Lipa’s ‘Always Live’ show will come ahead of her broader headline Australian tour , which will see the pop star perform songs from her latest album ‘Future Nostalgia’ at venues across the country.

Tickets to Lipa’s Palais Theatre show will be available via a ballot system, and are accessible here . Registration for the ballot opens today (August 11), and closes at 5pm local time next Wednesday (August 17.) Head here for more tour and ticketing information.

After the Palais performance, Lipa’s ‘Future Nostalgia’ tour will include a separate show in Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, alongside additional dates throughout November in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth.

The Palais Theatre show is presented by Live Nation and the Always Live initiative, the latter of which was formed by the Victorian government this year to boost the state’s live music industry.

The initiative was kickstarted in March by the Foo Fighters ’ stadium concert appearance in Geelong, and has since spearheaded a slew of music events including the  Melbourne leg  of  Khruangbin ‘s Australian tour and forthcoming Ocean Sounds festival , headlined by Tash Sultana .

Lipa’s Palais Theatre appearance adds to a swathe of additional shows included as part of Always Live’s concert series, having also organised shows for the likes of Sampa The Great and Crowded House , both of whom will take to Melbourne venues at the end of the year. Head here for Always Live’s complete music program for 2022.

Lipa’s upcoming Palais performance follows the success of ‘Future Nostalgia’ in Australia, with singles ‘Don’t Start Now’ , ‘Break My Heart’ and ‘Levitating’ all achieving ARIA-Platinum status upon their release in 2020. In a five-star review of the singer’s sophomore album, NME ’s Rhian Daly described ‘Future Nostalgia’ as “powerful pop perfection” and “a bright, bold collection of pop majesty”.

The British superstar performed her most intimate concert of the year at St Kilda’s iconic picture palace, which left concert-goers ‘Levitating .’ By Hayley Peppin

dua lipa tour melbourne

TO SAY the Queen of England “captivated” an intimate crowd last night in Melbourne, would be to put it lightly. And for the music record — we’re not talking about Camilla Parker-Bowles .

Dua Lipa has been reigning the music world for the past few years now but it didn’t stop the Londoner from getting a little (Future) nostalgic down under. Back in 2018, the-then rising talent supported Bruno Mars’ ‘24K Magic’ Australian tour — which included a performance at St Kilda’s pre-eminent picture palace, the Palais Theatre. A seemingly special gig for the pop superstar, who in 2022 decided to open her sell-out Australian/New Zealand tour at the Art Deco theatre in what was her smallest performance of the year. Her feature was part of the Victorian Government’s latest music festival initiative, ALWAYS LIVE  — the brainchild of late local music legend, Michael Gudinski .

While Dua admitted on stage how nervous she was to accompany Bruno at the Palais that evening four years ago, she showed no signs of hesitation during her own exclusive set. In fact, the 27-year-old proved she can set the vibe anywhere; from smoke-hazed raves to iconic Aussie theatres. But in saying that, a discotheque environment was exactly what Dua was going for on when she made the Palais her club.

Enigmatically billed as “An Exclusive Evening with Dua Lipa,” it was unclear what fans would be in for on Sunday evening. Perhaps, the three-time Grammy-winner would perform acoustic renditions of her boppy singles, or host a Q&A like other concerts of similar titles? Also, with no room for a mosh pit — it seemed unlikely much boogying would occur from the small seats of the Palais. Oh, how wrong we were.

Initially, the atmosphere was rather civilised as guests carefully sipped on Prosecco in plastic cups while watching local support acts Ashwarya and Cat & Calmell. But when Queen Dua walked on stage just a few hours later, the mood instantly changed to that of a theatre with ‘No Rules.’ “Melbourne, what the fuck is up?!” Dua enthusiastically asked fans, many of whom were clad in colourful ‘fits, sequins and glitter, as she opened the night with her double Platinum hit, ‘Physical.’

I was fortunate enough to be seated just a few rows from the stage, and after a couple in front of me stood up to film her (within a few mere seconds of her arrival), we all elatedly got to our feet. And why wouldn’t we, considering more than 25,000 people registered for the ballot in the hopes of getting “up close and personal” with Dua — with some fans even spending upwards of $450 per ticket.

dua lipa tour melbourne

With 2,500 people in attendance, it wasn’t exactly as “intimate” as some people would expect — Dua certainly wasn’t performing in a small room or rooftop. But her ALWAYS LIVE gig did offer a unique and scaled back version of her Future Nostalgia stadium tour — one which didn’t require 20/20 vision. Supported by 10 smooth-as-butter back-up dancers, unpretentious props, and an appearance by Elton John (via video, of course), Dua completely held her own — without the need for theatrics.

Wearing a sultry black corset, likely a design by Mugler who often custom-creates her concert looks , and low-slung Y2K-inspired trousers — Dua performed hit after hit in just over an hour. From the rainbow-infused and bouncy ‘Levitating’ to a cancan-like chorus-line for her duet with the Rocketman in their remix of ‘Cold Heart,’ Dua absolutely gave it all her vocally and physically. Where some singers struggle to seamlessly carry a note while dramatically dropping to the floor, the Brit made it look effortless. She even emotively belted out the lyrics of ‘Pretty Please’ while being thrust in the air by her crew. Naturally, she didn’t pause or second-guess it.

While it wasn’t a particularly emotional concert — Dua spoke very little on stage, so there was no real ‘come-down’ moment — fans who followed her journey from the beginning would have appreciated her well-rounded setlist. Classics like ‘New Rules’ and ‘Be the One’ from her 2017 self-titled debut album allowed fans to reflect on her early music career. Meanwhile, house collaborations with Silk City and Calvin Harris for ‘Electricity’ and ‘One Kiss,’ respectively, invited fans to bust a move to a most-pulsating beat and laser-show. And in the Art Deco environment of the Palais, fans could easily be raving in an über cool club in Berlin.

Sure, “An Exclusive Evening with Dua Lipa” somewhat recalled the uncomfortable concerts of 2020/21 (you know, the strictly-seated variety for social distancing) as we danced within our own confined spaces, but I truly don’t think anyone minded. With a high-energy Dua smiling, winking and chanting just a few metres away, compared with the tiny dot we squint at during arena performances, the ALWAYS LIVE event was an experience-of-a-lifetime. I certainly left the Palais ‘Levitating.’

This morning, Dua even shared her post-Palais glow to Instagram when she wrote: “What a night!!!! Perfect way to kick off the Australian leg of the tour tonight with a special intimate performance to support the Melbourne/Victorian music scene with #ALWAYSLIVE at the Melbourne Palais Theatre.”

Dua Lipa heads into the arena on Saturday at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, and then performs at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on November 8 and 9, Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on November 11 and 12, Adelaide’s AEC Arena on November 14 and Perth’s RAC Arena on November 16.

Whether it’s Billy Joel at the MCG, Dua Lipa at the Palais Theatre, Nick Cave at Hanging Rock or one of the many unique events which make up the program, Victoria is the place to be if you love live music.”

“The ALWAYS LIVE team has worked tirelessly with the global music industry to deliver on our vision for a major event dedicated to contemporary live music, and today ALWAYS LIVE reaches an incredible milestone as we deliver our second big program announcement,” said ALWAYS LIVE CEO Steve Smith. “Activating the state across Melbourne’s CBD and suburbs and throughout the regions, ALWAYS LIVE is a true reflection of the depth, breadth and world-class offerings of the live music industry and scene here in Melbourne and Victoria. We are tremendously grateful to our key stakeholders, the Victorian Government and Visit Victoria, for joining us on this journey and for their continued support for an initiative that will bring immense value to the state.”

Dua Lipa a major coup for a Melbourne theatre

One of the world’s biggest artists right now, with a swag of hit singles, top-selling albums, international awards and accolades to her name, Dua Lipa represents the true definition of a modern-day phenomenon – singer, songwriter, performer, style creative and philanthropist.

Dua Lipa’s second studio album Future Nostalgia (2020), has dominated the airwaves and delivered six extraordinary hit singles in Australia; ‘Don’t Start Now’ (seven-times platinum), ‘Levitating’ (four-times platinum), ‘Break My Heart’ (three-times platinum),  ‘Physical’ (two-times platinum), ‘We’re Good’ (platinum), and ‘Hallucinate’ (gold). The album is platinum and after becoming the third highest-selling album released in 2020, is still top 10 after 74 weeks in the ARIA chart, returning to the top spot earlier this year following the release of ‘The Moonlight Edition’.

Dua sent a message to her fans at the time: “I am beyond excited to be bringing my world tour to Australia, it’s been way too long, but I promise, we are going to have one heck of a party.”

Meanwhile, Lipa’s eponymous debut album has eclipsed six million sales worldwide, with single sales reaching 80 million and the video for her break-out hit “New Rules” (“the song that changed my life,” she says), made her the youngest female solo artist to reach one billion views on YouTube. She made BRIT Award history in 2018 as the first female artist to pick up five nominations, with two wins for British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist. She then went on to receive two Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording for “Electricity,” her collaboration with Silk City the following year.

Emily Ulman, ALWAYS LIVE’s programming director, echoed Smith’s sentiments on landing a Dua Lipa Melbourne show at The Palais: “It has been my honour to work with the music community to dream up this ALWAYS LIVE program. The enormous offering that we present today reflects the energy and atmosphere of contemporary live music in Victoria, and further positions Melbourne and Victoria as the live music capital of Australia. We are thrilled to be collaborating with our many talented industry and community partners to curate an event that will attract global attention to our beloved world-class Victorian scene. I am proud to present this, the first-ever ALWAYS LIVE program.”

“From local talent to some of the world’s biggest names in music, we’re delivering the largest ever live music celebration in Australia while supporting local jobs, businesses, artists and roadies around the state,” added Victorian major events minister Steve Dimopoulos. “We’re bringing Victorians the live music experiences they love, to destinations across the state – offering even more reasons to hit the road and crank the tunes while discovering some of the best drawcards our state has to offer.”

Melbourne Goes Mad for Fred again.. Again [Live Review]

Fred again.. put his loving arms around rod laver arena once again in a show that fostered a real sense of togetherness.

Fred again..

It’s difficult not to resonate with something created with genuine connection as its driving force. Fred again.. knows this well – it’s a major reason why he’s become the most acclaimed producer of his era.

At the final Melbourne show of his unexpected Australian tour , feelings of togetherness and community engulfed Rod Laver Arena from the beginning to the end of his energetic set.

Fred again.. – real name Frederick Gibson – fostered a warm cocoon of inclusivity for the lucky fans in the packed crowd audience. The set incorporated the most wholesome parts of modern-day technology and social media, utilising these features to explore and represent his artistic collaborations.

The accompanying visuals appearing both around and above Rod Laver Arena aided the sense of togetherness, while the casual nature of the footage provided a sense of intimacy for the audience. Here was a superstar producer inviting us into his world, the atmosphere – even the live footage of Fred himself was placed with a point of view that you might expect from a friend on FaceTime.

After a solid opening set from Joy (Anonymous), which did everything necessary to warm up the excited crowd, Fred again.. took to the stage and commenced his set with a beautifully executed delicacy. Situated behind a piano, Fred’s spacious introduction to “ Kyle (i found you)” culminated in Kyle “Guante” Tran Myhre’s voice echoing around the arena, guaranteeing a gorgeous start.

After contextualising his 2022 album, Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 9 2022) , the producer transitioned into “ Bleu (better with time)”, the shift reflected through a lighting switch that left the arena glowing cobalt blue through powerful bursts of the house lights.

@travellin_t Ok Fred you win x #fredagain #fyp #movetoaustralia #livemusic #rodlaverarena #fredagainmelbourne #whvaustralia2024 ♬ original sound – tara | life in aus 🇦🇺

This led to the removal of the cloud of darkness, and it further highlighted  just how many people were inside the arena, holding each other, dancing with ecstatic abandon; Fred again.. saw us and we saw each other, enhancing the sense of unity.

The producer then casually ran through the crowd to a secondary stage in the middle of the mosh. An additional blaze of excitement fluttered through everyone surrounding him as the crowd noticed that the absolutely banging “ Jungle” was the next track. He conducted everyone from his new vantage point, encouraging singing and as much involvement as possible.

Another captivating moment of community involved an (almost) brand new song, a live loop of the audience, and a surprise appearance by Henry Counsell – AKA Big Hen – who was revealed to be sitting among the crowd.

“I let you take a piece of me / I hope you get the peace you need,”  Fred again.. taught the crowd to sing, and he was met with unquestionable affection and enthusiasm.

The barrier between artist and audience, if it wasn’t already, was now completely dissolved. Big Hen sent his vocals soaring from his initial base in the stands before leisurely moving onto the main stage. The crowd was organised into a two-section choir, eagerly awaiting their cue and putting everything they had into their segment of the track.

Inspired by seeing a few pairings in the crowd sitting up on each other’s shoulders, Fred again.. requested that everyone in the mosh follow suit for the duration of the fan favourite track, “ adore u” . Less than a minute later, the number of feet on the ground had halved and the height of the standing crowd had doubled.

@char3pring @Fredagainagain asking a melbourne moshpit to get on each others shoulders for the first time, the best type of chaos ✨🪩🩵 one of the best concerts of my lifetime, thank you fred 🥹🫶 #fredagain #fredagainmelbourne #fredagainagainagain ♬ original sound – Charlee Pring

For “ Angie (i’ve been lost)”, he called again upon his near-15,000 strong choir to sing the part of local singer-songwriter, Angie McMahon (who appeared in person at his previous Rod Laver Arena show for a stunning live collaboration).

“Billie (loving arms)” took the place of the penultimate track, and by the first articulation of “Put your loving arms around me,” the lyrical sentiment echoed throughout the arena. Arms that had been in the air for the entirety of the set instantly found the person nearest to them, pulling them closer.

The set concluded with – what else? – “ Delilah (pull me out of this)”, and those final minutes reached a true crescendo, everyone savouring the last track together.

Fred again.. is far from the first artist to foster such a positive community at his shows – Taylor Swift just departed Melbourne , after all – but rarely is the connection between artist and crowd this reciprocal. If the connection between a globetrotting artist and a local crowd can often feel forced, Fred again.. really tries to immerse himself in a city and its people.

Every place, from Melbourne to Sydney next week to even tiny Scottish villages , is made to feel special by the producer (witness his gleeful travels around Melbourne in his Instagram Stories). Inside Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday night, he leaned into spontaneity, bouncing off the Melburnians around him, ensuring everyone from the mosh to the nosebleeds was right there with him, matching his energy.

Fred again. stressed the importance of human connection at his Melbourne show by simply doing one thing: playing music live with pure enthusiasm and no pretension, recalling the way we took to music as children. It’s a vital lesson in these diffuse times, really.

I hope she reads this. SO lemme spill the tea. It was freaking amazing. I was so close I could see ever pore on her, and lemme tell you there isn’t many. She’s so amazing and I felt the show ran pretty smoothly except for the fact that it was very hot and everyone around you was sweating their ass off. But she was great. Best night of my life seeing the love of my life. She was so good and it was so beautiful if she ever were to return I would be there in a heart beat. Though the initial show was cancelled I wasn’t one bit mad after attending this one and it was really nice that my old tickets still were valid. Thanks dua, love you lots. -your biggest fan:)

It was the most lit concert i had ever attended. Dua was so full of life & super hyped for the whole concert. Im still upset that yesterday had come to an end way too soon. The most memorable memory i had was the moment she teared uo in her speech for 'New Love' as that song was way too genuine and its from the most vulnerable side of hers. The next memorable moment was the participation in 'IDGAF'the crowd was so wild, and Dua also had a moment with us when she remixed the sentence 'I dont give a F' like amazing man this is the most mesmerising concert i had ever attended. I love you Dua. (heartsheartshearts)

Oh, wow. Dua Lipa was absolutely fantastic! She is extraordinarily talented and really knows how to work a crowd. The band was brilliant — and I can say it was definitely loud enough!

I was very lucky to see her at a venue such as the Apollo. Such a small venue for somebody doing an arena tour! We got the tickets very early on, before she became massive, and I’m very glad we did.

The whole way home I was smiling. The last song — New Rules — set the place on fire, that last chorus was insanely good, and all complete with confetti canons!

Thank you for the time, Dua Lipa! Money well-spent; it was worth every second!

This concert will stay in my mind for as long as I live, thank you!

Taylor Swift Debuts ‘Getaway Car,' ‘August' & ‘The Other Side of the Door' Mashup Live in Melbourne: Watch

Welcome to the acoustic section: Taylor Swift crossed eras to play an unexpected mashup of "Getaway Car," "August" and "The Other Side of the Door" in Melbourne, Australia, on Feb. 17.

Introducing the acoustic part of her Eras Tour show at the third of four concerts in the city, Swift - who at each tour date performs two tracks that are not often heard during the show - told the Melbourne Cricket Ground crowd she wanted to pick a song "that they really wanna hear, and I think I might've achieved it."

"You have to let me know," she teased the Melbourne audience. "I really just want you to be happy 'cause you're making me really happy."

Lucky for them, Swift actually gave fans a three-song mashup on guitar that counted as only one of the songs during her acoustic set.

About three minutes into a performance of Reputation standout "Getaway Car," Swift shifted into Folklore ‘s "August," singing, "I can see us lost in the memory/ August slipped away into a moment in time/ ‘Cause it was never mine/ And I can see us twisted in bedhseets/ August slipped away like a bottle of wine/ ‘Cause you were never mine."

Swift closed the mashup with the outro of "The Other Side of the Door," which originally appeared on the platinum edition of Fearless in 2008 and was re-recorded for 2021's Fearless (Taylor's Version) .

"With your face and the beautiful eyes/ And the conversation with the little white lies/ And the faded picture of a beautiful night/ You carry me from your car up the stairs/ And I broke down cryin', was she worth this mess?/ After everything and that little black dress / After everything, I must confess I need you," she sang to loud cheers.

The Midnights star then took to the piano to perform "This Is Me Trying," from Folklore , as the second surprise song of the set. She'd played "Getaway Car" and "This Is Me Trying" only once before so far on this tour.

Watch Swift's surprise mashup below. Keep up with a full list of her surprise songs on The Eras Tour here .
