Spotted owl butterfly

Butterflies! They taste with their feet and have a suction tube for a mouth. Their eyes have thousands of lenses and see flowers in ultraviolet light. During their lives, each butterfly transforms from caterpillar to pupa to fluttering adult.

As butterflies deserve recognition, we’ve created a special experience in their honor. Butterfly Jungle is an annual springtime celebration at the Safari Park.

Each spring during our Butterfly Jungle special experience, the Safari Park's Hidden Jungle becomes a habitat for thousands of colorful butterflies. Inside this rainforest greenhouse, Butterfly Jungle Safari participants can see—and stroll among—many varieties of butterflies.

Preparation for this event starts months in advance. We import the butterflies while they’re still pupae, from butterfly farms in Central and South America.

Our habitat is not intended to keep an ongoing population of butterflies. We don’t include host plants, and the butterflies don’t lay eggs. Most adult butterflies live less than a month, so many of our butterflies complete their lives naturally.

Flutter by a beautiful ‘Butterfly Jungle Safari' at San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Roam "a world of color" and learn about these enchanting insects at the escondido animal park., by alysia gray painter • published february 23, 2024 • updated on march 16, 2024 at 4:33 pm, what to know.

  • Butterfly Jungle Safari tickets go on sale the week of Feb. 26, 2024

  • $15 per person (ages 1 and up); admission to San Diego Zoo Safari Park is separately priced and is required

THE FABULOUS FLYERS... that whimsically wing their way through an ethereal aviary at San Diego Zoo Safari Park each spring boast names that sound as if they hail straight from a magical poem: There's the Orange Julia (the butterfly's bright hue backs up this marvelous moniker), the Zebra Longwing (stripes do add visual razzmatazz), and the Paper Kite (a complex pattern lends this little critter so much loveliness). Really, though, there are no prosaic labels in the realm of butterflydom, for each butterfly wears their hallowed handle as lightly as they land upon a leaf. If you're ready for a season that is inherently woven through with poetic moments — that would be soft and sweet springtime, of course — then you're likely ready to join the Butterfly Jungle Safari , which alights in Escondido around mid-March, fluttering for a nearly two-month engagement in the Hidden Jungle.

EVEN THE FLOWERS... have fanciful names in the aviary — you may come across wallflowers and pincushions, if you keep your peepers peeled — but it isn't all about being under a storybook-like spell. The amazing science behind how butterflies pollinate, and the important roles they play in the natural world, will also be front-and-centered during the popular event. It's an experience that runs for a tantalizing 20 minutes, and snapping pictures is what plenty of visitors do, though some come just to bask in the beauty. Note that your $15 ticket doesn't also include admission to Safari Park; that is separately priced, so be sure to book both if you plan to soar by this seasonal safari, a favorite of flutterby, er, butterfly fans near and far.

Someday I'll Learn

Butterfly Jungle and the San Diego Safari Park

Chelsea Day | Apr 30, 2019 Mar 30, 2019 | Travel Blog

We visited the limited-time annual Butterfly Jungle exhibit at the San Diego Safari Park! Here's what to expect, how to optimize your visit, and what else to see while you're at the park.

Butterfly Jungle is Seasonal

Every spring, starting around March, butterflies fill the San Diego area right in line with the timing of Southern California's super bloom. To capitalize on the sudden surge of interest and help educate the public, the San Diego Safari Park opens the specially-created Butterfly Jungle exhibit.

What is Butterfly Jungle?

Butterfly Jungle is a widely-anticipated greenhouse setup with thousands of butterflies of all shapes and sizes. At the Safari Park, Butterfly Jungle is setup in the area of the park usually called the Hidden Jungle. This lush, rainforest setting is the perfect backdrop for your butterfly exploration.

How do you Visit?

Butterfly Jungle is included with the price of admission to San Diego Safari Park – although you CAN pay an extra fee to skip the line.

Priority Viewing Tickets

These “Priority Viewing Tickets” are available for purchase right before the Butterly Jungle entrance at Nairobi Village. There are a ton of San Diego Safari Park staff around to help guide you. The Priority Viewing Tickets don't give you any sort of special seating within Butterfly Jungle – they merely get you in faster. Whether or not the Priority Viewing Tickets are worth purchasing will completely depend on the crowds when you visit. We went on opening day of Butterfly Jungle and it was exceptionally busy, with wait time for the exhibit topping two and a half hours.

There is also a special two hour Behind-the-Scenes Safari where guides let participants skip the line and give an up-close tour of the Butterfly Jungle and share insider knowledge about fruit bats and lorikeets. Those special tours must be booked in advance on the San Diego Safari Park website .

Also on the website, you'll find special breakfast and dinner events that allow intimate access to Butterly Jungle, up-close viewings and unique access to butterfly experts. Those are on specific dates, with reservations and sales being handled online.

Worth noting is that there are NO strollers allowed in Butterfly Jungle ( unless your stroller is used as a wheelchair ). You will be asked to park your stroller before entering the Butterfly Jungle line, so it's a good idea to bring a carrier or baby wrap if you have a squirmy little one, toddlers or preschoolers who tend to dart away.

How to Maximize your Visit

There are some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your visit to Butterfly Jungle and San Diego Safari Park.

happy boy with yellow accessory

What to Wear

Wearing bright colors will help the butterflies notice and be drawn to you! Our son clipped a yellow emoji accessory to his shirt, and the butterflies seemed to like him a lot. Colors that they didn't seem as fond of include blue, red and green. People wearing pink or salmon-colored shirts were being swarmed the day we went!

Little cups of watermelon bits are sold right outside the Butterfly Jungle entrance. If you buy Priority Viewing Tickets, it's easy to miss the booth that sells these, so make sure to ask the park employees where to get your watermelon! Butterflies love watermelon and are more likely to land on you if you are holding a cup. If you don't want to purchase watermelon bits, a smart idea is to make a bee-line to the Butterfly Jungle exit after you get in, and see if people leaving would be willing to give you their used cups. The butterflies land on the watermelon pieces but don't actually consume them in any visibly noticeable way, so it's smart to conserve by asking for used cups. Once inside the Butterfly Jungle greenhouse, you're free to walk from the entry area to the exit area and back as long as you don't step out of the doors, so you won't be missing anything by taking this approach.

butterfly with camera

Picture Time

Be sure to take a high-quality camera with a macro-capable lens to get up-close photos of the butterflies. The “Live Focus” and “Pro” features on our phone cameras were helpful as well. You should definitely take a buddy, so they can capture pictures of you when the butterflies land! Remember: it's important to hold very, very still so that the butterflies aren't scared off.

butterfly jungle

Get Involved Beyond your Butterfly Jungle Visit

There are special search-and-find pamphlets handed out by zoo staff to help you identify different types of butterflies. This is a great way to keep kids busy in line and keep them engaged while they're in the Butterfly Jungle. You can even access the butterfly I.D. guide on the San Diego Safari Park website ahead of time to get the whole family excited.

There's also a butterfly jungle Instagram contest happening this season. Share your butterfly jungle photos on Instagram with hashtag #ButterflyJungle for your chance to win a flightline safari for four people!

San Diego Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo

One thing worth nothing is that San Diego Safari Park is run by the San Diego Zoo, but it is in a whole separate location. Technically called the “San Diego Zoo Safari Park,” the Safari Park is in north county San Diego, in a town called Escondido. This is about 40 minutes north of the San Diego Zoo's main Balboa Park location .

San Diego Safari Park Favorites

As you exit the Butterfly Jungle, you'll go through a series of several enclosed spaces just as you did when you enter. This is so no butterflies escape! Park employees will be carefully looking you over and even swabbing in and around bags with what looks like a big duster to shake out any sneaky butterflies.

scary bird in zoo

Don't miss the amazing birds hanging out in the first exit space. These are one of our favorite creatures to visit at the San Diego Safari Park, and the Hidden Jungle is their usual hangout.

Also among our San Diego Safari Park favorites are the playground area ( near Nairobi Village where the food is, just a short walk from Butterfly Jungle ), the Cheetah Run, Balloon Safari ( we like to watch this giant balloon go up and down ), Savanna Cool Zone when it's hot out and the infamous must-do Africa Tram. It's a bit of a hike on the other side of the park to get to the Tiger Trail, but that's well worth the experience as well.

Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park!

Butterfly Jungle is our favorite time to visit the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Every Spring guests from around the world visit the Safari Park located in North County San Diego to see hundreds of beautiful butterflies for this special event. Butterfly Jungle is free with your park admission. Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is going to look a little different in 2020. Covid 19 could not keep us from enjoying butterflies, but it is a bit different.  Check out pictures from our past trips to visit the gorgeous butterflies and flowers below.

butterfly-jungle

San Diego Zoo Global just launched a new online Butterfly Cam . Butterfly Jungle fans can now enjoy livestream footage from inside the San Diego Zoo’s Hidden Jungle greenhouse, where around 30 species of butterflies (like zebra longwings, giant swallowtails and blue morphos) flit and feed. These butterflies actually came to the Safari Park in the pupae stage from sustainable butterfly farms in Central, South, and North America to help promote conservation of the rain forest habitats where the farms are located. Online viewers can see some of the thousands of colorful, eye-catching butterflies as they flutter lightly through the warm air to find nectar-filled flowers, or catch of glimpse of up to 22 exotic bird species—including the critically endangered Bali myna and blue-crowned laughingthrush that reside inside the aviary, among the lush greenery.

This DIY  butterfly garden project for your yard or balcony to help feed butterflies from the comfort of your home is a great family activity inspired by the San Diego Zoo.

While this year is a little different than year’s past, we can all still enjoy the beautiful butterflies while we shelter in place.  Thank you to the folks at the San Diego Zoo for making sure we all get to see the butterflies while safely social distancing.

Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Years Past

Butterfly Jungle is back at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park! Butterfly Jungle opened March 23rd and will only be at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park through May 12th.  Our family loves the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and this is truly our favorite time of year!  Butterfly Jungle gives visitors the opportunity to see hundreds of butterflies up close and personal.  Our kids delayed homeschool a bit on Friday morning for the preview of Butterfly Jungle. While we were there the kids learned so much by being up close and personal with dozens of species of butterflies. It was thrilling for them to be in a place where butterflies would literally land right on them.  It is always fun and I dare say a bit magical for us to visit the butterflies at Butterfly Jungle. Butterfly Jungle is extremely popular and only lasts a short time.  The Butterfly Jungle exhibit is included with your park admission or annual membership pass at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

butterfly

Butterfly Jungle is free with your annual pass or your one day park admission. The lines can get long. Priority tickets can be purchased to avoid the line. You can also purchase Butterfly treats to help encourage a butterfly or two to land on you. We have been several years and only once did we purchase a treat for the butterflies.  Every single year we have several land on us. The key to have a butterfly land on you is simply to be still and patient.

butterflies-like-yellow

Hot tips if you are planning on visiting the butterflies!

  • Wear bright colors – butterflies are attracted to bright colors – we have always had great luck with yellow
  • Wear a pretty hair clip in your hair – they are suckers for flowers (even the fake ones!)
  • Stand in the light – they seem to like not only bright colors but also bright colors in the light
  • Stand still and it is more likely a little butterfly will land on you than if you are moving about
  • Please watch where you step  – There are SO many butterflies at Butterfly Jungle they sometimes land on the ground
  • Do not pick up the butterflies – if you are patient they will come to you eventually – but you can hurt them by picking them up

nature (2)

Our family loves the San Diego Zoo Safari Park – so much so that it is the park we are purchasing year passes to this year (we only purchase annual passes to one park per year – if any at all – this year it is the Zoo and Safari Park!).  We know the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park do so much in the way of conservation and we know they love and respect the animals in their care. If you are planning a trip to San Diego I highly suggest taking a day to see the lovely San Diego Zoo Safari Park! If you are going before April 10th make sure to get there early to see all the amazing wildlife and nature exhibits, but especially the butterflies!

pretty

The lines can get long at Butterfly Jungle and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has a great option to save you time.  Inquire at Lorikeet Landing about reserving a viewing time for a fee (go early – they sell out almost every day and fairly early).

holding-a-butterfly

When you visit, make sure to use the hashtag #ButterflyJungle on Instagram for your chance to win an awesome San Diego Zoo Safari Park experience for four.  Discount tickets for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are sometimes available from our partner, Groupon!  Currently, Groupon tickets to the SD Zoo Safari Park are not discounted, but it still will save you time.  The ticket booth can be a long wait, when you buy online you get to go straight to the turn style!

Butterfly Jungle is presented in partnership with Wheelhouse Credit Union.

“Butterfly Jungle features thousands of colorful butterflies floating and fluttering throughout the Butterfly Jungle aviary, where guests can also see many species of birds, lush greenery and flowers.

More than 20 butterfly species will be highlighted this year, from Central, South and North America—including the zebra longwing, orange-barred tiger, Grecian shoemaker, giant swallowtail and blue morpho. Guests are encouraged to wear bright colors to attract the butterflies as they walk among exotic beauties of all colors, shapes and sizes, take photos and learn more about these winged wonders .”

Butterfly Jungle Opens at San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Annual Spring Event, Presented by San Diego METRO Credit Union, Takes Place March 11–April 23

Thousands of butterflies floated and fluttered around the Hidden Jungle aviary at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park this morning (March 10, 2017), as children and adults alike marveled at these delicate winged insects. The invited guests were treated to a sneak peek of the Safari Park’s annual springtime event, Butterfly Jungle presented by San Diego METRO Credit Union , which opens Saturday, March 11 and runs through April 23.

At Butterfly Jungle, the walk-through Hidden Jungle aviary has been transformed into a temporary home for between 20 and 30 species of butterflies. As guests walk through this rain forest habitat, the colorful, eye-catching creatures surround them, fluttering lightly through the warm air to find nectar-filled flowers to feed upon. The aviary is also home to lush greenery and many species of exotic birds.

The butterflies come to the Safari Park in the pupae stage from farms in Central, South and North America. Upon arrival, animal care staff sort and count every pupa in a humidity- and climate-controlled room, before carefully placing them into a secure hatching box. When each pupa emerges from its chrysalis, they are taken to the aviary for release. The vivid-hued butterflies not only enchant guests, but also make ecological sense. “People coming here to see these beautiful creatures also support our work to conserve butterflies at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, as well as support sustainable butterfly farming,” stated Don Sterner, animal care manager, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “If they weren’t harvesting butterflies, many of these farmers would clear-cut their land and plant crops or raise cattle. Instead, when they harvest butterflies, they leave the land in its pristine state.”

Butterfly Jungle kicks off tomorrow! ? Share your memories on Instagram with #ButterflyJungle for a chance to win a Roar and Snore Safari for 2. #Butterfly Jungle presented by San Diego METRO Credit Union starts tomorrow and goes until April 23. Flutter on over! #sdzSafariPark A post shared by San Diego Zoo Safari Park (@sdzsafaripark) on Mar 10, 2017 at 12:44pm PST

The species of butterflies highlighted during this year’s Butterfly Jungle include the zebra longwing, orange-barred tiger, Grecian shoemaker, monarch, giant swallowtail and blue morpho.

Guests at Butterfly Jungle are encouraged to wear bright colors and move slowly, to increase the chances of butterflies landing on their clothes or hats. When the insects do land, guests should enjoy the close encounter but shouldn’t touch, because they could harm these delicate fliers.

Safari Park guests can enjoy Butterfly Jungle daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The popular event is included with Safari Park admission.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Butterfly Jungle Opens Tomorrow: March 23, 2019

Annual Spring Event, Presented by Wheelhouse Credit Union, Runs Through May 12

Thousands of butterflies floated and fluttered around the Butterfly Jungle aviary at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park this morning (March 22, 2019), as invited guests were treated to a sneak preview of the Safari Park’s annual springtime event—Butterfly Jungle presented by Wheelhouse Credit Union—which opens Saturday, March 23 and runs through Sunday, May 12. Safari Park guests can enjoy Butterfly Jungle daily. The popular event is included with Safari Park admission.

At Butterfly Jungle, the walk-through Butterfly Jungle aviary has been transformed into a temporary home for over 30 species of butterflies. As guests walk through this rain forest habitat, thousands of colorful, eye-catching creatures surround them, fluttering lightly through the warm air to find nectar-filled flowers to feed upon. The aviary is also home to lush greenery and 18 species of exotic birds.

This event not only brings delight to the guests that visit, but also brings awareness to the plight of declining butterfly populations all over the world—as well as our local butterfly populations here in San Diego. Butterflies play an important role in their environment as pollinators for native plant species. During the Butterfly Jungle event, San Diego area residents can learn how they can help local butterfly populations by including plants in their gardens that help support all stages of a butterfly’s life—from egg to caterpillar to adulthood. Selecting specific plants that attract butterflies will encourage them to hang out in a home garden throughout all of their life stages, providing hours of backyard viewing pleasure.

By visiting Butterfly Jungle, guests help support San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s efforts to conserve butterflies, as well as supporting sustainable butterfly farming. If the farmers in Central, South and North America that supply the butterfly pupae weren’t raising butterflies, they might be clear-cutting their land to plant crops or raise cattle. Instead, when they raise butterflies, they leave the land in its pristine state and allow butterfly populations to thrive.

Guests at Butterfly Jungle are encouraged to wear bright colors and move slowly, to increase the chances of butterflies landing on their clothes or hats. When the insects do land, guests should enjoy the close encounter but shouldn’t touch, because they could harm these delicate fliers.

Guests who want a special opportunity to visit the butterfly aviary before it opens to the public can book a Butterflies and Friends Behind-the-Scenes Safari. This two-hour walking tour begins at 8 a.m. on select days; pre-purchased reservations are required and space is limited.  This tour also includes early access to baths and lorikeets, as well as a special animal presentation with flighted species.   To find out more or make a reservation, call our reservation line at 619-718-3000. Priority butterfly viewing is available for an additional fee, with tickets available daily beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Lorikeet Landing booth.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park At the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, more than 1 million guests each year see animals in herds of mixed species, in expansive habitats. Safari tours offer savanna views of African and Asian animals, trails take visitors on treks to experience Australian and North American habitats—plus, there are opportunities for up-close encounters and unique behind-the-scenes perspectives. Known for its leadership in rhino conservation, the Safari Park is home to the Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center, which is devoted to groundbreaking work to bring back the northern white rhino. As visitors discover the rare and endangered species at the Safari Park, they are directly contributing, through admission and on-grounds sales, to the efforts of San Diego Zoo Global, an international nonprofit conservation organization that works to fight extinction through recovery efforts for plants and animals worldwide.
