Shares of Easy Trip Planners Ltd jumped 6 per cent in Monday's trade, even as the promoter Nishant Pitti announced suspension of all Maldives flights by EaseMyTrip in the aftermath of the derogatory remarks made by now-suspended Maldivian ministers on India and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent visit to Lakshadweep.

On Monday, Easy Trip Planners shares rose 5.96 per cent to hit a high of Rs 43.90 on BSE. The stock gained, as Easy Trip Planners announced incorporation of a subsidiary in the name of “EasyTrip Insurance Broker Private Ltd” on January 5, with the company promoter Nishant Pitti as a director in the subsidiary company.

Pitti held 28.67 per cent stake in Easy Trip Planners as on September 30 while the promoter group owned 65.54 per cent stake in the company in the period mentioned. The Easy Trip Planners stock is flat in the last six months and down 18.46 per cent in the last one year.

In a filing to BSE, Easy Trip Planners had on January 6 suggested that EaseMyTrip Insurance Broker Private Limited will add a new revenue vertical for the company and enable it to scale up its business for insurance broker and related services. Its registered office is in the National Capital Delhi and the main object inter-alia is to carry out the Insurance Broker Business, Easy Trip Planners said.

On the deal consideration, Easy Trip Planner said 60 per cent subscription to the share capital is in cash. The authorised and subscribed capitals of the target entity stood at Rs 7.50 lakh, the company said.

Patti on Monday, in a post on X, erstwhile Twitter, said EaseMyTrip has suspended all Maldives flight bookings in solidarity with the nation.

Easy Trip Planners surges after board approves bonus share issue, stock split

Each equity share of face value of rs 2 will be split into two of face value re 1 fully paid- up..

Share price of Easy Trip Planners gained 2.5 percent on October 10, soon after the board approved bonus issue of 3 shares for every share held as well as approved stock split in the ratio of 1:2.

Both will take effect on or before December 8. Each equity share of face value of Rs 2 will be split into two of face value Re 1 fully paid- up.

At 11:45 am, the stock was quoting at Rs 412 on the National Stock Exchange. It has gained over 50 percent in 2022 so far.

Explaining the rationale behind the stock split and bonus issue, the company said, “We have grown significantly in terms of business and performance over the years. This is reflected in the share price of the company. Travel Advisers: When to Let a Professional Plan Your Trip

Decades ago, your vacation most likely began with a visit to a travel agent, who relied on a combination of expertise and connections to find the best deals on plane tickets, hotels, tours and more. Since then, the internet has turned most of us into our own travel agents, and artificial intelligence software is making research and self-booking even easier. But for some trips, that special insider knowledge can still make a big difference.

So when should you hire a professional, and how does it all work? Here are some tips.

Why should I consider a travel adviser?

It’s easy for a traveler to do the research for a standard trip, said Chris Anderson, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, “so they should look for a specialist for the type of tour they are looking for, say a bike trip in Ireland, who can really add value.”

The insider knowledge offered by a travel adviser can add the most value to trips that have multicity itineraries, involve a wide age range of travelers , are very significant (like an anniversary vacation) or are to destinations you are unfamiliar with, said Gary R. Johnson, who has run the travel agency Woodside Travel in Seattle for nearly 30 years. An adviser could help you decide, for instance, in which order to visit European cities based on local events and transportation options.

What can an adviser give me that a booking site can’t?

Travel advisers can help you research the best destinations, lodging, or activities for your particular group and travel goals, offering up specific advice that might be hard or time-consuming to find yourself. Those specializing in cruises might know which cabin to choose if you are prone to seasickness, while a safari planner could help you decide which park would be best for bird-watching or seeing specific animals, like rhinos.

Travel advisers typically have relationships with tour companies, hotels and cruise lines, sometimes through networks. Those connections can allow advisers to offer extra perks such as late checkout, free breakfast, airport transfers, a welcome basket or a credit to spend on a cruise ship.

“A good travel agent will be a better steward of your travel budget than you are,” said Guy Rubin, managing director of Imperial Tours , which arranges travel in China.

When bad weather or other circumstances disrupt your itinerary, travel advisers often have direct lines of communication with providers and can do the work of rebooking and changing plans, saving you time and stress.

OK, let’s say I need help. How do I find an adviser?

Networks like the American Society of Travel Advisors and Travel Leaders have websites that can help you start your search for a travel adviser by answering a few questions about your desired trip. Once you have a handful to choose from, get on the phone with them to talk about what they might do for you, how they charge and the level of service you can expect. Special trips can cost thousands of dollars, so it’s worth investing time up front, Mr. Rubin said.

Make sure to read over the travel agent’s reviews and any user-generated social content that mentions them, Dr. Anderson said. “If there is no external validation, that’s a red flag.”

How do advisers get paid, and how much will it cost me?

Advisers receive commission from suppliers, typically 10 to 15 percent of the price, when selling cruises, lodging and tours. They also sometimes charge travelers a planning fee, from a few hundred dollars, which may be credited to the final bill if the booking is completed, all the way up to tens of thousands of dollars annually for a luxury concierge travel planner they can call on all year. Mr. Johnson said that he charges a planning fee the first time he works with customers. If they return for other trips, he waives the fee.

Advisers may be tempted to sell you something that will earn them a higher commission, Dr. Anderson said. But, he points out, the same is true for the large online services, which promote hotels that pay them larger commissions. Travelers can ask advisers about specific commissions they receive or how they are affiliated with the products they are recommending, he said.

Sometimes a local tour company will package transportation, lodging and experiences for an adviser, who tacks on a percentage before passing it along to a client. But a bill that is not itemized can make it harder to make trade-offs — between a more expensive hotel and a special experience, for example. If pricing transparency is important to you, discuss it with the adviser up front.

How are A.I. and other technologies affecting travel advisers?

While new technologies are allowing do-it-yourselfers to create their own itineraries online based on individual preferences, and to type questions directly into travel websites, advisers are also taking advantage of those technologies to improve their services. Joan Roca, chief executive of the upscale travel planning company Essentialist said his team “uses technology to enhance the human touch,” employing artificial intelligence to choose options from a database of travel offerings selected by a human team. If a couple wants to take an after-dinner stroll, for example, Essentialist’s app will offer up ideas of where to go, based on what part of the city the travelers are in and conversations they’ve had with their travel adviser.

Tensions and desperation are growing on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic

DAJABÓN, Dominican Republic — As the crisis in Haiti spirals deeper into chaos, the neighboring Dominican Republic is bracing for more migrants arriving amid ongoing tensions between the two countries.

The border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic has been closed for days as violence in Haiti dramatically escalated following a mass prison break in Port-au-Prince . But on Thursday and Friday, Haitians were allowed into a farmer’s market in the border town of Dajabón, which has a population of 25,000 and is about 120 miles from the Haitian capital.

Under the watchful eye of border guards, hundreds of Haitians rushed into the market to buy whatever food they could carry with what little money they had, as temperatures exceeded 95 degrees. Men hurriedly pushed wheelbarrows full of corn, eggs and drinking water. Women carried buckets of supplies on their heads. 

It was so crowded that on Friday one woman was badly injured when she fell off a bridge into the brush below. Bystanders said she lost her balance in the stampede to get food.

Meanwhile, a robust security presence is visible, with troops manning checkpoints and razor wire topping border fences. And each day, bus after bus is seen deporting Haitians who were in the Dominican Republic illegally.  

There has long been friction between Haitians and Dominicans along this part of the border. The Dajabón River, also known as the Massacre River in reference to Spanish settlers who killed French buccaneers in the 1720s , divides the countries and has long been the source of a dispute that continues to this day.

The current violence in Haiti , where militias and armed groups have taken over the streets of the capital, is the culmination of a crisis that has been growing for more than a year. In response, Dominican President Luis Abinader has increased patrols along the border over concerns of a Haitian migrant influx. He is also building a 108 mile-long wall. 

“Either we all fight together to save Haiti or we fight on our own to protect the Dominican Republic,” Abinader told the United Nations Security Council last month.

Across the border from Dajabón in Quanaminthe, Haiti, dozens of people gathered awaiting supplies. The largely rural area is far removed from the raging violence in Port-au-Prince. Instead, extreme hunger is the more pressing issue here. The United Nations estimates that nearly 1 million people in Haiti are on the brink of famine.  

Elena Franck, 40, crossed into the Dominican Republic with two of her teenage children to sell shoes at the market and gather whatever food they could bring home. Her husband died three years ago from heart disease and her family was growing increasingly more desperate. Her 14- and 16-year-old girls skipped school, hoping to help her sell more sneakers at the Dajabón stand. 

“We don’t have work,” Franck said. “We don’t have a president. We have nothing.” 

Quality of life is notably better in the Dominican Republic , which relies on a robust tourism economy. The roots of this contrast wind through corruption and stretch back to French-controlled slavery in colonial-era Haiti . 

White House National Security Communications adviser John Kirby said Thursday the U.S. was considering temporarily housing Haitian migrants at Guantanamo Bay, like it has done before. He added that the U.S. is not seeing a large increase of migrants from Haiti so far.

The president of Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, said Friday that a group of Caribbean nations, international partners and Haitian stakeholders, known as CARICOM, have reached an agreement for a political transition council. The agreement includes the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who remains in Puerto Rico, as well as “a pact for a peaceful transition of power, continuity of governance, an action plan for near-term security and the road to free and fair elections,” according to a statement from the group .

Many in Haiti view the CARICOM plan to create a transitional presidential council of local leaders with skepticism. Militia leader Jimmy “Barbeque” Chérizier and influential Haitian politician Jean-Charles Moïse are among those who oppose CARICOM's plan, with Moïse putting forth his plan to instead instate a three-person political council that would include the rebel who ousted the president of Haiti in 2004.

A multinational security force — led by Kenya but largely funded by the U.S. — appears to be on hold. 

“We have a lot more work to do to get this multinational security support mission up and running on the ground to assist the Haitian National Police,” Kirby said.

At least 200 Americans who are trapped in Haiti have registered with the State Department as the escalating violence has shuttered the country’s airports and border crossings. 

Uncertainty over the future is debilitating. In Dajabón on Thursday, Waniou Janvier, 47, said he was looking for any money he could find in order to make his way back to Cap-Haitian, Haiti, to retrieve documents. In English, he said he was from Miami but when he recently visited family in Haiti, a gang overtook his bus, leaving him with no passport and no way out.

“They took my stuff,” he said. “My documents. My bags. My phones. My money that I had in my pocket.”

His only possessions now: the clothes on his back and a decades-old transcript from Miami Edison High School that he hoped would serve as some sort of identification.

“The situation in Haiti right now is terrible,” he said.

Multiple state, county, and city agencies have been preparing for months for the 2024 eclipse event on April 8, 2024. Parts of southeastern Oklahoma will experience a total solar eclipse.

Oklahoma is expected to receive an influx of anywhere from 17,000 to 66,000 visitors to watch the solar eclipse, according to a study conducted by the GreatAmericanEclipse.com. Visitors will likely watch the eclipse within the path of totality in which the moon will completely block out the sun. This stretches across southeastern Oklahoma. The path of totality will completely cover McCurtain County, and partially cover Choctaw, Bryan, Atoka, Pushmataha, Latimer, and Leflore Counties. The town with the longest total eclipse viewing time will be Shults, Oklahoma, approximately 3 miles east of Idabel, with 4 minutes and 19 seconds of viewing time, according to eclise2024.org. The eclipse will pass over Oklahoma starting at 1:44 p.m. CDT and end by 1:51 p.m. CDT on April 8, 2024.

The large influx of visitors to southeastern Oklahoma could overwhelm and backup the area's road systems. The major highways in the area are US-70, US-259, and State Highway 3. These roads are mostly two-lane highways passing through small towns.

State and local authorities are working together to prepare for the event and to keep both visitors and residents safe. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol will have extra troopers in the southeastern part of the state before, during, and after the eclipse.

Is it safe to travel to Haiti right now? What travelers should know

The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Haiti amid fresh gang violence in the country, which declared a state of emergency last week.

While neither the warnings nor violence are entirely new – Haiti has been a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination in State Department travel advisories since before the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse – a spate of recent high-profile attacks, including an attempt by armed gangs to seize control of the country’s main international airport, has sparked renewed urgency. 

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. Embassy in Haiti said in a security alert issued Sunday. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is severely limited.” 

The U.S. military stepped in to airlift American personnel “into and out of the Embassy” to augment security, U.S. Southern Command said Sunday in a statement to USA TODAY. Meanwhile, U.S. citizens in Haiti can fill out crisis intake forms and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program program for updates.

Are there direct flights to Haiti?

Three U.S. airlines typically operate direct flights to Haiti: American, JetBlue and Spirit. However, all three have temporarily suspended service and issued travel waivers for the Caribbean destination.

◾ American Airlines customers with flights scheduled to, through, or from Port-au-Prince (PAP) through March 25 may modify flights without paying change fees. Changes must be made by March 25 with the same origin and destination cities as the original booking.

◾ JetBlue Airways is waiving change and cancellation fees for travelers with flights scheduled to and from Port-au-Prince through April 15. Changes can be made through April 30.

◾ Spirit Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences on travel to, from, or through Cap Haitien (CAP) and Port-au-Prince through April 15. Travelers should rebook by April 30. After that, the airline said change fees would still be waived, but fare differences may apply.

Is Royal Caribbean still going to Haiti?

Royal Caribbean and its sister line Celebrity Cruises normally sail to Labadee, Haiti , a private destination roughly six hours away from Port-au-Prince by car. However Royal Caribbean is skipping several previously scheduled stops, in coming days.

The following sailings will not go to Labadee.

"The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. "Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee. We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly."

As recently as Monday, the cruise line had not canceled any sailings to Labadee, but was keeping a close on the situation while noting that it had private security in the area, which was closed to the public.

It doesn’t look like any Celebrity cruises are scheduled there until fall.

We're ending tonight's show with Emmanuel Macron's boxing photos that have taken social media by storm.

The French president's official photographer, Soazig de la Moissonnière, posted two black and white images of him in action using a punch bag, looking determined as he offloads right hooks in a fitted black T-shirt.

The photos led to lots of compliments for the 46-year-old leader on his sizeable biceps.

Some even compared him to the film icon Rocky Balboa.

One of Sophy's panellists is Fraser Nelson , editor of The Spectator.

Despite recent defections from the Tories to Reform, and the party gaining ground on them in the polls, he's not convinced that it's actually proving that popular with voters.

It all says more about the Conservatives, he says.

"Reform is basically coming out with Conservative messages," he says.

"And people are saying 'I no longer trust the Conservatives on these messages, so I'll go with Reform'.

"Farage had a different one - he wanted to leave the EU and David Cameron didn't."

While Mr Farage is a key figure in Reform, its leader is Richard Tice, who "doesn't have Farage-style charisma".

People backing Reform is based on "push factors away from the Tories rather than pull factors towards Reform", he adds.

The former Tory mayor candidate for Greater Manchester, who defected today, tells Sophy Ridge he plans to stand in the race for Reform UK. 

He says that while they don't have the resources the Conservative Party has, Reform UK have been more forthcoming with resources "in 24 hours than the Conservative Party has in four months". 

Asked how the defection came about, he says he approached Reform UK, knowing they were "interested" in him.

He describes getting a "warm reception" from those he has spoken to within the party. 

"It feels good," he says.

Asked how he would describe the leadership of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak he says he has "no legitimate mandate".

"I think he must struggle within himself with the sort of decisions he's making, knowing that he's not really got a legitimate mandate," Mr Barker says.

On the show now is Dan Barker, the former Conservative candidate for the Manchester mayoral race who defected to Reform UK today. 

Asked what prompted his decision, he says the Tories have "given up on Greater Manchester and the north of England".

They "no longer support my politics, my conservative values," he adds.

Mr Barker's defection comes after the former deputy chairman of the Conservatives, Lee Anderson announced he would be joining Reform UK, having been ousted from his party after failing to apologise for comments he made about London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Former Labour special adviser  Ayesha Hazarika tells Sophy Ridge the WASPI women (see previous post) have been victims of "institutionalised sexism and ageism".

"I do feel part of why these WASPI women have been ignored is the fact they were older women," she says.

A long-awaited report on how women born in the 1950s were affected by increases to their retirement age has recommended today they are owed compensation.

An investigation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) found thousands of women born in the 1950s may have been adversely impacted by the government's failure to adequately inform them of the change.

A group of women impacted by the change - known as the WASPI women - has campaigned over the issue since 2015.

 Perhaps the biggest story of the day was a watchdog finding women affected by a change in the state pension age are owed compensation.

To date, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has not acknowledged its failings or put things right for those women, the watchdog said.

The ombudsman noted that the department has indicated it will not comply with the findings and called on parliament to intervene.

Travis Frain, who seven years ago tomorrow was caught up in the Westminster Bridge terror attack, says the prime minister's response to a survivors' support initiative has been "abysmal".

He says he helped put together a survivors' charter to improve support for people impacted by terrorism. It examined practices in different countries and outlined a roadmap for implementing changes. 

Consulting on a survivors' charter was both a Labour and Conservative manifesto commitment in 2019, he adds.

But he says repeated letters to the government in recent years have been repeatedly ignored. 

Asked how he would describe Rishi Sunak's response, he says: "Poor, if not abysmal."

'Lives irrevocably changed'

He says he has now met the home secretary this week, but that a review conducted by the Home Office into support for victims of terrorism concluded in February of last year and hasn't yet been published.

He says with each passing anniversary he reflects on the number of attacks which have followed, saying it's "worrying" that after each of those, we "have a potentially short memory as a society in terms of moving on".

"I recognise that for the vast majority of people, terrorism will be this abstract concept," he says. 

"But for the people in those five attacks, their lives are irrevocably changed and those are people who could have received better support. And yet actually often in many cases receive exactly the same support I did in 2017."

Seven years ago tomorrow, he survived the 2017 Westminster Bridge terror attack, which killed five people and injured more than 50.

He tells Sophy he had only just turned 19 and was on a university trip to London when he was hit by a car which mounted the pavement near parliament, mowing down pedestrians. 

He suffered a broken left leg, broke nearly all the bones in his head and was also severely lacerated on his leg. 

'Lucky' to have survived

It took months to recover, but he says he considers himself "lucky" to have survived without lifelong injuries.

He says in the years that followed, getting the support he needed was a "battle" which became "one of the most difficult parts".

"Unfortunately, as I came to realise very quickly over the years following, support … wasn't as easily available as I think we would take for granted," he says. 

"It was not the attack, which itself I believe was over in about 90 seconds. 

"Of course, we have to deal with the psychological impacts of what we saw on that day, but it's the battle we've had to endure over the years following that's been one of the most difficult parts."

He describes it as a battle with "our own country, our own government, our own society to try to get the support that survivors require. 

Travis is now campaigning for a National Day of Service and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism - and for greater support for those victims.

As frustrating as it might be for the government, the prime minister and chancellor will be relieved that the signs are they will come down before too long.

"It's a guessing game," says Ed, who reckons it could happen in May, June, or maybe August - perhaps it will coincide with an election!

A good sign is that the Bank didn't view the chancellor's spring budget earlier this month as being "super inflationary".

"We are moving closer and closer towards rates being cut," Ed says, but until then it's a "waiting game".

And there's no guarantee that it will lead to the "economic feel good factor" that the Tories will be looking for before the election.

After news that inflation had dropped to 3.4% earlier this week, there were indications from the Bank of England today that interest rates will fall before long too.

They were held at 5.25% for the fifth consecutive time, but the Bank said prospects for a cut were "moving in the right direction".

While the pace of price growth in the economy is hugely down on the 11% witnessed at the height of the energy-driven cost of living crisis, a headline reading of 3.4% remains well above the Bank's target of 2%.

The committee is particularly worried that strong wage growth - riding well above the inflation rate at 6% - will stoke demand in the economy and create further inflationary pressures.
