiles.

"Fare evasion enforcement and turnstile presence is a key component to our crime-reduction strategy," Kemper said.

Last year, the NYPD issued more than 124,000 civil summonses and more than 1,300 criminal summonses for fare evasion, its highest number of fare-evasion tickets in at least five years.

"It's clear the NYPD has shifted their focus to this low-level enforcement in their practices, but these racial disparities have continued and they've worsened, actually," said Anna Stenkamp, research associate at John Jay College's Data Collaborative for Justice.

A new report from John Jay College of Criminal Justice found over the last two years, 85% of all criminal summonses in New York City were issued to Black and Hispanic people who combined make up just 52% of the city's population.

"Black and brown people are overly burdened with the stops and interactions with the NYPD, so I wouldn't expect fare evasion to be any different," Stenkamp said.

The NYPD says it plans to continue fare-evasion crackdowns in the weeks ahead.

Anyone with any information on the three underground crimes on Monday is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) , or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782 ). You can also submit a tip  via their website  or via DM on Twitter,  @NYPDTips . All calls are kept confidential.

See what the solar eclipse will look like in your city

April 8 may be your best chance to see a total solar eclipse for two decades.

Scroll to continue

If you could look down on Earth from space during April’s total solar eclipse, you would see the moon cast its shadow on the planet, creating a dark blob that will dart across the land from Mexico into Texas and up toward Maine and Canada.

And if you are lucky enough to be looking up from Earth in the moon’s shadow, you’ll see the sky fall dark, it will get colder and quieter, and for a special three to four minutes, you’ll be able to view the sun’s glowing white corona.

For many people in North America, April 8 is likely to be the best opportunity in their lifetime to experience a total solar eclipse. Most in the contiguous United States, however, will only experience a partial eclipse.

Whether you see a total or partial eclipse all depends on where you are to view the phenomenon.

An estimated 31.5 million people live within the roughly 115-mile wide path of totality that stretches from Mazatlán, Mexico, to Newfoundland, Canada. Inside the path, as the sun, moon and Earth become perfectly aligned, the moon blocks the sun and casts its shadow on Earth. The farther away you are from the center of this path, the less the moon will obscure the sun. People within the contiguous United States who are outside the path will see a partial eclipse.

“During a total eclipse, you’re plunged into the moon’s shadow. You’re in this eerie twilight. You can see bright stars and planets in the sky. And of course, the biggest attraction is you see the sun’s solar corona. You don’t see any of those things in the partial eclipse, even at 99 percent,” said Fred Espenak, a retired NASA astrophysicist who has experienced 30 total solar eclipses. “It’s the difference between night and day.”

The difference is so enormous, even veteran eclipse viewers often don’t have words that do justice to totality.

“You think you know what you’re going to experience, but you have no idea,” said Kate Russo, an author, psychologist and eclipse chaser who will be seeing her 14th total solar eclipse in April. “I always say it’s like the ineffable,” she added. “Sometimes things happen to us that we just have no words to describe.”

Inside the path, as the moon creeps closer to fully blocking the sun, the temperature drops and the light and wind change. Insects and animals may fall silent. Some birds might return to home to roost. And even though you’re expecting it, Russo said, it’s still so surprising.

“You notice the darkening that’s coming toward you, and that’s really eerie and it puts the hair on the back of your neck,” she said. “It really is quite exciting and thrilling, and you just can’t believe that it’s going to happen.”

The fleeting moments of totality will last anywhere from a few seconds to over four minutes, depending where you are inside the path. Mexico and 12 U.S. states have cities that will get duration times longer than four minutes. The longest totality will be in Torreón, Mexico, and will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds . Compared with other eclipses that typically only last a couple of minutes, that’s quite a long time. In 2017, the longest duration was near Carbondale, Ill., where the eclipse lasted for 2 minutes and 42 seconds.

For one of her books , Russo interviewed first-time eclipse viewers asking how totality made them feel. Their responses aligned with her own experiences: Within totality, the awe, connection and euphoria that people experience leaves them feeling both insignificant and a part of something greater than themselves, Russo said.

“We’re only on this Earth for just a split second of time. And I think these moments actually highlight that for you,” she said. “It puts all our other concerns or problems just into perspective.”

Within totality, there’s a lot to see when you remove your safety glasses. April’s eclipse will coincide with heightened solar activity. As the moon blocks the bright face of the sun, it reveals the sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona, and can show plumes of gas, referred to as streamers, escaping into space. These look like bright streaks or feathery rays flowing around the edge of the sun. Prominences, or magnetic loops that glow bright pink or red around the inner atmosphere, will also probably be more visible. Venus and Jupiter can also be seen on either side of the sun.

Outside of totality, the partial eclipse — even a view with 99 percent of the sun obscured — must be viewed safely with a simple viewer or safety glasses . According to Espenak, once you’re out of the path of totality, there’s not a big difference in what you’ll see. “It’s just a thinner slice of the sun that’s visible. It’s only when you make that transformation from the partial eclipse to a total eclipse that you get this dramatic change.”

Patrick Poitevin, an eclipse chaser and astronomer from Derbyshire, England, has experienced 24 total eclipses. Poitevin, who said he’s always looking for a “different” or “extreme” view, will travel to Mazatlán in April. He added that there’s lots to see along the edge or just inside or outside the path of totality using a telescope with a hydrogen-alpha filter. “What a show!” he wrote of an eclipse last year in Kosrae, Micronesia, in which he saw from a mile outside of the path a nearly 360-degree view of the chromosphere, a colored layer of the sun’s atmosphere, just above the solar surface. “Mesmerising,” he added.

While total solar eclipses happen about every 18 months , they are often in remote parts of the world, including the middle of the ocean. By contrast, this eclipse will pass through several densely populated cities. “It’s not that common that you get a total eclipse going through your home country,” Espenak said. “We had the 2017 eclipse, and before that it was 1979. So that was a 38-year gap.”

The next total solar eclipse visible across the contiguous United States won’t be until 2045 and will travel from California through Florida. After that, a 2078 eclipse will pass through nine Southern states.

“If you can’t travel [to totality], still go out and enjoy the partial eclipse,” Russo advises. To view the eclipse in April, she will be heading to Uvalde County, Tex., where she has held workshops and helped local officials with planning. “This is your chance,” she said, “an easy chance to get into the path.”

Espenak, whose work at NASA included eclipse predictions, met his wife, Patricia, during a 1995 eclipse in India. For 25 years, Patricia had struck out on seeing totality — her view was either partial or cloudy. It was only in India where she finally saw totality. The two will be traveling from Arizona to Mazatlán to view April’s eclipse, and Fred will be speaking.

“ I’m excited at every single one. Over a lifetime of seeing these things, I get goose bumps, and there’s that thrill of seeing it every single time,” Espenak said. “No matter how many photographs or videos you look at, it’s nothing like the real McCoy.”

About this story

We created the eclipse animations by interpolating the moon’s path, calculating its trajectory based on the initial, midpoint and final positions during the eclipse.

Eclipse animation data was sourced from the Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses Database by Xavier M. Jubier, which is based on NASA’s eclipse predictions by Fred Espenak. The algorithms used were drawn from “Elements of Solar Eclipses 1951-2200” and “Astronomical Algorithms.” Eclipse track data was obtained from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio.

Eclipse city view animation speeds are not reflective of actual eclipse durations. Half of the city of San Antonio, Texas falls within totality and half falls outside of totality. So depending on where you are inside the city, the sun may not be 100% obscured as it is depicted in the animation.

Franklin High School student commits to Coast Guard Academy

FRANKLIN, Texas (KBTX) - A Franklin High School senior is continuing her education at the prestigious United States Coast Guard Academy after revealing her decision at her signing ceremony Tuesday.

Sarah Haisler knew that she wanted to pursue a career in the military after attending a summer program organized by the Coast Guard.

Her ultimate goal is to become a helicopter pilot.

“Protecting our country and saving people like those people did last night in the Coast Guard, you know, it’s a great feeling and I’m really excited to be able to serve my country like that,” she said.

Thousands of students across the country compete for less than 300 spots in the academy.

For her admission into West Point, Sarah needed to be endorsed by a member of Congress. Rep. Pete Sessions nominated Sarah for this prestigious appointment after a lengthy vetting process.

”I have to have my seal of approval on it for myself, but also for people to have their respect. This community knows her best and I listened to many people. They said, ‘Sarah’s the right one.’” he said.

Congressman Sessions said endorsing her was an easy decision because of her academic record and leadership in the community.

“I believe she has the character not only to know herself but to be a leader and when you’re a leader among your peers and in the community you come from, people want good things for you,” he said.

Sarah also considered offers from West Point and Texas A&M University.
