The TdeF Roadbook is now available for Velorooms if you’re interested in both English and French

The English version https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-JXKCFnb5gClOxPoRJhi9uNDKte4Ds_L

If that doesn’t work try http://velorooms.com/index.php?topic=2384.630

Lots of detailed info including routes, timings finish details etc.

You’ll need to scroll down with both of those links.

Thanks. Some bedtime reading there.

Or get it as an app from the usual places, user name = guest, password = roadbook2021

Blimey bigfoot, that’s amazing, cheers. 👍

I am being a bit dim here. What do you search for to get the roadbook in an app?

I presume the app referred to is this one… https://www.letour.fr/en/mobiles-apps

I can’t see the actual roadbook on this app. Some of the info is the same but the actual roadbook gives masses of detailed info…

The roadbook has its own app (publisher, on android at least: MAOGANI) – you need that username/password up there to use it.

The app is, imaginatively, called Tour de France Roadbook.

Cheers, spot on 🙂

Excellent, thanks 👍

How do you get a login.

Unable to use without a login, but I can not find a way to create a login

Here is the login information

Use “guest” for the login name and “roadbook2022” for the password. After logging in, I had to leave the “downloading” page displayed or the downloading would restart when I returned to the app. The app is decent for viewing information on the various stages, but the actual 2022 Roadbook pdf (search the web for this) has a lot more information.

Works great! Well made app

Works great, highly functional digital version of the Roadbook. For all those that are complaining about not being able to log in, just use the username/password provided in your hard copy of the Roadbook.

The Road Book 2022

"On the last day of The Tour de France, the Tour de France began"

Here is the ultimate, definitive chronicle of the 2022 cycling season.

The Road Book 2022 is a lovingly crafted hardback cycling book, diligently capturing the gripping 2022 season in intricate detail.

This veritable tome marks our 5th anniversary publishing the world's premier cycling almanack, and we think it's an edition worthy of such rarefied company.

With well over 900 pages of exclusive, unrivalled data and infographics from every professional race in the men's and women's calendar; including analysis of Poga č ar's immortal words "I'm dead, I'm gone!" and the first ever Tour de France Femmes.

This mighty book also includes unique personal insights from cycling experts and the riders who experienced it all. There is no greater way to reminisce over the 2022 season.

With a special introduction by our editor Ned Boulting, this 'end of year' summary is not available anywhere else, placing the entire cycling season into context, and offering a reference to enjoy for years to come.

This lovingly composed compendium truly is the premier method of reliving the remarkable, record breaking, monumental season of cycling that was 2022.

2022's edition brings together In the Winner's Words from cycling greats:

  • Lorena Wiebes
  • Matej Mohorič
  • Magnus Cort

Alongside insightful contributions from:

  • Ned Boulting
  • Peter Cossins
  • Giles Belbin
  • Edward Pickering
  • Herbie Sykes
  • Guillaume Martin
  • Andre Greipel
  • Isabel Best
  • Amy Lauren Jones
  • Katy Madgwick

Customer Reviews

Another fine, comprehensive and interesting edition. Only one gripe - the cost of postage to Australia. Barely worth buying, and that's only because it was on special (subtract one star ...)

Brilliant look back at 2022. Full of stats, results and excellent articles. Perfect for all racing cyclist fans.

For cycling race nerds this is as good as it gets. All the major and minor details for everything road cycling. Full of interesting tidbits that would probably not be known unless you worked with or were part of a cycling team(s).

In this day and age - where everything is just a mouse-click or two away - there is something so refreshing about getting the Road Book out.

The 'In their own Words', Ned's editorial introduction, and all the essays are brilliant in themselves - and well worth reading straight away.

But the beauty of this book lies elsewhere. Sure, I get the 2022 edition out from time to time. But invariably, when I'm reading about a rider or a race from a previous season, I find myself reverting to an earlier edition. And that is where the real fun begins! So often I find myself getting lost in a half-remembered race, and then going off on a half-dozen different tangents.

What a wonderful way to look back on a cycling season. And just like a good wine, each Rood Book will only become more important with the passing of time.

So much care and thought has gone into the Road Book; top quality production and paper.

A treasure! I can't recommend this book highly enough.

The famous Tour de France Roadbook

We often hear about how the riders at the Tour de France study “the Roadbook” to familiarise themselves with the twists and turns in final kilometres of a particular stage, or to identify which day may be “the one” to go for, but what exactly does the Tour de France Roadbook contain, who uses it, and how useful is it, really?

Published by ASO each year a few weeks before the Prologue and in several languages, the Roadbook is also known as the race “Bible”.

Tour de France Roadbook

Actually, it quickly becomes the indispensable tome for everyone working on the race, with a ton of information on the parcours, naturally, but also on the teams, mountain summits, the officials and their roles (handy when you need to know who to speak to to get your car accreditation upgraded if you want to follow a rider on a time trial stage, for example), race route signage, and so on. There’s even a guide to “good behaviour” for those folks working on the race.

The Roadbook isn’t unique to the Tour de France – all the major races publish their own version, but ASO’s Tour de France version is certainly the standard many others attempt to emulate.

It’s essentially in two parts, the “Introduction” and ‘The Stages”. The first section contains an overview of the main subjects for those working on the race with maps and guides, the second part describes each of the stages in more detail.

Tour de France Roadbook

Whilst the best source of information on a day-to-day basis is the daily sports paper l’Équipe, – which shows each day who’s abandoned the race on which team, who won what stage and who has the lead in the various Classifications, as well as the paper’s ranking (marks out of 10) for the major players in the preceding stage – the Roadbook remains the essential reference for everyone.

Stage Details

Each stage description has a wealth of vital information whatever job you’re doing on the race.

There’s just a little bit of tourisme blurb about the start and finishing towns for each stage in the Roadbook. In the past when picking up our ‘creds’ we were given a bundle of books and literature, including a hardback Guide Touristique , which provided lots of information about every start and finish town, and points of interest in-between. And you thought Dave Harmon just knew a lot about France.

Tour de France Roadbook

This is followed by a full-page detailed map showing the race route and the deviation , the off-race route that the team trucks should take to get to the finish without having to navigate those pesky mountain tops and spectators.

In our experience, this is the way a lot of journalists get to the finish too , and is the main reason why many of the words you read in magazines and newspapers are gleaned from the scribes watching the same TV pictures in the press room that you do at home – albeit they are able to chat to colleagues who may know interesting gossip and they can of course attend press conferences and interview riders and team staff as well.

Tour de France Roadbook

When we drive a stage along race route (our favourite way of getting from the start to the finish) we typically only see a handful of other press cars, usually from the radio or TV stations.

Often we’ll be passed by ASO Organisation, Skoda sponsors or other official cars ‘making good progress’, taking VIP guests for the trip of a lifetime along the closed roads at high speed, before stopping for a picnic lunch somewhere at the roadside, then waving cheerio as their guests board the helicopter for the journey to the finish.  We’ll write more about what’s in the VIP picnic hamper in another article!

Tour de France Roadbook

The map on the printed page is a useful high-level guide to which towns the parcours takes in, and when you use the Roadbook in .pdf format on the laptop you gain it’s true value – it’s tremendously helpful in identifying shortcuts and backroads to jump in front of the race – the map is in vector format and is scalable to a very detailed level. These days of course we just use the satnav for this kind of thing.

Tour de France Roadbook

Accès et Départ

These sections are vital if we are intending to grab breakfast at the Village Départ , or park in the right location in order to set off to drive the route just in front of race.  We’ll often aim to combine these two activities in the morning, usually because we’ll have arranged to interview some riders at their team buses or we’re on a mission to get a photo of a new prototype bike or wheel.

Tour de France Roadbook

As you can imagine, there are hundreds of cars all trying to pick a good spot in the correct car parking area to allow a quick exit and more often than not it’s chaotic.

If we are going into the Village Départ  it’s important to know the quickest way back to the car, for when we run out of time interviewing folk and drinking coffee and have to ‘bolt’ to the car to get away before the race rolls out. We’ll take you into the Village Départ this summer .

Profils du Jour

The Prolfil de l’Étape is the little saw-tooth diagram that you often see riders taping to their stem or top-tube. It’s some sort of barometer to how sore they will be tonight or how hard they will have to try to make the time cut.

Tour de France Roadbook

These days there are a couple of diagrams of every intermediate sprint as well, the Profil and Plan du Sprint Intermédiaire , showing the last few kilometres of run in, how flat or otherwise they are and what roundabouts need to be negotiated.

Itinéraire Horaire

This is the day’s schedule for the race, and includes three different plans depending upon the weather conditions or how tired the riders are; there’s timings for three different average speeds as well as the time the publicity caravan passes by.

This is all very handy when you’ve arranged to meet someone en route –  or when you have been ordered off the course by an over-zealous gendarme who doesn’t understand that the accreditation colour scheme on your car stickers means you’re actually entitled to be driving where you are, but now you’re jinking around the side-roads parallel to the race route in order to find a different barrier with a different policeman who knows his job better (or cares less) and will let you back onto the course, far enough in front of the race coming through to not get into trouble again.

Tour de France Roadbook

When we’re driving the race route and fall back less than 20 minutes in front of the leaders on the road, we’ll be encouraged to get a move on by the cops on the motorbikes. These guys are members of the Republican Guard; super-capable motorbike riders, firm and fair – but still gentlemen we don’t want to get on the wrong side of.

Hôtels des Équipes

In the good old days teams used to post a notice in the hotel lobby detailing which rooms the riders were in, so that everyone knew who was where. It seems odd that in this day and age, many teams still do this. You’re for the high-jump of course if you march straight up to a rider’s room – that would be very poor form, the best way of guaranteeing never getting an interview with that team again, and likely getting into trouble with ASO or the police as well.

Tour de France Roadbook

Whilst getting to the actual hotel that a team are staying at is made easy, managing to secure an interview with a rider generally isn’t; it comes down to your relationship with the team’s press officer and/or who you are working for.

Having covered quite a few Tours and attended enough races we’re in the position now where we’re known to the team staff and have a good rapport with quite a lot of the riders so usually we can get to talk to who we want – but when they want. At least we know where they live for three weeks of the year.

Download the Roadbook

You can often find someone posting a copy of it on  Scribd  or similar document sharing sites, but it’s pretty big – last year it was in nine parts, each between 21Mb and 31Mb.

Gruissan > Nimes

The sprinters may be heavily tipped for success when the race heads away from the coast near Narbonne, and maybe even when the riders pass over the Pic Saint-Loup. But the Mistral can blow fiercely at this time of year and could well upset the plans of the sprinters if those teams that feel at home when it’s windy end up scattering the peloton.

As the race homes in on the southern Alps, there will be no significant obstacles crossing the Drôme. The tests beyond that, though, are likely to encourage the formation of a large breakaway group, whose members will have a chance to shine, assuming they can deal with the climbs in the final 40 kilometres. We’ll get a clearer idea of this on the ascent of the Col Bayard, although the final selection should be made on the Col du Noyer (7.5km at 8.4%), with the final decision coming on the approach to the Superdévoluy ski station.

The altimeter drops temporarily, although the sprinters will still have to go right to their limits in order to claim the final bouquet within their grasp. That’s down to the fact that once the peloton has admired Lake Serre-Ponçon, the day’s attackers will have a few hills to exploit as they seek to maintain their lead. A strong puncheur might be able to go clear on the Côte de Saint-Apollinaire, and they’ll even more opportunity to do so on the Côte des Demoiselles Coiffées.

Embrun > Isola 2000

The menu for this ultra-mountain stage could well make you dizzy, but it’ll also whet the appetite of the very best climbers. Although the stage is less than 150km long, the riders will climb above 2,000 metres on three occasions, the biggest test the climb to the summit of La Bonette, the highest road in France at an altitude of 2,802 metres. Its 360-degree panorama is breath-taking.

The Paris-Nice regulars will be racing over familiar terrain, but that won’t make things any easier if the contest for the Yellow Jersey is still raging, particularly over such a short distance. Battle could commence as early as the climb to the Col de Braus. There will then be no respite on the climbs of the Cols de Turini, de la Colmiane and finally de la Couillole, the final ascent extending for 15.7km at an average gradient of 7.1%. We’ll all be holding our breath!

Everyone remembers the last occasion the Tour finished with a time trial, when Greg LeMond stripped the yellow jersey from the shoulders of Laurent Fignon on the Champs-Élysées in 1989, by just eight seconds. Thirty-five years on, we can but dream of a similar duel, involving two or three riders, an authentic athletic confrontation whose outcome would determine the final podium of the 111th edition, and the first to finish far from its familiar Parisian setting, the ultimate finale destined for Place Masséna, just a few pedal-strokes from the Promenade des Anglais.
