Ang Thong National Marine Park, Thailand: How to Visit & What To Expect

Ang Thong National Marine Park: How to Visit & What To Expect

Limestone and turquoise waters.

The first time we visited the Gulf of Thailand together in 2014, we didn’t make the trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park.

When we returned and spent 2 months on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in early 2019, we knew we had to go.

At first, we thought a day-trip would be sufficient.

But the more we researched, the more we got sold on the idea of staying on the main island of the archipelago overnight . And we were so glad we did!

In this travel guide to Ang Thong National Marine Park, we’ll share our best tips on visiting the magnificent place whether or not you stay for just half a day, a night or even several.

Why you should visit Ang Thong National Marine Park

With Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao to the east and the Thai mainland to the west, Ang Thong National Marine Park sits on prime real estate in the Gulf of Thailand.

There are 42 islands in the archipelago ranging widely in size and shape, but what they have in common is their unparalleled beauty – both under and above the saturated water.

Though it’s not the biggest island of Ang Thong National Marine Park, Koh Wua Talap is considered the main island of the archipelago.

This is where you’ll find the national park’s headquarters as well as the main draw of Ang Thong; “ The viewpoint of viewpoints ” or “the most beautiful sight in Thailand” – a sweeping view over the islands and the pristine waters surrounding them.

Koh Wua Talap is also home to a stunning beach , an interesting cave with stalagmites and stalactites and a few bands of cute monkeys . There’s also a second beach we didn’t visit.

If you intend to spend a night inside the national park, you’ll sleep on Koh Wua Talap.

Ang Thong viewpoint: The viewpoint of viewpoints hike

The hike to get to Pha Jun Jaras viewpoint is steep and quite arduous, but so worth the effort.

Even though “the viewpoint of viewpoints” sounds a bit corny, it seems fitting once you see the ocean sparkle around the jungled limestone cliffs in the distance. It is also aptly named the Ang Thong viewpoint.

It’s almost 500 metres of vertical climbing to get to the top, all on pretty good stairs.

Most people will spend 30-45 minutes getting up there and a little less to get down again. Set aside extra time for photos.

Going early or late in the day will be much more comfortable as you’ll avoid the heat and humidity of mid-day.

If you want to save time (or your legs!) it’s possible to stop at other viewpoints on the way up that still present striking views of Koh Wua Talap’s beach and the rest of the islands in the archipelago.

Bua Bok Cave

On most day-tours, you get to choose between visiting either the viewpoint or the cave.

We were really glad we got to experience both.

The trek to the cave isn’t long, but it’s a little difficult with some sections requiring scrambling and very basic climbing .

When we went in the morning, we were all alone at the cave which actually felt a little spooky.

The stalagmites and stalactites are impressive, though, and the light entering from both sides makes the cave very photogenic.

On the other islands of Ang Thong, it’s possible to visit an emerald lake , hike to other viewpoints , chill out on the secluded beaches or enjoy the marine life by snorkelling in the clear waters.

Staying overnight in Ang Thong

To our knowledge, Koh Wua Talap is the only place you can stay as a tourist in Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park.

We booked a night in one of the few bungalows in the national park to be able to spend more time soaking in the beauty of this place.

Being more or less alone on Koh Wua Talap also gave us the opportunity to witness the view from the top at both sunset and sunrise – all by ourselves.

Which was, perhaps almost needless to say, the highlight of our Ang Thong-trip (if not of our whole two months in Thailand!).

Standing up there was such a spectacular feeling.

Our bungalow

The bungalow had a bathroom with a shower, toilet and running water.

There were also toilet paper, soap and towels.

The beds were single beds .

We had a fan (which we didn’t need) and electricity was on until 23.00 in the evening.

It’s also possible to either sleep in a tent or bring your own.

House on Koh Wua Talap

There’s a restaurant on Koh Wua Talap serving tasty Thai meals for both breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Have patience.

Prices range from about 60 to 120 baht (~ 2 to 4 USD / 1.75 to 3.5 EUR) for a meal.

How to stay overnight in Ang Thong National Marine Park?

We’ll be honest: Booking the bungalow wasn’t exactly easy, and arriving at Koh Wua Talap, we weren’t completely sure if had actually booked anything .

Thankfully, everything had worked out and we even got a way-too-big bungalow with room enough for a huge family.

We booked the accommodation with the help of the travel operator on Koh Samui with whom we also booked the boat tour itself.

It’s possible to do it yourself, but navigating the national park’s reservation system isn’t without quirks.

To pay for our bungalow, it seemed like the only option we had was to transfer funds to the national park by going to a local bank and paying. This was simple enough, but just be aware of the bank’s opening hours and national holidays.

When booking your boat tour , make sure to specify that you’re staying overnight and intend to get picked up again the following day. It also doesn’t hurt to double-check with the boat crew.

Once you reach Koh Wua Talap, approach the visitor centre to check-in .

How to get to Ang Thong National Marine Park

Many boat companies operate daily tours to Ang Thong National Marine Park.

Tickets can be bought from most travel agents around Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao or from Surat Thani on the mainland. You can also ask at your hotel or even at many restaurants – it is Thailand, after all.

It is certainly also possible to book your tour online (adlink) .

Being the most popular tourist destination in the Gulf of Thailand, most Ang Thong tours leave from Koh Samui .

Ang Thong is located about 28 kilometres from Koh Samui and 32 kilometres from Koh Phangan.

Speedboat tours for around 2,500 baht per person (~ 80 USD / 73 EUR) carrying a maximum of 30 people is a popular choice, while the slower ferries are cheaper.

Some ferries can sail with up to 50 people and some even carry up to 100 people.

Most tours make a stop at the emerald lake on Koh Mae Ko before heading to the national park’s headquarters at Koh Wua Talap.

Speedboats might be able to cram in an extra stop.

There’s an entrance fee of 300 baht per person (~ 9.4 USD / 8.3 EUR) to the national park which is sometimes included in the price of your tour.

Kayaking, snorkelling gear, food and drinks are sometimes included as well, but not always – so make sure to double-check with your travel agent.

Speedboat or ferry in Ang Thong

Prices vary across tour operators, but the standard price is around 1,800 baht per person (~ 58 USD / 52 EUR) including kayaking or 1,300 baht per person (~ 42 USD / 38 EUR) without a kayak. Children receive a discount.

We paid 1,100 baht (~ 36 USD / 32 EUR) for the trip to Ang Thong and back to Koh Samui on the following day.

A typical ferry going to Ang Thong National Marine Park

Our tour included:

  • Mini bus transfers from around Samui (we drove to the harbour on our own bike, though).
  • Unlimited water from a water dispenser + soda from big bottles.
  • Coffee, tea and cocoa.
  • Simple breakfast.
  • Lunch buffet.
  • Life jackets.
  • Snorkelling equipment.
  • Dry bags (if you are going kayaking).
  • Marine park fees.
  • English speaking guides.

Our boat to Ang Thong from Koh Samui

Food on our ferry

When we left from Nathon Pier on Koh Samui, breakfast was served on the ferry consisting of bananas and boring croissants. You could also help yourself to a cup of coffee, tea or cocoa (in powder form) with milk powder and sugar.

After our first stop on the boat tour, lunch was served as a small buffet with rice, spring rolls with rice noodles and vegetables, sweet chilli sauce, vegetables (corn, carrots and kale), curry with chicken and potatoes as well as watermelon and pineapple.

Drinking water was free from a big cooler. As we had brought our refillable bottles, we easily had enough to stay overnight.

Soda, beer and chips were sold from the small shop onboard along with dry bags to keep your phone dry.

If you have kayaking included in your trip, you’ll paddle along the limestone cliffs for about 20 minutes. You can borrow a dry bag for free.

Kayaking in Ang Thong

The seas in the Gulf of Thailand are at their calmest from March to October.

Between November and January, Ang Thong National Park may close due to bad weather conditions.

When we visited in February, the seas were too rough for the boat to pick us up at Koh Wua Talap, so we had to get transported in a dinghy. It was a fun adventure and nothing to be scared of.

It should be noted in this regard, though, that getting to and from the islands from the boats requires some balancing skills if there are waves.

The dinghy that had to take us to the larger ferry

  • Swimwear . You’ll really want to jump in!
  • A sarong or a quick-dry towel (adlinks) for drying and chilling on the beaches.
  • Sun protection ; a hat, sunglasses, light covering clothes and an eco-friendly sunscreen (adlink) .
  • Hiking shoes or sneakers if you want to walk to the Ang Thong viewpoint or to the cave.
  • You own snacks (you can also buy some on the boat or at the restaurant by the headquarters of the national park at Koh Wua Talap).
  • Thai baht in cash for the restaurant on Koh Wua Talap.
  • Headlamp or flashlight if you want to hike before sunrise or after sunset.
  • If you stay for one night or more, you might also want to bring mosquito spray .
  • A good camera – here’s our guide to lightweight photography gear for high-quality travel content .
  • Don’t bring your drone . Drones aren’t allowed in the national park.

Ang Thong National Marine Park stairs and viewpoint

To minimise your impact when visiting the Ang Thong National Marine Park, follow these guidelines:

  • Bring your own drinking water in a refillable bottle (adlink) .
  • Avoid single-use plastics , including straws.
  • Dispose of waste properly . Preferably take anything you bring to the national park back with you.
  • Check your sunscreen . Many brands contain oxybenzone and other chemicals that are harmful to corals.
  • Take only photos, leave only footprints . Let shells and corals stay in their natural home.
  • Be considerate of other visitors.
  • Respect any wildlife you might encounter. Don’t feed the monkeys.

Also, consider going beyond minimising your impact by joining the Adventure Bag Movement and pick up some trash during your exploring.

Angthong marine park: how to plan your day.

Let’s cover the basics of Ang Thong Marine Park quite quickly: it’s beautiful, and you need to go there. Actually, you’ve probably already seen it without realising. How so? Read on...

Ang Thong National Marine Park

So, where have you seen Ang Thong Marine Park? When Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t splendidly shirtless and fighting crocodiles, his character in The Beach spent some time at Ang Thong’s beautiful, bright blue lake: Thale Nai, or Emerald Lake.

What is Ang Thong?

42 islands comprise this protected archipelago. If you’re picturing a “park-park”, replace picnic benches in your mind with, oh, three dozen more islands. 41 of the islands are uninhabited. Sea gypsies are said to live on one, living as traditional fishermen.

Ang Thong Marine Park is 250 km², though most visitors will see only a tiny portion.

Why visit Ang Thong Marine Park?

Even if you’ve spent time in other beautiful corners of Thailand – this place has extra-special all over. It’s remote, a few hours’ boat ride from Koh Samui (depending on the boat), though the islands’ composition looks even further removed. (Mountains and rock faces are limestone, as opposed to Koh Samui’s rich, orange-red, earth). The trip’s highlight is Emerald Lake at Ang Thong which you’ll likely recognise from the movie The Beach.

How to plan your day-trip to Ang Thong

Tip: Get more tips, charter recommendations and more ideas for day-trips in The Koh Samui Guide . ‍

Group excursion vs private charter : You heard it here first: there will be other people at Ang Thong Marine Park! Still prettier than where you're currently sitting? To have more control over your day at Ang Thong and where you stop, considering booking a more personalised charter. Private charters are available from a number of companies, as are ‘more the merrier’ mass outings. Of course, smaller, faster boats with more customisable itineraries do cost more (and vice versa).

‍ Group bookings will depart on a set schedule with designated times at each island stop - i.e. a few hours set aside for snorkelling. If you like groups and get along with strangers, you’re assured of a great day out. Otherwise, consider a private charter. A trip Ang Thong is amongst the best of Koh Samui's experiences.‍

‍ When to go: We recommend giving yourself a few days on Koh Samui before your excursion, in order to adjust to the strong sun and heat. You don’t want to spend a day on a boat in full sun before you’ve accepted you need major SPF.

‍ Schedules to Ang Thong: Plan for a full day out. Most tours leave Koh Samui early in the morning, and the journey by boat to Ang Thong is a few hours.

Ferry and boat options from Koh Samui to Ang Thong

Before you hire a boat: Be sure to ask what’s included and not – i.e. life jackets, drinking water and snacks, snorkel gear, etc. Reputable companies provide water but do make sure. Also, check in advance the availability of shade on the boat you choose! (Especially important if you're coming to Koh Samui with children).Get there in a big boat, little boat, private boat, busy boat, fast boat or by sailboat. Many Koh Samui charter companies have a range of craft to suit your budget and size of group.

‍ How to hire a boat and make a booking: If you have a big group, a tight schedule or specific requirements – certainly inquire with boat charters in advance, by email. Many have expat involvement so English language communication isn’t a problem. However, if you’d like to wait and see, it’s definitely possible to book your Ang Thong day-trip with little notice once on Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. You’ll find booking offices and travel agents all over Samui. Otherwise, check with your hotel and have them do the legwork. It’ll cost more, but laziness and holidays go so well together.

‘Ang Thong’ means “Golden Bowl”.

What to bring on your Ang Thong tour?

Mosquito protection: Standard for anything you do in Thailand, but especially so if you'll take any hikes or walks through vegetation up to viewpoints. As you'll be in and out of the water all day, you might add waterproof repellent bracelets . As always, a bottle of quality mosquito repellent, like Incognito , should be one of the first things in your day bag or backpack ( see my favourites ).

‍ Sun protection: Now's the time to add a long-sleeve UPF 50+ swim t-shirt , and anything else that's UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). Swim t-shirts tend to be thinner fabric than rash guards and are better for Thai heat and humidity. The joy of Ang Thong is a day of water and more water. Using sunscreen alone – even if you manage to reapply it on wet skin – you could end up badly sunburned by the end of the day. The genius of UPF fabric is that it retains its sun protection even when it's wet (unlike sunscreen which will give you 40 to 80 minutes depending on the brand). If you're fastidious about sun protection (or just don't want wrinkles), I recommend such a swim top as a vital packing inclusion.

‍ More sun protection: As for sunscreen? Note that common sunscreen ingredients known to harm coral reefs are (technically) banned in Thai national parks – including Ang Thong National Marine Park. If you'd like to stick to the letter of the law (or just do your bit for coral), pack a mineral sunscreen. I've tried most of them and prefer Blue Lizard Active Mineral-Based Sunscreen Lotion and Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen Spray .

‍ Sun hat: Finish your sun safety with a wide-brimmed sunhat – again in a UPF fabric. My choice here is Outdoor Research Sombriolet Sun Hat – tried and tested by yours truly on fast boats in strong wind. If your hat choice doesn't have a drawstring, plan to spend the multi-hour boat trip holding it on your head. Final flourish? Don't forget your lips: Jack Black SPF Lip Balm is my favourite.

‍ Appropriate shoes : You want grippy sandals that can get wet and will stay on your feet. Ideally they can handle a bit of hiking, too. Something like Keen sports sandals (+ women's version ) are ideal – sturdy sandals like these can handle water and grip slick surfaces. Getting from your boat to the island, you’ll likely need to hop in and out of a longtail boat tender – just a mention if anyone in your group would struggle.

‍ Waterproofing: A floating waterproof case for your phone is handy, as is a dry bag if you want to keep your things with you while kayaking.

‍ Water: Check that your charter provides drinking water. If you're not used to strong heat, you might include a tube of electrolyte drink tabs (or pack a carton of coconut water).

‍ Your backpack: If you're planning lots of island-y adventures in Thailand, it's worth packing a dedicated daypack and keeping it stocked with some "just in case" bits. Many hiking daypacks fold up to a tiny travel pouch that fits in your hand, as do micofibre travel towels . Finally, a mini first aid kit and seasickness bands (if you're so afflicted) earn you an A+ in preparation.

Things to do at Ang Thong

On arrival, you’ll probably visit the largest island, Koh Wua Ta Lap (though boutique tour operators avoid this busy spot and find quieter stops). Wua Ta Lap operates as a sort of “Camp HQ”, with a small restaurant and adjacent museum (perhaps a stretch of the term – on our last visit there was a preserved dugong in a tank). You might then eat lunch. The food is along ‘get what you’re given’ lines – it’s basic but not really the point of your trip. Call it camp food – sustenance on a nature outing, rather than Pad Thai of a lifetime.

‍ Reality vs expectation: Unlike the movie and the postcards, there will be other people at Ang Thong. It’s a great spot and, while not over-run, many TripAdvisor comments bemoan: “Lovely spot, shame about everyone else”. Depart for Ang Thong with realistic expectations. Yes, it's absolute paradise, but it's not going to be all yours. (However, boutique tour operators come as close as possible and do an incredible job of avoiding the crowds).

‍ Hike to Leo’s Lake (Emerald Lake): To see Leo’s Lake, you’ve got the option of hiking up some stairs to enjoy the view. You can’t swim in it or go near it – but nature’s better appreciated in a “look but don’t touch” sort of way, right? The climbs up to the viewpoints are quite steep – highly recommended if you’re in decent shape (and are wearing shoes or sandals up to the job). Small children might struggle with this climb.

‍ Beaches and snorkelling: Back down at sea level, you’ll have time to enjoy your desert island experience, swim, snorkel and enjoy your group’s company. Some charters offer kayaking as a separate option – the only way to see some of the caves up close.

‍ Wildlife viewing: Keep your eyes open and bring some binoculars! 16 types of mammals are found across the island (or so says Wikipedia).

Ang Thong Marine Park weather

Above all else – check the weather forecast before you depart for Ang Thong. If poor weather is predicted, perhaps postpone your day trip to avoid a rough journey.

Channelling Leo in The Beach is one thing, Titanic… quite another.

Ang Thong National Marine Park closing period

Are you coming to Koh Samui in November or December? The park is usually closed to visitors from November 1st through December 23rd yearly, to give nature and its creatures a break. That said, this period is Koh Samui’s rainy season , with a high likelihood of very rough seas. You don’t want to go to Ang Thong at that time of year, anyway. Promise. (If rainy season is light, these dates adjust accordingly. Ask your tour operator for updates). However you make it happen – do be sure to get to Ang Thong Marine Park at least once in your lifetime.

Ang Thong National Marine Park: Koh Samui Thailand Day Trip

Ang Thong National Marine Park is a group of 42 paradise islands in the Gulf of Thailand that you can visit on a day trip from Koh Samui or Koh Phangan.

The ultra scenic panorama viewpoint at Mu Ko Ang Thong (pictured above) should be reason enough to go. You get to see bunches of mini islands covered in jungle and scattered out on the blue horizon, a bit like Thailand’s version of Raja Ampat. It’s famous for being one of the best views in the whole country!

This travel guide will explain some of the sights you can expect to see in the marine park, as well as the best way to do it on a budget.

ang thong national marine park trip

How To Get To Ang Thong

The first step for visiting Ang Thong Marine Park is to get to either Koh Samui or Koh Phangan, Thailand’s two biggest islands in the Gulf.

Bangkok Airways has direct, nonstop flights to Samui (USM) from Bangkok (BKK) or Kuala Lumpur (KUL), but since the airport in Samui is privately owned by them, they have a monopoly on these flights and they tend to be a bit pricey at 3,000 Baht (~$100 USD). You can shop for flights to Koh Samui at Skyscanner.

AirAsia has flight/bus/ferry combo packages that go from Bangkok (DMK) or Kuala Lumpur to Samui or Phangan for less than 1,000 Baht (~$33 USD). Just type in Samui (Lipa Noi Pier) or Phangan (Thong Sala Pier) as your destination in the flight search box on their website and they will handle all of the transfers for you.

Once you reach Koh Samui or Phangan, a tour is essential to visit Ang Thong since the park has dozens of islands that are spread out over the sea and require lots of island hopping. More on that next!

Best Ang Thong Tour

Klook has day tours to Ang Thong from Koh Samui by speedboat for as low as 1,700 Baht (~$50 USD) including free hotel pickup/drop-off, buffet lunch, soft drinks, kayaking, and snorkeling (with snorkel gear provided). They also have a similar tour from Koh Phangan for the same price.

This is the best Ang Thong tour price I was able to find anywhere in Thailand. If you can find anything cheaper, Klook will match the price. For comparison, most of the street stalls in Koh Samui and Phangan were charging 30% more for this exact same day trip, and some of them didn’t even include kayaking in the price!

We were really happy with the Klook tour and everything went very smoothly. The guides were always helpful, and the buffet lunch was one of the best we’ve ever had on a day tour like this. We saw all the highlights of the park, and also got to do plenty of snorkeling and kayaking.

Things To Do & See In Ang Thong

🔸 snorkeling.

Snorkeling was the first stop on our tour. We spent a full hour snorkeling at some small unnamed islands north of the marine park.

Technically this part of the tour was outside of the national park, but the views were just as good and so was the snorkeling. We saw lots of fish and coral here.

ang thong national marine park trip

Kayaking was included for free in our tour, so after lunch we got the opportunity to paddle out to two different white sand beaches.

Wifey and I got lazy and turned back before the end, but it was fun to explore the rocks and coastline by kayak, especially if you haven’t done something like this before!

🔸 Emerald Lake

The Emerald Lake (aka Talay Nai) is a special gem on Ko Mae Ko island.

After a 15 minute hike to the top of the limestone karst walls, you get to stare into this incredible Gumby colored lake fed by underground sea tunnels. It’s a short hike to the top, but still pretty strenuous.

My only gripe is the ridiculously narrow, steep stairs. They’re terrible, even by the Thai government’s standards.

🔸 Pha Jun Jaras Viewpoint

The highlight of any trip to Ang Thong would have to be the main viewpoint on Ko Wua Talap where you can see all the islands (or at least a dozen of them) stretching out into the distance.

The hike to the top only takes about 30 minutes and it’s mostly shaded, but it’s still a huge workout because of the steepness and the merciless Thai heat. Drink plenty of water!

The view from the top is absolutely amazing.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Ang Thong National Marine Park and the nearby islands is from February to September, when it’s sunny and there’s little rain.

The monsoon season runs from October to January, and these are the months with the most rain and potentially rough seas.

With that said, we went in early October and the weather was still cloudless and sunny.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at a hotel called At Lamai Resort and paid $16 USD for a big double room with cold AC, hot shower, and fast WiFi.

This hotel is a great value. Even though it’s not located directly on Lamai Beach, you can easily reach the beach, markets, and restaurants with a 10 minute walk.

Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.

Ang Thong National Marine Park: all you need to know

Ang Thong National Marine Park is a stunning archipelago located in the Gulf of Thailand, not far from the popular tourist destinations of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. The park was established on 12th November 1980. and consists of 42 small, limestone islands, characterized by lush greenery, towering cliffs, and hidden coves. All of the islands are uninhabited and undeveloped except for one: Koh Wua Talap , where the visitor centre, campsite, and bungalows are located.

How to get there?

To get to Ang Thong National Marine Park, you need to travel to the nearby islands of Koh Samui or Koh Phangan, as it serves as a starting point for visiting the park. In both places, you will easily find tour agents offering day trips to the park. There are no boat tours from Surathani or Koh Tao.

Koh Samui and Koh Phangan can be reached on a ferry from Donsak Pier near Surat Thani. Raja Ferry is slow, cheap, uncomfortable, and takes about 1,5 hours to Koh Samui and 2,5 hours to Koh Phangan while Lomprayah is exactly the opposite but about twice the price and takes 45 minutes to Koh Samui and 1,5 hours to Koh Phangan. Time is money, they say. The choice is yours 🙂

Another option would be to fly to Koh Samui. There are regular flights from Bangkok and other major cities in Thailand, as well as some foreign destinations. Check your connections at  12Go.Asia .

How long to stay?

Typically people sign up for a one-day tour. However, camping is possible so if you wish to do so, you will need to make arrangements individually with the tour agent and the boat will pick you up on the next day. The rent of a tent for 2 people is 250 THB per person per night including a torch, clean sleeping bag, and mosquito net.

When to go?

The best period to visit Ang Thong National Marine Park is between December and August.

The dry season lasts from December to February and it’s the peak tourist season. Pleasant weather with lower humidity and cooler temperatures. Accommodation and flights can be more expensive, and popular tourist spots can be crowded.

From March to August, there is a hot season with higher temperatures and humidity. Occasional rain showers are possible but they are usually brief. May and June can be particularly hot.

Rainy season months, from September to November, are better to avoid. The prices are more budget-friendly but you may expect frequent rainfall and boat tours will most likely be closed.

Ang Thong National Marine Park in Thailand

Entrance fee to the park

When signing up for a tour, clarify if the entrance fee is included in the tour price. Normally it isn’t and extra cash is collected by tour companies before the trip starts or while you are on board.

The fees as of August 2023 are as follows: 300 THB for foreign adults and 150 THB for foreign kids. Thai citizens will pay 50 THB for adults and 25 THB for kids.

*all prices are from April 2022.

Where to stay?

Koh phangan.

The night in Mae Haad Garden Inn cost me about 12 EUR per night and I chose that location only because other options were not available because of the Full Moon Festival. I ended up very satisfied with it and the area was super calm. With a scooter, it was easy to reach any part of the island anyway. Chaloklum Beach was only a 10-minute ride away.

Later, I moved to the Shanti Boutique Hotel which was a bit more expensive but absolutely brilliant. The rooms are simple but very cozy and clean, and it’s nice that they come with a balcony. The location is great as well, near Srithanu Beach and Zen Beach. There are also many cafés and restaurants that offer super tasty food with a lot of variety.

I stayed for three nights at the Pamoni Hotel in Chaweng for about 19 EUR per night. It was basically a small apartment, with a living room and a kitchen, a bedroom, and a private bathroom and there was a swimming pool for guests too. A very good price-to-quality ratio and the location was very good too.

Ko Wua Talap

If you decide to extend your tour for the overnight stay, there are camping and bungalows to rent at the park headquarters on Ko Wua Talap Island. Facilities are basic: cold water shower and electricity from a generator that shuts down at 11 PM, but isn’t it a beauty of this place? You may also rent a kayak to explore the area from the water perspective independently.

There are numerous companies running daily trips from Koh Phangan and Koh Samui and first, you will need to decide if you prefer to take a speedboat or a slow boat. It takes about an hour to reach the islands by speedboat and about 2-3 hours by slow boat. You can save a lot of time choosing the first option but the ride can be bumpy and less enjoyable. The slow boat usually has a nice deck where you can sunbathe and take a lot of nice pictures.

I decided to choose a tour operated by the Orion Cruise , starting from Koh Phangan. It was a bigger and slower boat. As of April 2022, the cost was about 2.000 THB. Included in the price is pick-up from the hotel, lunch, snacks, soft drinks, and snorkelling equipment. You may pay an extra 200 THB if you go for an option with a kayak. The price included the Ang Thong National Marine Park entrance fee.

The day started with a slightly delayed pick up in the accommodation by a minivan and delivery to the pier. Coffee or tea and snacks were already waiting. The boat departed a few minutes after 9 AM and was going slowly so there was plenty of time to relax on the deck. The first stop was around Koh Wao, where we got our snorkeling equipment and jumped into the water to see some colourful fish and coral. It wasn’t bad but the water wasn’t perfectly clear and during my travels in South East Asia, I have visited much better snorkeling locations.

Ang Thong National Marine Park in Thailand

From there, the boat went deeper into the national park and at this point, it is better to be on the upper deck to have an unobstructed panoramic view of the small rocky islands all around. The boat stopped near Ao Ka Beach , which was a drop-off point for those who decided to choose the option of a kayak. To get to the beach itself, we had to switch to a long-tail boat first, as the slow boat was too big to get so close. The whole kayaking experience wasn’t too long and took about 30-40 minutes.

Ang Thong National Marine Park in Thailand

If you haven’t decided to have a kayak trip, you will stay on board and meet up with other participants later at Koh Mae Koh. It’s a wonderful island with a Blue Lagoon surrounded by steep limestone cliffs in the middle. Follow some steep stairs to get to the viewing platform and you won’t be disappointed. The color of the water is bizarre yet very beautiful.

Ang Thong National Marine Park in Thailand

The last stop was at the biggest island in the archipelago: Koh Wua Talap . Here are the national park headquarters and this is the place where you can stay overnight if you wish to. What you certainly have to do is hike up to Pha Chan Charat Viewpoint . It provides a sensational view of the islands with blue waters and green forests all around. The hike up is very steep and sweaty, especially under the hot sun but it’s totally doable for most people. Take your time and stop at other viewpoints along the way. The return trip should take about 1 hour.

Ang Thong National Marine Park in Thailand

Once I got down, I still had some time to enjoy the wonderful beach and chill in the hammock. At the agreed time, the captain called me to return to the boat and we started our return journey to Koh Phangan with the sun slowly setting. We arrived shortly after 6 PM and were dropped off at our hotels.

Overall, it was a great day and the whole trip was organized nicely. The food was good, the crew was incredibly friendly and the views in the national park impressed me a lot. The only negative side was the speed of the boat, which was really slow and we spent plenty of time travelling to and from Ang Thong National Marine Park. If the boat had been faster, we would have had more time to spend in the park.

Ang thong was declared a protected area in 1982.

The park’s name, « Ang Thong, » means « golden bassin » in Thai, and it is said to have been given the name because of the sparkling golden sands on the beaches of some of the islands.

Ang Thong National Marine Park: The Best Koh Samui Day Trip You Can’t Afford to Miss

Ang Thong Marine National Park in Thailand with text overlay

Set sail aboard a luxury yacht to a stunning archipelago of 42 islands in the Gulf of Thailand

Located 40 kilometres or so from Koh Samui in Thailand is an archipelago of 42 islands covering 102 square kilometres. Together, the islands and surrounding waters form Ang Thong Marine National Park, which was designated a national park in 1980. The landscape is somewhat reminiscent of Vietnam’s Halong Bay with towering limestone karsts, a number of scenic viewpoints and pristine snorkeling spots.

A day trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park (AKA Angthong National Marine Park) from Koh Samui is a must-do in my books – spend the day cruising, snorkeling, kayaking and taking in the unfettered nature and marine life. Make sure you add it to your Thailand itinerary ! The best way to travel to Ang Thong Marine National Park is by booking yourself onto a day cruise – but the question is, which one?

There are dozens and dozens of boat operators in Koh Samui, all at varying price points and with slightly different Ang Thong Marine National Park day trip itineraries. After reading through hundreds of reviews, we decided to book the semi-private Ang Thong National Marine Park tour on the Blue Dragon boat with Tours Koh Samui .

Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

Though the price was slightly higher than some other companies, the boat looked much newer, the company limits the number of people on-board, and the trip was consistently rated highly for safety and service. Here’s what to expect from a perfect day trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park!

Planning a trip to Thailand and need some ideas on where to go and what to see? Check out my 10 day Thailand itinerary here.

Where to stay in Koh Samui

Waimarie Ville in Lipa Noi Koh Samui Thailand

I usually stay at Villa Waimarie in Lipa Noi – it is my family’s timeshare property and is on one of the most pristine and uncrowded beaches in Koh Samui. The beachfront villa has 6 bedrooms, a tennis court, an indoor and outdoor lounge area, pool and amazing kitchen. You can even see the Ang Thong National Park beckoning in the distance!

It’s a fantastic luxury villa in Koh Samui to book if you have a large group of people, and serves up the most incredible Thai food. Click here to check availability and rates for Villa Waimarie , or click here to see other highly rated hotels in Koh Samui!

What to bring to Ang Thong Marine National Park

  • Sun screen (reef-safe if you have it)
  • Camera and waterproof cover/bag for your phone if you have one (for kayaking)
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Shoes that you don’t mind getting wet like flip flops or sandals
  • Anti-sea sickness tablets (the boat company has some if you forget)
  • Cash for the tour balance payment and 300 Baht per person for the national park entrance fee
Heading to Koh Samui? Make sure you check out the Koh Samui Elephant Sanctuary – a park that rescues elephants from riding camps, circuses and street begging!

1. 8:30 – 9:20 AM – Transfer from your hotel to the pier

Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

The pick up time will depend on where your hotel is located. The tour company sends a luxury van to pick up its guests and can coordinate with your hotel on timing. Unlike many other companies, the pick up time is slightly later in the morning which is great for sleeping in.

2. Sail toward Ang Thong Marine National Park

Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

Lie back and enjoy a leisurely cruise towards Ang Thong Marine National Park. It will take approximately an hour to get there from Koh Samui.

3. Go snorkeling at Koh Wao

Snorkeling in Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

The Dragon yachts are the only non-speedboat vessels to reach this destination as part of a tour to the park. Koh Wao is located in the most northern part of the park and because we departed later than the others, it means that we arrived once everyone else had already left, so we got to snorkel in this beautiful aquamarine bay all by ourselves!

Snorkeling in Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

Get fitted for snorkels and flippers and check out the underwater life – we saw plenty of fish, sea urchins and even some small (non-deadly) jellyfish.

You’re required to either wear a life jacket or tie one to you so that you’re visible to other arriving boats (though no other boats came while we were there) for your own safety.

4. Lunch time

Food on the Blue Dragon yacht in Koh Samui

Feast on delicious Thai food as you sail towards the heart of the marine national park. There are vegetarian options as well as meat dishes. The green curry and chicken satay were to die for, and it’s amazing what the chef was able to conjure up in the small kitchen on board.

While you’re sailing, sit back, relax and take in this outrageous view of Ang Thong Marine National Park.

5. Kayaking

Kayaking in Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

I’m not a massive fan of kayaking (nor am I any good at it), but this is hands down one of the coolest experiences ever. Together with our guide, we kayaked our way along the coastline of several islands and limestone karsts, into small cave areas and even a hidden lake surrounded by limestone.

Unfortunately I didn’t bring my phone with me so didn’t capture any photos, but our guide snapped a few shots of the group.

6. Head to Koh Mae Ko to see the Emerald Lake and viewpoint

Koh Mae Ko view point in Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

Ready for a little bit of uphill climbing? Transfer to a smaller boat to get to Koh Mae Ko, a small island in the Ang Thong National Marine Park with an emerald lake that is connected to the sea though caves. You’re not allowed to dive or snorkel in this lake, which means it’s remained absolutely untouched – you won’t believe the colour until you see it in person!

Emerald Lake in Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

Make your way up several flights of steep metal stairs to take you to the view point over the lake, and you have the option of circling back to the pier or heading down another few flights of stairs to get closer to the lake itself.

7. Cruise back to Koh Samui and enjoy the sunset

Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

Alas, all good things must come to an end! As you sail back to Koh Samui, grab a beer (costs extra) and chill out on a bean bag or in the jacuzzi. Yes – the boat has a jacuzzi that fills up with salt water from the ocean, how cool is that?!

Once you arrive back in Koh Samui at around 6 PM the van will take you back to your hotel.

The Blue Dragon yacht in Koh Samui

Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

If you’re researching tour companies for a day trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park, you might notice that there are tons of budget options. Here’s the thing – the cheaper Angthong National Marine Park tours from Koh Samui tend to travel via speedboat which isn’t exactly the most comfortable mode of transport, and these tours tend to pack people into the boat.

Blue Dragon yacht Koh Samui Thailand

This is not a crazy party boat, and most of the passengers were couples or families who were after a semi-private and more luxurious sailing experience. Some lounge/chill out music is played on board, but the music isn’t blasted loudly. There is also wifi if you want to stay connected, as well as a clean toilet and shower hose.

If you want a laid back day cruise, your best bet is to go with the Blue Dragon boat which limits the number of passengers on board (8-14 people maximum). Because the schedule is slightly different to the other tour companies, this means that you avoid the crowds at each stop. In fact, we were one of the only two groups at Koh Mae Ko when we visited the emerald lake; other groups often have to queue in order to see it! The boat is also available for private charter if you prefer an even more intimate sailing experience.

Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

Just a minor note: the semi-private Ang Thong National Marine Park tour does not stop at Wua Ta Lap, which is home to the view point that you see in most photos of Ang Thong Marine National Park. Even so, the view point at Koh Mae Ko is pretty spectacular and Wua Ta Lap was worth skipping as we still had a fabulous day away from the hordes of other boats and people visiting Ang Thong Marine National Park.

The service on board is exceptional, and our guide, York, and the rest of the team took care of us from beginning to end while ensuring our safety. Tips are appreciated but not compulsory at the end of your trip, and we never felt pressured to leave one (though we did because it was an amazing day).

Koh Samui sunset

After the trip, Tours Koh Samui will e-mail you and you can opt to leave a review on Facebook or TripAdvisor – in return, you get access to a photo album online with photos taken by the guide while you were snorkeling and kayaking! Pretty genius, IMHO.

How to book a day trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park from Koh Samui

Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

The semi-private boat trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park costs 3,900 Baht per person (US$110) and can be booked online here . You pay a small deposit online to guarantee your spot, and the remainder is paid in cash on the day.

On first glance this can seem expensive, but when you think about it you are paying for a full day (8+ hours) aboard a pretty slick yacht, and this fee also includes the hotel transfer, towels, lunch, snorkeling equipment, wifi, insurance, guide and soft drinks. You can purchase beer and cocktails on board at an extra cost.

Ang Thong Marine National Park near Koh Samui in Thailand

Kayaking is an extra 250 Baht per person (100% worth it) and entrance to the park is 300 Baht per adult. If for some reason you don’t want to pay the deposit online or the online payment system doesn’t work, just give them a call and they can process your credit card deposit payment over the phone.

You should aim to book a week or two in advance, or even earlier if you’re visiting during the peak season (December to March).

Customer Reviews

All was perfect We spent an amazing day on a boat Highly recommended!

The tour was perfect. It's totally worth it. We had the chance to be alone in the 2 first spots. Spectacular place. Dream beaches. Wonderful guides, helping our 4yo son every time it was needed. Highly recommended!

We experienced an unforgettable daytrip with amazing tourguides. The private island they brought us to was astouning and also on the mother island they were very helpfull. We requested for a halal lunch and they arranged a seperate meal for us. We were traveling with an elderly woman and two small children and the guides were constantly helping us to carry the children or give a helping hand to the elderly woman. I would definitely recommand the private boat because it gives your family all the attention needed for the trip.

Wunderschöner Ausflug, eine atemberaubende Landschaft, ein ganz toller Tag, der mir noch lange in Erinnerung bleiben wird, und ein Lob für den Service, der mich pünktlich von meinem Hotel abgeholt hat.

Well done tour, very great landscape, great service, i had a great tour :-)

Angthong National Marine Park Tour Thailand

On my trip to Thailand, I took an amazing Angthong National Marine Park tour and discovered this incredible island archipelago not far from Koh Samui.

Angthong National Marine Park is an archipelago of 42 islands that are home to a series of bays, pristine beaches, lagoons and caves in the Gulf of Thailand .

It is easily reachable from the tourist islands of Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan and makes an excellent day trip, though a day is not nearly enough time in this paradise.

Taking an Angthong Marine Park tour is one of the best things to do in Thailand for lovers of pristine nature and idyllic wilderness.

Boring stuff: I have visited each of the places I recommend and give you my honest opinion, warts and all. All photos are my own unless otherwise stated and may not be reproduced without permission. Affiliate links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

3. Take in the Views from the Viewing Platform

There is a viewing platform at 500 metres with sweeping, panoramic views across the marine park. It’s a tough climb, especially in the heat of the day, and takes 30 to 40 minutes.

4. Explore Bua Boke Cave

Hike the one-kilometre Bua Boke Natural Trail to see the amazing stalactites and stalagmites in this wonderous underground cavern.

5. Go Sea Kayaking

Most tours of the islands include a kayaking option where you can navigate the shores and otherwise inaccessible caves and coves of Ang Thong. Highly recommended! You can also hire a kayak from the visitor centre on Ko Wau Ta Lap.

6. Koh Mae Koh Island

Pristine Beach at Koh Mae Koh

There are six beaches on Koh Mae Koh which are connected by a series of trails. If you leave the main beach where the visitor centre is it’s entirely possible you can have one of the others to yourself as the tourists on boat tours don’t head to these others.

The crystal-clear water of Koh Mae’s beaches is perfect for snorkelling and equipment can be borrowed on-site.

7. See Beautiful Talay Nai (Emerald Lake)

Emerald Lake (Blue Lagoon)

The Emerald Lake, also know as the Blue Lagoon, is a large lake a few hundred metres from the main beach and visitor centre on Koh Mae Koh. This is one of the highlights of an Angthong National Marine Park tour and is one of Thailand’s must-see natural wonders.

There are steps up to a viewing platform and you can descend over the other side down to the lake shore where you can gaze into the translucent greeny, blue waters and spot plenty of marine life.

Check out these tips for travelling Thailand to help plan your trip.

Dangers at Angthong National Marine Park

Dangers at Angthong Marine Park

Being in the tropics, Thailand has its fair share of snakes and creepy crawlies that can pack a punch, but the biggest danger is the deadly Box Jellyfish (Chironex Feleckeri) which is known to inhabit these waters. Pay attention to local news and ask your guide and staff if there have been any sightings or stings in the area.

You can mitigate the risks by taking a few precautions such as not swimming at night, after rain and near estuaries. The best protection is a stinger suit which you can pick up on Ko Samui or order online before you go.

Sea urchins pose a threat to bare feet so be sure to bring flip-flops or reef shoes!

When is the best time to take an Angthong National Marine Park Tour?

Angthong Marine Park is closed every year from November to early December (the worst of the monsoon season). The best time to visit is late December to September. I went in August and there was the usual afternoon shower but mainly hot and sunny throughout the day.

How to get to Angthong National Marine Park from Ko Samui

Beautiful Thailand

The only way to reach the archipelago is by boat. You can take an Angthong National Marine Park tour of the island as a day trip from Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan but these tours are quite rushed.

It’s possible to arrange drop off and pick up with the tour boats and camp on Koh Wau Ta Lap (see accommodation below).

Another option is to charter a boat yourself.

Journey time by ferry from Nathong Pier , Ko Samui is approximately 2 hours. By private speedboat the journey time is less than an hour.

Accommodation at Angthong Marine Park

Angthong Beaches

It’s possible to stay overnight on Koh Wau Ta Lap. There is a small campsite and six wood cabins that can be booked only through the Thai National Parks website. Prices start at around 600 Baht ($20) per night.

Amenities on Angthong

On Koh Wau Ta Lap there is a visitor centre where you can hire kayaks and snorkelling gear. There is a campsite and six wood cabins, a small restaurant and bar.

The electric generator is turned off at 23:30 and after that there is no electricity until morning. There is no Wifi on the islands.

On Koh Mae Koh there is a small visitor centre and kiosk selling drinks and snacks.

What Should I Pack for a trip to Angthong?

As there are very few amenities on Ang Thong you should bring everything you will need for the duration of your stay.

Below is a list of recommended items to pack:

  • Sturdy Shoes for the trails
  • Food and Drink
  • Swimwear (including stinger suit)

Angthong Marine Park Day tours and trips

Day Tours Angthong Marine Park

Explore 42 tropical islands of angthong marine park.

Several speed boat operators offer daily trips from Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, along with slower boat options. Among these, we highly recommend opting for the speed boat service. Speed boat companies are conveniently stationed on Phangan Island (near Thongsala’s main piers) and on Koh Samui Island (in Bangrak, near the Seatran pier). They depart daily for Angthong National Marine Park, providing the best value for your money.

Speed boats are preferred  as they are more safe, fast, comfortable and convenience than slow boats. Travel time by speed boat from Koh Phangan to Marine Park usually takes only 45 minutes. By slow boat 2-3 hours, so with slow boats you loosing a lot of time to travel. Please also note that, slow boat can’t stop at shallow waters so every time you will need to get a long tail boat to transfer you to the beach.
