A Complete Travel Guide to Visting Catalina Island

Visiting catalina island: a complete travel guide.

Santa Catalina Island, widely known as “Catalina”, is a charming island off the coast of Los Angeles, California. It is known for its rugged wildlife, laid-back resort vibe, outdoor activities, and the most majestic views of the Pacific Ocean. For Californians, it’s perfect for a weekend getaway and is very reminiscent of the Mediterranean (think a mini Amalfi Coast). There are two towns on this island that you can travel to – Avalon + Two Harbors – but I’ll get more into that later. Keep reading below for “A Complete Travel Guide to Visiting Catalina Island”

Catalina History

Catalina is steeped in history with settlers starting as far back as 7,000 years ago. The island was a happening place for pirates, smugglers, hunters, and even the army back in the day. It was then made a resort destination by The Banning Brothers in the early 1900s. Then in 1919, the Wrigley Gum Family purchased the island and invested millions of dollars to appeal to vacationers. They still own it to this day!

How to Get to Catalina Island

FERRYS TO CATALINA ISLAND

For the easiest way to get to Santa Catalina Island choose the Catalina Express or the Catalina Flyer. There are three different ports in Southern California to choose from: Dana Point, Long Beach, + San Pedro for the Catalina Express and the Catalina Flyer departs from Newport Beach. Each ticket costs $75 round trip and there are only a number of departure times (Long Beach has the most departure times) so make sure to book this first when you are planning your trip to Catalina. Do note, that at the Dana Point port parking is $14 a day and the boat ride takes 1 hour and 25 minutes from that port. I’d bet it’s similar pricing and travel times in the other two ports.

BY AIRPLANE

You could choose to fly into Avalon with IEX Helicopters . You can book a flight departing from Long Beach and the trip will only take you 15 minutes and cost roughly $300 round trip per person.

Catalina Weather

Catalina has a temperate marine climate most of the year but for the best time to visit, plan your trip for spring or fall. Summer is great since the water is very warm to swim in but the prices for accommodations will almost double during the months of June-September. For the best time to visit Catalina plan your trip from April-May or late September-October.

Best Things to Do on Catalina Island

While all opinions and recommendations are always my own, my content on this blog post may contain affiliate links for hotels I’ve traveled to, tours I’ve completed, and products I recommend. This means I get a small commission if you book a stay or purchase a product after clicking one of these links. As always, I am so thankful for your support and will continue to share the best properties, things to do, and items I love!

Descanso Beach Club

Our favorite part of the trip was renting lounge chairs and posting up at the beach club for the afternoon. I’ll say it again, this island reminded us very much of the Amalfi Coast, and spending the day at Descanso Beach Club solidified that. They have a full lunch and drink menu to choose from (get the tacos!). You’ll want to book your chairs or cabanas in advance as they can sell out during busy days. It costs $75 for a pair of chairs for the entire day. You can check out their website for more details.

Visit the Catalina Casino

The Catalina Casino is a stunning example of Art Deco architecture and a historic landmark. Built in 1929 by William Wrigley Jr. the casino was not used for gambling but rather for entertainment. It housed a grand ballroom, a movie theater, and a museum, making it a hub of social activity for residents and visitors alike.

The casino’s iconic round building and beautiful seaside location have made it a symbol of Catalina Island and a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into the island’s glamorous past. Today, the casino continues to host events and remains a beloved piece of Catalina Island’s history and culture. Finally, it costs $19 to enter and they still show movies to this day!

Day Trip to Two Harbors

Known as Catalina’s other side, you can either depart from San Pedro (the mainland) or take a day trip from Avalon via boat to get to Two Harbors (which takes 40 minutes). This side of the island is for the outdoor/adventure folk as it’s full of beautiful hiking trails, mountain biking trails, the best dive spots, and multiple campsites.

Rent Golf Carts + E-Bikes + Jetskis

GOLF CARTS: There are only a few rental places in Avalon for golf cart rentals and they all are roughly $50 an hour with a two-hour maximum. In reality, two hours is an ample amount of time to see all of Avalon. We were able to stop at the Botanical Garden, Chimes Tower Road, and Wrigley Road viewpoint (all amazing places for pictures) during our rental. We rented with “Cartopia” and highly recommend doing so! Finally, you can take a private golf cart tour of the island.

E-BIKES: The next day, we rented E-BIKES from Catalina E-Bikes which was another favorite part of the trip. Being that Catalina is SUPER hilly renting regular bikes would be unenjoyable in Avalon. You can rent them for the entire day or by the hour. We rented our e-bikes for 2.5 hours and it was the perfect amount of time to see all of Avalon twice and grab a bite to eat (cost $20 an hour per bike or $70 for the full day).

WATER ACTIVITIES: It’s an island so any water activity you want to do, they will have here! Everything from renting jet skis, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, parasailing, and more. Finally, this undersea excursion comes highly rated.

Visit the Botanical Garden

The Wrigley Memorial and botanical garden honor the memory of William Wrigley Jr. He was a crucial part of kick-starting tourism of Santa Catalina Island and when he passed, the Wrigley Memorial was constructed in his honor. The memorial is truly the centerpiece of the botanical garden and the most beautiful spot for photos (bring your wide-lens photographer friends). It costs $8 to enter and is open every day from 8 am to 5 pm.

FUN FACT: They sourced mostly all of the materials to build this memorial from Catalina alone.

Visit the Wrigley Mansions

Yes, you read that right there are not one but two Wrigley Mansions on Catalina Island. You can visit both of them while you rent your golf cart. I don’t believe there are any tours of the mansions you can just enjoy them from the outside!

There are over 165 miles of hiking trails on Catalina Island. The best part is there are hiking trails for every level of hiker. The big shebang hike is the “Trans-Catalina Trail” which spans around the entire island (38.5 miles to be exact). You will need hiking permits for most trails and can find out more information on hiking here.

Wildlife Expeditions + Ziplining

Did you know there is a rugged outback on Catalina filled with wildlife? Neither did I at first! One of the more popular excursions on the island is the bison expeditions and safari tours. For more information check out the tours here . Finally, there are a few places to zip line on the island. Check out Zip Line Eco Tour for the most popular spot.

For the Kids

Catalina Aerial Adventure : a fun obstacle course located near Descanso Beach Club. They have courses ranging from beginner to advanced and would be a great activity for adults and any kids over 7 years old!

Submarine Tour : This tour is great for kids. Embark on a 45-minute tour of the underwater world while learning all about the Pacific Ocean and sea life.

Catalina Island Hotels

Zane grey pueblo.

Situated on top of the hill in Avalon with the best views in town is Zane Grey Hotel. In the early 1900s, the then-famous author Zane Grey purchased this estate the 1920s and turned it into a hotel that is still operating to this day. The pool is heated year-round, the rooftop has sweeping views of Avalon, and there is a shuttle to and from the town of Avalon (since it’s on top of the hill) from 8 am-10 pm. We 100% would stay here again when visiting Catalina. Don our shuttle driver who has lived on the island since 1990 gave us all the insider information that I’ve included in this guide today. Book your stay here !

Hotel Atwater

Located directly in Avalon Town, this hotel is another great option if you want to be closer to restaurants and the beach. The interior has been remodeled recently and the balconies have great views of the city. Book your stay here !

Hotel Metropole: The Hotel Metropole was the first hotel in Catalina. Today it’s an affordable option in the heart of town located near many restaurants with views of the water. Book your stay here !

What to Pack for Catalina

  • Activewear since most things to do is outdoors. My favorite brands of activewear that have lasted me YEARS are  Lululemon  and  Athleta .
  • Good hiking shoes or sneakers: I wore my Nikes for when we did a lot of walking (lots of uphill).
  • A sturdy pair of flip-flops that you can also wear on a nice walk or to the beach. These  Olukai Sandals  are my go-to and have lasted me years and are the most comfortable.
  • Flowy Dresses: These come in handy when the temperatures are high in the spring/summer. My favorite white dress for photos is linked and this beachy dress is another great option!
  • A wide-brim sun hat: I love  this hat from Brixton I have it in multiple colors.
  • Bathing Suits: Being that Catalina gets very warm year round you’ll want to always be prepared by bringing bathing suits. I always find quality suits that last for a few seasons at  Summersalt and  Cupshe .
  • Sunscreen: This  GOOP FACE SUNSCREEN BRUSH  is perfect for traveling because it adds SPF to your face all while not messing up your makeup.Shorts:
  • Abercrombie has the best shorts for all sizes and shapes. Check out my favorite curve love shorts . I also love my Levi cut-offs they’re so classic and never go out of style.
  • Basics: I always find the best basics on Amazon Basics .

Best Restaurants in Catalina

Bluewater Avalon ($$): Our favorite restaurant in Avalon, this place is located right on the water with the most amazing views and delicious seafood (we got the burger and it was great!) During peak times it’s best to make a reservation as it gets busy.

Topside ($$): Opened in July of 2023, this new rooftop restaurant has some of the best views in Catalina. Serving up classic American fare with reasonable prices, this spot is a must-visit!

Steve’s Steakhouse & Seafood ($$$): For an upscale dinner, choose this restaurant located in Avalon on the main strip. It comes highly rated by the locals!

The Naughty Fox ($$): Delicious cocktails and small bites to eat. We had the hummus plate while overlooking the water and the vibes were immaculate.

Descanso Beach Club ($$): If you are not renting chairs at the beach club you can still experience Descanso and grab lunch here! The restaurant is located right on the beach and is handicap-accessible.

The Lobster Trap ($$): Casual seafood restaurant located in Avalon that the locals love!

Casual Dining

Cafe Metropole ($$): A casual juice bar with healthy salads and sandwiches. Sadly this is the only healthy-ish option in all of Avalon and is only open until 5 pm. With that being said, the salads were delicious. Get the BBQ Chicken Salad!

Hotel Atwater Coffee Shop ($$): located within the hotel, this coffee shop serves breakfast burritos, smoothies, pastries, and more. We had the breakfast burrito and chocolate croissant and both were tasty.

Original Antonio’s Pizzeria ($): Don’t make the mistake and eating at Antonio’s on the water. This is the original Antonio’s pizza spot and is pretty good. It’s great for families and is super casual but don’t expect NY pizza quality, ya know?

Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co ($$): Being that there is no Starbucks on the island (blasphemy, I know) the lattes and breakfast options at this spot were great! We had the breakfast burrito twice and highly recommend it.

Lloyd’s Ice Cream ($): Located on the main strip in Avalon this place is great for ice cream and all the candy options.

I think trying to add all of these in one day would be tight but it is definitely doable if you plan to take the first ferry out and the last ferry back. Let me know if you have any other questions! XO Courtney

Hi! I would say in all destinations weekdays are typically less expensive. It all depends on the time of year if it’s high season or not.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip: How to Spend One Day

The perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

Published on: July 17, 2023

Your perfect Catalina Island day trip itinerary, including how to get there, what to see, and where to eat.

Catalina Island boasts 75 square miles of hilly terrain, beautiful beaches, kelp forests, and one of California’s most popular multi-day treks – the 38.5-mile Trans-Catalina Trail.

The island also happens to be one of the best day trips to do in Southern California since it’s only 22 miles off the coast and only about an hour by ferry from Los Angeles and Orange County.

It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I finally made the trip to Santa Catalina Island myself. It had always been on my radar, as many of the islands off the coast of California have been for years, but I just never made it happen.

That is until I found myself with an extra day after a trip to Disneyland . I quickly decided to finally experience Catalina Island once I realized how easy it was to get to the island.

Based on that trip, this is my full itinerary for the perfect Catalina Island day trip for anyone who is also looking for a unique and easy day trip.

By the end of it, you’ll know exactly what to expect with a day trip to Catalina Island, how to get there, and what to do to soak up the best that this island has to offer.

How to Get to Catalina Island

Unless you know someone who has a sailboat or helicopter, the easiest way to get to Catalina Island is by ferry. There are two boat companies that take passengers to the island – Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer .

The vast majority of people visiting the island will take the high-speed ferry with Catalina Express since it leaves from more locations, including San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point and travels to both Avalon and Two Harbors.

The Catalina Flyer, on the other hand, only leaves from Newport Beach.

how to get to catalina island

Here are the options for doing a trip to Catalina Island from the mainland.

From Los Angeles

Long Beach is the most popular and active port for traveling to Catalina by ferry. The ferries that leave from the Long Beach Port take about an hour and only travel to Avalon.

During the off-season, there are only two departures and returns per day. This is when I went so I just had to be mindful of ferry times to make sure I didn’t miss the only late afternoon ferry back to the island.

You also have to squeeze in a bit more if you’re trying to do a day trip during the off-season since the earliest ferry leaves around 7:00 am from Long Beach and starts its return from Avalon at 4:15 pm.

During the summer, you’ll find up to 6-9 departures and returns per day so you can be more flexible with your day trip to Catalina Island. Shoulder seasons can fluctuate so you’ll need to check the ferry schedules ahead of time before planning your trip.

Get your FREE Los Angeles Mini Guide + a printable checklist with 100+ things to do in the city!

San Pedro has fewer departures and returns but it’s also the only port with ferries that go to Two Harbors as well as Avalon. And similar to the Long Beach Port, the number of ferries leaving and returning per day depends on the time of year.

In the off-season, it’s usually only a couple of departures and returns per day and that goes up to around 5-6 to Avalon and 7-9 to Two Harbors in the high season.

The ferry from San Pedro to Avalon takes about an hour and 15 minutes and the ferry from San Pedro to Two Harbors takes about two hours.

Book the Catalina Express from Long Beach or San Pedro here .

From Orange County

If you’re coming from Orange County or San Diego, you’ll probably want to leave from Dana Point. The ferries from Dana Point travel to Avalon and there are only a couple of departures and returns year-round.

The ferry from Dana Point takes about an hour and a half one way to get to Catalina Island.

Newport Beach

The ferry that leaves from Newport Beach is run by the Catalina Flyer instead of the Catalina Express. There is only one departure and return per day from this port and it only travels to Avalon. The journey takes just over an hour.

How Much Does the Catalina Ferry Cost?

Round trip tickets for the Catalina Express are $74.50 for adults, $67.50 for seniors 55+, and $59 for children under 12. You can book them here .

Round trip tickets for the Catalina Flyer are $70 for adults, $65 for seniors 60+, and $53 for children 12 and under.

Visiting Avalon vs Two Harbors

To keep things simple, I put together this Catalina day trip itinerary based on starting your day in Avalon. There are a few reasons for this.

First off, most of the ferries that travel to Catalina Island only go to Avalon and back (with the exception of the San Pedro ferries), so you have a lot more choices if you’re doing a day trip to Avalon.

Secondly, there’s a lot more to do in and around downtown Avalon compared to the more remote Two Harbors. So if you only have a day, Avalon is the better option for more things to do.

And lastly, it’s quicker to get to Avalon. Avalon takes anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half to get to depending on which port you’re leaving from, whereas Two Harbors takes two hours to travel to.

If you only have a day, you’ll want as much time as possible on the island so I recommend sticking to Avalon.

walking around the city of avalon

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip Itinerary: 6 Things to do on Catalina Island

Walk around town & shop the local boutiques.

Estimated Time: 30 min – 1 hour

plan a trip to catalina island - what to do

When you first arrive in the city of Avalon, I’d recommend spending some time getting acquainted with the cute downtown area and exploring the local boutiques.

Also, if you plan to do an afternoon tour but haven’t already booked one ahead of time, the dock area is where you should do that once you arrive.

Stop by the Catalina Island Coffee & Cookie Co for a fresh cup of coffee and maybe a bite to eat if you haven’t had breakfast yet. I’d highly recommend trying one of their delicious cinnamon rolls (if there are any left).

Then simply walk around the small area that makes up downtown Avalon. Poke your head into shops and find some souvenirs that you might want to pick up later before you hop on the ferry back to the mainland.

If you’re a photographer, this is also a great time to get some initial shots of Catalina Island and its scenic harbor with its famous casino in the background.

Check Out the Best Viewpoints & Go for a Short Hike

Estimated time: 2-3 hours

rent a golf cart and take in the viewpoints

Once you’re caffeinated, it’s time to explore the island by foot and golf cart.

There are hardly any cars on Catalina Island, except for those that belong to the few thousand people who actually live on the island. This means most visitors get around the island by golf cart.

You’ll find rentals near the dock area by the hour. I’d recommend going with Catalina Golf Cart Rentals .

They also have a map for a 12-mile scenic route that takes about an hour to complete which is a good place to start if it’s your first time on the island.

Note: For rentals, you have to be at least 21 years old and provide a valid driver’s license. Renting a golf cart from Catalina Golf Cart Rentals also requires a $50 deposit and it’s cash-only but there’s a nearby ATM.

Rentals run at about $50/hour and there’s usually a deal where if you buy two hours you’ll get the third hour free.

Once you have your rental sorted, make sure to include these stops while exploring the island:

  • Buena Vista Point
  • Lover’s Cove Scenic Vista
  • 3 Palms Scenic Overlook (this one is probably my favorite view on Catalina Island)
  • Ocean Scenic Overlook
  • Wrigley Botanical Garden

short hikes on catalina island

And if you’re up for a short hike, head up to the Catalina Island Conservancy near the Wrigley Botanical Garden and tackle one of these hikes:

  • Garden to Sky Trail (2.8 miles)
  • Trans-Catalina Trail to Lone Tree Viewpoint (3 miles)
  • Hermit Gulch Trail (3.4 miles)

Hit the Water

Estimated Time: 2 hours

water activities on catalina island

You can’t visit Catalina Island and not do at least one water activity while you’re in town.

The surrounding waters around the island are full of diverse marine life, kelp forests, and clear waters that are some of the warmest in Southern California.

It’s no surprise then that it’s a great spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, or exploring the water through a boat ride, kayaking , or standup paddleboarding.

Here are a few activities to choose from:

  • Snorkeling – You can either do a guided tour if you’re not familiar with snorkeling or simply rent a snorkel and go by yourself. A few of the best spots for snorkeling near Avalon include Casino Point Dive Park/Avalon Dive Park (there are snorkel rentals near the park) and Lover’s Cove (a more secluded spot so you should pick up snorkels in Avalon before heading here). If you want to do a tour, I’d recommend going with Snorkeling Catalina .

snorkeling on catalina island - lover's cove

  • Scuba diving – You can book a scuba tour with Catalina Scuba (they offer tours for both certified divers and those without any experience).
  • Kayaking or SUPing – If you prefer to explore above the water, renting a kayak or standup paddleboard (or going on a tour) is an ideal option. Since the water is usually very clear around the shores of Catalina, you can still see a lot from above the water. You can find kayak or SUP rentals from Wet Spot Rentals (they also have snorkel rentals) or Descanso Beach Ocean Sports offers tours and rentals.
  • Dolphin & whale watching – If you’re not a fan of getting wet but still want to experience the marine life around Catalina Island, you can go on a two-hour dolphin and whale watching tour with Catalina Diver Supply .
  • Jet skiing – If you’re just looking for a bit of fun out on the water, you can rent jet skis from Catalina Jet Ski .
  • Parasailing – If you’re looking for a thrilling water activity, one of the best ways to see the beauty of Catalina Island is from above. California Parasail offers 800-foot flights for 1, 2, and 3 people.

Note: Another very popular water activity on Catalina is the island’s semi-submersible submarine and glass-bottom boat tours. However, many of these tours feed fish to get them to swim close to the boat. These regular feedings can actually be detrimental to the local fish population as it teaches them to not search for their own food. I personally don’t recommend any tour that interacts with wildlife in a way that negatively changes their natural behavior, which is why I don’t recommend these activities if you’re going to Catalina Island. And, in general, I find these tours to be overly touristy and not the best way to experience the local sea life in its natural habitat.

Relax on the Beach

Estimated time: 1-2 hours

relax on the beach - middle beach on Santa Catalina

Even though there are a lot of adventure activities you can do, it’s good to give yourself at least an hour or two to just relax on Catalina island’s beautiful beaches as well.

One of the best places to go where you can also grab a cocktail to sip out on the beach is Descanso Beach Club .

Located just past the casino, this private beach costs $2 for beach access but is the nicest beach within walking distance to downtown Avalon.

You can also rent private cabanas at Descanso if you’re with a group or choose to simply enjoy the sand with a beach towel. It’s the perfect place to relax and grab a drink or bite to eat in the off-season or during the week.

During the high season, it turns into a party beach with rotating DJs on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, so don’t expect a peaceful beach setting if you’re visiting the island on a summer weekend.

You can also rent kayaks , standup paddleboards, and sign up for the zip lining tour , rope course , and rock climbing wall at Descanso Beach if you want to fit multiple activities into one area.

If you’re not a fan of paying for beach access, you can also lay out on the small beach near the ferry dock, called Middle Beach (although it doesn’t have quite the same ambiance).

Eat Fresh Lobster Rolls

Estimated time: 45 minutes – 1 hour

grab some fresh seafood before you head back on the Catalina Express

Santa Catalina Island isn’t exactly known for its foodie scene, but it’s still surrounded by the ocean so if you’re a fan of seafood you should make time to grab some delicious lobster rolls before you get back on the ferry.

I went to the Lobster Trap while I was in town and although the service could’ve been friendlier, their lobster rolls were a great way to end my time on Catalina Island before making my way back to the mainland.

Optional Addition: Go on a Local Tour

Estimated Time: 1-3 hours

tours on catalina island

If you get through everything on this Catalina Island itinerary, you probably won’t have time to do a guided tour on the island as well.

However, if you choose to extend your time or want to switch out one of the above activities with a tour, there are plenty of options on the island. Here are some of the best tours on Catalina Island:

  • Catalina Casino Tour – One of the most popular tours on Catalina Island is a walking tour through the historic art deco casino. There are two tours you can take: Discover the Casino Tour and Catalina Casino Behind the Scenes Tour . The 45-minute Discover the Casino Tour is the perfect intro to the history of the Casino and it allows you to tour the main highlights, including Avalon Theatre. The 90-minute Behind the Scenes Tour goes into more detail and focuses on areas of the casino that were once closed to the public for over 70 years.
  • Jeep Tours – If you’re looking to explore more of the island than what your golf cart can handle, I’d recommend hopping on a two-hour jeep tour. This eco-friendly tour with Catalina Island Company gives you a good overview of the local wildlife around the island and even some bison spotting.
  • Zip Lining Tour – As mentioned above, there’s a zip lining tour you can sign up for at Descanso Beach. If you’re looking for some thrills, this is an easy experience to fit into your time at the beach if you have a couple of hours to spare. On the tour, you’re taken 600 feet above the beach where you’ll fly across the canyon and through some eucalyptus trees at around 35 MPH. Along the zip line course, you’ll enjoy some scenic ocean views and learn more about the flora and fauna that can be found on Catalina Island. And, if you’re looking for more activities, there’s also a rock climbing wall and ropes course at Descanso Beach.
  • Ghost Tours – If you’re staying overnight, looking for a quirky tour, and you enjoy ghost stories, doing a Haunted Catalina ghost tour can be a fun way to spend an hour. Tours start at 7 pm nightly from the base of the Green Pier in downtown Avalon.

Quick History of Catalina Island

Santa Catalina Island’s history goes back to 8,000 years when Indigenous people from the Gabrieliño/Tongva tribe first inhabited the island.

Over the years, it’s been visited by smugglers, pirates, the Union army, missionaries, celebrities, and, of course, travelers.

For a good chunk of the 19th century, the island was owned by James Lick, a real estate investor and at one point the wealthiest man in California.

He eventually sold the island to the Banning Brothers, who started the Santa Catalina Island Company in the 1890s and turned the island into the resort destination it is today.

In the early 1900s, William Wrigley Jr., who had a controlling interest in the Santa Catalina Island Company, started developing the island even more into a resort destination.

He was the one who built the Catalina Casino and he even made Avalon the Spring Training home for the Chicago Cubs until 1951. His descendants still own most of the Santa Catalina Island Company today.

For a short stint during World War II, the island closed down to the public so it could be used as a military training facility. After the war, tourism picked up again and it became a popular vacation spot for celebrities, especially from the 1930s to 1950s.

Catalina Island was and still is a popular place to shoot movies (over 500 films, tv shows, and commercials have been shot in the area).

Best Time to Visit Catalina Island

The best time of year to explore Catalina Island is spring and fall. You’ll find the best weather during this time of the year and slightly fewer crowds than you will in summer.

Summer can be a good time to visit as well, but the weather is often overcast in the mornings with the sun not breaking through until the afternoon.

Winter is the worst time to visit with choppy waters that make water activities hard to do and the ferry ride to and from the island unpleasant.

However, if you’re looking for fewer crowds and care more about land activities, winter can be a good alternative to the busier months.

Just note that winter brings reduced ferry times so there’s less wiggle room for a day trip (although it’s still very much possible).

Tips for Visiting Catalina Island

  • Catalina Island isn’t the cheapest – As you can probably tell with the ferry price alone, a visit to Catalina Island isn’t always the cheapest. Transportation (including the ferry and golf cart rentals), food, and accommodation (if you’re planning a weekend trip), all come at a premium price. Make sure to budget accordingly and know that you’ll probably have to spend at least $200-$300 for a day trip to Catalina.
  • Keep track of ferry times – This is especially the case if you’re visiting in the low season when there are only 1-2 departures and returns per day. Make sure you’re keeping track of the time and that you can actually fit everything in without needing to rush back to the ferry if you’re only doing a day trip.
  • Pack water shoes – If you plan to do water activities, don’t forget a pair of water shoes. Although there are some soft sandy beaches, a lot of the shoreline around Catalina Island can be rocky and uncomfortable to walk around with bare feet.
  • Try a Buffalo Milk cocktail – You can’t make a visit to Catalina Island without trying its signature drink! This creamy cocktail is made with vodka, Kahlua, Creme de Cocoa, Cream de Banana, and half and half. You should be able to find it at any bar on Catalina Island, but a good place to start is either Descanso Beach Club or Luau Larry’s. It’s basically like ice cream in cocktail form.

A Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip – the Complete Guide

Catalina Island day trip - a complete guide

Are you planning a day trip to Catalina Island? Then continue reading! I’ll share everything you need to know to create your perfect Catalina Island day trip .

Santa Catalina Island, which is generally referred to simply as Catalina Island, is located about 30 miles off the coast of California’s mainland. It is one of California’s most underrated, hidden gems.

With a population of just over 4200 people and around 22 miles (35 km) in length, this tiny Californian island makes for an amazing, fun-filled day trip.

On one of my most recent excursions to Mexico , I got the chance to stop in Catalina Island and was blown away by its breathtaking beauty, which quickly turned Catalina into one of my all-time favorite travel destinations.

In this guide, I will go over all of the best insider tips on how to have a successful Catalina Island day trip.

And now, without further ado, here is my ultimate guide to the perfect day trip to Catalina Island.

How to Get to Catalina Island

There are two different options to choose from to get from the mainland to Catalina Island: by sea or by air.

The most common way to get to Catalina Island for the day is by taking a ferry. There are 4 different ports to travel out of; San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach, or Dana Point. The ferry rides are operated by two companies: Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer and take about an hour.

The next option will have you in Catalina in just about 15 minutes and that is by helicopter with IEX Helicopters. You can catch a helicopter ride from San Pedro, Long Beach, John Wayne Airport, and Burbank Airport.

While the ferry usually costs about $80 for a round trip (discounts available for seniors and children), it is by far the most cost-effective way for your Catalina Island day trip. A helicopter ride starts at $179 per person for a one-way flight.

Tip: Catalina Island makes a perfect day trip from both Los Angeles and San Diego

Things to Do During Your Catalina Island Day Trip

While the idea of spending only a day in such a beautiful place like Catalina might not sound like a long time, the good thing is that it is actually the perfect amount of time to explore the famous, yet small island .

Here are all the must-do’s for your day trip to Catalina Island.

1. Rent a Golf Cart

Whatever you do, one does not visit Catalina Island without renting a golf cart and driving around the island to take in all the beautiful views that the island offers.

In downtown Catalina, you’ll find several golf cart rental companies that will let you rent carts by the hour. Along with a golf cart, you will be given a map of the island and sent on your way to let your wanderlust run wild.

We rented our golf cart for 2 hours, but 1 hour ended up being more than enough time to drive around and discover the island.

Tip: if you really want to see all the best places on the island then this private golf cart tour is a great option.

2. Walk Around Downtown

Exploring downtown on a day trip to Catalina Island

Avalon is the main town on Catalina Island, and that is where you find downtown Catalina.

Filled with delicious restaurants, shopping boutiques, and some fun nightlife, downtown Catalina is the perfect way to unwind and spend your day.

Whether you’re in a shopping mood or would like to enjoy a seaside cocktail, this quaint neighborhood is the perfect place to hang out and relax.

While you can easily get through all of downtown within 30 minutes, it’s perfect because it leaves time for the rest of the activities you can do during your Catalina Island day trip.

3. Go Snorkeling

things to do on a one day trip to Catalina Island

If there is an activity that I can’t recommend enough it’s to go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the island. With an abundance of different snorkeling locations, there is absolutely no better way to spend your day in Catalina.

Snorkeling is one of my favorite activities in the world, so it’s needless to say that whenever I am anywhere near water, I try to fit some snorkel time into my itinerary.

While I have been snorkeling more times than I can count, in more places than I can count, Catalina blew me away with its out-of-this-world snorkeling spots . With hundreds of fish swimming around you, this is the perfect activity for your day in Catalina.

4. Take an Underwater Cruise

Looking to catch a glimpse of the underwater life but don’t want to get wet? there is this cool semi-submarine called Nautilus .

They offer trips that last 45 minutes and take you to a marine sanctuary to see the fish from your own porthole. Especially if you are visiting Catalina Island with kids, this is a great activity!

You’ll be taken through Lover’s Cove, a State Marine Conservation Area sanctuary where you’ll see amazing undersea gardens and ocean habitats in a semi-submersible vessel designed after America’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus.

5. Zipline Across the Island

What better way to view Catalina than from 300 feet above the ground ?

While this activity might not be for the weak-hearted, it is definitely worth it and probably one of the most exhilarating things to do in Catalina Island.

Catch views like no other, all while getting a good adrenaline rush by zip-lining through the island. There truly is not a more liberating feeling than traveling through the air at high speeds while basking in the beauty that Catalina offers.

Tip: if this zipline sounds a bit too much for you, check out this activity . It gets you to climb bridges, ladders, and other challenging obstacles suspended in a grove of towering eucalyptus. Great to do with kids as well!

6. Lay Out on the Beach

One day in Catalina Island - enjoy the beach

If you’re looking to just take it easy during your Catalina Island day trip, there is nothing wrong with just grabbing a cocktail, laying out on the beach, and enjoying the sunshine.

And to be quite honest, you can never go wrong with a beach day. The main beach at Catalina is breathtaking and it’s the perfect way to unwind during your vacation.

7. Kayak Through the Waters of the Island

Another famous activity in Catalina is kayaking. Rent a kayak for a few hours and go out into the water for a fun day at sea.

Kayaking is the perfect way to explore the beauty of the island as you get to spend time with the hundreds of fish that will be swimming around you. And with crystal clear waters, it will be easy to spot all the different types of fish in the waters of the island.

Tip: Looking for more of an adrenaline rush? There’s a parasailing company in Avalon as well. So instead of admiring Catalina’s beautiful coastline from a kayak, you could also do so from the air!

8. Enjoy the Good Food

Santa Catalina Island is known for its good seafood restaurants. The Lobster Trap is a favorite, but there are many options around Avalon.

Stop by Catalina Coffee & Cookie for a cup of coffee and a delicious sweet treat (including vegan options).

If you’re looking for the best homemade ice cream, go to Scoops.

And check out Descanso Beach Club if you want to enjoy a cocktail and some food by the beach.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

Go to Catalina Island in the fall. It will be warm, the air is crystal clear, and the water is as warm as it gets in SoCal.

Very informative and interesting Thank you

Hi William, Even though it’s getting a bit cooler, I’d still say Catalina Island makes a perfect day trip. And it will be a lot less crowded than in summer! Otherwise a visit to Temecula for some wine tasting is great. Or a day trip to San Diego.

Perfect Catalina Island Weekend Trip Itinerary (One of Our FAVORITE Places!)

weekend getaway to Catalina Island in California a couple looks at the ocean with the Casino in the background

Looking for the perfect Southern California paradise? How about taking a Catalina Island weekend trip where you can enjoy an idyllic island escape just miles off the Southern California coastline at one of our favorite places in the US – Catalina Island!

It’s no secret we are fans of the island, we have done several day trips to Catalina Island as well as spent several overnights stays exploring all the best things to do in Catalina that make this a destination we love coming back to over and over again. And while doing a day trip to Catalina Island is possible and great for those who are short on time or looking for easy day trips from Los Angeles or Orange County, the best way to spend time exploring the best of the island is by spending a weekend in Catalina.

For the purposes of this guide, we are going to focus on Avalon, the charming 1 square mile town that feels like it’s stuck back in the golden age of Hollywood as this was a haven for some of the biggest stars and where they would come to spend their free time 22 miles off the coast of California.

What’s great about this Catalina Island weekend trip itinerary is that it’s easy to customize and move things around to fit the schedule you want to enjoy during your getaway. Just keep in mind that many of these activities will require advance reservations, especially in the popular summer months so be sure to plan ahead!

Brief History and Facts about Catalina Island

Before diving into our Catalina Island weekend trip itinerary and guide, it’s fun to learn a little about some of the interesting facts that make this destination so unique and special (and for the history buffs, this is one of the many reasons you should visit the Catalina Island Museum to learn more about the famous people and happenings that took place here during your weekend in Catalina).

Marilyn Monroe was discovered by a photographer when she was working as a taffy puller at the candy shop downtown Avalon known as Lloyd’s of Avalon Confectionary when she was still Norma Jeane at the age of 16.

The Wrigley Family, the American chewing gum industrialists and owners of the Chicago Cubs baseball team bought Catalina Island in 1919. They brought the Chicago Cubs here for spring training, which also brought Ronald Reagan here as he was an announcer for the Cubs. The Wrigley family still helps preserve the island and has put in place protections to prevent over development.

Winston Churchill caught a record-breaking marlin on his visit to Catalina Island in 1929.

Catalina Island is also the location in the center of the mysterious death of actress Natalie Wood who died while aboard her husband Robert Wagner’s yacht. The only other people on board the yacht during her death were actor Christopher Walken and the captain of the boat in 1981.

The casino on the island, which was never actually a gambling hall and never will be, means ‘gathering place’ in Italian and that’s exactly what it was on the island with a movie theater featuring the first motion picture with sound known as a ‘talkie’.

How to Get to Catalina Island

Catalina ferry coming into Catalina Island with the snowy mountains in the backdrop

To enjoy our weekend getaway to Catalina we used the Catalina Express ferry service which operates out of Dana Point, Long Beach, and San Pedro to Avalon, where we will be basing our entire itinerary to a weekend in Catalina around.

The ferry terminals have several departures daily to Avalon as well as return trips to Dana Point , Long Island, and San Pedro daily. The times and schedule depend on the season so it’s best to check their website for the desired time of your visit to plan your ferry tickets.

Keep in mind you will want to purchase your ferry tickets in advance, especially around the summer season as this is the most popular time and high season to visit the island.

The ferry journey to Catalina Island take around 60-90 minutes depending on what your departure location is.

For a great weekend trip to Catalina Island, we recommend buying tickets for the earliest ferry and taking the last ferry back. You also need to arrive to the ferry at least 30 minutes before departure going both ways.

No cars are allowed on Catalina Island, there are paid parking lots at the mainland ferry terminals for you to leave your car.

How to Spend a Weekend in Catalina

So now that we’ve covered how to get you to and from the mainland to Avalon on your Catalina Island weekend trip we need to cover all the fun activities you can fill your time with! Also, if you need some inspiration, check out some of our favorite photos of Catalina to get inspiration before your weekend trip.

Day 1: Weekend in Catalina

Drone View of Catalina

On your first day during your weekend trip to Catalina Island you will most likely be arriving late morning or around lunchtime from your ferry over to the mainland.

Be sure to come hungry as there are several amazing places to eat on the island which is what we suggest you start your trip with after dropping off your luggage at your hotel. Chances are, your hotel room might not be ready yet. So from the ferry, take your luggage to the front desk and get ready to start exploring starting with lunch and filling your first afternoon with some fun activities.

Descanso Beach Club

Megan enjoying a drink at Descanso Beach in Catalina Island California

A Catalina Island weekend getaway isn’t complete without visiting Descanso Beach Club. This is where you can find the best beach in Avalon serviced by the Descanso Beach Club where you can enjoy a delicious, fresh lunch and refreshing cocktails along the waterfront on the far end of Avalon past the Casino.

On our way, enjoy breathtaking views of the island and the Pacific Ocean passing the Casino, Tuna Club, and Catalina Island Yacht Club. After you pass the Casino, you’ll walk along the waterfront on a beautiful palm tree-lined path to Descanso Beach Club.

Enjoy lunch on the patio overlooking the beach watching the gentle waves roll onto the shores. During the summer season, you can also rent cabanas or chaise lounges with umbrellas for shade to enjoy your drinks and lunch at. If you want to do this, you’ll want to secure a reservation in advance.

On a gorgeous day, like the one we had, it’s easy to spend a few hours here just relaxing, sipping on drinks, and enjoying the view until your room is ready, heck, you might even want to come back again during your weekend in Catalina because it’s that beautiful and relaxing over here.

Zipline Eco Tour

Scott-soaring-high-above-Catalina-Island-in-California-on-the-zipline-eco-tour

If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping adventure with incredible views on your Catalina Island weekend trip, then you will want to book the sky-high soaring adventure at the Zipline Eco Tour in the Descanso Canyon located right by Descanso Beach Club.

Soar through the sky with jaw-dropping views of the ocean on this 2-hour ziplining course starting at Descanso Beach Club where a shuttle takes you 600 feet up to the top of your course before zipping by at 35 miles per hour towards the ocean!

You’ll need to wear closed-toe shoes and wear full clothing (not bathing suits) to enjoy this activity during your weekend in Catalina. Also, if you’re hitting up Descanso Beach Club before for lunch, skip the alcohol until after your zipline tour. You end right at Descanso Beach Club so you can enjoy a post-zipline adult beverage then!

Rent A Golf Cart

Megan and Scott enjoying a scenic golf cart ride on Catalina Island in California

Another fun option for your Catalina Island weekend trip is to rent a golf cart for an hour or two to explore the island. Catalina Golf Cart Rentals (625 Crescent Ave) offers 4 passenger and 6 passenger golf cart rentals for 1 and 2 hours at a time.

Golf carts are the cars of the island, seriously you won’t see many actual cars on the island but everyone drives golf carts!

This is an excellent option for getting some incredible views of the island and taking the scenic route past places like Mt. Ada, the Wrigley Memorial Botanical Garden, Chimes Tower, and Descanso Beach to name a few plus a map of the island of where you are and not allowed to drive.

It’s strongly advised to book your golf cart rental in advance as during peak summer season, this book up quickly! Also, if this is a great way to get to Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden since they are a bit inland (which is walkable but it will take longer). If you plan on seeing the Botanical Garden via golf cart, which is an excellent option, be sure to book a 2-hour rental, the entire scenic loop will almost take up the full 1-hour rental with minimal stops for photos.

Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens

Wrigley Botanical Gardens on Catalina Island in California

While cruising on your golf cart during your Catalina Island weekend trip, be sure to stop at the gorgeous Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden located 1.5 miles up Avalon Canyon Road inland.

The inland Catalina Island Conservancy and botanical garden and memorial to William Wrigley Jr and is absolutely beautiful full of endemic plants and rare endangered flora and fauna as well as beautiful Spanish tile and architecture, not to mention a beautiful view from the top of the memorial with views of the ocean.

Admission to the botanical gardens is between $8-12.

Keep in mind that the Botanical Garden is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. If your time is running short on the first day of your weekend in Catalina you can always swap this activity out for something else on another day. As mentioned, you can totally walk here too but you will need to plan comfortable walking shoes as the walk will be 3 miles round trip.

If you do plan on walking in the summer, make sure to have sunscreen and a hat or something to shade you, this walk can get hot! We know from experience!

Dinner at Maggie’s Blue Rose

As you wind down from your first, very eventful day on your Catalina weekend getaway you will probably have built up an appetite. There are SO many incredible dining options and since we’ve been on the island at least a dozen times we feel confident with our food recommendations.

One place we never skip eating at when visiting Catalina Island is Maggie’s Blue Rose Mexican eatery. Everything we’ve tried here has been insanely delicious including their famous margaritas.

If you love sharable plates, our favorite thing to order is the carnitas nachos which are huge and big enough for two to split as an entire meal served with freshly made tortilla chips and layered with toppings paired with their homemade salsa.

Evening Activities

sunset view of the Casino and Catalina Harbor on Catalina Island in California

Even for a small island getaway, you can find some fun nightlife and evening activities for all ages during your Catalina Island weekend trip.

For families and adults who are kids at heart, head to Three Palms Avalon Arcade at the Metropole Marketplace which has a bar and an arcade full of fun video games where you can win tickets to cash in for fun prizes along with a mini-bowling alley. The arcade is open daily until 8:00 pm.

If you’re looking for more fun, check out the Catalina Island Ghost Tours which take place on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in the evenings to learn a bit more about the paranormal activity (and even alien activity) on the island!

Last but not least, for the adults, there are a few bars on the island and restaurants with full bars to enjoy a nightcap at. Some of the best bars to hit up in the evening include the Marlin Club, Luau Larry’s, and J L’s Locker Room .

Day 2: Weekend in Catalina

view of downtown avalon from the pleasure pier in avalon on Catalina Island California

This will be your full day of fun and activities during your Catalina Island weekend getaway! Keep in mind that some activities, especially in the summer months will require advance reservations. You may have to slightly alter or tweak some of the suggested activities to fit your reservations which is really easy to do because things are not far away from one another, It’s very easy to adjust all of our recommendations to fit your weekend in Catalina.

Morning Coffee & Breakfast

Fuel all the fun during your full-day during your weekend in Catalina at the Catalina Island Coffee & Cookie Co. located in the Metropole Market Place which opens at the wee hours of the morning. We both love a good cup of coffee and they deliver quality cups of coffee – especially if you like iced chai tea lattes!

You can find small bites and baked goods as well as a few breakfast options.

If you’re not a coffee drinker you’re also in luck as they have delicious flavored iced teas you can try too!

Hike to Buena Vista Point Scenic Overlook

View of Catalina Harbor from the Buena Vista Scenic Overlook off Wrigley Drive in Avalon Catalina

After you’ve enjoyed your early breakfast, if you’re looking for a nice morning workout with a rewarding view of Avalon, Catalina Harbor, and the Casino from above, then check out Buena Vista Point Scenic Overlook.

Take Wrigley Road for a 25-minute uphill climb to this scenic vista. This is best done in the morning, especially in the summer because of the heat. There are a few places to take a rest along the way including the shaded local pet cemetery before continuing your incline.

One of our favorite views of Catalina can be found here and is a great photo stop.

If you’re not wanting to hike up here, you can rent e-bikes from Brown’s Bikes or stop on your golf cart rental the day before!

Catalina Museum for Art & History

Historic-photo-of-a-photo-in-the-Catalina-Museum-of-Art-and-History-in-California

If you’re like us and fascinated with the island’s history then you’ll want to include the Catalina Island Museum for Art & History to your Catalina Island weekend trip itinerary!

Open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, you can explore this beautiful space takes you through the history of the island including historic photos, ephemera, and stories from when the island was purchased by the Wrigley family, when the Chicago Cubs did their training on the island, its role in WWII, to the history of transportation to the island, and of course, the island being a playground for Hollywood’s Golden Age including the discovery of one of Hollywood’s biggest stars of all time, Marilyn Monroe.

And as the name suggests, you can find art exhibits here as well including a permanent Chihuly glass installation on their outdoor terrace next to the amphitheater.

Lunch at The Naughty Fox

ahi tuna bowl at The Naughty Fox Restaurant on Catalina Island at the Bellanca Hotel

We recommend planning your lunch around doing an inland tour of the island on this day during your weekend in Catalina. This might mean you have an early lunch or plan to have a late lunch, regardless of what works for your schedule, we recommend having a delicious, fresh lunch from The Naughty Fox restaurant at the Bellanca Hotel.

Their outdoor seating section offers a waterfront view on the opposite side of the roundabout where you’ll see the adorable golf carts zip by and enjoy views of the Casino and ocean as your backdrop.

This restaurant serves up coastal cuisine with a wine list and island-inspired cocktails. We especially loved their salads topped with fresh tuna and the ahi poke nachos.

Interior Island Tour

Scott standing on the back side of Catalina Island with an incredible view of Little Harbor

One of the best things to do on the island is to take a scenic tour to the interior of the island or the backside of the island where you can find all the undeveloped beauty that the Wrigley family promised to protect when purchasing the island.

Depending on what tour or experience you want to do you have the opportunity to see untouched, pristine beaches on the back end of the island, smaller hiking adventures along the Trans Catalina Trail (which is a multi-day trek across the entire island), wildlife spottings like the small native fox and the herd of bison that roams the island, to day trips to Two Harbors.

The Catalina Island Conservancy offers Eco Tours daily which you can book in advance online. We really enjoyed our customized tours with Catalina Backcountry which offers personalized, private tours depending on what it is you want to do or see. We did a few hours on a personalized tour of the interior of the island witnessing incredible views of the ocean, beaches, and even saw the tiny Catalina Island fox!

They also offer personalized tours that include taking guests to a beach on the back end of the island to hang out for the day, special trips for a private, intimate wedding proposal, customized hiking trips, and for those who want to do the multi-day Trans Catalina Trail in style they offer a service where they take your luggage and set up camp for you each night so you can do the multi-day trek with just your day bag and not have to worry about lugging all of your things around or where you’re going to sleep and what you’re going to eat.

Catalina Island Mini Golf

Mini Golf in Catalina Island

One of our favorite activities to do on any visit to Catalina whether we are spending a weekend in Catalina or just a day trip is to enjoy a round of mini-golf at the Catalina Island Mini Golf course!

Open daily from 9:00 to 5:00, you can enjoy all the fun on this 18-hole course in a gorgeous lush garden in the heart of downtown Avalon. The course is pretty fun and also has plenty of holes that have trick shot opportunities.

Pay attention to the little signs at each course as they are full of island facts as well as hints for how to get a hole in one at each hole!

Dinner at Lobster Trap

Lobster Trap restaurant on Catalina Island in California

We’ve asked many locals on our visits to the island and time after time everyone always says their favorite spot for dinner is the Lobster Trap which is why we recommend spending at least one of your dinners during your Catalina Island weekend trip enjoying a seafood feast here!

Hop inside this nautical-themed restaurant where people rave about the seafood pasta dishes and there are fresh catches of the day available as an entree. We both got great local catches as our meal and loved how lively and fun the entire setting was here!

Megan walking toward to Catalina Yacht Club from Descanso Beach on Catalina Island at dusk

We recommend hitting up the evening activities mentioned on our first night at Catalina Island during your weekend stay. If you’re not completely exhausted from all the fun in the sun and island activities there’s also the Chi Chi Club (oh hey, another Chi Chi!) which is the only nightlife club on the island.

Another additional option is the Catalina Room Escape , a pirate-themed escape room in downtown Avalon.

Day 3: Weekend in Catalina

Via Casino view on Catalina Island in California

If you’re spending a traditional weekend in Catalina, chances are this is your last day on the island and you have a ferry departing Avalon later in the afternoon. We always try to get the later afternoon ferry so we have more time to enjoy the island activities and another lunch before departing back to the mainland.

Breakfast at Pancake Cottage

If you love a large homestyle-cooked breakfast this is the spot for you! Sit back and enjoy a feast for breakfast in this popular morning spot on the island.

We actually ordered a breakfast burrito to-go and split it (the portions here are pretty large and it’s very easy to split a meal) while sitting on a bench near the Pleasure Pier to enjoy the morning waterfront view.

Whether you want a stack of pancakes or a hearty breakfast, they’ve got it!

Catalina Casino Tour

View from Catalina Casino tour on Catalina Island in California

During your Catalina weekend getaway learn a bit more about the island’s most iconic landmark, the Casino. You can join one of the daily behind-the-scenes Casino tours with a historian where you’ll have a chance to witness this Art Deco masterpiece of a building that houses a gorgeous 1920s movie theater where the first ‘talkies’ where shown, the world’s largest circular ballroom on the second floor, and the rare pipe organ inside the casino to name a few highlights you’ll uncover on this educational tour.

Or you’re free to pay admission and wander the Catalina Casino freely on your weekend in Catalina.

along the coastline of Catalina Island in California on a snorkeling excursion

Whether you’re visiting off-season or in the summer, there are fun snorkeling adventures to be had off the coast of Catalina Island. We recommend booking a snorkeling excursion with Catalina Diver’s Supply which takes you on a fun 2-hour snorkeling adventure with everything you need – a boat to get to the best spots, a wetsuit for the colder months, fins, and your snorkel gear!

You’ll get to witness the beauty below the surface of the turquoise waters including getting up close to the bright orange Garibaldi fish which are found everywhere along the island.

In the summer months, they offer a 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm option for snorkeling adventures, off-season they only offer one time. You will want to book this in advance and may need to adjust your Catalina Island weekend trip itinerary if the only time available is the later afternoon time since it would be getting back very close to your ferry departure.

If you’re trying to follow this weekend in Catalina itinerary exactly, we recommend getting the 12:00 pm tour that lasts 2 hours so you have time to relax and get to the late afternoon ferry on time.

Final Lunch

Depending on which activities on our suggested Catalina Island weekend trip itinerary you followed, you have probably worked up an appetite and are going to need a great meal before heading back to the ferry journey to the mainland.

As we mentioned, all the food on the island is great. But if you want a few personal recommendations we have two that we have yet to mention in this guide.

Bluewater Avalon is the perfect spot if you want to enjoy a seafood lunch on their gorgeous outdoor deck and patio right on the water.

If you’re a pizza fan like us, don’t miss Antonio’s Pizza . There are two locations, there’s Antonio’s Pizzeria & Cabaret located on the waterfront next to Bluewater Avalon or their 1950s style pizza joint at 114 Sumner Avenue which is pretty special as you can’t help but admire the nostalgic dining room setting complete with the checkered table cloths and fun decor covering the walls.

Where to Stay on Your Catalina Island Weekend Trip

Megan and Scott enjoying the sundeck at the Bellanca Hotel on Catalina Island in California

For this trip, we stayed at the beautiful Bellanca Hotel located in the heart of downtown Avalon on Crescent Avenue overlooking Catalina Harbor.

This location is great as you are just a brief walk from the ferry terminal and close to everything there is to do and see in downtown Avalon.

Onsite amenities include The Naughty Fox restaurant which has a gorgeous outdoor dining space open to guests and the public as well as an outdoor sundeck with seats and umbrellas with unobstructed ocean views to relax at for guests.

The rooms are spacious with artistic accents and some offer their own private balconies. Book here.

For more hotel options check out our full guide to where to stay on Catalina Island including different accommodation options for every type of traveler.

Other Catalina Travel Tips

gorgeous view of the Casino from a viewpoint on Catalina Island in California

Here are a few essential tips for your Catalina Island weekend trip and itinerary including what to pack and a few useful resources for booking your on-island activities.

If you’re prone to motion sickness you’ll want to come prepared for the ferry ride to and from Catalina Island. The ferry service is very smooth, but on days with the high wind the ride is a little rocky and those who are prone to motion sickness may feel it the worst. Come prepared with things that settle the stomach like ginger ale or purchase ginger chews , Dramamine for motion sickness , or try a motion sickness patch .

Come prepared with sunscreen too! We recommend, especially if you’re planning on getting in the water, to purchase reef-safe and eco-friendly sunscreen as many brands contain harmful chemicals to the ocean that people don’t realize. Unfortunately, the ‘reef friendly’ sunscreen label isn’t regulated so you often get brands who are ‘greenwashing’ or pretending to be safe for the environment even though they are not – which makes things confusing for the consumer.

My personal favorite brand is Thinksport as their formula applies evenly and doesn’t leave a weird white minerally residue.

There are plenty of small, charming boutiques on the island for any last-minute things you may have forgotten and even a full-on Vons grocery store too.

For booking on island activities, if you didn’t purchase in advance (which is highly advised for the summer season) there is still a chance you can book all kinds of island excursions from boat rides, submarine rides, snorkeling, island tours, Casino tours and more. If you want to try your chances of booking last minute you can at several spots around the island including the blue Pleasure Pier, the information and ticketing spot at the Catalina Island mini-golf, and directly at some attractions like the Casino.

If you’re visiting off-season like we did in March or April, chances are you’ll be able to book last-minute activities but keep in mind they don’t operate at their full schedule off-season, so it’s still recommended to book in advance.

September offers a prime time to visit Catalina Island. The weather is still warm, crowds thin out after summer, and various activities can be enjoyed without the peak-season rush. The winter months are also an underrated time to visit Catalina Island as there are fewer crowds, better hotel deals, and the weather is still comfortable.

A 2 to 3-day visit to Catalina Island is ideal, allowing you to explore its attractions, enjoy outdoor activities, and experience its unique ambiance without feeling rushed.

The cost of a trip to Catalina Island varies. A day trip might be around $75-$100 for transportation and basic activities. A multi-day stay with accommodation can range from $200 to $500+ per person, excluding extras.

Yes, you can spend a day on Catalina Island but since there are so many things to do and see here it’s best to spend a night or two to see more of the island and it’s beauty, attractions, and historic sites.

How to Get to Catalina Island

The best way to get to Catalina Island is by ferry. The Catalina Express operates multiple ferries a day. In our opinion, the ferry is both the most convenient option, and it also gives you the chance to spot dolphins, seals, and whales on the 1.5-hour journey to Catalina Island.

The Catalina Express ferry service operates from three ports: Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point. Choose the one that is most convenient for you. We recommend purchasing tickets in advance. You can buy tickets online, by phone, or in person at the ferry terminal. Prices vary depending on the departure port, type of ferry, and time of year.

The ferry ride is around 1.5 hours. Snacks and drinks can be purchased on board, too, so if you forget travel snacks at home—they’ve got you covered. The Catalina Express also offers a range of amenities to make the trip comfortable and enjoyable, including comfortable seating, air conditioning, and restrooms.

In addition to its standard ferry service, the Catalina Express also offers a range of special packages and deals. For example, visitors can take advantage of the Island Hopper package, which includes a round-trip ferry service and a trolley tour of the island’s highlights. Other packages may include activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, or a visit to the island’s famous Catalina Casino.

The ports usually offer daily parking. We departed from Dana Point, where the overnight parking was $20 per day. If you’re traveling with kids and lots of luggage, our insider tip is to drop the luggage off at the Ferry terminal and then park your car. It’s a couple-minute walk from the overnight parking lot to the ferry terminal.

Keep your eyes open for dolphins, seals, and whales along your journey!

As the ferry approaches Catalina Island, passengers are treated with stunning views of Catalina’s rugged coastline and crystal-clear waters. Upon arrival, passengers disembark at the island’s main town of Avalon, which offers a range of attractions, including beaches, shops, restaurants, and museums.

Alternatively, you can visit Catalina Island by air. IEX Helicopters operates flights from Long Beach directly to Avalon for $349 round trip.

Where is Catalina Island?

Catalina Island is a small island located off the coast of Southern California. It is part of the Channel Islands archipelago just a couple miles southwest of Los Angeles. On a clear day, you can see L.A. with the San Bernadino and San Gabriel mountains in the background from the island.

When to Visit Catalina Island

Catalina Island has a mild subtropical climate with year-round warm temperatures—it’s never too hot and never too cold. In the summer temperatures climb to an average of 72 degrees F during the day and 63 degrees F in the winter. Even though this doesn’t seem too high, never underestimate the sun. Pack your sunscreen and make sure to apply and reapply it even when it’s cloudy.

Catalina Island is great in any season but if you want to avoid the crowds while not having the temperatures drop too low, we recommend visiting in spring or fall.

How to Get to Two Harbors from Avalon

The island has two main towns: Avalon and Two Harbors. Avalon is the more popular of the two, offering a variety of restaurants, bars, boutiques, and art galleries. Two Harbors is a smaller, more secluded town that is perfect for those looking for a quiet getaway.

San Pedro to Two Harbor

To get to Two Harbors from the mainland, you can take the Catalina Express ferry from San Pedro. The schedule to and from Two Harbor, however, is limited, so make sure to check the most current schedule on their website.

Avalon to Two Harbors

Hop in the Cyclone power boat from Avalon to Two Harbors . This might be the quickest and most economical way to get to Two Harbors from Avalon. The Cyclone Power Boat, however, does not operate all year, so make sure to check if the boat is operating (May to October). The ride to Two Harbors takes around 40 minutes.

Private Transport

You can book private transport to Two Harbors from Avalon. The drive is a little over one hour and prices can range from $200 to $250.

Where to Eat on Catalina Island

When you visit Catalina Island you’ll find plenty of options along the promenade to grab a bite while enjoying amazing views of the mainland and the island itself.

Naughty Fox

Located at the Bellanca Hotel, the Naughty Fox is one of our island favorites. This little restaurant offers great food and drinks with a good view. We went for dinner and breakfast and liked everything we tried. With just a few tables, the Naughty Fox can fill up quickly so make sure to get there early or call to make a reservation. Our favorite menu item was the Ahi Poke Nachos and we’ll definitely be back for more.

catalina island travel tips

CafĂŠ Metropole

This little cafĂŠ might be our favorite place in Avalon for breakfast, arguably the best breakfast on Catalina Island. Order a delicious drink from their juice bar and some homemade sandwiches. We couldn’t decide on what to order but luckily, it’s okay to be indecisive at CafĂŠ Metropole . You can order half/half sandwiches to try two different sandwiches.  Make sure to check out this breakfast spot when you visit Catalina Island.

Descanso Beach Club

Descanso Beach Club is a great place to enjoy a cold drink and enjoy the sun at the beach. We love the laid-back vibe, and it reminds you that you’re on an island. Chaise lounges and private cabanas are available for rent and lunch is served daily from 11am to 3pm.

It’s about a 15-minute walk from the pier so make sure to plan accordingly if you are visiting Avalon from a cruise ship.

catalina island travel tips

Bluewater in Avalon

Our pick for one of the best restaurants on Catalina Island with a view is the Bluewater Avalon . It is one of the few restaurants where you can enjoy oceanside fine dining in Avalon. The menu is mainly seafood inspired but offers meat dishes and options for vegetarians. Oceanside tables are limited but you can make a reservation online.

catalina island travel tips

The Lobster Trap

If you ask anyone on the island where to go for dinner, we can certainly guarantee most people will recommend The Lobster Trap. We had dinner at Lobster Trap and loved the casual atmosphere there! They only take walk-ins so get there early or be prepared for a wait during peak season.

El Galleon

Right in the center of the promenade, you’ll find Avalon’s favorite karaoke restaurant. Every Saturday this restaurant turns into a karaoke bar and restaurant. Not your thing? El Galleon also is a great place with tasty bites to visit for lunch or dinner any other day of the week.

Where to Stay on Catalina Island

The bellanca hotel .

The Bellanca Hotel in Catalina Island is a charming and cozy hotel that provides a comfortable and affordable stay in the center of Avalon. It’s easily one of the best places to stay on Catalina Island. The rooms at the Bellanca Hotel are clean, cozy, and well-maintained, with comfortable beds and all the necessary amenities such as air conditioning, cable TV, and Wi-Fi. Some rooms also offer stunning views of the ocean or the town.

One of the standout features of the Bellanca Hotel is its rooftop deck, which offers great views of the bay and the ocean.  Book your stay here!

Hotel Atwater

The Hotel Atwater is centrally located in Avalon and was built under the direction of William Wrigley Jr. in 1919. The Hotel has been renovated and modernized since then and offers a unique experience on Catalina Island.

Mt Ada

You’ll find the most luxurious property nested on Mt Ada . The hotel with the same name was once used by William Wrigley Jr. and his wife Ada before it was turned into a hotel. This truly stunning property offers one of the best views on the island, but only has six individually designed guest rooms, so be sure to book well in advance of your visit.

Things to Do when visit Catalina Island

Go for a hike with catalina backcountry .

We always enjoy exploring on foot and went on a stunning sunrise hike with Catalina Backcountry . Barry, our guide, picked us up early for a scenic hike with some stunning views. To get to our sunrise viewpoint it was around a 30-minute hike uphill on partially maintained roads. We enjoyed the sunrise and then continued our hike. You’ll enjoy multiple great views of Avalon and the island. If you’re lucky, you might spot a bison or Catalina Island fox.

Catalina Backcountry offers different hikes for everyone. If you are in for a multi-day hike they also offer gear hauls and camp set-ups for you.

If you want to plan something more romantic, they can help you set up a beautiful picnic with a view.

Sunrise Hike

We started our tracker a bit too late so the information might be a bit off.

  • Length: Around 9.5 miles
  • Elevation: 1450ft
  • Duration: 3hrs 30min (depending on how fast you are)

Tour the Catalina Island Casino

When arriving on Catalina Island, one of the buildings that immediately stands out is the Casino. This circular structure is not only a nice photo backdrop but also has some interesting history. In our opinion, booking a casino tour is a must when you visit Catalina Island.

This casino is not an actual casino and never was. There has never been any gambling at the casino, but it was built to host events!

We did the Behind-the-Scenes Casino tour which gives you more time to explore and experience this beautiful structure. If you are short of time, you can also sign up for the Discover the Casino tour which is shorter but will still give you a lot of information.

catalina island travel tips

Watch a Movie at the Casino

The Casino is still showing movies and you can purchase tickets directly at the ticket window. You can enjoy a movie in this historically rich theater while enjoying the amazing architecture and interior. Many celebrities throughout history like Marlyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin have sat on those seats enjoying films.

Check the timetables for viewings since they do not show movies every day.

Rent a Golf Cart

Another great activity when you visit Catalina Island is renting a golf cart . And it is possibly the easiest way to get around the island. The reason why you see so many golf carts on the island is because Catalina Island has a strict limitation on cars. Golf carts do not fall into that limitation, and this is why you’ll see so many of them. Basically, Catalina Island golf cart rental is your key to getting around.

We rented a golf cart for a couple hours to visit some of the viewpoints that are a bit of a walk. Also, because we did a 10-mile hike the day before, our legs were understandably a little tired.

Bison Experience in a Biofuel Hummer

If you want to experience Catalina Island’s backcountry but don’t have multiple days to hike across the islands, join one of the Bison Experience tours in a Biofuel Hummer . Your experienced driver will take you to some of the best viewpoints with the chance to spot some of the free-roaming bison on the island.

Starting in Avalon, the Hummer takes you up windy roads to your first viewpoint. From there your capable driver will take you deeper into the island for a chance to spot bison and Catalina foxes.

The Catalina fox is native to the island whereas the bison was brought to the island in the 1920s for a movie production and have since lived on the island. We’ve been lucky to spot one bison and a Catalina fox on our tour but since they’re free-roaming animals there is no guarantee that you’ll see some. Nevertheless, the bison tour is a great experience when you visit Catalina Island, especially to be able to see much more of the island in a short time.

Make Your Own Catalina Tiles

Strolling through Avalon, you’ll find that the town is decorated with many beautiful tiles. Rather than importing tiles from the mainland, all tiles you see on Catalina are produced right there on Catalina Island. You can buy Catalina tiles in one of the souvenir shops or make them yourself.

Robin, the owner of the Catalina Tile Experience , will pick you up and take you to her studio where she explains a bit of the history of how Catalina tile production started. You’ll make two tiles in a design of your choosing. You can then select the colors in which you want to receive the tiles. Since it takes a while for the tiles to dry and get burned and painted the tiles will be sent back to you.

This is a fun experience, and a chance to take a very unique, custom souvenir home.

Treat Yourself to a Spa Day

Part of the reason we take vacations is to relax, and what better way to relax than by enjoying a spa day at the Island Spa in Avalon. Although we haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy the spa yet, we’ve heard great things and feel confident in recommending a rejuvenating treatment or an entire day of R-and-R.

Explore Avalon on Foot

The best way to explore the town of Avalon is on foot. There is plenty to discover in Avalon like colorful houses and stunning viewpoints. Don’t forget to bring your camera and snap photos as you get lost in the beautiful side streets. We took the time to explore the town and found so many picturesque spots.

Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens

One of the highlights when visiting Catalina Island is the Wrigley Memorial. The Botanical Garden started as Ada Wrigley’s private desert plant collection and is now managed and Maintained by the Catalina Island Conservancy.

The Wrigley Memorial at the end of the botanical garden offers some great views over the botanical garden and Avalon Canyon.

Both can be accessed with the same ticket.

Zip Line Eco Tour

Adrenaline seekers, this is your must-do Catalina Island activity. The zip line adventure takes you on five separate lines down to Descanso Beach Club. You’ll enjoy some great views while gliding down at up to 35mph.

Relax at the Beach

Just want to relax and soak up some sun when you visit Catalina Island? Head to Descanso Beach for a relaxing day of people-watching and sunbathing. If you have some time and would like something a bit more secluded check out one of the other beaches like Lover’s Cove, Emerald Bay, Pebbly Beach, and Two Harbors.

The 21 best things to do on Catalina

FP Movement

Santa Catalina may be only an hour from the Southern California mainland, but it feels a world away. During the pandemic, it may as well have been a universe away. Leisure travel was banned and the island’s lifeblood — its visitors — disappeared.

Like the rest of the state, Catalina’s 4,000 locals hunkered down and tried to stay healthy. But they did something else too: They looked to the future. The goal was to restore tourism — and they are succeeding. There are so many new, updated or recently developed things to see and do that even frequent visitors will find a gold mine of opportunities.

Local businesses worked wonders during the pandemic, said Jim Luttjohann, president of the Catalina Tourism Authority. “Ordinarily, when the visitor volume turns down, you replace carpet at your hotel or paint the outside of your store,” he said. But because the pandemic lasted so long, local owners “redoubled their efforts repairing and upgrading,” with millions of dollars invested in upgrades in hotels, restaurants, hiking trails and activities.

Consequently, the island has a fresh, welcoming look. “It’s undergone a renaissance,” he said, “while remaining true to the island’s history and culture.”

We looked around and found 21 things to see and do in Catalina in 2021.

First things first

1. The island offers visitors a clean, inviting look the moment they arrive. New landscaping, picnic tables, kids slides, swings, playsets and a jazzy sports park have created a friendlier first impression as passengers debark from ferries and head out Pebbly Beach Road for the center of Avalon.

Happy trails to all

2. Next up as you enter town is the sleek Trailhead visitor center (708 Crescent Ave.), easily the most impressive addition to the town in five years. The $14.5-million facility replaced the tottering Catherine Hotel, which dated to the 1890s.

Trailhead, the 9,000-square-foot flagship facility for the Catalina Island Conservancy, is a gateway to the island’s wildlands and a great place to begin a visit. You can learn about Catalina’s 42,000-plus acres of open space and 62 miles of rugged shoreline. Visitors also will find hiking and biking permits, trail maps and info about camping, native flora and fauna, ecology and history. Want to take a four-wheel-drive tour of the backcountry? You can set that up here too.

The LEED-certified building is a hit with visitors. ”We’re probably seeing the same number of people in a month here that we were seeing in a year in the past,” said Tim Kielpinski, chief operating officer.

Above it all

3. While at Trailhead, climb the stairs to the new Toyon Grill (708 Crescent Ave.), which has outstanding views of Avalon and the harbor from its second-floor patio and rooftop dining area. The restaurant, a sister facility of Avalon’s Bluewater Grill, has entrees from $10. If you’re not hungry, have a coffee or glass of wine or just a take a few panoramic snaps. Your Instagram followers will love it.

Moving right along

People look at golf carts in front of a building while cart full of people drives past

4. Many businesses have been upgraded. One of the first you’ll see is next to Trailhead, Catalina Island Golf Cart (625 Crescent Ave.), where new construction has added shade, an enlarged and redesigned interior and a clean look. Go inside and you’ll find simplified cart rental procedures and a colorful map to help you get your bearings as you putt around Avalon.

Toes-in-the-sand dining

5. When the pandemic forced restaurants to serve customers outside, the Catalina City Council approved dining on the beach a few steps from the water’s edge. It turned into an Avalon first that everyone loved. String lights now festoon Crescent Beach, candles decorate the tables and musicians sometimes stroll. During the spring, beach dining was available in the afternoon too. But in summer, it is limited to evening hours so that there’s plenty of room for day-trippers to throw down a towel. Six restaurants offer beach dining: Steve’s Steakhouse and Seafood , Maggie’s Blue Rose , NDMK Fish House , Catalina Cantina , Luau Larry’s and El Galleon .

Room at the inns

A hotel front counter backed by a mural of palm trees, ocean, a cruise ship and a Spanish Revival-style building

The island’s hoteliers have staged a major reboot — enlarging, repairing and refurbishing five of Catalina’s oldest hotels. Included are impressive renovations and top-to-bottom rebuilds of two historic inns: the Hotel Atwater and Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel .

6. Expect to find two chilled splits of sparkling wine waiting in your room after you check in to the Hotel Atwater (125 Sumner Ave.). The 95-room inn opened in 1920, the first hotel built on the island by William Wrigley Jr. after he purchased Catalina Island Co. more than a century ago. He named it after his son’s wife, Helen Atwater Wrigley, who loved her Champagne — and drank a split of it daily. The in-room splits are a tribute to bubbly Helen. The hotel was closed for nearly a year and a half while being renovated. Now it’s among the most attractive lodgings on the island, with a stately lobby, nicely decorated rooms, historic artwork and an elevator, one of few on the island. Summer rates start at $359 per night.

A spacious hotel room with wood floors and a view of the ocean

7. You’ll find another elevator at Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel (199 Chimes Tower Road), but that’s not its claim to fame. Set on a hill overlooking the bay, the stylish Zane Grey has sweeping views, attractive furnishings and an upscale vibe. Like the Atwater, it was totally revamped. Two buildings were added, and most of its 17 rooms now are plush suites. A historic landmark, the hotel was established in 1926 and served as a getaway for author Zane Grey (1872-1939), best known for his adventure novels and stories associated with the West. The hotel has a pool and a three-bedroom penthouse suite. Summer rates start at $329 per night.

8. A new name among the hotels is the Bellanca , formerly the Portofino. This 40-room, oceanfront hotel (111 Crescent Ave.) underwent a $4-million renovation that included a new restaurant, the Naughty Fox . Hotel upgrades include improving the rooftop lounge, lobby, room furnishings and bathrooms. Summer rates from $299 per night.

9 . Other Catalina hotels also refurbished guest and public rooms during the pandemic. Among these are the Hermosa Hotel (131 Metropole Ave.), built in 1895, which updated its flooring, furniture, paint and windows and added a balcony and a beer and wine bar. The hotel, popular with divers, is one of the few Avalon lodgings that is dog-friendly and has consistently lower rates than most competitors. Summer rates from $195 per night.

10. The Catalina Island Inn (125 Metropole Ave.), a four-story Victorian built in 1907, is another old-timer that has been renovated. Many of its guest rooms were gutted, and showers, tile, carpet, furniture, beds, lighting and TVs were replaced. The lobby was tiled and painted, and hallways carpeted. Summer rates from $368 per night.

Happy campers

People gather at a picnic table in front of a row of large tent cabins

11. The island’s hotels are pricey; how about camping instead? Catalina is an outdoor lover’s paradise; campers will find new digs at Avalon’s only campground, Hermit Gulch (1201 Avalon Canyon Road), about two miles from downtown. Nine new cabins have been installed. Another helpful improvement is a new reservation system that allows campers to book online.

Take a hike

A trail winds along ridgetops

12. The most challenging hike on the island is the Trans-Catalina Trail , a rugged three- to four-day backcountry route from one end of the island to the other. Among the pluses are camping spots near pristine beaches. During the pandemic, the 38½-mile route was realigned by the Catalina Conservancy to offer more picturesque views and less interaction with the public. The conservancy also improved other trails on the island, added trailside toilets and shade structures, and replaced signs.

Grab your date

13 . Looking for entertainment? Try the Catalina Island Co.’s new Movies Under the Stars at Descanso Beach Club (1 St. Catherine Way). From July 11 through Sept. 26, grab dinner at the beach, then watch a movie under the stars. Dinner is 5-8 p.m., with the movie beginning at sunset. Full bar available.

14. How about a romantic tour of the island’s interior? Catalina Taxi & Tours, under new management, has added a Toast California Tour that will whisk a couple to one of the island’s picturesque overlooks for wine, charcuterie and a couple of hours of alone time. Rates from $437 for two.

15. Take a custom tour of Avalon with your honey. Pop the question at a romantic overlook or just celebrate with a special someone. CatalinaTourGuide.com , a new golf cart service, offers a two-hour guided tour for two that includes food and beverages. $500; add a guitarist for $100 more. Guided group tours (up to five) also available, from $260. Pet-friendly.

Hooked on big fish?

16. Fishing devotees looking for a challenge can hook up with a new Catalina charter. John King, whose Afishinados charters have been uniting fishermen with game fish for more than two decades, is now offering swordfish charters. “During the pandemic, we had time to figure out how to catch them,” he said. The eight-hour swordfish charter is $2,400, but King also does shorter charters for families that cost $300 per hour.

26 miles across the sea

17. Catalina has a rich history that includes hosting countless Hollywood stars. During the pandemic shutdown, the staff at Catalina Island Museum (217 Metropole Ave.) kept busy setting up new exhibitions and adding to the facility’s permanent collections. When you visit, expect to learn about the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne and even Winston Churchill, who was fond of fishing the island’s waters. You’ll even learn about the Four Preps’ famous 1957 song about the island, “26 Miles.” And don’t miss the newest exhibitions at the museum, which feature tales and artifacts from the Titanic’s deadly 1912 voyage.

Shop, shop, shop

18. If you’re a fan of retail therapy, you’ll find two new clothing shops in downtown Avalon: Catalina Blue (523B Crescent Ave.) and Sun & Sea Surfwear (621 Crescent Ave.). If you’re a diver, don’t miss the renovated Catalina Divers Supply (1 Casino Way), the oldest dive shop on the island, which has moved into larger digs inside the Casino. The shop is now adjacent to the Casino Point Dive Park.

Eat your heart out

19. Foodies will love the island’s new dining choices. We’ve already mentioned Toyon Grill and the Naughty Fox, but several restaurants have changed hands.

These include:

•M Restaurant (205 Crescent Ave.): Open daily serving an upscale menu with a nice Italian vibe. Choose from pastas, burrata, pizzas and local seafood such as seabass, swordfish and lobster. Excellent wine selection. Entrees from $11.

Pancake Cottage (615 Crescent Ave.): This breakfast and lunch spot has reopened after a yearlong closure and is now open for dinner, adding a happy hour and several new menu items.

Chill at Descanso Beach Club (1 Descanso Beach): Cool off with a frozen cocktail from Chill, a new beachside bar. Flavors include Buffalo Milk, Blue Hawaiian, Mango Margarita, PiĂąa Colada, Jack & Coke and Strawberry Daiquiri.

Beach-goers dine under umbrellas at outdoor tables with a view of the bay

Sailor’s Delight Ice Cream Shop (220 Crescent Ave . ) Looking for a cone or sandwich? Sailor’s Delight becomes the third ice cream shop on Crescent Avenue, joining Lloyd’s and Scoops. It is in the former Olaf’s space and features ice cream from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Co. in Madison, Wis.

NDMK (Endemic) Fish House (109 Claressa Ave.): This seafood restaurant, owned by a family of fishermen, specializes in locally caught fish. Entrees from $12.

20. Several new or recently purchased restaurants are in the initial stages of planning menus or developing a customer base. Among these are Eric’s on the Pier, the Cove Bar & Grill and Mrs. T’s Chinese Kitchen.

Other longtime Avalon favorites are updating their menus and introducing new flavors: Standout Avalon Grille has a fun new menu that includes small bites such as baked polpettes (meatballs), chicken lollipops and flash-fried Brussels sprouts, in addition to handcrafted cocktails such as the lavender lemon-tini. An updated cocktail menu is among new items at popular Maggie’s Blue Rose, where you might want to try the margaritas con paletas.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Catalina Island

Sharing is caring!

The Do’s and Don’ts tips of Catalina Island- how to plan the best, cheapest vacation or day-trip with all the fun! Use these tips to find deals and packages that will best suit your trip! Learn about how to save money, transportation options, places to hike, and activities to do on the island.

My husband and I took a day trip to the island, and we already can’t wait to go back! There was so much to see that we spent most of the day just walking around and exploring. When we go back, we plan to stay for a few days and see more of the other side of the island. But as a day-trip, there was so much to do, in and around the main city of Avalon. Here are my tips of do’s and don’ts for a great day-trip to Catalina Island.

Catalina Island tickets

Catalina Island Tips:

Do take the ferry.

This was honestly one of the best parts of the trip. Although you can take a helicopter ride or the ferry, we chose the much cheaper option. Often, you can find a Groupon for two tickets that take you from Newport Beach, putting the price at just under $90! Because we were just doing a day trip and not staying overnight, we decided to take the Catalina Express from Long Beach since it leaves earlier and stays later. Together, our tickets were about $140 total, so it was still affordable for an hour+ ferry ride. The ferry itself was really fun, and the evening boat ride back was gorgeous with the sunset. DO BRING A JACKET if you plan to sit on the upper deck. It got super chilly and I was in shorts!

Instead of a ferry ride, you can also get a package where you can jet ski to Catalina Island! Although we thought about it, we decided to get to the island faster to spend more time there. Maybe next time we will try it out!

Don’t rent a golf cart

To us, the prices for golf carts were so expensive. It was $50/hr, with very limited places to park them. For our day trip, we were able to walk everywhere we wanted, no problem. I would only recommend golf carts for those that have trouble walking long distances or people who planned a lot of events close together. We did the Garden to Sky Hike, and even walked to the trailhead. Walking, it was about 40 minutes from the mainland to the Garden, and then another 20 minutes on the hike. Overall, the walk was easy, with lots to see along the way. If you do have trouble walking, definitely rent the golf cart!

Do plan ahead!

One thing we did not realize was there isn’t a great way to get from one side of the island to the other. To get to the other side, you basically have to have your own boat or pay for an extremely expensive taxi ride. Next time, we will probably budget that in. Everyone told us the best beaches are on the other side of the island! Another option is doing a very long hike, but we were told you better plan on the whole day hiking and very little beach time.

To save money, plan to bring water bottles and/or food with you for the day. We ate at a good Mexican restaurant called Maggie’s Blue Rose Mexican right off the harbor. It was pretty affordable and the food was really good. We bought some cheap postcards to send to family, and that was about the cheapest thing we could find on the island 😉

catalina island travel tips

Don’t plan beach time in Avalon

My husband and I are beach enthusiasts, and Avalon’s beaches were not our favorite. They are extremely rocky and the sand is brought in from elsewhere and spread across concrete slabs. Due to the sharp pebbles under the water, we are very glad we wore our water shoes! If you’re looking for a beach close to Avalon that you can walk to, Descanso beach was free and not far from where the ferry brings you in. Next time, we really want to explore the beaches on the other side of the island! In retrospect, we wish we had planned more beach time in LA because the beaches were way nicer than in Avalon.

Do visit Wrigley’s Memorial !

It’s about $8 per person to get into the Gardens. The entire garden is filled with amazing desert plants, including cacti and other species. It was very, very cool. My husband and I loved it! The Memorial itself has gorgeous architecture and cool patterns. For about 30 minutes, we walked around to admire it! We took a lot of pictures here. Next, we went on to do the Garden to Sky Hike, which was moderately difficult, but I wouldn’t hesitate to bring children with us. However, you can also end at the Memorial because the view from there is still really beautiful.

catalina island travel tips

Don’t expect seclusion!

Unsurprisingly, the city of Avalon is very touristy. Although we didn’t have to wait in long lines or anything, the whole island felt very crowded. The beaches were packed and the streets were filled with golf carts. It was hard to get a picture without someone in it. If you went another time of the year, I bet it would be a lot less crowded. The only time we were alone was on our Garden to Sky Hike.

Do look into packages!

If you’re planning on doing multiple fun events at the island (parasailing, ziplining, etc.) there are some pretty awesome packages that let you combine multiple activities and pay less. We loved parasailing with California Parasail and felt totally safe with them. It was an awesome experience and you feel like you are up in the air for a fair amount of time. Packages for housing and food are available if you do decide to stay longer on the island. Many packages also include your passage on the ferry to Catalina Island, which can save a lot of money in the long run.

Don’t hesitate!

Go, go, go! Truly, Catalina Island made for a great vacation highlight. In one day, we got to do and see so many cool things! In the future, I want to return for one of the dances at the Observatory, or go for 4th of July to see the fireworks. Still, even without much planning ahead, it made for an amazing day-trip! Remember these Do’s and Don’ts of Catalina Island on your next trip!

You got it pretty right, however, unless one is in great condition the hills and the sights are too difficult to cover in such a short period of time. Get the Golf Cart…Money well spent

Try Two Harbours and area, especially Cat. Seldom crowded, the “Far end” of the island is less touristy except immediately around the landing. There are real beaches and fine trails. Swimming and scuba, is safe, waters are mostly clear and warm enough for minimal gear

We go to Catalina Island every year for a week. You can rent affordable houses there too! Truly is a little bit of paradise just a hour away by Ferry. Loved your do’s and Don’t of Catalina Island if you get a chance stay longer than a day lots to see

18 Incredible Things to Do on Catalina Island: Southern California’s Island Paradise

By: Author Caroline Ikeji

Categories California , Travel Guides , USA

Looking to escape to an island paradise…without leaving California? Then look no further than Catalina Island. Located just 22 miles off the Southern California coast, there are plenty of things to do on Catalina Island, whether you are looking for thrilling outdoor adventures, a romantic getaway, or a relaxing beach vacation.

I first visited Catalina Island in seventh grade. My mom was in Japan at the time, and my dad and I were bored and looking for something to do one weekend. We spontaneously decided to go on a day trip to Catalina Island.

Unfortunately, our getaway was so spontaneous that when we strolled up to the ferry, it turned out that the only tickets left would basically leave us with only two hours on the island – basically, just enough time to eat lunch. Still, I fell in love with the island and its natural beauty, its laid-back island vibe, and the charming town of Avalon, and vowed to return someday.

catalina island travel tips

Well, it took over 20 years to get back, but it was well worth the wait! My boyfriend and I recently planned a weekend getaway to Catalina Island , and it was just like escaping to the Mediterranean – except much cheaper and much closer (only an hour and a half via ferry from our home in Orange County ).

Catalina Island can easily be visited as a day trip or weekend getaway from the Los Angeles area , yet it feels like a world away. It’s got such a different vibe from the mainland and was such a perfect little getaway without being too far from home.

There are so many things to do in Catalina island to suit any kind of traveler. Relaxing on the beach? Check. Outdoor adventures? Check. Delicious food? Check. Incredible photogenic views (some of the best in Los Angeles )? Check. A unique history? Check. Luxury accommodations? Check. This island has it all.

Keep on reading for all of the best things to do on Catalina Island!

About Catalina Island

Located off the coast of Southern California, Catalina Island (officially known as Santa Catalina Island) is the southernmost island of the Channel Islands.

The island measures 72 square miles (22 miles across, eight miles wide), with the incorporated city of Avalon (population 4,000) on the east end, and the unincorporated village of Two Harbors on the west end (population 298).

Catalina Island was originally home to the Native Americans known as the Tongvas (later known as the Gabrieliños), who inhabited the island for almost 7000 years. There were an estimated 2,000-3000 Tongvas who once lived on the island, in villages consisting of extended family members, each numbering 50-100. The site of these villages would later become Avalon, Two Harbors, Empire Landing, White’s Landing and Toyon Bay.

catalina island travel tips

Over the years,Catalina Island has been occupied by explorers, smugglers, gold diggers, pirates, hunters, the Union army and missionaries. Eventually the island was taken over by Spanish colonialists, then turned over to Mexico, then eventually the United States. It has also served as a strategic stronghold for the US military during World War II, and has even served as a training camp for what would eventually become the CIA.

Catalina Island’s history as a resort destination dates back about 125 years. In 1864, the island was owned by James Lick, then known as one of the wealthiest men in California. After he failed to develop the island into a resort destination, the island was sold to the sons of Phineas Banning in 1891.

The Banning brothers created the Santa Catalina Island Company (now known as the Catalina Island Company) and began developing building hotels, attractions, and roads into the island’s rugged interior. They also built the Banning House Lodge, and operated stagecoach tours around the island. However, a tragic fire burned down half of the structures in Avalon; while the brothers tried to salvage their investments, the island was sold again in 1919 to chewing gum entrepreneur William Wrigley Jr.

catalina island travel tips

Wrigley had a vision for creating a “playground for all” on the island and is largely credited with the development of the island and turning it into a world-class island resort. He built infrastructure, a reservoir, Hotel Atwater, Bird Park, and other attractions. In addition, he made the island the spring training home for the Chicago Cubs (which he also owned).

In 1929 the iconic Catalina Casino was built, creating a gathering place and a hub of nightlife on the island. The island also became a popular destination for Hollywood elite in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, and was also a popular filming site for production companies.

Upon Wrigley’s death in 1932, ownership of the company was passed on to his son Philip Knight Wrigley, who continued his father’s vision. The Wrigleys still own the island through the Catalina Island Company, which today controls about 11% of the island and still carries on the original vision of the island as a world-class resort destination.

In 1972, the Wrigleys created a land trust in the Catalina Island Conservancy, which manages about 88% of the island’s interior and coastline, promoting “a balance of conservation, recreation, and education.”

When is the best time to visit Catalina Island ?

Catalina Island has a Mediterranean climate, meaning that it experiences mild temperatures year-round, making any time a good time to visit. Summer highs hover around 72 degrees Fahrenheit, with winter temperatures averaging around 60 degrees. However, it does get breezy at night, so come prepared with a cardigan or light jacket!

May through December is the island’s tourist season, with its peak season in the summer months. This is when crowds and accommodation prices are at its highest.

Spring and fall are a great time to visit Catalina Island – we visited in early March and really enjoyed our time there! The weather in the daytime was pleasant (in the mid-upper 60s Fahrenheit), although it did get pretty chilly at night (layer up and bring a jacket!).

While there were a few things closed because it was the offseason (i.e. the Cyclone boat to Two Harbors), the island had a super chill vibe and was not crowded. It was really nice to be able to enjoy the beauty of the island without fighting all of the crowds!

If you want some peace and quiet on the island, consider visiting midweek as there are times that you almost feel like you have the island to yourself (especially if there is no cruise ship scheduled to dock that day).

Catalina Island also is a perfect destination for a winter getaway – you’ll get to escape to the island life and still enjoy the sunshine that Southern California is known for! Visiting during the winter months also means that you’ll find the best deals, as there are midweek boat and hotel packages offered that can help you save up to 50% off! You can see the available packages here .

However, do note that the waters tend to be the choppiest during the winter, so if you’re prone to seasickness, I suggest visiting at another time of year.

How to Get to Catalina Island

Catalina Island is located only 22 miles from the mainland and is easily accessible via Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The only way to reach Catalina Island is via sea or air.

For those of us (like me) who don’t have access to a private boat, plane, or helicopter, the easiest and most affordable way to reach the island is via passenger ferry. Two ferry companies serve four different ports in the LA and Orange County areas: Long Beach, San Pedro, Newport Beach, and Dana Point.

Taking a ferry via Catalina Express is the best way to get to the island – you will have the most flexibility, as it has the most daily departures to the island. Frequent service is offered to Avalon from Long Beach , which is also the fastest option (the trip takes about an hour). You can choose to sail from San Pedro and Dana Point as well. Service to Two Harbors is also offered out of San Pedro.

catalina island travel tips

We took the Catalina Express from Dana Point (which was the most convenient port to us), and enjoyed our trip to the island! The trip takes about an hour and a half, and was super comfortable and relaxing. We were even able to spot a few whales and dolphins on the way, which made the trip extra fun!

A round trip fare costs $83.50 from Long Beach and San Pedro, and $87.50 from Dana Point.

Another option for getting to the island is via the Catalina Flyer , which offers one daily round trip  out of Newport Beach.

The ferry will drop you off in the center of Avalon, a hop and a skip away from all of the best Catalina Island activities. Many accommodations are only a few minutes’ walk away as well. Some hotels also provide baggage service and will help you take your stuff to the hotel.

Be sure to book your ferry tickets in advance, as they could sell out, especially during the peak seasons!

catalina island travel tips

Via Private Boat

Catalina Island is also accessible via private boat. Moorings are available in Two Harbors, and there are several boat-in campgrounds around the island. For more information, see here .

While Catalina Island does have an airport (which is nicknamed the “Airport in the Sky” because it is located at 1,602 ft in elevation), there are no commercial passenger flights available. However, you can reach the island via private plane.

The island is also accessible via helicopter. If you feel like splurging, helicopter service is offered via IEX Helicopters . The trip takes approximately 15 minutes, with departures from Long Beach, Burbank, or Orange County. A round-trip fare costs $179 each way.

catalina island travel tips

How to Get Around Catalina Island

One thing that you’ll notice about Catalina Island is that there are not many cars. This is because vehicles measuring over 120 inches require a permit – and because there are only 800 issued, there is a 17 year wait for one!

So, how does one get around Catalina Island?

Most locals get around via golf cart and you too can rent one for a few hours (it’s actually one of the most popular things to do on Catalina Island – I mention it later on in this article!). There are no overnight rentals, however, it is fun to take one around for a few hours. Some vacation rentals also provide access to one (especially if it’s a property that is further out from the main part of town).

It’s a great way to explore the areas that are a little further out from central Avalon, which are up in the hills – which you can *technically* walk to, but it’s much easier just to drive a golf cart to!

catalina island travel tips

However, since Avalon only covers one square mile, you can easily walk to get around to all the best Catalina Island attractions. This will also allow you to really take in all of the beauty of the island (trust me, you’ll stop for tons of photos!).

Bicycling is also a great way to get around the island – you can even bring your own on the ferry (however, it does require you to reserve space on the boat). Otherwise, there are many companies on the island who offer bike rentals, including electric bikes.

Do note that you need a permit through the Catalina Island Conservancy to hike or bike in the interior areas of the island.

catalina island travel tips

The Avalon Transit serves the city, and makes stops at various points of interest. Currently, service is offered between 8am-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The fare is $2 per ride.

There is no ride share service, but taxis are available. Keep in mind that fares are on the high side due to the high cost of fuel on the island.

If you need to get to the interior areas of the island, you can take the Wildlands Express shuttle from the Catalina Island Conservancy, or hire a private interior shuttle .

You can also get around to other areas of the island via boat. The Cyclone boat takes visitors from Avalon to Two Harbors. Other options include chartering a private boat, or using your own vessel.

catalina island travel tips

How Long Should You Spend on Catalina Island?

Catalina Island is a popular day trip destination from Los Angeles or Orange County (as well as a port destination for cruises), and you can definitely see the main highlights in the day.

However, to fully take advantage of what to do on Catalina Island, I suggest staying at least overnight and even longer. Catalina Island makes the perfect weekend getaway ! We stayed two nights and it was the perfect amount of time to see all the main sights, take a few tours, and have some time left over to relax.

You’ll also get to experience the peace and tranquility in the mornings and evenings, when there are no day trippers or cruise ship passengers aren’t on the island and you almost feel like you have it to yourself.

If you wish to do some hiking or explore the interior of the island, you will need at least a few days. If you want to backpack the Trans Catalina Trail, you will need at least a full week.

Want to plan an amazing weekend getaway to Catalina Island? Here’s the perfect itinerary !

What to Pack for Catalina Island

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes : You’ll probably be doing a lot of walking around the island! Allbirds are my new favorite travel shoe – you’ll stay comfortable all day! If you want to look cute and be comfortable, Rothy’s are my go-to as well.
  • Flip Flops or Sandals : For the beach. A pair of Rainbows are super comfy!
  • Cardigan or light jacket : The evenings get breezy here. I just threw on a denim jacket during my stay. You can also bring this packable windbreaker, which you can fold up and throw into your bag! For cooler days, a packable puffer is ideal.
  • Hat : The sun can get super bright, so I highly recommend having a hat. A straw hat like this one not only keeps the sun out of your eyes (and is perfect for the beach), but also looks cute in photos ( this one is another favorite for photos!), but a standard baseball cap will also do.
  • Sunglasses : I love the polarized pairs from Goodr .
  • Beach Tote : like this one
  • Sunscreen : Slather on a reef-safe sunscree n that will also protect marine life on the island. This one is also my favorite face sunscreen (and this one is great as top off).
  • Battery pack :  I never travel anywhere without this one . It can charge up to five times on one full charge!
  • Camera : Sure, a phone camera will do – but you can really capture the island’s beauty with my favorite travel camera .
  • Reusable water bottle : I have this one on me at all times.
  • Motion sickness meds or bands : For the boat ride over, if you’re prone to seasickness.

catalina island travel tips

Is Catalina Island expensive?

Yes, keeping it real here – things are a bit more expensive on Catalina Island than it is on the mainland. It is an island after all.

However, just keep this in mind – you still get a taste for the island life and can enjoy those stunning Mediterranean-style views – for a fraction of the cost of an expensive plane ticket!

If you’re looking to visit but are on a budget, consider visiting during the offseason or midweek. For example, the island offers a number of midweek boat + hotel packages that offer a hefty discount off ferry fare and accommodations in the winter months – you can save up to 50% off! You can see all available options here .

Another way to save money is to get food (and wine) at the grocery store. There are plenty of beautiful spots around the island (beaches, viewpoints, etc) that are perfect for picnicking!

More Catalina Island Travel Tips

  • While you will generally have cell service in downtown Avalon, it is kind of spotty and gets pretty unreliable the further inland you go. To help you navigate around the island, I highly recommend downloading offline maps before you arrive.
  • Because of older filtration systems, the tap water on the island is not the greatest. Most locals don’t drink the tap water, and restaurants only serve bottled water. I would recommend bringing or buying some water and then filling up your reusable water bottle .

Where to Stay on Catalina Island

During our stay on Catalina Island, we stayed at the Hotel Atwater . The property is conveniently situated a block away from the beach, right in the heart of Avalon and close to some of the best things to do in Catalina Island.

catalina island travel tips

Hotel Atwater was originally opened in 1920, and was the first hotel built under the direction of William Wrigley Jr. after he purchased the island. It is named after Helen Atwater Wrigley, the wife of Phillip Knight Wrigley, William’s son. It was once a popular getaway spot for Los Angeles’s and Hollywood’s elite. The historic hotel still has symbols of the Wrigley family’s legacy.

Hotel Atwater was renovated in 2019, and the entire property still looked super new and sparkling clean! The hotel has a tropical chic meets Art Deco theme, echoing elements of its Hollywood glamour past and the island life. I couldn’t get over the decor here – I immediately wanted to move in (and was sad to leave since I basically made myself at home).

catalina island travel tips

Some amenities include welcome bottles of champagne (waiting right in our fridge when we arrived – such a fun way to kick off a getaway!), as well as a $20 dining credit redeemable at the Descanso Beach Club or Bistro at the Atwater (perfect for a quick breakfast and some coffee), 15% off activities and tours from the Catalina Island Company, complimentary beach towel rentals, free wifi, and a digital tablet concierge.

Looking for a bit of luxury? Consider staying at Mt. Ada . This is at the former home of William Wrigley Jr. and his wife Ada. The luxury property features six guest rooms, all featuring spectacular views of Avalon. Staying at the Mt. Ada is the only way to see the property!

There are many amenities included, including a complimentary breakfast lunch, a wine and cheese plate, and complimentary snacks, soft drinks, and beer & wine; complimentary golf cart rentals; complimentary pickup from the boat terminal, helipad, or airport; and more.

Things to Do On Catalina Island

catalina island travel tips

Drive a golf cart around the island

This is one of the most popular things to do on Catalina Island – pretty much anyone I talked to said I needed to do this!

We rented a golf cart through Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals . Rentals are charged by hour – a four passenger cart is $60/hour, and a six passenger cart is $80/hour. There is also a $60 cash deposit required. Drivers must also be at least 25 years of age with a valid drivers license.

Renting a golf cart around the island is one of the best Catalina Island activities, especially if you are limited on time, because it will allow you to see all the highlights of the island in a short amount of time! Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals will give you a map and suggest a route when picking up the golf cart.

catalina island travel tips

The suggested route takes you along the water on Pebbly Beach Road, then up into the hills (called “the heights” of Avalon). You’ll have the opportunity to stop at the botanical gardens and Wrigley Memorial (highly recommended), and drive by several scenic lookout points, as well as the iconic Casino and Descanso Beach.

It takes about one hour to do the entire route without any stops, but I suggest renting the golf cart for two hours so you can stop for photos at the viewpoints and the botanical gardens.

You’ll get a map to help you navigate the route, but it can be a bit confusing at some points – so also download offline maps, just in case. Make sure you stay on the route and don’t make any wrong turns, as some roads are off limits to rental carts.

If you don’t want to drive your own golf cart, or you want some added commentary about the island, you can even take a fun private golf cart tour .

catalina island travel tips

Go on a bison expedition

This ended up being one of our favorite things to do in Catalina Island! Did you know that Catalina Island is home to a herd of approximately 150 bison?

The Bison Expedition takes you into the rugged interior of the island to try to spot some of the herd. Along the way, you’ll encounter some incredible ocean views, see some of the wildlife and plant life in the area, as well as get a peek of the Airport in the Sky, situated 1602 feet above sea level.

You’ll go on a thrilling ride in an open-air Hummer, across windy, hilly dirt roads – it really does feel like an expedition! It was almost like being on the real-life Indiana Jones ride (one of my favorites at Disneyland !), and it was SO much fun! (Note: This tour is not recommended for pregnant individuals or those with neck or back problems.)

catalina island travel tips

So how did the bison even end up on the island? The herd that remains on the island today are descendants of a herd left on the island from a movie shoot gone wrong in the 1920s. At one point in time, over 600 bison grazed the island’s interior; today, only about 150 remain.

We were able to spot several bison during our expedition and it was so exciting! We were even able to see a herd off in the distance in the hills. Being able to observe these creatures in their natural habitat was such a unique experience, and I highly recommend it as one of the best things to do on Catalina Island!

One of the best things to do on Catalina Island is to chill at the beach, and what better way to do it than at a beach club? Located just past the Casino, the Descanso Beach Club is home to the island’s only beachside bar and restaurant, as well as one of the last publicly accessible private beaches in California.

You can opt to enjoy a beachside meal and drinks at a table in the restaurant. If you want to hang out in the sun and relax, you can also rent a chaise lounger (highly recommended!), which starts at $60/day on the weekends or $75/day during the week (you must be booked in pairs). Complimentary bottled water and beach towels are included in the rate.

Beach cabanas are also available, which start at $325/day on weekends, or $280/day during the week. You can even upgrade to the Presidential Cabanas or Hillside Cabanas, which come with a beach butler, as well as complimentary smoothies and other amenities.

We were able to rent the chaise loungers and it totally reminded me of lounging at a resort in Cancun or Puerto Vallarta . It was so nice to be able to hang out and relax for a few hours – plus the food and cocktails were absolutely delicious!

catalina island travel tips

This is the perfect spot to enjoy a fruity, frozen cocktail or to try out the island’s famous Buffalo Milk. My boyfriend had a Mai Tai and said it was the best he’s ever had! For food, we ordered a poke bowl and some ceviche and both were amazing as well.

Go ziplining across Descanso Canyon

The Zip Line Eco Tour is one of the most thrilling things to do on Catalina Island! It takes you up to the ridge top 600 feet high in Descanso Canyon. From there, you will speed down five zip lines back to the Descanso Beach Club.

This was such an exhilarating experience! The zip lines reach speeds up to 35 miles per hour, and stretch up to 1000 feet long. It was so fun to zoom by over some stunning views of the ocean and the casino, and this is such a cool way to see the island’s flora and fauna as well. The guides were also super fun, friendly and helpful, which truly made this one of our favorite Catalina Island activities.

Seriously y’all, this was SO. MUCH. FUN!

For a unique experience, try booking the last slot of the day – you’ll get to see these stunning views at sunset which I’m sure makes this even more epic.

catalina island travel tips

Admire the amazing views

There are no shortage of incredible vistas around the island, and stopping at a few viewpoints is one of the best things to do in Avalon. You’ll find a number of scenic overlooks around Avalon and its surrounding areas, overlooking the downtown area, waterfront, and the Casino.

You will oooh- and aaah- over the views of the sparkling aquamarine waters in the bay, as well as the colorful buildings nestled within the hills of Avalon. You’ll swear you’ve teleported yourself to Italy or Greece!

Some of the best scenic overlooks are below:

  • Tremont Scenic Overlook : You’ll find incredible views of Avalon Bay here. Country Club Dr, Avalon, CA 90704
  • Buena Vista Point Scenic Overlook : The name just about sums it up – this is arguably the best view on the island! Amazing views of the harbor, the clifftop homes, and waterfront. Wrigley Rd, Avalon, CA 90704
  • Three Palms Scenic Overlook : Breathtaking views of the Avalon Bay, hillside, and Casino. Wrigley Rd, Avalon, CA 90704
  • Ocean Scenic Overlook : Amazing views of the blue waters. Wrigley Rd, Avalon, CA 90704
  • Catalina Chimes Tower: Scenic views of Avalon Bay and downtown. Chimes Tower Rd, Avalon, CA 90704

If you plan on renting a golf cart, the suggested route should already include these stops. If you don’t wish to (or can’t) rent a golf cart, an alternative is to book the Discover Avalon Tour . We did both and enjoyed the commentary on the tour of the history of Catalina Island, but enjoyed having flexibility to make stops and take photos with the golf cart. If you are looking for a good workout, you can hike to them as well.

These viewpoints are also great spots for a sunset picnic!

Visit the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens

Located about a 30 minute walk from downtown Avalon (or a quick golf cart ride away), the 37.85 acre Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens . The garden was originally the idea of Ada Wrigley, who supervised Pasadena horticulturalist Albert Conrad, who planted the garden’s original collection in 1935.

In 1960, the garden shifted its focus to primarily showcase the California island endemic plants. These plants are exclusive to California’s Channel Island, and many of them are on the endangered species list. The garden is especially focused on six Catalina endemics, including the rare Catalina Ironwood.

The garden is also the starting point for the Garden to Sky trail, one of the island’s most popular hikes.

catalina island travel tips

The centerpiece of the botanical gardens is the Wrigley Memorial, dedicated to William Wrigley Jr., who is largely credited with playing an instrumental role in the history and the development of the island.

The stunning memorial was designed by the architectural firm Bennett, Parsons and Frost, who also designed Chicago’s Buckingham Fountain. It was built using primarily materials that were sourced on the island and was adorned with tiles made by local artisans. I enjoyed admiring all of the architectural details on the memorial!

From here, you can see incredible views of the gardens  and Avalon Bay – which makes the uphill climb and stairs totally worth it!

1400 Avalon Cyn Rd, Avalon, CA 90704

Visit the Catalina Museum

The Catalina Island Museum showcases interesting and engaging exhibits focusing on 7000 years of the island’s history. The exhibits depict life on the life and its inhabitants, from the natives who originally lived on the island, to the rich-and-famous who once called the island home.

The museum displays a large collection of Catalina pottery made between 1927-1937, 10,000 photographs depicting island life, boat models, sport fishing items, and Tongva and Gabrielino artifacts uncovered from archaeological digs on the island.

Stroll down the waterfront

Avalon’s waterfront is dotted with charming shops, beachside restaurants, and plenty of scenic views. Be sure to set aside a couple of hours to take a walk along the waterfront. Yes, it’s touristy but it’s still one of the best things to do in Avalon!

catalina island travel tips

Start from Pebbly Beach (and admire the crystal clear waters) and continue along the water towards the casino. Check out what’s going on at the Green Pleasure Pier, where you can also find the island’s visitor’s center, as well as several tour operators, water activities, and diving companies. Continue down Via Casino (and snap a photo with one of the arches in the tunnel – it will frame the Casino perfectly!).

We strolled down the waterfront around sunset time and the views were so pretty (especially with the Casino as a backdrop) – the waters were so calm and it felt so peaceful!

catalina island travel tips

Check out the iconic casino

The Catalina Casino is not only THE most recognizable landmark on the island, it’s also steeped in history. Did you know that the Casino was not built as a place for gambling? In fact, the original Italian meaning is “a little house.” Specifically, it means a gathering place for social amusements.

The Casino was built in 1929, ten year after William Wrigley Jr. purchased the island. It was the centerpiece of his vision for the island to be a “playground for all” in paradise. In its heyday, the Casino was a hub of nightlife, and millions made the journey dinner, movie, and dancing here. The highlight of the Casino is the magnificent ballroom, which is large enough to accommodate 4,000 people (or, the entire population of Avalon).

catalina island travel tips

Today, the Casino has been brilliantly restored and still stands as an ode to the glitz and glamour of the island’s history. Tours of the Casino are offered and I highly recommend doing one to get a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most famous Catalina Island attractions and to learn more about the history of the island.

You’ll also get to see the stunning movie theater (the first of its kind built specifically for the advent of talking movies!), the grand ballroom, and the outside balcony, which overlooks the harbor and has some beautiful views.

At the very least, I highly suggest just admiring the Casino from the outside. The Art Deco details on the facade are incredible (and award-winning)! There are also some beautiful murals on the outside foyer that are worth a look as well.

Go on a parasailing adventure

Taking a parasailing tour is one of the most exciting Catalina Island activities! You’ll soar high above the island at heights up to 800 feet, giving you a unique birds-eye perspective of Catalina.

We took a parasailing flight from California Parasail , and loved our experience so much! The tour lasts about an hour, with around 10 participants. In the warmer months, you also have the option of being able to dip your toes into the water upon landing.

We spent about 10 minutes up in the air, and were surprised at how calm it was up there! It was a bit breezy on the ground that day, so we were afraid that it was going to be absolutely freezing up in the sky, but it was actually much more pleasant up there! We were surprised that we could have an actual conversation at a normal volume haha.

The views of the island, the harbor, and downtown Avalon were so incredible from high up in the air, and made for an unforgettable experience! I highly recommend parasailing as one of the must-do Catalina Island activities!

Discover the marine life

Catalina Island’s crystal clear waters host a variety of marine life. The island has a number of marine protected areas that are home to abundant marine life in all forms.

The island is a favorite of scuba divers, who consider it to be the best spot for diving in Southern California. There are plenty of diving opportunities for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. It is also a popular spot to get certified. The Casino Point Dive Park, just past the Casino, is a popular spot for diving and the home of several diving outfitters. Learn more about diving on the island.

Catalina Island is also considered to be one of the best places to go snorkeling. You’ll find plenty of snorkeling vendors all over the island, especially on the Green Please Pier. Both guided and self-guided tours are available, as well as equipment rental (or you can bring your own) Some of the best snorkeling opportunities are at Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve, Casino Point Dive Park and the waters around Descanso Beach. Learn more about snorkeling on the island.

This is something we would love to do the next time we return to the island – we were considering snorkeling, but the waters were still freezing cold during our stay!

Explore the waters by kayaking or SUPing

Catalina Island has 52 miles of pristine coastline, and one of the best ways to explore it is by kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. The island is full of scenic coastline, hidden coves, and vibrant marine life.

You’ll find plenty of kayaking and SUPing providers along the waterfront in Avalon.

If you’ve been around here a while, you will know that I’m awful at rowing activities (see: that time in Tempe, AZ ), but if I were to kayak somewhere it would definitely be on Catalina!

More information about kayaking and SUPing around the island.

catalina island travel tips

Go on a boat tour

Going on a boat tour is another fantastic activity to discover the marine life on the island.

You have a few options – the first of which is an underwater submarine expedition , in which you will board a semi-submersible vessel. It’s one of the only boats of its kind in the county, and allows you to get up close and personal with the island’s marine creatures, including the bright orange Garibaldi fish, spotted calico, sea urchins, rock fish, bat rays, kelp, and more that live underneath the ocean’s surface.

You can also take a glass bottomed boat tour, which gives you a peek into the creatures that live under the waters of Lover’s Cove. You’l get to see a variety of colorful fish and marine life that call Catalina Island home, and why it’s considered to be one of the healthiest marine environments in the world.

Play a round of mini golf at the Golf Gardens

You might be thinking, “why on earth are you telling me to mini golf? That’s cheesy AF!” Why yes, dear reader – that was my initial thought too. Add to the fact that I’m AWFUL at mini golf (Like…wtf is par? It takes me at 5x the number of strokes) and EVERYONE makes fun of me every time we go

But folks, the Golf Gardens isn’t your average miniature golf course. There are no tacky clowns or windmills here. In fact, it’s known as one of the best and most beautiful courses in the world amongst miniature golf enthusiasts.

catalina island travel tips

Mini golfing at the Golf Gardens is sort of like golfing in a garden oasis. There is lush plant life everywhere around you. There are signs at each hole that point out the flora ad fauna, and give you an insight into the island’s history. Seriously, it is beautiful and unlike any other miniature golf course you’ll see and a fun way to spend a couple hours!

I’m still terrible at mini golf, but I still found this to be one of the most fun things to do in Avalon!

Try Buffalo Milk

No, not actually milk from a buffalo! A Buffalo Milk is basically the official cocktail of the island, made out of Creme de Cocoa, Kahlua, Creme de Banana, vodka, and cream . It’s kind of like a banana smoothie and I loved it!

Pretty much any restaurant and bar on the island has Buffalo Milk on their menu, but you can find the best at the Buffalo Nickel . It’s located about a mile away from downtown Avalon, next to the helipad, but you can call them for a shuttle to take you to and from town (or you can walk). It’s where the locals hang out, and has a really fun, quirky vibe.

catalina island travel tips

Take an interior tour

While there are plenty of things to do in Avalon, it only takes up a tiny fraction of the land on the island. The island’s rugged interior offers a completely different side to Catalina, and I highly suggest you take at least a bit of time to explore it!

While you can hike or bike around the island, the best way to explore Catalina’s interior is to take an interior tour . This two-hour tour will take you 10 miles into the island’s protected interior, and make stops at the Airport in the Sky, the Nature Center, and even peers down at one of Catalina’s original Native American gathering sites.

You’ll even have the opportunity to spot some of the wildlife that call Catalina Island home – if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the island’s bison or foxes.

Along the way, you’ll catch some stunning views as well!

catalina island travel tips

Catalina Island boasts 165 miles of trails just waiting to be explored. The island has hiking opportunities ranging in difficulty, suiting all ages and ability levels, making hiking one of the best things to do in Catalina Island.

You’ll find dozens of trails, whether you are looking for a short, easy hike, or a multi-day backpacking adventure. If you are interested in the latter, the Trans-Catalina Trail traverses the rugged interior of the island, covering 38.5 miles with camping stops at pristine beaches. On average, it takes about four days to complete the hike. Permits are required – here’s how to get one .

If you are looking for something much shorter, you’ll find plenty of opportunities around the island. There are ample hiking opportunities to explore the island’s interior here’s all of the hikes on the island ), but you can find several hikes in Avalon as well (h ere’s a hiking guide and map ).

One of the trails that I would love to do on a future visit to the island is the Garden to Sky trail, which starts at the botanical garden in Avalon, and stretches and is one of the most popular hikes on Catalina Island. You’ll find several trail options for the hike, at varying lengths and difficulty levels. The hike allows you to see two different sides of the island, and is an ideal option for day trippers.

catalina island travel tips

Another hike that is on my bucket list is the Airport Loop trail, which allows you to explore the area surrounding the island’s “Airport in the Sky.” You’ll find incredible summit views as well as a glimpse of cultural history on this trail.

Do note that for hikes in the island’s interior, a permit must be secured through the Catalina Conservancy. Permits are free of charge, and can be obtained from the Trailhead visitor center (on Crescent Ave. in Avalon), Nature Center, Airport in the Sky, and Two Harbors Visitor Information Center, or online . If your hike’s trailhead is in the interior and you don’t want to hike/bike there, you can also take the Wildlands Express shuttle .

More information about hiking on Catalina Island .

Take a trip to Two Harbors

While there are plenty of amazing things to do in Avalon, taking a trip to Two Harbors gives you a different glimpse into the island.

Located on Catalina’s west end, Two Harbors is a small village that sits on a narrow piece of land that separates the leeward and seaside side of the island. Two Harbors has a cozy, quiet vibe, showing visitors a different side of the island than the touristy Avalon.

On Two Harbors, you will find a beach club, a restaurant, a lodge, and a general store. It is also a haven for outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, kayaking, snorkeling, diving, and more. You’ll also find rugged natural beauty here, with turquoise waters and rolling green hills.

You can visit Two Harbors from Avalon via the Cyclone boa t, which provides regular service during the island’s tourist season (May through October). Unfortunately, the Cyclone was not running during our visit, but it is at the top of my list for next time!

Where to Eat and Drink on Catalina Island

Descanso beach club.

I mentioned Descanso Beach Club earlier, but felt it should get another mention here. You can’t go wrong with delicious food and drinks right on the beach! Even if you don’t want to hang out on the chaise loungers or a cabana, it’s still an awesome spot to stop for lunch.

We ordered the poke bowl and ceviche and both were super fresh and tasty. You must also grab a fruity cocktail here – try a buffalo milk, the official drink of the island! It almost tastes like a boozy banana milkshake.

catalina island travel tips

The Naughty Fox

Located in the Bellanca Hotel, the Naughty Fox is one of Avalon’s newest additions and offers fresh chef-driven cuisine paired with delicious cocktails. We loved the Naughty Fox so much that we ended up stopping in twice (once for dinner, and then dessert and cocktails the second night)!

You must try the ahi tuna poke nachos here, which are served up on crisped wonton chips, for a fun twist!

Bluewater Avalon

The Bluewater is part of a local chain, but the Avalon location is one of its best. They’re known for serving delicious, fresh seafood dishes, and for the view you get from the outdoor patio, overlooking Avalon’s harbor and the Casino.

We ordered the clam chowder, steamed shellfish in white wine, butter, and garlic sauce, and the chipotle blackened swordfish – everything was delicious and we really loved taking in the view (even at night) as we enjoyed dinner!

Luau Larry’s

Luau Larry’s is a super kitschy tiki bar, but it’s a local favorite and it has been around for ages. It’s also right next to the beach (and currently have outdoor seating right on the beach!).

The drink to order here is the Wiki Whacker, made with Cruzan aged light rum, Parrott brandy, pineapple/orange juice and grenadine. Everyone who orders one also gets a straw hat – it was funny walking around the island and seeing all the people with one on! (I had to make my boyfriend order one for the photo op, because I’m a good blogger like that lmao.)

NDMK Fish House

If you’re looking to eat fresh local seafood, look no further than NDMK Fish House . You’ll find a variety of seafood dishes and specialties here (everything from tacos, sushi, sandwiches, and more), many of which feature the catch of the day.

I had the fish and chips here with the catch of the day (which was halibut that day), and it was one of the best that I’ve ever had!

We also loved the sushi rolls here (especially the rainbow roll) as it’s made with some of the freshest fish you’ll find!

109 Clarissa Ave Box, Avalon, CA 90704

Antonio’s Pizzeria

Antonio’s Pizzeria actually has two locations: one on the waterfront more suited for a sit-down meal, and one on Sumner Avenue that is more of a grab and go spot (they do also have a few tables outside for dine-in).

We were in the mood for some pizza one night (as second dinner, because hey, eating is one of the best things to do on Catalina Island), and Antonio’s totally hit the spot! The thin crust has the perfect crisp to it.

The Lobster Trap

A favorite of both locals and visitors alike, the Lobster Trap serves up delicious seafood dishes in a casual setting. It’s got the cutest storefront, painted with a colorful underwater scene.

With a name as “Lobster Trap,” obviously, the lobster is good here. We got the lobster roll and it was so, so good – super buttery and saucy!

The Sandtrap

The Sandtrap is located right next to the Catalina Golf Course (about a 10 minute walk from the center of town), and is a great spot to stop for a bit away from the hustle and bustle of the main part of Avalon.

Highly recommend coming for happy hour (2pm-close) – they have $2 tacos, $2 beers, and $5 margaritas. The tacos were super tasty, and so were the margs!

Maggie’s Blue Rose

You’ll find classic and elevated Mexican dishes, served in an eclectic environment at Maggie’s Blue Rose .

We loved the duck mole enchiladas and crab + corn empanadas here! Their margaritas are also supposed to be the best on the island.

417 Crescent Ave, Avalon, CA 90704

Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co.

The Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co . is one of the of the best spots on the island if you need your caffeine fix bright and early! There’s always a line out of the door here, and for good reason. I didn’t get to try the cookies here (even though I fully intended to because cookie is in the name), but the breakfast burrito was super tasty!

What an awesome post! Saving for our Cali road trip!

Such an informative article! I've been all over California (actually visited all counties in California), yet I've never made it out to Catalina. Maybe this summer!

Catalina Island looks like such a dreamy destination! It reminds me of the coastline in Spain or Italy, but i's just a short trip from where I live in Phoenix. I'm seriously considering visiting soon! Thanks for this awesome guide.

7 Tips for Visiting Catalina Island on a Budget

Catalina Island was well known as a celebrity hot spot back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, and today as a top luxury summer vacation destination for Southern California. Between the amazing restaurants, wide variety of activities, and 4-star hotels, visiting Catalina Island can become expensive. But never fear, here are our tips for for visiting Catalina Island on a budget!

Tip #1: Visit during the off-season: November to March

Summer is a busy time for Catalina Island tourism. For lower hotel rates, schedule your trip for between November and March. You may find yourself getting a hotel room for 50% less than it would be during the summer season.

Tip #2: Skip the golf cart and opt for the Garibaldi bus

Golf cart rental Catalina Island - Palm Trees and Pellegrino California travel tips

Renting a gold cart to get around Catalina Island seems like a no brainer, but I wouldn’t recommend it as your main form of transportation. Not only does it usually run ~$100 for 2 hours, there is a limit on how long you can rent the cart.

If you’re trying to visit Catalina Island on a budget, opt for the Garibaldi bus instead and only spend $5 per day! PS: I particularly love this as you’re not as rushed to see the different attractions and can go at your own pace.

Tip #3: Visit during the week (and get a deal on Groupon)

Ferry to Catalina Island - Palm Trees and Pellegrino California travel tips

Save on everything from the boat trip to restaurants by browsing Groupon offers. Right now, you can grab a round trip ride on the The Catalina Flyer for just $44. However, parking for this boat service in Newport Beach is fairly expensive at $27 per day, so plan accordingly. Prices are also cheaper during the week if you are able to make it work with your schedule.

Tip #4: Plan a day trip instead of a weekend getaway

Women in red and white gingham bathing suit sitting on beach holding a cocktail drink. Tips for Visiting Catalina Island on a Budget - Palm Trees and Pellegrino California travel tips

If you live in the Los Angeles area, save money and visit Catalina Island as a day trip. You can still enjoy a full day of activities by catching the earliest scheduled boat ride the island and returning on the last. Check out our Catalina Island weekend or day trip itinerary blog post for activities options!

Tip #5: Shop your hotel options and pay attention to the amenities

Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel Catalina Island - Palm Trees and Pellegrino California travel tips

Different hotels on Catalina Island have different amenities and offerings. For example some include breakfast, others provide dining credits, beach towels, etc. Decide what amenities you could live without and you may be able to save money.

Tip #6: Get 30-40% off tours during the off-season

Catalina Island Submarine Tour - Palm Trees and Pellegrino California travel tips

While you’re on the island, I highly recommend taking one of the tour options. If you are visiting during the off-season, tours can run about 30-40% cheaper than during the summer months.

One of our favorite activities on Catalina Island was the Catalina Island Undersea Sub Expedition . This 45-minute tour brings you face to face with the aquatic life of Lover’s Cove Marine Reserve, one of the healthiest marine environments in the world.

Pro Tip: Head to groupon before booking anything as they occasionally have discounted rates on tours!

Tip #7: Save on Catalina Island restaurants

Catalina Island Restaurants on a Budget - Palm Trees and Pellegrino California travel tips

Don’t miss happy hour while on Catalina Island! You can discover some amazing deals on food and drinks by visiting restaurants during off-peak times. While researching restaurants, check on your top contenders to see if they offer a Happy Hour menu. A few spots that we’ve liked:

  • Address : 306 Crescent Ave, Avalon, CA 90704

  • Address : 417 Crescent Ave, Avalon, CA 90704

If you like the most renovated, up to date amenities and spaces, this one is a fabulous pick. The Hotel Atwater has an elegant ambiance with ocean-inspired decor and vintage set-ups for the ultimate aesthetic vibes. It is one of the most renovated hotels on Catalina Island and it is evident to the eye as soon as you walk in. It is an excellent location if you’re interested in visiting the local restaurants and sightseeing.

Best Places to Eat

Trying local eateries can be one of the best ways to experience a new place! After a long day of exploring, you will need to check out a few of our favorite places to eat on Catalina. Enjoy.

Naughty Fox

The Naughty Fox is one of Catalina’s newest hot-spot restaurants! Boy, do they know how to present some amazing-looking entrees! It is located inside the Bellanca Hotel and overlooks the beautiful beach of Avalon. You will have a tough time choosing between their amazing menu options, so you better order it all and share it amongst the table. Our Editor-in-Chief, Erika De La Cruz enjoyed a delicious meal here accompanied by fantastic service from the servers and staff members. (Rumor has it that Zach Efron stopped in to eat recently too.)

A WEEKEND GUIDE TO CATALINA ISLAND, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

You might be surprised to know that located just off the coast of Southern California, only an hour by boat, lies an island paradise known as Santa Catalina Island.

Catalina Island is one of California’s eight-channel islands and is just 76 square miles in size. It’s known for its beautiful blue waters, spectacular dive spots, and small island vibe.

To help you make the most of your visit to the island, I’ve put together this weekend guide to Catalina.

Getting To Catalina Island

Just getting to Catalina Island is fun. Daily ferries to the main town of Avalon, or the more remote Two Harbors, operate daily from several California ports, including the following:

  • Dana Point Harbor
  • Long Beach Harbor
  • Newport Beach Harbor
  • San Pedro Harbor

Ferry rides typically take about an hour, and tickets cost approximately $40 each way for adults depending on the day of the week and the time of year you choose to visit. Be sure to get a window seat as you will likely spot pods of dolphins along the way or perhaps even a whale if you’re lucky.

Another way to get to Catalina is to splurge on a helicopter ride ! Helicopter rides are pricey, but you can fly from Long Beach to Catalina in just fifteen minutes!

Where To Stay On Catalina Island

From luxury hotels to private rentals and even campgrounds, there is no shortage of places to stay on Catalina Island. One of the best places to start is the Catalina Island Company .

Avalon is the main city and offers more options of accommodation than anywhere else on the island. Some of the most popular hotels and bed & breakfasts line Crescent Avenue, the main street surrounding Avalon Bay.

There are also a multitude of places to stay, lining the streets running perpendicular to Crescent. The hotels of Avalon are all quite charming, many painted in pastel shades or offering ocean views with outdoor fire pits.

The town of Two Harbors to the north also offers accommodations, although there aren’t quite as many options as Avalon.

Additionally, the island has designated campgrounds for those who want a more rugged island experience in Avalon and Two Harbors. There is primitive camping along the Trans-Catalina Trail at Black Jack and Parson’s Landing, which offer a unique experience in the secluded, more remote parts of the island.

Hotels and Vacation Rentals

Catalina Island has lots of accommodation options. If you are looking for budget-friendly accommodation here are 5 mid-range and budget Catalina Island hotels and villas :

  • The Avalon Hotel – A three-star hotel with 15 rooms, a rooftop terrace, a garden and is located close to Catalina Island Museum.
  • The Pavilion Hotel – The Pavilion Hotel offers 73 rooms ranging from kings rooms to rooms with two double beds. The three and a half star hotel is located close to the beach and just a one-minute walk from the Avalon Pier.
  • Hamilton Cove Villa – This historic condo has an open floor plan, with three bedrooms and stunning ocean views.
  • Ocean View Home – This three-bedroom home has been newly remodeled with modern amenities. It is within walking distance of the city center and even has a BBQ deck.
  • Hamilton Cove Villa 2 – Imagine bi-folding doors, an incredible view from the balcony and enough space to sleep six people in two bedrooms.

Getting Around

The primary mode of transportation on Catalina Island is by golf cart. Visitors are not allowed to drive cars on the island and most residents rely on golf carts to get around. Although you can walk to most places in Avalon, there are plenty of golf cart rental shops there.

Renting a cart for the day is a great way to get the lay of the land and an overview of Avalon in a short period of time. Just note that Catalina’s interior is off-limits to golf carts, so a 2-hour rental is usually plenty of time if you want to explore.

The city of Avalon also has a public bus service through the Avalon Transit as well as Dial-A-Ride for Seniors 55 and older and those with disabilities who require assistance.

Things To Do

Catalina aerial adventure.

The Catalina Aerial Adventure is also located near the Descanso Beach Club , which is basically an obstacle course nestled amongst the Eucalyptus trees high above with 5 different self-guided courses.

The courses include networks of rope ladders, balance beams, zip lines and bridges. There are 2 beginner courses, 2 intermediate courses and 1 advanced course, perfect for all skill levels.

Miniature Golf

Avalon’s  Golf Gardens Mini Golf is an 18-hole mini-golf course that’s been an island staple for fun for almost 50 years.

If you book a bison tour or a 4-wheel drive eco-tour, it’s a perfect way to end the day because the tours drop you off right next to the golf course.

Bison Expedition

Catalina Island is home to a herd of approximately 120-150 American Bison. The Catalina Island Conservancy works to protect these magnificent creatures and you can see them up close and personal by booking a two-hour, 4-wheel drive Bison Eco Tour.

Seeing them is quite incredible, plus this is a great way to get a glimpse of some of the more remote stretches of the island’s interior.

Descanso Beach Club

If you are looking to spend the day relaxing, toes in the sand, a drink in hand, then Avalon’s Descanso Beach Club is just what you’ve been waiting for. The Beach Club offers white sand beaches surrounded by palm trees swaying overhead in the ocean breeze.

From the center of town, stroll along the waterfront past the iconic Catalina Casino to reach this private beach open to the public. The Beach Club is the island’s only beachside restaurant and bar where you can sit and have cocktails right on the sand.

Whether you prefer an ocean-view table, a chaise lounge, or a private cabana rental, your food and drinks will be delivered right to you. The club also offers live DJs playing every Saturday during the summer and is open daily from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Experience the thrill of soaring above the tree line at heights up to 600 feet above sea level on a Zip Line Eco Tour.

There are five high-speed zip lines to choose from, some of which travel up to 40 miles per hour with a bird’s eye view of the island.

Catalina Rock Climbing Wall at Descanso

Located near the Zip Line Eco Tour base camp is a 32-foot rock climbing wall with 8 color-coded routes designed for skill levels ranging from novice to advanced.

Using a high-tech system that manages the lines, the wall offers novice climbers the ability to be lowered safely and slowly during descent, so it’s perfect for those with no experience and young kids. It also has more challenging routes up for those who are pros so that the experts won’t get bored.

Arcade & Mini Bowling

The  Three Palms Avalon Arcade offers games, prizes and big-screen TVs. It’s a fun spot to play or watch a game. It is also home to the Island Style Bowling, a mini-bowling alley with miniature bowling balls where you can order food, beer, and wine while you play.

Glass Bottom Boat Rides & Semi-Submarine Tour

Discover the underwater world of Catalina Island and its unique protected marine habitat by booking either a glass-bottom boat ride or a semi-submarine tour at Avalon Bay.

The glass-bottom boats offer windows into the world below full of colorful fish and sea life as you explore the Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve . Both rides are typically 45 minutes long.

A great way to spend the day, especially in the summer when water temperatures are an average of 70°F, is to go snorkeling. You can bring your own gear or rent it at several locations. There are also guided snorkeling tours that you can book.

Some of the best spots to observe an array of underwater marine life in Avalon are at Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve or the Casino Point Dive Park. You can also head to Two Harbors on the other side of the island to escape the crowds and explore one of the world’s best snorkel spots.

Wrigley Memorial And Botanical Gardens

The  Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens is located up Avalon Canyon, a 30-minute stroll from the center of town. The city bus can also take you to its entrance.

The grounds are beautiful and home to the popular Garden to Sky Trail. The monument itself is the centerpiece of the gardens honoring William Wrigley, Jr., an island resident who was probably best known for his chewing gum.

While standing at the top of the monument, you will have a bird’s eye view of the surrounding area and can even see the other side of the island in the distance.

Catalina Island Museum

The  Catalina Island Museum opened its doors in 1953 and was previously housed in the historic Catalina Casino. In 2016, it moved to its new home in the Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner Building.

There are over 18,000 square feet of exhibition space and its exterior design represents both the Spanish Mission style and the Art Deco influence of the 1920s. It houses exhibits related to the island’s unique history and is a fun place to explore.

Catalina Casino

The  Catalina Casino is one of the best-known historic landmarks on the island, often photographed for travel magazines, but it’s actually not a casino at all. The Catalina Casino is actually a large gathering facility with a movie theater and ballroom that used to house the Catalina Island Museum.

It’s a great spot for a leisurely afternoon stroll, especially if you are heading over to the Descanso Beach Club.

Have More Time?

If you have more than a weekend and are looking for something more adventurous than window shopping the palm tree-lined streets and sipping Pina Coladas in a cabana on white-sand beaches, then the Trans Catalina Trail  might be just what you’re looking for.

An astonishing 88% of Catalina Island is protected by the  Catalina Island Conservancy , including the Trans Catalina Trail that traverses the island, covering 38.5 miles. The trail typically takes 4 days to hike.

It takes you across the rugged island interior through the West End of the Island with camping stops next to beautiful, pristine beaches that are otherwise not easily accessible.

End of the conclusion paragraph: I hope you can see that Catalina Island is an incredible place to visit with so many diverse activities and sights. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation, exciting water sports, or just want some peace and quiet away from it all – this island has something for everyone!
