About the Music
Saint-saëns piano concerto no. 2, berlioz symphonie fantastique.
“The hottest artist on the classical music planet” ( The New York Times ), superstar Lang Lang sells out concerts across the globe . H e returns to Cleveland to perform Saint-Saëns’s most popular piano concerto. In his Symphonie fantastique , the young Berlioz bared his soul in music , torturing himself with passion — some might say obsession — for his beloved. Through tender love scenes, a thrilling march to the scaffold, and a n opium-induced nightmare, Berlioz’s riveting masterpiece is unforgettable .

Lang Lang piano
Bach Goldberg Variations
Lang Lang is one of the world’s great figures in modern classical music, an artist who has had a profound effect as a pianist, educator and philanthropist, as well as an influential ambassador for the arts. He’s given concerts the world over, played for billions of viewers at the 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremony in Beijing and is a recent star of Channel 4’s ‘The Piano’, through all of which his charisma and artistry shine through.
This is an incredible opportunity to hear this magical performer live on stage in one of just a handful of UK dates this autumn. Bach’s magnificent Goldberg Variations were reputedly composed to soothe the insomniac Count Keyserlingk in his sleepless nights, and Bach crafts 30 variations on a beautiful aria to create a timeless masterpiece.
“I’ve moved into new terrain with the Goldberg Variations and really immersed myself fully in this project,” says Lang Lang. This has included consulting period performance experts for the latest thinking in Baroque music. “I’ve been studying this piece for more than 20 years, and recording it has been a lifelong dream”.

‘That was Lang Lang!’: ‘greatest living pianist’ gigs on St Pancras concourse
Playing an upright and competing with PA announcements, the Chinese musician wowed an unsuspecting crowd
T he superstar pianist Lang Lang has played in the great concert halls of the world, at Buckingham Palace and an Olympic opening ceremony, but has never before had to compete with a recorded announcement from station security warning that bag thieves were operating in the area.
So it was on Friday, however, when the man routinely described as the greatest pianist alive found himself between some escalators, a bureau de change and a branch of Reiss, performing on an upright piano to a small crowd of startled travellers at St Pancras station in London.
Sophia Effinger, a 23-year-old law student from Germany, had just stepped off the Eurostar when she walked straight into the throng. “That was Lang Lang,” she said, gesturing over her shoulder in some bewilderment as the musician was ushered away after his performance.
“I didn’t expect that to be the first thing I saw on my trip to London.”
After a burst of Rimsky-Korsakov’s showstopper The Flight of the Bumblebee – his hands a blur across the keys as dozens craned around the piano holding up their phones – the 40-year-old Chinese musician told the crowd he had been nervous about his first ever station performance.
The evening before he flew to London, he said, he had considered practising the piece on an instrument at Newark airport. “But I said, I really can’t do that because I need to do the premiere here.”
He followed with part of Franz Liszt’s Liebesträume, his eyes closed in concentration amid the station bustle, before being joined by his wife, the German-Korean pianist Gina Alice Redlinger, for a duet of Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No 5.
Lang Lang has become familiar with the British love of railway station pianos through his role as a judge on the Channel 4 programme The Piano, which has proved an unexpected hit with critics and viewers and was described by the Guardian as “the most uplifting TV talent show ever” .
Official viewing figures provided from the agency Digital-i show the programme, from the same production stable as The Great British Bake Off and sharing much of its feelgood sentiment, was consistently the broadcaster’s top-rated show on the evening of transmission, attracting around 1.7 million viewers, with many more sharing viral clips.
The finale of the programme, to be broadcast on Wednesday, will feature amateur pianists including a rapper from the Isle of Wight, a young man who turned to the piano after the suicide of his father, and a visually impaired 13-year-old who learned to play with her hands resting on her teacher’s.
Selected by Lang Lang and fellow judge, the pop singer Mika, on the strength of their performances on station pianos across the country, they were invited to join the two professional musicians at a concert at the Royal Festival Hall.
Performing with the great symphony orchestras of the world was one thing, Lang Lang told the Guardian after his performance, but playing in the station had been “special”. “I didn’t expect the train announcements, and also when the train stops, you can hear the sound, ssssss,” he said.
Having met with some sniffiness over his own attempts to popularise piano music, which include performing with Metallica, Pharrell Williams and Gangnam Style singer Psy, he said his aim was to “see how far [piano music] can reach”.
after newsletter promotion
“I think this brings music very close to the people. In a concert hall it is great, but sometimes you don’t get a new audience.”
People were sometimes afraid of classical music, he said, which was why as well as Rachmaninoff and Chopin, the programme had embraced performers playing Elton John, Harry Styles and their own compositions.
“So in a way this is really opening the boundaries. To show that piano is not just one dimension – it is a little universe.”
For some of those present, the power of his impromptu performance was clear. Christine Champion, waiting for a train to St Albans ahead of a weekend with a friend, had taken a seat as the crowd dispersed.
As she spoke, her glasses steamed up with emotion. “I have often over the years, seen ordinary people playing the pianos in stations, and it can be pretty impressive in the way it touches a chord.”
What had struck her about Lang Lang, she said, was “his total immersion in his expression, how he leaned into the music. I found it quite emotionally engaging. It was a wonderful shared diversion.”

Event Description
Lang Lang joins Esa-Pekka Salonen and the SF Symphony for Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto, a work that seizes attention through its dramatic opening, pianistic flourishes, and echoes of Norwegian folk tunes. Then Jean Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony pleases with rich textures, lush melodies, and a finale that recalls the buzzing, chirping, and gurgling sounds of the Finnish landscape.
AT A GLANCE
Edvard Grieg wrote his Piano Concerto when he was 25, and it launched his international career. As a student at the Leipzig Conservatory a few years earlier, he had heard Clara Schumann perform her late husband Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto, which made a deep impression on him and inspired his own concerto. Grieg’s concerto, in turn, inspired Franz Liszt and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and it remains a chestnut of the repertoire—with its dramatic opening, pianistic flourishes, and echoes of Norwegian folk tunes.
Jean Sibelius must have still been feeling the glow of his recent successful visit to America when on his return home, he heard the news of the assassination at Sarajevo of the heir to the Austrian throne. He had scarcely settled into his life again when, to his horror and disbelief, virtually all Europe was at war. Sibelius had jotted these words in his notebook: “In a deep valley again. But I already begin to see dimly the mountain that I shall certainly ascend. . . . God opens His door for a moment and His orchestra plays the Fifth Symphony .”

Lang Lang on Alicia Keys, Herbie Hancock, Disney and `Tom and Jerry’ cartoons
San Diego Symphony, led by Dutch conductor Otto Tausk, will welcome the piano superstar and his wife, Gina Alice, highlighting the works of French composer Saint-Saëns

Lang Lang is a rarity. He is a classical-music superstar who counts Alicia Keys, Andra Day and Herbie Hancock among his collaborators. The famous Chinese pianist’s albums often stay on the charts for months, and he’s an in-demand performer all over the globe.
Lang Lang’s 2019 marriage to Gina Alice Redlinger took place at the Palace of Versailles, complete with an 8-foot-tall wedding cake and fireworks. Guests included John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, British royals Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, the Chinese ambassador to France and philanthropist Elizabeth Segerstrom.
Despite a busy tour in Europe, the San Diego-bound Lang Lang recently took time for a wide-ranging Zoom conversation. The pianist had performed that night with mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli in Monaco and spoke minutes after receiving a post-concert massage.
Among the topics discussed were “Saint-Saëns,” Lang Lang’s just-released double-album honoring the beloved composer, the pianist’s high-profile collaborators and the musical impact that “Tom and Jerry” cartoons had on him as a child. Lang Lang is committed to introducing classical music to children all over the world.
He will perform Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 with the San Diego Symphony on Friday at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. Also on the program is the French composer’s “Carnival of the Animals.” Joining him for that playful work will be his wife, fellow pianist Redlinger, whose stage name is Gina Alice.
“We share the same piano so it’s very easy to rehearse,” Lang Lang said with a smile. “There’s an intimate connection between us, musically and personally. I think when you’re playing chamber music together, you have to be very close friends to make the music work naturally.”
The orchestra will be led by Dutch conductor Otto Tausk, currently music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The concert will begin with a piece titled 365 by composer Joey Roukens, also from Holland, and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite.
“The Saint-Saëns’ concerto is so virtuosic!” Lang Lang said. “It’s like a combination of Liszt and Schumann, with spectacular technique and beautiful emotions. It requires light control of the keyboard and has organ-style dimensions.
“It’s not played as often as piano concertos by Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky. A lot of people don’t know about it, but it’s really the best romantic concerto.”
A Grammy Award nominee, Lang Lang, 41, has been featured on the awards show telecast four times, including a 2020 mega-performance with a slew of stars. His other Grammy collaborators included Pharrell Williams, Metallica and jazz keyboard great Hancock.
Since that 2008 collaboration with Hancock, which was Lang Lang’s first Grammy performance, the two re-teamed several times and forged a strong friendship.
“Herbie taught me how to improvise,” he said. “I’ve improved over the years. But, of course, I cannot do what Herbie can. Compared to myself, I’ve improved a lot. But what Herbie can do is out of this world!”
In December 2023, Lang Lang improvised with keyboardist/singer Alicia Keys. In a commercial for HennessyParadis cognac, they played on two pianos set on a high-desert plateau in Utah. Filming the video was quite an experience.
“Like I do for Herbie, I have a lot of respect for Alicia,” he said. “She asked me to play her composition and add input on top of those notes. It was really magical. And the scenery was beautiful.”
In 2022, Lang Lang released an album of Disney classics called “The Disney Book.” A year later, he did a concert film recapping the record’s songs.
Lang Lang had a challenging childhood in Shanghai and Beijing. One bright spot for the piano prodigy was cartoons, which often used classical music in their scores. He especially remembers the “Tom and Jerry” cartoon that featured Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.
“Today’s cartoons are less classical than when I was a kid, and that’s why it’s important for me to work with Disney,” said Lang Lang, who has a 3-year-old son with Redlinger. “We need to keep the classical tradition in Disney animation and to develop classical-music listeners from the new generation, which is also one of my goals.”
He founded the Lang Lang International Music Foundation in 2008 to help reach that goal. Among other projects, the foundation has established piano labs in schools in China and the U.S., including at San Diego’s High Tech Elementary Explorer school at Liberty Station.
Its “Keys of Inspiration” program provides 20 to 30 state-of-the-art pianos, music curriculum and supplemental training for teachers. Lang Lang visits and performs at these schools whenever he can.
“They always ask for songs from Disney,” he said with a chuckle. “The biggest hit in schools right now is ‘We Don’t Talk about Bruno’ from ‘Encanto.’
“It’s so important to put music back in the curriculum. Unfortunately, schools cut music and art. The kids who learn music in school are better in everything else,” he said.
It’s Lang Lang’s first appearance at the Rady Shell, but he has a long history with the symphony. His debut with the symphony was in 2008, and he has performed with the orchestra at least 10 times since. Lang Lang counts many of the symphony musicians as friends.
“I especially like to go to two places in San Diego,” he said. “I really like La Jolla and its beautiful coastlines. And Coronado is also beautiful. I’ve had some nice dinners there. It’s really relaxing.
“I like to get out to nature in San Diego. It’s just so nice to be there.”

The keys to global success
Passionate pianist maintains a busy schedule as he thrills audiences on world tour in support of new album, chen nan reports..
For those who attend one of Lang Lang's concerts, the pianist suggests that they fasten their seat belts. "I often get overexcited during my concerts and I want my audience to feel the same," says the 42-year-old pianist. "It's different from listening to my recordings that can't show a full picture about me. While onstage, people have an idea of who I am as a pianist, much more thoroughly and directly."
The pianist shared the viewpoint on the day before a concert in Monaco, on March 24. He embarked on a tour in February, which kicked off in Rome, and will take him to concert halls, opera houses and music festivals around the world.
"Usually, I get my tour schedules two years in advance. I am getting used to that pace," he says in an interview with China Daily. "In my 20s, I wanted to be the busiest pianist, with lots of shows and events scheduled, but now, I want to perform at the best venues and with the top symphony orchestras and musicians in the world."
Most of the places that he is going to perform at are not new to him. "I have played at those venues — such as Carnegie Hall, New York and Musikverein Vienna — at least 50 times. I am lucky that my concerts sell out fast and the audiences show me a warm welcome," says Lang, adding that he will perform in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, for the first time this year.
The repertories he has chosen to play during the tour cover a wide range of composers, including Schumann's Kreisleriana, Op 16 , an eight-movement composition for solo piano, which as Lang says is "very dramatic". He also plays Chopin's eight mazurkas, which bring Polish folk dance to life. In his recitals, Lang will perform Gabriel Faure's Pavane, Op 50 , and Chopin's Polonaise in F-sharp Minor, Op 44 .
Besides working with top troupes, such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Philharmonie de Paris, he will perform during Carnegie Hall's opening night 2024-25 season gala with conductor Gustavo Dudamel, and perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No 2 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
As one of the four curators of the Carnegie Hall's Perspectives series, he will give seven concerts in the season, "marking a new chapter in his long and illustrious history at Carnegie Hall", as the venue's website notes.
"It is an interesting project, an artistic initiative, in which I will participate for two seasons at Carnegie Hall, sharing my own musical individuality and creating a personal concert series," Lang says.

Schumann: Arabesque in C Major, op. 18 J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations , BWV 988
“The hottest artist on the classical music planet.” The New York Times
“In his monumental first movement cadenza, Lang Lang went from elegant delicacy to a ferocious, life-affirming intensity.” – Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times
Celebrate world-renowned pianist Lang Lang’s first Santa Barbara appearance in eight years. Fueled by a lifelong passion for one of the most challenging compositions in the repertoire, Lang Lang’s interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations represents a significant milestone in his stellar career. Deeply felt and two decades in the making, Lang Lang’s hyper-expressive performance of this monumental work will provoke powerful reactions and plenty of animated discussion among fans and critics. Reflecting on the process of developing his interpretation, Lang Lang said,“It takes you to another level of thinking.”

Lang Lang (born June 14, 1982) is a charismatic and world renowned Chinese classical pianist and musician, hailing from Shenyang in North Eastern China.
Lang first began playing piano age three and it only took him two years before he won his first local competition in Shenyang. In the creative footsteps of his father, a well-known ehru player in China, Lang moved to Beijing when he was nine to continue his studies at the Central Music Conservatory. Initially having trouble with his lessons, Lang’s love for the piano was revitalised when a music teacher asked him to play along to Mozart’s Piano Sonata No.10 in C major, as has since developed a proclivity for classical Western music.
Lang later studied under Professor Zhao Ping-Guo, won the 1993 Xing Hai Cup Piano Competition and first prize at the fourth International Competition for Young Pianist in Ettlingen, Germany. Still in his early teens the Chinese pianist garnered a lot of attention, earned a number of acclaimed awards including first place at the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians, and played with some of the most well-respected orchestras in the world. At 15 Lang moved to Philadelphia, U.S., and began his studentship under Gary Graffman at the Curtis Institute of Music.
Known for his charismatic appeal that has more in common with rock stars and concert pianists, Lang made his U.S. debut at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago in 1999, followed by a show at Carnegie Hall, New York, in 2001. Following a tour with the Philadelphia Orchestra and a show at the Proms, in Royal Albert Hall, London, the pianist made his recoding debut in 2003. The CD featured Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn’s first piano concertos with Berenbolm and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and earned Lang considerable acclaim. He later performed at Beijing’s opening ceremony for the 2008 Summer Olympics to over a billion people.
The pianist has since provided the score to a number of soundtracks including “The Painted Veil” and “The Banquet”, has played to a number of respected figures including Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth II, and has performed on high profile TV shows and at events including “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony.

Lang Lang is quite possibly one of the world’s most renowned concert pianists. He is originally from Shenyang, Liaoning, China. He started the piano at the young age of three and at age five he won first place at the Shenyang Piano Competition where he performed in public for the first time. It is no wonder that he later in his career; he got offered a recording contract for his efforts. He has been hailed by critics as “the biggest most exciting young keyboard talent I have encountered in many a year of attending piano recitals”.
Seeing him live is one of the most amazing experiences as he plays with such feeling and soul, drawing the audience in to his place at the piano, inviting them in as he plays through some of the most incredible pieces, from the likes of Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven. When he plays, it is literally an extension of his personality that fills the room, captivating and enchanting.

The keys to global success
Passionate pianist maintains a busy schedule as he thrills audiences on world tour in support of new album, chen nan reports..
By Chen Nan | China Daily | Updated: 2024-04-15 05:50

Lang Lang Performs Disney Classics
World-famous pianist Lang Lang presented a one-night-only event, “Disney Classic Live in Concert Presents Lang Lang,” on January 27. The concert was inspired by the theme song “Love the Memory” from the nighttime spectacular Momentous. Lang Lang was joined by a string quartet, along with guest conductor Chiu Tsang Hei. They performed a blend of Disney melodies accompanied by projections, visual effects, and storytelling in a 45-minute musical journey.

All in all, the concert featured 14 Disney classics, including “it’s a small world,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” and “Let It Go.” Lang Lang was joined on stage by Mickey Mouse, along with Miguel from Coco, and Elsa from Frozen.
Lang Lang Interacted With Young Talent
Speaking on the concert, Lang Lang shared, “Having a live concert in front of a Disney castle has always been a dream of mine. I’m thrilled that my dream [came] true last night at Hong Kong Disneyland! Disney’s stories and music have played a significant role in my childhood and inspired my musical journey greatly. Through Disney’s unique storytelling, I hope this show will offer the audience an innovative perspective to appreciate classical music.”
After the concert, Lang Lang interacted with ten selected individuals from local schools and community organizations. Among them was a musician with visual disabilities from the Arts With the Disabled Association Hong Kong, as well as a wish child from Make-A-Wish Hong Kong. Each aspires to be a pianist, so they were excited for the opportunity to meet with Lang Lang. He shared his experiences his experiences as well as insights on performing on an international stage.
