Where is Northeast USA?

Northeast USA is found in the top right-hand corner of the continental United States. There are sometimes different states included in this region, but generally, these states make up the Northeast:  Maine , Maryland, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The northernmost states neighbor the Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick provinces of   Canada . To the east is the Atlantic Ocean, with many of the Northeast states right on the coast. To the west is the Midwest region, and below is   the South .

How do I get to Northeast USA?

It's pretty easy to get to the Northeastern USA as there are several international airports throughout the states. Some of the largest airports include:

  • John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), La Guardia (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New York.
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington, D.C.

Depending on where you'd like to visit, you can also drive in from any other part of the US or even Canada.

Trainlines and buses also operate in and out of this area which can be great options for those not looking to rent a car.

How will I get around Northeast USA?

Getting around the Northeast as a traveler is generally easy as there is a lot of public transport that operates interstate. Buses can get you just about anywhere in the Northeast, however, long-distance and inter-city trains can take you between several of the major hubs, including New York, Philadelphia and Boston.

Other transport options include the use of private cars, which is great for road trips. There's also the option to fly between certain areas depending on the destination.

When is the best time to visit Northeast USA?

The best time to visit Northeast USA is during the summer from May to August when the weather is at its best. The shoulder seasons can also be good times to visit for small crowds.

If you're looking for a trip filled with snow days and cozy fireside meals, winter in the Northeast is a magical time.

What to pack for a trip to Northeast USA

What to pack on a trip to the Northeast USA depends on your trip type and time of travel. Generally, the climate in the Northeast can vary and change quickly. With that in mind, you should pack to ensure you have warmer clothing, especially for the evening, as well as waterproof items in case of wet weather.

If you are going on a camping or walking/trekking trip, you will likely need to bring some specialty items, including hiking boots, breathable non-cotton hiking t-shirts, a sleeping bag, a towel and suitable layers for rugging up.

If you are traveling in North America over winter, it's recommended that you're prepared for temperatures that can easily fall below 32ºF. This means bringing waterproof clothing, especially shoes with good grip for walking across snow or ice, as well as cold weather gear such as gloves, thermals, fleece and headwear, such as beanies.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The Ultimate 10 Day Northeast USA Itinerary (+ 1 and 2 week options)

Thinking of visiting the Northeastern Region of the USA? Look no further than this 10 day Northeastern USA travel itinerary.

The Northeast region of the United States is a beautiful and historically rich area that offers a ton of unique travel experiences. Whether you’re interested in exploring bustling cities, enjoying the great outdoors, or soaking up some American history, there’s something for everyone in the Northeast.

With so many incredible destinations to choose from, planning the perfect itinerary can be overwhelming. But don’t stress, in this guide, I’ll walk you through the process of planning your Northeast USA travel itinerary. We’ll cover all the must-see destinations, the best times to visit, and plenty of tips to help you make the most of your trip.

From the stunning fall foliage in New England to the towering skyscrapers of New York City, the Northeast has it all. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or an outdoors enthusiast, the Northeast is sure to exceed your expectations. So block out your calendar and get ready to explore the very best that the Northeastern USA has to offer!

First a note: these itineraries all start in New York because for international travellers that’s typically the cheapest place to fly in and out of with the most airports and flight options. However, if you’re already in the USA or not concerned about flight costs, it would make sense to start at Boston (the northernmost point on the itinerary) and work your way south or vice versa.

How to get around the Northeastern USA

This itinerary is designed so that you can do it either as a 10 day Northeast USA road trip or travel by bus or train if you prefer not to drive. I’ve personally done it both ways and can tell you the trains are the easiest and most affordable way to get around in the Northeast.

All of the destinations on these itineraries (including the 1 and 2 week options) are along Amtrak’s Northeast Regional train route so you don’t even need to worry about train connections. Most trains stations in the Northeast are right in the center of each city, so you can walk straight off the train and start exploring.

The 10 Day Northeast USA road/train trip itinerary

Days 1-3: new york.

There’s no better place to start a USA road trip than the Big Apple, the concrete jungle where dreams are made of…. While you can (and I have) easily spend a week or more in NYC, 3 days is a good amount of time to see the highlights and get a taste.

It can be overwhelming to know where to start so to make it easy I recommend dedicating one day to each of Midtown and Downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Day 1 – Midtown Manhattan: Start your day in Times Square, the bustling heart of Midtown Manhattan. There’s no better place to take in the bright lights and energy of the city. Here, you can shop at the many stores and boutiques (don’t miss the 3 storey M&Ms store) and grab breakfast or coffee at one of the many cafes.

From there, head to the  Empire State Building , where you can take in breathtaking views of the city from the observation deck. Next, visit the iconic Grand Central Terminal, one of the busiest train stations in the world and a beautiful example of Beaux-Arts architecture.

End your day with a visit to Central Park, the iconic park that spans 843 acres in the heart of Manhattan. Here, you can have a picnic, go for a jog, rent a boat, or simply relax and people watch. It’s not advised to do a carriage ride as some horses may be mistreated.

Day 2 – Downtown Manhattan: Start your day in Battery Park, where you can catch a ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You have the option of either the free Staten Island Ferry that goes past Liberty Island or the  paid Statue Cruises that lets you get off on Liberty Island, I’ve done both and the paid version is worth the money.

Afterward, take a stroll through the historic Financial District, where you can see the New York Stock Exchange, the Charging Bull statue, and the extremely moving 9/11 Memorial.

If you’re keen for more views you can head up the One World Trade Center Observatory, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

End your day with a stroll through the trendy neighborhoods of SoHo and Greenwich Village, where you can shop, dine, and people-watch to your heart’s content.

Day 3 – Brooklyn and Uptown: On the last day in NYC, make your way across the Brooklyn Bridge, walk around the waterfront with its panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, get your photos in DUMBO and eat your way through Time Out Market.

If you have extra time, explore the Brooklyn Botanic Garden or visit the Brooklyn Museum, which houses an impressive collection of art and artifacts from around the world.

Then spend the afternoon taking in thousands of years of art at The Met and seeing how the other half live on the Upper East Side.

From there, take a subway ride up to Harlem, where you can explore the neighborhood’s rich cultural heritage, visit the famous Apollo Theater, and grab dinner at one of the many soul food restaurants.

To help save money on attractions, try a  Go City pass . They have 2 and 3 day all-inclusive passes that would be perfect for this itinerary –  click here to see how you can save .

Finally, don’t forget to make time for plenty of pizza slices, bagels, pretzels and hot dogs!

Day 4-5: Boston

Drive: 220 miles – approx. 3.5 hours

Train: Amtrak Northeast Regional from Moynihan Train Hall – approx. 4 hours

After the craziness of New York, head up north to the relative calm of Boston, Massachusetts. Boston is a city steeped in history and culture but despite its historic nature the crazy number of universities in Boston means the city has a very young, fun vibe. With world-class museums, delicious food, and beautiful parks, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant city.

Start your trip with a walk along the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile route that takes you through some of Boston’s most important historic sites, including the Massachusetts State House, Paul Revere’s House, and the USS Constitution Museum. Along the way, you’ll learn about the events leading up to the American Revolution and the role Boston played in shaping the country’s history.

There are plenty of  walking tours available  but I’d recommend just downloading an audio guide for the Freedom Trail and going at your own pace. And don’t miss the Boston Public Library, it might not be on the Freedom Trail but it was my favourite spot.

Next, head over to the Museum of Fine Arts, where you can explore over 450,000 works of art from around the world. The museum’s collections range from ancient artifacts to contemporary art, and there’s something for every taste and interest.

If you’re a sports fan, make sure to catch a game at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. And if baseball isn’t your thing, try an ice hockey game, I can promise it will make for a memorable experience.

For foodies, Boston is a paradise with both fresh New England seafood and quality Italian cuisine on offer. Make sure to try the city’s signature clam chowder and lobster rolls as well as Boston cream pie (go to Omni Parker House for the original version), and cannoli from Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry in the North End.

Finally, take a stroll through the beautiful Boston Common, the oldest public park in the country. With over 50 acres of green space, the park is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the city’s natural beauty.

On your second day in Boston, head out to Cambridge to see the Harvard campus (students run  walking tours ) and try some of the fun student bars.

If you have extra time, you can take the train out to Salem to explore the witchy museums and filming locations. It’s only a short ride from North Station or you can take a  day tour from Boston .

Day 6: Providence/Newport

Drive: 50 miles – approx. 1 hour

Train: Amtrak Northeast Regional from Back Bay or South Boston and local bus to Newport – approx. 2 hours total

Rhode Island, the smallest state in the USA, might not be on every Northeast itinerary but it’s very much worth a visit.

Providence itself is quite a small town with a very compact city centre. There are a couple of decent things to do in Providence itself, including visiting the Rhode Island State Capitol – unlike the one in DC, here you’re allowed to just wander around at will and see all the rooms – and the Brown University campus.

However, the number one reason for coming to Providence is because it’s the gateway to Newport, which you’ll want to dedicate most of the day to seeing.

Newport is a beautiful seaside town full of cute boutiques and restaurants, but its biggest draw is the Gilded Age mansions.  These homes are straight out of The Great Gatsby, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyles of America’s wealthiest families during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These grand estates are designed to feel very like European palaces with grand ballrooms, ornate gardens, and stunning ocean views. You can tour these mansions and learn about the families who lived there, including the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Morgans. I recommend picking 2-3 and using the audio tours which are included with your tickets and are super informative.

While you’re in Newport check out the Cliff Walk, a stunning (but windy) hike along the ocean. Warm up afterwards with a hot chocolate or some of the famous New England clam chowder.

The Breakers Mansion Newport

Days 7-8: Philadelphia

Drive: 300 miles – approx. 4.5 hours

Train: Amtrak Northeast Regional from Providence – approx. 5.5 hours

When in Philadelphia, the must-visit attraction is Independence Hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were signed. To visit, you’ll need to book tickets through the National Parks website several weeks (ideally months) in advance of your trip as numbers are strictly limited and security is tight.

Even if you miss out on tickets to Independence Hall you can still line up to go see the Liberty Bell across the street and wander through the remains of George Washington’s house.

Next head across town to another of Philadelphia awesome free attractions, the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This beautiful neoclassical building boasts works from van Gogh and Monet, among many many others.

Finish the day with a visit to the Eastern State Penitentiary, one of the most famous and haunted prisons in the world. The prison’s notable inmates, include Al Capone and the bank robber “Slick Willie”. If you’re brave enough, sign up for the night tour to discover the spookiest stories from the prison’s history.

Start your second day in Philadelphia with a visit to the Museum of the American Revolution , where you can learn about the events leading up to the American Revolution and the impact it had on the country and the world. The museum features interactive exhibits, including a replica of a colonial-era privateer ship and Goerge Washington’s tent. We enjoyed the short talks from the educators explaining the artefacts in each room.

If you’re a really dedicated fan of America history you can also head over to the Betsy Ross House, where the first American flag was allegedly sewn and take a guided tour of the house to learn about the life of Betsy Ross and the history of the flag.

For lunch head to the Reading Terminal Market, one of the oldest and largest public markets in the country. This is a food’es paradise and the place to go to try local dishes including Philly cheesesteaks, Pennsylvania Dutch pretzels, and Amish donuts.

If you haven’t succumbed to a food coma then spend the rest of the day strolling through the historic district and waterfront, where you can see many other historic sites, including Franklin Court, site of Benjamin Franklin’s home.

  • Mid-range:  The Warwick Hotel Rittenhouse Square

Independence Hall, Philadelphia

Days 9-10: Washington DC

Drive: 150 miles – approx. 2.5 hours

Train: Amtrak Northeast Regional from Philadelphia 30 th  Street – approx. 2 hours

There’s no better place to wrap up your vacation in the Northeast United States than in the nation’s capital: Washington, D.C.

One of the best things about visiting D.C. is how much you can do for free. The city is home to countless museums, galleries, monuments, and historic buildings that are open to the public.

However, one important piece of advice: it’s essential to plan ahead and book your visits. Many places will book out months in advance, and even those that allow some walk-ins will often require you to spend a long time queuing outside which is no fun in the heat/wind/rain.

If you’re hoping to tour the White House, don’t expect it to be easy. The booking process requires US residents to apply through their local congressman process. The White House website suggests that foreigners can apply through their embassy, but we found that our embassies weren’t even taking bookings.

The Capitol, on the other hand, is much easier to get into, you do need to book but they can get large numbers of visitors through in a day so it’s not hard to get tickets. The Capitol is a must-do. You can’t see in the actual Senate or House chambers but the beautiful rotunda and National Statuary Hall are well worth it in themselves, we loved seeing the statues each state had chosen to donate.

Continuing on the must-see attractions in D.C., walking along the National Mall is a must. This beautiful parkland features the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and a variety of other monuments and memorials.

If you’re an art lover, don’t miss the National Gallery. This beautiful museum houses tons of amazing artworks including one by Leonardo Da Vinci. Whatever your interests, D.C. is sure to delight and inspire you with its wealth of cultural and historic offerings.

Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting Northeastern USA

True to the name, the Northeast covers the area from the Canadian border in the North down to (depending on who you ask) Washington DC on the Virginia border and inland as far as the Ohio border including 11 states.

To avoid the summer crowds and the freezing Northeastern winters, the best time to visit is in late spring (May-June) and early fall (October-November), these are also good times to catch the cherry blossoms or the fall foliage respectively.

For a first-time visitor, 10 days is enough time to see the highlights of the American Northeast but if you can stay a full 2 weeks you’ll get to see even more.

In Short: 10 Days in the Northeastern USA

It’s hard to narrow down the best parts of the Northeast to a short itinerary as there’s so much to see and do and there’s no wrong way to see this part of the USA. Hopefully, these Northeast USA itineraries give you some inspiration to get started!

FAQs for Northeast tour packages

1.In which month should you visit the North East?

This depends on the part of the North East you plan to visit. If you want to go to Meghalaya, try to arrange a package between October and April. Again for Assam, November to March is the best time. If your North East tour package is focused on Arunachal Pradesh, October to April is ideal.

2.How to plan the best Northeast trip?

North East is a vast place. You can only complete part of the North East in a single trip. You’ll have to arrange for separate tour packages. If you plan to visit during the summers, try going to Sikkim, Tawang, Nagaland and Meghalaya. Again in the winter visiting Arunachal Pradesh is a better option. You can also add Assam and Manipal to the list for winter tour packages. Cherrapunji is famous for its monsoon vibes. Hence you can plan to visit the same during the monsoons.

3.Do I Need a Permit to Visit the Northeast?

Out of the 7 North East states, you’ll need inner-line permits to visit Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram. You can either get it online or ask the Guwahati airport to help you with the same.

4. What is the weather condition in the North East?

The weather conditions are highly unpredictable. In winter, you’ll experience high snowfall in the Tawang region again in Meghalaya. Although the temperatures are high, you’ll certainly not experience any snowfall. The regions do not exhibit high summers.

5. Is Northeast a safe place to visit?

Ensure you get the permits, contact a local tour operator and follow the guidelines while in any of the North East states. Under such circumstances, visiting the North East is safe.

6. What are the major cuisines of the Northeast?

Some famous signature dishes of the North East are Thupka, Bamboo shoot fry, momos, Grilled shrimp, Jadoh, Pitha, Smoked pork curry and Bhangui. Make sure you try them when you visit the palace.

7. What are the family-friendly places of the North East?

If you’re planning a family trip, you should avoid the off-beat destinations as most portions of the North East are rugged and have high terrains. Gangtok, Shillong and Sikkim are soulful places for family relaxation.

8. What can you buy as a souvenir during the North East tour?

Assam silk is a must if you visit Assam. If you’re planning a trip to Darjeeling, Sikkim, and Guwahati, buy ample tea. You can also try bamboo handicrafts from Meghalaya and Nagaland.

5 incredible fall getaways in the Northeast

Laura Itzkowitz

This story has been updated with new information.

Summer is winding down, and autumn is close behind. Fall brings a welcome respite from summer's heat and humidity, a handful of long weekends (including Labor Day and Thanksgiving) and glorious landscapes bursting with colorful foliage .

If you live in the Northeast, you're especially well-positioned to take advantage of all the joys fall brings, from meals made with farm-fresh produce to leisurely, scenic drives through forests transformed into kaleidoscopic backdrops.

To help you sort through the region's spate of charming towns, we zeroed in on five destinations within driving distance of New York City , Boston and other Northeastern hubs — all with compelling reasons to visit this fall.

Remember to bring along a good credit card for earning points on gas purchases if you're planning on a leaf-peeping drive and be sure to book soon.

The Catskills

north east tour in october

Depending on where you live, you could escape to the mountainous, sometimes rural areas of the Catskills in just over two hours. This area of rippling terrain is punctuated by rambling rivers and waterfalls, making it perfect for scenic fall foliage hikes and drives.

Consider the Giant Ledge and Panther Mountain trails, near Big Indian; Kaaterskill Falls in Hunter, New York; the hike to the restored fire tower on Mount Tremper, near Phoenicia; and the Overlook Mountain trailhead just outside Woodstock.

The Catskills region is in the midst of another resurgence , making it easy for even frequent visitors to experience a new, undiscovered part of the sprawling wilderness areas.

Consider the Urban Cowboy Lodge in Big Indian from $360 per night (opt for a room with a clawfooted soaking tub or an outdoor cedar tub) or Kenoza Hall , from the area's esteemed Foster Supply Hospitality. The 55-acre property dates back to the 1800s and room rates start at $349 per night. Or, splurge to stay at The Chatwal Lodge , a new rustic getaway from the man behind The Chatwal, a Luxury Collection hotel near Times Square in Manhattan. Rooms here start at $1,200 a night.

Saratoga Springs

north east tour in october

If you thought the only thing to do in Saratoga Springs was to go to the racetrack, think again. This city about four hours north of New York City is having a bit of a renaissance, thanks to some excellent new hotel openings and the Upper Hudson Wine Trail , which features an ever-growing roster of family-run vineyards and wineries.

If you visit between mid-September and early October, you might even catch the harvesting action. From here, you can easily explore scenic Lake George and the high peaks of the Adirondacks.

The Brentwood Hotel , which opened in 2016 in a revamped motor lodge, is a frontrunner on the scene. Designed by Brooklyn-based Studio Tack, the 12-room boutique hotel features equestrian motifs inspired by its location just steps from the racecourse; rooms start at $300 per night.

Joining it is the historic Adelphi Hotel , which emerged from a top-to-bottom renovation in 2017 with charming rooms starting at around $259. Even if you're not staying in the hotel, be sure to elbow up to the bar at Morrissey's, named for the yarn-spinning sportsman who brought horse racing to town.

The Berkshires

north east tour in october

The secret's out about this mountainous region in western Massachusetts. Equidistant from New York City and Boston, the Berkshires make for a perfect fall getaway complete with excellent hiking, cultural attractions and great places to spend the night.

There are plenty of ways to fill your fall days in this area. Housed in a complex of 19th-century mill buildings in North Adams, MASS MoCA , or the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, has long been a pilgrimage site for art lovers. Don't miss Sol LeWitt's staggering wall drawings — a cornerstone of the museum since they were installed in 2008. The area is also home to the Norman Rockwell Museum (for which you should purchase timed tickets in advance of your trip) and The Mount , Edith Wharton's mansion in Lenox.

Miraval Berkshires is the third iteration of the wellness-focused chain. Guests can try horseback riding at Meadowview Stables, take classes on beekeeping, hike in the adjacent forest and enjoy relaxing treatments at the 29,000-square-foot Life in Balance spa. As part of the World of Hyatt program, an off-peak award night at this Category 12 resort will cost you 40,000 points for single occupancy, with cash rates from about $650 this fall.

Travelers can also bed down at the ajacent Wyndhurst Mansion , which occupies a Gilded Age mansion and cottage. The complex has elegant rooms, an outdoor pool, an 18-hole golf course and a fitness center. There are also two restaurants — a tavern serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as the upscale 1894 Fireside Bistro serving lunch and dinner.

The Hudson Valley

north east tour in october

When it comes to an easy weekend escape from New York City, it's hard to beat the Hudson Valley. The charming town of Hudson is just two hours away via Amtrak or two and a half hours by car.

You can easily post up at the laid-back Rivertown Lodge (starting at $239 per night) or the food-focused Wm Farmer & Sons (starting at $269 per night). Another great option is The Wick, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel which opened in a reborn 19th-century candle and soap-making factory in town (though expect to pay 49,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night if you're booking this fall). There's also The Maker Hotel , an intimate 11-room property spread across three historical buildings downtown; rooms start around $450 per night in the fall, but be prepared for a two- or three-night minimum stay. For a more pastoral setting, head to Amenia and check into Troutbeck — an inn on a historic estate that once played host to Mark Twain, Henry David Thoreau and Teddy Roosevelt. The spacious, airy rooms here will set you back upwards of $435 per night.

Regardless of where you stay, be sure to go sailing on the Hudson, enjoy leisurely hikes and go apple picking. This is fall in New York state, after all.

Central Vermont

north east tour in october

About five hours from New York City and less than three hours from Boston, central Vermont's bucolic mountain landscapes and small-town charm make it the perfect destination for an autumn getaway. The entire state has a population of around 624,000, so you'll find that even the capital of Montpelier feels like the kind of place where everyone knows each other's names.

Situated in the heart of Woodstock, the historic Woodstock Inn & Resort — established by Laurence and Mary Rockefeller — recently emerged from a $16 million renovation to the Federalist-style building and its 142 rooms and suites. You can dine on the farm-to-table fare at the Red Barns and indulge in a spa treatment at the 10,000-square-foot spa. Rates start at $342 per night.

In nearby Barnard, discover the all-inclusive Relais & Châteaux property Twin Farms — a collection of beautifully appointed, art-filled cabins spread across a 300-acre estate starting at $2,550 per night. Here, you can admire the changing leaves on the grounds, soak in the Japanese-style furo, and go canoeing or fly fishing on the property's pond.

I see a lot of people post here with a preconceived plan and then reject a lot of the advice given to them by the experts, so I'm going to be a bit different and come in with a bit of a blank canvas.

Basically I arrive in NYC October 18th and fly out from NYC on November 15th.

The only things set are:

Celtics home game October 26th (tickets not purchased yet, but really, really want to go)

Cedar point October 29th

3 days in NYC 12-15th

Take the Mrs to Philly so she can run up the Rocky stairs.

Looking to do a loop that could involve Northern Vermont, New Hampshire and the coast of Maine, West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland. Or just cut through Pennsylvania if its too much.

So, suggestions of what are the best things to do in each of these areas would be awesome, as are suggestions of a route.

' class=

One problem I see route-wise is that you want to be in Ohio 3 days after you are in Boston, which makes a loop road trip a little hard to plan, since most people might start up the coast -- Boston, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, then maybe through New York (Coopestown, Finger Lakes) to Niagara Falls and then Cedar Point and then points south. I can't really see a way for the trip to make sense without a lot of needless backtracking.

Any chance you might do it backwards and catch the Celtics game on November 11th before heading back to NYC, since you haven't bought your tickets yet? Then you could do a trip that started Philadelphia, Washington and wherever in West Virginia and Maryland you had in mind before heading up to Ohio for Cedar Point on the 29th and then continuing Niagara Falls, Vermont, New Hampshire, etc. Either that, or consider attending a preseason game on the 19th.

Be aware that many attractions of the non-natural variety and some lodging and restaurants in areas like New Hampshire (specifically the White Mountains) and coastal Maine and perhaps Acadia NP will be limited or closed for the season. That doesn't mean a visit wouldn't be worthwhile but it will limit your options. You could still drive the Kancamagus Hwy and visit the Basin in Franconia SP in NH and Portland, ME is a lively place year round.

What specifically were you looking to do in northern VT? Did you mean Burlington? If so, Shelburne Farms would be worth visiting.

West Virginia highlights are the New River Gorge, the Canaan Valley (Blackwater Falls State Park, Seneca Rocks) and Harpers Ferry.

Maryland has Baltimore's Inner Harbor and its excellent aquarium. Also Antietam is interested in battlefields.

Pennsylvania has Hershey Park (limited hours). It also has Gettysburg and Philadelphia (already one of your destinations) for history.

Virginia has more history - Williamsburg, Monticello, Jamestown, etc. and Shenandoah National Park.

Be aware that you will have very short days especially after November 6 (end of Daylight Savings Time) - will be dark at around 5 PM. :(

Yes, I think the backwards loop could be a better option. That would leave more time for the NE. What's the weather like at that time of year? I'm not a very experienced snow driver.

A friend recommended Northern Vermont, but nothing soecufuc, so I'm open to ideas.

Thanks for the advice.

While a backward loop makes sense to accommodate the Celtic game, from a weather/temperature perspective, it might be better to start with the New England side of things first in October then loop through Ohio, then south to Virginia before heading back to NYC.

So, the weather could be my main problem it seems. But through circumstance, this is the only time I can be here. If I head through Niagra, Finger Lakes, Boston, the RI and CT coast between 1st and 15th November, am I likely to see much if any snow?

Would the RI ocean drive still be decent in Nov? Also looking at visiting Mount Monadnock, worthwhile?

I've hiked up Monadnock many times....it's about 3100 ft and a easy hike.I would venture to say it might be snowy up top or below in November, but you could determine that on arrival. You WILL see snow in that region..how much or when is impossible to say...same applies to the drive. Don't think that will be a problem. Here's link with highlights.

http://www.newport-discovery-guide.com/ocean-drive.html

You can do Acadia and the coast of Maine in November it's no problem. It's just a gamble with the weather. When I did it in early November I had 10 days of great weather. But the local in South West Harbor I was staying at told me the year before they had snow on the ground and awful visibility at the same period.. You never know. In my case the main roads were open, including the one to Cadillac Mountain. The only thing that was closed that I regretted were the lobster stands. Otherwise you can hike wherever you want, I was afraid it would be cold and icy in the morning and it wasn't. The top of Cadillac Mountain did experience strong icy winds though.

I wanted to try Baxter State Park in Maine, but the ranger I e-mailed told me it's the worst period of the year (at least if you don't have 4WD) as it's deep mud on the roads. So better stick to the coast or to parks closer to populated areas with mostly paved roads such as in Vermont and New Hampshire. Oh and if you're in Maine, don't miss Maine Beer Company near Freeport, they produce some of the best beers in the country alongside Treehouse or Trillium at the moment. Beer tourism is strong at the moment, and you're visiting some of the best areas for that. Vermont is even trying to coin the term "IPA highway" now.

>this is the only time I can be here. If I head through Niagra, Finger Lakes, Boston, the RI and CT coast between 1st and 15th November, am I likely to see much if any snow?

Good question. I've done travels in snow country and took the chance because it was "the only time" that I could go there. Go. Enjoy the good things and if the weather changes, make the most of it. My wife has family north of Niagara Falls and we always go to see the falls. One of the prettiest times was one foot of snow covering the ground and the falls iced over. Sunrise. Many colors reflecting from the ice. Just stunning!

Safe travels.

There is always a chance for an early big snow dump around Niagara Falls and to a lesser extent the Finger Lakes because of lakes Erie and Ontario. The other areas you asked about (Boston, CT and RI) should be probably be OK.

Thanks everybody. That beer is sounding extremely tempting. I love a good pale ale.

The temperature during the daytime might fluctuate between 12℃-22℃ , and as night comes, the temperature almost reaches zero degrees or minus. North-East India hill stations are covered with a thick layer of snow that offers visitors a paradise. So, if you wish to view snow during your Northeast journey, these months serve as the best time to visit. Apart from this, you can enjoy various other things.

North East off-season months from June to September

Marked by bountiful rain and wet climate, monsoon season in the hills of North East India begins during June’s end and lasts till September. The entire region witnesses heavy downpours throughout the day, resulting in landslides in various slopes that block travel routes. Thus, it is not recommended to visit the region during these months. However, this season acts as an offbeat gateway, where you can view gushing waterfalls and fresh blooming leaves and flowers. Besides this, make sure to enjoy other things if you visit the region during these months.

Notably New England

I joined a Travelling Time tour which was music themed (not mentioned in the initial enquiry). I don’t like country music but somehow that didn’t spoil a tour with a good natured group of people. I was one of three octogenarians and felt I was looked after well. Several of the group had travelled with this company for years ! There was a feeling that not enough research had been done regarding places to stop and places to eat. Personally I would have liked to see a little more of places and regretted not going round Mark Twain’s house in Hartford. Two “free” days in Boston and Martha’s Vineyard were really pleasant spent with a few of the group. It was a bit disappointing to find that two evening meals and breakfast were the only meals included in the tour. The hotels were very comfortable. The Waterbury, Vermont one was the most attractively situated. The coffee machines rarely worked. For me, anyway

Fall Colours of New England (10 Days)

I personally enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. Well organized, all places to visit were chosen thoughtfully. Our guide, Scott, was simply the very right person for the tour, polite and entertaining. There is one comment though I’d like to submit. If only they could afford to give us more quality time to spend on all places we visited, instead of spending so much time on restroom stops, or eating places, I would say the trip was just excellent. still, we loved it very much.

Boston Cape Cod & The Islands (Classic, 8 Days)

Cons: 1. Daniel Webster Inn was over-rated. Would not stay there again. 2. Visit to the Plimouth Plantation was a waste of time. Spent way too much time there. 3. Transportation from Logan Airport to the Boston Hyatt was a mess!!!! No signs, no directions, and the taxi driver had no idea what to do with the voucher. Ended up paying for the taxi! Ridiculous!! 4. Service at the included dinner at the Daniel Webster Inn was horrible!! Kathy (our waitress) should be fired! However, the food was delicious! 5. Not enough time spent in Nantucket. 6. Way too much time spent at the Breakers in Newport. 7. This should not be considered an 8-day tour. All we did on day 8 was ride on the bus to the airport! Pros: 1. Tour director Robin was outstanding!! Wellness director, Brittany, was also fabulous! 2. Canolis, Cape Code Chips and Cape Codders on the bus was a nice touch! Thoroughly enjoyed the snacks on the bus! 3. Ferry to Martha's Vineyard was fun! Thoroughly enjoyed the talk session/information about the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. Very interesting. 4. Local guide tour of Nantucket Island was great! Lots of interesting information. Not enough time spent in Nantucket. 5. Loved the Harbor View hotel! 6. Sailing on the Adirondack II was THE BEST!! Need to offer more than one Mimosa! 7. Luggage service was great.

I was on a fall foliage tour with Globus. The guide was great, the itinerary was also very nice and I enjoyed it very much. I was however disappointed that despite Globus claiming on their website that they have "small group" tours that average 24 people there were 42 on our tour. I guess I should look for advertisement of the total group size instead of thinking that an "average" of 24 would be closer to 24 than to 42! Proof of vaccination was required, which was necessary for me to sign up in the first place but I truly felt deceived that my "small group" was almost double the average.

Spotlight on Boston Tour

Spotlight on Boston

I was a little nervous before the start of the trip because there were some complications trying to confirm the trip. It was partially my fault because I did book the trip relatively last minute, but I do believe there was some miscommunication on both ends that could have been avoided from the very beginning. The biggest problem was the method of communication. I did not understand that in order for the information to be relayed correctly, you had to message through the communication portal on touradar's website. That was not explicitly made clear, and it took several days and conversations with multiple people to finally realize that. Once that was made clear, everything ran much more smoothly, but I definitely think for the customer's sake especially new customer, someone needs to be very clear in explaining that and confirm with the customer by having them relay it back to them. Thankfully, once everything was booked and confirmed, the trip ran wonderfully! I had such a blast. My tour guide was amazing and the group I was with were incredible. I am definitely looking forward to booking another trip in the future.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO Announces 2024 North American Falltour

Facebook icon

“THE OVER AND OUT TOUR” WILL BE THE BAND’S FINAL TOUR

general onsale begins march 22 @ 10 am local time here.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO is set to embark on the band’s final tour dubbed “The Over and Out Tour”. The 27-date trek, produced by Live Nation, will kick off in Palm Desert, CA on August 24 and travel across North America to cities such as New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Seattle before concluding in Los Angeles, CA on October 25.

Artist Presale will begin on Wednesday, March 20 @ 10am local time and the general onsale will start on Friday, March 22 @ 10am local time. Exclusive VIP experiences will be available March 20th at 10am local. Please visit livenation.com and jefflynneselo.com for all details.

Lynne’s North American tour in 2019 delighted massive crowds and drew widespread critical acclaim:

“A brilliant catalog returns to U.S. stages and gives the strings-starved people what they want. The ELO catalog speaks for itself… and it was a glorious thing to behold… in a 19-song set that reprised the closest thing to truly Beatle-level pop the 1970s had to offer.” – Variety

“Jeff Lynne’s ELO prove that spacy pop rock is still a livin’ thing… one of the most flawless and visually stunning arena shows I’ve seen in a long time. Complete with monstrous lights, lasers and the mandatory ELO spaceship hovering behind the band on video screens, the show was as grand and engrossing as a blockbuster movie — a ’70s blockbuster movie, that is.” – LA Weekly

“Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra put on a dazzling display chronicling a war chest of classic rock hits for a sold out crowd.” – Martinez Tribune

“Jeff Lynne’s ELO is practically a religious experience for rock ‘n’ roll disciples” – Houston Press

“For all the gifted musicians that helped achieve Lynne’s perfectionist vision, ELO was always his creation, a neon-hued Frankenstein’s monster built from bits of early rock-and-roll, symphonic themes, Beatles harmonies, and disco beats. All of those pieces came together flawlessly… played to perfection.” – The Philadelphia Inquirer

Known as one of the most iconic forces in music history, in recent years Jeff Lynne’s ELO has delivered a critically acclaimed and chart-topping album along with a sold out run of UK and European shows.  Jeff Lynne was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last year and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. The band has always been known for their epic live shows and with a distinct style that seamlessly and innovatively blends rock, pop and classical, ELO has had more than 20 Top 40 Hits across the U.S. and the U.K., making Lynne’s sweeping productions some of the most recognizable music of the last forty years and helping sell over 50 million records worldwide.

Widely agreed upon as one of the greatest record producers in music history, Lynne was a co-founder and member of The Travelling Wilburys together with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, as well as a producer and collaborator with some of the biggest names in music including The Beatles, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Bryan Adams.

Dornoch Cathedral on our NC500 the North East day Tour is the main subject. Honey-coloured stone bathed in winter sunlight. A single spire, sporting a golden weathercock, rises into a blue sky. There us a clock on the spire. Trees bare of leaves occupy the foreground, together with an ornate black painted fountain, standing in shade.

Why Choose Us

Nc500 far north east day tour – itinerary.

For the North East day tour on the North Coast 500 (NC500) we head north through the Struie Hills. Great views of the Dornoch Firth from a mountain location. Next we make a stop at the beautiful Falls of Shin, because of the short but lovely walk to a viewing platform. Heading due north from Lairg we pass Ben Loyal, Loch Loyal and some wonderful bog scenery. Eventually we arrive at the coast at Tongue. Following the coast eastwards along the far north of Scotland we visit John O Groats, the most northerly point on the public road in the UK. There are fabulous views of the Orkney Islands. We then travel down the dramatic east coast road back towards Inverness, making time to visit the pretty town of Dornoch en route.

Falls of Shin

The River Shin cascades prettily down Achany Glen, and the largest cascade – the Falls of Shin – is one of the best places in Scotland to see Atlantic salmon leaping. The most likely time to see them attempt to leap up the Falls is between May and September. This is the main reason people like to stop here – but the site’s popularity has led to the establishment of gift shop and coffee shop too. As a result, this makes a very good location for a short break on the route north.

Tongue is an attractive village on the Kyle of Tongue on the north coast. Being located in a limestone area, the surroundings are a little like a fertile oasis on the north coast – green fields and native woodland. The Vikings settled here and may have built nearby Castle Varrich. The village and castle then became the main centre of power for Clan Mackay. Tongue remained isolated from the national road network until 1828. Prior to that it’s only links were by sea.

Strathnaver Museum

Strathnaver Museum is located in the old parish church in Bettyhill. It is a fascinating stop, primarily telling the tragic story of the Highland Clearances. There are many other displays within its walls in addition, however. We enjoy the displays on the Picts, and in a totally different field the information on the ecology of the Peatlands. However there are also fine displays about crofting life in general and about Clan Mackay in particular.

Thurso was originally a Viking town, the name meaning Thor’s River, and was later the principal sea-port in the north. From it, as long ago as the 13 th century, great quantities of malt and meal (oats and barley) were annually shipped for the Baltic, from which wood and iron were imported in return.

Castletown Harbour

Castletown was once the capital of the Caithness flagstone industry. The sandstone rock splits perfectly into flagstones. By 1900 there was a workforce of 500 in Castletown alone, and 1,000 across Caithness. The Harbour here is completely constructed from flagstones – and if you ever go for a walk in the City of Westminster, look below your feet – you will be walking on Caithness Flag. Then in 1920 concrete was developed, and that, as they say, was the end of that.

Castle of Mey

Castle of Mey became famous as the Queen Mother’s summer home. When she first saw it, in 1952 it was in a terrible state. There were no bathrooms, and no electricity, and much of the heat from the massive peatfires in the fireplaces was escaping through yawning holes in the roof. Nonetheless the Queen Mother lovingly restored both castle and Gardens, and even though she has since passed on, the trust that she set up in 1996 still continues, and they open the castle to the public during the summer months.

John O Groats

John O Groats is the most northerly point on the UK public roads. Jan de Groot is the Dutchman who is reputed to have given his name to the village as a result of running a 15 th century ferry to Orkney. His name derives from the small denomination (the groat) that served as the ferry toll. His seven sons proved troublesome and argumentative – and for a quiet life created an octagonal house, containing an octagonal table, and so no-one could be said to be at the head of the table. The site of this house was by the mound and flagpole on the site.

The very pretty town of Dornoch is located at the mouth of the Dornoch Firth. The buildings are an attractive honey-coloured stone, and the gardens are a blaze of colour through the summer. The cathedral dominates the centre of Dornoch – a magnificent building erected in 1224 by Gilbert de Moravia. It contains the organ where police found paparazzi hiding, before the christening of Guy Ritchie and Madonna’s son Rocco. The town has a great range of craft and gift shops as well as the beach and a famous golf course.

NC500 far North East day Tour – Price

£680 for the tour.

NC500 far North East day Tour – Departure

The tour departs from your Inverness accommodation, or any transport hub, such as bus station, train station or airport. You tell us, and we’ll be there.

At one point on our Four Day North Coast 500 Tour from Inverness we stand at this pond, across which stands a building with ornate black lettering saying the Glenmorangie Distillery. The pond is reflecting trees and blue sky. On the far side the distillery building is 3 storeys, stone-built and with a corrugated metal roof.

Four Day North Coast 500 Tour from Inverness

A single track road heads into the picture away from us. On either side is a mixture of heather, grass and boulders. Ahead, where the road turns and disappears to us, rears a vast, treeless mountain ridge, wreathed in faint suggestions of thin cloud. Its summits are clothed in light quartzite scree. A couple of waterfalls carve their way downslope like white threads. The sky above is blue.

NC500 – Applecross and Eilean Donan Castle Tour (February to October)

Foreground is a rough landscape of grass and boulders and four houses. Low rocky hills are in the mid-ground, and to the rear a vast, many peaked mountain, lightly dusted with snow, rises into a blue sky.

NC500 – Magical Wester Ross Tour

We stand on a grassy rise, looking over a dry-stone wall, two or three hundred feet above a blue sea inlet. On the distant side of the sea inlet are tiny white shapes of a line of cottages, above which grey mountains rise into cloud. Below us, from this shore, a narrow spit of grass and shingle connects the shore with a grassy rocky bluff that would otherwise be an island. On that bluff there are signs of historical quarrying, a pier, an old stone building and a single white two storey house.

NC500 the North West day Tour (February to October)

The foreground is ocean. Marching in from the right, and rising diagonally across the shot are a whole line of vertical sea-cliffs, topped and also slightly covered by green grass. Just offshore are two enormous rock stacks (and both are pointed like the spires of a church. A third one is closer to us, and has not yet eroded to be seperate from the mainland. There is, however, a large sea arch at sea-level, that suggests the process is well underway.

Rosamunde Pilcher Winter Solstice Tour

Can each person in the party pay separately?

Driver/Guide licencing in Scotland will only allow us to take one payment per tour, so if people in a party wish to split the cost then they arrange that amongst themselves and make one tour payment to us.

Are entries to the various visitor attractions included?

We don’t include entry to the attractions – and that way we leave the day as flexible as possible for you.

Will I need cash with me?

Most places will accept Visa or MasterCard and some will accept American Express. It is always prudent, though, to bring a little cash with you for unexpected eventualities. You will need GBP, not Euros or Dollars.

What will we be doing for lunch?

You are responsible for paying for your own food & drink during your tour. Lunch could be in a café, pub, restaurant or even a picnic at a beauty spot. Your guide can discuss and advise on options when you meet them.

Blinken adds Israel stop to latest Mideast tour as tensions rise over Gaza war

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during a visit to the Philippines that it’s urgent to make humanitarian assistance in Gaza a priority. According to the U.N., 100% of the population in Gaza is at severe levels of acute food insecurity and desperately in need of humanitarian assistance.

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Israel this week as part of his sixth urgent mission to the Middle East since the Israelis’ war with Hamas began in October, as relations between the two countries have soured dramatically in recent weeks.

The visit comes amid a flurry of calls, planned trips by U.S. and Israeli officials and public airings of severe disagreements over the state of the conflict — notably Israeli plans to mount a major military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah and what will happen to Gaza after the war ends.

The State Department said the Israel stop would cap Blinken’s latest Mideast tour that started in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday and will continue in Egypt on Thursday. The top U.S. diplomat will be in Tel Aviv on Friday after talks with Arab leaders and foreign ministers in Jeddah and Cairo focused on the war in Gaza.

“In Israel, Secretary Blinken will discuss with the leadership of the government of Israel the ongoing negotiations to secure the release of all hostages,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said. “He will discuss the need to ensure the defeat of Hamas, including in Rafah, in a way that protects the civilian population, does not hinder the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and advances Israel’s overall security.”

Tensions between the U.S. and Israel over the prosecution of the Gaza war have been mounting for months over rising civilian casualties. And they have intensified as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said he will ignore President Joe Biden’s warnings not to start a large-scale ground operation in Rafah without credible plans to protect innocent Palestinians who have sought refuge there.

Biden, facing a tough re-election campaign ahead of November’s presidential election, is under growing domestic pressure to rein in Israel’s military response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel. Opposition to the war in the United States, Arab nations and much of the rest of the world has shaped the evolution of Blinken’s frequent trips to the region since October.

His first two visits were largely focused on re-affirming U.S. support for Israel in the immediate aftermath of the Hamas attacks, but as civilian Palestinian casualties began to multiply and humanitarian conditions in Gaza deteriorated, his emphasis shifted to boosting humanitarian assistance and protecting innocents.

Since late last year, Blinken has also used his visits to stress the importance of Arab support for “day after” plans for Gaza and trying to coax Israeli leaders into accepting a status for the Palestinians that could help ensure Israel’s long-term security.

As that shift has taken place, though, the situation in Gaza has gotten worse and relations between the U.S. and Israel have nosedived. Public disagreements between Biden and Netanyahu have become more frequent and more intense.

In a phone call with Biden on Monday, their first in more than a month, Netanyahu agreed to send a high-level delegation to Washington to discuss plans for the proposed Rafah operation, and the Pentagon said Tuesday that Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant would visit the U.S. capital next week.

In his talks in Jeddah, Cairo and Tel Aviv, Blinken is expected to focus on attempts to negotiate a cease-fire and hostage release deal, increase humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza by land, air and sea and plan for the territory’s post-conflict future.

In the Red Sea city of Jeddah, Blinken met with Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. The prospect of normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel is seen as a potential point of leverage in pushing the Israelis on easing civilian suffering in Gaza.

Blinken and Prince Faisal “discussed the urgent need to protect all civilians in Gaza and immediately increase humanitarian assistance to those in need,” the State Department said, adding that “resolving the conflict” and “preparing for the post-conflict phase” remain a top priority.

Blinken also “emphasized the United States’ commitment to achieving sustained peace through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel,” the department said in a statement.

But the Saudis have made clear that normalization won’t happen unless it is accompanied by a clear commitment from Israel to accept an independent Palestinian state by a date certain. Netanyahu and many members of his far-right government are opposed to a Palestinian state.

In Cairo on Thursday, Blinken will see Egyptian officials as well as meet with a six-member Arab committee that includes foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Morocco and the Palestinian Authority, according to an Egyptian diplomat.

This group has been charged with exploring ways to revamp, reform and revitalize the Palestinian Authority for a possible governance role in Gaza once the war is over. The West Bank-based Palestinian Authority has committed to reforms and replaced some of its top leadership.

Blinken’s discussions are also expected to touch on the cease-fire negotiations that have taken on new urgency as the humanitarian situation in Gaza has become increasingly dire.

Qatari officials, whose country is the main interlocutor with Hamas, said this week they were “cautiously optimistic” after talks with Israel’s intelligence chief in Doha. But, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said Tuesday that an Israeli ground operation in Rafah would set back any talks.

At least 31,819 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead. A United Nations food agency warned that “famine is imminent” in northern Gaza .

Palestinian militants killed some 1,200 people in the surprise Oct. 7 attack out of Gaza that triggered the war, and and abducted another 250 people. Hamas is still believed to be holding some 100 people hostage, as well as the remains of 30 others.

Israel-Hamas war latest: Three countries reject US-sponsored Gaza ceasefire resolution in Security Council vote

A US-sponsored resolution calling for "the imperative of an immediate and sustained ceasefire" in Gaza has failed to pass in the UN Security Council.

That's all for today, but we'll be back soon with regular updates and analysis.

Scroll down to read what happened during the day.

Israel’s military has said it has opened an investigation into an airstrike that appears to have killed five Palestinians in the southern Gaza Strip.

Aerial footage of the episode circulating on social media shows four men walking along a dirt road before they are hit in the strike.

A fifth man is then hit as he tries to run away.

The origin of the footage remains unclear.

But in a statement Friday, the army said the airstrike had occurred in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis - a focus of army operations against Hamas - in early February.

It said the video was being investigated by its "fact finding" body tasked with investigating potential crimes by its forces.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken's visit to Israel – following the vetoes on the US's ceasefire resolution - was awkward timing.

America made its point but ultimately its language – albeit strengthened in the last few weeks – wasn't strong enough for others.

The Biden administration has been losing its patience with Benjamin Netanyahu of late, most notably because of concerns Israel is not allowing enough humanitarian aid into Gaza and plans to launch a ground offensive in Rafah – Mr Blinken made it clear the White House doesn't think that is the right course of action.

Mr Netanyahu though has posted on social media today saying they will go it alone if they have to.

I'm not convinced they will – I suspect a compromise will be found that keeps the US on side.

Diplomatic work has been going on behind the scenes between the US and Israel for a plan to enter Rafah that would be palatable, crucially without the potential for a further significant loss of life there.

An Israeli delegation is heading to the US next week to discuss that very matter.

It is Israel's strong belief that if they don't go into Rafah, they won't have finished the job of eliminating Hamas. In military terms, that is logical.

However the concern is the fate of more than a million people who are in the city, so the US wants a plan that would safeguard them, and if what the vice president said today "there is nowhere safe for them to go" then the US administration isn't convinced there is any viable solution.

Meanwhile, talks are ongoing in Qatar between Israel and Hamas over a ceasefire deal. Some gaps remain between the two sides, but things seem to be heading in the right direction.

Here's the moment Russia and China, two permanent members of the UN Security Council, voted against the proposal - defeating the US-sponsored resolution which called for the "imperative of an immediate and sustained ceasefire". Algeria also voted against the resolution.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken has been speaking in Tel Aviv after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He said they discussed the "imperative" of sustaining humanitarian aid to Gaza but focused on hostage negotiations during this trip.

Speaking before he departed Israel, Mr Blinken warned that a proposed Rafah offensive "risks killing more civilians".

He added: "It risks wreaking greater havoc with the humanitarian assistance. It risks further isolating Israel around the world and jeopardising its long-term security and standing,"

He said the US was "intensely engaged" in ceasefire talks in Doha which were also ongoing today.

The secretary of state also added that the UN resolution was "cynically vetoed" by Russia and China.

Mr Blinken greeted demonstrators in Tel Aviv who are demanding Israel focus on the release of hostages held by Hamas, promising the protesters that he was working to bring them home.

Several dozen people, including some family members of hostages, gathered outside a Tel Aviv hotel where Mr Blinken's delegation was based.

More on the talks in Israel this afternoon.

The country's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, told Antony Blinken that Israel is prepared to continue its war against Hamas alone, amid tense relations between the two allies over the six-month-old conflict.

In a one-on-one meeting, Mr Netanyahu said he told Mr Blinken he appreciated US support in its fight against Hamas and that Israel recognises it needs to protect civilians.

However, he reiterated plans to push into Rafah, against the territory's southern border fence, where more than one million people have taken refuge in makeshift shelters.

"I also said that we have no way to defeat Hamas without going into Rafah and eliminating the rest of the battalions there.

"I told him that I hope we will do it with the support of the US, but if we have to - we will do it alone," he said in a video statement to reporters.

Israel claims Rafah is the last bastion for Hamas militants and has a plan to evacuate civilians.

But Washington says a ground assault would be a "mistake" and cause too much harm to those displaced there.

The US vice president Kamala Harris has said there is no safe exit from Rafah for civilians - where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to send troops as Washington presses for more humanitarian aid.

"There is nowhere for these people to go and be safe,” Ms Harris told reporters as she departed for a trip to Puerto Rico and Florida.

It comes after the UN Security Council did not pass a US-sponsored resolution that called for "the imperative of an immediate and sustained ceasefire" in Gaza.

There is no world crisis grave enough to forge unity at the UN, one that reaches beyond the political dynamic of vested interest.

It was never looking like the resolution would pass, not since the Russians had taunted the Americans over their loose language - the "imperative" around an immediate ceasefire.

As the Russians put it, an imperative to put our $100 in our pocket doesn't mean there's $100 in our pocket.

There are solid arguments behind the Russia/China/Algeria veto. To state that Joe Biden has domestic political difficulties created by the US stance is to state a fact.

The US ambassador had other words for it - audacity and hypocrisy on the part of Russia.

Not for the first time in the UN building in mid-town Manhattan, the interests of the people of Gaza and a growing catastrophe suddenly felt a long way away.

So no resolution, but it's not a day without significance.

America has shifted its position on a ceasefire and, incrementally, increased pressure on Israel.

As important as discussions were around the Security Council table, the more immediate impact, practically, is always going to come from talks in Qatar on an actual ceasefire and actual hostage release.

It's a form of words presented to players at the UN that will resonate with the key players in Qatar.

All 27 European Union leaders released a statement overnight calling “for an immediate humanitarian pause leading to a sustainable ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages and the provision of humanitarian assistance".

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, whose country currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, said the EU position is largely in line with that of the United States.

EU countries have long been divided over their support for Israel and the Palestinians - in December, two EU members voted against calling for "an immediate humanitarian ceasefire" while four countries abstained.

The British ambassador to the UN said she was "deeply disappointed that Russia and China were unable to support this council".

"Through this resolution, the Security Council would have, rightly and for the first time, unequivocally condemned armed Hamas terrorist attacks," Dame Barbara Woodward said.

"We are disappointed that the council was not able to send this important message.

"We welcome the patient and constructive consultation by the United States on this text."

She added: "For our part, we will continue to do everything we can to get aid into Gaza as quickly as possible by land, sea and air.
