Wyoming on map, about hunting in wyoming.

Any hunter who dreams of wide-open spaces and herds of plentiful big game will find that their hunting dreams lead to Wyoming. The state is a huge, high plateau broken by many wild, remote mountain ranges. Elk, mule deer, grizzlies, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep inhabit the high country of mountain ranges such as the Wind River and Teton ranges in the west, the Big Horns in the northcentral, and the Snowy Range in the south. The sweeping high plains of Wyoming are covered with cattle and cowboys, and the productive rangeland is shared with impressive herds of pronghorn antelope, deer, and elk. Wyoming’s most sought-after game animals are pronghorn, elk, moose, mule deer, and white-tailed deer. The state also offers hunts for bighorn sheep, bison, black bears, mountain lions, wolves, mountain goats, turkeys, and upland birds. Elk are plentiful on public and private lands in both mountains and plains regions. Mule deer are found throughout the state, both on the plains and in the mountains, while whitetails are plentiful in the Black Hills region in northeastern Wyoming and in many farming areas and creek bottoms around the state. But Wyoming is best known for its pronghorn—more commonly called “antelope.” Wyoming has more pronghorn antelope than anywhere else on the North American continent, and success rates for hunters exceed 85 percent. Most Wyoming hunting is managed via a limited quota system, which means there are a set number of licenses for each hunting area, and hunters have to apply for licenses well in advance of the season. That means planning ahead is a must if you want to hunt in Wyoming. To hunt in Wyoming, you also need a conservation stamp and proof of completing a hunter safety course. Wyoming also requires big-game hunters to wear at least one item of fluorescent orange while hunting. Wyoming has more than 30 million acres of public land, making it a hunter’s paradise. Some of these areas are federally designated wilderness areas, and Wyoming law stipulates that nonresident big game hunters are required to use the services of a professional outfitter or resident guide when hunting in wilderness areas. All outfitters must be licensed by the Wyoming Board of Outfitters and Professional Guides. The Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Association, www.wyoga.org , is a great source of information on guides and outfitters in Wyoming. For more information on hunting in Wyoming and to apply for a license, contact the Wyoming Game & Fish Department: wgfd.wyo.gov .

WHAT OUR HUNTERS SAY

Dustin, Rich and the entire Big Horn Outfitters team work their butts off to provide the best hunting experience for each client. These guys know where the animals are at, what they are doing and will work tirelessly to make sure every hunter gets an opportunity. When your hunt is over the lodging, food and accommodations are all second to none. I can't recommend these guys enough to anyone looking for a high-quality Western hunt.

Justin Zarr

I have been on several guided hunts before and have been fortunate enough to have taken game on all of them. This hunt, by far, was my most successful. Big Horn Outfitters is a First Class operation from start to finish. Unmatched hospitality, great food, guide knowledge, and most importantly the game was plentiful and of great quality. Big Horn Outfitters treated us like family and went out of their way to ensure we had a great experience.

I can’t say enough about the experience I had with Big Horn Outfitters. My partner and I each shot a bull with our bows, but far more important was the great time we had doing it. The guides were hard working, enjoyable to be with and run a first class operation in every way. I have been on many western hunts over the last 20 years and Big Horn Outfitters is by far the best I have ever experienced. I highly recommend them!

Robert K Laird - Elk taken on hunting trip with Soda Peak Outfitters

Robert K Laird

I recently went on the Teton Wilderness Mule Deer Hunt with Soda Peak Outfitters and it was an experience I will never forget. As an avid hunter, I have been on many hunts before, but this one was truly special. The area we hunted in is not typically known for producing giant mule deer, but my guide, Steve, was able to help me find a mule deer that exceeded all of my expectations. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed with the professionalism and expertise of the Soda Peak Outfitters team. They were knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife, and their passion for hunting was infectious. I felt confident and excited to be out in the wilderness with them. The hunt itself was an adventure. We traversed through rugged terrain, crossed streams, and climbed mountains, all in search of the perfect mule deer. Steve’s keen eye and expert skills led us to a magnificent mule deer that I am still over the moon about. The entire experience was challenging, but incredibly rewarding. I cannot recommend the Teton Wilderness Mule Deer Hunt with Soda Peak Outfitters enough. If you are looking for a top-notch hunting experience with experienced guides who are passionate about what they do, look no further. This hunt exceeded all of my expectations and I cannot wait to go back again.

Wyoming’s vast landscapes provide miles of wide open space for wildlife to roam. To see the state in its most natural form, experience Wyoming’s breathtaking scenery and wild spirit through a hunting trip.

In addition to wide-open spaces and wild scenic countryside, Wyoming features small and big game hunting and vast herds of wildlife. Nearly every species of North American big game exists in large and sustainable numbers within the state, including elk, moose, deer, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep and mountain goat.

For many residents in Wyoming, hunting is more than an activity or diversion; it’s a way of life. Hunting trips for small and big game are a family tradition, and there are still many towns where residents greet each other in the fall by asking, “Did you get your elk yet?” Wyomingites are fierce about maintaining the health and welfare of their herds as well as filling their freezers for the winter. Nutritious and natural protein from wild game is the ultimate in locally sourced food.

Visitors should enhance their hunting experience and increase their opportunity to be successful by contracting with a certified outfitter or guide from the Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Association (WYOGA) . In addition to a worthwhile hunting trip, many guides and outfitters offer fishing excursions, horse-pack trips, back-country wilderness adventures and accommodations. Even non-hunters can see wildlife in its natural state and experience Wyoming’s breath-taking scenery and wild spirit by hiring these local experts.

For more information on guided hunting trips and wildlife adventures in Wyoming, explore the information below. To understand Wyoming’s diverse hunting experiences, check out groups like Hunting with Heroes and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers .

Welcome to Double T Outfitters

Come Hunt with Us

Double T Outfitters offers quality elk, mule deer, antelope, moose, black bear and antelope hunts. We offer archery hunts, bugle hunts in heavy rut with a rifle and migration hunts. We enjoy some of Wyoming's most game rich country, years of experience and the best guides in the area. We're a serious, hard working, alcohol free camp. So long as the hunter is willing, we hunt in any kind of weather. Some mornings start for the guides as early as 2:30 a.m. and will find us in the saddle hours before daylight just to catch a big bull in one of our favorite meadows or a large muley on a high peak drifting back to his bedding grounds. We take the load off our hunters in every way possible so they can focus all their energy on hunting. We believe we can offer you some of the finest guides, horses, food, camp and hunting that the outfitting industry has to offer.

Being a native son of Wyoming, I come from a heritage of love of the outdoors and the great sport of hunting. My grandfather was on outfitter for several years. He passed his skills and wisdom on to my dad, who then passed it on to me. From the time I could sit in a saddle I was riding along and hunting with my family. I've spent countless hours on horseback riding and enjoying the area. I take great pride in having the opportunity to offer my clients the same great hunting experiences I have been blessed with.

Licenses are acquired on a drawing basis. Wyoming recently started using a preference point system. We recommend that you purchase a preference point. Points are available to purchase July 1st thru October 31. Elk, deer and antelope can be applied for as a single hunter or as a party of up to six hunters. If applying as a party, if any one of the party draws a license, all are issued a license.  Wyoming has designed a system to help non-residents have incredibly high odds at drawing licenses. Ask us about it when you call. You may purchase preference points and apply for a license online at:

Wyoming Game and Fish

Elk applications have to be in by January 31st, Moose applications must be in by February 28th & Deer and Antelope applications must be in by March 15th.

No person born on or after January 1, 1966 may hunt in Wyoming without a hunter safety certificate. These can be acquired locally through your own state.

Archery and Rifle Info

Our archery hunts are for moose or elk. We have had tremendous success at bringing these bulls into the kill zone. We have professionally trained archery guides that really know how to get these  bulls up close and personal. Most of our bulls are taken between 20 and 30 yards. You can expect to encounter a lot of elk on this hunt. We do offer an

archery elk/rifle deer combination hunt that has become a favorite among hunters. Note: Cross bows are legal in Wyoming.

For elk and moose we suggest at least at .270. For the best all-round accuracy we recommend rifles sighted in 3 inches high at 100 yards.

Taxidermy and Processing

If you desire, we will deliver your meat to a processing plant. If you are traveling on a plane or long distance in a vehicle, to insure the safety and preservation of your cape we will take it to a local taxidermist who will flesh, salt and turn the ears. He charges $175 for this service. This amount should be deducted from your local taxidermist when you return home. If you don't have a taxidermist of your own, we can recommend one in our area.

Scenery and Fishing

This is some of the most beautiful country you'll ever lay eyes on. We've heard some of our hunters refer to this as "God's Country".

Bring your pole! After filling your big game tags you may wish to spend the rest  of your trip along the shores of the scenic Snake River. Fishing licenses are included with all elk licenses.

WELCOME OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS

hunting trip wyoming

Welcome to Mike Niles Outfitting where we specialize in quality hunting trips in Montana and Wyoming. Along with great hunting trips I also offer fly fishing trips on the blue-ribbon trout waters of the Missouri River in Montana.

Montana hunts are for either Whitetail or Mule deer and are managed to harvest an older class of buck. We are located in the northeast corner of Montana near the town of Fairview. With no shortage of deer on our properties, the chances of harvesting a quality deer are high.

Wyoming hunts offer some of the best antelope and mule deer hunting in the state. We are located in the area of New Castle, where the deer and antelope are plentiful. New Castle is on the west edge of the Black Hills and offers many tourist destinations such as Mount Rushmore, Deadwood, and Devils Tower along with many more attractions to see once you have your hunt. Non hunters in your group who want to explore have many options within easy driving distance of New Castle.

Angry People Travel From All Over Country To Voice Outrage Over Tortured Wolf

Lorraine Finazzo thought about using Zoom from her home in South Carolina to tell the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission her feelings about a wolf being captured, tortured and killed in Daniel. But felt she needed to make the trip instead.

April 17, 2024 6 min read

Wyoming Game and Fish Department Director Brian Nesvik and members of the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission listen on Wednesday as Lisa Robertson of Wyoming Untrapped speaks about the abuse and killing of a wolf in Daniel.

RIVERTON — Lorraine Finazzo initially thought about using Zoom from her home in South Carolina to tell the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission her feelings about the story that’s gone global of a wolf that was captured, abused and killed in Daniel, Wyoming.

But she decided that wouldn’t be good enough.

So, Finazzo traveled to Wyoming so she could speak in person in Riverton on Wednesday during a two-hour public comment session at the commission’s meeting.

Photos and videos of the wolf’s suffering prompted Finazzo and her husband to catch a flight to Denver, meet their daughter there and then drive to the meeting, she told Cowboy State Daily.

“Those pictures — I couldn’t sleep,” she said of photos showing the young wolf, one with its muzzle tightly taped shut, before it was killed.

Like many others who came in person or testified via Zoom, Finazzo was allowed 2 minutes to address the commission.

During her testimony, she said her family frequently visits Wyoming, but might not return unless the state changes its policies toward wolves.

“The incident (with the wolf) in Wyoming has given me nightmares,” she told the commission. “Unless there are changes in these laws, we cannot continue to support Wyoming tourism. The laws much change, the world is watching.”

People wait their turn to speak to the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission during the commission’s meeting Wednesday in Riverton.

‘Dozens And Dozens Of Conversations’

The commissioners and Wyoming Game and Fish Department Director Brian Nesvik listened patiently as one person after another spoke passionately about the Feb. 29 incident in Sublette County that so far has resulted in only a $250 for the alleged perpetrator, Cody Roberts, 42, of Daniel.

The commission took no action on the matter, and many of the reforms people called for would require action by the Wyoming Legislature.

After the comment session wrapped up, Nesvik remarked that he’d had “dozens and dozens” of conversations about the incident with people all over the state.

He added that he will continue discussions with Gov. Mark Gordon, members of the Wyoming Legislature and others about any possible next steps to address the incident.

Will Stop Hunting Because Of It

Wyoming native and seasoned hunter Jim Laybourn told Cowboy State Daily that images of the tormented wolf also deeply affected him.

“I can’t get those pictures out of my head,” he said.

During his testimony, Laybourn said he can’t “give another dime to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department” until there is reform in the state’s wildlife management laws, such as banning the practice of running predatory animals down with snowmobiles.

“Wyoming hunters will forever be associated with the likes of the wolf torturer in Daniel, and I refuse to be associated with that,” he told Nesvik and the commissioners.

He later reiterated his intent to stop buying hunting tags to Cowboy State Daily.

“I can’t,” he said. “I hope they do something soon, because I’m a real carnivore.”

According to accounts of events on Feb. 29, Roberts ran the wolf down with a snowmobile, captured it and then took it to his residence. He later allegedly took it to the Green River Bar in Daniel and showed it off, before taking it behind the bar and killing it.

Short video clips released by Game and Fish show the wolf languishing on the floor of the bar. Roberts is allegedly the man shown in another short clip obtained by Cowboy State Daily, lifting the animal’s head to kiss it while it defensively bares its teeth.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission meets in Riverton.

No More Use Of Vehicles?

Many others who testified criticized the practice of using snowmobiles or other vehicles to run down wildlife classified as predatory animals, such as wolves and coyotes.

University of Wyoming professor Donal O’Toole said he was shocked when a colleague told him about the practice.

“He told me about chasing coyotes with a snowmobile and running them over. I think we have a cultural problem,” he said.

Montana resident Dave Stalling, representing Hunters and Anglers for Wildlife Management Reform, said that while many hunters have condemned Roberts’ alleged actions as unethical, there is still a widespread “culture of hatred of wolves” among hunters.

“It’s an irrational hatred of wolves,” Stalling said. “They talk about ‘shoot, shovel and shut up.’ The way we manage wolves isn’t based on science. It’s based on fear, lies, misconception and hate.”

Mike Blissett of Cody, who owns Blissett Nature Photography, said he’s concerned about how worldwide outrage over the wolf’s abuse and death will affect his and other tourism-related small businesses.

“I sell more grizzly and wolf photographs than all other photographs combined,” he told the commission.

Others noted that the incident could ruin Wyoming’s reputation as a leader in wildlife management, and possibly even hamper current efforts to delist grizzly bears from federal protection in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

Pets Threatened

As the meeting closed, Nesvik said he appreciates how well the comment session had gone and how polite people were, despite the emotions involved.

That always hasn’t been the case since news of the incident in Daniel broke and went viral, Nesvik said. He said Game and Fish staff had been fielding constant calls and messages, some of them degrading and threatening.

“I have had my staff called names I will not repeat here. I have had people call and threaten my staff’s pets,” he said.

Commission President Richard Ladwig said he understood the outrage over what happened to the wolf, but added that he doesn’t understand why the April 7 stabbing death of 14-year-old Bobby Maher in Casper hasn’t generated similar outrage.

"I can’t believe there wasn’t more of an uproar over the 14-year-old who was stabbed to death in front of the Casper mall by other teenagers,” he said.
