Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

Naman Shrestha of Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

After his breakthrough with leading roles in ‘Risky Business’ and ‘ Top Gun ‘ in the 1980s, Thomas “Tom” Cruise Mapother IV started bagging pivotal roles in several dramas, including ‘ Born on the Fourth of July ,’ for which he even won a Golden Globe Award and got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the 1990s, he rose to newer heights of stardom by featuring in various commercially successful films, such as ‘ A Few Good Men ,’ ‘ Interview with the Vampire ,’ ‘The Firm,’ and ‘ Jerry Maguire .’

Once he impacted dramas, he started traversing the action and sci-fi genres. By landing some iconic roles in the ‘ Mission: Impossible ‘ film series, ‘ Collateral ,’ ‘ Edge of Tomorrow ,’ and ‘ Top Gun: Maverick ,’ he established himself as an action star, performing most of the risky stunts on his own. The winner of three Golden Globe Awards, four nominations for the Oscars, and an Honorary Palme d’Or, Tom Cruise is known to be one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Given his immense popularity and fandom, most of our readers are looking forward to his future projects. Here is a list of all the upcoming movies and TV shows of Tom Cruise!

1. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (2024)

Tom Cruise recently jumped off a cliff on a motorbike for ‘ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ‘ and he will be in action soon enough in its sequel, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’ Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the spy action movie is the eighth installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time running.

Although the plot details are kept under wraps, the action-adventure film is most likely to resume Ethan’s hunt for The Entity as he meets some new friends and foes along the way. The production for the sequel began in March 2022 but is yet to be finished due to the delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Having gone through several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to its release date, it is now officially set to be released on June 28, 2024. But it is very much possible that it will get postponed again due to the pause in production.

2. Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project (TBA)

tom cruise upcoming film

Tom Cruise is set to take his status as an action star to the next level by traveling out of Earth to film the first ever Hollywood motion picture in outer space. In May 2020, it was reported that Elon Musk’s Space X and Cruise were working on an action-adventure project with NASA. Not only is Cruise expected to be blasted into space alongside filmmaker Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked in ‘ American Made ‘ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ for the upcoming film, but he will also live up to his reputation by attempting to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station. In this movie, Cruise is set to essay the role of a down-on-his-luck man who is the sole person in the position to save Earth. Apart from starring in the film, he is attached to the project as a writer as well as a producer.

3. Live Die Repeat and Repeat (TBA)

A sequel to the 2014 movie ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ is an upcoming science fiction film that will reportedly reunite Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, with the former set to reprise his role as Major William Cage. Moreover, Emily Blunt is also rumored to portray Rita again, alongside Cruise. Ever since the release of the hit original film, talks of a sequel have been flying around. However, in 2019, it was finally set in motion when Matthew Robinson was brought on to write the script.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, in a May 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly , Emily Blunt revealed, “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.” With the project still lingering in the development stage, it is hard to expect it to be brought to life in at least a couple of years.

Tom Cruise, Alejandro González Iñárritu

Tom Cruise will star in the new feature from The Revenant filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in talks to acquire the package, which marks Iñárritu’s first English-language film since the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer The Revenant nearly a decade ago.

Iñárritu last directed the Spanish-language Netflix drama Bardo . Prior to this, the director was in theaters with The Revenant , which earned over $500 million at the global box office and landed him the best director Oscar. This followed his 2015 best picture, director and original wins for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) .

Cruise has been nominated twice for best actor, in Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July (1990) and Cameron Crowe’s Jerry Maguire (1997), and once for supporting actor in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia (2000). Iñárritu directed DiCaprio to Oscar gold in The Revenant and helped Michael Keaton land a best actor nom for Birdman . The pairing of Cruise and the filmmaker is sure to raise the notion that the actor is hoping for a prestige play.

Warners, meanwhile, has been beefing up its roster of features with top talent in recent months, locking down Ryan Coogler’s next feature and greenlighting a Paul Thomas Anderson movie with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star. Legendary and Warners are out in theaters next weekend with Dune 2 , the sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic.

Deadline first reported the news of the project.

Upcoming Tom Cruise Movies: Top Gun: Maverick, Mission Impossible 7 And More

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise , despite his age, remains one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood, and oddly enough, the hard-to-believe yet mostly practical stunts that he pulls off time and time again are only getting crazier. Cruise, who most recently starred in the 2018’s Mission:Impossible Fallout and actor proved that even in his mid 50s, he's still one of the top action stars around. We're always up for a good Tom Cruise movie, and honestly, everything else the actor has coming up — Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 , namely — looks pretty damn good too.

Most of Tom Cruise’s movies have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic closing down film and television productions around the world and audiences’ reluctance to return to movie theaters, the veteran actor-turned-stuntman has a lot for us to look forward to here in the next year or so. While a couple of them are the requisite sequels that come with success, several others are wholly original projects, like the one that will reportedly take Cruise to space. All that being said, we're looking forward to simply learning more about many of these, never mind actually seeing the finished product, so here are some upcoming movies from one of the most notable, and hardworking, figures in Hollywood.

Top Gun: Maverick - May 27, 2022

The idea that there might, one day, be a sequel to Top Gun has been one of those development ideas that hasn't died since the first movie came out in the mid-1980s. However, now we know that after all the talk, the movie is actually happening, but just not as soon as everyone had originally hoped. The title is Top Gun : Maverick and it will follow Cruise's Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as an instructor at the flight school where he finds himself working with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw ( Miles Teller ), the son of his former partner Goose. In addition to finding himself in the middle of a dangerous mission that could end in tragedy, Maverick is forced to confront his past, most notably the death of his best friend and wingman all those years ago.

This version of Top Gun: Maverick has been in the works since 2010, when Paramount pictures approached producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott about making a sequel to the 1986 action blockbuster, according to New York Magazine . There wasn’t much traction with the project until 2017 when Deadline revealed that Top Gun: Maverick would see the return of Tom Cruise’s iconic fighter pilot, this time being directed by Joseph Kosinski, the director of Tron Legacy and Oblivion . Originally set for a July 2019 release, the Top Gun sequel has been delayed multiple times over the past few years, and it looked like we would be seeing Cruise take flight in June 2020. That date, however, was pushed back to December 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic caused major disturbances in the entertainment industry.

Now it looks like we’ll have to wait until at least next summer to see Top Gun: Maverick , as the film is set to take flight on May 27, 2022.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning (Part 1) - July 14, 2023

At this point in his career, Tom Cruise could only make Mission: Impossible movies and his millions of adoring fans wouldn’t mind. Since first taking on IMF agent Ethan Hunt with the first entry in the franchise in 1996, Cruise has put his life on the line too many times to count by doing everything from climbing the face of a cliff with no safety gear, climbing the tallest building in the world, holding onto an airplane during takeoff, and the list goes on. Cruise looks to keep up with that trend with Mission: Impossible 7 , in which Ethan Hunt will team up with his old buddies. And while we don’t yet know what the movie is about , the cast, which includes returning members of the IMF team as well as Hayley Atwell , Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and Esai Morales, has us stoked.

Production on Mission: Impossible: 7 was originally supposed to get underway in February 2020 in Italy, but when the country went into a virtual shutdown , things moved to England before being shut down. Tom Cruise didn’t let COVID-19 stop him from putting his life in danger by filming some insane stunts that will surely up the ante for future installments (more on that next). No surprise here, but all those delays in filming forced Paramount Pictures to push back the release of Mission: Impossible 7 from its original theatrical release date.

Mission: Impossible 8 - June 8, 2024

If Mission: Impossible 7 is a mystery, then its sequel, Mission: Impossible 8 is an even bigger one. Going off comments director Christopher McQuarrie made during a May 2020 appearance on the Light the Fuse podcast, the eighth movie in the franchise will be tied to the events of its most recent predecessor more than ever before . During that appearance, McQuarrie revealed that he is essentially turning one Mission: Impossible movie into two so that he can further explore all the characters similar to how he took a deep dive into Ethan Hunt’s past (including some throwbacks from earlier entries in the franchise) in Mission: Impossible - Fallout . Instead of making one extremely long movie that would require trimming some of the more emotional beats, the director essentially wants to let those stories breathe.

Tom Cruise previously confirmed the existence of Mission: Impossible 8 in January 2019 when he tweeted a short video showing the Mission: Impossible logo with a caption reading “Summer 2021 and Summer 2022.” At the time, the eighth movie was supposed to drop on August 5, 2022, but in wake of everything happening with the movie industry, Paramount Pictures pushed back the theatrical release nearly a year to July 7, 2023. According to Variety , both Mission: Impossible sequels were supposed to be shot back-to-back in order to be ready for the original release dates, but we’ll have to see how that goes with all of the delays.

Luna Park - TBD

Originally, the word was that Tom Cruise was going to join his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman for Luna Park before playing Ethan Hunt again in Mission: Impossible . While that didn't happen, there's every reason to believe that Luna Park will happen once schedules align. The description of Luna Park sounds like what is essentially a heist movie, except the thing being stolen is a power source, and the place it's being stolen from is the moon. Cruise has been solid in science fiction in recent years, so we're all for it. We'll know this one is a go when more cast is announced, as a heist movie will certainly need a team.

It has long been speculated that Luna Park and the Tom Cruise sci-fi movie that will actually be shot in outer space are one and the same, considering both are to be directed by Doug Liman. Not familiar with the Tom Cruise/Space X/NASA team-up movie? Cruise and Liman are scheduled to be passengers on Space X’s Dragon Axiom when the spacecraft goes to the International Space Station in October 2021. Details are light at this point in time, but expect to hear more about the project in the next year or so as we get closer to the historic launch. If nothing changes, Cruise and Liman will film the first movie actually shot in space. I mean, can you imagine anyone but Tom Cruise shooting a movie in the vacuum of space? Hopefully we’ll find out how Cruise’s signature charm and love of out-of-this-world stunts stand up in zero gravity.

Live Die Repeat And Repeat (Edge of Tomorrow 2)

Tom Cruise will always be known for his Mission: Impossible movies and classics like Top Gun , Jerry Maguire , and Risky Business , but the action star has also been in his fair share of science fiction films throughout his career. Since the start of the 21st Century, Cruise has had leading roles in Minority Report , War of the Worlds , Oblivion , and Edge of Tomorrow or Live Dive Repeat . And with talk of a potential Edge of Tomorrow 2 or Live Die Repeat and Repeat in the works, it’s only a matter of time before Cruise’s William Cage returns in some shape or form (or time loop).

While Edge of Tomorrow wasn't a literal blockbuster, it was a successful box office film both financially and with fans. While a sequel to the film hasn't been given an official announcement, Christopher McQuarrie and other hired screenwriters are involved. Tom Cruise and Doug Liman are basically working together on a semi-permanent basis these days so this one will happen eventually. Emily Blunt previously said the script for Edge of Tomorrow 2 was being worked on, and in March 2020, the star of A Quiet Place sounded pretty optimistic about the future of the rumored follow-up to the underrated action flick. Hopefully we’ll learn more about Live Die Repeat Repeat here pretty soon, but with Cruise, Liman, and McQuarrie being extremely busy with other projects, we might be waiting on this one for quite some time. I just hope it’s not as long as the break between the Top Gun movies.

Those are all the upcoming Tom Cruise projects we can expect to see in theaters at some point in the next couple of years. Tom Cruise working on three new movies with Mission: Impossible 7 director — including a musical

Cruise has his plate full following his blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise attends a red carpet event for the film 'Top Gun: Maverick'

We now have a pretty good idea of how Tom Cruise plans to follow up Top Gun: Maverick , beyond Mission: Impossible 7 and 8.

In an exclusive report, Deadline is stating that Cruise and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Parts One and Two director Christopher McQuarrie will be partnering up for a further three unannounced movies. These projects are pretty broad in scope, though the initial highlight is Cruise’s desire to follow up Rock of Ages with an original musical.

Of course, these projects will now go to the back of an already packed calendar for this summer’s biggest star. Cruise already has Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two coming out in each of the next two summers. Aka get ready for Cruise to take the title of summer blockbuster king for three years in a row.

Tom Cruise's three big new projects

Yes, Cruise is in fact working on a musical, or he is if Deadline’s reporting is to be believed. Cruise and McQuarrie are planning to develop an original song and dance-style musical. That means new IP, so there shouldn’t be any worries about a potential Top Gun: The Musical hitting the silver screen any time soon.

Not that Cruise doesn’t have the skills to lead in a musical. The actor trained successfully to be able to sing like a rock musician for Rock of Ages, so the expectations for this project shouldn’t be low. Plus, if Risky Business was any indication, we know he can dance.

The other two projects that are now rumored to be in the works are (shocker) another original action film with franchise potential to go along with Cruise’s other two action franchises, and a space-based film directed by Doug Liman, with McQuarrie producing. NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX are going to be assisting, and it looks like Cruise's next project.

There's also talk of a potential Tropic Thunder spinoff, but it may be one of the other projects. In Tropic Thunder, a comedy starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black, Cruise played Les Grossman, a producer with a penchant for dancing a bit and cursing — a lot. Cruise has been rumored to have been working on this project in the past, with Entertainment Weekly reporting on a potential movie as far back as 2010. As Deadline notes "It’s unclear if they will create a whole movie around Grossman, or borrow him for inclusion in either of the other vehicles." Either way, they want to revive the character.

What other movies is Tom Cruise working on?

Cruise should be able to quickly capitalize on the success of Top Gun: Maverick. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One is slated for a July 14, 2023 release and is already in post-production. The follow-up, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two is currently filming in the U.K. and will come out a year later.

Cruise was recently spotted filming “speed flying” for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two. This is expected to be a new stunt to make all previous Tom Cruise stunts — well, they’ll still probably look awesome, but this one is supposed to be even crazier.

Deadline says that Universal is signed on to be the studio for the space-based project, which could end up being the most ambitious of Cruise’s career.

Tom Cruise’s Next Film After Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Will Shoot Scenes in Outer Space: Report

Tom Cruise in a still from Mission: Impossible - Fallout

  • Tom Cruise’s space movie is backed by Universal on a $200 million budget
  • Work on Dead Reckoning Part 2 begins soon after the press tour for Part 1
  • Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is out now in theatres

Tom Cruise is still hell-bent on filming his next movie in outer space, reuniting with his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman. Speaking to Variety during the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiere in New York City, the actor claimed that he did not have a production date yet, adding: “We've been working on it diligently and we'll see where we go.” Universal Pictures is backing the still-untitled film, with a budget of roughly $200 million (about Rs. 1,647 crore). Missing from this update are the words NASA and Elon Musk's Space X, with whom the actor was in talks to film aboard the International Space Station, back in 2020.

The latter expressed his interest in the film, though it's unclear if he's still involved given the ongoing drama between Twitter and Meta's Threads . But before Cruise zooms off into space, he still needs to film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two , the potential finale of his long-running espionage franchise. Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie confirmed in the interview that work on the sequel will resume as soon as they're done with the press tour for Part 1 .

On their way back to the UK, the filmmaker intends to make a stop for location scouting, adding that he's got two whole days of vacation before he heads back to work again. The biggest draw of any Mission: Impossible film is the stunt work, which Cruise delivers in spades in his latest movie — riding a motorcycle off a cliff before safely parachuting down to another train fight sequence, which tasked the crew with building their own practical model from scratch.

Circling back to the space movie, Cruise's feature-length film will no longer be the first one to be shot in outer space. That feat was achieved by a Russian space drama called The Challenge — released in Russian cinemas in April — which followed a doctor forced to go into space to perform surgery on an injured cosmonaut. It was filmed in orbit for nearly two weeks on a reported budget of 1.555 billion rubles (about Rs. 105 crore) and earned 1 billion rubles (about Rs. 91 crore) at the regional box office, as of May. It's unclear whether the film will ever receive a wide release. Meanwhile, Cruise previously narrated the short documentary Space Station 3D — the first IMAX 3D production in space — which is one of several documentaries that have been shot in space.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One — out today in theatres worldwide — pits Cruise's IMF agent Ethan Hunt on a globe-trotting mission to prevent a bioweapon from falling into the wrong hands, as dark forces from his past start closing in. Reuniting with his allies field agent Benji Dunn ( Simon Pegg ), hacker Luther Stickell ( Ving Rhames ), and former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust ( Rebecca Ferguson ), Hunt is now stuck at a crossroads, as he struggles to prioritise his mission over the people around him. New additions to the franchise include Hayley Atwell ( Agent Carter ) as the pickpocketing frenemy Grace, alongside Pom Klementiff ( Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ) and Esai Morales ( Titans ) as the antagonists.

Currently, there is no release window for Cruise's space-set movie. Meanwhile, you can check out Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, now playing in theatres worldwide.

Upcoming Tom Cruise Movies You Won't Want To Miss

Tom Cruise at SDCC 2019

Though Tom Cruise has seen his share of ups and downs over the course of his decades-long career in Hollywood, he's still one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. And as for his career, well, ups and downs aside, it remains one of the more impressive, and most adventurous, in cinema history.

The actor famously got his start starring in eighties teen comedies, but quickly found favor in the dramatic realm, and saw his career kick into overdrive once he began fronting action-packed blockbusters. Along the way, he's worked with some of the most iconic filmmakers in the biz (Scorsese, Spielberg, Kubrick, and Paul Thomas Anderson, among them). He's also fronted a blockbuster franchise, earned three Academy Award nominations, and sacrificed his body in service of  performing his own death-defying stunt-work .

Simply put, there isn't much that  Tom Cruise hasn't done in the movie business. But even as he has almost virtually nothing left to prove, Cruise continues to push his own limits on screen — a fact evinced by the staggering slate of films he currently has in the works, in the can, or deep in production. Here's a look at a few of Tom Cruise's upcoming movies you really don't want to miss.

Tom Cruise will again fulfill his need for speed in Top Gun: Maverick

The next time movie lovers will see Tom Cruise on the big screen will be in one of the most anxiously-awaited sequels in the history of moving pictures. That film is, of course, the sequel to Cruise's 1986 blockbuster Top Gun , which found the actor portraying a hot-shot pilot (ahem, "Naval Aviator") learning hard life lessons while pulling some serious Gs in the cockpit of an F-16.

As far as eighties classics go, you'd be hard-pressed to find a flick as certifiably "classic" as  Top Gun . And yet, even as sequel-ready as the original film seemed, it took over three decades for the followup to finally come together, with Cruise himself shocking the whole of San Diego Comic Con 2019 by delivering the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick  himself , promising a summer 2020 release for the film.

But then 2020 arrived, and brought with it issues the world could never have foreseen, forcing movie theaters to shutter not just for the summer movie season, but for the foreseeable future. Those closures naturally forced every major studio to shuffle the release dates for the entirety of their 2020 slate, including Top Gun: Maverick , which was initially bumped to December 2020 before finally landing a prime spot in Paramount Pictures' summer 2021 lineup. And while its a sincere bummer that  Top Gun  fans are still waiting to see Cruise reprise his iconic role as the cocksure "Maverick," we're still more than pumped to see this one.

Tom Cruise will suit up for a pair of new Mission: Impossible adventures

Tom Cruise has been front and center for some of the biggest movies released in the past few decades. As it happens, six of those films have found him portraying the same character — that being Impossible Mission Force all-star, Ethan Hunt. And whatever you think of Cruise's ongoing  Mission: Impossible  films, the franchise has become one of the most successful cinema has yet seen, grossing over $3.5 billion at the global box office to date.

By the time Cruise is finished with the series, that box office take will be significantly higher, because the franchise is still very much alive, and some might even claim it keeps getting better, particularly after the action-packed spectacular that was 2018's   Mission: Impossible – Fallout . Given the overwhelming success of that film, it was hardly a surprise that Cruise announced a follow-up. What was surprising was that Cruise didn't just announce one follow-up film, but two, which would be shot back-to-back with  Fallout  helmer Christopher McQuarrie in the director's chair.

As has been the case with every  Mission: Impossible flick going back to the 1996 original, next to nothing is known about what madness awaits Hunt and his team in the new films, but as shots from the currently in-production sequels continue to roll in, it's clear that Cruise and everyone involved are out to make the new films the coolest, and biggest,  Mission: Impossible  adventures yet.

Tom Cruise may Live Die Repeat and Repeat in an Edge of Tomorrow sequel

If you've been tracking Tom Cruise's career in the past 15 to 20 years, you might've noticed he's made a habit of working with the same directors, re-teaming with the likes of McQuarrie, Edward Zwick, and Joseph Kosinski on the regular. You'll soon be able to add Doug Liman to the list of recurring Cruise collaborators, as the duo have a handful of projects in various stages of production.

Chief among them is a sequel to the pair's 2014 sci-fi spectacle Edge of Tomorrow .  That film found Cruise portraying Cage, a soldier doomed to die over and over again in combat, after getting stuck in a mysterious,  Groundhog Day -ish time loop that's broken only with the help of a fearsome fellow warrior Rita (Emily Blunt).

As many likely recall,  Edge of Tomorrow hit theaters in the summer of 2014, and while it was hardly a bomb, the pricey flick didn't exactly set the box office ablaze . Still, word of mouth on the film remained strong, with some proclaiming it an unheralded sci-fi classic. And   Edge of Tomorrow  really is an extraordinary action adventure that deserved a lot more love upon release, and probably should've earned a sequel sooner than it has.

Luckily, stars may finally be aligning to bring Liman, Cruise, and Blunt back into the fray for a fresh round of time-looping insanity. And while nothing is set in stone regarding the tentatively titled  Live Die Repeat and Repeat (even Cruise's involvement is listed as "rumored" on IMDb), it's safe to assume  Edge of Tomorrow 's still-growing fandom is beyond excited by the possibilities.

Tom Cruise will go to space for both Luna Park and a mysterious Space X flick

As mentioned, Tom Cruise is about to get a whole lot of face time with his  Edge of Tomorrow  and American Made  director Doug Liman. And that'll be true even if that rumored Edge of Tomorrow  sequel never materializes, because the duo have two more high-profile projects in the works, both of which will find Cruise venturing to outer space in some capacity or another.

One of those films will likely find Cruise playing spaceman on studio backlots, with the actor-slash-producer enlisting Liman to helm a pseudo space-heist flick titled  Luna Park . That film is currently listed as being in pre-production, but would potentially find Cruise leading a band of space workers to the moon to steal a game-changing energy source.

As for the other film, well, it seems that untitled project would find the real-life Cruise and Liman actually blasting into space, literally — with a little help from NASA and entrepreneur-slash-SpaceX head honcho Elon Musk — to make a movie set on the International Space Station.

Yes, the actual International Space Station, in  actual  space.

Cruise and his cohorts announced the insanely ambitious project earlier this year, though little else is known about what they've got in the works. At this point, all we really know is that if they do get this thing off the ground, they've got a promise from Universal Pictures to pony up a staggering $200 million to help make it happen. And frankly, it now seems like the tragedy of tragedies if Tom Cruise doesn't actually get to make a movie in space.

Warner Bros. Spends Big: ‘Joker 2’ Budget Hits $200 Million, Lady Gaga’s $12 Million Payday, Courting Tom Cruise’s New Deal and More

Tom Cruise Joaquin Phoenix

In January, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy jetted to London to connect with the new crown jewel of the studio, Tom Cruise . The three met to identify a film that would kick off their nonexclusive “strategic partnership.” Sources say a raft of possibilities were discussed, including an “Edge of Tomorrow” follow-up and Quentin Tarantino ’s “The Movie Critic,” which currently isn’t set up with a distributor and has Warner Bros., like every major studio, salivating.

In Tarantino, Cruise could find the rare auteur who marries box office performance and awards-season heat. However, securing the project won’t come cheap. The biggest roadblock for De Luca and Abdy is potentially Sony. Sources say Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman has the edge, having distributed Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”

Still, a Cruise-Tarantino alliance at Warners would align with the De Luca-Abdy modus operandi: Lure A-list directors who can attract bona fide stars — and spend wildly. Since taking over the studio in July 2022, De Luca and Abdy have struck some pricey deals: There’s Anderson’s next movie, which will feature Leonardo DiCaprio (earning $20 million plus), and a Ryan Coogler-Michael B. Jordan vampire film that has Warners ceding the copyright to Coogler after 25 years. The latter move was a head-scratcher considering that Tarantino is the only other director to secure an eventual copyright from a major studio (with “Once Upon a Time”) and will surely be looking to replicate that with “Movie Critic.” But sources who have done recent business with the studio say the mandate to spare no expense to land big talent comes via Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

That time may be approaching. In April, Warner Bros. Discovery can entertain offers to buy, sell or merge with a studio like NBCUniversal, as many on the lot believe will happen. That’s when the two-year lock-up period expires as part of the 2022 deal that united WarnerMedia and Discovery. All of the recent moves, from a first-look pact with Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap to the quest to land Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” follow-up are akin to painting a house before it hits the market.

And this is one splashy renovation. The budget for Todd Phillips’ musical “Joker” sequel — one of De Luca and Abdy’s first green lights — has ballooned to about $200 million, a significant bump from the $60 million cost of the first film. Sources say Joaquin Phoenix is getting $20 million to reprise his role as the clown prince of crime, while Lady Gaga is taking home about $12 million to play Harley Quinn. “Joker” took in more than $1 billion, but musicals are tricky. Case in point: Warners lost $40 million on last year’s “The Color Purple,” according to sources. Though that one can be blamed on the previous regime.

Some argue that spending big is essential when releasing movies in theaters.

“There’s only so much top talent in Hollywood, and it’s very competitive and stretched thin because a lot of talent have deals in streaming,” says Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations. “If theatrical is going to work, you need the A-lister like Tom and Leo, and Warner Bros. is spending what they need to spend to keep this talent.”

But executives across town believe Warners’ math sometimes doesn’t add up, with the studio decried as fiscally irresponsible. The Anderson film, for instance, was greenlit with a $115 million budget, according to sources. Underscoring the gamble, none of the director’s movies has crossed $80 million at the box office. His latest, 2021’s “Licorice Pizza,” made $33 million worldwide. Even with Cruise’s star power, “Magnolia” only mustered $48.5 million. (It was De Luca, then a New Line exec, who convinced Cruise to play “Magnolia’s” misogynistic self-help guru.) The pair are said to be less pumped about another auteur’s latest: Bong Joon Ho ’s “Mickey 17.” In January, Warner Bros. pulled the $150 million Robert Pattinson sci-fi starrer from its schedule and then moved it to 2025. A Warner rep insists: “There is, of course, enthusiasm for it.”

Other projects that De Luca and Abdy prioritized are perplexing executives at rival studios. Warners picked up Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein film, which is set in the 1930s and stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley. It was a project that Netflix deemed too risky and passed on before Warners salvaged it. (A Warners source says Netflix didn’t want to make it on the timeline Gyllenhaal proposed.)

Despite the pressure to acquiesce to demands from top talent, De Luca and Abdy can still say no.

Action Star Tom Cruise Reportedly Wouldn’t Mind Occasionally Doing Auteur-Driven Movies Like ‘Magnolia’ Again

Matt Prigge

You might not believe this, but Tom Cruise wasn’t always a death-defying action star . In fact, he’s mostly doing the action star thing in reverse. Despite Top Gun — in which he’s mostly sitting down — he didn’t really do action movies until the first Mission: Impossible , when he was in his mid-30s. Before that, as a young, strapping Adonis, he mostly did dramas. Did you know he’s been Oscar-nominated for his acting three times? Now that he’s, well, in his 60s Cruise reportedly wouldn’t mind going back to misspent youth, doing movies where he doesn’t have to literally put his life in danger to entertain — a thing, mind you, he didn’t really start doing until he was nearly 50.

Buried in a sprawling piece about Warner Bros. Discovery by Variety is a bit about Cruise, who’s teamed up with them to make movies in an un-exclusive manner, despite the company having a nasty habit of deleting completed films to save a couple bucks . Variety reports that Cruise doesn’t just want to make big, splashy franchise movies with them. He’d also, the article claims, “like to return to working with auteurs like Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Indeed, Cruise’s most recent acting nomination is for 1999’s Magnolia , Anderson’s third feature and his first after Boogie Nights . Cruise went well against type to play sleazy, repulsively confident but secretly self-loathing proto-MRA motivational speaker T.J. Mackey, one of the movie’s ensemble of San Fernando Valley sadsacks who aren’t sure what to do when it suddenly [spoiler!] starts raining frogs.

Back in the day Cruise made a lot of serious movies for adult moviegoers. Believe it or not! After his breakthroughs Risky Business and Top Gun , he worked with no less than Martin Scorsese, shooting pool to Warren Zevon in The Color of Money . His first Oscar nomination was for Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July , though he should have netted that honor for the previous year’s Rain Man . Cruise held his shouty own with Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men , and he was at his arguable best in Jerry Maguire , his second Oscar nom. And he’s excellent, apparently riffing on his fear of aging, in his and Cameron Crowe’s underrated reunion, Vanilla Sky .

Even after Cruise crossed over into Ethan Hunt Land, he would still do things like go gray and psychotic for Michael Mann’s more serious actioner Collateral or spend over a year shooting with Stanley Kubrick for the once semi-maligned, now beloved Eyes Wide Shut .

Anyway, point is, Tom Cruise, serious thespian is something the movies have been missing. Put the guy in a suit, make him stand in rooms talking to other humans, and you’ll see he can make that as cinematically thrilling as hanging off the Burj Khalifa , maybe even moreso. More importantly, maybe it’ll be him who can finally vanquish WBD cartoon villain David Zaslav .

Screen Rant

Quentin tarantino's next movie can be an actor reunion we've wanted for 30 years.

Two actors could be reuniting in Quentin Tarantino's The Movie Critic for the first time since they starred in their only movie together 30 years ago.

  • Quentin Tarantino's final film, The Movie Critic, may reunite Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise onscreen after their first collaboration 30 years ago, 1994's Interview with the Vampire.
  • Movie stars like Pitt and Cruise are fitting choices for The Movie Critic, which is said to celebrate filmmaking and will mark the end of Tarantino's pivotal and impactful directorial career.
  • Pitt and Cruise nearly reunited in an earlier version of 2019's Ford v Ferrari, but the project fell through.

Two huge actors will reunite onscreen for the first time in 30 years in Quentin Tarantino's upcoming film The Movie Critic , as long as one casting rumor turns out to be true. Based on a real film critic from the 1970s, Tarantino's The Movie Critic will center on the titular character who writes crude and comedic reviews for a porno magazine in Los Angeles. With long-term plans to retire as a director after making ten movies, Tarantino has confirmed that The Movie Critic will be his final film.

Considering it will supposedly serve as Tarantino's last hurrah, the stakes are high for The Movie Critic . Only one actor, who is also a past collaborator of Tarantino's, is officially confirmed to be starring in The Movie Critic , but another major movie star has been linked to the project as well. If the reports of the latter actor's casting come to fruition, The Movie Critic will mark these two stars' first onscreen collaboration since 1994.

The Movie Critic is expected to be released sometime in 2025.

10 Actors Quentin Tarantino Has Never Worked With That We'd Love To See In The Movie Critic

Quentin tarantino's the movie critic can reunite brad pitt & tom cruise, pitt & cruise's only movie together is interview with the vampire..

Brad Pitt will be starring in Tarantino's final movie , marking the actor-director duo's third collaboration. In addition to Pitt's confirmed casting, Tom Cruise is also reportedly linked to The Movie Critic (via CBR ). Cruise was actually considered for the role of Cliff Booth in Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood before Tarantino ultimately decided to go with Pitt instead. Not only would Tarantino redeem this missed opportunity to collaborate with Cruise by officially casting him in The Movie Critic, he would also be reuniting Cruise and Pitt onscreen for the first time in 30 years.

Brad Pitt won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Cliff Booth in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, marking the first and only Oscar win of his career so far.

In 1994, Pitt and Cruise co-starred in the gothic horror film Interview with the Vampire . At the time, Pitt was still an up-and-coming actor while Cruise was an established movie star, but their onscreen chemistry was undeniable. Interview with the Vampire marked the pair's first and only collaboration, as they've yet to star in another movie together since. If Cruise does end up starring in The Movie Critic , which is looking extremely likely , Tarantino would be fulfilling a wish three decades in the making.

Quentin Tarantino’s New Movie Ties A Big Brad Pitt Record After 15 Years

Why tom cruise & brad pitt are perfect for quentin tarantino's final movie, cruise & pitt have helped define modern cinema..

Pitt and Cruise starring in The Movie Critic together would be exciting because they'd finally be reuniting onscreen, but it would also be particularly fitting because of the subject matter and significance of the film itself. Similar to how Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was an homage to 1960s cinema, The Movie Critic will also celebrate filmmaking and criticism. The Movie Critic will also mark the end of the career of one of the most important directors of modern cinema, which is why it makes perfect sense for stars like Pitt and Cruise to be a part of it.

As two of the biggest movie stars who have managed to maintain longevity in their careers and are still relevant and working today, Pitt and Cruise are both flawless casting choices for a film like The Movie Critic .

In the years since Tarantino burst onto the scene in the early '90s with Reservoir Dogs, Pitt and Cruise have established themselves as some of the most prominent and enduring actors in Hollywood. Over the last 35 years, they've starred in movies like Fight Club and Jerry Maguire and franchises like Ocean's, Top Gun, and Mission: Impossible that helped shape modern cinema. As two of the biggest movie stars who have managed to maintain longevity in their careers and are still relevant and working today, Pitt and Cruise are both flawless casting choices for a film like The Movie Critic .

Tom Cruise's 2 New Movie Roles Are Even More Exciting Due To Breaking A 10-Year Trend

Brad pitt & tom cruise almost reunited in a different movie, the two actors could have starred in ford v ferrari..

Matt Damon and Christian Bale lean against a car in Ford v Ferrari.

Pitt and Cruise's long-awaited onscreen reunion nearly materialized in a different film a few years ago. Pitt and Cruise almost starred in Ford v Ferrari together in 2019 , back when it was still titled Go Like Hell . Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in 2013's Oblivion and would later reunite with him for 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, was originally attached to direct the sports biopic, but the project fell through due to its inflated budget.

" I wouldn’t say we got close to production," Kosinski noted, " but I got to the point where I had Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt at a table read reading the script together, which was pretty amazing ." The movie eventually came to fruition as Ford v Ferrari with James Mangold directing and Matt Damon and Christian Bale cast as the leads, dashing all hopes of Pitt and Cruise finally reuniting onscreen. Now, it looks like Pitt and Cruise may actually get their chance to finally star in another movie together if everything works out with The Movie Critic.
