Use the Delma Island ferry which ferries between to and from the island through Jebel Dhanna.

Moreover, the island is served by Dalma Airport . Non-scheduled flights take off from Abu Dhabi International Airport every day except Friday. Dalma Airport also facilitates private jets coming in from other parts of the UAE.

History of Dalma Island, Abu Dhabi? 

During the Stone Age, the first human occupation on the island can be traced back to 7,000 years. At this time, abundant freshwater bodies attracted several traders and settlers (Bani Yas Tribe) to Dalma Island. The island had over 200 wells to supply water to Abu Dhabi until the 1950s. The main occupation of the people of the Bani Yas Tribe was pearl diving and fishing. The archaeologists have found shreds of evidence of Ubaid pottery from Mesopotamia, several stone tools, charred date stones, and animal remains, giving a deep dive into the lives of people living on Dalma Island during the Stone Age. There were around 20 archaeological sites found on the island. 

In the present time, Dalma Island is a beautified location home to old architectural structures like mosques and residences constructed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The island is still known for pearl diving and trading. In 1880, when the pearl trade was at its apex, Dalma Island was crowded with markets.

Al Muraikhi House

The Al Muraikhi House belongs to the late Mohammed Bin Jassim Al-Muraikhi. He was one of the largest pearl traders in the Gulf region. The fort-like house is among the most reputed landmarks in Dalma Island and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Al Muraikhi House is a testament to Emirati hospitality and honors the relationship between sailors and pearl and textile traders. The house is a significant venue for the merchants and traders involved in pearl trading. If traders found their way into neighboring countries, Al Muraikhi House was always on their itinerary. The Meeting Room in this house paved the way for pearl trading for many merchants. It has two floors. There are several smaller rooms and one big meeting room. 

The Muraikhi House was converted into a museum. The museum is filled with precious historical artifacts pertaining to the Bani Yas tribe and what foreign traders would have left.

Mosques on Dalma Island are a center of attraction. Al Muraykhi, Al Dawsari and Al Muhannadi Mosques are famous on Dalma Island. Each of these mosques is an example of impeccable Persian architecture. 

Al Muraikhi Mosque

Muhammad bin Jasim Al Muraykhi built Al Muraikhi Mosque between the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is made of beach stone and coral and is covered in gypsum plaster. The mosque has a high level of craftsmanship in plaster decorating its windows, columns, doors, and ceiling cornices.

Al Dawsari Mosque

Al Dawsari Mosque was built by Rashid bin Fahd Al Dossari in 1931. It has a flat roof on the prayer hall constructed from mangrove poles and palm matting, with woven reeds covered by gypsum plaster. The mosque also has a mihrab (a niche in the wall indicating the direction of Mecca) and a minbar (a platform where the imam addresses the congregation).

Al Muhannadi Mosque

Al Muhannadi Mosque was built by Saeed Ali Al Muhannadi in 1946. It is the only mosque with a mihrab and minbar incorporated into a single structure. The mosque also has a high level of craftsmanship in plaster decorating its windows, columns, doors, and ceiling cornices.

Fishing Village

Dalma Island is well known for its historical significance and the traditional fishing village that offers a glimpse into its rich maritime heritage. • About Dalma

The island belongs to Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It’s about 42 km Northwest of Al-Dhannah Mount in the sea, and about 210 km from Abu Dhabi. The area is about 33 km. From the beginning to the middle of this century, there has been reference about Dalma in the book of the British Resident in Sharjah in 1906. Here’s the text: “Dalma Island is heavily populated in the seasons of pearling…” In 1936, the new Resident wrote:” On Dalma Island lives some people of Al-Qubaisat, Al-Mazarie, Al-Muharebah and Al-Moraikhat.” About Dalma Island, some History References say (and according to Al-ittihad newspaper of Abu Dhabi) that researches proved that in the 7th century AD, there were 5 main islands surrounding what is known today as Bahrain, one of which was called “Talmon”. Around the trees of this island, the tribe of Al-Moraikhat settled and built the first (Fraig) or neighborhood that was named after Al-Moraikhat. There houses, made of palm fronds, spread around the island and their ships used to roam around the Arab Gulf in deep-diving trips searching for pearls in the seabed. (Ref.weekly Al-Ittihad newspaper, July 16th 1992-Al-Watan Encyclopedia, page 24) In the past, the island of Dalma was considered the central position of the Maritime pearling. The records mention that there were regular markets for Pearl vendors, who came from the ends of the globe such as India. One of the groups of buildings of the 19th century that was recently renovated includes the house of a famous pearl merchant from the family of Al-Moraikhy. Ceramics (shards of pottery dating back to the early Islamic era) were found during the restoration of the foundations of a nearby mosque. The link between a historical building and the variables and events that have passed on the island of Dalma in particular and the UAE in general makes us deal with this place not only in terms of being an impact, or legacy, but also as a record dating to the stage of an important signaling, with its semantics to the economic, historical and political roles of Dalma Island. The most important factor which leads us to reflect the interest in this position in the complex equation that has been achieved and exhibited in the Umayyad architectural style, which emphasizes the importance of the island and its relations with its neighbors, but not with the old countries affected and influenced by. This geographical distance from the Levant overtures and certainly commercial and political relations, not only back to the reign of the Umayyad to the past, but is thousands of years and the excavations and archaeological assets of the shops and industries, indicating and supporting these facts with evidence.

The description included the most important views that have been said in the description of Dalma Island. One of these opinions was mentioned in a book entitled “The guide” by Captain Rashid Bin Fadel Al-banghali, describing it as a large island with footnotes in the south and east and water and landing area for Arabs that used to be crowded and busy at times of diving and a pearl market was set up over about a mile from Dalma towards the course of Sir Bani Yass. There is another description in the same reference “Dalma Island”: “It is a large island, having footnotes in the south and the east, where there was fresh water and homes of Arab residents. It was crowded longer in the season of diving for pearls and the Pearl Market was held”. Another description of the island was stated in the second edition of the book by Professor Mohammad Ali who describes Dalma saying: “The northern part consists of flat- topped hills the highest of which rises by ten meters, while the southern part is low and sandy and ends, as usual for all the islands, with a sandy tongue in the southern tip. Dalma is an island where there are permanent houses and is located on the southwest coast. Another description is in the book and “Mesopotamia” by Professor Ahmed Abdul Baqi that describes the island of being as famous for growing palm trees, vegetables and fruits and as a center of pearls fishing and trading, as well as catching fishes and exporting them to all the Emirates. There’s also a description of the island by the poet Sultan bin Ali Al-rafssa from Abu Dhabi describing the island of Dalma as having a rich history along ages and that it owes most of its recent fame to Sheikh Zayed who changed it into a glorious paradise with gardens of fruits and lovely flowers for those who look for beauty and peace. دلـمـا لــــــهـا شــــــانٍ وعِتــــبَــــار            عـــنـــد الـذي بــــــه حس وشعـــور اسم لــــها شايــــع في الأقـطار                  يشـــهـــــد لــــها تــاريـــخ وعصــور والــيــوم دلـمـا تشــع بأنـــــــوار               وطول الدهر ما تشــــــــــكي قصـــور من فضل ياللـــــي عمّــــــر الدار                 نــــــور الوطن لــــــي قايـــــم بدور زايــــد ومــــن مــثــله فــلا صار                 في الــــمجد لـــه حكمــه ودســــتور تـــــــحــــوّلت جـــنــــات وأنــهــــار              وتـــزخــــرفت فـيـــــلاّت وقصور وكل من لفاها يجني اثمار                            ويشم ريـــــــح الـــــفـــل وزهـــــور

Abu Dhabi's Dalma Island a tourism diamond in the rough

A tour of abu dhabi's last residential desert island where people are born, live and are buried..

It is a place where everyone knows your name. Within an hour of landing on this round, key-shaped island about 42 kilometres north-west of Jebel Dhannah in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, the residents of Dalma Island will know about you and want to show you around the last residential desert island of Abu Dhabi - where people are born, live, work, study and are eventually laid to rest. Historically known for its pearl trading and diving, there is a legend of a buried treasure somewhere on the island, where sacks of pearls were hidden away by a "pearl pirate". There are also legends tied to a dormant volcano that is believed to have left behind a "museum of geological treasures". The island belongs to the Desert Islands of Abu Dhabi Emirate, a conglomerate of eight islands that include Sir Bani Yas and six smaller, uninhabited and environmentally protected islands. It is also a place of archaeological interest, and for this reason a private tourist operator is encouraging people to visit the tiny island. "It is the last of its kind," says Mariam Al Hosani, a 24-year-old Emirati from Dalma Island, whose family moved here from Sharjah in the 1980s. "It is quiet, it is peaceful, with clean, fresh air and clean beaches. It is perfect for those that want to escape a city life and live within a close-knit community," she says. The Al Hosani family is one of the main tribes living on the island that has a population of about 4,000, along with Al Hammadi, Al Qubaisi and Al Muraykhi. The island is about nine kilometres by six kilometres and there are many theories about the origin of its name. One theory goes that it was traditionally popular with sailors, who stopped at the island for its plentiful supplies of fresh water - "dalu ma", roughly translates to buckets or carriers of water. But before you actually get to this spot of land out in the sea that is more than 210km from Abu Dhabi island, there is a ritual that almost every Dalma resident and visitor must go through. "As the time for the ferry looms closer, you watch the port official from your car, praying for his thumbs to be directed upwards," says Al Hosani. "You are at the mercy of his thumbs. If the weather is bad, there is nothing anyone can do. We can't go back home." On Sunday afternoon, Al Hosani was with her husband, a firefighter, returning home to Dalma Island after spending a weekend in Abu Dhabi city. The National was there at the invitation of Mishka Tourism, the private operators for Dalma, to visit this "vintage island". We, along with the Al Hosani family, decided to take the white-and-red ferry, Yameela, as it allows us to take our car with us. Yameela, along with another ferry called Al Gharbia, were introduced in 2010 and each can carry more than 25 cars and 200 passengers for the price of Dh20 per person and Dh100 per car. Before these boats came into service, there were smaller ferries and private boats. The new ferry is scheduled to run between the Jebel Dhanna port and the island three times a day (9am, 1pm and 6pm from Jebel Dhanna). But that is not always the case, because of the weather. A ferry can get cancelled on short notice, much to the dismay of those who decide to use the seaway to get to the island. It takes between two-and-a-half to three hours on the E11 to drive along mainly two-lane roads from Abu Dhabi to the ferry site. There is also the option of flying out of Abu Dhabi airport with small charter planes but those, too, have limited timings and, if there are not enough passengers, the flights get cancelled - again, on short notice. Rotana Jet charges Dh200 per person one way and flies Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with a one-hour stopover at the island. "Maybe because Dalma is not that easy to reach, it makes it more special," says Al Hosani, who admits that she will move off the island with her husband when their new government house comes through in Abu Dhabi. "I am used to it, but then again, I have the option of living somewhere else. There is not much to do on the island except spend time on the beach with family." Upon arrival, I was surprised. There is no small fishing village, nor many old houses. In fact, there's not very much to do at all; it's perhaps an ideal place to retire. The island is modernised, with paved roads and new houses being built next to traditional homes - it is like a typical neighbourhood in places such as Bani Yas, Al Rahba and new Shahamah. There is just one mall - Dalma Mall - and unlike the typical mall, it has just a handful of small, unbranded shops such as a toy store, phone shop and a co-op for groceries and gadgets. Local restaurants such as Lebanon Palace and Delma Ice Cream Zone are popular hang-out places and it is not uncommon to see people with their laptops. If you are vegetarian, bring your own food; there are very limited options besides fish dishes and local restaurants may not meet everyone's hygiene standards. There is internet and mobile services all across Dalma (with the exception of 3G service) although the mobile phone network regularly switches to Qatar's as you walk around the edges of the island. There are no cinemas and only a few very basic children's playgrounds. The single hotel on the island is the Delma Motel. More than 25 years old, the motel is more like a two-storey dormitory in serious need of renovations. "We are revamping the motel to bring it up to standards - like we are adding cameras, fire exits and bringing in new furniture and repainting the whole place," says Ahmed Malallah, who has been the motel manager for the past nine years. There are 18 rooms and four chalets - or rather, four tiny houses along the beach. The motel is the biggest hurdle in the island's move towards becoming a tourism destination, with leaking washrooms, torn floor carpets and walls in need of painting. Staying with a family or on one of the much better hotels in Jebel Dhanna would be more comfortable for UAE tourists who are used to five- if not seven-star accommodation. "We rarely had any people coming before the newer and bigger ferry was introduced. It is only recently we are getting tourists from different backgrounds coming to visit the island," says the 42-year-old Emirati, who was born on Dalma and has lived there ever since. The manager warns that Dalma Island is not the "luxury" island like its neighbour, Sir Bani Yas; it is instead a "Shaabiya" - a traditional community. Indeed, there are no infinity pools, spas or giraffes roaming the island. Malallah says there are plans to build hotels and "modern facilities" but it will take time. The development of Dalma Island is part of a bigger government plan to develop Al Gharbia within the Abu Dhabi 2030 vision. "It is OK. You have all that in the city, you can come here for something different," says Malallah When not running the motel, Malallah can be found out at sea fishing. "Every kind of fish you can imagine, you can probably catch here. It is all fresh and clean fish here," he adds. Visitors can meet and interact with the fishermen who are found at their boats at the main dock or selling fish at the Dalma souq. The best parts about Dalma Island are its residents. Both the Emiratis and expats, such as Fathy Mohammed Abdullah, make it one of the friendliest places to visit. Abdullah, an Egyptian archaeologist, came over for a visit in 1993 to check out the artefacts and historical sites and never left. "I love it here. There is something beautiful in every corner of the island if you look close enough," says the 50-year-old, who lives on Dalma with his wife and six children, all of whom were born on the island at the Dalma Hospital. Abdullah works as a tour guide with Mishka Tourism and likes to take visitors around to his "geological museum" along one shore of the island. "Look at these beautiful rocks," he says, pointing out various sized and coloured quartz, iron oxide and haematite rocks. He says the island is a heaven for rock collectors. Everyone on the island knows Abdullah and welcomes whoever he brings as "new friends". "You can hike here along the hills and you can see the head of the volcano. You can chat to the locals and sip coffee against the backdrop of the sea," he says. "Pearl divers still come to this island to look for pearls. It is a blessed island and only when you come here and walk along its shores, you understand what makes it special." Walking around the lush island, meetings its people and forgetting about everyday luxuries, does leave a lasting impression on its visitors. It is also one of the few places where one can truly feel the changing seasons. But it might be a while yet before the tourist season really hits Dalma Island. Historical sites on Dalma Island - The Museum of Dalma, which includes ancient artefacts such as a collection of charred date stones dating from the late 6th to early 5th millennium BC representing some of the earliest evidence of the consumption of dates in Arabia  - Three old mosques, all about a 100 years old, belonging to renowned figures of the island. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has reopened Delma Museum following the completion of a major restoration initiative.

Located on Delma Island , 42km off the coast of Abu Dhabi, Delma Museum was built around the turn of the 20th century and was once the home and the base of commercial operations for the pearl merchant Mohammed bin Jassim Al Muraikhi.

Visitors will experience Abu Dhabi’s history, guided by a collection of objects that narrate the story of the house, the pearl trade and daily life on the island more than a century ago. Visitors will also be able to experience a majlis (reception room), a badkesh (windcatcher) – a system that captures the breeze and funnels it into the majlis and several midbasah (date presses), where dates were stacked to get date molasses.

His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, said: “Conserving and reopening Delma Museum is an important milestone in our cultural strategy for the emirate and part of our mission at DCT Abu Dhabi to preserve our cultural and historical heritage, fostering pride in our national identity and sharing Abu Dhabi’s story with the world.

“The museum will be a valuable and engaging attraction for visitors, residents and anyone who would like to learn more about Abu Dhabi’s rich and diverse history. It introduces previously unheard tales from our ancient past and shows how our ancestors lived through a collection of artefacts that delves into the rich maritime traditions and intangible heritage practices which have defined the emirate’s development.”

Delma Museum’s historic structure is of significant architectural importance as a prime example of the early coastal architecture of Abu Dhabi. From 2019 until 2021, DCT Abu Dhabi conducted regular repairs to maintain the museum while it was closed and instituted a major conservation programme to combat rising damp on the walls and floors, which is a perennial problem in buildings of this type and a major reason for the deterioration of historical buildings in the centre of the Delma community.

For the first time in Abu Dhabi, an innovative solution for this problem was implemented by successfully installing a waterproof membrane underneath the building’s floors and walls. All the building’s decorative elements were conserved using compatible mortar and plaster mixes while the surrounding landscape was redesigned. The discoveries made during the conservation project, such as traces of the original mud-mortar, also shed light on coastal building techniques.

DCT Abu Dhabi’s initiatives to safeguard and develop the rich cultural resources on Delma Island will continue in the coming years. A similar programme of conservation interventions will be undertaken to repair and restore the island’s historic mosques. Additionally, a site management plan and heritage masterplan for the Delma downtown conservation area and the island will be prepared by DCT Abu Dhabi in consultation with key stakeholders, to ensure the protection of Delma’s cultural heritage for future generations while stimulating sensitive and sustainable development. These efforts are part of Abu Dhabi’s long-term Culture and Identity Strategic Initiative.

DCT Abu Dhabi has reopened the Delma Museum following the completion of a major restoration initiative.

The Delma Museum was built around the turn of the 20 th century.

The site of the museum is on the Delma Island which is 42 kilometres off the coast of Abu Dhabi.

From 2019 until 2021, DCT Abu Dhabi conducted regular repairs to maintain the museum while it was closed. It instituted a major conservation programme to combat rising dampness on the walls and floors.

It is a perennial problem in buildings of this type. A major reason for the deterioration of historical buildings in the centre of the Delma community.

For the first time in Abu Dhabi, an innovative solution for this problem was implemented by successfully installing a waterproof membrane underneath the building’s floors and walls.

All the building’s decorative elements were conserved using compatible mortar and plaster mixes while the surrounding landscape was redesigned.

The discoveries made during the conservation project, such as traces of the original mud mortar, also shed light on coastal building techniques.

DCT Abu Dhabi’s initiatives to safeguard and develop the rich cultural resources on Delma Island will continue in the coming years.

A similar programme of conservation interventions will be undertaken to repair and restore the island’s historic mosques.

Additionally, DCT Abu Dhabi will prepare a site management plan and heritage masterplan for the Delma downtown conservation area and the island.

It is in consultation with key stakeholders, to ensure the protection of Delma’s cultural heritage for future generations. It is also for stimulating sensitive and sustainable development.

These efforts are part of Abu Dhabi’s long-term Culture and Identity Strategic Initiative.
