Jurassic park: 10 hidden details about the visitor center fans never noticed.

Every aspect of Jurassic Park is packed full of details and the visitor's center is no different. Here are 10 hidden things you may have missed.

The Jurassic Park   franchise seems to have some Tyrannosaurus-sized legs under it because decades after Steven Spielberg released the mega-blockbuster that started it all it's still going strong. No matter how many times fans watch  Jurassic Park,  the timeless classic provides something new like a freshly mined piece of amber.

More than just a location in the film, the Visitor Center is one of the most iconic set pieces in the entire franchise, and even appears in  Jurassic World  decades later. It's easy for fans to miss details about it amidst the running and the screaming of the main characters, but there are elements about it that deserve to be appreciated.

The Front Door Had Special Designs On It

Besides sparing no expense, Jurassic Park creator John Hammond wanted every care to be taken with the Visitor Center to make it beautiful as well as functional. As the first thing people saw when beginning their park experience, he wanted it to imbue them with wonder and excitement.

The front door to the building was very specifically constructed. The tinted door had a golden egg on the front with rays of light emanating from its center, representing the new life being given to the dinosaurs on Isla Nublar. All around it were engravings of dinosaur fossils, with the Tyrannosaurus Rex's skeleton spawning the top of it.

It Was Going To Be Replicated All Over The Globe

When Jurassic Park visionary John Hammond broke down the park to Dr. Grant and the other visitors over some sumptuous Chilean sea bass in the VIP lounge, corporate slides could be seen over their shoulders indicating Hammond's grand plans for its future.

Hammond postulated that the park would become more popular than sporting events or zoos, as seen by his graph slides, and be replicated all over the world (his first stop seemed to be Europe).

The Control Room Spared No Expense

Not only did John Hammond spare no expense with the creation of the Visitor's Center, but Steven Spielberg and his crew also spared nothing when it came to the props utilized in the Control Room, which was responsible for maintaining all the security programs in the park.

Tech-savvy viewers will note the vast array of computing equipment visible on the set, loaned out from companies such as Silicon Graphics, Apple, SuperMac (UMAX), and Thinking Machines. Production notes for the film, which reveal compelling facts about the franchise , state that in total, there was almost 1 million dollars in equipment just in props.

The Vehicle Garage Was In Its Basement

Visitors to the park had no choice but to go through the Visitor Center, and not just to watch Mr. DNA explain to them about dinosaur reproduction on Isla Nublar. The main vehicle garage could be found in its basement, where visitors had to pile into all-terrain vehicles and exit on the left side of the alcove to head towards the park entrance.

The Jeeps from the first, off-track excursion that Dr. Sattler, Dr. Malcolm, and Dr. Grant took were the same Jeeps encountered by Zach and Gray in Jurassic World . They find Jeep18, and Hammond's Jeep29 could be seen inoperable behind it.

The Merchandise Was Real

In the memorable scene where Dr. Sattler and John Hammond sat eating ice cream and debating the future of the park, the camera panned over the park merchandise on the shelves of the gift shop. In a stroke of marketing genius, all of the props found in the Visitor Center Gift Shop were real and could be purchased alongside the movie's release.

From the stuffed animals and the lunchboxes to the backpacks and the books, everything was for sale. Eagle-eyed fans will be able to spot  " The Making of Jurassic Park" book, which was a real book about the making of the movie  Jurassic Park,  written by Don Shay and Jody Duncan.

The Paintings Were Works Of Art

Behind the rampaging skeletons of the T Rex and Alamosaurus in the middle of the Visitor Center, there was a large mural that was blown up and placed on transparent windows. In the DVD extras for the film, fans learn that each 81/2 by 11-foot painting was created by lauded naturalist painter Doug Henderson, who was commissioned to depict life in the Jurassic period.

On either side of the doors, a Gallimimus could be seen, as well as several Brachiosaurs . The monochromatic mural in the restaurant/dining area was based on "Guernica", though instead of humans in the famous painting by Picasso, there are dinosaurs.

There Was A Hotel Connected To It

Fans of the novel by Michael Crichton will remember that after Ian Malcolm  was seriously injured, he was treated by Dr. Harding in his suite at the Safari Lodge, the spacious resort hotel that's connected to the Visitor Center. The Safari Lodge never appeared in the film except with one small reference.

When Lex was accessing the UNIX system for the park, she passed briefly over a file marked "Hotel". This was a reference to the Safari Lodge and indicated that Lex could have manipulated its security if she wanted to. A tiny picture of one of its rooms could be found in the film brochure for the park.

The Tour Guides Were Famous Voice Artists

In the Showcase Theater, where Dr. Grant and the other visitors watched Mr. DNA explain dinosaur genetics, the animated character was voiced by none other than Greg Burson, responsible for several famous Looney Tunes characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Pork Pig, and Elmer Fudd.

RELATED:  Jurassic Park: Dino-Human Hybrids & 9 Other Crazy Rejected Storylines For Sequels

As the vehicles pulled away from the Visitor Center, the dulcet tones of Richard Kiley could be heard wafting from the onboard stereo system. As Hammond so memorably stated, "The voice you’re now hearing is Richard Kiley. We spared no expense", referencing the two-time Tony Award winner for Best Actor in a Musical for  Redhead  (1959) and  Man of La Mancha  (1966), as well as numerous Emmys for his work in television.

It Was Bigger Than It Seemed

The action and suspense of  Jurassic Park  often made it difficult to keep track of where characters were, but they were all under traveling between the four different buildings that made up the Visitor Center. With its cylindrical shape, the center had several areas protruding from its main hall, each with a specific function.

Available to the public was the Showcase Theater, which put on the Mr. DNA tour, and the Cretaceous Cafe, which housed the restaurant. Just beside the dining area was the Visitor Center Kitchen and the Gallimimus Gift Shop. InGen personnel only were allowed into the Control Room for security, the Genetics Lab for dinosaur creation, the Cold Storage Room for embryos, and the Emergency Bunker underground.

Hammond Left The Freezer Open

During the exciting kitchen scene where velociraptors terrorized Lex and Tim, Tim made a daring maneuver by running to the walk-in freezer, where he quickly feinted entering in order to get a raptor to follow him. When it slipped on the ice, he made a break for it, successfully locking the raptor inside.

Why did the walk-in freezer door happen to be open at the exact moment that Tim was frantically hobbling towards it? Because John Hammond had gotten all of the ice cream out of it that was melting when the power was shut off and forgot to close the door behind him.

InGen’s Jurassic Park project is located a hundred miles from the coast of Costa Rica and began construction shortly after 1979 when  The Hammond Foundation leased Isla Nublar from the Costa Rican government for a biological preserve. Whether Sorna came first and then Nublar is unknown, but InGen’s dreams came crashing to a halt in August of 1989, as the Isla Nublar Incident transpired and forced the company into Chapter 11 bankruptcy . The status of the animal life on Isla Nublar is destroyed and is nothing more than an urban myth.

Isla Nublar Maps

Island outline and dimensions

We know that the island is 100 miles from the mainland, or maybe a little more. It has the shape of an inverted teardrop, bulging at the north, tapering at the south. It measures eight miles height and three miles at maximum width, in total some twenty-two square miles. There is no detailed description of the island’s outline, so I just took the Arnold’s satellite picture outline (from the movie) and stretched it in order to fit in Nublar’s proportions. I’ve preferred to take this outline from something related to Jurassic Park instead to create something from my imagination.

The Visitor Area

Most of the complexity of the map is inside the “Visitor Area”. We do know that there were only six divisions on the whole island. The “Visitor Area” was in the northern section and it contained structures such as the Heliport, the Visitor Center , the maintenance shed, the Hammond’s Bungalow, the Safari Lodge , the swimming pool, the tennis courts and the planting and shrubbery. There was also the East Garage, the holding pens , and the goat’s paddock .

The helicopter entered the island from the north. The heliport was over a hill and from this point the characters could see a flat area, with the Visitor Area’s buildings. As we know that the north portion of the island has the highest hills of the island and they came from north to south in the helicopter, I deduced that the flat area should be south of the Heliport. The Heliport is a short distance, by foot, from the Safari Lodge.

From the Heliport they walked thru a palm grove, an electric fence, along a swimming pool with smaller rocky pools and get to the Safari Lodge. The pool was in the lateral part of the building and the pool’s border was at ten or twelve feet from the building. The lodge had a special fence around it, only fifteen feet of the building.

The Visitor Center is near the Safari Lodge and is possible to see it from the Safari Lodges’ main entrance. In one of the sides of the Visitor Center there is a palm grove. This grove must be located northern of the Visitor Center because there is a path among a grove leading north, to some other buildings. The Visitor Center is west of the Safari Lodge, because when Gennaro was north of the Visitor Center, he ran “to the forest” and, hiding there, he knew the maintenance shed was somewhere to the east. The Visitor Center main entrance is towards south, because its back door was facing north.

From the Visitor Center, a path lead the characters to the north and they crossed a palm grove, saw the maintenance shed (mentioned as Power/Desalinization/Support in the chapter “Plans”), an animal enclosure with goats, a bamboo grove and found the holding pens.

The maintenance shed is the northern building of all, its entrance is in the east side and from there Dr. Alan Grant could see the Raptors running from the Safari Lodge towards the Visitor Center. That means that the area between the maintenance shed and the Safari Lodge is an open ground, without forests and groves.

We know that the Hammond’s Bungalow was in the island’s north portion, surrounded by palm trees. A path leads from the Visitor Center to the Bungalow, going north. When Hammond was attacked by the Procompsognathus , he was at a stream and “he could not be more than a hundred yards” from the Visitor Center and the Bungalow. So, the Bungalow is surrounded by palm trees, at north of the Visitor Center and the maximum distance between them is less than two hundred yards. Those information allowed me to locate the Bungalow inside that palm grove which is in the north side of the Visitor Center.

From the east garage we only know that is located “more than a mile” from the Visitor Center and is… east. Well, I have put it in a maintenance road, at approximately 1,1 miles from the Visitor Center.

The tennis courts are mentioned, but no one character actually see one in the novel. So its location is pure speculation. I believe that they should be near the pool, in the Safari Lodge. The pool and the tennis courts should be a recreation area in the island. In every tour enterprise the courts are expected to be near the resort’s hotel.

Main Road & Paddock Fences

There were only six divisions on the whole island, separated by electric fences and moats . The six divisions were: Visitor Area; Hypsilophodont Highlands; Triceratops Territory; Sauropod Swamp; Carnivore Country and Stegosaurus South. The “Velociraptor Valley” was to be built in the future. For the most part, the island was divided into big curving areas. The reserved area to the dinosaurs was twenty square miles.

The main road ran north-south, one section of the road was literally cut into the side of a cliff, above a river. In the Park, the tour road was raised up above ground level, so the characters could see over the fences. The tour started at the Visitor Center. A line of Toyota Land Cruisers came out of an underground garage under the Visitor Center. The road crossed a palm tree grove, where they saw electric fences . At the east side of the road, there were the Hypsilophodon and Othnielia paddock. After this paddock, the cars kept forward, going south. The next paddock is the Dilophosaurus area. It is located east of the road and north of the Aviary. From the road section cut at the side of the cliff they could see a Dilophosaurus at the river that was flowing close to the hills.

After the Dilophosaurus paddock, the road made a curve to the west and they saw the Triceratops paddock at the west side of the road. This paddock extends to the south, because at the point the T. rex attacks the car, there are high fences in both sides of the road.

Still going south, they saw the Tyrannosaurus rex paddock at the east side of the road. From the point that the cars stopped, looking south they could see the sauropods in the lake. The T. rex paddock must had a northwest-southeast direction, because from the point that Dr. Grant entered the paddock, after the T. rex attack, he walked directly north, crossing the paddock in the middle. So, at least one part of the road must be south of the T. rex paddock fence.

Continuing the tour, they saw the sauropods and hadrosaurs together, in the same paddock. This area is called “Sauropod Swamp”. Dr. Grant had entered this paddock after crossing the T. rex paddock from south to north, as the motion sensors sequence allow to prove. The only way to have this omnipresence is if the sauropod/hadrosaur area be located around the T. rex paddock, surrounding it in the south, east and north side. Another evidence that part of the sauropods paddock is north of the T. rex ’s area is the sight that Dr. Grant had when he arrived the island. From the Heliport he could see the sauropod’s neck. The distance between the Heliport and the northern “Sauropod Swamp” can be only 1.6 miles. If the paddock was restricted to the area south of the T. rex paddock, the distance would be too large, about 4.1 miles, and Dr. Grant would not be able to see the dinosaurs. Is easy to understand that those herbivores need the biggest grazing fields in the park, that’s probably the reason for them to have such a huge paddock. I’ve putted also a palm tree grove in the sauropod’s northern end, because Dr. Grant saw them among those tress. The presence of Microceratops in the river, at north and south of the Aviary is evidence that the Sauropod Swamp also surrounds the metallic dome).

The last paddock is in the island’s far south and has five square miles). The Stegosaurus lived in the island’s area with the most important volcanic activity. This is the only paddock in witch the main road came inside, because the characters get out of the car in order to see the sick Stegosaurus without jumping over any fencing. This point where they meet the sick dinosaur is near the ocean, because Ellie Sattler could hear it, and is in the southwest area of the paddock, because Dr. Harding says that the Stegosaurus use to graze mostly north and east of there. After left the sick Stegosaurus point, they went to a section of road that ran near the coastline, overlooking the beach and the ocean they turned back to north. This section must be at the east coast, because they saw the “ Anne B ” ship going to the mainland. Somehow they took the main road again and made the same trajectory back to the Visitor Center, but when they were in front of the T. rex paddock Dennis Nedry made his shutdown.

The island had fifty miles of twelve-foot-high fencing. This includes the twenty-two miles around the perimeter of the island, for preventing the dinosaurs to escape.

Maintenance Roads & Tunnels

In the Park there were roads, tunnels and buildings. There was a different road system for animal handlers and feed trucks.

From the Visitor Center, we know that there was a maintenance road towards east, the one that Nedry took in order to go to the East Dock. He was going to the East Dock, and get inside the Park by crossing an electric fence. From this point he believed the dock was not more than 1 mile and he would soon see the ocean in the left side of the road. So, the East Dock was relatively close to the Visitor Area, and there was a section of it heading south, near the beach. Another evidence that the East Dock is very near the Visitor Center is that Nedry thought that he could leave the Control Room and deliver the embryos in only three minutes, and after more three he would be back to the room.

But Nedry missed the road to the dock and get to the Dilophosaurus paddock, in a dead end, close to the river. I tried to make a road that could easily make him get the wrong direction only by missing one entrance. It’s hard to believe that he would make a series of mistakes to get to the Dilophosaurus paddock.

Another maintenance road starts at the south area of the island in the Sauropod Swamp, because at the beginning of it the characters saw the Apatosaurus . After a long time in this road, Dr. Harding and Ellie Sattler meet the Procompsognathus , at this point they were near the jungle river, it was off there somewhere to their left. Naturally, this road avoids the T. rex paddock, otherwise the animal handlers would be easily eaten… After meeting the Procompsognathus , they followed them for a wile in the road, and we know that those dinosaurs were after Nedry’s dead body, so I have made this section of the maintenance road heading to the Dilophosaurus paddock. After some time, Dr. Harding decides to get back to the Visitor Center and, as I made later, again the road avoid the Dilophosaurus paddock, because I believe no one would get in there if it was not really necessary. Then I just connected this road to that one that Nedry took, making possible to get to the Visitor Center without creating superfluous ways.

At north of the T. rex paddock there is one maintenance road leading east, to the Sauropod Maintenance Building. There is no more information about this road, so I just connected it to the other maintenance road in the opposite side of the river. There was also a paved road running straight down from the Sauropod Maintenance Building toward the lagoon.

I have made a small maintenance road from the tour road to the Dilophosaurus paddock, in order to create a way for Robert Muldoon to get to the field west of the river, where he “hunts” the T. rex . Some other small roads were created by me only to allow access to the maintenance buildings of each paddock.

The road to north dock is speculative. There is no description of this road in the novel. I think it should follow the river, because there was a path already constructed for the river to flow, so its easy to built the road along this path. I also created a small road (not described in the novel) from the back to the Safari Lodge to the road that leads the north dock. I think it would be needed for supplies to be transported from the dock to the back of the lodge.

There were two tunnels in the island. The first one “seemed to stretch away for miles” and connect the waterfall to the front of the Visitor Center. There is another tunnel at the  island’s southern end, between the underground structure and the beach and below the electrified fence. In this second tunnel, thru some curves, Grant could get to the beach.

At the north end of the island, the hills were highest, rising more than two thousand feet above the ocean. According to the topographic map that Dr. Grant saw in the trailer, there are hills at the center of the island and part of it were cut to fit the main road. The Aviary was also in area with hills, that’s why their paddock is called “Pterosaur Peak” and the visitors could not see it when they were in front of the Triceratops paddock.

The southern end of the island had more volcanic activity than the north so is expected that there are a lot of hills in this area. If they are not higher than the northern hills we can assume that this volcanic activity is not very old and in some time the southern volcanoes will grow to the same size as the northern hills. The visitors smelled the sulfur fumes of the volcanic steam when they entered in the road section near the beach.

There were flatlands in the island’s southern area. The Stegosaurus use to graze in the northern and eastern areas of its paddock. That is why I had made those two fields as the flatlands. Near the beach, the south end of the island is without volcanic activity, but with some hills, where the raptors had made their nest under a field of boulders.

The volcanic steam is also present in the main road a few moments before the cars stop at the T. rex paddock. So it must be some volcanoes near this point. I have located those volcanoes inside the Triceratops paddock, because when the visitors were in front of the T. rex paddock they could not see the herbivores in the west side of the road.

The Lake & River

In the island there was a long thin lake that appeared to be man-made, with concrete dams and barriers. It was in the center of the island and had two miles long and a little more than one hundred yards wide. It could be seen in the Sauropod Swamp, south and north.

Part of the lake is inside the T. rex paddock and the two carnivores drink its water. The younger the  T. rex  stays close to the water, near the southeast side of the lagoon. The older   T. rex preferred the fields northwest of the lagoon. In a bend, the lake narrowed into the river they had seen in the Dilophosaurus paddock.

The river is not natural, but a engineering work, because the water flow was turned off at some point in the story. Starting at the lake’s end, the river flows north right through the aviary through the Dilophosaurus paddock and on to within a half-mile of the Visitor Lodge. There was also a waterfall, falling north, after the Dilophosaurus paddock and then the river runs north. As the norther area has the highest mountains, the artificial river should flow into a ditch or cut in the mountains, so there insufficient gradient for water runoff. This cut is my interpretation, since at no time the book explains how the water flows in the northern portion of the island.

I have created two patterns of river, one close to the hills (at the Dilophosaurus paddock, for example) and another at the open flat grounds (at the Othnielia paddock, for example). They are completely different grounds and this changes the flowing of the river. The river near the hills had a lot of curves (those curves are described when Dr. Grant crossed the Dilophosaurus paddock, chapter “The aviary”).

Construction in the Park

The Park area was mostly open space, but there were some buildings in it. Each paddock had a few buildings, they were all concrete, with thick walls and usually located in out-of-the-way corners. Those are the only information given in the novel about the park’s maintenance buildings. So their disposition are highly speculative, with the exception of the Sauropod Maintenance Building.

The Aviary is an aluminum dome constructed as a pattern of geodesic struts with a quarter of a mile in diameter or more. It is located south of the Dilophosaurus paddock, surrounded by the Sauropod/Hadrosaurs/ Microceratops paddock.

The East Dock of the island it’s a small utility dock and it’s location was already discussed at the “Maintenance road” item. The North Dock is where the big supply boats arrive. It’s location is speculative, because no further information about its location as well as the maintenance road to get there is given. There were also some underground constructions in the islands southern end, with an entrance from the beach.

The “Velociraptor valley” “Les Gigantes” and the missing dinosaurs

There are some elements that are cited in the novel, but they do not appear in the map. I did not added them because they did not existed when the novel took place. The “Velociraptor Valley” is only a static TV channel at the Safari Lodge. The absence of the Velociraptor paddock explains why those carnivores where at the holding pens in the Visitor Area. The only empty location in the island to construct a new paddock is north of the Triceratops paddock. That’s why I created a river in that area, because if there is a valley, there must be a river. And I believe it extended itself near the Visitor Center, where John Hammond was attacked and killed by the Procompsognathus . I think that same river could be used as a water source for the herbivores of the Triceratops Country.

The same argument explains the absence of the Les Gigantes restaurant. It would be constructed somewhere between the Triceratops and the Dilophosaurus paddock. That is why I left an “empty” ground between the tour road and the Triceratops maintenance building. I think Les Gigantes could be constructed there.

And what could we say about the missing dinosaurs? We know that there were dinosaurs from the Styracosaurus and Euoplocephalus genera. But they are mentioned only in the computer’s counting procedure and did not appeared somewhere else in the novel. So, considering that they’re herbivores, that the Styracosaurus is similar to the Triceratops and that the Euoplocephalus could live in peace with those two other genera, I have decided to locate them in the Triceratops paddock. We must also consider that the characters never walked inside this paddock and we did not know what were there, with the exception of the Triceratops appearance at the tour. The Styracosaurus and Euoplocephalus could live behind the hills, near the T. rex paddock. So, it is probable that the missing dinosaurs were there, but this opinion must be considered speculative, because no one saw those dinosaurs there.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Image: LegendaryTrips.com

While 2015’s long awaited Jurassic World showed audiences what an up-and-running dinosaur theme park looks like, we still can't help but wonder how the original Jurassic Park might have transpired, had things have not gone awry back in 1993. Not that it’s impossible to imagine Hammond’s completed vision – you just need to fill in the gaps. Between the bestselling novel by the late Michael Crichton and everything we learn in the iconic movie adaptation, let’s do some digging and put together all the pieces to create an image of what guests would have expected for the original Isla Nublar resort upon opening.

1. The Visitor Center

Image: Jurassic Park Wiki

We already know from the film that guests would have first been treated to a tour of the Visitor Center, the island’s central hub sat at a lake edge amid a palm tree setting. As well as a walk-through of the building’s museum-style atrium where there stood a mighty T-Rex skeleton, the tour included Mr. DNA’s short film about the method used to extract dinosaur DNA from fossilized amber. While our heroes abandon their seats at the Showcase Theater to witness a raptor birth, guests would have been forbidden from entering any laboratory for contamination reasons. In Crichton’s novel, the group also enters other areas of the labs, including a DNA Extractions room and a raptor nursery. Either way, seeing raptor infants, whether newly born or being born, was indeed intended to be part of the tour. Although the same can't be said about the adult versions…

2. The Aviary

Image: Jurassic Park Wiki

We’ve now seen an Aviary twice in the films - the long abandoned one on Site B in 2001's  Jurassic Park III and the attraction on Isla Nublar in Jurassic World . In the novel, following the power outage and T-Rex escape, Dr. Alan Grant and the two Murphy children find they have drifted into the park’s Aviary where pterosaurs (cearadactyls, to be precise) proceed to attack them. Constructed with the accompanying Pteratops Lodge inside, the Aviary was certainly going to be part of the tour. In Jurassic Park III , the mountain-sized, metal-framed structure seems to cage only pteranadons, whereas in Jurassic World , the glass-domed version houses dozens of species of the flying reptiles. The book’s Aviary, however, is described as having been made with struts, and instead of glass there’s only thin mesh inside to contain its inhabitants. 3. The Jungle River Ride

Image: Jurassic Park Wiki

Now known for the legendary attraction at Universal Studios, the first ‘iteration’ of a Jungle River Ride appeared in the novel, which explored the island and passed through the Aviary (in Jurassic World , Cretaceous Cruise obviously takes inspiration, which sees river-bound guests admiring herds of hadrosaurs along majestic riverbanks). There’s also concept art for the original film depicting the book’s T-Rex chase through the river. Though the ride was yet to open within the continuity of the book, it still faced its own problems. It is said that employees are frequently attacked by pterosaurs, while dilophosaurs often spit their deadly venom at boats from the riverbanks. But it’s likely the Jungle River Ride would have opened anyway, seeing as InGen wasn’t even prepared to take raptors off the tour despite the death of a certain gatekeeper…

4. The Safari Lodge (& Pteratops Lodge)

Image: Jurassic Park Wiki

Jurassic Park’s resort hotel isn’t seen in the film, but it most definitely exists off-screen (unless guests are expected to sleep up trees...). Not only is it briefly mentioned, but it can also be seen in a UNIX System File under the label ‘Hotel’. In the novel, the characters check-in at the Safari Lodge, but after the power goes down, the raptors eventually escape and attempt to breach the hotel’s electrical barriers. As the Safari Lodge was pretty much up and running, there’s no doubt that this would have featured in the park a year later, along with Jurassic Tennis (which you can see on a background screen during the film’s dinner scene) and a swimming pool. As for the Aviary’s treetop Pteratops Lodge, despite the animals frequently attacking workmen, it probably would have opened anyway - you know, for consistency purposes.

5. The Jungle Explorer Tour

Image: Jurassic World Evolution Wiki

The island tour of Jurassic Park would have undoubtedly been the main attraction. The unmanned Jungle Explorers navigated the park along a fixed track, passing enclosures belonging to Dilophosaurus , Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex . Of course, there were more dinosaur exhibits than just these. As well as Brachiosaurus , Parasaurolophus and Gallimimus - which were available by gas jeep - other species intended for the tour were  Stegosaurus , Metriancanthosaurus and Herrerasaurus , which can be seen on the embryos Nedry steals. And then there’s the official movie map, which includes even more enclosures. Meanwhile, the novel offers more on the tour too: Hypsilophodont Highlands, Sauropod Swamp, Carnivore Country, Stegosaur South and Velociraptor Valley, as well as of course the Aviary, to name but a few.

Unless we get a retconned follow-up to Jurassic Park that ignores all the sequels, unfortunately we’ll never see the original park in all its glory. However, there are ways for you to experience a fully functional Jurassic Park, or, at the very least, areas we never got to see in the film, whether it’s through the popular video game Jurassic World: Evolution or the experiences at Universal Studios.

One Jurassic World Project Is Perfect For Exploring Jurassic Park's Biggest Mystery

The curiosities of Jurassic Park have taken audiences to fascinating places, but a Jurassic World project could explore a forgotten mystery.

  • Explore the lore and mysteries surrounding Jurassic Park: Europe and Japan in Jurassic World Evolution 2 through new DLC features.
  • Take a deeper dive into unused concepts for the franchise and unreleased spinoff parks planned by John Hammond.
  • Keep the Jurassic World Evolution series evolving with updates, DLC, and potential sequels to engage fans and continue exploring the franchise.

The Jurassic World series has raised and answered plenty of fascinating questions within the franchise, but one of its projects is perfect for exploring one of Jurassic Park ’s biggest mysteries. Jurassic World Evolution and the games beyond it were all about possibilities, as players assumed control of the titular theme park. However, the games allow audiences more than the opportunity to create the Mesozoic menagerie of their dreams by literally building upon the lore surrounding them. With Jurassic World Evolution 2 releasing new content and further revisiting the Jurassic Park series, it’s about time the game disembarks for a new adventure in some of the most curious places that never were.

Considered a spiritual successor to the cult classic Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis , 2018’s Jurassic World Evolution is a business management and zoo simulation game inspired by the movies of the same name. Throughout several scenarios, campaigns, and sandbox modes, gamers were allowed to let their imaginations run wild while hoping to prevent their dinosaurs from doing the same.

Overwhelmingly popular with Jurassic Park enthusiasts, in 2021, Frontier Developments followed up Jurassic World Evolution with its sequel, Jurassic World Evolution 2 . The new game introduced new animals, mechanics, and, notably, a new campaign called "Chaos Theory," which explores the movies’ most iconic moments. Still supported by Frontier Developments and continuously evolving through new DLC packs and updates, their games continue to provide new possibilities for players while leaving eager audiences anticipating more as they await the release of Jurassic World 4 in 2025.

What Were Jurassic Park's Mysterious Islands?

  • While Jurassic Park's sister locations never saw fruition, a real-life exhibition, Jurassic Park Institute Tour, entertained audiences in Japan.

How To Play Every Main-Series Sims Game In 2024

The Jurassic Park series seems littered with "what ifs" and "what could’ve beens" as dinosaur enthusiasts rooted for the park to succeed. While Jurassic World would see this concept realized, what few realize is that the original park had global ambitions as a full-fledged franchise. Plans for attractions were in place, future locations were designated, and new technologies promised a new era as Jurassic Park aimed to establish itself as the premier tourist destination. Perhaps one of the biggest tragedies of John Hammond’s infamous project was how much potential was lost in its pursuit. While titles such as Jurassic Park: The Game , Jurassic World Evolution , and the upcoming Jurassic Park: Survival immerse audiences in captivating settings that extend beyond the movies, Jurassic Park: Europe and Jurassic Park: Japan continue to be among the most enigmatic aspects of the franchise.

While many of the Jurassic Park games took players to the Muertes Archipelago mentioned in the movies and novels, they have yet to transport players to the spinoff parks planned by John Hammond. In Michael Crichton’s original book, John Hammond refers to Jurassic Park: Europe and Jurassic Park: Japan, two future development projects but never realized. An obvious nod to Disney’s theme parks and how they expanded globally, there wasn’t much known about them or how InGen planned to build the parks for its Japanese and European locales, making it one of the most mysterious parts of the series.

Although Jurassic Park: Europe made a cameo appearance in the luncheon scene in Jurassic Park , Telltale Games bizarrely provided fans with the most insights into the events unfolding at the overseas parks. As part of the InGen Field Guide released with Jurassic Park: The Game Deluxe Edition set, the breakdown of Jurassic Park’s opening phases mentions "extensive plans in place" with the Portuguese government. Said to be located in the Azores islands, not much else was detailed about Jurassic Park: Europe or its sister location in Japan. However, with Telltale Games’ storytelling called into question by the canon of the Jurassic World movies and Jurassic Park: Survival , there’s no telling just how far John Hammond got in planning to make Jurassic Park an international brand, but it remains a subject of curiosity and speculation.

How Jurassic World Evolution Can Explore Jurassic Park: Europe And Japan

  • A canceled game, also entitled Jurassic Park: Survival, was set to explore a secret third island beyond Isla Nublar and Site B.

The Surprisingly Dark Lore Of Pokémon X And Y

While Jurassic World Evolution 2’s story mode doesn’t come with any profound insight or further understanding of the series, it does allow players to explore it from a different vantage point. More of a flight of fancy and an exercise in creativity, Frontier Developments’ games have made great use of Jurassic Park’s lore and unresolved plot threads to create scenarios for players to navigate. While the game features unique set pieces, dinosaur species, and storylines from all six Jurassic Park films and beyond, how many times can players return to Site B or Isla Nublar to revisit the events of those movies? There’s an opportunity to bring to life one of Jurassic Park’s biggest mysteries, and release one of Jurassic World Evolution 2’s most wanted DLC features. In addition, armchair park builders could grab the Triceratops by the horns to confront the challenges Jurassic Park: Europe and Jurassic Park: Japan would inevitably encounter.

Seemingly inspired by the DLC "Return to Jurassic Park," in the first game, Jurassic World Evolution 2 introduced "Chaos Theory," a series of campaigns meant to explore different film narratives if they went differently. Players attempt to make Jurassic Park successful, finally realize the creation of Jurassic Park: San Diego, and oversee Biosyn’s facilities from Jurassic World Dominion , among other challenges. For fans of the series and simulation games in general, the single-player narratives felt unique and fun and, in some cases, gave more closure to abandoned plot points than the movies did.

While a majority of the lore behind Jurassic Park: Japan and Jurassic Park: Europe seem thin enough to fit on the back of a postcard from a Jurassic World gift shop, it would make the perfect sequel to past "Chaos Theory" scenarios, allowing to see how John Hammond’s dream would’ve played out on a global stage. With challenges surrounding the need to design a park in line with different cultures, audiences, and climates, the whole "What if…?" aspect of "Chaos Theory" feels like the ideal stage for the untold story of Hammond’s unbuilt theme parks to play out with fans of the series at the helm.

Just as "Return to Jurassic Park" provided the content fans always wanted to see in the form of the aviary and new skins to reflect the classic setting, Jurassic Park: Europe and Jurassic Park: Asia could deliver something similar for the dinosaur-themed video game . Far removed from the Costa Rican islands and the esthetics of Isla Nublar, the European and Japanese setting would call for new building skins and decorations to reflect the surrounding areas.

Additionally, having mainly originated from the novels, players would appreciate new features inspired by them, such as the Pteratops Lodge for aviaries, the much-desired river safari, or even an apiary attraction that allows parks to display giant prehistoric insects similar to the dragonflies encountered by the protagonists. As it stands, there are a lot of ideas that neither Frontier Developments nor the Jurassic World franchise are doing anything with, and with a healthy dose of nostalgia, this could be the way to implement them.

Why Jurassic World Evolution 2 Needs To Keep Evolving

  • Other Jurassic Park sim titles include Jurassic Park III: Park Builder , Jurassic Park Builder , and Jurassic World: The Game .

Every Telltale's The Walking Dead Game, In Order

Jurassic World Evolution 2 and its DLC have come a long way, offering a plethora of new features while delivering one of the definitive dinosaur gaming experiences of all time. However, as the series progresses with titles like Jurassic World: Chaos Theory , Jurassic Park: Survival , and Jurassic World 4 , the Jurassic World Evolution series must continue to evolve. Updates, DLC, and maybe even a sequel for next-gen consoles all provide a path forward for Frontier Developments to take flight, taking their series to exciting new heights alongside the franchise that inspired them.

Despite Jurassic World Dominion billing itself as "the epic conclusion to the Jurassic era," it's evident that there are more stories to tell, ideas to explore, and a growing fan desire to engage with their favorite films, especially as modern consoles, TV, and movies continue to adapt nostalgic franchises. Gaming is a versatile medium that allows people to immerse themselves in iconic movie franchises like Terminator , Alien , and Indiana Jones while also expanding upon them in novel ways. While Jurassic World Evolution offers enticing avenues to delve deeper into John Hammond’s dream, its primary aim must be to continue answering the most profound question of them all: "What if…?"

TOP-11 Moscow Parks to Visit

I have chosen the best 11 Moscow parks to visit and spend a beautiful time for you. Do not miss and choose one that you like the most – cycling, festivals, flowers, panoramic views and many other things are waiting for you!

Gorky Park (The Central Park of Culture and Leisure) – The main one of the Moscow Parks

In my opinion this park could be called the main park of the city. Why? Because of its huge territory, the central location and the amount of people visiting the park daily.  It was founded in 1928 and in 2011 it was totally reconstructed. Now it pleases visitors with modern objects and soft green lawns.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 9

The Gorky park is a the right choice for everyone! The youth will like a free WiFi, bicycles, skateboards and other rentals; the couples will enjoy spending time near the river, watching a sunset; parents will appreciate colorful playgrounds and a room for mother and child. Everyone can find something for themselves: from yoga classes  to watching movies in a cozy summer cinema, from dance classes to volleyball playground. Gorky Park is also the venue for all kinds of exhibitions, festivals, events for children and adults. During the winter there is one of the biggest skating rinks in the park.

Museon Art Park – A Second Gorky they say

“Museon” is located on the opposite side of Krimsky Val street. And right now some people believe that Gorky and Museon together is a one space sharing the same beauty.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 2

The Park of Arts was named this way because there is the largest composition of open-air sculptures in Russia. In its territory there are already more than 1000 unique exhibits: from monuments of the socialist realism era to various kinds of contemporary art. But this is not all the attractions of the park. In recent years, “Museon” has become an important cultural site of the city. The park regularly hold many different concerts, festivals, educational projects in the field of art and design. There is a Central House of the Artist, a comfortable summer cinema and other attractions on territory. Be sure to stroll pedestrian Crimean embankment, which looks like a modern park.

Neskuchny Garden – True Russian Nature is Here

Neskuchny garden is located on the right bank of the Moscow River. Today it is also seen as a part of the Gorky Park. This landscape park is one of the oldest in the city and is protected by the state. Its name was received from the Neskuchnoye Estate of  Prince Trubetskoi which is still located in the park.

  • Leninsky Prospekt metro station, Leninsky Prospect, 30

This park is famous mostly for its location close to the Gorky park. It is a quite place with true nature, lots of trees and squirrels and also ancient architecture. As in every park, there are sports and playgrounds, cafes and even a football field.

Zaryadye Park – 5 Steps Away From The Red Square

The area of this brand new park was opened only in September 2017 and located in the very heart of Moscow – right near the Red Square.

  • Open from 10AM to 10PM
  • Teatralnaya, Okhotnyi ryad, Ploschad Revolutsii

The park has 4 zones, each of them represent different parts of Russian landscapes. Above the river there is a floating bridge from where you get to see one of the best panoramic views on Moscow. Other attractions of the park are 5D cinema where you can take a flight above Moscow, few cafes and restaurants, pretty lakes with fishes and old preserved churches. In addition there is still being built a  philharmonic hall, covered with a huge dome and an Ice cage where the temperature will always stay below zero degrees.

When you are on the Red Square do not miss it!

All-Russia Exhibition Center (VDNKh) – The Soviet Style Moscow Park

Park VDNKh – one of the most famous parks in Moscow. This park is one of the sights of the city as it hasn’t changed much since the Soviet era.

  • VDNKh metro station, Prospect Mira, 119

The symbol of VDNKh is a fountain with 16 women symbolizing the friendship of the nations of the USSR. Around this fountain there are all the pavilions representing 16 republics. Now inside the pavilions you find various shops, cafes and exhibitions. If you go deep inside the park you will find a rocket Vostok and and an aircraft. What is funny the inside of the aircraft there is actually a photo exhibition. Near the northern entrance you there is a famous sculpture “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman”. It is extremely famous among Russians as all the movies by Mosfilm corporation used to start with the picture of this statue. But if you go further inside the park you will reach a very calm area. A lake is there, forest and birds singing. Since the park occupies a large area I suggest you to rent a bicycle.

Sokolniki Park – A Place For A Hunt Or For Leisure?

The park got its name because of the royal falconry, which took place there in the past when there was a dense forest. (Sokol means a falcon.) In 2011 it was significantly transformed: updated lawns, landscaped ponds and picnic areas, restored summer cinema and theater, a large rose garden, sports grounds, bicycle paths and other things.

  • Sokolniki metro station, Sokolnichesky Val, 1, p. 1

From the main entrance along the alley you can walk to the Sokolniki circle, where 8 alleys form 9 sectors, in each of them you will find trees of the same breed.  The park is famous for its rosary, as well as flower decoration. On the territory of the park there are concert halls, a library, amusement zone, dances zone and many many other attractions. In winter the park has a skating rink (a free of charge one) and ski runs. During the warm season you can rent a bicycle.

Tsaritsino Park – A Different World Inside Moscow

Here you can walk for hours, admiring the most beautiful nature and magnificent architecture.

  • Open from 6AM to 12AM
  • Tsaritsyno metro station, Dolsky, 1

The most amazing part of the park is the lake with a light and musical fountain. Every evening the fountain starts the show. Lights and music combined make you feel like you are not in Moscow but in a fairy tale. The park is also well equipped for sports lovers and healthy lifestyle. There are volleyball and basketball courts, a tennis court, sports facilities for acrobatics, bodybuilding equipment.

What I personally like about this park is the atmosphere. This place is actually far from the city center but I love going there anyway. Whenever I go there I feel like I left Moscow with all its hectic lifestyle. It is the place where I relax, enjoy myself or a company of my friends and feel kind of different. By the way totally suggested for a date!

Kolomenskoye Park – Combination Of Reserve and Architecture

The Kolomenskoye park is actually a Museum-Reserve. It is a former residence of Russian tsars and one of the most scenic places in Moscow.

  • May to September – open from 8AM to 12AM, October to April – from 8AM to 9PM
  • Kolomenskoye metro station, Andropov Ave, 39

Alike with Tsaritsino park Kolomenskoye park has its own special atmosphere with all the architecture, trees, ponds and even a river bank. The park regularly hosts various folk festivals and different fairs. In summer time you can play with kites or rent a bicycle and ride around the huge area of the park.

I love the view that you get on the city from one of the hills near the river. I love the apple trees alleys and the beautiful churches. It is also a bit far from the city center but yet worth going there. One of my best friends even celebrated her wedding there.

Aptekarsky Garden or Botanical garden of the Moscow State University – The Best Botanical Garden in The World

Aptekar in Russian language means a pharmacist so basically it is a pharmacist’s garden. It was founded in 1706 by Peter The Great for growing medicinal plants for the royal family. But later they moved it from under the walls of the Kremlin to the current location.

  • Open from 10AM to 8PM
  • Prospect Mira metro station, Prospekt Mira, 26

In the botanical garden there are no attractions and noisy crowds of tourists. The area of the garden is not as big as any other park in Moscow. And the entrance is not free. But this exactly what makes this park one of the most comfortable in the city. In the Aptekarsky garden they grow thousands of different plants, flowers and trees. Some of the trees are more than 300 years old. They held different festivals there: flowers festivals, sand and ice sculptures expositions.

For me it is one of the most beautiful parks not only in Moscow but in the world. I have never seen so many different flowers and plants anywhere else. And trust me I am a real park lover. And what is more the staff really takes care about every single tree or plant there, some of the trees have names and stories. I love it there and I think the price is really worth what you get.

Victory Park – A Park That Makes Us Remember The War

The park is located on the Poklonnaya Hill and it has one of the world’s largest memorial complexes dedicated to the World War II. The park was opened for the 50th anniversary of the Victory on May 9, 1995. It is also one of the main venues in the city for holding a variety of mass events.

  • Park Pobedy metro station, Brothers Fonchenko, 7

On the main avenue of the park there are with 1418 fountains – exactly as long as the war lasted. Fountains make five water terraces, symbolizing five years of military operations. And in the center of the park there is the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. If you are interested in the history of the war do not miss it. The Poklonnaya Hill is a part of the park and from the hill you get one of the best views on the city of Moscow. And I could say this is the best place for watching the fireworks during the mass celebrations. But be aware it gets too crowded then. As in most of the other big parks you can rent a bicycle or rollers there.

Izmailovsky Park – A Mix of a Big Forest and Attractions

Izmaylovsky Park occupies a huge green territory, making up a large part of the Izmailovo district. The park consists of two parts: Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest and the forest park of Izmailovo. First part is full of attractions and restaurants while the second one is like a real forest with pine trees, birch groves, beautiful clearings and ponds.

  • Izmaylovskaya, Shosse Entuziastov or Partizanskaya metro stations, Izmaylovsky Park

It is easy to spend there a whole day. A large landscaped area and a lot of various entertainments for children and adults will help you not to get bored. An observation wheel, a boat station, children’s playgrounds, a dance floor, sports grounds, a skate park – all this is only a small part of the possible leisure activities. In the park there are bike paths and a rental services.

I don’t go there often to be honest. But the park is very very close whenever to a souvenir market on Partizanskaya metro station. And whenever the weather is nice and I have enough of free time I stroll through the alleys of the park and enjoy the nature. So if you are going to the souvenir market too and you have enough free time then do go to the park too.

Tsaritsyno: The idyllic palace park where Muscovites escape the big city (PHOTOS)

safari lodge jurassic park

Tsaritsyno Park offers one of the most impressive examples of Russian garden design from the 18 th and 19 th centuries. Located in southern Moscow, it is just a short walk from (you guessed it!) Tsaritsyno metro station .

safari lodge jurassic park

Visitors often crowd around an enormous fountain near the park’s entrance, but you’ll find the palace towers a bit farther away among the trees.

safari lodge jurassic park

The estate originally belonged to Dimitrie Cantemir, a Moldavian prince allied with Imperial Russia. He built a church and a wooden palace on the site .

safari lodge jurassic park

His French-style garden was designed according to the baroque architectural styles of that time and included pathways and flowerbeds that were made according to strict geometrical rules .

safari lodge jurassic park

Catherine the Great fell in love with the estate so much that she decided to buy it. At the time, English-style gardens that artistically imitated natural landscapes were popular, and so two gardeners named John Munro and Francis Reid were brought over from England to work on the estate .

There’s nothing better than wandering through the forest along the winding cobblestone pathways, which are lined with antique statues and pavilions with huge pillars. As you walk, you hear the melodic singing of birds, which heightens the whole experience and takes you away from the chaos of the city center .

Monument to the architects Vasilii Bazhenov and Matvei Kazakov

Monument to the architects Vasilii Bazhenov and Matvei Kazakov

Tsaritsyno’s construction began in 1779 under the supervision of architect Vasili Bazhenov. Unfortunately, just as construction work was almost complete, Catherine visited the palace and expressed dissatisfaction with its design. In 1785, she ordered the palace to be demolished and rebuilt. This time, she tasked Matvey Kazakov, one of Bazhenov’s students, with overseeing the project .

Main palace

Kazakov designed a three-story building that he hoped would capture the glory of Catherine’s reign. However, when work was suspended for three years due to a lack of funds, the empress ordered him to alter the plans, advising him to construct a two-story building and simplify the design of the roof .

safari lodge jurassic park

Following Catherine’s death in 1796, work on the project came to a standstill once again, and the unfinished palace was left in ruins throughout the 19 th century. Local residents ransacked the place, removing window frames as well as stone walls .

Between 1950 and 1980, the ruins of the Grand Palace even became an unexpected rock-climbing site .

This finally changed between 2006 and 2007, when the city undertook a huge construction project to restore the park and architectural complex, bringing it back to its original beauty and splendor .

The main building still contains ornate reception rooms, but the annexes have been turned into a museum.

You might even stumble upon a ballroom scene in the middle of the forest, like something straight out of a movie, except with older people gathering to dance to electro or disco music .

safari lodge jurassic park

These vast green spaces serve as a haven for Muscovites looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and find respite in a tranquil, serene setting. A lot of people come here just to lounge on the grass, play badminton or take a peaceful stroll in the shade .

If you wander around the forest, you might even come across a strange sight under the treetops: a sacred site maintained by local followers of Shamanism. Here you’ll find totem poles decorated with ribbons, symbols and all sorts of offerings, such as pieces of bread, semolina or candy (which you can see being stolen from right under our noses by a squirrel in the picture above).
