Aurora, N.Y. — Upstate New Yorkers have long known that the tiny village of Aurora is a quiet, lakeside gem.
Now, the rest of the nation is finally starting to take notice.
Aurora, a community in Cayuga County that’s home to fewer than 800 people, has been named America’s best small spa and wellness town by Travel + Leisure. The ridiculously scenic village on Cayuga Lake earned the distinction thanks to the Inns of Aurora Resort & Spa — a widely lauded group that includes five stately inns, a farm-to-table restaurant and a hilltop spa that the magazine’s readers recently voted as New York’s best resort .
But The Spa at the Inns of Aurora and its sister guest houses aren’t the only attractions that make Aurora the perfect place to spend a long weekend.
“Throw in the fact that this stretch of the Finger Lakes is filled with gorge hikes, tap rooms, farm stands, and low-key beaches, and Aurora starts to look like not only the best small town for wellness, but for just about anybody’s idea of what the chilled-out good life should be,” Travel + Leisure wrote.

Perched on the east side of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes, Aurora is a college town — home to Wells College, a small private institution that was a woman’s college for 136 years before going co-ed in 2005. It’s about 25 minutes south of Auburn and 40 minutes north of Ithaca.
Along with Wells, Aurora is home to MacKenzie-Childs — the manufacturer whose hand-painted, checkered ceramics and furniture are made by artists at a bucolic campus just outside of the village.

The village on the eastern edge of Finger Lakes’ famed wine country is a short drive from a number of wineries, including Heart & Hands Wine Company in Union Springs and Treleaven Winery in King Ferry.
But for travelers seeking a restful respite from bustling daily life, The Spa at the Inns of Aurora is the village’s main, sparkling draw.
Housed on a hilltop with views of Cayuga Lake, The Spa opened in 2021. It is home to outdoor pools and an indoor pool, a sauna and a steam room, and many lounge-worth spots. Guests can get massages, pedicures, hydrotherapy a number of treatments on The Spa’s extensive menu of services.
The Spa also has an on-site cafe with a “complimentary grazing table” for guests, who can sip kombucha, wine or espresso while snacking on soup and salad.
This year, the “ambitious” wellness retreat received a gold-level Well Certification — making it the only spa in the U.S. to so far achieve the honor, Travel + Leisure wrote.
The magazine encouraged travelers to stay at one of the Inns of Aurora’s residences, like the historic Aurora Inn hotel on Main Street or the private, pet-and-kid friendly Orchard Cottage. Hungry visitors can grab a meal and drink at Aurora Brewing Company , Travel + Leisure said, or Fargo Bar & Grill .

“This is a significant moment for the Inns of Aurora. Aurora is a special place, largely because of the incredibly talented and dedicated staff that made this achievement possible,” said Chief Operating Officer Sue Edinger. “Our team is constantly innovating—from our Outdoorsmen who develop engaging programming like archery lessons and guided hikes to our innkeepers who establish personal relationships with guests. We look forward to sharing the Inns of Aurora experience with a new audience of travelers and welcoming our many returning visitors.”

Finger Lakes region named one of the top travel destinations for 2022
Travel and Leisure , a travel magazine based in New York City, recently compiled a list of the best travel destinations for 2022 — and the Finger Lakes region made the cut.
The new year was slated to be a year where people returned to traveling the world after two years of dealing with Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions.
During the shutdowns, many properties in the hospitality industry invested in revocation projects that revamped rooms and outdoor spaces while adding new amenities.
Despite COVID variants and testing regulations still in place for travelers, the curated list of hot spots focused on destinations that invested in such upgrades.
The Finger Lakes region was featured on the list due to their bolstered wellness and culinary offerings, making a name for themselves in the luxury travel realm.
Establishments mentioned include the Inns of Aurora , a luxury boutique resort comprised of five historic mansions, shops restaurants, and a new 15,000 square-foot Spa and healing center. The Spa at the Inns of Aurora sits on 350 acres overlooking Cayuga Lake, highlighted by hydrotherapy pools and meditation areas.
The Lakehouse in Canandaigua was also featured for the Willowbrook Spa, offering lakeside barrel sauna sessions.
Other attractions and hot spots given a spotlight include Seneca Lake, home to the largest of the Finger Lakes wine trails, the Rochester Lilac Festival, the International Jazz Festival, and Cayuga County's celebration of Harriett Tubman's birth.

Take A Relaxing Vacation At This Popular Lakeside New York Town
Mention a trip to New York and bustling New York City often comes to mind. However, the state is also home to destinations where travelers can slow things down and relax lakeside instead. When you're pursuing a retreat with an emphasis on taking things at your own pace, Aurora, New York is a must-visit on your travel list.
Aurora sits on the scenic eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, and is part of the greater Finger Lakes region in central New York. It's home to just more than 650 year-round residents, giving it a quiet and calm appeal throughout all four seasons of the year. This charming village in Cayuga County is located roughly 250 miles from busier destinations on the map like New York City and Philadelphia.
Cayuga Lake sets a picture-perfect scene for on-the-water fun in Aurora during warm-weather months. At 39 miles in length and 3 miles wide, this vast expanse of water offers visitors plenty of space to settle in on the shoreline and relax. The lake is popular among locals and visitors alike looking to spend time paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, and sailing.
Aurora is also a destination where connecting with the past is refreshingly simple. Here, bygone eras and modern marvels go hand-in-hand. Take a stroll to Patrick Tavern off Main Street and you'll find yourself face-to-face with one of the oldest buildings in the county, dating back to 1793. Wander a little further and you'll find Queen Anne houses right around the corner from modern eateries and shops.
A place to focus on rejuvenation and customized fun
Historical landmarks in Aurora encourage East Coast travelers to slow down and appreciate contrasting eras through architectural stories. Beyond the history, this is also a place where you can plan a relaxing lakeside trip focused on wellness. At Inns of Aurora Resort & Spa , rejuvenating services are available to guests of the inn as well as day visitors.
The spa provides sweeping views of Cayuga Lake for a session that's scenic and refreshing. Services available range from hydrotherapy and massage, to skincare and Reiki treatments along with other energy work. The spa recently earned the first Gold Level Well Certification in the country, for holistic services.
Customizing your relaxing lakeside journey to Aurora is made even better, and more delicious, when you choose to spend some quality time at nearby places like Hearts & Hands Wine Company . A tasting session here is a chance to relax with a glass of pinot noir or riesling upon request. Afterward, you can head back to Aurora's Main Street and leisurely browse boutique shops that showcase everything from antiques to apparel.
If you happen to be into imaginative and whimsical homewares, you'll love that Aurora hosts the headquarters for MacKenzie-Childs . From hand-painted ceramics to cake stands and tea kettles, shopping for one-of-a-kind decor can be an all-day event at the company's Aurora location. When browsing leaves you artistically inspired, pottery creation culture thrives in Aurora at DIY destinations like MUSEjar, Designing Dish, and Black Raven Pottery.

Visiting Aurora, NY
Destination.
Aurora, is a small village of under 1,000 people, located on the east side of Cayuga Lake in central New York. It is home to Wells College, a college for women that was founded in 1868. It is located north of Ithaca. Its historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I found it a great place to stay after a full day of exploring Cayuga Lake, the wineries, Ithaca and Cornell University.
I highly recommend The Inns of Aurora which was one of the nicest inns that I have ever stayed in. It is located at 391 Main St. It was recently named the #11 Resort in the US in Travel+Leisure Magazine’s 2019 World’s Best Awards!
The Inns consists of five houses, each with its own unique character. They are The Aurora Inn, the E.B. Morgan House, the Rowland House, Wallcourt Hall and the newest Zabriskie Hall. I stayed in Wallcourt Hall, from 1909, that is stunning in its contemporary design.
The Inn also has a number of dining options including their 1833 Kitchen & Bar with great food, a farm-t0-table focus and beautiful views of the lake. They also have the casual Fargo Bar & Grill across the street. They also have the Village Market with coffee, pastries, desserts and beer along with take home meals.
The Inn was created by American Girl Doll Founder and Wells College alumna, Pleasant Rowland. The dining room is headed by James Beard honoree Patrick Higgins who was a guest chef at the James Beard House.
The Taylor House is available for private rentals also.
In 2021, they opened their new The Spa at Inns of Aurora . It is located outside of town at 700 Sherwood Rd. It is a beautiful property with lovely views of Cayuga Lake. Promoting wellness, it offers a number of spa treatments. It also has a cafe for for guests of The Spa.

Delta Is Expanding Nonstop Service to Venice This Summer — What to Know
Delta will relaunch nonstop service between New York's JFK and Venice Marco Polo Airport and add new service from Atlanta.
scaliger/Getty Images
Delta Air Lines has a stacked schedule to make it easier for travelers to get to Italy, with several new routes to Venice ahead of the summer.
By the end of this month, Delta will relaunch nonstop service between its New York-JFK gateway and Venice Marco Polo Airport on a Boeing 767-300, configured with Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Main Cabin seats, the airline announced this week. This seasonal route will be operated daily through the end of October before being reduced to a 5x/weekly schedule.
In addition, Delta will introduce two daily flights between its main hub in Atlanta and Venice this summer, giving U.S. travelers more options than ever to get to the City of Canals. These new routes are all bookable on Delta’s website and mark a total of 17 weekly flights between the U.S. and Venice this summer.
“As one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Venice is hugely popular with U.S. travelers, and our flights bring valuable tourism and trade opportunities to the city and the region as well as unrivaled opportunities for Venetians looking to explore destinations across the Americas,” Delta’s senior vice president for Europe, Middle East, Africa, and India, Matteo Curcio, said in a statement. “We’re glad to offer customers increased choice this summer with flights from New York and additional service from Atlanta.”
The announcement comes as Delta plots its largest transatlantic schedule for Summer 2024 with a particular emphasis on Italy, operating nonstop routes to four cities: Milan, Naples, Rome, and Venice. With its European alliance partners Air France and Virgin Atlantic, Delta will be able to codeshare these new services to connect travelers from hundreds of cities worldwide to Italy.
Travelers flying in premium cabins can look forward to Delta’s newest airport lounge at its New York-JFK hub in Terminal 4 opening in the coming months. The nearly 40,000-square-foot space will boast a year-round outdoor terrace and a chef’s kitchen, among other premium amenities.

Giro Aries Spherical
Our upgrade pick for the best commuter bike helmet.
Ultra-serious road cyclists can’t go wrong with the lightest, best-ventilated helmet we’ve tested. It features a triangle of reflective safety tape on the back, and it’s the top-rated helmet in Virginia Tech’s safety test.
Other things to know: Our most expensive pick by far, but may be worth considering if you’re a committed roadie or extremely concerned about concussions. Considering the price, we wish Giro offered a more-generous crash-replacement policy. On sale for REI members with single-use promo code MEMBER24 .
Read our review of the best bike helmet for commuters .
Our pick for the best large carry-on travel backpack
Most travelers will appreciate this adjustable, customizable pack’s easy accessibility and clever tuck-away straps, as well as the elegant way it expands and contracts. And if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers, it’s a near-perfect system for photographers and gearheads.
Other things to know: Comes with a lifetime warranty. Committing to the entire system of packing and camera cubes adds extra cost to an already expensive bag. On sale for REI members with single-use promo code MEMBER24 . Not the absolute best sale we’ve seen, but a solid value.
Read our review of the best carry-on travel backpacks .
Our more rugged spatial mosquito repellent pick
With rubbery grip areas on the sides, a lanyard and carabiner, and a locking lid, this odorless spatial repellent can keep a bedroom-sized area mosquito-free. It has the same qualities and nine-hour battery life as our top pick, but its compact size is better for camping and other outdoor activities.
Other things to know: Wind can drastically affect performance. Works only against mosquitos. Takes about 15 minutes to protect an area. On sale for REI members with single-use promo code MEMBER24 .
Read our review of the best mosquito-control gear for your patio or yard .
The best hiking boot
Not only do these breathable, waterproof hiking boots offer trustworthy traction, but their design also includes a gusseted tongue and the widest toe box of any hiking boot we tested. With top-notch cushioning, they fit most foot shapes right out of the box and are supportive without feeling compressive.
Other things to know: Fairly bulky and the heaviest of all our picks. The laces are sheathed with a material that makes them harder to tie. On sale for REI members with single-use promo code MEMBER24 . We’ve seen better prices in the past for fewer colors and less size availability.

Our runner-up pick for the best rain pants
Made of three-layer ripstop nylon, these rain pants are just as dry and comfortable in wetter conditions as our top pick, but they’re more breathable than many of the other options we tested. Articulated knees offer added mobility, while the long ankle zippers make it easier to pull them on and off.
Other things to know: If you’re shorter or taller than the inseams accommodate (they come in short and regular lengths), you may be tripping over these pants or finding that they don’t cover you adequately. On sale for REI members with single-use promo code MEMBER24 . A rare deal, but still more expensive than our top pick.

Snow Peak Ti-Single 450 Cup
A larger version of a staff-favorite ultralight titanium mug.
Campfire cooking is a breeze with this durable, smooth titanium mug, and the food-grade silicone HotLips help mitigate potential scorching while sipping. The cup’s roomy flip-out handle is easy to grip while in use, and you can attach it to a carabiner for external storage if you’re packing light.
Other things to know: Cup may be too hot to drink from on its own at first pour. Can also be used as a single-serving pot for boiling water. HotLips only fit on Snow Peaks mugs. Single-use coupon code MEMBER24 is only available for REI members.

The Inns of Aurora is a suite of four historic properties in Aurora, New York, a village in the state's Finger Lakes region (population: 774*). Aurora is picturesque in just the way the term "village" implies. My stay there fell on the cusp of spring: lovely untouched swathes of snow blanketed all the properties' great lawns, but the days were sunny and relatively mild.
