Travel & Tourism Industry

International travel plays a critical role in the US economy. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2019, international visitors spent $233.5 billion experiencing the United States; injecting nearly $640 million a day into the U.S. economy. The U.S. travel and tourism industry generated $1.9 trillion in economic output; supporting 9.5 million American jobs and accounted for 2.9% of U.S. GDP. At 14.5% of international travel spending globally, international travelers spend more in the United States than any other country. As recovery efforts continue, the International Trade Administration actively supports the industry via the twin pillars of the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) and the U.S. Commercial Service . Working together, we provide a range of data and related products to support the international outreach and promotion efforts of U.S. destinations and attractions. With over 100 offices throughout the United States and in 75 countries around the world, we are where you are and where you want to be.

What We Do For You:

  • Promote U.S. policies that encourage the competitiveness of the U.S. travel industry
  • Provide business counseling, match-making and promotional support services to help U.S. destinations and attractions penetrate new markets and increase market share
  • Seek to ensure that U.S. regulations and other programs do not adversely impact U.S. industry competitiveness
  • Provide information, trade data, and market analysis to the U.S. travel industry, partners and policy makers
  • Maintain close relationships with the U.S. travel industry to focus and construct programs that enhance the industry’s competitiveness and overseas profile

17 Travel & Tourism VC Investors that can Fund Your Startup

With a recovery in full swing within the travel and tourism industry, it’s time to get back to business to meet people’s wanderlust desires. Now that things are opening up again people are more excited than ever to travel and have experiences.

travel_tourism_VCs

Julia Simpson, president and CEO of WTTC (The World Travel & Tourism Council) says “Our latest forecast shows the recovery significantly picking up this year as infection rates subside and travelers continue benefiting from the protection offered by the vaccine and boosters. As travel restrictions ease and consumer confidence returns, we expect a welcome release of pent-up travel and tourism demand.”

Businesses have managed to survive through innovative new marketing tactics which encouraged people to travel locally and pivots to accommodate limitations. This is how Airbnb managed to overcome the toughest times of the pandemic. Their marketing strategy encouraged people to get out of the house and explore areas around them.

According to TechCrunch “High-profile funding rounds also appear to be popping up across travel and hospitality’s various sub-sectors, including bookings, activity marketplaces, short-term rental, tourism and hotel platforms. And companies are continuing to pull in funding rounds in the hundreds of millions to billion-dollar range.”

The pandemic gave rise not only to a new way of traveling but also changed the way people want to travel and gave them new opportunities to do so. Investments in alternative accommodation startups and other businesses in this area have been on the rise and seems as though the trend will continue from 2021.

With remote work now being an option to the majority of people, we’re seeing new huge growth opportunities for coworking, coliving, and traveling. Companies like HiveGeist launched last year to offer travelers stylish modern accommodations and offer a place to meet and work with other digital nomads. PhocusWire reports “other significant rounds have gone into vacation home co-ownership startup Pacaso with $125 million and Outdoorsy with $120 million while luxury rental company Kocomo with $56 million, Holidu with $45 million and Getaway with $42 million, also benefited from excitement in the segment.”. Along with large investments going to alternative accommodation, hotel technology companies have also received considerable interest from VC’s.

Skift’s report on Venture Investment Trends in 2022, revealed that “travel startups raised $8.6 billion last year, a figure that’s 90 percent of 2019 levels and a 73 percent increase from 2020.” and we predict this will continue to be on the rise. As well CNN reported , “travel and tourism could generate $8.6 trillion globally this year, according to new research by the World Travel & Tourism Council. That’s just 6.4% below pre-pandemic levels.”

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council :

  • U.S. domestic Travel & Tourism spending is forecast to reach more than $1.1 trillion for the year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 11.3%
  • International traveler spending in the U.S. could see growth of $113 billion, compared to 2020, reaching nearly $155 billion, slightly below (14%) 2019 levels
  • Employment in the sector could also surpass pre-pandemic levels, reaching nearly 16.8 million jobs, above pre-pandemic levels by almost 200,000 jobs

Despite success, Duluth mayor wants to review out-of-town tourism partnership

D ULUTH — Mayor Roger Reinert said he wasn't sold on keeping the city's out-of-town marketing firm after its contract expires at the end of the year, announcing a potential change Wednesday to a controversial decision made by former Mayor Emily Larson.

Larson, intending to expand the city's reach, recommended Edina-based Bellmont Partners in 2021 to take over tourism marketing from the city's longstanding convention and visitor's bureau, Visit Duluth. The City Council selected Bellmont for a $1.8 million contract and Visit Duluth accepted a smaller slice of the work after steering the city's marketing since the 1930s.

Tourism in Duluth, a city of about 87,000, is a nearly $1 billion industry.

In the last couple of years, tourism tax revenue in Duluth has seen significant growth even while factoring in inflation, reaching a record high of nearly $15 million in 2023. It was up nearly 7% from the previous year and nearly 20% from 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Hotel occupancy last year was also higher than the state average.

Reinert said Wednesday that the city has many talented creative people to do the work, and he hopes to end up with more tourism tax revenue staying in Duluth.

"I fundamentally believe — and I said this over and over again during the campaign and so walking that talk here today — that it's hard to tell an authentic Duluth story if you're not a Duluthian," he said at a news conference inside City Hall.

Karen Pionk will helm a newly formed working group that will review the contract with Bellmont, a public relations firm, and its partner, advertising agency Lawrence & Schiller. It will also analyze the city's proposal request for tourism marketing. Pionk is general manager of the Sheraton in Duluth and a board member of Visit Duluth.

Tourism is one of Duluth's economic engines, Pionk said, and reviewing the last few years is important to ensure tourism revenue is spent in a way that benefits the city. She doesn't discredit Bellmont's work, she said, but she agrees with Reinert that a local perspective is important.

Reinert said the existing set-up may remain at the end of the year, but with the change in city leadership he wanted the chance to examine it. He put together a similar group to look at the city's 2020 decision to close Lester Park golf course.

Unlike the previous process that resulted in the selection of Bellmont, Reinert said, he wouldn't have other advertising agencies review proposals to avoid conflicts of interest. However, one of his working group's members is Anna Tanski, who was CEO of Visit Duluth in 2021.

More than 20 Duluth neighborhoods experienced growth in visits from tourists in 2023, said Tricia Hobbs, the city's economic developer who is focused on tourism.

Visit Duluth under Bellmont is data-driven, representatives have said, and uses a mix of social, paid and "earned" media, TV spots and a website in its efforts. Its 2022 marketing campaign gave the city a new slogan and logo, and the city recently won an award from the state's Explore Minnesota agency for a campaign that created a "welcoming experience" for visitors.
