Recent tour reviews

Caught him at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with an entire Los Angeles Philharmonic to back him up. Honestly wasn't very impressed.

He didn't really even greet the audience until four songs in. His stage performance is reminiscent a lurpy, Willy Wonka-esque, even more spastic impression of Elaine from Seinfeld.

You'd expect a mostly drab singer with good relatable lyrics to emphasize the volume of his own vocals, but instead we heard a muffled beard practice its own ventriloquism with a human dummy.

He mentioned toward the end of the set that he wouldn't be performing an encore and even made fun of the concept of leaving the stage only return minutes later.

But then he did it anyway only after we had already left our seats and the 15 year old Disney employees guarded the doors from any returning patrons with the useless programs they continually spent the entire evening trying to shove down our throats.

What a joke.

Cool looking venue though.

FJM provides one of the best shows I've ever had the pleasure of attending. The stage is filled, the crowd is packed and the music is a religious experience.

The gig itself was great. The venue was relaxed and open with food provided (but why you'd bother I don't know...). I've heard it took upwards of two hours to get served for a pizza there, though I mean, really, what did you expect? Waiter service? If you're at a concert to sample the cuisine you need to reconsider your choices imo.

Opening for FJM were The Orielles, Hookworms and Edwyn Collins. The first two were great - Hookworms especially (Check out their track 'Negative Space' if you haven't heard of them), and Edwyn Collins was cool too, with James Kirk (if I'm not mistaken the original guitarist from Orange Juice) nigh-on stealing the show with his solo parts.

Not to be outdone, Josh followed James with the best show I've seen him do ever. Accompanied by the usual supsects (no, not the covers band), FJM provided beautiful guitars and magical vocals with an exceptional group of musicians behind him.

Ultimately it was an amazing gig that I can't have enjoyed any more. To those that I've seen moaning about food queues, get over yourselves. To those moaning about people talking during sets, move away from the fringes of the crowd into the middle sections, where there was nothing but singing. To those moaning about people smoking at an outdoor gig; stop.

The album, Tillman’s fifth overall, featured the singles ‘Funny Girl’ , ‘Q4’ , ‘Goodbye Mr. Blue’ and ‘The Next 20th Century’ .

Kacey Musgraves announces world tour in support of new album 'Deeper Well,' new song

fr john misty tour

Kacey Musgraves is back on the road in a brand new, 44-date world tour in support of her fifth studio album, " Deeper Well ," which arrives on March 15.

The Grammy-winning performer will kick off the tour in Dublin on April 28, while the North American leg commences on Sept. 4 in State College, Pennsylvania and ends in Nashville on Dec. 7. Supporting artists for the Deeper Well World Tour include Madi Diaz, Father John Misty , Lord Huron and Nickel Creek.

A trio of NBC-related appearances in the next two weeks — on "Saturday Night Live" on this week, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 14 and the "Today" show on March 15 — will accompany the album release.

Musgraves has also partnered with Jack Daniel's to allow fans to win a unique concert experience . One fan will have the chance to meet Musgraves at an upcoming show; plans for the location and time of the meet-and-greet show are in the works.

The tour announcement arrives with the announcement of another "Deeper Well" track, " Too Good To Be True ."

"Please don't make me regret opening up that part of myself that I've been scared to give again," she sings on the sparsely arranged guitar ballad.

"Deeper Well" offerings to date note how Musgraves' time spent in Manhattan's West Village and the iconic Electric Lady Studios — in a manner akin to Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger, plus writers like Allen Ginsburg and Jack Kerouac — inspired what she told Apple Music Radio's Zane Lowe was a different "mojo" and "energy" than Nashville at-present in creating the album.

Sonically, the album is a collection of self-described "classic songs" that involve "harsher" sounds and synths, a few "softer songs," and the influence of wanting to return to an "organic wooden instrument place and just no punches pulled."

"Deeper Well" is the 14-track follow-up to Musgraves' critically acclaimed 2021 album "Star-Crossed" and a past year that saw her achieve her first No. 1 entry on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for the recent Grammy-winner (Best Country Song by a Duo or Group) "I Remember Everything," a duet with Zach Bryan .

Kacey Musgraves Books Fall Arena Tour, With Father John Misty, Nickel Creek Among Openers

Kacey Musgraves has revealed a deep itinerary for her "Deeper Well" tour, with a run through U.S. arenas set for the fall after she hits Europe in the spring. The North American tour will have her topping a triple bill, with Father John Misty opening the entire way, and Nickel Creek and Lord Huron trading places in the third spot.

The three-month U.S. leg starts just after Labor Day with a Sept. 4 show in State College, Penn., wrapping up with a two-night hometown stand at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena Dec. 6-7.

Notable stops along the way include two nights at L.A.'s Kia Forum (Oct. 3-4), a pair of evenings at Brooklyn's Barclays Center (NOv. 15-16), additional two-nighters in Boston (Sept. 6-7), Dallas (Nov. 22-23) and Austin (NOv. 26-27), and single nights in locales from Seattle to Orlando.

Father John Misty and Nickel Creek will open all the U.S. shows from the September kickoff through the L.A. Forum shows in early October. Thereafter, as the tour hits the Northeast and South through its early December Nashville finale, it'll be Father John Misty and Lord Huron in the opening slots.

Meanwhile, it's Madi Diaz slated to open the shorter run of nine European dates. Those two weeks' worth of shows begin April 28 in Dublin and wrap up May 14 with a gig at London's roundhouse. (See the full list of dates, below.)

Tickets for the AEG Presents-promoted tour go on sale next week. An American Express cardholder presale starts March 5 at 10 a.m. local time. The general on-sale time is March 8 at 10 a.m. local time. Resale tickets are also available on Stubhub , VividSeats and Seatgeek .

Additionally, Musgraves released a second preview track from her "Deeper Well" album Thursday, titled "Too Good to Be True." The full album comes out March 15.

Musgraves is set to appear on "Saturday Night Live" March 2. (Chances are she won't be naked again, although the mere possibility may drive tune-in.)

deeper well track album announce single

Kacey Musgraves ‘ arrow is leading her into U.S. arenas this fall, where she’ll be doing a show rooted in her new album, “Deeper Well,” which, as the title indicates, is about embracing the realness of life. Is that a message and a mood that will carry over into a setting more often associated with big-scale surface pleasures? She’s confident the vibe will indeed translate from the grooves to the loges — for, as she puts it, “I think that you can have quote-unquote ‘bops’ in many different ways.”

You proved with the “Star-Crossed” tour that you can headline arenas and make music that is largely based in reflection work in those spaces.

My ultimate goal here is to make an arena feel as intimate as possible. I think that’s a challenge in a room that is massive and made of concrete, and there are people physically sitting very far away from you when you’re performing. It’s my goal to make everyone feel welcome and to create a world that feels really beautiful and memorable to see live. And also, I think from the second that Nickel Creek , who are opening all the shows, and then our other openers, Lord Huron and Father John Misty , step on stage, it’s gonna be a night of extremely, extremely beautiful music. I’m a huge fan of all the acts that are gonna be out there with me.

It’s unusual to see this potent a triple bill, where you have two openers each night who are very established and have been headlining for years on their own at least at the theater level.

You’ve got European dates in May, and then you take a break from tour until Labor Day, and pretty much the day after that, whoosh, you’re out there on the road for the rest of the year in the U.S. Is fall just when it made the most sense to do the American bookings, or is there any sense in your mind that autumn is actually like a good time to go see this music? You’ve got the album for spring and tour for fall, the slightly off-summer seasons, and maybe that’s not coincidental?

I know. As of now, my summer is off, and I’m kind of skeptical of that. I’m not sure it’s really gonna be off. But no, this record is very spring- and summer-centric for me. It was honestly sort of hard to figure out when I wanted to release it, because this music feels like both seasons to me. But there’s sort of an element of growth, of rebirth, (reflected in) the album coming out near the spring equinox. There’s all the baby animal-like spring energy in a lot of the imagery. As for the tour, there’s sort of an inward turn whenever fall comes and the season’s changing and you’re kind of preparing to take it a little bit slower, and I think that element is in this music too.

A lot of people who know they’re touring at the arena level gravitate toward that feeling of, “I’ve really gotta load up my album with some rockers or some dance songs to get the crowd raging.” And it doesn’t seem like this album is driven by that kind of thinking, any more than others were. You must have developed this faith that you don’t have to deliberately think about riling up an arena crowd with token rabble-rousers when you’re setting a mood with an album.

Right. It’s gonna translate, without me worrying about that. I’m not sure anyone has really come to my music for BPMs anyways. There’s a few that stick out above a certain mid-tempo-like BPM, but I’ve never really been overly concerned with tempo. I think that you can have quote-unquote “bops” in many different ways. Like, “Rainbow” is a ballad, but it could be considered a bop! You know what I mean? There’s just different kinds of bops for different reasons. And I’ll make sure that there’s good energy during the show, but I’m not super overly concerned with it. It’s funny, I was talking to a friend the other day and I was like, “I know the gays want their uptempo anthems; that’s what the kids want. But what if this record isn’t really giving them that?” And he’s like, “Kacey, the gays and the kids don’t come to your records for that. They come to you for something else.” And I was like, “OK, you’re right.”

There’ve been two teaser songs out, “Deeper Well” and “Too Good to Be True.” There’s a lot of contentment in those two songs, but “Deeper Well” is more pure in the surety of that contentment, maybe, and then “Too Good to Be True” is about feeling it with just a little bit of uncertainty around the edges. But both give a sense the album is going to be about a good vibe.

You just did those two songs on “SNL.” How did you feel about the experience this time?

“SNL” and all TV performances are always riddled with anxiety for me. And it was really cool because this time I was able to really ground and harness a lot of that anxiety that would normally overtake me. I think that’s probably something that a lot of people probably wouldn’t guess about me — that I can really have a lot of performance anxiety in those type of situations. But I felt more grounded than ever and I was able to really enjoy the experience, which is what it’s all about. I can easily walk away from a lot of those high-pressure situations not having enjoyed it until they’re over, and this time was different, and I felt like I was really able to enjoy it, and that made me really happy.

There were some headlines about “wardrobe malfunction,” but it didn’t turn out to be so scandalous — it was that you, yourself, had posted that you left a hair clip in when you left the dressing room to go out for the final bow. Most everyone who noticed it probably thought it was a deliberate sort of asymmetrical look.

Yeah, definitely an oversight. Me and my team were so detail-oriented. It was just really funny to me that literally no one caught the fact that I still had this clip in there that just like wasn’t supposed to be there. But, you know — it was real.

Thinking back about the tour — you’ve definitely had “light one up” anthems over the years, from “Follow Your Arrow” to “Slow Burn.” But the song “Deeper Well” is about no longer feeling like you need that as a daily crutch or habit. When you play that live, do you think people will still be lighting one up, even though you’re singing about, oh, I can do without this?

That’s so funny. I mean, to each their own. If they feel like it, go ahead!
