Other need-to-know information about italy.

Italy is a country that obviously offers a wealth of tourism, sightseeing, and vacation experiences. A motorcycle tour with Planet Ride should be at the top of your list! The geography is especially diverse and makes for excellent riding wherever you go. If adventure is what you want, consider the mountain passes and hairpin turns in the far north of the country amid the Dolomites and the Alps. If the beach is where you want to cruise, Italy has extensive coastline along the Adriatic, Mediterranean, and Tyrrhenian Seas. If casual riding through rustic countryside is what you seek, there is the Piedmont region, famous for its wines, the beautiful rolling fields of Tuscany (also famous for its wines), the green hills and farmland of Umbria, the gorgeous glacial lakes of Lombardy, and other wonderful scenery.

You’re likely familiar with the famous cities of Rome, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Venice, and others. On your motorcycle tours Italy , you can venture into these cities, and you are bound to find art, history, architecture, and other aspects of the rich Italian culture. Beyond the cities, amongst the countryside and small towns, there is Cinque Terre and the Amalfi coast, both beautiful coastal areas, Lake Como and Lake Garda in the north, and much, much more!

Because of that geographical diversity, the climate of the country can vary significantly from one area to another. The inland northern and central regions tend to have hot and humid summers and cold, sometimes harsh, winters. The coastal areas, and much of the south, are more of a Mediterranean climate with rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Regardless of where you travel in the country, late spring through early fall are generally the best times to visit and the best times to ride.

Depending on where you are traveling from, you can arrive in Italy by plane, train, boat, car, and arguably the best method – motorcycle! All of the major cities mentioned above have international airports that are serviced by major international airlines, as well as Italy’s national airline (Alitalia), and several budget European airlines.

Choose the Planet Ride tour that excites you the most

Dolomites motorcycle tours.

The jagged, snow covered peaks of the Dolomites provide some great riding. High passes and mountain twisties provide great excitement for riders during the summer months. These same peaks provide winter recreationists with good skiing.

Roads and Riding

Roads through the Dolomites are generally good. Expect some high passes, sharp turns and views across valleys to the surrounding snow-capped mountains. The road can be narrow on descents. There may be snow on the road beginning in October, and it may last until April.

Climate and Environment, When to Go

The temperature in the mountains, even in summer, remains pleasant. If you ride in springtime, you will more likely be able to see snow on the surrounding peaks, which with their jagged profile, is spectacular. Weather in the mountains is changeable, especially in spring and autumn. It pays to be prepared with warm, layerable clothing and waterproof riding gear. The Dolomites are a pleasure to ride anytime, from mid May through very early October.

Sights, People, Food and Drink

Riding in the Dolomites means rounding corners and glimpsing jagged snow-covered peaks tucked between the beautiful mountains across the valley. This part of Italy was once part of the Tyrol of Austria, so many of the inhabitants of the Dolomites speak German. Food here, takes the best of the Italian and Austrian tradition and combines it.

Facts For the Traveler: Alto Adige/Südtirol province

Sicily motorcycle tours.

Sicily is Italy's largest island and the largest island in the  Mediterranean Sea , an ancient meeting point between East and West, Africa and Europe. It's also a geographical and  political region  of Italy, famed for its varied landscape, cuisine, and fascinating history. Because of its strategic location, Sicily has been invaded over the centuries by many armies and was once the site of Roman, Greek and Phoenician colonies. For history buffs and interested tourists, remnants of those cultures remain to this day.

Roads vary in quality. Some, like the main autostradas (motorways), are good, but small rural roads can be dodgy, especially after heavy rain when axle-breaking potholes appear and landslides lead to road closures. Sicily has a limited network of motorways, strade statali (state roads and Strade provinciali - provincial roads), which are sometimes little more than country lanes, but they provide access to some of the more beautiful scenery and the small towns and villages.

Sicily is blessed with a sunny climate, with coastal temperatures rarely dipping below 15°C. The best times to visit Sicily are April – June and September - October, when the weather is usually good, prices are lower, and there are fewer tourists. Late July and August are the peak of the high season: the sun broils, prices are inflated and the island’s top attractions are awash with a tide of holidaymakers. Most of Italy goes on holiday in this period (known as Ferragosto, literally ‘the August holiday’), and a significant chunk of the population chooses Sicily as its preferred destination.

Aside from history, architecture and natural beauties, one of Sicily’s greatest attractions is its food. Every village, town and city has a raucous, sense-exploding food market. Traditional recipes are wonderfully preserved, and the restaurants flirt with modern cuisine. The Sicilian attitude towards food is much like its character – a lot of tradition with just a sprinkling of modernity. Sicily ticks all the right boxes for any visitor: history, architecture, culture, food, beaches, and volcanoes – it’s all there. Still this island has more. Its special allure is within its people, whose loyalty to tradition keeps their culture aflame.

Facts for the Traveler

Tuscany motorcycle tours.

Tuscany is blessed with a postcard perfect countryside to ride in. Roads curve through lush green fields and over gentle rolling hillsides. Riders pass through medieval villages and Chianti wine grape vineyards. Tuscany also, has the great Renaissance cities, with their outstanding art and architecture.

The roads in Tuscany are very good, however Tuscany is a heavily touristed part of Italy and the roads can be busy, even in the spring and autumn. Expect some slowing and delays with tourist traffic in the countryside. Cities, especially Florence, can also be busy.

Tuscany's summers can be long and hot. The most comfortable riding weather is in the spring and autumn.

Tuscany's landscape is everything it is fabled to be. Riding through so much beauty is truly a pleasure. The medieval villages are delightful. The cities, especially Florence, deliver all the Renaissance treasures people expect from Italy. Tuscany's regional dishes range from hearty soups, pasta with cannellini (white beans) and grilled meats. Produce is locally-grown in the nearby countryside, as is the grapes to make the Chianti wine.

Facts For the Traveler: Tuscany

Sardinia motorcycle tours.

Sardinia is an island in the Mediterranean. Inhabited since Paleolithic times, Sardinia has seen an influx of foreigners over the centuries: Phoenicians, Romans, Pisans, Genovese and Spaniards. Each has left their legacy on Sardinia, though the proud Sardi have interpreted it in their own distinctive way.

Sardinia is geographically distinct and very different from mainland Italy. Ruggedly mountainous in the center of the island, adventurous motorcyclists will not be disappointed. The coastal routes follow stretches of beautiful Mediterranean seaside. Sardinia has experienced heavy infrastructure investment by the government, and the roads are in exceptional condition. You will find some of the best riding in Europe on Sardinia.

Sardinia is practically empty in the spring and fall, so motorcyclists have the roads to themselves. These roads are the best kept secret in Europe, for they are truly a pleasure to ride. Tourist traffic increases in the summer, especially in August, as many Europeans flock to the Sardinian coast for their summer holidays. Sardinia has a mild Mediterranean climate, and is nice to ride in at any time of year.

Sardinia has been inhabited since Paleolithic times, and the stone fortresses of this period, called nuraghe are still scattered throughout the island today. Though inhabited by a variety of invaders over the centuries, the Sardi remain a proud and independent people who have absorbed and interpreted all the different cultures in their own way. Meals in Sardinia will inevitably include seafood cooked with Mediterranean ingredients.

Cascina belbo, a luxury farmhouse b&b in the heart of the italian countryside..

We firmly believe that your vacation time is precious.  So finding the best roads, scenic views, places of interest and best places to eat can be a challenge especially when you have a limited time-frame. I can save you that time and effort . We have spent several years travelling this region (mostly on two wheels) searching out the best roads & biker friendly places to visit – and it would be our pleasure to share our experience with you.

As a “biker” you will appreciate the feeling of absolute freedom when riding a motorcycle. So combine that feeling with stunningly beautiful landscapes , virtually traffic free roads ,  a warm Italian welcome and unforgettable Italian cuisine . We hope that you will begin to understand why Italy is the perfect place to pursue your passion to ride, eat, sleep, repeat !!

WHERE you will RIDE

We are based in a renovated farmhouse  nestled in the forested hills just south of Turin in Piedmont, Italy.  This is probably the best location to begin any motorcycle adventure in this region. Due to our unique location there is an unbelievable diversity of roads and scenery literally on our doorstep.  The region of Piedmont is world famous for exquisite food & wine. The towns of Barolo & Alba, famous for probably the best red wines & white truffles are literally minutes from our farmhouse base .

motorcycle tours italy

Our  personally crafted rides  are deliberately “casual” & leisurely in nature with stops and photo opportunities at various strategic way-points. Finding unconventional “off the tourist trail” places is a personal passion, and it is always a pleasure to share these hidden cultural and gastronomic gems with our guests.

  Rest days

Our routes are designed to be interesting and leisurely but are occasionally  challenging. Therefore a moderate degree of competence in handling a “heavy” bike in tight turns is necessary. The rides are typically focused  in & around northern Italy, southern France & also Switzerland. They will take you to places and on roads less traveled. We seek out the unique places, scenery and rest stops that most travelers would otherwise pass by. We can also visit some of the more familiar Italian “hotspots” and often visit the historic cities of Florence, Pisa & Verona.

The rolling hills and UNESCO famed vineyard landscapes in Piedmont are an exquisite backdrop for a memorable ride on our own collection of legendary Harley-Davidson® motorcycles.

Just sicily – catania, join our guided motorcycle tours in italy.

Italy really has it all: history, culture, great food and wines, and, most of all, exciting roads to ride and amazing scenery to view .

In any direction we ride in Italy there is always something interesting to see and an array of beautiful minor roads to let our motorcycles roam freely.

Over the years we have developed our tours to give you the most complete sensations of what travelling through Italy is like. We have perfected our itineraries and places to stay in order to maximize riding pleasure combining this with sites to see, time to socialize and to enjoy the surroundings .

Our tours have now become longer. 12-15 days with less riders and shorter daily distances. This means that when you’re off the bike you’re not only catching your breath, refueling and getting ready to push on, you also get time to visit places, socialize, and relax.

Don’t get us wrong, riding is the essence of our tours and so we will keep you on the most spectacular roads, but we won’t let you have the sensation, I am pressed for time. We won’t compromise on quality of the rides just to make up time and tick off boxes. Our tours will leave you with the sensation of having lived the part of Italy you chose to visit, and not only the sensation of having simply ridden through it .

What we offer:

  • great itineraries
  • superb riding
  • great bikes (BMW, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Honda and Harley) equipped for touring
  • like minded riding companions from all over the world

Best motorcycle roads in Italy – plan your trip

From North to South ride the best motorcycle roads in Italy, explore its fascinating places and admire the beautiful architecture and views that take your breath away.

When you google what is Italy famous for? , the first 3 things that pop up are gelato , pasta and the Colosseum . And this is all good but, what we are really interested in, are its curves. Surely a woman with curves is smoking hot, but what about a sexy road ? Or 9 of those for that matter?

From the high alpine passes to the rolling hills of Tuscany and the balcony road of Amalfi Coast, Italy shows some serious curves that entice and excite motorcycle riders all over the world.

Forget about Dolce far Niente ( the sweetness of doing nothing ), let’s go outside and explore some of the best motorcycle roads in Italy .

You might ask yourself what devious (or genius) mind would construct such narrow, abrupt roads, that still service both ways making your heart pump like never before? Well, Italian engineer Carlo Donegani is responsible for what is considered to be one of the best roads in the World , Stelvio Pass.

motorcycle tours italy

1. Stelvio Pass – SS38

A high alpine road in the north of Italy, right on the border with Switzerland, Stelvio’s highest point is at 2757m, making it the highest paved mountain pass in Eastern Alps. The original road was built in 1820–1825 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Habsburg possession of Lombardy with Austria. The route has changed very little over time. Where: from Prato to Bormio Lenght: 21 km Turns: 75 hairpin turns, with the 48 curves on the northern side being known to be particularly very challenging. Incline: average percentage is 7.4 % When: from June to September Ride the road during week-days, early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Jeremy Clarkson from BBC’s Top Gear on Stelvio Pass: “ 15 miles of Asphalt spaghetti draped on an Alp ”.

2. Great Dolomites Road

The Dolomites are a mountain range in N-E Italy. This magnificent mountain route crosses the Dolomites passing trough South Tyrol, Trentino and Veneto and it is one of the most scenic routes in Italy. In 2009 the Dolomite Mountains were declared UNESCO World Heritage Site . It is considered one of the best motorcycle roads in Italy. Where: from Bolzano to Cortina D’Ampezzo Lenght: 110 km When: from June to September

Best Motorcycle Roads Italy 3. Lake Garda

The largest lake in Italy – Lake Garda is one of the most scenic roads in the World and a popular holiday destination. The lake offers some wonderful beaches for swimming, perfect to relax after a hot day on the motorcycle. North Eastern shore of the lake, with Limone sul Garda , offers some stunning views and best photo opportunities. Length: 140 km Duration: about 2h30min ride When: Spring and autumn are best as it will be less busy and give you the chance to really immerse yourself into Garda vibe. June to August is the busiest time of the year, and hotel prices sky high. We recommend to spend here a minimum of two nights in order to fully enjoy the atmosphere. Especially since the region hides the 8 th Wonder of the World , Tremosine Canyon, a.k.a. Strada della Forra .

motorcycle tours italy

4. Strada della Forra (SP38)

Scenes of Daniel Craig (007) driving an Aston Martin on Strada della Forra made their way around the World. James Bond escape scene was filmed right here. Hairpin bends, dark, narrow, rugged tunnels and fantastic views over Lake Garda lead you to Tremosine Gorge.

Where: shortly after Porto di Tremosine on the left, the road will take you on SP38 to Strada della Forra. Important: If you are tempted to enjoy the ride on reverse, please note that the road services only 1 way during certain hours for a distance of 3 km (for Tremosine Gorge), 1 way starting from Lake Garda shore. This might spoil the fun a bit, making your trip longer than anticipated. With the road being very narrow, and the traffic open for busses as well, 1 way was imposed during certain hours to ease traffic.

We recommend you to ride the entire SP38, leading from Tremosine Gorge to Piovere. You’re in for a treat. A narrow, twisting road, going up and down in the shade of the forest, a challenging, yet rewarding motorcycle ride that makes your blood boil. Remember to stop at the Belleview points to admire the panoramic view over Lake Garda and to enjoy an Italian expresso, so strong that your teeth get crooked. Length: about 20 km long Duration: 40 minutes

motorcycle tours italy

Best Motorcycle Roads in Italy 5. Lake Como

Passing through small Italian towns and villages from Colico to Lecco, SS36 is a short, smooth, scenic drive on the lake shore. Don’t miss out riding up on Piano dei Resinelli, on a narrow, winding road up to one of the most superb views over Lecco – Belvedere Parco Valentino. 15 hairpin turns will not only raise your adrenaline level but also the hair on your head, especially when meeting a car coming from the other side. You say narrow road we say Italy. Length: 60 km Duration: 1h20 min to Piano dei Resinelli You can find a nice camping site right opposite the entrance to the park and a small restaurant to catch your breath and gain some strength.

The walk to the Panorama view point takes about 30 min on a relaxed pace. Park your motorbike and change into something more comfortable. The walk will reward you with a view that takes your breath away.

6. Chiantigianna – the wine route of Chianti

Rolling hills, olive groves, Italian villages and charming castles surrounded by vineyards basking under the Tuscan sun – this is the wine route of Chianti. This is Chiantigiana . Where: from Florence to Siena, SR222 Length: 70 km Duration : 2 hours

Stop at Castello Vicchiomaggio and make a visit to the wine shop. If you spend the night in the area, dare to enjoy a wine tasting session. If you still ride for the day, buy a bottle of Chianti classico and continue your journey.

motorcycle tours italy

7. Amalfi Coast – SS163

Referred to as an outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape by Unesco, Costiera Amalfitana is one of the most scenic drives in the World, that is if you ride it outside summer season, during week-days and early in the morning. Otherwise, you’re in for a frustrating journey, on a hot summer day, on a very crowded road, not being able to fully enjoy the experience. Although narrow in part, busses are allowed, cutting the already sharp corners – making the connection between the 13 cities on its shore. Where: from Sorrento to Cetara Length: 55 km coastline Duration: 2 hours If you are around Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Cave) on a sunny day, you might be lucky enough to visit the cave. The clear sea water kissed by the rays of sun creates water reflections out of this world. When: Spring/Autumn, outside the summer season to avoid the crowds. Week-days are preferred to Week-ends. Early in the morning to better feel the riding experience.

Best Motorcycle Roads in Italy 8. Costa Marateea

Black lava beaches and shimmering turquoise blue sea make Costa Maratea’s landscape splendid. With a spectacular coast line, Costa Maratea – rivals with Amalfi Coast. Wilder, less travelled, Maratea is pure bliss even on a stormy day. If you add in the twists and turns, you got yourself an adventure.

9. Orientale Sarda Road – SS125

A sophisticated Italian island, Sardinia is known for the Emerald Coast, with turquoise/emerald waters, sandy beaches and some fantastic roads for motorcycle riders. A narrow, winding road snakes through the Sardinian country side. SS125 – Orientale Sarda is a rare find and one of the best motorcycle riding experiences you will ever have.  A balcony road making you feel like having tickets to a symphony of twists and turns followed by straight sections, and some more bends. And you have the best seat in the house! Break, lean and pull the throttle again to ride like a storm trough the next strait section. From: Arbatax to Dorgali Lenght: 68 km Duration: 1h40min Sheep, goats, and the amazing smell of flowers all over the island. Sardinia is in full spring in late October. When: from Spring to Autumn. Best to avoid the crowds during full summer season. How to get here: by ferry from Civitavecchia (near Rome), Napoli, Palermo (Sicilia) to Olbia or Cagliari

Gas prices:

In south of Italy, some highways are free and gas stations have different prices for the same product. Gasoline prices range between 1.65 euro to a little over 2 euros/liter. The difference is if your self-serve or if someone else fills the tank for you. Either way after a few days on the roads you will fill and spill using all languages of the world.

Join us on a fabulous motorcycle tour in Italy riding the most fascinating roads in the World and discovering the real meaning of dolce far niente . Be it on a luxury motorcycle tour with high end accommodation and plenty of relaxation or on a pure adventure tackling the rugged alpine passes, you are in for a one-of-a-kind experience. Colossal Alps Motorcycle Tour – takes you on some of the best motorcycle roads in Italy’s northern region, riding up to the highest peaks of the Alps Luxury Motorcycle Tours Europe gives you a more relaxed pace, exquisite accommodation, beach bars and the taste of Italy on a plate. All completed with a twist of Corse, an island belonging to France at a stone’s throw from Sardinia. Contact Adventure Motorcycle Tours and plan your journey.

Many companies offer motorcycle tours in Italy but as they are foreigners, obviously the knowledge of the place will never be the same as a local company. In fact, even if there are many options of motorcycle tours in Italy, we prefer to focus on “our area” : Tuscany.

motorcycle tours italy

Why Tuscany? Easy:

  • Tuscany is a big region with dozens of cities and towns everybody should see at least once in their life, like: Florence, Siena, Lucca, Pisa, Volterra, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano, Cortona, Arezzo, Massa Marittima and many more!
  • The countryside is just so beautiful and offers many different areas, from woods , to rolling hills , the Mediterranean Sea , the lunar landscape of the Crete Senesi.
  • The roads are really fun and you will enjoy the riding as much as the touristic visits.
  • The food: Tuscany is renown for its  food (pasta, meat, cheese…) and wine (Chianti, Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Sassicaia…)
  • In a few words: a motorcycle tour in Italy must include Tuscany and what we offer you is the option of discovering this region in a deep way , with local motorcyclist.

Join us on a beautiful motorcycle tour in southern Italy with incredible Mediterranean cuisine and a compelling history. This is the oldest Italy, rich of history and art, complex and contradictory…a land with a soul.

Starting from Rome, we will have fun walking along winding, scenic, desolate roads that cut these impervious mountains like razors, the "backbone" of Southern Italy. Stop in Montecassino, home to one of the most famous Abbeys in the world, before continuing towards Basilicata. We will visit and spend the night in Matera, the city of the "Stones". We’ll then continue in an uncontaminated landscape, towards the Tyrrhenian coast until we reach Maratea, in one of the most spectacular stretches of the Tyrrhenian Sea. From here, along one of the most beautiful coastal roads in Italy, we will enter the Cilento National Park, the real surprise of this trip, a place that few people know, let's get ready for the extraordinary!! At this point, "only" Positano and the Amalfi Coast are missing. We will visit the splendid villages overlooking the sea and the ancient city of Pompeii, before returning to Rome, the "Eternal City".

Tour stages

Day 1: welcome to rome.

Highlights: Rome

Welcome to Rome! Try to arrive a few days earlier to explore this "Eternal City", where time has stopped...those who have visited it undoubtedly define it as the most magnificent city in the world. We meet at the hotel, you will have some free time to relax or do some sightseeing before the safety briefing. Afterwards we will enjoy a welcome dinner together in a traditional Italian restaurant (Lazio regional cuisine).

Day 2: from Rome to Cassino km 257 / miles 160

Highlights: Arcinazzo plateaus, Simbruini mountains, Montecassino

We leave Rome following ring roads and a very short stretch of highway. In Tivoli, we take the ss5 Tiburtina, an ancient Roman consular road, which we will follow up to Arsoli. We follow the signs for Cervara di Roma and for the so-called road of the monasteries, that of S. Scolastica and S. Benedetto. We will cross natural parks with the usual state road that will lead us to the destination at the end of the day, Cassino, famous for the Abbey of Montecassino, one of the most famous in the world.

Day 3: from Cassino to Matera km 318 / miles 198

Highlights: ss90, the Murge, Gravina di Puglia

Long stage, the one of today. We will travel to another dimension, with the view that sweeps as far as the eye can see, the horizon limiting endless cultivated fields, the spectacular ss90, the fantastic Murge, the vision of Gravina di Puglia overlooking a limestone abyss, to end the day in Matera, the city of the Sassi, where we will have the whole day, tomorrow, to dedicate to it.

Day 4: Matera, rest day km 0 / miles 0

Highlights: Matera

In Matera, the contribution of our local guide who knows every corner will be fundamental. Only she is able to make you fall into the bowels of the city, up to the edge of the precipice, of the ravine. Today the entire site is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Matera was the location of famous films such as "The Passion" by Mel Gibson or the last chapter of the 007 saga, James Bond in "No Time To Die": In the evening, we will have dinner in a restaurant with an environment dug into the rock, warm and elegant, in which you can taste typical dishes of the Lucanian tradition.

Day 5: from Matera to Maratea km 268 / miles 166

Highlights: ss7, Dolomiti Lucane, Accettura, Sinnica, Maratea

Departure in the morning from Matera. Irsina, Grottole, Grassano, Tricarico, small villages located along the ss7, another Roman consular. There are mountains here called "Little Lucanian Dolomites", which are not "small" and we will cross them. We continue, Accettura, Grumentum, Corleto Perticara, fantastic places along the way, among different scenarios, surprising, forgotten roads, our roads, those that we hope will inspire you, to reach the end of the stage, on the sea.Maratea for the beauty of its landscapes is nicknamed “the pearl of the Tyrrhenian”.

Day 6: from Maratea to Positano km 270 / miles 168

Highlights: SS18, Cilento National Park, Di Lascio cheese factory

You leave Maratea driving along the coast, the fantastic ss18, the seaside resorts follow one another: Scario, Marina di Camerota and Palinuro, the mythical helmsman of Aeneas, after a lot of sea we now continue along the splendid internal roads of the National Park. From Montano Antilia, the highest town in Cilento, the ss18, yes always it, will give the best of itself. The last episode on the sea to touch Acciaroli and Castellabate before diving into the chaotic traffic of the Battipaglia plain. We are at the end on the Amalfi coast, the destination of the journey!

Day 7: Positano Loop Pompeii km 117 / miles 73

Highlights: Pompeii

In these few days you will have realized that Positano is a very famous tourist destination with pebble beaches and narrow and steep streets full of shops and cafes. Optional an excursion to Capri, the island par excellence, which well represents the Gulf of Naples, famous for its steep area, exclusive hotels and shopping.

Day 8: Positano, rest day km / miles 0

Highlights: Positano, visit Capri

Day 9 : from Positano to Rome km 359 / miles 223

Highlights: Sorrento Peninsula

We are in the home straight, but back on the saddle, on our last day of travel we will cross the Sorrentine Peninsula again, on an alternative route, short but with an impressive sequence of curves, to arrive in the late morning at the entrance to the motorway that will allow us to close the trip to the capital and return the bikes in the afternoon.

Day 10: Goodbye!

We say goodbye after breakfast, hoping that you have enjoyed your motorcycle tour through the most beautiful destinations in Italy. If you want you can spend a few more days in the beautiful city of Rome. Thank you, see you on the next motorcycle tour with Landsails Motorcycle Tours!

Best food experience

The typical dishes of Italian gastronomy and the flavors of tradition that combine taste and territory. Guide, naturally by motorbike, to regional cuisine:

For mussel lovers this is a must that you just can't give up, especially in the summer season. This dish has only two ingredients: mussels and pepper. Someone also adds parsley or lemon squeezed.

Suggested wine: Falanghina.

Art & History

Food / wine, where we ride – what we see – what we hear, day1 - welcome to rome.

A private car will transfer you from the airport to the hotel where you will find your Hear The Road host Enrico, waiting to give you a warm Italian welcome. Late morning/early afternoon arrival is recommended.

After you’ve put your luggage in the room and taken a good refreshing shower, we convene in the bar of the hotel for a “Meet and Greet” with your tour colleagues. Then we are ready to go to pick up the bikes and bring them to the hotel garage.

Back to the hotel Enrico gives you a general briefing of the tour and will be very glad to answer to all your questions.

Finally we are ready to go all together to taste the “Welcome Dinner”, where you’ll learn more about what to expect for the next exciting week. OVERNIGHT IS IN ROME.

Highlights:

Meet your motorcycle, Meet your guide, Meet your fellow riders, Welcome Dinner.

Day2 - Rome to Siena

We head north towards Tuscia, an area once inhabited by the Etruscans. This is also one of Italy’s biggest hazelnut grove areas, the small nut that Ferrero magically transforms into the famous Nutella spread.

After a short break for your first good Italian coffee on the road in Civita Castellana, we get back on the bikes and ride, first the beautiful coastline roads that run along the shores of Lake Vico and Lake Bolsena, and then the scenic backroads of Val D’Orcia – a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We arrive in Radicofani where we stop for lunch. Radicofani is a stunning Orange Flag awarded town (The Orange Flag Award was an idea formed by the Italian Touring Club in 1998 with the aim of promoting tourism in lesser known places in Italy) which surrounds the base of a hill on which the majestic fortress has stood since 973AD.

On the way to Siena we visit the tiny village of Bagno Vignoni, another fantastic little medieval village with its characteristic piazza boasting an enormous 16th-Century thermal bathtub is truly fascinating!

Your first dinner in Siena is courtesy of Hear the Road…you will be pampered by the delicious dinner that Mrs. Letizia, proprietor of a lovely 16th century Inn has prepared for you to celebrate your first riding day in heart of Italy. OVERNIGHT IS IN SIENA (The hotel has an infinity pool with a spectacular view of Siena).

Tuscia Viterbese, Civita Castellana, Val D’Orcia, Radicofani, Bagno Vignoni, Homemade dinner.

Day3 - Siena to Siena - Chianti Loop

Are you ready to be blown away by the stunning roads of Tuscany? Spectacular landscapes, art, first-class food and wine! In the first part of the morning we head south riding on roads that are a true paradise for motorcyclists: wide bends, scenic stretches of asphalt, incredible landscapes, miles of vineyards, and dozens of stately villas.

Our first stop is San Galgano where we vist its stunning Abbey without the ceiling, and the little church of Montesiepi home to our very own “sword in the rock.

Back on the bikes we reach the gorgeous hilltown of San Gimignano, a splendorous Medieval atmosphere enwrapped by its 13th-Century wall, also known as “la città delle torri” (the city of towers). “A masterpiece of creative human genius, it is unique testimony to a past civilization, and as an exceptional exemplar of both architectonic complex and landscape, demonstrates significant passages in human history.” It is for such qualities that San Gimignano earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.

Back on the bikes we still cruise less known roads of the Chianti Region heading north to Greve in Chianti, the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the famous Italian explorer who first sailed into New York Bay.

Back on the saddle we head South to Siena, for more exciting kilometers along the sweeping roads of Chianti.

Yes, today is a day that you’ll will remember fondly when you are back home! OVERNIGHT IS IN SIENA.

San Galgano, San Gimignano, Chianti Region, Greve in Chianti.

Day4 - Free day in Siena

There is so much to see and do in Siena, so we chose this as our ‘Free’ day, where you can visit Siena on your own.

The town of Siena Start from Piazza del Campo, or – as the Italian simply call it – “Il Campo”, where the famous Palio horse-race is held. The town is a trophy of Medieval Art, the most prolific period of Siena. The square has the shape of an amphitheatre, looking at the Palazzo Publico, a masterpiece of Civil Gothic architecture. The square is on a gentle slope, climbing gently towards the Fonte Gaia, by Jacopo della Quercia. Above the building you’ll see the Mangia Tower, antagonist of the nearby Cathedral. The Civic Centre is only a few steps away from the religious part of Siena, where you can admire the gothic lines that merge with the Medieval architecture of the Duomo dell’Assunta, one of the most beautiful buildings of this period.

Around the Catheral there are several important buildings: the Palazzo Arcivescovile, the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala (now the National Archaeological Museum), the Palazzo del Governatore, the Opera Metropolitana Museum, and the 14th century Palazzo Piccolomini, also known as Palazzo delle Papesse. And between a church and an historic building you will be able to do some wonderful shopping.

For those who prefer to ride, we’ve organized an afternoon day ride led by Enrico that leaves from and returns to our hotel in Siena.

Tonight we enjoy a great wine tasting, and then we will put our legs under the table for another superb homemade dinner, courtesy by Hear The Road. OVERNIGHT IN SIENA.

Siena at your pleasure, Wine tasting and Homemade dinner.

Day5 - Siena to Orvieto

We leave Siena heading south towards the Crete Senesi, famous for its stunning moonscape.

After a short break in the little medieval village of Trequanda, we continue on to the beautiful city of Pienza, considered to be the incarnation of a Renaissance utopia and an ideal city. Having obtained recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, today it continues to show off to the world its refined and sophisticated Renaissance urban plan. Its spaces and perspective into its 15th-Century “piazze and palazzo” are organized according to the era’s ideals of rationality and humanism.

After lunch we saddle up again for a fantastic plunge on the winding roads of the “Green Umbria”, heading towards Orvieto where we’ll spend the next 3 nights.

Just to finish the day in the best possible way, we’ll experience a classic “Umbrian Tasting Dinner”, washed down with local wines that the hotel produces from the vineyards that surround it. Dinner is courtesy by Hear The Road. OVERNIGHT IS IN ORVIETO (The hotel in Orvieto has spectacular ‘spa’ amenities such as, an outdoor Jacuzzi, a spa with whirlpool swimming pool, Turkish bath, and sauna…Getting pampered is all part of the experience!).

Crete Senesi, Trequanda, Pienza, Sarteano.

Day6 - Orvieto to Orvieto - Hot Springs Loop

Today is a day that we can call a relaxing day!

From Orvieto we head West towards Pitigliano where we stop briefly to take in the sights of this beautiful walled-village, characterized by its parapets, ceramic tile roofs and multi-tiered buildings, perched on layers of red volcanic tuff stone.

Back on the bikes we ride the scenic roads of the Maremma Toscana, – land of the “butteri” (the typical local cowboy) and brigands – where each town and village boast origins lost in the mists of time, and then we reach the Terme di Saturnia (Saturnia Spa), where we spend a big part of the day immersed in the hot spring waters.

On the way back to Orvieto we challenge again the scenic and surprising roads in the heart of Italy!

Dinner is at your leisure. OVERNIGHT IS IN ORVIETO.

Pitigliano, Saturnia Spa, San Casciano Bagni.

Day7 - Orvieto to Cascia

This day will be completely spent on the backroads of Umbria, which, despite being one of the smallest Italian regions, has an amazing variety of scenery and lots of art towns worth a visit. Our first stop will be the spell-binding view of Civita di Bagnoregio, a tiny hamlet suspended in mid-air, surrounded by silent and superb ravines.

Back on the bikes we are ready to ride the beautiful coastline road of lake Corbara which bring us to Todi, a magnificent medieval town.

After lunch we’re off again for another couple of surprising hours. From one moment to the next the scenery will change from the gentle slopes scattered with vineyards and olive-groves and overlooked by hill-top villages, to a more rugged and sometimes apparently unwelcoming landscape, where small towns cling to the steep mountain sides.

We will arrive in Cascia where we’ll spend our last night on tour. We’ll meet for dinner to celebrate our great day and then: time for bed! Another great adventure is in store for us tomorrow, with our hearts, throttles and eyes wide open. OVERNIGHT IN CASCIA.

Civita di Bagnoregio, Lake Corbara, Todi, Cascia.

Day8 - Cascia to Rome

It may be our last riding day, back to Rome, but certainly not an unforgettable day as we ride along some of the best roads of Umbria and Lazio.

We’ll start the day in a big way, devouring the 28-kilometres that climb up towards Castelluccio, famous for its immense and colourful lentil-flower plane. We are in the heart of the National Park of the Monti Sibillini, the land of shepherds and breeders, hard-working men and women whose ancient art puts on our tables incredible cheeses and cured meats.

On the way back to Rome we will stop to admire the Marmore Falls that were created by the Romans in 271 BC to drain the swamps above the Nera River: an engineering feat that has become one of the most spectacular natural attractions of Umbria.

Then we wind our way back to Rome on other scenic roads. After returning the bikes we arrive at the hotel with time to freshen up before getting together for our “Tour Celebration” dinner, courtesy of Hear the Road. OVERNIGHT IN ROME.

Monte Sibillini National Park, Marmore Falls, Farewell Dinner.

Day9 - Departure day

Time to say goodbye, shop for any last minute souvenirs, and pack your bags. After breakfast, guests will be transferred to the airport in conjunction with their departure schedule.

Testimonials

Cooking class in Tuscany with Motorcycle Tours Italy

Ken & Gina B.

My wife and I took the Umbria/Tuscany this August. The tour was fantastic. The other people in the group were great. The accommodations were first class. It was clear Enrico did his homework planning this tour. As this was a motorcycle tour we road motorcycles. The rental bikes were all in good shape and we got exactly what we reserved. Enrico planned into the rides plenty of breaks either to eat, tour a small town or just relax and enjoy the scenery. The riding was invigorating but as Enrico says on his webpage this is not a ride to learn how to ride a motorcycle. The Italians do not ride/drive like Americans and you will be riding like Italians. The riding is often quick paced and often on old Italian roads. Sometimes narrow curvy roads, sometimes cobblestone. Italians lane split and love to pass the vehicles in front of them. If you enjoy spirited riding you will love it. With that said you will never be pressured to ride outside of your comfort zone. Enrico does his best to accommodate everyone. You can ride at your own pace. Often my wife and I would slow down to enjoy the scenery as other riders wanted to ride faster. Enrico would wait for us to catch up further down the road. This was a great trip and my wife and I have been talking about how much fun it was ever since.

A well deserved relax after the beautiful sweeping Tuscany roads

So you say to your friends “I’m going to Italy to ride a bike….in August….in Tuscany” and the first reaction is…..wow a crowded and hot summer on Italian roads! But let me assure that it’s quite the opposite. Not only did we feel like we had the entire Italian countryside to ourselves, we felt like we were in the best and most hospitable hands and places in the entire country! Granted Italy is a special place, but really much of the credit goes to company founder and tour leader Enrico Grassi. It takes a special skill to know the right road, the right detour, the right coffee shop to make you feel like you are both at home and away, a local and a special visitor and Enrico knows how to push all the right buttons. From total ride time, to road conditions, to excellent views, great restaurants and accommodations, this tour has a little bit of everything! You want to tour Rome and get some history, check! You want to sit back in a piazza and relax over a nice meal and excellent wine, check! You want to haul ass on a nice twisty road with open corner after corner after corner, check! check! check! This was my first time riding in Europe and I don’t regret the tour choice one bit. A great way to whet my appetite and keep me coming back for more! Corsica, Sardinia here we come! Ciao Enrico!!!

Tuscany is beautiful with Hear The Road

My partner and I had been to Italy before, or taken a guided motorcyle tour. We were blown away. Enrico planned every day perfectly. The hotels were top notch, with a true taste of Italian style. We loved our room at Alta Rocca in Orvieto, with a view of the vineyards from our window and balcony. Our stay for three nights at Podera della Strega in Siena was storybook, with breakfasts every morning outside, overlooking the valley and Siena. Our host, Ms. Leticia, was fabulous. The food was marvelous, from the multicourse meal and wine at the resort in Orvieto, to the roadside stops for paninis and cafe. Enrico seems to know all the best roads in Italy. Endless twisties and tornanti (hairpin turns) with breathtaking views. And best of all was the camaraderie of the group. Evening, after evening, of good food and wine with friends. Take one of Enrico's tours. I promise you will NOT be disappointed.

Clients happy with Hear The Road

David & Arlene A.

The Tuscany and Umbria tour exceeded our expectations! Pictures alone don’t do it justice. Your jaw will drop at every bend of the road. The scenery is unbelievable and every one of your senses will be stimulated. And while your jaw is open, take the time to shove some porchetta in it. It is “bunga bunga” for your taste buds. You will not be disappointed. You must experience the countryside firsthand, and the best way is by motorcycle. Enrico is a first class guide and host. I can honestly say that the worst part of the tour was coming home. We miss Italy. We miss Enrico! We will be back soon to Hear The Road!

Experience the challenging curves of beautiful Tuscany
