Book Fjord Cruise here. Here you will experience the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord (UNESCO World Heritage) in a fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen. The boats from The Fjords run on batteries that are charged with electricity from short-distance hydroelectric power. The boat trips are both sustainable, climate-friendly and silent, which makes the trips on the fjord an even better experience.

Numerous wild and beautiful waterfalls and rivers characterize the landscape, crossing the rugged mountains and deciduous and coniferous forests on their way down to the fjords. Beautiful villages with a sustained cultivated landscape with remainders of old farms and mountain pastures and unique cultural monuments gives a extra dimension to the dramatic natural landscape.

A fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord can be done both ways. You can start the fjord cruise from Flåm or from Gudvangen . You can do a round trip or one way only, starting from Flåm or from Gudvangen. We recommend you to do a round trip. Pictures and video from a fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen

Here you start at Flåm and are sailing out the Aurlandsfjord and then round Mt Beitelen and enter the Nærøyfjord. The fjord cruise will then continue to Gudvangen at the innermost part of the Nærøyfjord. At Gudvangen you can visit Njardarheimr Viking Village .

The Fjord Cruise on the video below is from autumn, late October. Here are some words that I got from a tourist who was on the same fjord cruise that day. He posted the comment on a timelapse video I made from the fjord cruise:

– My girlfriend and I were on this cruise that day and it was truly a magical morning. The water was like glass and the rising sun kept changing the mountain views all around us as we silently glided through the fjord.

Here you start at Gudvangen and are sailing out the Nærøyfjord and into the Aurlandsfjord to Flåm at the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord . Flåm is a great base for exploring the fjords, valleys, mountains and viewpoints in the area.

And the best thing of all, you can visit Flåm Bakery and have a coffee and something good to eat. If you want a great burger or pizza and something good to drink, Flåm Marina is the place to go. Flåm Marina also has the best fjord view in Flåm. Flåm Camping and Hostel is a nice campsite within walking distance of the center of Flåm.

Flåm is a fantastic starting point for many great dventures in beautiful and wild nature. Where the Aurlandsfjord ends, the Flåmsdalen Valley starts.

If the Aurlandsfjord is an adventure, the Flåmsdalen Valley is an even more beautiful adventure, and both should be experienced.

You can see and do a lot with Flåm as a starting point. In Flåm there are many places to eat and sleep. It is also a short distance to other beautiful fjords where you can visit idyllic fjord villages and experience beautiful and dramatic nature.

Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord – What to See and Do

FJORDS NORWAY - The UNESCO Protected Nærøyfjord

Flåm, Aurland and Gudvangen are perfect starting points for experiences in and around the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, two of the world’s most beautiful and dramatic fjords. On 14 July 2005, the Nærøyfjord together with the Geirangerfjord became part of our common UNESCO’s world heritage .

From Flåm you can take part in a fjord safari or a fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. You can take this fjord cruise as a round trip (both ways) or one way combined with bus between Flåm and Gudvangen. See the great view from Stegastein viewpoint , 650 meters above Aurland . Taste the local goat’s cheese in Undredal or in Skjerdal , two villages by the Aurlandsfjord.

Flåm Railway is the train journey from fjord to mountain, perhaps the most beautiful railway in the world. You can combine this train journey with cycling along Rallarvegen which goes from the high mountains via Flåmsdalen Valley to Flåm. Aurlandsdalen Valley is one of Norway’s most popular hikes. The lower part of Aurlandsdalen, which is also the most popular, starts from Østerbø and ends at Vassbygdi in Aurland.

The Flåm Valley is a beautiful adventure. The valley between Myrdal (866.8 masl) and Flåm by the Aurlandsfjord is 18 kilometer long. The valley is narrow and the mountains are steep, and there are waterfalls and rivers wherever you turn around. Flåm Valley is a great place for hiking and biking . Flåm Zipline sends you off at over 100 kilometers per hour, you are just hanging in a thin steel wire high above the valley.

By the Nærøyfjord, we have the small villages of Gudvangen , Bakka, Styvi and Dyrdal. Styvi is the only place without permanent inhabitants during the winter, and is together with Dyrdal without road connection. Gudvangen is one of two ports where the iconic ferry trip along the inner part of the Sognefjord departs and arrives. Visit the Viking village Njardarheimr in Gudvangen and experience the history and culture of the Viking Age.

The Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord are both part of the 204 kilometer long Sognefjord which is located in the northern part of the county of Vestland, in the middle of Western Norway.

How to travel to the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord area

Many roads lead to the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord area.

It is easy to travel to Flåm and Aurland, the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord. Almost “all roads” go to Flåm and Aurland , and you can also travel there by train, bus and boat. It is only a short distance between the two neighboring villages of Flåm and Aurland.

You can start this fjord adventure by train from Oslo or Bergen to Myrdal station. Then you get to experience the Bergen Railway between Oslo and Bergen and Flåm Railway , one of Norway’s most spectacular railway lines, from Myrdal station to Flåm, which is located down by the Aurlandsfjord . If you take Flåm Railway, you get to experience the beautiful Flåmsdalen valley at the same time.

There are several daily bus departures between Oslo/Bergen and Flåm.

The nearest airport is Sogndal Airport at Haukåsen near Kaupanger. Most flights that go to and from Sogndal Airport come from and go to Oslo and Bergen. From the airport to Flåm, it is 70 kilometers by road, including a wonderful crossing of the Sognefjord by ferry.

It’s a small town, but has a bustling feel to it thanks to the Flam Railway, which takes passengers to scenic viewpoints as well as nearby towns and all the way to some of Norway’s largest cities.

In addition to the wondrous scenery, you’ll find shops and restaurants in Flam. Norway cruises to Flam typically sail in the summer months when the weather is warm and the days are long thanks to the sun still shining long into the night.

Top sights & landmarks for cruises to flam, scenic flam railway.

A journey you’ll be glad you didn’t miss out on while in Flam is the Flam Railway (also referred to locally as Flamsbana) that travels round-trip from Flam to Myrdal. The two-hour journey is considered to be one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. You’ll travel as high as 2,841 feet as you make your way up the mountain plateau to Myrdal and glide past valleys and waterfalls, including the magnificent Kjosfossen waterfall.

Scenic Cruise of Nærøyfjord

While in Flam, get up close and personal with the nearby fjords on a scenic cruise of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Nærøyfjor, one of Norway’s most picturesque fjords. Sailing along Nærøyfjor takes you past waterfall-laden cliffs, quaint waterside villages like Undredal, and mountains jutting 5,900 feet into the air.

Viking Valley Njardarheimr in Gudvangen

In nearby Gudvangen (located about 12 miles from Flam), you’ll find a replication of an authentic Viking village that is sure to delight visitors of all ages. You’ll meet people dressed in character as Vikings who will help teach you more about the history of the Vikings in Norway and the civilization’s lifestyle and culture.

Top Things to Do in Flam

Flam railway museum.

If the Flam railway fascinates you, head inside the Flam Railway Museum to learn more about the construction of the railway. It isn’t a large museum so won’t take up too much time.

Brekkefossen Waterfall Hike

Hiking through the incredible terrain of the Norwegian Fjords region is an awe-inspiring way to spend your day during a Flam cruise port of call. The Brekkefossen Waterfall hike is close to the town center and only takes two to three hours round trip for most people. Be aware, though, that it is quite steep in parts, so you’ll want good hiking shoes. The hard parts of the hike will be worth it, however, once you reach the gorgeous Brekkefossen waterfall.

Stegastein Viewpoint

A narrow road with twists and turns brings you to Stegastein viewpoint, where on a clear day you can enjoy one of the best views of the fjords in the whole area. It’s really nice to see, but note that Stegastein viewpoint is located about half an hour’s drive from Flam and requires a car (or a guided tour) to get there.

Food and Drink Spots Near the Flam Cruise Port

Flam’s restaurants and cafes are conveniently located within walking distance of the Flam cruise port. You’ll find that the cuisine of Flam is quite hearty. Traditional food to try in Flam includes Raspeball, a potato dumpling that is a popular side dish in Norway; cold mutton and pork that has been cured; fresh fish, particularly Herring and cod; freshly caught crab; and cheese made from local cow or goat milk. You meal will also typically be served with a serving of bread.

Local produce you can find during the Flam fjord cruise season includes rhubarb, blueberries, pears, rowanberries, plums, and mushrooms.

Culture & History in Flam

Flam’s small-town roots are centered in farming, though today most of the population (which hovers at just around 400 people) works in the tourism industry. Tourism has been a part of the area for a while, with the first travelers making the journey to Flam as far back as the late 1800s. These wealthy travelers were nicknamed “salmon lords” and would travel from England to Flam in order to fish the Flam River. Before long, hotels and other tourism infrastructure sprung up, helping to make Flam what it is today, which is one of the most popular travel destinations in Norway.

The railway line also made a big impact on Flam, which began construction in 1923 and started operating regularly in 1942.

Flam Port Facilities & Location

Your Flam cruise ship will pull into Aurland Harbour. Fjord cruise passengers often love this port of call due to its ease of access to the town. The cruise ship terminal in Flam doesn’t have any services or amenities, but that’s not a problem since it’s only about a five-minute walk to all of the town’s sites, restaurants, and shops.

Transportation in Flam

Flam is located off of the E16 highway, which also connects to the major cities of Oslo and Bergen. A car is the usual method to get around Flam and the surrounding region for those not taking the train for a journey. However, be aware that there is only one car rental office in Flam and it books up early. The local bus system has minimal routes, but you will find service to Aurland from Flam. Another fun way to get around town and the surrounding valley is by bike.

Shopping Near the Flam Cruise Port

Traditional Norwegian souvenirs that you can find on a Flam fjord cruise port of call include Norwegian’s signature knitwear, troll figurines, and cheese utensils. Another souvenir to get that is unique to Flam is a pair of shoes from Aurlandskoen, a shop that sells loafer-style shoes made in nearby Aurland. If you take a ride on the train and want a souvenir to remember that trip by, stop in the shop at the Railway Museum.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

You won’t find the Euro here since Norway is not part of the European Union like its neighbors Denmark and Sweden. Instead, you’ll use Norwegian krone. Flam fjord cruise passengers will find that many local businesses only accept cash, so it’s wise to exchange some money for Norwegian krone before leaving for your trip. If you find yourself needing more cash while in Flam, there’s an ATM only a minute’s walk from the ship at Aurland Sparebank.

When dining out, tipping is appreciated, though you’re not expected to tip as much as you may be used to in the U.S. Instead, the customary tip amount in Norway is 6% to 10% of your total bill.

Insider’s Guide to Flåm, Norway

Moderately Adventurous

Encouraging women to try adventurous travel

Norway – Flåm Fjord Cruise

One of the most scenic fjords in the world, the Naeroyfjord is best seen from the water. With glass-like water and steep mountain walls, every picture is a dream. Definitely worth seeing on the Flam-Gudvagen fjord cruise

If there is one thing you must do while in the Fjordlands of Norway, it’s taking a Fjord Cruise. And the type of cruise I am talking about is a 2-4 hour day cruise on the dark fjord waters, surrounded by steep mountains and waterfalls. Sound dreamy? That’s because it is. There are many Fjords to choose from, but two stand out as absolute beauties – Nærøyfjord and Griengerfjord. Since we were driving from Oslo, we opted to explore the Fjords that were a bit further south and finally settle on a one-way Flåm Fjord Cruise to get to Gudvagen with Lustrabaatane . It was by far and away my favorite way to explore the fjords. With moving clouds and calm water, the Flåm Fjord Cruise was dramatic and beautiful.

Picking a Company to Cruise with

As part of the “Norway in a Nutshell” route, this specific fjord is particularly busy. The Flåm Fjord Cruise goes from Flåm to Gudvagen, with two options to return: taking a 2-hour cruise back or taking a 20-minute bus ride back. Due to our limited time, we opted for a one-way cruise with a bus back to make a loop. There are two companies that I could find that run this cruise – Visit Flåm and Lustrabaatne. Visit Flåm offers two price points – the lower price point (about 400 NOK) was on a classic shuttle-like boat, whereas the high price point (about 600 NOK) is on their premium, window-covered electric boat that has railings zig-zagging up the sides and a lot of space to be outdoors. Lustrabaatne only has one price point (295 NOK) on a shuttle boat. At this much lower price point, we opted to check it out.

I found it frustrating to navigate the Visit Flåm website. One thing I noticed was that the Visit Flåm website was charging 90 NOK for the return bus, but when I on the VY website (Norway’s public transportation website), they were listing on 70 NOK for the bus. Perhaps Visit Flåm has a special bus for their guests that lined up with the arrival of their vessel…? We opted to wait to purchase on the bus. Also, the price point changes for cruises based on the season. So if would like to go during the summer, you are going to pay for it!

However frustrating the website was to use, I would like to try out their premium cruise. With so many windows and outdoor space for people to be, I feel like I would be able to experience the Fjord with fewer people interrupting the experience.

At a Glance:

  • Rating: 4 (out of 4) stars – would do it again in a heartbeat!
  • Intensity: Cute, warm layers
  • Location: Flåm, Norway
  • Cost: 295 NOK per person with Lustrabaatane
  • Restrooms: At the Flåm visitor center, one on board the vessel
  • Timing: 3 hours with a bus back to Flåm

Highlights:

  • The Fjord is absolutely stunning and particularly narrow as it gets closer to Gudvagen
  • Waterfalls everywhere
  • Calm waters
  • Some guests smoked, making it uncomfortable to be outside
  • Moveable chairs made it difficult to move around

Hanna and her mom smiling for the camera on the very front of the Flam to Gudvagen fjord cruise in Norway and sharing how to Make the most of a Guided Tour

The Cruise Itself

We were driving from Oslo the day we were to do the cruise and arrived at the dock just in time. We boarded what felt like a packed ship and made our way out to the top deck. There were moveable chairs that people had already self-arranged. We were able to snag to chairs and only waited about 10 minutes before take-off. The boat was full of what felt like a few large tour groups. They somehow all suddenly had a cup-of-noodles, which the crew sells before take-off.

We took off and the fjord views are immediately stunning. It is one thing to drive along the fjords, but it is another thing to be slicing through the dark waters with a view of the steep mountains and trickling waterfalls in every direction. Back at our seats, a group photo adding more and more people slowly edged us out of the way and out of a view. I decided to see if it was possible to go to the front of the ship. I grabbed my mom to come down to the chillier but relatively uncrowded bow of the ship. The front was spectacular. The moving clouds provided exactly enough drama to light up certain sides of the fjord.

During the cruise, you make your way up the Aurlandsfjord toward the Sognefjord, then turn and come down the Nærøyfjord. Along the way, you’ll see small towns that are only accessible by boat. You’ll see more waterfalls than you can count, and you’ll see snow-covered mountains that reach much lower temperatures to keep everlasting snow. Although it is all spectacular, once you turn the corner into Nærøyfjord toward Gudvagen, it becomes particularly narrow with calm glass-like water, making each picture dream-worthy. The green vegetation, blue skies, and white waterfalls reflect in the water like a mirror. My only wish is that I had warmer layers on, so I could stay at the front of the boat for the entire cruise.

My mother smiling with lush green sides of the fjord passing by behind her.

Best Photos

I took my favorite photos of the Flåm Fjord Cruise at the front of the boat, where you could a gorgeous photo of the upcoming landscape or catch specific beauties in every direction. When we turned down the Nærøyfjord initially, we were facing the sun. I thought this would blow out the shot, but these were actually lovely, despite myself being a bit windblown.

You should take an opportunity to take photos all around the boat if you can manage it. By that, I mean up front on the bow, at the back with the Norwegian Flag flying, off the sides with waterfalls, and etc. As the scenery passes, the lighting and clouds change, making each area of the fjords a little different.

Once you disembark in Gudvangen, I recommend grabbing a cider from the bar and taking a few pictures with the Viking ship replica and the fjord behind you. Holding onto your cider during the pictures isn’t necessary, but I kind of love the Viking effect.

Boat Logistics

I hinted towards it earlier but wanted to mention that the boat felt very packed on the upper deck. It is not that the boat was full because inside there were many open seats, but that there is limited outdoor space. There were at least two or three large tour groups on board. We may be been there only single ticket holders, which was a bit strange. Some of the men from the tour groups decided to smoke a cigarette on the upper deck, making it uncomfortable for us to stay there. Then the front of the boat was very cold, so we would need to warm back up inside or on the upper deck. So around and around we went. But hey, we got great photos and exercise! I tried not to let this bother me because the fjords were a highlight of our entire Norway trip.

In Gudvangen, where everyone disembarked, there was a gift shop just inside. Once I was in the store, the same people from the boat were talking around me and bumping into me. After spending two hours doing the same thing, I’ve had enough and walked over to get a cider from the empty bar. It’s not that they were unkind, I just needed some space to actually enjoy this beautiful country. Perhaps it wouldn’t feel this way if I signed up for the tour group and this was part of the tour. If a crowd doesn’t bother you, then this is a great fjord cruise.

What to Pack for a Norway Fjord Cruise

The weather in Norway is variable, especially so in autumn. I ended up bringing many light layers so I could adjust to the various weather conditions and wind while on the fjord cruise. Here are a few items that came in handy:

  • Rain Jacket and/or windbreaker , especially for the fjord cruises where it’s extremely windy at the front of the boat.
  • Puffy mid-layer that packs up small like the Patagonia nano-puff jacket . Or for something a little more casual looking, I’m trying out the Patagonia pack-in jacket . the maroon jacket you see in the photos is a casual jacket I picked up from Marshalls but I was freezing, so I wouldn’t recommend it! It might have worked with a rain jacket or windbreaker on top.
  • Wool layering long sleeve, like this one from Smartwool . Or consider a tank top to wear UNDER your cute sweaters for extra warmth.
  • Leggings – athletic ones are always great to have, but also consider bringing a base layer with wool to wear under your pants.
  • Lightweight fleece gloves were handy (pun intended)! I ended up wearing them on the fjord cruises and in Bergen where it was cooler. These ones from REI are supposed to allow you to touch the screen through the gloves – that would have been amazing because I kept having to take one glove off to take photos.
  • Cute fleece-lined beanie.
  • Extra large scarf or scarves! H&M typically has some cute chunky scarves each fall.
  • Boots that you can comfortably walk in, but also keep your feet warm. The ones you see in the photos look good, but are often not warm enough! Consider some cute but functional boots from Clarks or Sorel .
  • A handy dandy refillable water bottle is ALWAYS a good thing to bring with you.

Hanna looking over her shoulder and laughing while on the very front of the Lustrabataane Flam Cruise.

Full Transparency

My mother and I received complimentary tickets for this fjord cruise and I wanted to discuss how that could have impacted my experience. I knew that we would absolutely take a fjord cruise while we were in Norway, regardless if the opportunity happened. Receiving the tickets for this cruise was an absolute bonus. The cruise happens at designated times, so if you were to buy tickets for the Lustrabaatane Flåm fjord cruise , you would get a similar (if not the same) experience. I think you should expect it to be crowded due to its popularity on the “Norway in a Nutshell” route. Perhaps going in winter would make for a quieter experience.

I absolutely love that there is an alternative option to overpriced Visit Flam, which as I mentioned was difficult to navigate their website. At a lower price point, Lustrabaatane allows more people from all over the world to see the fjords in their full glory.

I don’t normally feel seasick and I specifically did not feel anything while onboard the Lustrabaatne cruise. The fjords were extremely calm with little movement for the boat to cut through. The boats are also moving at a very slow pace, making any movement very subtle.

Overall Thoughts: Flåm Fjord Cruise

This fjord cruise was a highlight of my trip to Norway. It was spectacular to see the fjords not just from the car, but from the middle of them. It is hard to know which way to look with views 360 degrees around you and constantly changing as you move through the water. If there is one thing worth doing, it is to take a fjord cruise and see this unique environment. I tried not to let the fact that the boat was full bother me as I think most fjord cruises along the “Norway in a Nutshell” route will be packed, but the crowds definitely got to me by the time we reached the Gudvangen gift shop.

Other things to do in the Flam Area:

  • Taking a ride on the Flam Train
  • Mountain Biking the Flam Valley Downhill
  • Visit the Stegastein Viewpoint
  • Go to a Historic Stave Church
  • Day trip to Fjaerland
  • Cider Tasting in Balestrand

Where have you taken a scenic cruise? This was such a fun and different way to experience the fjords that I cannot wait to take more scenic cruises in the future. Let me know in the comments below where you recommend cruising!

Happy Travels,

One of the most scenic fjords in the world, the Naeroyfjord is best seen from the water. With glass-like water and steep mountain walls, every picture is a dream. Definitely worth seeing on the Flam-Gudvagen fjord cruise. Text on the image reads, "Fjord Cruise in Norway, Flam to Gudvagen" Moderately Adventurous Travel

7 things to do in narvik, norway’s emerging arctic destination.

The Norwegian city of Narvik in the winter weather.

The 2023 worldwide release of the movie Narvik on streaming service Netflix brought this small industrial city in Northern Norway to the world’s attention.

The port city is surrounded by mountains and fjords, providing a spectacular natural playground for visitors to explore.

Few other than keen war historians knew much about Narvik prior to the movie, which depicts the dramatic set of land and sea battles that took place in and around Narvik in the early years of World War II.

Interest in the city as a tourist destination has grown since the movie’s release. In addition, Narvik is now an increasingly important port of call for several European cruise lines running northern lights and midnight sun itineraries.

In summer, the midnight sun bathes Narvik in a never-ending glow, ideal for exploring the hiking trails and fjords at whatever time of day. In winter, Narvik becomes a basecamp for exceptional winter sports and outdoor activities, from downhill skiing and coastal walks to hunting the northern lights.

In One Massive Attack, Ukrainian Missiles Hit Four Russian Ships—Including Three Landing Vessels

New gmail security rules you have 5 days to comply google says, donald trump s social media stake hits 5 6 billion, ride the arctic train.

Modern Narvik exists essentially because of the Ofoten Railway, which was built to link the iron ore mines of Northern Sweden with the ice-free port in Northern Norway.

The Arctic Train is a tourist service on the railway from Narvik towards Sweden.

As such, there’s few better ways to dive into the culture, history, and stunning natural beauty of the area than by taking a ride on the railway.

Although still primarily used as an iron ore line, there is a daily passenger departure to Sweden’s capital city Stockholm, and a tourist service known as The Arctic Train . This service runs through the mountainous terrain up to the border with Sweden before returning to Narvik.

As with Norway’s Flåm Railway, the Arctic Train is a tourist service that includes several photo stops along the way. Typically, it runs on selected days during high season, and when cruise ships are in port at other times of the year.

Book directly through your cruise line, or pay approximately $55 to reserve a place in advance with The Arctic Train directly. Bear in mind that cruise line excursions will include transport to and from the railway station, which is approximately 30-minutes walk from the cruise port.

Discover Narvik’s History

Regardless of whether you’ve watched the movie or not, a visit to Narvik War Museum is a must.

The excellent museum reveals the captivating narrative of the early days of the war through the eyes of the people of Narvik. It also takes a step back to ask deeper questions about the value of a human life and whether a war is ever won.

Narvik War Museum is a must-visit in Narvik, Norway.

For keen war historians, a visit to the war cemetery on the northern side of the city is worth the walk. Here, you’ll find monuments to the various nationalities involved in the Battle of Narvik.

A striking brick building standing on the hillside overlooking the cruise port now plays host to Narvik Museum . This small but interesting museum tells the story of the railway’s construction and the subsequent development of the city in more detail. Kids will love exploring the historic locomotive housed within.

Enjoy Downhill Skiing

Thanks to its stunning views and challenging off-piste opportunities, Narvikfjellet is one of the most famous ski resorts in Northern Norway.

The mountain that towers above the city offers panoramic views of the peaks beyond, the city below, and the fjords snaking out to the open ocean. Check the Narvikfjellet resort website for details on the season, opening times, ski pass prices, and equipment rental information.

Get A Spectacular View

Not a skier? You needn't miss out on the spectacular views from Narvikfjellet, winter or summer.

The cable car ride to the summit at 2,152 feet above sea level is well worth it for the views alone, although you might want to wait to judge the weather on the day before committing to a ticket.

Summer view from Narvikfjellet mountain in Northern Norway.

Beyond the views, cable car visitors can also enjoy a light lunch and refreshing drink at the mountain restaurant. Choose to descend back to the city by cable car, or take a hike along the picturesque mountain road where you’ll meet the grazing goats.

Enjoy An Arctic Coastal Walk On Snowshoes

Norwegians love nothing more than being outdoors, even in the winter. Find out why by joining a guided Arctic walk using snowshoes. Day Out Narvik offers a three-hour small group tour on snowshoes for approximately $110 including a Norwegian winter picnic by a bonfire.

Although no hiking experience is needed, you’ll need to be physically active and willing to be out in the cold for a few hours, so dress well.

Chase The Northern Lights... In Sweden!

Finally, the northern lights is a big tourist attraction in and around the Narvik area. If you’re visiting between late September and early April, it’s possible to see the aurora from Narvik, if the skies are clear.

However, for the best chances, join a guided tour across the border into Sweden. In as little as one hour, you’ll be at Abisko National Park, known as one of the best places to see the northern lights in Sweden , thanks to its frequent clear skies and lack of artificial light pollution.

Visit The World’s Northernmost Animal Park

An hour or so north of Narvik, Polar Park is a must for animal lovers or those interested in Arctic nature. In addition to the rare opportunity to enter the wolf enclosure and meet these remarkable creatures, the park hosts deer, lynx, reindeer, wolverine, Arctic fox, and the brown bear. Bus transport is available from Narvik.

Why Royal Caribbean isn't going all in on massive cruise ships despite the wild success of its new Icon of the Seas

  • Royal Caribbean International has unveiled a swath of giant cruise ships over the past few years.
  • Its CEO said its new world's largest ship, the  Icon of the Seas,  is its "best-selling product" ever.
  • But the cruise line doesn't plan on going all in on megaships forever.

Insider Today

Earlier this year, guests at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island were the first to revel at the historic sight of the world's largest cruise ships, Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas, docked side-by-side.

The vessels towered over their communal dock like skyscrapers, casting a dark shadow over their relatively tiny shared pier.

Together, they can accommodate about 19,250 people.

At 1,196 feet long and weighing 248,663 gross tons, the Icon of the Seas is a sight to behold. When it launched in late January, the giant vessel upstaged its eight-foot shorter predecessor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's biggest.

At the time, it was no surprise: Every new Royal Caribbean ship seemed to dethrone another Royal Caribbean ship for this title.

But not for long.

The company's smaller ships, important for diverse trips, are aging.

The company is synonymous with its mega vessels. And they've been mega-hits: Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, has repeatedly called the Icon of the Seas the "best-selling product" in the company's history.

Related stories

Royal Caribbean is set to launch four more megaships by 2028 — representing about a third of its total fleet. So far, most of the megaships' scheduled sailings are in the Caribbean.

The other 21 smaller vessels tend to have more specialized itineraries, Patrick Scholes, the managing director of lodging and leisure-equity research at Truist Securities, told Business Insider.

Given their trimmer sizes, these vessels can operate more sailings outside the Caribbean , which often reel in high fares and customer satisfaction for the company, Jay Schneider, the chief product-innovation officer at Royal Caribbean Group, told reporters in January. Think of the Mediterranean, Alaska, and South Pacific itineraries — the latter are especially important as the cruise line continues to ramp up business in Asia.

But these destination-flexible cruise liners are aging as Royal Caribbean continues to unveil their giant counterparts. The company launched its four oldest Vision-class ships, with a maximum 2,730-guest capacity, between 1996 and 1998.

They're tiny and old compared to the 2-month-old, 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas .

Looking ahead, Royal Caribbean plans to return to the basics: smaller cruise ships.

Despite the cruise line's success with mega-vessels, Schneider said Royal Caribbean is now considering a new class of ships that would start "smaller" — noting that he was "careful to say small, but less-than-large."

"The reality is, families want to go on vacations not just in the Western and Eastern Caribbean where a ship like Icon can get into," Schneider said. "They want to stay with our brand and journey to different destinations that require more versatility in ship size."

Desirable destinations such as French Polynesia and Venice, Italy, have limited visiting cruises , including size restrictions, to curb pollution and overcrowding. But, as Schneider said, small-vessel-enabled specialized itineraries are also important to travelers.

Giant mass-market floating resorts also often attract first-time cruisers, enamored by their family-friendly water parks and Broadway-style shows. But after a few good vacations at sea, these no-longer-new-to-cruising guests might start craving quieter ships or more bespoke itineraries.

"Alaska cruises tend not to be the first-time cruiser," Scholes told BI. "I don't really see Icon of the Seas doing a Norwegian Fjord or Alaska trip."

Plus, "there's probably only so much demand for these giant ships," Scholes said.

Royal Caribbean has already succeeded in the first part: bringing in a swath of new cruisers with its megaships. Now, it has to retain them.

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.

catamaran boat double decker

A good average speed to cross the Atlantic or to reach new anchorages in the Caribbean islands after a beautiful summer season in the Mediterranean also guided their choice.  It simply remained to find a shipyard capable of satisfying the wishes of the owner.  With a budget of more than 4 million euros, this owner was looking for a boat that was not just ultra-equipped and of the highest quality, but a unit that was entirely made ...

DISCOVER THE MODEL

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

catamaran boat double decker

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. Don’t miss out on your own little piece of paradise.

A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

A seafaring adventure on Island Routes double-decker catamaran cruise

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise They suggested the Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise. They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

MORE COMFORT

The Dek Kat 2680 is a semi-custom built boat which is just as comfortable on the bay waters chasing trout and redfish as it is at the sand bar with your family. Savor Bonaire's breathtaking seascapes from the Sea Breeze double-decker power catamaran .

You'll stop at the famous pink salt flats and white mountains of salt. Your guide will explain the salt production process.

Offshore from the historical white slave huts, learn some Caribbean facts and discover why these centuries-old huts are built next to the sea.

The catamaran approaches the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire by way of the famous Bonaire Marine Park . Its protected reef makes it a divers' paradise. From up close, you will see Bonaire's most attractive white-sand beach. Its name, of course, is No-Name Beach.

Follow the coastline for exceptional panoramic views, and don't forget to look down into the crystal-clear turquoise water. Oceanfront hotels and restaurants and beautiful Dutch Caribbean mansions line the way back to the port.

Maximum age is 70 years. Maximum height is 6'6". Maximum weight is 330 lbs. Guests who are more than five months pregnant or have a heart condition, asthma, or leg or chest injuries and/or recent surgery are not allowed to participate. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations.

Some of the best decking materials include:

  • Wood: Cedar, redwood, and tropical hardwoods offer a classic look but require regular maintenance.
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber: Affordable pine that resists rot and insects but may need staining.
  • Composite Decking: Low-maintenance blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, available in various colors.
  • PVC Decking: Synthetic option resistant to stains, scratches, and fading, but can be pricey.
  • Aluminum Decking: Lightweight, durable, rust-resistant, suitable for water areas, but more expensive.
  • Vinyl Decking: Low-maintenance, moisture, and rot-resistant, but quality varies.

It’s better to build a patio when:

  • Privacy is a priority: Patio provides a sense of privacy, especially when enclosed.
  • Budget and low maintenance are the priority: Patios are generally more cost-effective to build and require less maintenance.
  • The ground is flat: For even ground, constructing a patio is easier and more straightforward.

It’s better to build a deck when:

  • Scenic views are desired: Decks offer better views.
  • You are fine with obtaining building permits and inspections: Decks typically require permits and inspections due to their structural impact on the home.
  • The ground is uneven: If your backyard has slopes or uneven terrain, a deck can provide a stable and level outdoor space.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.
